Non-standard physics which can be described by effective four fermion interactions may be an additional source of CP violation in the neutrino propagation. We discuss the detectability of such a CP violation at a neutrino factory. We assume the current baseline setup of the international design study of a neutrino factory (IDS-NF) for the simulation. We find that the CP violation from certain non-standard interactions is, in principle, detectable significantly below their current bounds -- even if there is no CP violation in the standard oscillation framework. Therefore, a new physics effect might be mis-interpreted as the canonical Dirac CP violation, and a possibly even more exciting effect might be missed.
A framework for testing leptonic unitarity by neutrino oscillation experiments
We search for scalar and tensor non-standard interactions using (anti)-electron neutrino disappearance in oscillation data. We found a slight preference for non-zero CP violation, coming from both tensor and scalar interactions. The preference for CP violation is lead by Daya Bay low-energy data with a significance that reaches $\sim1.7σ$ in the global analysis (and $\sim2.1σ$ when considering only medium baseline reactors data) compared to the standard neutrino oscillation scenario.
This work gives a general overview of phenomenology developed for neutral-meson searches for CPT violation in the framework of the Standard-Model Extension with focus on meson factories. It gives a comparison of notations and fundamental approach in the formalism used by the different experiments. Asymmetries and possible experimental investigations are presented for tests of the momentum-dependent phenomenological parameter of CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations. The general results apply to any mesons produced as correlated meson pairs and addresses the issue of decoherence as a cons…
A more complete theoretical model of testing Lorentz violation by the comparison of atomic clocks is developed in the Robertson-Mansouri-Sexl kinematic framework. As this frame postulates the deviation of the coordinate transformation from the Lorentz transformation, from the viewpoint of the transformation violations on time and space, the LI violating effect in the atomic clock comparison can be explained as two parts: time-delay effect $α\frac {v^2}{c^2}$ and structure effect $-\frac {β+2δ}{3} \frac {v^2}{c^2}$. Standard model extension is a widely used dynamic frame to characterize the Lor…
We explore the possibility to geometrize the interaction of massive fermions with the quantum structure of space-time, trying to create a theoretical background, in order to explain what some recent experimental results seem to implicate on the propagation of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). We will investigate part of the phenomenological implications of this approach on the predicted effect of the UHECR suppression, in fact recent evidences seem to involve the modification of the GZK cut-off phenomenon. The search for an effective theory, which can explain this physical effect, is base…
By analyzing the analogies between the effective system of $N$ spins described by the Ising Hamiltonian and the phenomenon of the self--gravity in mixed particle systems, we show that cooled ions held in a segmented ion trap and exposed to a magnetic field gradient can simulate the proposed mechanism of mutual interaction in mixed neutrino system. We show that with trapped ions one can reproduce the expected corrections to the flavor transitions and the $CPT$ violation induced by gravity on flavor fields, which may have played an important role in the early stages of the universe. The results …
In this work we introduce CPT-odd non-minimal Lorentz-symmetry violating couplings to the electroweak sector modifying the interaction between leptons and gauge bosons. The vertex rules allow us to calculate tree-level processes modified by the presence of the novel dimension-five operators. For definitiveness, we investigate the $W$ decay into a lepton-neutrino pair, the $Z$ decay into pairs of charged and neutral leptons, as well as the decay of the muon. By comparing the experimental measurements on these processes to our results we are able to bound several combinations of the background 4…
CP violation offers a powerful probe for testing the Standard Model. In this endeavour, non-leptonic decays of B mesons play a key role. I will discuss benchmark decays and puzzling patterns emerging from theoretical analyses of the current data.
Testing the Zee-Babu model via neutrino data, lepton flavour violation and direct searches at the LHC
Lorentz invariance violation in the extragalactic propagation of ultra-high energy photons and in the development of showers in the Earth crust and atmosphere
We present new results for classical-particle propagation subject to Lorentz violation. Our analysis is dedicated to spin-nondegenerate operators of arbitrary mass dimension provided by the fermion sector of the Standard-Model Extension. In particular, classical Lagrangians are obtained for the operators $\hat{b}_μ$ and $\hat{H}_{μν}$ as perturbative expansions in Lorentz violation. The functional dependence of the higher-order contributions in the background fields is found to be quite peculiar, which is probably attributed to particle spin playing an essential role for these cases. This pape…
