To calculate the baryon asymmetry in the baryogenesis via leptogenesis scenario one usually uses Boltzmann equations with transition amplitudes computed in vacuum. However, the hot and dense medium and, potentially, the expansion of the universe can affect the collision terms and hence the generated asymmetry. In this paper we derive the Boltzmann equation in the curved space-time from (first-principle) Kadanoff-Baym equations. As one expects from general considerations, the derived equations are covariant generalizations of the corresponding equations in Minkowski space-time. We find that, after the necessary approximations have been performed, only the left-hand side of the Boltzmann equation depends on the space-time metric. The amplitudes in the collision term on the right--hand side are independent of the metric, which justifies earlier calculations where this has been assumed implicitly. At tree level, the matrix elements coincide with those computed in vacuum. However, the loop contributions involve additional integrals over the the distribution function.
We show that the nonperturbative quantum transport equations, the `Kadanoff-Baym equations', can be understood as the ensemble average over stochastic equations of Langevin type. For this we couple a free scalar boson quantum field to an environmental heat bath with some given temperature T. The inherent presence of noise and dissipation related by the fluctuation-dissipation-theorem guarantees that the modes or particles become thermally populated on average in the long-time limit. This interpretation leads to a more intuitive physical picture of the process of thermalization and of the inter…

We use the 2 particle irreducible Schwinger-Keldysh effective action to set up consistent equations for the velocity and pressure correlations of a turbulent flow. We use these equations to derive the Kadanoff-Baym equations describing the relaxation to Kolmogorov turbulence in the absence of mean velocities.
Boltzmann equations are often used to describe the non-equilibrium time-evolution of many-body systems in particle physics. Prominent examples are the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma after a relativistic heavy ion collision. However, Boltzmann equations are only a classical approximation of the quantum thermalization process, which is described by so-called Kadanoff-Baym equations. This raises the question how reliable Boltzmann equations are as approximations to the complete Kadanoff-Baym equations. Therefore, we present in this …
The nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum fields is an initial-value problem, which can be described by Kadanoff-Baym equations. Typically, and in particular when numerical solutions are demanded, these Kadanoff-Baym equations are restricted to Gaussian initial states. However, physical initial states are non-Gaussian correlated initial states. In particular, renormalizability requires the initial state to feature n-point correlations that asymptotically agree with the vacuum correlations at short distances. In order to identify physical nonequilibrium initial states, it is therefore a preconditi…
We present a formalism that allows the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe from first principles of statistical physics and quantum field theory that is applicable to certain types of beyond the Standard Model physics (such as the neutrino Minimal Standard Model -- $ν$MSM) and does not require the solution of Boltzmann or Kadanoff-Baym equations. The formalism works if a thermal bath of Standard Model particles is very weakly coupled to a new sector (sterile neutrinos in the $ν$MSM case) that is out-of-equilibrium. The key point that allows a computation without kinetic equatio…
We describe a loopwise perturbative truncation scheme for quantum transport equations in the Kadanoff-Baym formalism, which does not necessitate the use of the so-called Kadanoff-Baym or quasi-particle ansaetze for dressed propagators. This truncation scheme is used to study flavour effects in the context of Resonant Leptogenesis (RL), showing explicitly that, in the weakly-resonant regime, there exist two distinct and pertinent flavour effects in the heavy-neutrino sector: (i) the resonant mixing and (ii) the oscillations between different heavy-neutrino flavours. Moreover, we illustrate that…
Flavour effects play an important role in the statistical evolution of particle number densities in several particle physics phenomena. We present a fully flavour-covariant formalism for transport phenomena, in order to consistently capture all flavour effects in the system. We explicitly study the scenario of Resonant Leptogenesis (RL), and show that flavour covariance requires one to consider generically off-diagonal number densities, rank-4 rate tensors in flavour space, and non-trivial generalization of the discrete symmetries C, P and T. The flavour-covariant transport equations, obtained…
It is shown that the Kadanoff-Baym equations at consistent first-order gradient approximation reveal exact rather than approximate conservation laws related to global symmetries of the system. The conserved currents and energy-momentum tensor coincide with corresponding Noether quantities in the local approximation. These exact conservations are valid, provided a Phi-derivable approximation is used to describe the system, and possible memory effects in the collision term are also consistently evaluated up to first-order gradients.
Using the non-equilibrium Green function method (Kadanoff-Baym equations) in the expanding universe, we investigate evolution of the lepton number asymmetry when the right-handed (RH) neutrinos have almost degenerate masses $|M_i^2-M_j^2| \ll M_i^2$. The resonantly enhanced $CP$-violating parameter $\varepsilon_i$ associated with the decay of the RH neutrino $N_i$ is obtained. It is proportional to an enhancement factor $(M_i^2-M_j^2) M_i Γ_j/ ((M_i^2-M_j^2)^2 +R_{ij}^2)$ with the regulator $R_{ij}=M_i Γ_i+M_j Γ_j$. The result is consistent with the previous result obtained by Garny et al., in…

However, Boltzmann equations are only a classical approximation of the quantum thermalization process which is described by the so-called Kadanoff-Baym equations. This raises the question how reliable Boltzmann equations are as approximations to the full Kadanoff-Baym equations. Therefore, we present in this paper a detailed comparison b…
Because of IR (pinch) singularities a resummation is necessary in non-equilibrium field theories, that can be performed by using Kadanoff--Baym equations. Taking Landau prescription correctly into account, Kadanoff--Baym equations reduce to Boltzmann equations only in a restricted kinematical range; in other cases a new equation (the former constraint equation) has to be considered. In relaxation time approximation this new equation results in the shifting and smearing of multiparticle thresholds.
In this more pedagogical study we want to elucidate on stochastic aspects inherent to the (non-)equilibrium real time Green's function description (or `closed time path Green's function' -- CTPGF) of transport equations, the so called `Kadanoff-Baym equations'. As a toy model we couple a free scalar boson quantum field to an exemplaric heat bath with some given temperature T. It will be shown in detail that the emerging transport equations have to be understood as the ensemble average over stochastic equations of Langevin type. This corresponds to the equivalence of the influence functional ap…
The properties of two forms of the gradient expanded Kadanoff--Baym equations, i.e. the Kadanoff--Baym and Botermans-Malfliet forms, suitable to describe the transport dynamics of particles and resonances with broad spectral widths, are discussed in context of conservation laws, the definition of a kinetic entropy and the possibility of numerical realization. Recent results on exact conservations of charge and energy-momentum within Kadanoff-Baym form of quantum kinetics based on local coupling schemes are extended to two cases relevant in many applications. These concern the interaction via a…
We derive a kinetic equation with a non-Markovian collision term which includes a memory effect, from Kadanoff-Baym equations in $ϕ^4$ theory within the three-loop level for the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action. The memory effect is incorporated into the kinetic equation by a generalized Kadanoff-Baym ansatz.Based on the kinetic equations with and without the memory effect, we investigate an influence of this effect on decay of a single particle excitation with zero momentum in 3+1 dimensions and the spatially homogeneous case. Numerical results show that, while the time evoluti…
Entropy production in non-Abelian gauge theory is discussed in the limit of vanishing classical fields. Based on the Kadanoff-Baym equation with the leading order self-energy in the temporal axial gauge, the kinetic entropy is introduced and is proven to increase for a given self-energy. Numerical simulation of the Kadanoff-Baym equation for the non-Abelian gauge theory is performed in 2+1 dimensions. Starting from anisotropic distribution in momentum space, relaxation to isotropic distribution proceeds and the entropy is produced due to off-shell scattering of massive transverse polarization …
In this article we study the time evolution of an interacting field theoretical system, i.e. ϕ^4-field theory in 2+1 space-time dimensions, on the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for a spatially homogeneous system including the self-consistent tadpole and sunset self-energies. We find that equilibration is achieved only by inclusion of the sunset self-energy. Simultaneously, the time evolution of the scalar particle spectral function is studied for various initial states. We also compare associated solutions of the corresponding Boltzmann equation to the full Kadanoff-Baym theory. This co…
A generalized quantum kinetic equation (RKE) of the Kadanoff-Baym type is obtained on the basis of the Heisenberg equations of motion where the time evolution and space translation are separated from each other by means of the covariant method. The same approach is used also for a covariant modification of the real-time Green's functions method based on the Wigner representation. The suggested approach does not contain arbitrariness' elements and uncertainties which often arise from derivation of RKE on the basis of the motion equations of the Kadanoff-Baym type for the correlation functions i…
The generation of a baryon asymmetry via leptogenesis is usually studied by means of classical kinetic equations whose applicability to processes in the hot and expanding early universe is questionable. The approximations implied by the state-of-the-art description can be tested in a first-principle approach based on nonequilibrium field theory techniques. Here, we apply the Schwinger-Keldysh/Kadanoff-Baym formalism to a simple toy model of leptogenesis. We find that, within the toy model, medium effects increase the vertex contribution to the CP-violating parameter. At high temperatures it is…
In the baryogenesis via leptogenesis scenario the self-energy contribution to the CP-violating parameter plays a very important role. Here, we calculate it in a simple toy model of leptogenesis using the Schwinger-Keldysh/Kadanoff-Baym formalism as starting point. We show that the formalism is free of the double-counting problem typical for the canonical Boltzmann approach. Within the toy model, medium effects increase the CP-violating parameter. In contrast to results obtained earlier in the framework of thermal field theory, the medium corrections are linear in the particle number densities.…
Starting from the Kadanoff-Baym relativistic transport equation and the multiple scattering expansion of the self-energy, we obtain the Boltzmann collision terms for any number of participating particles to all orders in perturbation theory within a quasi-particle approximation. This work completes a program initiated by Carrington and Mrowczynski and developed further by present authors and Weinstock in recent literature.
In the perturbation theory, trasnport phenomena in hot non-Abelian gauge theories like QCD are often plagued with infrared singularities or nonperturbative effects. We show, in the context of the Kadanoff & Baym formalism, that there are certain nonequilibrium processes which are free from such difficulties. For these processes, due to an interplay between the macroscopic and microscopic physics, characteristic time scale (the mesoscale) naturally enters as an infrared cutoff and purely perturbative description by the Boltzmann equation is valid.
We show from first principles the emergence of classical Boltzmann equations from relativistic nonequilibrium quantum field theory as described by the Kadanoff-Baym equations. Our method applies to a generic quantum field, coupled to a collection of background fields and sources, in a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime. The analysis is based on analytical solutions to the full Kadanoff-Baym equations, using the WKB approximation. This is in contrast to previous derivations of kinetic equations that rely on similar physical assumptions, but obtain approximate equations of motion from a gradien…
We show how the two physically-distinct sources of CP-asymmetry relevant to scenarios of leptogenesis: (i) resonant mixing and (ii) oscillations between different flavours can be unambiguously identified within the Kadanoff-Baym formalism. These contributions are isolated by analyzing the spectral structure of the non-equilibrium propagators without relying on the definition of particle number densities. The mixing source is associated with the usual mass shells, whereas the oscillation source is identified with a third intermediate shell. In addition, we identify terms lying on the oscillatio…
The cosmological baryon asymmetry can be explained as remnant of heavy Majorana neutrino decays in the early universe. We study this out-of-equilibrium process by means of Kadanoff-Baym equations which are solved in a perturbative expansion. To leading order the problem is reduced to solving a set of Boltzmann equations for distribution functions.
A novel refinement of the conventional treatment of Kadanoff--Baym equations is suggested. Besides the Boltzmann equation another differential equation is used for calculating the evolution of the non-equilibrium two-point function. Although it was usually interpreted as a constraint on the solution of the Boltzmann equation, we argue that its dynamics is relevant to the determination and resummation of the particle production cut contributions. The differential equation for this new contribution is illustrated in the example of the cubic scalar model. The analogue of the relaxation time appro…
We make use of the formalism developed in Ref. [1], and calculate the chargino mediated baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The formalism makes use of a gradient expansion of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for mixing fermions. For illustrative purposes, we first discuss the semiclassical transport equations for mixing bosons in a space-time dependent Higgs background. To calculate the baryon asymmetry, we solve a standard set of diffusion equations, according to which the chargino asymmetry is transported to the top sector, where it biases sphaleron transitions. At the end …
The quantum time evolution of ϕ^4-field theory for a spatially homogeneous system in 2+1 space-time dimensions is investigated numerically for out-of-equilibrium initial conditions on the basis of the Kadanoff-Baym equations including the tadpole and sunset self-energies. Whereas the tadpole self-energy yields a dynamical mass, the sunset self-energy is responsible for dissipation and an equilibration of the system. In particular we address the dynamics of the spectral (`off-shell') distributions of the excited quantum modes and the different phases in the approach to equilibrium described by …
We derive the generalized Boltzmann equation (GBE) near equilibrium from the Kadanoff-Baym equation for quark excitation with ultrasoft momentum (~g^2T, g: coupling constant, T: temperature) in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at extremely high T, and show that the equation is equivalent to the self-consistent equation derived in the resummed perturbation scheme used to analyze the quark propagator. We obtain the expressions of the dispersion relation, the damping rate, and the strength of a quark excitation with ultrasoft momentum by solving the GBE. We also show that the GBE enables us to obtain…
By means of a relativistic microscopic approach we calculate the expansion velocity of bubbles generated during a first-order electroweak phase transition. In particular, we use the gradient expansion of the Kadanoff-Baym equations to set up the fluid system. This turns out to be equivalent to the one found in the semi-classical approach in the non-relativistic limit. Finally, by including hydrodynamic deflagration effects and solving the Higgs equations of motion in the fluid, we determine velocity and thickness of the bubble walls. Our findings are compared with phenomenological models of wa…
We describe mixing scalar particles and Majorana fermions using Closed-Time-Path methods. From the Kadanoff-Baym equations, we obtain the charge asymmetry, that is generated from decays and inverse decays of the mixing particles. Within one single formalism, we thereby treat Leptogenesis from oscillations and recover as well the standard results for the asymmetry in Resonant Leptogenesis, which apply when the oscillation frequency is much larger than the decay rate. Analytic solutions for two mixing neutral particles in a constant-temperature background illustrate our results qualitatively. We…
