We present a numerical model describing a circularly symmetric gaseous disk around the Be star chi Ophiuchi. The model is constrained by long-baseline interferometric observations that are sensitive to the H-alpha Balmer line emission from the disk. For the first time our interferometric observations spatially resolve the inner region of the circumstellar disk around chi Ophiuchi and we use these results to place a constraint on the physical extent of the H-alpha-emitting region. We demonstrate how this in turn results in very specific constraints on the parameters that describe the variation of the gas density as a function of radial distance from the central star.
We present the first observations of the circumstellar (CS) disk system 51 Ophiuchi with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. We detect several absorption lines arising from the unusual metastable atomic species NI (2D), NI (2P), and SII (2D). These levels lie 1.8 - 3.6 eV above the ground level and have radiative decay lifetimes of 2 days or less, indicating that the lines arise from warm CS gas. The high S/N FUSE spectra, obtained six days apart, also show time-variable absorption features arising from NI, NII, OI (1D), and FeIII, which are redshifted with respect to the stellar veloc…
We report the discovery in NIR with SofI at the NTT of a resolved circumstellar dust disk around a 2MASS source at the periphery of the rho Ophiuchi dark cloud. We present follow-up observations in J, H, and Ks-band obtained with ISAAC at the VLT, under 0.4"-seeing conditions, which unveil a dark dust lane oriented East-West between two characteristic northern and southern reflection nebulae. This new circumstellar dust disk has a radius of 2.15" (300 AU at 140 pc), and a width of 1.2" (170 AU at 140 pc). Thanks to its location at the periphery of the dense cores, it suffers small foreground v…
Variability is a common characteristic of pre-main-sequence stars (PMS). Near-IR variability surveys of young stellar objects (YSOs) can probe stellar and circumstellar environments and provide information about the dynamics of the on going magnetic and accretion processes. Furthermore, variability can be used as a tool to uncover new cluster members in star formation regions. We hope to achieve the deepest near-IR variability study of YSOs targeting the Rho Ophiuchi cluster. Fourteen epochs of observations were obtained with the Wide Field Camera (WFCAM) at the UKIRT telescope scheduled in a …
We present interferometric observations of the Be star 51 Ophiuchi. These observations were obtained during the science demonstration phase of the MIDI instrument at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). Using MIDI, a Michelson 2 beam combiner that operates at the N band (8 to 13 microns), we obtained for the first time observations of 51 Oph in the mid-infrared at high-angular resolution. It is currently known that this object presents a circumstellar dust and gas disk that shows a very different composition from other Herbig Ae disks. The nature of the 51 Oph system is still a myst…
Our \textit{Swift} observations of RS Oph form an unprecedented X-ray dataset to undertake investigations of both the central source and the interaction of the outburst ejecta with the circumstellar environment. Over the first month, the XRT data are dominated by emission from rapidly evolving shocks. We discuss the differences in derived parameters from those found for \textit{RXTE} at early times and the evolution of the X-ray emission to much later times. It is apparent that at late times several emission components are present. We find no strong evidence of the proposed shock break-out in …
Convection in stars excites resonant acoustic waves. The frequencies of these oscillations depend on the sound speed inside the star, which in turn depends on density, temperature, gas motion, and other properties of the stellar interior. Therefore, analysis of the oscillations provides an unrivaled method to probe the internal structure of a star. Solar-like oscillations in the primary of the visual binary 70 Ophiuchi are investigated. 70 Ophiuchi A was observed with the Harps spectrograph mounted on the 3.6-m telescope at the ESO La Silla Observatory (Chile) during 6 nights in July 2004 allo…
Mass accretion rate determinations are fundamental for an understanding of the evolution of pre-main sequence star circumstellar disks. Magnetospheric accretion models are used to derive values of the mass accretion rates in objects of very different properties, from brown dwarfs to intermediate-mass stars; we test the validity of these models in the brown dwarf regime, where the stellar mass and luminosity, as well as the mass accretion rate, are much lower than in T Tauri stars. We have measured simultaneously two infrared hydrogen lines, Pab and Brg, in a sample of 16 objects in the star-fo…
We report Hubble Space Telescope imaging obtained 155 days after the 2006 outburst of RS Ophiuchi. We detect extended emission in both [O III] and [Ne V] lines. In both lines, the remnant has a double ring structure. The E-W orientation and total extent of these structures (580+-50 AU at d=1.6kpc) is consistent with that expected due to expansion of emitting regions imaged earlier in the outburst at radio wavelengths. Expansion at high velocity appears to have been roughly constant in the E-W direction (v_{exp} = 3200+-300 km/s in the plane of the sky), with tentative evidence of deceleration …
Observations of the rho Ophiuchi star forming region with VLT ANTU and ISAAC under 0.35" seeing conditions reveal two bipolar reflection nebulosities intersected by central dust lanes. The sources (OphE-MM3 and CRBR 2422.8-3423) can be identified as spatially resolved circumstellar disks viewed close to edge-on, similar to edge-on disk sources discovered previously in the Taurus and Orion star forming regions. Millimeter continuum fluxes yield disk masses of the order of 0.01 Mo, i.e. about the mass deemed necessary for the minimum solar nebula. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with SUBARU…
The rho Oph molecular cloud is undergoing intermediate-mass star formation. UV radiation from its hottest young stars heats and dissociates exposed layers, but does not ionize hydrogen. Only faint radiation from the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of ~10-100K dust is expected at wavelengths longwards of 3mm. Yet Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) observations reveal that the rho Oph W photo-dissociation region (PDR) is surprisingly bright at centimetre wavelengths. We searched for interpretations consistent with the WMAP radio spectrum, new ISO-LWS parallel mode images and archival Spitzer data. Dust-related …
We present results of a coronographic imaging search for circumstellar dust disks with the Adaptive Optics Near Infrared System (ADONIS) at the ESO 3.6m telescope in La Silla (Chile). 22 candidate stars, known to be orbited by a planet or to show infrared excess radiation, were examined for circumstellar material. In the PSF-subtracted images no clear disk was found. We further determine the detection sensitivities and outline how remaining atmospheric fluctuations still can hamper adaptive optics observations.
We describe Spitzer/MIPS observations of the double cluster, h and $χ$ Persei, covering a $\sim$ 0.6 square-degree area surrounding the cores of both clusters. The data are combined with IRAC and 2MASS data to investigate $\sim$ 616 sources from 1.25-24 $μm$. We use the long-baseline $K_{s}$-[24] color to identify two populations with IR excess indicative of circumstellar material: Be stars with 24 $μm$ excess from optically-thin free free emission and 17 fainter sources (J$\sim$ 14-15) with [24] excess consistent with a circumstellar disk. The frequency of IR excess for the fainter sources in…
On this paper, we present simultaneous VLBA observations of the J=1-0 and J=2-1 rotational lines in the v=1 and v=2 vibrationally excited states of SiO (at 7 and 3 mm wavelengths). We have mapped these four maser lines in the circumstellar envelopes of three AGB stars: IRC +10011, Chi Cyg and TX Cam. We study the relative spatial distribution between these maser lines. In particular, for the two v=1 transitions, we found that the J=1-0 and J=2-1 maser spot distributions are unalike, challenging all the current theoretical pumping mechanisms for SiO masers (which predict quite similar distribut…
The dust disk around Beta Pic must be produced by collision or by evaporation of orbiting Kuiper belt-like objects. Here we present the Orbiting-Evaporating-Bodies scenario in which the disk is a gigantic multi-cometary tail supplied by slowly evaporating bodies like Chiron. If dust is produced by evaporation, a planet with an eccentric orbit can explain the observed asymmetry of the disk, because the periastron distribution of the parent bodies are then expected to be non-axisymmetric. We investigate the consequence for the Kuiper belt-like objects of the formation and the migration of an out…
Structure and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of externally irradiated circumstellar disks are often computed on the basis of the two-temperature model of Chiang & Goldreich. We refine these calculations by using a more realistic temperature profile which is continuous at all optical depths and thus goes beyond the two-temperature model. It is based on the approximate solution of the radiation transfer in the disk obtained from the frequency-integrated moment equations in the Eddington approximation. We come up with a simple procedure (``constant g_z approximation'') for treating the vert…
We intend to investigate separately the photospheric and circumstellar (CS) magnetic field components in seven Herbig Ae stars. The study is based on low-resolution (R ~ 2000 and 4000) spectropolarimetric data collected from 2003 to 2005 at the Very Large Telescope (ESO, Chile) with the multi-mode instrument FORS1. We show that the spectropolarimetric results strongly depend on the level of CS contribution to the stellar spectra. We have improved the determination accuracy of magnetic fields up to the 7 sigma level in the two Herbig Ae stars HD139614 and HD144432, observed in 2005 when these o…
We report the discovery of accretion disks associated with ~ 13 Myr-old intermediate/low-mass stars in h and chi Persei. Optical spectroscopy of ~ 5000 stars in these clusters and a surrounding halo population reveal 32 A-K stars with H(alpha) emission. Matching these stars with 2MASS and optical photometry yields 25 stars with the highest probability of cluster membership and EW(H(alpha)) > 5 angstroms. Sixteen of these sources have EW(H(alpha)) > 10 angstroms. The population of accreting sources is strongly spectral type dependent: H(alpha) emission characteristic of accretion, especially st…
We model the IR Spectral Energy Distribution of circumstellar disks embedded in a HII region and photoevaporated by the external UV radiation. The model applies to the photoevaporated disks (proplyds) in Orion Nebula. First we calculate the IR emission of a PMS star surrounded by a dusty globule that is immersed within an HII region. The globule is assumed to be spherical, homogeneous, optically thin in the IR and photoevaporated according to the Dyson (1968) model. Second, we consider the IR emission of a disk directly exposed to the nebular environment. The disk is passive and treated accord…
We investigate the evolution of X-ray stellar activity from the age of the youngest known star forming regions (SFR), < 1Myr, to about 100 Myr, i.e. the zero age main sequence (ZAMS) for a ~ 1M_sun star. We consider five SFR of varying age (Rho Ophiuchi, the Orion Nebula Cluster, NGC 2264, Chamaeleon I, and Eta Chamaeleontis) and two young clusters (the Pleiades and NGC 2516). Optical and X-ray data for these regions are retrieved both from archival observations and recent literature, and reanalyzed here in a consistent manner so to minimize systematic differences in the results. We study tren…
The two-layer disk models of Chiang & Goldreich (1997, henceforth CG) and its derivatives are popular among astronomers because of their simplicity and the clear predictions they make for the SEDs of T Tauri stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars. Moreover, they can be computed quickly, which is a great advantage when fitting observations using automated procedures. In this paper we wish to assess the accuracy and reliability of 2-layer models, by comparing them to detailed vertical structure models with accurate 1+1D radiative transfer. We focus on the shape of the SED, and the predicted height and "fl…
A model for irradiated dust disks around Herbig Ae stars is proposed. The model is based on the flaring disk model of Chiang & Goldreich (1997), but with the central regions of the disk removed. The inner rim of the disk is puffed up and is much hotter than the rest of the disk, because it is directly exposed to the stellar flux. If located at the dust evaporation radius, its reemitted flux produces a conspicuous bump in the SED which peaks at 2-3 micron. We propose that this emission is the explanation for the near-infrared bump observed in the SEDs of Herbig Ae stars. We study for which stel…
(abbreviated) We aim to determine the masses of the envelopes, disks, and central stars of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Class I stage. We observed the embedded Class I objects IRS 63 and Elias 29 in the rho Ophiuchi star-forming region with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) at 1.1 mm. IRS 63 and Elias 29 are both clearly detected in the continuum, with peak fluxes of 459 resp. 47 mJy/beam. The continuum emission toward Elias 29 is clearly resolved, whereas IRS 63 is consistent with a point source down to a scale of 3 arcsec (400 AU). The SMA data are combined with single-dish data, and disk…
In this paper we present detailed models of the vertical structure (temperature and density) of passive irradiated circumstellar disks around T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars. In contrast to earlier work, we use full frequency- and angle-dependent radiative transfer instead of the usual moment equations. We find that this improvement of the radiative transfer has strong influence on the resulting vertical structure of the disk, with differences in temperature as large as 70 %. However, the spectral energy distribution (SED) is only mildly affected by this change. In fact, the SED compares reason…
We present a new mode of observations with VISIR, the mid-InfraRed (mid-IR) imager and spectrometer on the VLT (ESO, Chile): the so-called BURST mode. This mode allows to reach the diffraction limit of the telescope. To illustrate results obtained with this mode, we discuss observations of disks around Herbig Ae stars. These stars are the more massive analogues of T Tauri stars and are believed to harbour circumstellar disks. The 10-20 microns atmospheric windows are well-suited to study the extended emission of these objects. With a 8 m class telescope, in fair seeing conditions, the observat…
The dust disk around Beta Pictoris must be produced by collision or by evaporation of orbiting Kuiper belt-like objects. Here we extend the already proposed Orbiting-Evaporating-Bodies (OEB) scenario in which the disk is a gigantic multi-cometary tail supplied by slowly evaporating bodies like Chiron. We show that the number of these OEBs must be several tens of millions, and that this is consistent with the number of bodies needed to explain the presence of CO and CI in the gaseous disk. We explore some possible origin of the required perturbation on the OEBs. If dust is produced by evaporati…
We improve upon the radiative, hydrostatic equilibrium models of passive circumstellar disks constructed by Chiang & Goldreich (1997). New features include (1) account for a range of particle sizes, (2) employment of laboratory-based optical constants of representative grain materials, and (3) numerical solution of the equations of radiative and hydrostatic equilibrium within the original 2-layer (disk surface + disk interior) approximation. We explore how the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a face-on disk depends on grain size distributions, disk geometries and surface densities, and st…
We present the results of a multiband survey for brown dwarfs in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud with the Wide Field Imager (WFI) camera at the ESO/MPG 2.2-m telescope on La Silla (Chile). The survey has revealed a substantial population of brown dwarfs in this southern star forming region. Candidates were selected from R, I and H-alpha imaging observations. We also observed in two medium-band filters, M855 and M915, for the purpose of spectral type determination. The former filter covers a wavelength range containing spectral features characteristic of M-dwarfs, while the latter lies in a relativ…
We present a study of the optical spectrum of the fascinating B[e] star Hen 2-90 based on new high-resolution observations taken with FEROS at the ESO 1.52m telescope in La Silla (Chile). The recent HST image of Hen 2-90 (Sahai et al. 2002) reveals a bipolar, highly ionized region, a neutral disk-like structure seen almost perfectly edge-on, and an intermediate region of moderate ionization. The slits of our observations cover the same innermost region of Hen 2-90 as the HST image, which allows us to combine the observations. Our spectra contain a huge amount of permitted and forbidden emissio…
This paper presents a detailed statistical determination of the equatorial rotation rates of classical Be stars. The rapid rotation of Be stars is likely to be linked to the ejection of gas that forms dense circumstellar disks. The physical origins of these disks are not understood, though it is generally believed that the ability to spin up matter into a Keplerian disk depends on how close the stellar rotation speed is to the critical speed at which the centrifugal force cancels gravity. There has been recent disagreement between the traditional idea that Be stars rotate between 50 and 80 per…
