We investigate the probability distribution of the return intervals $τ$ between successive 1-min volatilities of two Chinese indices exceeding a certain threshold $q$. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests show that the two indices exhibit multiscaling behavior in the distribution of $τ$, which follows a stretched exponential form $f_q(τ/< τ>)\sim e^{- a(τ/ < τ>)^γ}$ with different correlation exponent $γ$ for different threshold $q$, where $<τ>$ is the mean return interval corresponding to a certain value of $q$. An extended self-similarity analysis of the moments provides further evidence of multiscaling in the return intervals.
We study the volatility time series of 1137 most traded stocks in the US stock markets for the two-year period 2001-02 and analyze their return intervals $τ$, which are time intervals between volatilities above a given threshold $q$. We explore the probability density function of $τ$, $P_q(τ)$, assuming a stretched exponential function, $P_q(τ) \sim e^{-τ^γ}$. We find that the exponent $γ$ depends on the threshold in the range between $q=1$ and 6 standard deviations of the volatility. This finding supports the multiscaling nature of the return interval distribution. To better understand the mu…
The distribution of the return intervals $τ$ between volatilities above a threshold $q$ for financial records has been approximated by a scaling behavior. To explore how accurate is the scaling and therefore understand the underlined non-linear mechanism, we investigate intraday datasets of 500 stocks which consist of the Standard & Poor's 500 index. We show that the cumulative distribution of return intervals has systematic deviations from scaling. We support this finding by studying the m-th moment $μ_m \equiv <(τ/<τ>)^m>^{1/m}$, which show a certain trend with the mean interval $<τ>$. We ge…
Pricing derivatives goes back to the acclaimed Black and Scholes model. However, such a modeling approach is known not to be able to reproduce some of the financial stylized facts, including the dynamics of volatility. In the mathematical finance community, it has therefore emerged a new paradigm, named rough volatility modeling, that represents the volatility dynamics of financial assets as a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst exponent very small, which indeed produces rough paths. At the same time, prices' time series have been shown to be multiscaling, characterized by different Hurst sc…
We propose a simple stochastic volatility model which is analytically tractable, very easy to simulate and which captures some relevant stylized facts of financial assets, including scaling properties. In particular, the model displays a crossover in the log-return distribution from power-law tails (small time) to a Gaussian behavior (large time), slow decay in the volatility autocorrelation and multiscaling of moments. Despite its few parameters, the model is able to fit several key features of the time series of financial indexes, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average, with a remarkable a…
We investigate the probability distribution of the volatility return intervals $τ$ for the Chinese stock market. We rescale both the probability distribution $P_{q}(τ)$ and the volatility return intervals $τ$ as $P_{q}(τ)=1/\barτ f(τ/\barτ)$ to obtain a uniform scaling curve for different threshold value $q$. The scaling curve can be well fitted by the stretched exponential function $f(x) \sim e^{-αx^γ}$, which suggests memory exists in $τ$. To demonstrate the memory effect, we investigate the conditional probability distribution $P_{q} (τ|τ_{0})$, the mean conditional interval $<τ|τ_{0}>$ and…
Bid-ask spread is taken as an important measure of the financial market liquidity. In this article, we study the dynamics of the spread return and the spread volatility of four liquid stocks in the Chinese stock market, including the memory effect and the multifractal nature. By investigating the autocorrelation function and the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA), we find that the spread return is lack of long-range memory, while the spread volatility is long-range time correlated. Moreover, by applying the Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (MF-DFA), the spread return is observed t…
We investigate the large-volatility dynamics in financial markets, based on the minute-to-minute and daily data of the Chinese Indices and German DAX. The dynamic relaxation both before and after large volatilities is characterized by a power law, and the exponents $p_\pm$ usually vary with the strength of the large volatilities. The large-volatility dynamics is time-reversal symmetric at the time scale in minutes, while asymmetric at the daily time scale. Careful analysis reveals that the time-reversal asymmetry is mainly induced by exogenous events. It is also the exogenous events which driv…
Based on 1-minute price changes recorded since year 2012, the fluctuation properties of the rapidly-emerging Bitcoin (BTC) market are assessed over chosen sub-periods, in terms of return distributions, volatility autocorrelation, Hurst exponents and multiscaling effects. The findings are compared to the stylized facts of mature world markets. While early trading was affected by system-specific irregularities, it is found that over the months preceding Apr 2018 all these statistical indicators approach the features hallmarking maturity. This can be taken as an indication that the Bitcoin market…
The statistical properties of the return intervals $τ_q$ between successive 1-min volatilities of 30 liquid Chinese stocks exceeding a certain threshold $q$ are carefully studied. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test shows that 12 stocks exhibit scaling behaviors in the distributions of $τ_q$ for different thresholds $q$. Furthermore, the KS test and weighted KS test shows that the scaled return interval distributions of 6 stocks (out of the 12 stocks) can be nicely fitted by a stretched exponential function $f(τ/\barτ)\sim e^{- α(τ/\barτ)^γ}$ with $γ\approx0.31$ under the significance level of 5%…
Being able to forcast extreme volatility is a central issue in financial risk management. We present a large volatility predicting method based on the distribution of recurrence intervals between volatilities exceeding a certain threshold $Q$ for a fixed expected recurrence time $τ_Q$. We find that the recurrence intervals are well approximated by the $q$-exponential distribution for all stocks and all $τ_Q$ values. Thus a analytical formula for determining the hazard probability $W(Δt |t)$ that a volatility above $Q$ will occur within a short interval $Δt$ if the last volatility exceeding $Q$…
The Mike-Farmer (MF) model was constructed empirically based on the continuous double auction mechanism in an order-driven market, which can successfully reproduce the cubic law of returns and the diffusive behavior of stock prices at the transaction level. However, the volatility (defined by absolute return) in the MF model does not show sound long memory. We propose a modified version of the MF model by including a new ingredient, that is, long memory in the aggressiveness (quantified by the relative prices) of incoming orders, which is an important stylized fact identified by analyzing the …
With the daily and minutely data of the German DAX and Chinese indices, we investigate how the return-volatility correlation originates in financial dynamics. Based on a retarded volatility model, we may eliminate or generate the return-volatility correlation of the time series, while other characteristics, such as the probability distribution of returns and long-range time-correlation of volatilities etc., remain essentially unchanged. This suggests that the leverage effect or anti-leverage effect in financial markets arises from a kind of feedback return-volatility interactions, rather than …
The paper examines the Chinese market reaction to the ADR issue by comparing returns and their stochastic variances of the Chinese firms cross-listed in the U.S. stock market. First, It was implemented capital asset pricing model (CAPM) to determine expected returns A and N shares. The CAPM provided with a methodology to quantify risk and translate that risk into estimates of expected return on equity. Overall findings document that N shares of Chinese entities listed on U.S. market were greatly affected by economic turmoil during the period of World Financial Crises 2007-2008 than the A share…
By adopting Multifractal detrended fluctuation (MF-DFA) analysis methods, the multifractal nature is revealed in the high-frequency data of two typical indexes, the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite 180 Index (SH180) and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index (SZCI). The characteristics of the corresponding multifractal spectra are defined as a measurement of market volatility. It is found that there is a statistically significant relationship between the stock index returns and the spectral characteristics, which can be applied to forecast the future market return. The in-sample and out-…
We present and discuss a stochastic model of financial assets dynamics based on the idea of an inverse renormalization group strategy. With this strategy we construct the multivariate distributions of elementary returns based on the scaling with time of the probability density of their aggregates. In its simplest version the model is the product of an endogenous auto-regressive component and a random rescaling factor designed to embody also exogenous influences. Mathematical properties like increments' stationarity and ergodicity can be proven. Thanks to the relatively low number of parameters…
This paper focuses on the horse race of weekly idiosyncratic momentum (IMOM) with respect to various idiosyncratic risk metrics. Using the A-share individual stocks in the Chinese market from January 1997 to December 2017, we first evaluate the performance of the weekly momentum based on raw returns and idiosyncratic returns, respectively. After that the univariate portfolio analysis is conducted to investigate the return predictability with respect to various idiosyncratic risk metrics. Further, we perform a comparative study on the performance of the IMOM portfolios with respect to various r…
