The resonance production of new chiral spin-1 excited bosons, Z*, and their detection through the Drell-Yan process in the first physical runs at the CERN LHC are considered. The new neutral chiral bosons can be observed as a Breit-Wigner resonance peaks in the invariant dilepton mass distribution in the same way as the well-known hypothetical gauge bosons, Z'. However, unique new signatures of the chiral bosons exist. These signatures could be very important for the interpretation of the first LHC data. First, there is no Jacobian peak in the lepton transverse momentum distribution at the kinematical endpoint of the new resonance. Second, the lepton angular distribution in the Collins-Soper frame for the high on-peak invariant masses of the lepton pairs has a peculiar "swallowtail" shape.
We present a detailed numerical study of lepton-pair production via the Drell-Yan process above the Z-peak at the LHC. Our results consistently combine next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections and next-to-leading order electroweak effects, and include the leading photon-initiated processes using a recent extraction of the photon distribution function. We focus on the effects of electroweak corrections and of photon-photon scattering contributions, and demonstrate which kinematic distributions exhibit sensitivity to these corrections. We show that a combination of measurements allows them …
We suggest the measurement of Drell-Yan (DY) lepton pairs in p-Pb collisions at the LHC (sqrt(s)=5.02 TeV) in order to disentangle the relative contributions of shadowing and coherent energy loss in quarkonium production off nuclei. The nuclear modification of low mass DY production is computed at NLO using various sets of nuclear parton densities. It is then observed that shadowing effects strongly cancel out in the J/psi over DY suppression ratio R_{pA}^{J/psi}(y) / R_{pA}^{DY}(y), unlike the effect of coherent energy loss. Such a measurement could be performed at forward rapidity by the ALI…
We study the potential of future Parity-Violating Electron Scattering (PVES) data to probe the parameter space of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We contrast the constraints derived from Drell-Yan data taken at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with projections of the planned PVES experiments SoLID and P2. We show that the PVES data can complement the bounds set by the LHC data in the dimension-6 operator space since it probes different combinations of operators than Drell-Yan. The lower characteristic energy of P2 and SoLID also helps disentangle effects of dimension-6 and di…
The purpose of this review is to investigate what kind of physics can be extracted at the LHC, assuming a discovery is made in events with missing transverse momentum, as generically expected in supersymmetry (SUSY) with R-parity conservation. To set the scene, we first discuss the collider phenomenology of the six possible electroweakino benchmark scenarios, as they provide valuable insight into what one might be facing at the LHC. We review the existing methods for mass reconstruction from measured kinematic endpoints in the distributions of suitable variables, e.g., the invariant masses of …
We present a systematic study of an extension of the Standard Model (SM) with two Higgs doublets and one complex singlet (2HDM+S). In order to gain analytical understanding of the parameter space, we re-parameterize the 27 parameters in the Lagrangian by quantities more closely related to physical observables: physical masses, mixing angles, trilinear and quadratic couplings, and vacuum expectation values. Embedding the 125\,GeV SM-like Higgs boson observed at the LHC places stringent constraints on the parameter space. In particular, the mixing of the SM-like interaction state with the remain…
We consider $J/ψ$ photoproduction in ion--ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the LHC and RHIC in the coherent and incoherent quasielastic channels with and without accompanying forward neutron emission and analyze the role of nuclear gluon shadowing at small $x$, $x=10^{-4}-10^{-2}$, in these processes. We find that despite the good agreement between large nuclear gluon shadowing and the ALICE data in the coherent channel, in the incoherent channel, the leading twist approximation predicts the amount of nuclear suppression which is by approximately a factor of $1.5$ exceeds that seen in …
We study the LHC phenomenology of flavor changing Yukawa couplings between top quark, Higgs boson, and either an up or charm quark. Such $tuh$ or $tch$ couplings arise for instance in models in which Higgs sector is extended by the existence of additional Higgs bosons or by higher dimensional operators. We emphasize the importance of anomalous single top plus Higgs production in these scenarios, in addition to the more widely studied $t \to h j$ decays. By recasting existing CMS searches in multilepton and diphoton plus lepton final states, we show that bounds on $tuh$ couplings are improved b…
We present a new probe of strongly coupled electroweak symmetry breaking at the 14 TeV LHC by measuring a phase shift in the event distribution as a function of the decay azimuthal angles in massive gauge boson scattering. A large phase shift arises from an interference effect between the strongly interacting longitudinal modes and the transverse modes of the gauge bosons. We find that even very broad resonances of masses up to 900 GeV can be probed at 3$σ$ significance with a 3000 fb$^{-1}$ run of the LHC by using this technique. We also present the estimated reach for a future 50 TeV proton-…
New physics near the TeV scale can generate dimension-six operators that modify the production rate and branching ratios of the Higgs boson. Here, we show how Higgs boson pair production can yield complementary information on dimension-six operators involving the gluon field strength. For example, the invariant mass distribution of the Higgs boson pair can show the extent to which the masses of exotic TeV-scale quarks come from electroweak symmetry breaking. We discuss both the current Tevatron bounds on these operators and the most promising LHC measurement channels for two different Higgs ma…
We analyse some features of WW scattering processes at LHC. The severe cancellations between fusion diagrams and the other contributions evidence the necessity of complete calculations for studying the high WW invariant mass region and disentangling the standard Higgs case from new physics.

Collider searches for energetic particles recoiling against missing transverse energy allow to place strong bounds on the interactions between dark matter (DM) and standard model particles. In this article we update and extend LHC constraints on effective dimension-7 operators involving DM and electroweak gauge bosons. A concise comparison of the sensitivity of the mono-photon, mono-W, mono-Z, mono-W/Z, invisible Higgs-boson decays in the vector boson fusion mode and the mono-jet channel is presented. Depending on the parameter choices, either the mono-photon or the mono-jet data provide the m…
We briefly review flavour violation in the lepton sector: starting from neutrino oscillations and their implications, we consider several charged lepton flavour violating observables at high and low energies. We present new physics models and discuss the rôle of the latter in disentangling them. In particular, we show how the interplay of different observables allows to derive important information on the underlying mechanism of lepton flavour violation. As an example, we discuss the impact of a type-I SUSY seesaw concerning lepton flavour violation at low energies and at colliders (LHC and a …
We investigate the production of heavy coloured scalars and vectors and their relevance at LHC for the study of vector-like quarks ($T$). These coloured states ($C$) are present in a large number of extensions of the standard model, in particular in composite models and in extra dimensional models. Assuming that these bosonic states are heavier than the vector-like quarks (VLQ), we consider their production through the process $p~p\rightarrow C\rightarrow tT$. Large QCD production cross-sections for $C$ enable us to probe heavier masses for the VLQ and thereby allowing to put stronger limits o…
We consider some trends, achievements and a series of remaining problems in the precision determination of parton distribution functions. For the description of the scaling violations of the deep-inelastic scattering data, forming the key ingredients to all PDF fits, a solid theoretical framework is of importance. It is provided by the fixed flavor number scheme in describing the heavy-quark contributions which is found in good agreement with the present experimental data in a very wide range of momentum transfers. In this framework also a consistent determination of the heavy-quark masses is …
There are two kinds of new physics effects on non-resonant di-Higgs process from gluon fusion, non-SM Higgs trilinear self-coupling $λ_{hhh}$ or new colored particles running in the loop. With the aim of disentangling different new physics contributions, we study their characteristics in the kinematic distributions. Assuming that the total cross section is observed to be about three times as large as the SM expectation, we consider the cases of $λ_{hhh}/λ_{hhh}^{\rm SM} =-0.5, 5.5$ as well as a new physics model with heavy vectorlike quarks in a type-II two Higgs double model, called the VLQ-2…
We present a systematic method to factorise singularities using non-linear mappings. As a first application of the method the fully differential NNLO calculation of the partial decay width of a Higgs boson into Bottom-quarks is presented.
The signal for a highly boosted heavy resonance competing against a background of light parton jets at the LHC can be enhanced by analyzing subjets in the "fat" jet that possibly contains the heavy resonance. Three methods for doing this are known as filtering, pruning, and trimming. We study the possibility of combining these methods using a relative likelihood approach. We find that, because the methods are not the same, one achieves an enhanced statistical power by combining them. We illustrate the possibilities first with a simple problem of combining trimming and pruning to enhance the si…
We study quark and gluon jets separately using public collider data from the CMS experiment. Our analysis is based on 2.3/fb of proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV, collected at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. We define two non-overlapping samples via a pseudorapidity cut -- central jets with |eta| < 0.65 and forward jets with |eta| > 0.65 -- and employ jet topic modeling to extract individual distributions for the maximally separable categories. Under certain assumptions, such as sample independence and mutual irreducibility, these categories correspond to "quark" and "gluon" jets, as given …
In this letter we propose a strategy for discerning if new physics in the Wilson coefficient ${\cal C}_{9μ}$ is dominantly lepton flavour universality violating or if it contains a sizable lepton flavour universal component (${\cal C}_9^{\rm U}$). Distinguishing among these two cases, for which the model independent fit of the related scenarios exhibits similar pulls w.r.t. the Standard Model, is crucial to advance our understanding of the $B$ anomalies. We first identify the origin of the degeneracy of these two cases and point out the key observables that can break it. In particular, while t…
Monte Carlo (MC) generators are crucial for analyzing data in particle collider experiments. However, often even a small mismatch between the MC simulations and the measurements can undermine the interpretation of the results. This is particularly important in the context of LHC searches for rare physics processes within and beyond the standard model (SM). One of the ultimate rare processes in the SM currently being explored at the LHC, $pp\to t\bar tt \bar t$ with its large multi-dimensional phase-space is an ideal testing ground to explore new ways to reduce the impact of potential MC mismod…
The performance of the Bayesian unfolding method in extracting the event-by-event (EbyE) distributions of harmonic flow coefficients v_n is investigated using a toy model simulation, as well as simulations based on the HIJING and AMPT models. The unfolding method is shown to recover the input v_2-v_4 distributions for multiplicities similar to those observed in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The effects of the nonflow are evaluated using HIJING simulation with and without a flow afterburner. The probability distribution of v_n resulting only from nonflow in HIJING is nearly a Gaussian and can be…
The effective Lagrangian formalism provides a way to study the new physics effects at the electroweak scale. We study the Higgs pair production via the vector-boson fusion (VBF) at the Large Hadron Collider within the framework of the effective field theory. The effects from the dimension-six operators involved in the VBF Higgs pair production, particularly $\mathcal{O}_{Φ,2}$ and $\mathcal{O}_{Φ,3}$ which are relevant to the triple Higgs self-coupling, on the integrated cross section and various kinematic distributions are investigated. We find that the distributions of Higgs pair invariant m…
We consider the impact of the recent data obtained by the LHC, Tevatron, and fixed-target experiments on the nucleon quark distributions with a particular focus on disentangling different quark species. An improved determination of the poorly known strange sea distribution is obtained due to including data from the neutrino-induced deep-inelastic scattering experiments NOMAD and CHORUS. The impact of the associated (W + c) production data by CMS and ATLAS on the strange sea determination is also studied and a comparison with earlier results based on the collider data is discussed. Finally, the…
Measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in neutral-current Drell-Yan di-lepton production have primarily been used for determinations of the weak mixing angle $θ_W$. We observe that, unlike the case of Run-I of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC Run-I), for the first time at the LHC Run-II the reconstructed forward-backward asymmetry has the capability of placing useful constraints on the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). By examining the statistical and the PDF uncertainties on the reconstructed forward-backward asymmetry, we investigate its potential for disentang…
We introduce jet topics: a framework to identify underlying classes of jets from collider data. Because of a close mathematical relationship between distributions of observables in jets and emergent themes in sets of documents, we can apply recent techniques in "topic modeling" to extract jet topics from data with minimal or no input from simulation or theory. As a proof of concept with parton shower samples, we apply jet topics to determine separate quark and gluon jet distributions for constituent multiplicity. We also determine separate quark and gluon rapidity spectra from a mixed Z-plus-j…
We suggest that the recently observed charmed scalar mesons $D_0^{0}(2308)$ (BELLE) and $D_0^{0,+}(2405)$ (FOCUS) are considered as different resonances. Using the QCD sum rule approach we investigate the possible four-quark structure of these mesons and also of the very narrow $D_{sJ}^{+}(2317)$, firstly observed by BABAR. We use diquak-antidiquark currents and work to the order of $m_s$ in full QCD, without relying on $1/m_c$ expansion. Our results indicate that a four-quark structure is acceptable for the resonances observed by BELLE and BABAR: $D_0^{0}(2308)$ and $D_{sJ}^{+}(2317)$ respect…
Local non-Gaussianity, parametrized by $f_{\rm NL}$, introduces a scale-dependent bias that is strongest at large scales, precisely where General Relativistic (GR) effects also become significant. With future data, it should be possible to constrain $f_{\rm NL} = {\cal O}(1)$ with high redshift surveys. GR corrections to the power spectrum and ambiguities in the gauge used to define bias introduce effects similar to $f_{\rm NL}= {\cal O}(1)$, so it is essential to disentangle these effects. For the first time in studies of primordial non-Gaussianity, we include the consistent GR calculation of…
We discuss implications of first LHC results for models motivated by the hierarchy problem: large extra dimensions and supersymmetry. We present bounds, global fits and implications for naturalness.
We present STAR measurements of the charge-dependent three-particle correlator $γ^{a,b}=\langle \cos(ϕ_1^{a}+ϕ_2^{b}-2ϕ_3)\rangle/v_{2}\{2\}$ and elliptic flow $v_{2}\{2\}$ in U+U, Au+Au and p+Au collisions at RHIC. The difference $Δγ= γ(\rm{opposite\!-\!sign})\!-\!γ(\rm{same\!-\!sign})$ measures charge separation across the reaction plane, a predicted signal of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). Although charge separation has been observed, it has been argued that the measured separation can also be explained by elliptic flow related backgrounds. In order to separate the two effects, we perfor…
