The main result states that every convex set-valued function defined on a real interval with compact values in a locally convex space, admits an affine selection. In the case if the target space is a real line and the values are closed real intervals, we can replace the convexity assumption by the more general condition.
We investigate Baire classes of strongly affine mappings with values in Fréchet spaces. We show, in particular, that the validity of the vector-valued Mokobodzki's result on affine functions of the first Baire class is related to the approximation property of the range space. We further extend several results known for scalar functions on Choquet simplices or on dual balls of $L_1$-preduals to the vector-valued case. This concerns, in particular, affine classes of strongly affine Baire mappings, the abstract Dirichlet problem and the weak Dirichlet problem for Baire mappings. Some of these res…
Let $φ\colon X\to Y$ be an affine continuous surjection between compact convex sets. Suppose that the canonical copy of the space of real-valued affine continuous functions on $Y$ in the space of real-valued affine continuous functions on $X$ is complemented. We show that if $F$ is a topological vector space, then $f\colon Y\to F$ is of affine Baire class $α$ whenever the composition $f\circφ$ is of affine Baire class $α$. This abstract result is applied to extend known results on affine Baire classes of strongly affine Baire mappings.
It is well known that not every convex multifunction admits an affine selection. One could ask whether there exists at least local affine selection. The answer is positive in the finite-dimensional case. The main part of this note consists of two examples of non-existence of local affine selections of convex multifunctions defined on certain infinite-dimensional Banach spaces.
In these lecture notes we present connections between the theory of iterated function systems, in particular those attractors that are graphs of multivariate real-valued fractal functions, foldable figures and affine Weyl groups, and wavelet sets.
We obtain a refinement of a selection principle for $(\mathcal{K}, λ)$-wide-$(s)$ sequences in Banach spaces due to Rosenthal. This result is then used to show that if $C$ is a bounded, non-weakly compact, closed convex subset of a Banach space $X$, then there exists a Hausdorff vector topology $τ$ on $X$ which is weaker than the weak topology, a closed, convex $τ$-compact subset $K$ of $C$ and an affine bi-Lipschitz map $T: K\to K$ without fixed points.
In the paper Henstock, McShane, Birkhoff and variationally multivalued integrals are studied for multifunctions taking values in the hyperspace of convex and weakly compact subsets of a general Banach space X. In particular the existence of selections integrable in the same sense of the corresponding multifunctions has been considered.
We study a variant of the Whitney extension problem for the space $C^{k,ω}(R^n)$. We identify this space with a space of Lipschitz mappings from $R^n$ into the space $P_k \times R^n$ of polynomial fields on $R^n$ equipped with a certain metric. This identification allows us to reformulate the Whitney problem for $C^{k,ω}(R^n)$ as a Lipschitz selection problem for set-valued mappings into a certain family of subsets of $P_k \times R^n$. We prove a Helly-type criterion for the existence of Lipschitz selections for such set-valued mappings defined on finite sets. With the help of this criterion, …
Let ${\mathfrak M}=({\mathcal M},ρ)$ be a metric space and let $X$ be a Banach space. Let $F$ be a set-valued mapping from ${\mathcal M}$ into the family ${\mathcal K}_m(X)$ of all compact convex subsets of $X$ of dimension at most $m$. The main result in our recent joint paper with Charles Fefferman (which is referred to as a "Finiteness Principle for Lipschitz selections") provides efficient conditions for the existence of a Lipschitz selection of $F$, i.e., a Lipschitz mapping $f:{\mathcal M}\to X$ such that $f(x)\in F(x)$ for every $x\in{\mathcal M}$. We give new alternative proofs of this…
A. Ya. Zaslavskii's results on the existence of a linear (affine) selection for a linear (affine) or superlinear (convex) map $Φ: K \to 2^Y$ defined on a convex cone (convex set) $K$ having the interpolation property are extended. We prove that they hold true under more general conditions on the values of the mapping and study some other properties of the selections. This leads to a characterization of Choquet simplexes in terms of the existence of continuous affine selections for arbitrary continuous convex maps. A few applications to analysis are given, including a construction that leads to…
Systems of the form $x = (A x^s)^{1/s} + b$ arise in a range of economic, financial and control problems, where $A$ is a linear operator acting on a space of real-valued functions (or vectors) and $s$ is a nonzero real value. In these applications, attention is focused on positive solutions. We provide a simple and complete characterization of existence and uniqueness of positive solutions under conditions on $A$ and $b$ that imply positivity.
Lower estimates are obtained for the macroscopic scale of affine approximability of vector-valued Lipschitz functions on finite dimensional normed spaces, completing the work of Bates, Johnson, Lindenstrass, Preiss and Schechtman. This yields a new approach to Bourgain's discretization theorem for superreflexive targets.
Given $T\subset\mathbb{R}$ and a metric space $M$, we introduce a nondecreasing sequence of pseudometrics $\{ν_n\}$ on $M^T$ (the set of all functions from $T$ into $M$), called the \emph{joint modulus of variation}. We prove that if two sequences of functions $\{f_j\}$ and $\{g_j\}$ from $M^T$ are such that $\{f_j\}$ is pointwise precompact, $\{g_j\}$ is pointwise convergent, and the limit superior of $ν_n(f_j,g_j)$ as $j\to\infty$ is $o(n)$ as $n\to\infty$, then $\{f_j\}$ admits a pointwise convergent subsequence whose limit is a conditionally regulated function. We illustrate the sharpness …
The aim of this paper is to study relationships among "gauge integrals" (Henstock, Mc Shane, Birkhoff) and Pettis integral of multifunctions whose values are weakly compact and convex subsets of a general Banach space, not necessarily separable. For this purpose we prove the existence of variationally Henstock integrable selections for variationally Henstock integrable multifunctions. Using this and other known results concerning the existence of selections integrable in the same sense as the corresponding multifunctions, we obtain three decomposition theorems. As applications of such decompos…
We study Henstock-type integrals for functions defined in a Radon measure space and taking values in a Banach lattice $X$. Both the single-valued case and the multivalued one are considered (in the last case mainly $cwk(X)$-valued mappings are discussed). The main tool to handle the multivalued case is a Rådström-type embedding theorem established in [50]: in this way we reduce the norm-integral to that of a single-valued function taking values in an $M$-space and we easily obtain new proofs for some decomposition results recently stated in [33,36], based on the existence of integrable selecti…
Given a strictly positive measure, we characterize inner semicontinuous solid convex-valued mappings for which continuous functions which are selections almost everywhere are selections. This class contains continuous mappings as well as fully lower semicontinuous closed convex-valued mappings that arise in variational analysis and optimization of integral functionals. The characterization allows for extending existing results on convex conjugates of integral functionals on continuous functions. We also give an application to integral functionals on left continuous functions of bounded variati…
We continue to investigate cases when the Repovš-Semenov splitting problem for selections has an affirmative solution for continuous set-valued mappings. We consider the situation in infinite-dimensional uniformly convex Banach spaces. We use the notion of Polyak of uniform convexity and modulus of uniform convexity for arbitrary convex sets (not necessary balls). We study general geometric properties of uniformly convex sets. We also obtain an affirmative solution of the splitting problem for selections of certain set-valued mappings with uniformly convex images.
The paper deals with some properties of set-valued functions having a bounded Riesz p-variation. Set-valued integrals of a Young type for such multifunctions are introduced. Selection results and properties of such setvalued integrals are discussed. These integrals contain as a particular case set-valued stochastic integrals with respect to a fractional Brownian motion, and therefore, their properties are crucial for the investigation of solutions to stochastic differential inclusions driven by a fractional Brownian motion.
Let $T\subset\mathbb{R}$ and $(X,\mathcal{U})$ be a uniform space with an at most countable gage of pseudometrics $\{d_p:p\in\mathcal{P}\}$ of the uniformity $\mathcal{U}$. Given $f\in X^T$ (=the family of all functions from $T$ into $X$), the approximate variation of $f$ is the two-parameter family $\{V_{\varepsilon,p}(f):\varepsilon>0,p\in\mathcal{P}\}$, where $V_{\varepsilon,p}(f)$ is the greatest lower bound of Jordan's variations $V_p(g)$ on $T$ with respect to $d_p$ of all functions $g\in X^T$ such that $d_p(f(t),g(t))\le\varepsilon$ for all $t\in T$. We establish the following pointwise…
The phase retrieval problem in the classical setting is to reconstruct real/complex functions from the magnitudes of their Fourier/frame measurements. In this paper, we consider a new phase retrieval paradigm in the complex/quaternion/vector-valued setting, and we provide several characterizations to determine complex/quaternion/vector-valued functions $f$ in a linear space $S$ of (in)finite dimensions, up to a trivial ambiguity, from the magnitudes $\|ϕ(f)\|$ of their linear measurements $ϕ(f), ϕ\in Φ$. Our characterization in the scalar setting implies the well-known equivalence between the …
