Negative index metamaterials (NIMs) give rise to unusual and intriguing properties and phenomena, which may lead to important applications such as superlens, subwavelength cavity and slow light devices. However, the negative refractive index in metamaterials normally requires a stringent condition of simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability. A new class of negative index metamaterials - chiral NIMs, have been recently proposed. In contrast to the conventional NIMs, chiral NIMs do not require the above condition, thus presenting a very robust route toward negative refraction. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of a chiral metamaterial exhibiting negative refractive index down to n=-5 at terahertz frequencies, with only a single chiral resonance. The strong chirality present in the structure lifts the degeneracy for the two circularly polarized waves and relieves the double negativity requirement. Chiral NIM are predicted to possess intriguing electromagnetic properties that go beyond the traditional NIMs, such as opposite signs of refractive indices for the two circular polarizations and negative reflection. The realization of terahertz chiral NIMs offers new opportunities for investigations of their novel electromagnetic properties, as well as important terahertz device applications.
As the variation of temperature alters the intrinsic carrier density in a semiconductor, numerical simulations indicate that the consequent variation of the relative permittivity in the terahertz regime provides a way to realize thermally tunable split-ring resonators. Electromagnetic metasurfaces and metamaterials that are thermally tunable in the terahertz regime can thus be implemented.
We theoretically consider infrared-driven hyperbolic metamaterials able to spatially filtering terahertz radiation. The metamaterial is a slab made of alternating semiconductor and dielectric layers whose homogenized uniaxial response, at terahertz frequencies, shows principal permittivities of different signs. The gap provided by metamaterial hyperbolic dispersion allows the slab to stop spatial frequencies within a bandwidth tunable by changing the infrared radiation intensity. We numerically prove the device functionality by resorting to full wave simulation coupled to the dynamics of charg…
We investigate the nonlinear effect of a planar superconducting metamaterial made from niobium nitride (NbN) at terahertz frequencies. As the variation of the incident intense terahertz field alters the intrinsic conductivity in the NbN, a consequent giant amplitude modulation is observed due to the strong nonlinearities. The high sensitivity of the chosen metamaterial even allows observing the nonlinear behaviors at various temperatures, but the resonance modulation induced by the nonlinear effect was distinct from that induced by the heating effect. The presented results illustrate a clever …
We studied the effects on the terahertz transmission of gammadion metamatials by adjusting the size and periodicity of the metamaterial, while keeping the periodicity and size fixed, respectively. The terahertz transmission responses of these metamaterials were analyzed using terahertz time domain spectroscopy as well as finite difference time domain electromagnetic simulations. We have found that increasing size or periodicity results in a red shift of the resonant frequency, and that increasing size or decreasing periodicity results in the formation of a second resonant frequency. We associa…
Using terahertz time domain spectroscopy we investigate the normal incidence transmission through periodically and randomly arranged planar split ring resonators (SRRs). Introduction of positional disorder in metamaterials has no effect on the quality factor of the fundamental Inductive-Capacitive (LC) resonance. The dipole resonances undergo broadening and shift in their resonance frequencies. The experiment reveals that the randomly distributed SRR structures interact incoherently at LC resonance but couple coherently at the higher frequency dipole resonance.
A terahertz metamaterial consisting of radiative slot antennas and subradiant complementary split-ring resonators exhibits plasmon induced opacity in a narrow spectral range due to the destructive interference between the bright and dark modes of the coupled oscillators. Femtosecond optical excitations instantly quench the mode coupling and plasmon oscillations, injecting photocarriers into the metamaterial. The plasmon resonances in the coupled metamaterial are transiently restored by intense terahertz pulses. The strong terahertz fields induce intervalley scattering and interband tunneling o…
All-dielectric metamaterials composed of high index and low loss dielectric resonators have become a promising way for high-efficient optical devices. However, fabricating terahertz all-dielectric metamaterials and actively tuning their properties still remain challenges. In this paper, an effective method has been developed to prepare high-quality microspheres based all-dielectric metamaterial operating in terahertz (THz) range. Then, we propose a magnetically tunable THz all-dielectric metamaterial based on liquid crystal (LC). The all-dielectric metamaterial is immersed into LC and tuned by…
Frequency Band of 0.5 THz to 1.1 THz (WR1.5 and WR1) is one of the promising bands when it comes to 6G. In this paper, we propose a novel metamaterial absorber suitable to be used at lower WR1 frequencies in TE mode. Alternatively, the design can be used as a strong absorber at lower Terahertz frequencies. In addition, when used in TM mode the absorber works as a perfect absorber at higher WR1 band.
The metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in terahertz (THz) regime holds fascinating prospects for filling the THz gap in various functional devices. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid metamaterial to actively manipulate the resonance strength of EIT effect. By integrating a monolayer graphene into a THz metal metamaterial, an on-to-off modulation of the EIT transparency window is achieved under different Fermi levels of graphene. According to the classical two-particle model and the distributions of the electric field and surface charge density, the ph…
We characterize the behaviour of split ring resonators made up of high-transition temperature YBCO superconductor using terahertz time domain spectroscopy. The superconductor metamaterial shows sharp change in the transmission spectrum at the fundamental inductive-capacitive resonance and the dipole resonance as the temperature dips below the transition temperature. Our results reveal that the high performance of such a metamaterial is limited by material imperfections and defects such as cracks, voids and secondary phases which play dominant role in partially impeding the flow of current caus…
We demonstrate ultrafast resonance switching of terahertz metamaterials through optical excitation of radiation damaged silicon placed in the gap of single split gap ring resonator. We observe the dynamic switching OFF of the fundamental resonance mode on a time scale of 4 picoseconds (ps) followed by the switching ON of the same resonance after 20 ps. Electric field distributions in the metamaterials unit cell derived through numerical simulations clearly support our experimental observations, showing that the high electric field at the resonator gaps, responsible for inductive-capacitive res…
A metamaterial made by stacked hole-array layers known as a fishnet metamaterial behaves as a hyperbolic metamaterial at wavelength much longer than hole-array period. However, the analytical formulae of effective parameters of a fishnet metamaterial have not been reported hindering the design of deep-subwavelength imaging devices using this structure. We report the new closed-form formulae of effective parameters comprising anisotropic dispersion relation of a fishnet metamaterial working at terahertz or microwave frequency. These effective parameters of a fishnet metamaterial are consistent …
We investigate the response of terahertz metamaterials made of split-ring resonators depending on the unit cell density. It is shown that the fundamental resonance has its highest Q factor for a period of one-third the resonance wavelength. Increasing or decreasing the period from that optimal period reduces the Q factor. All observations are explained by understanding radiative coupling as the dominant loss mechanism at low densities, whereas the strong inter SRR coupling enhances non-radiative losses at high densities. Our results allow designing metamaterials with adjustable Q factors and p…
Polarization is one of the basic properties of electromagnetic waves conveying valuable information in signal transmission and sensitive measurements. Conventional methods for advanced polarization control impose demanding requirements on material properties and attain only limited performance. Here, we demonstrate ultrathin, broadband, and highly efficient metamaterial-based terahertz polarization converters that are capable of rotating a linear polarization state into its orthogonal one. Based on these results we create metamaterial structures capable of realizing near-perfect anomalous refr…
We experimentally demonstrate intensity and phase modulation of terahertz radiation using actively controlled large-area planar metamaterial (metafilm) hybridized with a 12 um thick layer of a liquid crystal. Active control was introduced through in-plane electrical switching of the liquid crystal, which enabled us to achieve a reversible single-pass absolute transmission change of 20 % and a phase change of 40 deg at only 20 V.
Plasmon induced transparency (PIT) effect in a terahertz graphene metamaterial is numerically and theoretically analyzed. The proposed metamaterial comprises of a pair of graphene split ring resonators placed alternately on both sides of a graphene strip of nanometer scale. The PIT effect in the graphene metamaterial is studied for different vertical and horizontal configurations. Our results reveal that there is no PIT effect in the graphene metamaterial when the centers of both the split ring resonators and the graphene strip are collinear to each other. This is a noteworthy feature, as the …
We designed and implemented a gradient index metasurface for the in-plane focusing of confined terahertz surface waves. We measured the spatial propagation of the surface waves by two-dimensional mapping of the complex electric field using a terahertz near-field spectroscope. The surface waves were focused to a diameter of 500 \micro m after a focal length of approx. 2 mm. In the focus, we measured a field amplitude enhancement of a factor of 3.
Terahertz time domain spectroscopy and rigorous simulations are used to probe the coupling between a dark and a bright plasmonic eigenmode in a metamaterial with broken symmetry. The metamaterial consists of two closely spaced split ring resonators that have their gaps in non-identical positions within the ring. For normal incidence and a fixed polarization both lowest order eigenmodes of the split ring resonators can be excited; although one of them has to be regarded as dark since coupling is prohibited because of symmetry constraints. Emphasis in this work is put on a systematic evaluation …
We present experimental and numerical studies of localized terahertz surface waves on a subwavelength-thick metamaterial film consisting of in-plane split-ring resonators. A simple and intuitive model is derived that describes the propagation of surface waves as guided modes in a waveguide filled with a Lorentz-like medium. The effective medium model allows to deduce the dispersion relation of the surface waves in excellent agreement with the numerical data obtained from 3-D full-wave calculations. Both the accuracy of the analytical model and the numerical calculations are confirmed by spectr…
Planar metamaterials have been recently proposed for thin dielectric film sensing in the terahertz frequency range. Although the thickness of the dielectric film can be very small compared with the wavelength, the required area of sensed material is still determined by the diffraction-limited spot size of the terahertz beam excitation. In this article, terahertz near-field sensing is utilized to reduce the spot size. By positioning the metamaterial sensing platform close to the sub-diffraction terahertz source, the number of excited resonators, and hence minimal film area, are significantly re…
A novel mechanism to realize dynamically tunable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue in the terahertz (THz) regime is proposed. By putting the electrically controllable monolayer graphene under the dark resonator, the amplitude of the EIT resonance in the metal-based metamaterial can be modulated substantially via altering the Fermi level of graphene. The amplitude modulation can be attributed to the change in the damping rate of the dark mode caused by the recombination effect of the conductive graphene. This work provides an alternative way to achieve tunable slow light e…
We demonstrate nonlinear metamaterial split ring resonators (SRRs) on GaAs at terahertz frequencies. For SRRs on doped GaAs films, incident terahertz radiation with peak fields of ~20 - 160 kV/cm drives intervalley scattering. This reduces the carrier mobility and enhances the SRR LC response due to a conductivity decrease in the doped thin film. Above ~160 kV/cm, electric field enhancement within the SRR gaps leads to efficient impact ionization, increasing the carrier density and the conductivity which, in turn, suppresses the SRR resonance. We demonstrate an increase of up to 10 orders of m…
We present a superconducting metamaterial saturable absorber at terahertz frequencies. The absorber consists of an array of split ring resonators (SRRs) etched from a 100nm YBaCu3O7 (YBCO) film. A polyimide spacer layer and gold ground plane are deposited above the SRRs, creating a reflecting perfect absorber. Increasing either the temperature or incident electric field (E) decreases the superconducting condensate density and corresponding kinetic inductance of the SRRs. This alters the impedance matching in the metamaterial, reducing the peak absorption. At low electric fields, the absorption…
The development of responsive metamaterials has enabled the realization of compact tunable photonic devices capable of manipulating the amplitude, polarization, wave vector, and frequency of light. Integration of semiconductors into the active regions of metallic resonators is a proven approach for creating nonlinear metamaterials through optoelectronic control of the semiconductor carrier density. Metal-free subwavelength resonant semiconductor structures offer an alternative approach to create dynamic metamaterials. We present InAs plasmonic disk arrays as a viable resonant metamaterial at t…
We present an experimental and numerical study of a terahertz metamaterial with a nonlinear response that is controllable via the relative structural positioning of two stacked split ring resonator arrays. The first array is fabricated on an n-doped GaAs substrate and the second array is fabricated vertically above the first using a polyimide spacer layer. Due to GaAs carrier dynamics, the on-resonance terahertz transmission at 0.4 THz varies in a nonlinear manner with incident terahertz power. The second resonator layer dampens this nonlinear response. In samples where the two layers are alig…
We experimentally demonstrate at terahertz frequencies that a planar metamaterial exhibits a spectral response resembling electromagnetically induced transparency. The metamaterial unit cell consists of a split ring surrounded by another closed ring where their dimensions are such that their excitable lowest order modes have identical resonance frequencies but very different life times. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy verifies that the interference of these two resonances results in a narrow transparency window located within a broad opaque region. In contrast to previous studies this enhan…
We have fabricated a quarter-wave plate from a single layer birefringent metamaterial. For comparison, an appropriately scaled double layer meanderline structure was fabricated. At the design frequency of 639 GHz, the metamaterial structure achieves 99.9% circular polarization while the meanderline achieves 99.6%. The meanderline displays a larger bandwidth of operation, attaining over 99% circular polarization from 615 - 743 GHz, while the metamaterial achieves 99% from 626 - 660 GHz. However, both are broad enough for use with CW sources making metamaterials a more attractive choice due to t…
We theoretically investigate the terahertz dielectric response of a semiconductor slab hosting an infrared photoinduced grating. The periodic structure is due to the charge carries photo-excited by the interference of two tilted infrared plane waves so that the grating depth and period can be tuned by modifying the beam intensities and incidence angles, respectively. In the case where the grating period is much smaller than the terahertz wavelength, we numerically evaluate the ordinary and extraordinary component of the effective permittivity tensor by resorting to electromagnetic full-wave si…
We show for the first time that a planar metamaterial, an array of coupled metal split-ring resonators with a unit cell lacking mirror symmetry, exhibits asymmetric transmission of terahertz radiation (0.25-2.5 THz) propagating through it in opposite directions. This intriguing effect, that is compatible with Lorentz reciprocity and time-reversal, depends on a directional difference in conversion efficiency of the incident circularly polarized wave into one of opposite handedness, that is only possible in lossy low-symmetry planar chiral metamaterials. We show that asymmetric transmission is l…
Using terahertz time domain spectroscopy we demonstrate tunable polarization rotation and circular dichroism in intrinsically nonchiral planar terahertz metamaterials without twofold rotational symmetry. The observed effect is due to extrinsic chirality arising from the mutual orientation of the metamaterial plane and the propagation direction of the incident terahertz wave.
We will report on the electromagnetic response due to induced dipolar currents in metamaterials of 2-dimensional array of metallic elements. Used as frequency selectors, the metamaterial transmittance presents a single resonance in the region from 1 to 8 THz that can be easily selected and scaled maintaining unaltered the quality factor by choosing the size and shape of the planar metallic element and exploiting the scalability properties of the Maxwell equations. Basing on these studies, we have designed and tested a series of simple and inexpensive frequency selective metamaterials fabricate…
We present in this letter terahertz (THz) metamaterials with low ohmic losses made from low-temperature superconductor niobium nitride (NbN) films. The resonance properties are characterized by THz time-domain spectroscopy. The unloaded quality factor reaches as high as about 178 at 8 K with the resonance frequency at around 0.58 THz, which is about 24 times as many as gold metamaterials with the same structure. The unloaded quality factor also keeps high as the resonance frequency increases, which is about 90 at 1.02 THz that is close the gap frequency of NbN film. All these experimental obse…
We present a metamaterial-based terahertz (THz) sensor for thickness measurements of subwavelength-thin materials and refractometry of liquids and liquid mixtures. The sensor operates in reflection geometry and exploits the frequency shift of a sharp Fano resonance minimum in the presence of dielectric materials. We obtained a minimum thickness resolution of 12.5 nm (1/16000 times the wavelength of the THz radiation) and a refractive index sensitivity of 0.43 THz per refractive index unit. We support the experimental results by an analytical model that describes the dependence of the resonance…
We use finite element simulations in both the frequency and the time-domain to study the terahertz resonance characteristics of a metamaterial (MM) comprising a spiral connected to a straight arm. The MM acts as a RLC circuit whose resonance frequency can be precisely tuned by varying the characteristic geometrical parameters of the spiral: inner and outer radius, width and number of turns. We provide a simple analytical model that uses these geometrical parameters as input to give accurate estimates of the resonance frequency. Finite element simulations show that linearly polarized terahertz …
Metamaterials based on effective media have achieved a lot of unusual physics (e.g. negative refraction and invisibility cloaking) owing to their abilities to tailor the effective medium parameters that do not exist in nature. Recently, coding metamaterials have been suggested to control electromagnetic waves by designing the coding sequences of digital elements '0' and '1', which possess opposite phase responses. Here, we propose the concept of anisotropic coding metamaterial at terahertz frequencies, in which coding behaviors in different directions are dependent on the polarization status o…
Terahertz near fields of gold metamaterials resonant at a frequency of $0.88\,\rm THz$ allow us to enter an extreme limit of non-perturbative ultrafast THz electronics: Fields reaching a ponderomotive energy in the keV range are exploited to drive nondestructive, quasi-static interband tunneling and impact ionization in undoped bulk GaAs, injecting electron-hole plasmas with densities in excess of $10^{19}\,\rm cm^{-3}$. This process causes bright luminescence at energies up to $0.5\,\rm eV$ above the band gap and induces a complete switch-off of the metamaterial resonance accompanied by self-…
Transmission through a subwavelength terahertz fiber, which is positioned in parallel to a frequency selective surface, is studied using several finite element tools. Both the band diagram technique and the port-based scattering matrix technique are used to explain the nature of various resonances in the fiber transmission spectrum. First, we observe that spectral positions of most of the transmission peaks in the port-based simulation can be related to the positions of Van Hove singularities in the band diagram of a corresponding infinite periodic system. Moreover, spectral shape of most of t…
Graphene exhibits unique material properties and in electromagnetic wave technology, it raises the prospect of devices miniaturized down to the atomic length scale. Here we study split-ring resonator metamaterials made from graphene and we compare them to gold-based metamaterials. We find that graphene's huge reactive response derived from its large kinetic inductance allows for deeply subwavelength resonances, although its resonance strength is reduced due to higher dissipative loss damping and smaller dipole coupling. Nevertheless, tightly stacked graphene rings may provide for negative perm…
In this paper the design for an absorbing metamaterial with near unity absorbance in terahertz region is presented. The absorber's unit cell structure consists of two metamaterial resonators that couple to electric and magnetic fields separately. The structure allows us to maximize absorption by varying dielectric material and thickness and, hence the effective electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability.
Coherent radiation with frequencies ranging from 0.3 to 30 THz has recently become accessible by femtosecond laser technology. Terahertz (THz) waves have already found many applications in spectroscopy and imaging, and they can be manipulated using static optical elements such as lenses, polarizers, and filters. However, ultrafast modulation of THz radiation is required as well, for instance in short-range wireless communication or for preparing shaped THz transients for coherent control of numerous material excitations. Here, we demonstrate an all-optically created transient metamaterial that…
It is evidenced by numerical calculations that optically pumped graphene is suitable for compensating inherent loss in terahertz (THz) metamaterials. In a first step, the complex conductivity of graphene under optical pumping is calculated and the proper conditions for terahertz amplification in single layer graphene are determined. It is shown that amplification in graphene occurs for temperatures up to room temperature and for moderate pump intensities when pumped at a telecommunication wavelength $λ=1.5~\mathrm{μm}$. Furthermore, the amplification properties of graphene are evaluated and di…
The design of artificial nonlinear materials requires control over the internal resonant charge densities and local electric field distributions. We present a MM design with a structurally controllable oscillator strength and local electric field enhancement at terahertz frequencies. The MM consists of a split ring resonator (SRR) array stacked above an array of nonresonant closed conducting rings. An in-plane, lateral shift of a half unit cell between the SRR and closed ring arrays results in a decrease of the MM oscillator strength by a factor of 4 and a 40% change in the amplitude of the re…
We theoretically and numerically demonstrate an actively tunable slow light in a hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial in the terahertz (THz) regime. In the unit cell, the near field coupling between the metallic elements including the bright cut wire resonator and the dark double split-ring resonator gives rises to a pronounced transmission peak. By positioning a monolayer graphene under the dark mode resonator, an active modulation of the near field coupling is achieved via shifting the Fermi level of graphene. The physical origin can be attributed to the variation in the damping rate of the da…
A hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial (MM) is reported to achieve the active control of the broadband plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in THz region. The unit cell consists of one cut wire (CW), four U-shape resonators (USRs) and monolayer graphene sheets under the USRs. Via near-field coupling, broadband PIT can be produced through the interference between different modes. Based on different arrangements of graphene positions, not only can we achieve electrically switching the amplitude of broadband PIT, but also can realize modulating the bandwidth of the transparent window. Simultaneously,…
Ultrasensitive terahertz sensing of highly absorptive aqueous solutions remains challenging due to strong absorption of water in the terahertz regime. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective metamaterial-based sensor integrated with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy for highly absorptive water-methanol mixture sensing. This metamaterial has simple asymmetric wire structures that support multiple resonances including a fundamental Fano resonance and higher order dipolar resonance in the terahertz regime. Both the resonance modes have strong intensity in the transmission spectra wh…
Optical properties of planar thin film metamaterials were measured at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The operation of metamaterials at cryogenic temperatures is anticipated to be a promising path towards low-loss metamaterials since nonradiative losses are strongly suppressed due to higher charge mobility. A 14% increase in the quality factor of the resonances was experimentally observed. It was limited by the high electron scattering rate due to defects in thin films. Supplementary simulations assuming metamaterials made of thick films reveal a…
This paper proposes a reconfigurable planar metamaterial that can be switched between capacitive and inductive responses using local changes in the electrical conductivity of its constituent material. The proposed device is based on Babinet's principle and exploits the singular electromagnetic responses of metallic checkerboard structures, which are dependent on the local electrical conductivity. Utilizing the heating-induced metal-insulator transition of vanadium dioxide ($\mathrm{VO}_2$), the proposed metamaterial is designed to compensate for the effect of the substrate and is experimentall…
Graphene has emerged as a promising building block in the modern optics and optoelectronics due to its novel optical and electrical properties. In the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) regime, graphene behaves like metals and supports surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). Moreover, the continuously tunable conductivity of graphene enables active SPRs and gives rise to a range of active applications. However, the interaction between graphene and metal-based resonant metamaterials has not been fully understood. In this work, a simulation investigation on the interaction between the graphene layer an…
We report an experimental demonstration of thermal tuning of resonance frequency in a planar terahertz metamaterial consisting of a gold split-ring resonator array fabricated on a bulk single crystal strontium titanate (SrTiO3) substrate. Cooling the metamaterial starting from 409 K down to 150 K causes about 50% shift in resonance frequency as compare to its room temperature resonance, and there is very little variation in resonance strength. The resonance shift is due to the temperature-dependent refractive index (or the dielectric constant) of the strontium titanate. The experiment opens up…
We studied a metasurface constituted as a periodic array of semiconductor split-ring resonators. The resonance frequencies of the metasurface excited by normally incident light were found to be continuously tunable in the terahertz regime through an external magnetostatic field of suitable orientation. As such metasurfaces can be assembled into 3D metamaterials, the foregoing conclusion also applies to metamaterials comprising semiconductor split-ring resonators.
Switchable metamaterials offer unique solutions for efficiently manipulating electromagnetic waves, particularly for terahertz waves, which has been difficult since naturally occurring materials rarely respond to terahertz frequencies controllably. However, few terahertz modulators demonstrated to date exhibit simultaneously low attenuation and high modulation depth. In this letter we propose a new class of electrically-tunable terahertz metamaterial modulators employing metallic frequency-selective-surfaces (FSS) in conjunction with capacitively-tunable layers of electrons, promising near 100…
We report an experimental observation of three distinct resonances in split ring resonators (SRRs) for both vertical and horizontal electric field polarizations at normal incidence by use of terahertz time domain spectroscopy. Breaking the symmetry in SRRs by gradually displacing the capacitive gap from the center towards the corner of the ring allows for an 85% modulation of the fundamental inductive-capacitive resonance. Increasing asymmetry leads to the evolution of an otherwise inaccessible high quality factor electric quadrupole resonance that can be exploited for bio-sensing applications…
We present optically tunable magnetic 3D metamaterials at terahertz (THz) frequencies which exhibit a tuning range of ~30% of the resonance frequency. This is accomplished by fabricating 3D array structures consisting of double-split-ring resonators (DSRRs) on silicon-on-sapphire, fabricated using multilayer electroplating. Photoexcitation of free carriers in the silicon within the capacitive region of the DSRR results in a red-shift of the resonant frequency from 1.74 THz to 1.16 THz. The observed frequency shift leads to a transition from a magnetic-to-bianisotropic response as verified thro…
We present octave-wide bandpass filters in the terahertz (THz) region based on bilayer-metamaterial (BLMM) structures. The passband region has a super-Gaussian shape with a maximum transmittance approaching 70% and a typical stopband rejection of 20 dB. The design is based on a metasurface consisting of a metallic square-hole array deposited on a transparent polymer, which is stacked on top of an identical metasurface with a sub-wavelength separation. The superimposed metasurface structures were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and fabricated using a photolithogr…
We present the design, numerical simulations and experimental measurements of THz metamaterial absorbers with a broad and flat absorption top both for transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations over a wide incidence angle range. The metamaterial absorber unit cell consists of two sets of structures resonating at different but close frequencies. The overall absorption spectrum is the superposition of individual components and becomes flat at the top over a significant bandwidth. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
In this paper, we employ the novel design of the metamaterial half-wave plate by using the multiple layers of the metamaterials with some specific rotation angles. The rotation angles are given by composite pulse control which is the well-known quantum control technique. A big advantage of this method can analytically calculate the rotation angles and can be easily extended to the multiple layers. The more layers of the metamaterials can present more bandwidth of half-wave plate. In this paper, we present 1, 3, 5, 7 configurations of layers of a metamaterial half-wave plate and we demonstrate …
We study the dispersion relation of a metamaterial composed of metallic disks and bars arranged to have kagome symmetry and find that a plasmonic flat band is formed by the topological nature of the kagome lattice. To confirm the flat-band formation, we fabricate the metamaterial and make transmission measurements in the terahertz regime. Two bands formed by transmission minima that depend on the polarization of the incident terahertz beams are observed. One of the bands corresponds to the flat band, as confirmed by the fact that the resonant frequency is almost independent of the incident ang…
