We consider incommensurate $d$-density wave order in underdoped high temperature superconductors. We find that Fermi surface reconstruction can correctly capture the phenomenology of the recent quantum oscillation experiments that suggest incommensurate order. The predicted frequencies are a frequency around 530 T arising from the electron pocket, a hole frequency at around 1650 T, and a new low frequency from a smaller hole pocket at 250 T for which there are some indications that require further investigation. The oscillation corresponding to the electron pocket will be further split due to bilayer coupling but the splitting is sufficiently small to require more refined measurements. The truly incommensurate $d$-density wave breaks both time reversal and inversion but the product of these two symmetry operations is preserved. There is some similarity of our results with the spiral spin density wave order, which, as pointed out by Overhauser, also breaks time reversal and inversion. Calculations corresponding to higher order commensuration produces results similar to anti-phase spin stripes, but appear to us to be an unlikely explanation of the experiments. The analysis of the Gorkov equation in the mixed state shows that the oscillation frequencies are unshifted from the putative normal state and the additional Dingle factor arising from the presence of the mixed state can provide a subtle distinction between the spiral spin density wave and the $d$-density wave.
We report measurements of quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in the high-temperature superconductor (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in optimally doped, underdoped and undoped regimes. In the underdoped sample, spin-density wave (SDW) order forms at $\sim$85 K, followed by superconductivity at $\sim$ 28 K. We find the emergence of a normal-state order that suppresses SDW at a temperature $T^{\ast} \sim$ 60 K and argue that this normal-state order is a precursor to superconductivity.
The nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting gap is a hallmark of the cuprate high T$_c$ superconductors. Surprisingly recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of deeply underdoped cuprates revealed a nodeless energy gap which is adhered to the Fermi surface. Importantly this phenomenon is observed for compounds across several different cuprate families. In this letter we propose an exciting possibility, namely the fully gapped state is a topological superconductor.
Assuming antiferromagnetic orbital correlations to model the pseudogap state in the underdoped high-temperature superconductors, we study how this correlation is distinguished from the d-wave superconductivity correlation with including the finite-range antiferromagnetic correlation effect. In spite of the fact that both correlations have the same d-wave symmetry, the contributions from each correlation is clearly distinguished in the spectral weight and the density of states.
We develop a theory for light-induced superconductivity in underdoped cuprates in which the competing bond-density wave order is suppressed by driving phonons with light. Close to a bond-density wave instability in a system with a small Fermi surface, such as a fractionalized Fermi liquid, we show that the coupling of electrons to phonons is strongly enhanced at the bond-density wave ordering wavevectors, leading to a strong softening of phonons at these wavevectors. For a model of classical phonons with anharmonic couplings, we show that the combination of strong softening and driving can lea…
We propose that an extension of the exciton concept to doped Mott insulators offers a fruitful insight into challenging issues of the copper oxide superconductors. In our extension, new fermionic excitations called cofermions emerge in conjunction to generalized excitons. The cofermions hybridize with conventional quasiparticles. Then a hybridization gap opens, and is identified as the pseudogap observed in the underdoped cuprates. The resultant Fermi-surface reconstruction naturally explains a number of unusual properties of the underdoped cuprates, such as the Fermi arc and/or pocket formati…
Preformed pairs above $T_c$ and the two-gap scenarios are two main proposals for describing the low doping pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates. Very recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments have shown features which were interpreted as evidence for preformed pairs. Here it is shown that those results can be explained also in the context of the two-gap scenario if self-energy effects are considered. The discussion is based on the $d$-CDW theory or the flux phase of the $t-J$ model.
Considering a possibility that the pseudogap state in the underdoped high-$T_{c}$ superconductors is not due to a superconducting correlation, we study the tunneling spectroscopy below $T_{c}$ based on the phenomenological models of the pseudogap state. Specifically we consider two cases: (1) the pseudogap is a simple suppression of the density of states with an unknown origin; (2) the pseudogap state is due to an antiferromagnetic correlation. For both cases we calculate $dI/dV$ using the BTK theory. The results are discussed in comparison with experiments.
We present a comparative study of Nernst effect and resistivity in underdoped samples of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$. The Nernst effect presents a peak in a region of the H-T diagram where resistivity shows a non-metallic temperature dependence. Our results illustrate that the mechanism of dissipation in the mixed state of underdoped cuprates is poorly understood. Large quantum superconducting fluctuations and vanishing vortex viscosity are among suggested explanations for an enhanced Nernst signal close to the superconductor-insulator boundary.
Angle resolved photoemission experiments by Kanigel, et al (cond-mat/0605499) [Nature Physics 2, 447 (2006)] have made a remarkable observation that low energy electronic excitations in the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors exist on open ``Fermi arcs'' instead of a closed Fermi surface. These arcs shrink upon cooling, with the arc length appearing to extrapolate to nodal points at zero temperature. We show that this striking non-Fermi liquid behavior could result from the underdoped normal state above Tc lying in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition between a d-wave supe…
A wave function is proposed for the "$4\times 4$" inhomogeneous structures observed on cuprate superconductors. It is based on the Gutzwiller-RVB technique proposed in recent papers, and consists of a Wigner solid of hole pairs embedded in a sea of d-wave spin singlet pairs. Arguments are given that the nodal quasiparticles may remain unscattered and even superconducting on such a structure.
Fluctuation effects in underdoped cuprates under high fields are examined by trying to fit theoretical results to resistivity and Nernst data in vortex states. The superconducting (SC) fluctuation in underdoped cuprates includes not only the ordinary thermal contribution but also a large amount of quantum dynamical contributions. Together with this, the presence of a SC pseudogap region T_0-T_{c0} increasing with underdoping is found to be the origin of the Nernst coefficient becoming anomalously smaller and the in-plane coherence length {\it apparently} increasing with underdoping.
The Josephson coupling between optimally cuprate superconductors separated by a spacer with a finite energy cooperon excitation which contributes to the Josephson coupling strength, is examined. For an underdoped cuprate barrier in its normal state, the YRZ model gives a good description of the temperature dependent enhanced Josephson coupling. A detailed examination of origin of the enhancement shows a significant contribution from the cooperon excitation which is comparable to that from nodal quasiparticles.
Recent observations of slow magneto-oscillations in some underdoped cuprate superconductors are one of the most striking discoveries in the field of superconductivity since many probes of underdoped cuprates clearly point to a non Fermi-liquid normal state. We show that a large magnitude and strong magnetic-field dependence of the residual resistance invalidate the conventional interpretation of the magneto-oscillations as a normal-state dHvA effect. We propose that the oscillations are most likely caused by a quantum interference of vortex and crystal lattice modulations of the order paramete…
We study the effects of the leading irrelevant perturbations on chiral symmetry breaking in the effective $QED_3$ theory of d-wave superconductor-insulator transition in underdoped cuprates. For weak symmetry breaking, the effect of a perturbation on energies of various insulating states can be classified according to its engineering dimension in the maximally symmetric theory. Considering the velocity anisotropy, repulsive interactions, and higher order derivatives we show that the insulating state with the lowest energy is the spin density wave.
We calculate the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect waveform using the canonical ensemble for different Fermi surface scenarios applicable to the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.5, in which quantum oscillations have recently been observed. The harmonic content of the dHvA waveform of the principal F ~ 500 T frequency is consistent with the existence of a second thermodynamically dominant section of Fermi surface that acts primarily as a charge reservoir. Oscillations in the charge density to and from this reservoir are shown to potentially contribute to the observed large quantum osc…
We study underdoped high-Tc superconductors YBa2Cu3O6.5 and YBa2Cu4O8 using first-principles pseudopotential methods with additional Coulomb interactions at the Cu atoms, and obtain Fermi-surface pocket areas in close agreement with measured Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations. With antiferromagnetic order in CuO2 planes, stable in the calculations, small hole pockets are formed near the so-called Fermi-arc positions in the Brillouin zone which reproduce the low-frequency oscillations. A large electron pocket, necessary for the negative Hall coefficient, is also formed in YBa…
Electronic evolution from an antiferromagnet to a high-Tc superconductor is revealed by angle-resolved photoemission experiments on tetragonal Ca(1.9)Na(0.1)CuO(2)Cl(2) single crystals, which were successfully grown for the first time under high pressures. In this underdoped superconductor, we found clear fingerprints of the parent insulator: a shadow band and a large pseudo-gap. These observations are most likely described by a "chemical potential shift", which contrasts clearly with the prevailing wisdom of the "pinned chemical potential" learned from the prototype La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), demons…
One of the prime manifestations of an anisotropic electronic state in underdoped cuprates is the in-plane resistivity anisotropy $Δρ\equiv(ρ_{a}-ρ_{b})/ρ_{b}$. Here we use a Boltzmann-equation approach to compute the contribution to $Δρ$ arising from scattering by anisotropic charge and spin fluctuations, which have been recently observed experimentally. While the anisotropy in the charge fluctuations is manifested in the correlation length, the anisotropy in the spin fluctuations emerges only in the structure factor. As a result, we find that spin fluctuations favor $Δρ>0$, whereas charge flu…
We show that the distribution of quantum oscillation frequencies observed over a broad range of magnetic field can be reconciled with the wavevectors of charge modulations found in nuclear magnetic resonance and resonant x-ray spectroscopy experiments in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x within a model of biaxial charge ordering occurring in a bilayer CuO2 planar system. Bilayer coupling introduces the possibility of different period modulations and quantum oscillation frequencies corresponding to each of the bonding and antibonding bands, which can be reconciled with recent experimental observations
General theory of d-wave quasiparticles coupled to phase fluctuations of superconducting order parameter is discussed. In the charge sector the superfluid density is found to conform to Uemura scaling, and the charge renormalization factor to decrease with underdoping. The spin susceptibilty exhibits four distinct regimes with increasing frequency and scales with the superconducting Tc, as observed.
We use magnetic quantum oscillations in the underdoped high Tc superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_(6+x) (x=0.56) measured over a broad range of temperatures 100 mK<T<18 K to extract the form of the distribution function describing the low-lying quasiparticle excitations in high magnetic fields. Despite the proximity of YBa_2Cu_3O_(6+x) (x=0.56) to a Mott insulating state, various broken symmetry ground states and/or states with different quasiparticle statistics, we find that our experimental results can be understood in terms of quasiparticle excitations obeying Fermi-Dirac statistics as in the Landau…
We present a study of Nernst effect in underdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in magnetic fields as high as 28T. At high fields, a sizeable Nernst signal was found to persist in presence of a field-induced non-metallic resistivity. By simultaneously measuring resistivity and the Nernst coefficient, we extract the entropy of vortex cores in the vicinity of this field-induced superconductor-insulator transition. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the thermo-electric Hall angle provides strong constraints on the possible origins of the finite Nernst signal above $T_c$, as recently discovered by Xu e…
By improving the experimental conditions and extensive data accumulation, we have achieved very high-precision in the measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$. We find that the main oscillation, so far believed to be single-frequency, is composed of three closely spaced frequencies. We attribute this to bilayer splitting and warping of a single quasi-2D Fermi surface, indicating that \emph{c}-axis coherence is restored at low temperature in underdoped cuprates. Our results do not support the existence of a larger…
We consider the coexistence of superconductivity(SC) and spin-density wave(SDW). The SC is presumed to be of $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy} (d_1 + i d_2) $ type whereas the SDW order parameter is of $BCS$/$d_{x y} $ symmetry. The Hamiltonian having such a structure is shown to have topological coexistence phases in addition to the conventional one. It is shown that the amplitudes of both the order parameters determine the nature of topological phases. A phase diagram characterizing different topological phases with their Chern numbers are obtained. The experimental realization of such topological phases…
The checkerboard pattern in the differential conductance maps on underdoped cuprates appears when the STM is placed above the O-sites in the outermost CuO$_{\text{2}}$-plane. In this position the interference between tunneling paths through the apical ions above the neighboring Cu-sites leads to an asymmetric weighting of final states in the two antinodal regions of ${\boldsymbol{k}}$-space. The form of the asymmetry in the differential conductance spectra in the checkerboard pattern favors asymmetry in the localization length rather than a nematic displacement as the underlying origin.
We have determined the electron-coupling spectrum of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra by two deconvolution-free robust methods. As hole concentration decreases, the coupling spectral weight at low energies ~<15 meV shows a twofold and nearly band-independent enhancement, while that around ~65 meV increases moderately, and that in ~>130 meV decreases leading to a crossover of dominant coupling excitation between them. Our results suggest the competition among multiple screening effects, and provide important clues to the source of suffici…
The parent phases of the Fe-arsenide superconductors harbor an antiferromagnetic ground state. Significantly, the Néel transition is either preceded or accompanied by a structural transition that breaks the four fold symmetry of the high-temperature lattice. Borrowing language from the field of soft condensed matter physics, this broken discrete rotational symmetry is widely referred to as an Ising nematic phase transition. Understanding the origin of this effect is a key component of a complete theoretical description of the occurrence of superconductivity in this family of compounds, motivat…
The electrical resistivity rho_c of the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBCO was measured perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes on ultra-high quality single crystals in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The incoherent insulating-like behavior of rho_c at high temperature, characteristic of all underdoped cuprates, is found to cross over to a coherent regime of metallic behavior at low temperature. This crossover coincides with the emergence of the small electron pocket detected in the Fermi surface of YBCO via quantum oscillations, the Hall and Seebeck coefficients and …
We present a neutron-scattering study of the static and dynamic spin correlations in the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.45) in magnetic fields up to 15 T. The field strongly enhances static incommensurate magnetic order at low temperatures and induces a spectral-weight shift in the magnetic-excitation spectrum. A reconstruction of the Fermi surface driven by the field-enhanced magnetic superstructure may thus be responsible for the unusual Fermi surface topology revealed by recent quantum-oscillation experiments.
We show how recent angle resolved photoemission measurements addressing the Fermi arcs in the cuprates reveal a very natural phenomenological description of the complex superfluid phase. Importantly, this phenomenology is consistent with a previously presented microscopic theory. By distinguishing the order parameter and the excitation gap, we are able to demonstrate how the collapse of the arcs below $T_c$ into well defined nodes is associated with the \emph{smooth} emergence of superconducting coherence. Comparison of this theory with experiment shows good semi-quantitative agreement.
We propose a possible scenario for the new metallic conductivity of underdoped and optimally doped cuprates. Charge carriers are assumed to be large polarons which form a Fermi-liquid and Cooper-like pairs below a crossover tempurature $T^{\ast}$. We use the Boltzmann equation to calculate the conductivity of self-trapped carriers and the resistivity $ρ$ as a function of temperature and doping for different cuprates. We show that various anomalies in $ρ(T)$ below $T^{\ast}$ are caused by the competing Fermi-liquid and BCS-like precursor pairing effects. Our results for $ρ$ fit well with existi…
We studied underdoped high $T_c$ superconductors using a spinon-dopon approach (or doped-carrier approach) to $t$-$t'$-$t''$-$J$ model, where spinon carries spin and dopon carries both spin and charge. In this approach, the mixing of spinon and dopon describes superconductivity. We found that a nonuniform mixing in $k$-space is most effective in lowering the $t'$ and $t''$ hopping energy. We showed that at mean-field level, the mixing is proportional to quasiparticle spectral weight $Z_-$. We also found a simple monte-carlo algorithm to calculate $Z_{-}$ from the projected spinon-dopon wavefun…
We report a polarized neutron scattering study of the orbital-like magnetic order in strongly underdoped ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.45}}$ and ${\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.98}Zn_{0.02})_3O_{6.6}}$. Their hole doping levels are located on both sides of the critical doping $p_{MI}$ of a metal-insulator transition inferred from transport measurements. Our study reveals a drop down of the orbital-like order slightly below $p_{MI}$ with a steep decrease of both the ordering temperature $T_{mag}$ and the ordered moment. Above $p_{MI}$, substitution of quantum impurities does not change $T_{mag}$, whereas it lowers sig…
Various properties of underdoped superconducting cuprates, including the momentum-dependent pseudogap opening, indicate a behavior which is neither BCS nor Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) like. To explain this issue we introduce a two-gap model. This model assumes an anisotropic pairing interaction among two kinds of fermions with small and large Fermi velocities representing the quasiparticles near the M and the nodal points of the Fermi surface respectively. We find that a gap forms near the M points resulting into incoherent pairing due to strong fluctuations. Instead the pairing near the …
We use quantum oscillation measurements to distinguish between spin and orbital components of the lowest energy quasiparticle excitations in YBa2Cu3O6.54, each of which couple differently to a magnetic field. Our measurements reveal the phase of the observed quantum oscillations to remain uninverted over a wide angular range, indicating that the twofold spin degeneracy of the Landau levels is virtually unaltered by the magnetic field. The inferred suppression of the spin degrees of freedom indicates a spin density-wave is responsible for creation of the small Fermi surface pockets in underdope…
We have measured the magnetic field and temperature dependence of specific heat on $Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}$ single crystals in wide doping and temperature regions. The superconductivity related specific heat coefficient $γ_{sc}$ and entropy $S_{sc}$ are determined. It is found that $γ_{sc}$ has a hump-like anomaly at $T_c$ and behaves as a long tail which persists far into the normal state for the underdoped samples, but for the heavily overdoped samples the anomaly ends sharply just near $T_c$. Interestingly, we found that the entropy associated with superconductivity is roughly conserved …
In the present work we address a long standing problem of the magnetic ground state and magnetic excitations in underdoped cuprates. Modelling cuprates by the extended $t-J$ model we show that there is a hidden dimensionless parameter $λ$ which drives magnetic criticality at low doping $x$. Hence we derive the zero temperature $λ-x$ phase diagram of the model. It is argued that all underdoped cuprates are close to the quantum tricritical point $x=0$, $λ=1$. The three phases "meet" at the tricritical point: (i) Néel antiferromagnet, (ii) spin spiral with antinodal direction of the spiral wave v…
We consider a model of the pseudogap specifically designed to describe the underdoped cuprates and which exhibits particle-hole asymmetry. The presence of electron pockets, besides the usual hole pockets, leads to the appearance of new vectors beyond the usual so-called octet model in the joint density of states (JDOS), which underlies the analysis of Fourier-transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) data. These new vectors are associated with distinct patterns of large amplitude in the JDOS and are expected to occur primarily at positive bias. Likewise a pseudogap Dirac point occurs …
We report quantum oscillations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.56 over a significantly large range in magnetic field extending from 24 to 101 T, enabling three well-spaced low frequencies at 440 T, 532 T, and 620 T to be clearly resolved. We show that a small nodal bilayer coupling that splits a nodal pocket into bonding and antibonding orbits yields a sequence of frequencies, F0 - ΔF, F0, and F0 + ΔF and accompanying beat pattern similar to that observed experimentally, on invoking magnetic breakdown tunneling at the nodes. The relative amplitudes of the multiple frequencies observed experimentally i…
We study the doping evolution of the electronic structure in the pseudogap state of high-Tc cuprate superconductors, by means of a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory applied to the two-dimensional Hubbard model. The calculated single-particle excitation spectra in the strongly underdoped regime show a marked electron-hole asymmetry and reveal a "s-wave" pseudogap, which display a finite amplitude in all the directions in the momentum space but not always at the Fermi level: The energy location of the gap strongly depends on momentum, and in particular in the nodal region, it …
We investigate the upper critical field in a stripe--phase and in the presence of a phenomenological pseudogap. Our results indicate that the formation of stripes affects the Landau orbits and results in an enhancement of $H_{c2}$. On the other hand, phenomenologically introduced pseudogap leads to a reduction of the upper critical field. This effect is of particular importance when the magnitude of the gap is of the order of the superconducting transition temperature. We have found that a suppression of the upper critical field takes place also for the gap that originates from the charge--den…
The main feature in the elastic neutron scattering of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 is the existence of incommensurate peaks with positions that jump from 45 to 0 degrees at 5% doping. We show that the spiral state of the t-t'-t''-J model with realistic parameters describes this data perfectly. We explain why in the insulator the peak is at 45 degrees while it switches to 0 degrees precisely at the insulator-metal transition. The calculated positions of the peaks are in agreement with the data in both phases.
We report Cu- and F-NMR studies on a four-layered high-temperature superconductor Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2(0234F(2.0)) with apical fluorine (F-1), an undoped 55 K-superconductor with a nominal Cu2+ valence on average. We reveal that this compound exhibits the antiferromagnetism (AFM) with a Neel temperature TN=100 K despite being a Tc= 55 K-superconductor. Through a comparison with a related tri-layered cuprate Ba2Ca2Cu3O6F2 (0223F(2.0)), it is demonstrated that electrons are transferred from the inner plane (IP) to the outer plane (OP) in 0234F(2.0) and 0223F(2.0), confirming the self-doped high-tempera…
In underdoped cuprates fluctuations of the phase of the superconducting order parameter play a role due to the small superfluid density. We consider the effects of phase fluctuations assuming the exchange of spin fluctuations to be the predominant pairing interaction. Spin fluctuations are treated in the fluctuation-exchange approximation, while phase fluctuations are included by Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless theory. We calculate the stiffness against phase fluctuations, ns(omega)/m*, as a function of doping, temperature, and frequency, taking its renormalization by phase fluctuations into a…
We propose to describe the spin fluctuations in the normal state of underdoped high $T_{c}$ superconductors as a manifestation of an algebraic spin liquid. We have performed calculations within the slave-boson model to support our proposal. Under the spin-charge separation picture, the normal state (the spin-pseudogap phase) is described by massless Dirac fermions, charged bosons, and a gauge field. We find that the gauge interaction is a marginal perturbation and drives the mean-field free-spinon fixed point to a more complicated spin-quantum-fixed-point -- the algebraic spin liquid, where ga…
Metals approaching the Mott insulator generate a new hierarchy in the electronic structure accompanied by a momentum dependent electron differentiation, beyond the Mott-Hubbard, Brinkman-Rice and Slater pictures of the Mott transition. To consider such nonlinear phenomenon, we develop an analytic nonperturbative theory based on operator projections combined with a self-consistent treatment of the low-energy excitations. This reproduces the formation of the Hubbard bands, Mott gap, spin fluctuations, mass divergence, diverging charge compressibility, and strongly renormalized flat and damped di…
Recent experiments strongly suggest that a Fermi surface reconstruction and multiple Fermi pockets are important common features of the underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors. A related theoretical work [Phys. Rev. B 79, 134512 (2009)] has demonstrated that a number of hallmark phenomena observed in the underdoped cuprates appear naturally in the scenario of a paired electron pocket co-existing with unpaired hole pockets. We propose Gutzwiller-projected wave-functions to describe this two-fluid state as well as two competing states in its vicinity. It is argued that a pseudogap st…
The superfluid density rho_s(T) = 1/lambda^2(T) has been measured at 2.64 GHz in highly underdoped YBCO, at 37 dopings with T_c between 3 K and 17 K. Within limits set by the transition width Delta T_c ~ 0.4 K, rho_s(T) shows no evidence of critical fluctuations as T goes to T_c, with a mean-field-like transition and no indication of vortex unbinding. Instead, we propose that rho_s displays the behaviour expected for a quantum phase transition in the (3 + 1)-dimensional XY universality class, with rho_s0 ~ (p - p_c), T_c ~ (p - p_c)^1/2 and rho_s(T) ~ (T_c - T)^1 as T goes to T_c.
Despite twenty years of research, the phase diagram of high transition- temperature superconductors remains enigmatic. A central issue is the origin of the differences in the physical properties of these copper oxides doped to opposite sides of the superconducting region. In the overdoped regime, the material behaves as a reasonably conventional metal, with a large Fermi surface. The underdoped regime, however, is highly anomalous and appears to have no coherent Fermi surface, but only disconnected "Fermi arcs". The fundamental question, then, is whether underdoped copper oxides have a Fermi s…
Central issues in the electronic structure of underdoped cuprate superconductors are to clarify the shape of the Fermi surfaces and the origin of the pseudogap. On the basis of the model proposed by Kamimura and Suwa, which bears important features originating from the interplay of Jahn-Teller physics and Mott physics, the feature of Fermi surfaces in underdoped cuprates is the presence of Fermi pockets constructed from doped holes under the coexistence of a metallic state and a local antiferromagnetic order. Below $T_{\rm c}$, the holes on Fermi pockets form Cooper pairs with d-wave symmetry …
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ system show that, at energies below 70 meV, the quasiparticle peak is well defined around the ($π$/2,$π$/2) nodal region and disappears rather abruptly when the momentum is changed from the nodal point to the ($π$,0) antinodal point along the underlying ``Fermi surface''. It indicates that there is an extra low energy scattering mechanism acting upon the antinodal quasiparticles. We propose that this mechanism is the scattering of quasiparticles across the nearly parallel segments of the Fermi sur…
We model the Fermi surface of the cuprates by one-dimensional nested parts near $(0,π)$ and $(π,0)$ and unnested parts near the zone diagonals. Fermions in the nested regions form 1D spin liquids, and develop spectral gaps below some $\sim T^*$, but superconducting order is prevented by 1D phase fluctuations. We show that the Josephson coupling between order parameters at $(0,π)$ and $(π,0)$ locks their relative phase at a crossover scale $T^{**}< T^*$. Below $T^{**}$, the system response becomes two-dimensional, and the system displays Nernst effect. The remaining total phase gets locked at $…
Here we present a combined study of the slightly underdoped novel pnictide superconductor Ba(1-x)K(x)Fe(2)As(2) by means of X-ray powder diffraction, neutron scattering, muon spin rotation (muSR), and magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Commensurate static magnetic order sets in below Tm ~ 70 K as inferred from the emergence of the magnetic (1 0 -3) reflection in the neutron scattering data and from the observation of damped oscillations in the zero-field-muSR asymmetry. Transverse-field muSR below Tc shows a coexistence of magnetically ordered and non-magnetic states, which is also confirmed by …
We resolve an existing controversy between, on the one hand, convincing evidence for the existence of competing order in underdoped cuprates, and, on the other hand, spectroscopic data consistent with a seemingly homogeneous d-wave superconductor in the very same compounds. Specifically, we show how short-range fluctuations of the competing order essentially restore the nodal d-wave spectrum from the qualitatively distinct folded dispersion resulting from homogeneous coexisting phases. The signatures of the fluctuating competing order can be found mainly in a splitting of the antinodal quasi-p…
We investigated the in-plane resistivity anisotropy for underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with improved quality. We demonstrate that the anisotropy in resistivity in the magnetostructural ordered phase arises from the anisotropy in the residual component which increases in proportion to the Co concentration $x$. This gives evidence that the anisotropy originates from the impurity scattering by Co atoms substituted for the Fe sites, rather than so far proposed mechanism such as the anisotropy of Fermi velocities of reconstructed Fermi surface pockets. As doping proceeds …
We present a minimal model for cuprate superconductors. At the unrestricted mean-field level, the model produces homogeneous superconductivity at large doping, striped superconductivity in the underdoped regime and various antiferromagnetic phases at low doping and for high temperatures. On the underdoped side, the superconductor is intrinsically inhomogeneous and global phase coherence is achieved through Josephson-like coupling of the superconducting stripes. The model is applied to calculate experimentally measurable ARPES spectra.
We have observed the plasma edge in the normal state c-axis far-infrared (far-IR) reflectivity of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) single crystals at an unlikely Sr-doping concentration x = 0.07 but not in x = 0.09. We find that the c-axis scattering rate (Gc) is surprisingly small, Gc = 13 (+_) 2 cm-1 for x = 0.07 and Gc = 24 (+_) 1 cm-1 for x = 0.09 and nearly temperature independent but increases linearly with doping up to x = 0.16. We suggest that the apparent absence of the normal state plasma edge in the previous measurements is due to the larger Gc than the screened plasma frequency of the coherent …
We report magnetoresistance measurements of ramp type superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. The junctions consist of underdoped $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ (YBCO) electrodes separated by a barrier of $YBa_{2}Cu_{2.6}Ga_{0.4}O_y$. We observe a large positive magnetoresistance, linear in the field. We suggest that this unusual magnetoresistance originates in the field dependence of the proximity effect. Our results indicate that in underdoped YBCO/N/YBCO SNS structures, the proximity effect does not exhibit the anomalously long range found in optimally doped YBCO structures. From our data…
Particle-hole symmetry in the pseudogap phase of moderately underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors evidenced from joint density of states analysis
