We investigate numerically the local density of states (LDOS) in the vicinity of a vortex core in a ferromagnetic superconductor. Specifically, we investigate how the LDOS is affected by the relative weight of the spin bands in terms of the superconducting pairing, and we also examine the effect of different pairing symmetries for the superconducting order parameter. Our findings are directly related to scanning tunneling microscopy measurements and may thus be highly useful to clarify details of the superconducting pairing in recently discovered ferromagnetic superconductors.
Theory of scanning tunneling spectroscopy of low energy quasiparticle (QP) states in vortex lattices of d-wave superconductors is developed taking account of the effects caused by an extremely large extension of QP wavefunctions in the nodal directions and the band structure in the QP spectrum. The oscillatory structures in STM spectra, which correspond to van Hove singularities are analysed. Theoretical calculations carried out for finite temperatures and scattering rates are compared with recent experimental data for high temperature cuprates.
We report on low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies of the electronic structure of vortex cores in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (BSCCO). At the vortex core center, an enhanced density-of-states (DOS) is observed at energies near 7 meV. Spectroscopic imaging at these energies reveals an exponential decay of these 'core states' with a decay length of 2.2(3) nm. The four-fold symmetry sometimes predicted for d-wave vortices is not seen in spectroscopic vortex images. A locally nodeless order parameter induced by the magnetic field may be consistent with these measurements.
In a sandwich consisting of two superconducting films, one weakly pinning and one strongly pinning, the vortex positions in both films are determined by the strongly pinning material and the vortex lattice is disordered in both films. We used (strongly pinning) NbN and (weakly pinning) MoGe and studied, by directly imaging the vortex core positions with a scanning tunnelling microscope, how this disorder is restored with increasing thickness of MoGe layer or when the interface is made insulating. For clean interfaces we find that the first reordering of the vortex lattice is found at a layer t…
We study the spatial distribution of the density of states (DOS) at zero bias N(r) in the mixed state of single and multigap superconductors. We provide an analytic expression for N(r) based on deGennes' relation between DOS and the order parameter that reproduces well Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) data in several superconducting materials. In the single gap superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd, we find that N(r) is governed by a length scale $ξ_H=\sqrt{ϕ_0/2πH}$, which decreases in rising fields. The vortex core size $\cal C$, defined via the slope of the order parameter at the vortex center, $\…
An isolated single vortex is considered within the framework of the quasiclassical theory. The local density of states around a vortex is calculated in a clean type II superconductor with an anisotropy. The anisotropy of a superconducting energy gap is crucial for bound states around a vortex. A characteristic structure of the local density of states, observed in the layered hexagonal superconductor 2H-NbSe2 by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is well reproduced if one assumes an anisotropic s-wave gap in the hexagonal plane. The local density of states (or the bound states) around the vor…
We present the results of a study of vortex arrangements in the peak-effect regime of 2H-NbSe_2 by scanning tunneling microscopy. By slowly increasing the temperature in a constant magnetic field, we observed a sharp transition from collective vortex motion to positional fluctuations of individual vortices at the temperature which coincides with the onset of the peak effect in ac-susceptibility. We conclude that the peak effect is a disorder driven transition, with the pinning energy winning from the elastic energy.
We introduce a mode of operation for studying the vortex phase in superconductors using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). While in the conventional STM method, the tip is scanned over a sample in which a fixed vortex pattern is prepared, in our "Lazy Fisherman" method the STM tip is kept fixed at a selected location while the vortices are being moved by varying the applied magnetic field. By continuously acquiring the local tunnelling conductance spectra, dI/dV(V), we detect the changes in the local density of states under the tip due to the vortex motion. With no need for scanning, the me…
We investigate the vortex lattice and vortex bound states in CsFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) under various magnetic fields. A possible structural transition or crossover of vortex lattice is observed with the increase of magnetic field, i.e., the vortex lattice changes from a distorted hexagonal lattice to a distorted tetragonal one at the magnetic field near 0.5 T. It is found that a mixture of stripelike hexagonal and square vortex lattices emerges in the crossover region. The vortex bound state is also observed in the vortex center. The…
It is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that the low energy density of states $N(E)$ is described by a singular V-shape form $N(E)=N_0(H)+α|E|+O(E^2)$ for all clean superconductors in a vortex state, irrespective of the underlying gap structure. The linear term $α|E|$ which has been not recognized so far is obtained by exactly evaluating the vortex contribution. Based on microscopic Eilenberger theory $N(E)$ is evaluated for isotropic gap, line and point node gaps to yield a V-shape $N(E)$. STS-STM experiments on NbSe$_2$ and YNi$_2$B$_2$C give direct evidence for this. We provide …
In the first three years since the discovery of Fe-based high Tc superconductors, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy have shed light on three important questions. First, STM has demonstrated the complexity of the pairing symmetry in Fe-based materials. Phase-sensitive quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging and low temperature spectroscopy have shown that the pairing order parameter varies from nodal to nodeless s\pm within a single family, FeTe1-xSex. Second, STM has imaged C4 -> C2 symmetry breaking in the electronic states of both parent and superconducting materials. As …
We argue that odd-frequency triplet superconductivity can be conveniently realized in hybrid superconductor-ferromagnet (SF) structures with a ferromagnetic vortex. We demonstrate that due to proximity-induced long-range triplet pairing such SFS junctions can sustain appreciable supercurrent which can be directly measured in experiments.
Superconducting vortex cores have been extensively studied for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the surface by mapping the density of states (DOS) through Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). Vortex core shapes are often linked to the superconducting gap anisotropy---quasiparticle states inside vortex cores extend along directions where the superconducting gap is smallest. The superconductor 2H-NbSe$_2$ crystallizes in a hexagonal structure and vortices give DOS maps with a sixfold star shape for magnetic fields perpendicular to the surface and the hexagonal plane. This has been associ…
We propose a microscopic state for the vortex phase of BSCO superconductors. Around the vortex core or above H_{c2}, the d wave hole pairs form a checkerboard localized in the commensurate antiferromagnetic background. We discuss this theory in connection with recent STM experiments.
I apply the recently developed formalism of generalized quasiclassical theory to show that using hybrid superconducting systems with non-collinear strong ferromagnets one can realize the Josephson junction between Berezinskii-type superconductors. The reported calculation reproduces main features observed in the recent experiment, namely the the slightly asymmetric double-slit Fraunhofer interference pattern of the Josephson current through the ferromagnetic vortex. The double-slit structure results from the spatially inhomogeneous Berezinskii state with the amplitude controlled by the local a…
We have developed the quasi-classical formalism for a self-induced vortex state in ferromagnetic superconductors. By combining the spatially averaged approximation of the superconductivity with the phenomenological form of the ferromagnetism, we demonstrate the thermodynamic properties of the p-wave triplet equal-spin-pairing state with the spontaneous vortex lattice. The occurrence condition for the self-induced vortex state is discussed within this formalism. The comparison of the calculated quantities with the observed ones indicates that the self-induced vortex state indeed occurs in UCoGe…
We study the single-vortex solution of the t-J model within resonating-valence-bond (RVB) mean-field theory. We find two types of vortex cores, insulating and metallic, depending on the parameters of the model. The pairing order parameter near both cores have $d_{x^2 -y^2}+iηd_{xy}$ symmetry. For some range of $t/J$ the calculated tunneling spectrum of the metallic vortex core agrees qualitatively with the STM tunneling data for BSCCO.
A spontaneous vortex state (SVS) between 30 K and 56 K was observed for the weak-ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8 with ferromagnetic Curie temperature TC = 131 K and superconducting transition temperature Tc = 56 K. The low field (20 G) Superconducting hysteresis loop indicates a narrow Meissner state region within average lower critical field Bc1(T)= Bc1(0)[1 - (T/T0)2], with average Bave c1 (0) = 12 G and T0 = 30 K. Full Meissner shielding signal in very low applied field indicates an ab-plane Bab c1(0) ~ 4 G with an estimated anisotropic parameter g ~ 7 for this layered system. The…
Vortices play a crucial role in determining the properties of superconductors as well as their applications. Therefore, characterization and manipulation of vortices, especially at the single vortex level, is of great importance. Among many techniques to study single vortices, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) stands out as a powerful tool, due to its ability to detect the local electronic states and high spatial resolution. However, local control of superconductivity as well as the manipulation of individual vortices with the STM tip is still lacking. Here we report a new function of the ST…
The atomically clean surface of the iron-based superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45 is investigated by low-temperature STM with different tip apex states. By manipulating a single Fe atom onto the tip apex, signatures of the orbital nature of the subsurface Fe layer of FeTe0.55Se0.45 can be identified. By preparing a charged tip state, the intrinsic spatial inhomogeneity of the chemical potential of FeTe0.55Se0.45 can be revealed. As a result, three different types of vortex bound states originating from locally varying topological properties of the FeTe0.55Se0.45 surface are observed by scanning tun…
Electronic states within superconducting vortices hold crucial information about paring mechanisms and topology. While scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy(STM/S) can image the vortices, it is difficult to isolate the intrinsic electronic states from extrinsic effects like subsurface defects and disorders. We combine STM/S with unsupervised machine learning to develop a method for screening out the vortices pinned by embedded disorder in Fe-based superconductors. The approach provides an unbiased way to reveal intrinsic vortex-core states and may address puzzles on Majorana zero modes.
Atomic-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy is used to study the spectrum of quasiparticle states in superconducting Sr2RuO4. The measured temperature dependence of the quasiparticle spectrum is consistent with a multi-band superconducting order parameter with one band exhibiting a line of nodes, if a constant density of states offset can be ascribed to a surface effect. In magnetic fields $H<H_{c2}$, a vortex lattice, square and oriented parallel to the <110> direction of the RuO2 lattice, is detected by spectroscopic imaging. Each vortex exhibits one flux quantum and a strong zero-bias…
Strong pinning of superconducting flux quanta by a square array of 1 $μ$m-sized ferromagnetic dots in a magnetic-vortex state was visualized by low-temperature magnetic force microscopy (LT-MFM). A direct correlation of the superconducting flux lines with the positions of the dots was derived. The force that the MFM tip exerts on the individual vortex in the depinning process was used to estimate the spatial modulation of the pinning potential. It was found, that the superconducting vortices which are preferably located on top of the Py dots experience about 15 times stronger pinning forces as…
Majorana zero modes (MZMs) have been predicted to exist in the topological insulator (TI)/superconductor (SC) heterostructure. Recent spin polarized scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiment$^{1}$ has observed spin-polarization dependence of the zero bias differential tunneling conductance at the center of vortex core, which may be attributed to the spin selective Andreev reflection, a novel property of the MZMs theoretically predicted in 1-dimensional nanowire$^{2}$. Here we consider a helical electron system described by a Rashba spin orbit coupling Hamiltonian on a spherical surface wi…
We present a local probe study of the magnetic superconductor, ErNi$_2$B$_2$C, using magnetic force microscopy at sub-Kelvin temperatures. ErNi$_2$B$_2$C is an ideal system to explore the effects of concomitant superconductivity and ferromagnetism. At 500 mK, far below the transition to a weakly ferromagnetic state, we directly observe a structured magnetic background on the micrometer scale. We determine spatially resolved absolute values of the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ and study its temperature dependence as the system undergoes magnetic phase transitions from paramagnetic to antiferro…
The interaction between a superconducting vortex in a type II superconducting film (SC) and a ferromagnet (FM) with out-of-plane magnetization is investigated theoretically within the London approximation. The dependence of the interaction energy on the FM-vortex distance, film thickness and different geometries of the magnetic structures: disk, annulus(ring), square and triangle are calculated. Analytic expressions and vectorplots of the current induced in the SC due to the presence of the FM are presented. For a FM disk with a cavity, we show that different local minima for the vortex positi…
We study the proximity effect in a ferromagnetic nanoparticle having a vortex magnetization pattern. We show that for axisymmetric system consisting of a circular particle and a magnetic vortex situated at the center of it no long range superconducting correlations are induced. It means that induced superconductivity is localized in the small area near the superconducting electrode. However, in the real systems axial symmetry can be broken by either a shift of the magnetic vortex from the origin or geometrical anisotropy of the ferromagnetic particle. In this case a long range proximity effect…
We use sub-Kelvin scanning tunneling spectroscopy to investigate the suppression of superconductivity in homogeneously disordered ultrathin MoC films. We observe that the superconducting state remains spatially homogeneous even on the films of 3 nm thickness. The vortex imaging suggests the global phase coherence in our films. Upon decreasing thickness, when the superconducting transition drops from 8.5 to 1.2 K, the superconducting energy gap follows perfectly Tc. All this is pointing to a two-stage fermionic scenario of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) via a metallic state as an…
We demonstrate that there is a long-range vortex-vortex attraction in ferromagnetic superconductors due to polarization of the magnetic moments. Vortex clusters are then stabilized in the ground state for low vortex densities. The motion of vortex clusters driven by the Lorentz force excites magnons. This regime becomes unstable at a threshold velocity above which domain walls are generated for slow relaxation of the magnetic moments and the vortex configuration becomes modulated. This dynamics of vortices and magnetic moments can be probed by transport measurements.
Focusing on a quantum-limit behavior, we study a single vortex in a clean s-wave type-II superconductor by self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The discrete energy levels of the vortex bound states in the quantum limit is discussed. The vortex core radius shrinks monotonically up to an atomic-scale length on lowering the temperature T, and the shrinkage stops to saturate at a lower T. The pair potential, supercurrent, and local density of states around the vortex exhibit Friedel-like oscillations. The local density of states has particle-hole asymmetry induced by the vo…
Using low-temperature Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) we provide direct experimental evidence for spontaneous vortex phase (SVP) formation in EuFe$_2$(As$_{0.79}$P$_{0.21}$)$_2$ single crystal with the superconducting $T^{\rm 0}_{\rm SC}=23.6$~K and ferromagnetic $T_{\rm FM}\sim17.7$~K transition temperatures. Spontaneous vortex-antivortex (V-AV) pairs are imaged in the vicinity of $T_{\rm FM}$. Also, upon cooling cycle near $T_{\rm FM}$ we observe the first-order transition from the short period domain structure, which appears in the Meissner state, into the long period domain structure with …
This paper reports the observation of hysteresis in the vortex pinning in a superconductor / ferromagnetic epitaxial nanocomposite consisting of fcc Gd particles incorporated in a Nb matrix. We show that this hysteretic pinning is associated with magnetic reversal losses in the Gd particles and is fundamentally different in origin to pinning interactions previously observed for ferromagnetic particles or other microstructural features.
We study several aspects of the structure of vortices in conventional s-wave Type $II$ superconductors. It is well-known that there are low energy quasiparticles bound to the core of a vortex. We show that under certain conditions, these quasiparticles form a degenerate Fermi gas with a finite density of states at the Fermi energy. In three dimensional superconductors, the result is a one dimensional Fermi gas of quasiparticles bound to the core of a vortex line. As is usual in one dimensional systems, interactions between the quasiparticles lead to Luttinger liquid behaviour. This may be prob…
The upper critical field for field along the b-axis of the p-wave ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe has a particular S-shape, akin to the re-entrant superconducting phase of URhGe. To explore the evolution of the superconducting phase under this transverse magnetic field, we report the thermal conductivity and resistivity measurements, revealing a possible field-induced vortex liquid phase, and supporting a field-induced change of the superconducting order parameter.
Ising spin-orbital coupling is usually easy to identify in the Ising superconductors via an in-plane critical field enhancement, but we show that the Ising spin-orbital coupling also manifests in the vortex physics for perpendicular magnetic fields. By self-consistently solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations of a model Hamiltonian built on the honeycomb lattice with the Ising spin-orbital coupling pertinent to the transition metal dichalcogenides, we numerically investigate the local breaking of the spin and sublattice degeneracies in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. It is r…
We study the fermionic states of the antiferromagnetically ordered vortex cores predicted to exist in the superconducting phase of the newly proposed SO(5) model of strongly correlated electrons. Our model calculation gives a natural explanation of the recent STM measurements on BSCCO, which in surprising contrast to YBCO revealed completely insulating vortex cores.
In systems combining type-II superconductivity and magnetism the non-stationary magnetic field of moving Abrikosov vortices may excite spin waves, or magnons. This effect leads to the appearance of an additional damping force acting on the vortices. By solving the London and Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations we calculate the magnetic moment induced force acting on vortices in ferromagnetic superconductors and superconductor/ferromagnet superlattices. If the vortices are driven by a dc force, magnon generation due to the Cherenkov resonance starts as the vortex velocity exceeds some threshold v…
Tunneling spectroscopy played a central role in the experimental verification of the microscopic theory of superconductivity in the classical superconductors. Initial attempts to apply the same approach to high-temperature superconductors were hampered by various problems related to the complexity of these materials. The use of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) on these compounds allowed to overcome the main difficulties. This success motivated a rapidly growing scientific community to apply this technique to high-temperature superconductors. This paper reviews the experimen…
We observed slow moving vortex lattices in NbSe_2 using a home built STM at a temperature of 4.2 K and magnetic fields in the range of 250-500 mT. The vortex lattices move coherently at speeds of 1-10 pm/s due to a slow decay of our magnetic field of 0.5 mT/day. We observe collective speed variations which indicate pinning/depinning events. Furthermore, we found -- to our knowledge for the first time -- small and local deviations from the coherent behavior. Most noticeable were local lattice distortions with displacements of the vortices of ~2 nm from their ideal lattice position. We compared …
We use local and global magnetometry measurements to study the influence of magnetic domain width w on the domain-induced vortex pinning in superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers, built of a Nb film and a ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, with an insulating layer to eliminate proximity effect. The quasi-periodic domain patterns with different and systematically adjustable width w, as acquired by a special demagnetization procedure, exert tunable vortex pinning on a superconducting layer. The largest enhancement of vortex pinning, by a factor of more than 10…
A superconducting rod with a magnetic moment on top develops vortices obtained here through 3D calculations of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The inhomogeneity of the applied field brings new properties to the vortex patterns that vary according to the rod thickness. We find that for thin rods (disks) the vortex patterns are similar to those obtained in presence of a homogeneous magnetic field instead because they consist of giant vortex states. For thick rods novel patterns are obtained as vortices are curve lines in space that exit through the lateral surface.
Muon spin rotation spectroscopy has been used to measure the effective size of the vortex cores in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.95 as a function of temperature and magnetic field deep in the superconducting state. While the core size at H=2T is close to 20 angstroms and consistent with that measured by STM at 6T, we find a striking increase in the core size at lower magnetic fields, where it approaches an extraordinarily large value of about 100 angstroms. This suggests that the average value of the superconducting coherence length in cuprate superconductors may be larger than previously thought …
Starting from the London - type model we study the domain structures in ferromagnetic superconductors taking account of the nucleation of vortices and antivortices coupled to the magnetic texture. We predict that the coupling between domains and vortices results in the formation of two energetically favorable domain configurations: (i) a Meissner - type vortex free configuration with strong domain shrinking and (ii) a more rare domain configuration with a dense vortex -- antivortex lattice. The switching between these configurations is shown to result in the first order phase transitions which…
We discuss basics of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) of the superconducting state with normal and superconducting tips. We present a new method to measure the local variations in the Andreev reflection amplitude between a superconducting tip and the sample. This method is termed Scanning Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy (SAS). We also briefly discuss vortex imaging with STM/S under an applied current through the sample, and show the vortex lattice as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and sample's surface.
A hysteretic in-plane magnetoresistance develops below the superconducting transition of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces for $\left|H_{/\!/}\right|<$ 0.15 T, independently of the carrier density or oxygen annealing. We show that this hysteresis arises from vortex depinning within a thin superconducting layer, in which the vortices are created by discrete ferromagnetic dipoles located solely above the layer. We find no evidence for finite-momentum pairing or bulk magnetism and hence conclude that ferromagnetism is strictly confined to the interface, where it competes with superconductivity.
Motivated by a recent experiment in which zero-bias peaks have been observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments performed on chains of magnetic atoms on a superconductor, we show, by generalizing earlier work, that a multichannel ferromagnetic wire deposited on a spin-orbit coupled superconducting substrate can realize a non-trivial chiral topological superconducting state with Majorana bound states localized at the wire ends. The non-trivial topological state occurs for generic parameters requiring no fine tuning, at least for very large exchange spin splitting in the wire. We…
We use a real-space recursion method to calculate the local density of states (LDOS) within a model that contains both d-wave superconducting and antiferromagnetic order. We focus on the LDOS in the superconducting phase near single vortices with either normal or antiferromagnetic cores. Furthermore, we study the low-energy quasiparticle structure when magnetic vortices operate as pinning centers for surrounding unidirectional spin density waves (stripes). We calculate the Fourier transformed LDOS and show how the energy dependence of relevant Fourier components can be used to determine the na…
A number of ferromagnetic superconductors have been recently discovered which are believed to be in the so-called "equal spin pairing" (ESP) state. In the ESP state the Cooper pairs condense forming order parameters $Δ_{\uparrow\uparrow}, Δ_{\downarrow\downarrow}$ which are decoupled in the spin-sector. We show that these three-dimensional systems should generically support topologically protected surface Majorana arcs and bulk Weyl fermions as gapless excitations. Similar protected low-energy exotic quasiparticles should also appear in the recently discovered non-centrosymmteric superconducto…
Two-dimensional Rashba superconductor Si(111)-$\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$-(Tl,Pb) is a candidate platform of mixed spin-singlet and -triplet superconductivity. A recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiment revealed a pseudogap at the vortex core, suggesting the finite triplet component [T. Nakamura $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. B $\bf{ 98}$, 134505 (2018)]. Detailed spectroscopic information of the superconducting gap and the low-energy band structure is necessary to establish the putative triplet superconductivity. Here, we performed high-energy-resolution spectroscopic imaging experim…
We present a quantitative comparison between the measurements of the complex conductance at low (kHz) and high (GHz) frequency in a thin superconducting film of NbN and the theoretical predictions of the dynamical Beresinksii-Kosterlitz-Thouless theory. While the data in the GHz regime can be well reproduced by extending the standard approach to the realistic case of an inhomogeneous sample, the low-frequency measurements present an anomalously large dissipative response around Tc. This anomaly can only be accounted for by assuming a strong slowing down of the vortex diffusion in the kHz regim…
The local density of states (LDOS) at one of the vortex lattice cores in a high Tc superconductor is studied by using a self-consistent mean field theory including interactions for both antiferromagnetism (AF) and d-wave superconductivity (DSC). The parameters are chosen in such a way that in an optimally doped sample the AF order is completely suppressed while DSC prevails. In the mixed state, we show that the local AF-like SDW order appears near the vortex core and acts as an effective local magnetic field on the quasiparticles. As a result, the LDOS at the core exhibits a double-peak struct…
Magnetic-field changes $<$ 0.2 Oe over the scan length in magnetometers that necessitate sample movement are enough to create artifacts in the dc magnetization measurements of the weakly ferromagnetic superconductor RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ (Ru1212) below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c} \approx$ 30 K. The observed features depend on the specific magnetic-field profile in the sample chamber and this explains the variety of reported behaviors for this compound below $T_{c}$. An experimental procedure that combines improvement of the magnetic-field homogeneity with very small…
Site-dependent NMR relaxation time $T_1({\bf r})$ is calculated in the vortex state using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, taking account of possible "field-induced stripe'' states in which the magnetism arises locally around a vortex core in d-wave superconductivity. The recently observed huge enhancement $T_1^{-1}({\bf r})$ below $T_c$ at a core site in Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_6$ is explained. The field-induced stripe picture explains consistently other relevant STM and neutron experiments.
Vortex lattice states occurring in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with the spin-orbit coupling of Rashba type under a magnetic field parallel to the symmetry plane are examined by assuming the $s$-wave pairing case and in an approach combining the quasiclassical theory with the Landau level expansion of the superconducting order parameter. The resulting field-temperature phase diagrams include not only a discontinuous transition but a continuous crossover between different vortex lattice structures, and, further, a critical end point of a structural transition line is found in an intermedi…
Similar to the optimal-doped, weak-ferromagnetic (WFM induced by canted antiferromagnetism, T$_{Curie}$ = 131 K) and superconducting (T$_{c}$ = 56 K) RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$, the underdoped RuSr$_{2}$EuCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$ (T$_{Curie}$ = 133 K, T$_{c}$ = 36 K) also exhibited a spontaneous vortex state (SVS) between 16 K and 36 K. The low field ($\pm$20 G) superconducting hysteresis loop indicates a weak and narrow Meissner state region of average lower critical field B$_{c1}^{ave}$(T) = B$_{c1}^{ave}$(0)[1 - (T/T$_{SVS}$)$^{2}$], with B$_{c1}^{ave}$(0) = 7 G and T$_{SVS}$ = 16 K. The vortex mel…
The coexistence of weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity in ErNi$_{2}$B$% _{2}$C suggests the possibility of a spontaneous vortex phase (SVP) in which vortices appear in the absence of an external field. We report evidence for the long-sought SVP from the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ of high-quality single crystals of ErNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C. In addition to expected features at the Néel temperature $T_{N}$ = 6.0 K and weak ferromagnetic onset at $T_{WFM}=2.3 $K, $Δλ(T)$ rises to a maximum at $T_{m}=0.45$ K before dropping sharply down to $\sim $0.1 K. We assign the 0.45 K-maximum…
The observation of vortices in superconductors was a major breakthrough in developing the conceptual background for superconducting applications. Each vortex carries a flux quantum, and the magnetic field radially decreases from the center. Techniques used to make magnetic field maps, such as magnetic decoration, give vortex lattice images in a variety of systems. However, strong type II superconductors allow penetration of the magnetic field over large distances, of order of the magnetic penetration depth λ. Superconductivity survives up to magnetic fields where, for imaging purposes, there i…
