We investigate the noise properties of a superconducting single electron transistor (SSET) coupled to an harmonically driven resonator. Using a Langevin equation approach, we calculate the frequency spectrum of the SSET charge and calculate its effect on the resonator field. We find that the heights of the peaks in the frequency spectra depend sensitively on the amplitude of the resonator oscillation and hence suggest that the heights of these peaks could act as a sensitive signal for detecting the small changes in the amplitude of the drive. The previously known results for the effective amplitude-dependent damping and temperature provided by the SSET for the case of a low frequency resonator are generalized for all resonator frequencies.
We analyze the current and zero-frequency current noise properties of a superconducting single electron resonator (SSET) coupled to a resonator, focusing on the regime where the SSET is operated in the vicinity of the Josephson quasiparticle resonance. We consider a range of coupling strengths and resonator frequencies to reflect the fact that in practice the system can be tuned to quite a high degree with the resonator formed either by a nanomechanical oscillator or a superconducting stripline fabricated in close proximity to the SSET. For very weak couplings the SSET acts on the resonator li…
We present an analysis of the dynamics of a nanomechanical resonator coupled to a superconducting single electron transistor (SSET) in the vicinity of the Josephson quasiparticle (JQP) and double Josephson quasiparticle (DJQP) resonances. For weak coupling and wide separation of dynamical timescales, we find that for either superconducting resonance the dynamics of the resonator is given by a Fokker-Planck equation, i.e., the SSET behaves effectively as an equilibrium heat bath, characterised by an effective temperature, which also damps the resonator and renormalizes its frequency. Depending …
We investigate the dynamical instabilities of a resonator coupled to a superconducting single-electron transistor (SSET) tuned to the Josephson quasiparticle (JQP) resonance. Starting from the quantum master equation of the system, we use a standard semiclassical approximation to derive a closed set of mean field equations which describe the average dynamics of the resonator and SSET charge. Using amplitude and phase coordinates for the resonator and assuming that the amplitude changes much more slowly than the phase, we explore the instabilities which arise in the resonator dynamics as a func…
We analyze the spectral properties of a resonator coupled to a superconducting single electron transistor (SSET) close to the Josephson quasiparticle resonance. Focussing on the regime where the resonator is driven into a limit-cycle state by the SSET, we investigate the behavior of the resonator linewidth and the energy relaxation rate which control the widths of the main features in the resonator spectra. We find that the linewidth becomes very narrow in the limit-cycle regime, where it is dominated by a slow phase diffusion process, as in a laser. The overall phase diffusion rate is determi…
Quantum mechanics demands that the act of measurement must affect the measured object. When a linear amplifier is used to continuously monitor the position of an object, the Heisenberg uncertainty relationship requires that the object be driven by force impulses, called back-action. Here we measure the back-action of a superconducting single-electron transistor (SSET) on a radiofrequency nanomechanical resonator. The conductance of the SSET, which is capacitively coupled to the resonator, provides a sensitive probe of the latter's position;back-action effects manifest themselves as an effectiv…
We investigate the behavior of a quantum resonator coupled to a superconducting single-electron transistor tuned to the Josephson quasiparticle resonance and show that the dynamics is similar in many ways to that found in a micromaser. Coupling to the SSET can drive the resonator into non-classical states of self-sustained oscillation via either continuous or discontinuous transitions. Increasing the coupling further leads to a sequence of transitions and regions of multistability.
We study a model which can describe a superconducting single electron transistor (SSET) or a double quantum dot coupled to transmission-line oscillator. In both cases the degree of freedom is given by a charged particle, which couples strongly to the electromagnetic environment or phonons. We consider the case where a lasing condition is established and study the dependence of the average photon number in the resonator on the spectral function of the electromagnetic environment. We focus on three important cases: a strongly coupled environment with a small cut-off frequency, a structured envir…
Feshbach's projector technique is employed to quantize the electromagnetic field in optical resonators with an arbitray number of escape channels. We find spectrally overlapping resonator modes coupled due to the damping and noise inflicted by the external radiation field. For wave chaotic resonators the mode dynamics is determined by a non--Hermitean random matrix. Upon including an amplifying medium, our dynamics of open-resonator modes may serve as a starting point for a quantum theory of random lasing.
We study the synchronization of a superconducting qubit to an external optical field via a mechanical resonator in a hybrid optoelectromechanical system. The quantum trajectory method is employed to investigate synchronization. The bistability in one of the qubit polarization vectors, where the qubit rotates about the polarization vector, is observed for a single quantum trajectory run. The rotation in one of the stable states is synced with the external optical drive. When the number of trajectories is significantly increased, the qubit no longer displays bistability. However, synchronization…
Magnetic-field-resilient superconducting coplanar waveguide (SCPW) resonators are essential for developing integrated quantum circuits of various qubits and quantum memory devices. Molybdenum-Rhenium (MoRe), which is a disordered superconducting alloy forming a highly transparent contact to the graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), would be a promising platform for realizing the field-resilient SCPW resonators combined with graphene- and CNT-based nano-hybrid qubits. We fabricated MoRe SCPW resonators and investigated their microwave transmission characteristics with varying temperature and ex…
We propose an active mechanism for coupling the quantized mode of a nanomechanical resonator to the persistent current in the loop of a superconducting Josephson junction (or phase slip) flux qubit. This coupling is independently controlled by an external coupling magnetic field. The whole system forms a novel solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) architecture in the strong coupling limit. This architecture can be used to demonstrate quantum optics phenomena and coherently manipulate the qubit for quantum information processing. The coupling mechanism is applicable for more generali…
We investigate the behaviour of two non-linearly coupled flexural modes of a doubly-clamped suspended beam (nanomechanical resonator). One of the modes is externally driven. We demonstrate that classically, the behavior of the non-driven mode is reminiscent of that of a parametrically driven linear oscillator: It exhibits a threshold behavior, with the amplitude of this mode below the threshold being exactly zero. Quantum-mechanically, we were able to access the dynamics of this mode below the classical parametric threshold. We show that whereas the mean displacement of this mode is still zero…
When used in Electron-Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements, superconducting thin-film resonators must be precisely oriented relative to the external magnetic field in order to prevent the trapping of magnetic flux and the associated degradation of resonator performance. We present a compact design solution for this problem that allows in-situ control of the orientation of the resonator at cryogenic temperatures. Tests of the apparatus show that when proper alignment is achieved, there is almost no hysteresis in the field dependence of the resonant frequency.
We propose and analyze a hybrid device by integrating a microscale diamond beam with a single built-in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spin to a superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) cavity. We find that under an ac electric field the quantized motion of the diamond beam can strongly couple to the single cavity photons via dielectric interaction. Together with the strong spin-motion interaction via a large magnetic field gradient, it provides a hybrid quantum device where the dia- mond resonator can strongly couple both to the single microwave cavity photons and to the single NV center spin. T…
Parametric amplification is widely used in nanoelectro-mechanical systems to enhance the transduced mechanical signals. Although parametric amplification has been studied in different mechanical resonator systems, the nonlinear dynamics involved receives less attention. Taking advantage of the excellent electrical and mechanical properties of graphene, we demonstrate electrical tunable parametric amplification using a doubly clamped graphene nanomechanical resonator. By applying external microwave pumping with twice the resonant frequency, we investigate parametric amplification in the nonline…
We propose a novel method for linear detection of weak forces using parametrically driven nonlinear resonators. The method is based on a peculiar feature in the response of the resonator to a near resonant periodic external force. This feature stems from a complex interplay between the parametric drive, external force and nonlinearities. For weak parametric drive, the response exhibits the standard Duffing-like single jump hysteresis. For stronger drive amplitudes, we find a qualitatively new double jump hysteresis which arises from stable solutions generated by the cubic Duffing nonlinearity.…
We have studied microwave response of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system (2DES) contacted by two side electrodes. Using kinetic inductance of the 2DES and inter-electrode capacitance, we have constructed a subwavelength 2D plasmonic resonator. We have shown that the resonant frequency of this circuit can be controlled by 2D electron density, external magnetic field, or size of the electrodes. This opens up possibilities for using arrays of plasmonic circuits as tunable components in different frequency ranges.
An effective method for ultrafast magnetization reversal of nanoclusters is suggested. The method is based on coupling a nanocluster to a resonant electric circuit. This coupling causes the appearance of a magnetic feedback field acting on the cluster, which drastically shortens the magnetization reversal time. The influence of the resonator properties, nanocluster parameters, and external fields on the magnetization dynamics and reversal time is analyzed. The magnetization reversal time can be made many orders shorter than the natural relaxation time. The reversal is studied for both the case…
We investigate the nonlinear response of a vibrating suspended nanomechanical beam on external periodic driving. The amplitude of the fundamental transverse mode behaves thereby like a weakly damped quantum particle in a driven anharmonic potential. Upon using a Born-Markovian master equation, we calculate the fundamental mode amplitude for varying driving frequencies. In the nonlinear regime, we observe resonances which are absent in the corresponding classical model. They are shown to be associated with resonant multi-phonon excitations. Furthermore, we identify resonant tunneling in a dynam…
We analyze the photovoltaic current through a double quantum dot system coupled to a high-quality driven microwave resonator. The conversion of photons in the resonator to electronic excitations produces a current flow even at zero bias across the leads of the double quantum dot system. We demonstrate that due to the quantum nature of the electromagnetic field in the resonator, the photovoltaic current exhibits a double peak dependence on the frequency $ω$ of an external microwave source. The distance between the peaks is determined by the strength of interaction between photons in the resonat…
We predict that quantized mechanical motion can be detected by embedding a mechanical resonator into a quantum SQUID. If the system is tuned to the regime when a plasma frequency of the SQUID matches the resonator frequency, the doubly-degenerate quantum level of the system is split by the coupling between the SQUID and the resonator. Observation of an avoided crossing as the function of external flux would be an unambiguous evidence of quantum nature of mechanical motion. We also investigate the conditions maximizing the level splitting.
Low-cost spintronic devices functioning in zero applied magnetic field are required for bringing the idea of spin-based electronics into the real-world industrial applications. Here we present first microwave measurements performed on nanomagnet devices fabricated by electrodeposition inside porous membranes. In the paper, we discuss in details a microwave resonator consisting of three nanomagnets, which functions in zero external magnetic field. By applying a microwave signal at a particular frequency, the magnetization of the middle nanomagnet experiences the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), a…
We analyze the response of a nanomechanical resonator to an external drive when it is also coupled to a single-electron transistor (SET). The interaction between the SET electrons and the mechanical resonator depends on the amplitude of the mechanical motion leading to a strongly non-linear response to the drive which is similar to that of a Duffing oscillator. We show that the average dynamics of the resonator is well-described by a simple effective model which incorporates damping and frequency renormalization terms which are amplitude dependent. We also find that for a certain range of para…
We systematically study the performance of compact lumped element planar microwave $\mathrm{Nb_{70}Ti_{30}N}$ (NbTiN) resonators operating at 5 GHz in external in-plane magnetic fields up to 440 mT, a broad temperature regime from 2.2 K up to 13 K, as well as mK temperatures. For comparison, the resonators have been fabricated on thermally oxidized and pristine, (001) oriented silicon substrates. When operating the resonators in the multi-photon regime at $T=2.2$ K, we find internal quality factors $Q_{\mathrm{int}}\simeq$ $2\cdot10^5$ for NbTiN resonators grown on pristine Si substrates, whil…
Autonomous oscillators, such as clocks and lasers, produce periodic signals \emph{without} any external frequency reference. In order to sustain stable periodic motions, there needs to be external energy supply as well as nonlinearity built into the oscillator to regulate the amplitude. Usually, nonlinearity is provided by the sustaining feedback mechanism, which also supplies energy, whereas the constituent resonator that determines the output frequency stays linear. Here we propose a new self-sustaining scheme that relies on the nonlinearity originating from the resonator itself to limit the…
