We report on the observation of self-organized stripe-like structures on the as-grown surface and in the bulk of (Nd,Eu,Gd)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ single crystals. The periodicity of the stripes on the surface lies between 500 and 800 nm. These are possibly the growth steps of the crystal. Transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed stripes of periodicity in the range of 20 to 40 nm in the bulk. From electron back scattered diffraction investigations, no crystallographic misorientation due to the nanostripes has been found. Scanning tunneling spectroscopic experiments revealed nonsuperconducting regions, running along twin directions, which presumably constitute strong pinning sites.
The dynamics of quantized magnetic vortices and their pinning by materials defects determine electromagnetic properties of superconductors, particularly their ability to carry non-dissipative currents. Despite recent advances in the understanding of the complex physics of vortex matter, the behavior of vortices driven by current through a multi-scale potential of the actual materials defects is still not well understood, mostly due to the scarcity of appropriate experimental tools capable of tracing vortex trajectories on nanometer scales. Using a novel scanning superconducting quantum interfe…
We study magnetic flux interacting with arrays of pinning sites (APS) placed on vertices of hyperbolic tesselations (HT). We show that, due to the gradient in the density of pinning sites, HT APS are capable of trapping vortices for a broad range of applied magnetic fluxes. Thus, the penetration of magnetic field in HT APS is essentially different from the usual scenario predicted by the Bean model. We demonstrate that, due to the enhanced asymmetry of the surface barrier for vortex entry and exit, this HT APS could be used as a "capacitor" to store magnetic flux.
We investigate the dynamics of magnetic vortices in type II superconductors with normal state pinning sites using the Ginzburg-Landau equations. Simulation results demonstrate hopping of vortices between pinning sites, influenced by external magnetic fields and external currents. The system is highly nonlinear and the vortices show complex nonlinear dynamical behaviour.
Using numerical simulations we study the configurations, dynamics, and melting properties of vortex lattices interacting with elliptical pinning sites at integer matching fields with as many as 27 vortices per pin. Our pinning model is based on a recently produced experimental system [G. Karapetrov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 167002 (2005)], and the vortex configurations we obtain match well with experimental vortex images from the same system. We find that the strong pinning sites capture more than one vortex each, and that the saturation number of vortices residing in a pin increases with a…
The depinning current Ic versus applied magnetic field B close to the transition temperature Tc of Nb thin films with randomly diluted triangular arrays of antidots is investigated. % Our experiments confirm essential features in Ic(B) as predicted by Reichhardt and Olson Reichhardt [Phys.Rev. B 76, 094512 (2007)]. % We show that, by introducing disorder into periodic pinning arrays, Ic can be enhanced. % In particular, for arrays with fixed density n_p of antidots, an increase in dilution Pd induces an increase in Ic and decrease of the flux-flow voltage for B>Bp=n_p Phi_0.
We present simulations of flux-gradient-driven superconducting rigid vortices interacting with square and triangular arrays of columnar pinning sites in an increasing external magnetic field. These simulations allow us to quantitatively relate spatio-temporal microscopic information of the vortex lattice with typically measured macroscopic quantities, such as the magnetization $M(H)$. The flux lattice does not become completely commensurate with the pinning sites throughout the sample at the magnetization matching peaks, but forms a commensurate lattice in a region close to the edge of the sam…
The vortex patterns stabilized by the square array of artificial pinning sites with a tunable pinning strength are studied by using a phenomenological approach in the London limit. The transitions between pinned and deformed triangular lattices are analyzed as a function of the amplitude of the vortex-pinning site interaction and the characteristic length-scale of this interaction. The critical current and different phases of vortex lattice are studied in presence of external transport current.
We study theoretically the effects of heating on the magnetic flux moving in superconductors with a periodic array of pinning sites (PAPS). The voltage-current characteristic (VI-curve) of superconductors with a PAPS includes a region with negative differential resistivity (NDR) of S-type (i.e., S-shaped VI-curve), while the heating of the superconductor by moving flux lines produces NDR of N-type (i.e., with an N-shaped VI-curve). We analyze the instability of the uniform flux flow corresponding to different parts of the VI-curve with NDR. Especially, we focus on the appearance of the filamen…
We examine the vortex states in a 2D superconductor interacting with a square array of pinning sites. As a function of pinning size or strength we find a series of novel phases including multi-vortex and composite superlattice states such as aligned dimer and trimer configurations at individual pinning sites. Interactions of the vortices give rise to an orientational ordering of the internal vortex structures in each pinning site. We also show that these vortex states can give rise to a multi-stage melting behavior.
High-resolution scanning Hall probe microscopy has been used to image vortex configurations in very large periodic arrays of artificial pinning sites. Strong matching effects are seen at fields where either one or two vortices can sit at a site; with three vortices per site, however, no clear matching is observed. Matching effects have been also been observed at several fractional multiples of the matching field, including 1/5, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 3/4. These fractional values are characterized by striking domain structure and grain boundaries.
We present results from extensive simulations of driven vortex lattices interacting with periodic arrays of pinning sites. Changing an applied driving force produces a rich variety of novel dynamical plastic flow phases which are very distinct from those observed in systems with random pinning arrays. Signatures of the transition between these different dynamical phases include sudden jumps in the current-voltage curves as well as marked changes in the vortex trajectories and the vortex lattice order. Several dynamical phase diagrams are obtained as a function of commensurability, pinning stre…
We numerically examine the manipulation of vortices interacting with a moving trap representing a magnetic force tip translating across a superconducting sample containing a periodic array of pinning sites. As a function of the tip velocity and coupling strength, we find five distinct dynamic phases, including a decoupled regime where the vortices are dragged a short distance within a pinning site, an intermediate coupling regime where vortices in neighboring pinning sites exchange places, an intermediate trapping regime where individual vortices are dragged longer distances and exchange modes…
The nanostructure and magnetic properties of polycrystalline MgCNi_3 were studied by x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. While the bulk flux-pinning force curve F_p(H) indicates the expected grain-boundary pinning mechanism just below T_c = 7.2 K, a systematic change to pinning by a nanometer-scale distribution of core pinning sites is indicated by a shift of F_p(H) with decreasing temperature. The lack of scaling of F_p(H) suggests the presence of 10 to 20% of nonsuperconducting regions inside the grains, which are smaller than the diameter of fluxon cor…
We present a microscopic derivation, without electrodynamical assumptions, of $B(x,y,H(t))$, $M(H(t))$, and $J_c(H(t))$, in agreement with experiments on strongly pinned superconductors, for a range of values of the density and strength of the pinning sites. We numerically solve the overdamped equations of motion % dynamics of these flux-gradient-driven vortices which can be temporarily trapped at pinning centers. The field is increased (decreased) by the addition (removal) of flux lines at the sample boundary, and complete hysteresis loops can be achieved by using flux lines with opposite ori…
We present measurements of how a single vortex line in superfluid helium interacts with a macroscopic bump on the chamber wall. At a general level our measurements confirm computational work on vortex pinning by a hemispherical bump, but not all the details agree. Rather than observing a unique pin location, we find that a given applied velocity field can support pinning at multiple sites along the bump, both near its apex and near its edge. We also find that pinning is less favorable than expected. A vortex can pass near or even traverse the bump itself with or without pinning, depending on i…
Vortices in a narrow superconducting strip with a square array of pinning sites are studied. The interactions of vortices with other vortices and with external sources (applied magnetic field and transport current) are calculated via a screened Coulomb model. The edge barrier is taken into account and shown to have an important role on the system dynamics. Numerical simulations in this approach show that the field dependent magnetic moment presents peaks corresponding to history dependent configurations of the vortex lattice. Some effects of the edge barrier on the I-V characteristics are also…
The synthesis and characterization of PVA (Poly Vinyl Acetate) doped bulk MgB2 superconductor is reported here. PVA is used as a Carbon source. PVA doping effects made two distinguishable contributions: first enhancement of Jc field performance and second an increase in Hc2 value, both because of carbon incorporation into MgB2 crystal lattice. The susceptibility measurement reveals that Tc decreased from 37 to 36 K. Lattice parameter a decreased from 3.085 A to 3.081 A due to the partial substitution of Carbon at Boron site. PVA doped sample exhibited the Jc values greater than 10^5 A/cm2 at 5…
The relationships among charge order, spin fluctuations, and superconductivity in underdoped cuprates remain controversial. We use neutron scattering techniques to study these phenomena in La$_{1.93}$Sr$_{0.07}$CuO$_4$, a superconductor with a transition temperature of $T_c = 20$~K. At $T\ll T_c$, we find incommensurate spin fluctuations with a quasielastic energy spectrum and no sign of a gap within the energy range from 0.2 to 15 meV. A weak elastic magnetic component grows below $\sim10$~K, consistent with results from local probes. Regarding the atomic lattice, we have discovered unexpecte…
We examine the stability of a pinned superfluid helium vortex line by measuring its persistence at elevated temperatures. Each vortex terminates at the surface of the container, at either a rounded bump or a conical indentation. We find that pinning with the bump termination is much easier to overcome thermally. This behavior would not be expected from considerations of vortex line tension alone. We take the observations as evidence of an additional contribution to the pinning energetics arising from the interaction of the superfluid order parameter singularity with the curvature of the contai…
Disorder induced melting, where the increase in positional entropy created by random pinning sites drives the order-disorder transition in a periodic solid, provides an alternate route to the more conventional thermal melting. Here, using real space imaging of the vortex lattice through scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we show that in the presence of weak pinning, the vortex lattice in a type II superconductor disorders through two distinct topological transitions. Across each transition, we separately identify metastable states formed through superheating of the low temperature state or super…
The bound states of two electrons in the adiabatic Holstein-Hubbard model are studied numerically in one and two dimensions from the anticontinuous limit. This model involves a competition between a local electron-phonon coupling (with a classical lattice) which tends to form pairs of electrons and the repulsive Hubbard interaction $U \geq 0$ which tends to break them. In 1D, the ground-state always consists in a pair of localized polarons in a singlet state. They are located at the same site for U=0. Increasing U, there is a first order transition at which the bipolaron becomes a spin singlet…
