Gamma-ray bursts are violent events occurring randomly in the sky. In this review, I will present the fireball model, proposed to explain the phenomenon of gamma-ray bursts. This model has important consequences for the production and observation at Earth of gravitational waves, high energy neutrinos, cosmic rays and high energy photons, and the second part of this review will be focused on these aspects. A last section will briefly discuss the topic of the use of gamma-ray bursts as standard candles and possible cosmological studies.
Gigantic cosmological gamma-ray bursts have fallen into a dichotomy of long and short bursts, each with a very different origin. The discovery of an oddball burst calls for a rethink of that classification.
We examine the recent claims that cosmic gamma-ray bursts are associated with either radio-quiet quasars or Abell clusters. These associations were based on positional coincidences between cataloged quasars or Abell clusters, and selected events from the BATSE 3B catalog of gamma-ray bursts. We use a larger sample of gamma-ray bursts with more accurate positions, obtained by the 3rd Interplanetary Network, to re-evaluate these possible associations. We find no evidence for either.
The currently accepted model for gamma-ray burst phenomena involves the violent formation of a rapidly rotating solar-mass black hole. Gravitational waves should be associated with the black-hole formation, and their detection would permit this model to be tested. Even upper limits on the gravitational-wave strength associated with gamma-ray bursts could constrain the gamma-ray burst model. This requires joint observations of gamma-ray burst events with gravitational and gamma-ray detectors. The clusters of gamma-ray bursts are considered which are assumed to be images of the repeated gamma-ray burst (GRB) sources. It is shown, that localization of the cosmic gamma-ray burst sources (GBS) is determined by the clusters of GRBs. About 100 candidates in sources are presented in the form of the catalog, which is compiled relying on the base of the BATSE data up to middle of 2000. Interaction of cosmological gamma ray burst radiation with the dense interstellar medium of host galaxy is considered. Gas dynamical motion of interstellar medium driven by gamma ray burst is investigated in 2D approximation for different initial density distributions of host galaxy matter and different total energy of gamma ray burst. We report on the catalog of Gamma--Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected with the Gamma Ray Burst Monitor aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. It includes 1082 GRBs with 40--700 keV fluences in the range from $1.3\times 10^{-7}$ to $4.5\times 10^{-4}$ erg cm$^{-2}$, and with 40--700 keV peak fluxes from $3.7\times 10^{-8}$ to $7.0\times 10^{-5}$ erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. We report in the catalog some relevant parameters of each GRB and discuss the derived statistical properties.
The low energy spectra of some gamma-ray bursts' show excess components beside the power-law dependence. The consequences of such a feature allows to estimate the gamma photometric redshift of the long gamma-ray bursts in the BATSE Catalog. There is good correlation between the measured optical and the estimated gamma photometric redshifts. The estimated redshift values for the long bright gamma-ray bursts are up to z=4, while for the the faint long bursts - which should be up to z=20 - the redshifts cannot be determined unambiguously with this method. The potentiality of a Giant Shower Array to low energy gamma rays from gamma ray bursts is discussed. Effective areas are calculated for different scenarios and the results are encouraging. If gamma ray bursts have a spectrum which continues in the high energy gamma ray region, the Pierre Auger Observatory will be able to detect it.
The work is devoted to the search for possible effect of gravitational lensing on the objects like globular stellar clusters (mesolensing) on the lightcurves and spectra of large number of gamma-ray bursts from BATSE catalogue. The general properties and different types of such event were considered. As the result 11 possibly mesolensed gamma-ray bursts were found. The properties of possible mesolensed are investigated.
The SPI anticoincidence shield consists of 91 BGO crystals and is operated as a nearly omnidirectional gamma-ray burst detector above ~75 keV. Since the start of the mission 269 gamma-ray burst candidates have been detected. 110 bursts have been confirmed with the instruments included in the 3rd Interplanetary Network. Here we present a preliminary statistical analysis of the SPI-ACS sample of gamma-ray bursts and gamma-ray burst candidates; in particular we discuss the duration distribution of the bursts. I review some of the highlights of the Rome Workshop on Gamma-Ray Bursts, and discuss some of the questions these results pose about the nature and origin of gamma-ray bursts.
We propose a new empirical redshift indicator for gamma-ray bursts. This indicator is easily computed from the gamma-ray burst spectral parameters, and its duration, and it provides ``pseudo-redshifts'' accurate to a factor two. Possible applications of this redshift indicator are briefly discussed.
All gamma-ray bursts are observed to have approximately the same characteristic gamma-ray energy. We show in this article that for bursts in the BATSE data set, this property as measured by the E-peak value is not an instrumental effect, but a physical property of gamma-ray bursts.
A phenomenological model is presented to explain the light curves of gamma-ray bursts. Gamma-rays are produced in a narrow beam which sweeps through space due to the precession of a slaved accretion disc. The light curve expected from such a precessing luminosity cone can explain the complex temporal behavior of bright gamma-ray bursts.
Although they were discovered more than 25 years ago, gamma-ray bursts are still a mystery. Even their characteristic distance is highly uncertain. All that we can be confident about is that they involve compact objects and relativistic plasma. Current ideas and prospects are briefly reviewed. There are, fortunately, several feasible types of observation that could soon clarify the issues.
If gamma ray bursts produce a total energy of 10^54 ergs and this energy is concentrated on the high energy tail of the spectrum E> 1 TeV, then they may account for the observed diffuse extragalactic gamma ray emission for energies > 100 MeV. Such an energy could be released if the GRB's are produced by the burning of the total mass of a neutron star in a phase transition which violates baryon number.
The Short GAmma Ray Front Air Cherenkov Experiment (SGARFACE) is operated at the Whipple Observatory utilizing the Whipple 10m gamma-ray telescope. SGARFACE is sensitive to gamma-ray bursts of more than 100MeV with durations from 100ns to 35us and provides a fluence sensitivity as low as 0.8 gamma-rays per m^2 above 200MeV (0.05 gamma-rays per m^2 above 2GeV) and allows to record the burst time structure.
We propose a model in which prompt gamma emission of gamma-ray bursts is the synchrotron radiation of electron-positron plasma in the ordered magnetic field in the direct vicinity of horizon of a young black hole formed in the core collapse of a massive star. This mechanism can naturally explain high degree of polarization of the gamma-ray flux and hard low energy photon spectral index. Interaction of gamma-quanta with ambient matter provides a mechanism of formation of relativistic ejecta which are responsible for the gamma-ray burst afterglows.
I give a summary of the prompt X-/gamma-ray detections of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) with the BeppoSAX satellite and discuss some significant results obtained from the study of the prompt emission of these GRBs obtained with the BeppoSAX Gamma Ray Burst Monitor and Wide Field Cameras.
My conviction is explained that none of the daily gamma-ray bursts comes from cosmic distances. In particular, nearby reflection nebulae have been mistaken for host galaxies.
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate photopion production from Fermi-accelerated protons and the resulting neutrino production in gamma-ray bursts. Unless internal shocks occur at quite large distance from the center, ultra high-energy protons are depleted by photopion production and synchrotron radiation. Internal shocks at fiducial distance cause neutrino bursts, which accompany gamma-ray bursts originating from electromagnetic cascades.
Gamma-ray bursts provide what is probably one of the messiest of all astrophysical data sets. Burst class properties are indistinct, as overlapping characteristics of individual bursts are convolved with effects of instrumental and sampling biases. Despite these complexities, data mining techniques have allowed new insights to be made about gamma-ray burst data. We demonstrate how data mining techniques have simultaneously allowed us to learn about gamma-ray burst detectors and data collection, cosmological effects in burst data, and properties of burst subclasses. The discovery by the BeppoSAX satellite of X-ray afterglow emission from the gamma-ray burst which occurred on 28 February 1997 produced a revolution in our knowledge of the gamma-ray burst phenomenon. Along with the discovery of X-ray afterglows, the optical afterglows of gamma-ray bursts were discovered and the distance issue was settled, at least for long $γ$-ray bursts. In this letter we propose a physical explanation for recently reported correlations between pairs of close and antipodal gamma-ray bursts from publicly available BATSE catalogue. Our model is based on the cosmological scenario in which bursters are located at cosmological distances of order of 0.5--2~Gpc. Observed distribution of gamma-ray bursts strongly suports this assumption. If so gamma-ray bursts may provide a very good probe for investigating the topological structure of the Universe. Gamma-ray bursts are still a puzzle. In particular, the central engine, the total energy and the very narrow distribution of peak energies challenge model builders. We consider here an extreme model of gamma-ray bursts based on highly red- and blue-shifted positron annihilation radiation. The burst emerges from inside the red hole created by the complete gravitational collapse of the GRB progenitor.
Gamma-ray bursters emit a small fraction of their flux in X rays, and because X-ray detectors are often very sensitive they may probe the gamma-ray burst universe more deeply than the current best gamma-ray instruments. On the reasonable assumptions that spectra of bursts observed by BATSE may be used to predict the X-ray fluxes of gamma-ray bursts, and that any corona of bursts around M31 is similar to the one around the Milky Way, we predict the rate at which the wide field cameras on board BeppoSAX should detect bursts from the Milky Way and M31. Gamma-ray observations above 200 MeV are conventionally made by satellite-based detectors. The EGRET detector on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has provided good sensitivity for the detection of bursts lasting for more than 200 ms. Theoretical predictions of high-energy gamma-ray bursts produced by quantum-mechanical decay of primordial black holes (Hawking 1971) suggest the emission of bursts on shorter time scales. Using the Euclidean value of <V/Vmax> as a cosmological distance indicator, we derive the isotropic-equivalent characteristic peak luminosity of gamma-ray bursts both longer and shorter than 2 s. The short bursts have essentially the same characteristic peak luminosity of 0.6 x 10^51 erg (0.064s)^-1 as do the long bursts. This may apply also to bursts with durations less than 0.25 s. The local space density of short bursts is around three times lower than that of long bursts.
Gamma-ray bursts can be divided into three groups ("short", "intermediate", "long") with respect to their durations. The third type of gamma-ray bursts - as known - has the intermediate duration. We show that the intermediate group is the softest one. An anticorrelation between the hardness and the duration is found for this subclass in contrast to the short and long groups.
If gamma ray bursts are highly collimated, the energy requirements of each event may be reduced by several (~ 4-6) orders of magnitude, and the event rate increased correspondingly. Extreme conditions in gamma ray bursters lead to highly relativistic motions (bulk Lorentz factors Gamma > 100). This results in strong forward beaming of the emitted radiation in the observer's rest frame. Thus, all information on gamma ray bursts comes from those ejecta emitted in a narrow cone (opening angle 1/Gamma) pointing towards the observer. Neither a flaring nor a quiescent counterpart to a gamma-ray burst has yet been convincingly identified at any wavelength region. The present status of the search for counterparts of classical gamma-ray bursts is given. Particular emphasis is put on the search for flaring counterparts, i.e. emission during or shortly after the gamma-ray emission.
Norris et al. (1994) report that the temporal structure of faint gamma ray bursts is longer than that of bright bursts, as expected for time dilation in the cosmological models of burst origin. I show that the observed trends can easily be produced by a burst luminosity function and thus may not result from cosmological effects. A cosmological signature may be present, but the tests Norris et al. present are not powerful enough to detect these signatures.
The spectrometer SPI is one of the main detectors of ESA's INTEGRAL mission. The instrument offers two interesting and valuable capabilities for the detection of the prompt emission of Gamma-ray bursts. Within a field of view of 16 degrees, SPI is able to localize Gamma-ray bursts with an accuracy of 10 arcmin. The large anticoincidence shield, ACS, consisting of 512 kg of BGO crystals, detects Gamma-ray bursts quasi omnidirectionally above ~70 keV. Taking into account the recent suggestion that a short gamma-ray burst (GRB) looks like the first 1 sec of a long GRB, we propose that the jet of a GRB consists of multiple sub-jets or sub-shells (i.e., an inhomogeneous jet model). The multiplicity of the sub-jets along a line of sight n_s is an important parameter. If n_s is large (>> 1) the event looks like a long GRB, while if n_s is small (~1) the event looks like a short GRB. We present a phenomenological model to explain the light curves of gamma-ray bursts. In the model a black hole is orbited by a precessing accretion disc which is fed by a neutron star. Gamma-rays are produced in a highly collimated beam via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. The gamma-ray beam sweeps through space due to the precession of the slaved accretion disc. The light curve expected from such a precessing luminosity cone can explain the complex temporal behavior of observed bright gamma-ray bursts.
In their recent paper, Campana et al. (2007) found that 5 bursts, among those detected by Swift, are outliers with respect to the E_peak-E_gamma ("Ghirlanda") correlation. We instead argue that they are not.

We present the results of population syntheses for binary stars carried out using the ``Scenario Machine'' code with the aim of analyzing events that may result in long gamma-ray bursts. We show that the observed distribution of morphological types of the host galaxies of long gamma-ray bursts can be explained in a model in which long gamma-ray bursts result from the core collapse of massive Wolf-Rayet stars in close binaries. The dependence of the burst rate on galaxy type is associated with an increase in the rate of stellar-wind mass-loss with increasing stellar metallicity. The separation …
We consider possible interpretations of the recently detected X- ray afterglow from the gamma-ray burst source GRB 970228. Cosmological and Galactic models of gamma-ray bursts predict different flux and spectral evolution of X-ray afterglows. We show that models based on adiabatic expansion of relativistic forward shocks require very efficient particle energization or post-burst re-acceleration during the expansion. Cooling neutron star models predict a very distinctive spectral and flux evolution that can be tested in current X-ray data.
Limitations on the multi-dimensional TeV-scale quantum gravity model by Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali (1998) and on model by Dvali, Gabadadze, Porrati (2000) are obtained from an analysis of gamma-ray bursts at cosmological distances (relativistic fireball model).
In 1997 the first optical afterglow of a cosmic Gamma-Ray Burst was discovered, and substantial progress has been achieved since then. Here we present a short review of some recent developments in this field, with emphasis on observational aspects of the GRB phenomenon.
We discuss a model for long Gamma-Ray-Bursts in which the central engine is associated with the conversion process of a metastable hadronic star into a star containing quark matter. We analyze the observational signatures of the model, i.e. the Supernova-GRB temporal connection and the existence of long quiescent times in the temporal structure of Gamma-Ray-Bursts.
We propose a possible unified model of short and long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), X-ray rich GRBs, and X-ray flashes. The jet of a GRB is assumed to consist of multiple sub-jets or sub-shells (i.e., an inhomogeneous jet model). The multiplicity of the sub-jets along a line of sight n_s is an important parameter. If n_s is large (>> 1) the event looks like a long GRB, while if n_s=1, the event looks like a short GRB. Finally, when n_s=0, the event looks like an X-ray flash or an X-ray rich GRB. Furthermore, our model may also explain the bimodal distributions of T_{90} duration of BATSE-GRBs.
I consider the effect of repeating gamma ray burst sources on the <V/Vmax> statistic. I find that the treatment of repeating events, if applied consistently, will not affect the effectiveness of <V/Vmax> as a test of burst homogeneity. The calculation of <V/Vmax> for apparent repeating and nonrepeating source populations will be biased by the incorrect classification of faint bursts. The current practice of calculating <V/Vmax> using all bursts is valid and consistent.
The relativistic outflows from gamma-ray bursts are now thought to be narrowly collimated into jets. After correcting for this jet geometry there is a remarkable constancy of both the energy radiated by the burst and the kinetic energy carried by the outflow. Gamma-ray bursts are still the most luminous explosions in the Universe, but they release energies that are comparable to supernovae. The diversity of cosmic explosions appears to be governed by the fraction of energy that is coupled to ultra-relativistic ejecta.
The redshift distribution of gamma-ray bursts collected in the BATSE Catalog is compared with the star formation rate. We aim to clarify the accordance between them. We also study the case of comoving number density of bursts monotonously increasing up to redshift 6-20. A method independent of the models of the gamma-ray bursts is used. The short and the long subgroups are studied separately. The redshift distribution of the long bursts may be proportional to the star formation rate. For the short bursts this can also happen, but the proportionality is less evident. For the long bursts the mon…
Gamma-ray burst sources with a high luminosity can produce electron-positron pair cascades in their environment as a result of back-scattering of a seed fraction of their original hard spectrum. The resulting spectral modifications offer the possibility of diagnosing not only the compactness parameter of the gamma-ray emitting region but also the baryonic density of the environment external to the burst.
The first well-localized short-duration gamma ray bursts (GRBs), GRB 050509b, GRB 050709 and GRB 050724, could have been the narrowly beamed initial spike of a burst/hyper flare of soft gamma ray repeaters (SGRs) in host galaxies at cosmological distances. Such bursts are expected if SGRs are young hyperstars, i.e. neutron stars where a considerable fraction of their neutrons have converted to hyperons and/or strange quark matter.
Many gamma-ray burst counterpart searches are being conducted in the optical-UV band. To both predict detectability and understand the meaning of any detections or upper limits, we extrapolate gamma-ray spectra from 54 bright gamma-ray bursts to optical-UV energies. We assume optical emission is concurrent with gamma-ray emission and do not consider quiescent or fading counterparts. We find that the spectrum must be steeper (greater flux at low energy) than a simple extrapolation of the gamma-ray spectrum for more than one simultaneous optical flash to be observable per year by current searche…
Gamma-ray bursts are the most luminous and probably the most relativistic events in the universe. The last few years have seen a tremendous increase in our knowledge of these events, but the source of the bursts still remains elusive. I will summarise recent progress in this field with special emphasis on our understanding of the possible progenitor systems.
We study positional coincidences between gamma-ray bursts in the BATSE 3B catalogue and quasars/AGN taken from the Veron-Cetty & Veron compilation. For most classes of AGN, for BL Lac objects and for radio-loud quasars, we find no excess coincidences above random expectation, and we give upper limits for their burst emission rate. However, surprising evidence is found for a positional correlation between gamma-ray bursts and radio-quiet quasars. A total of 134 selected bursts with a position error radius <1.8d and the nearest and intrinsically brightest radio-quiet quasars (M_v<-24.2 and z<1.0…
The origin of dark bursts - i.e. that have no observed afterglows in X-ray, optical/NIR and radio ranges - is unclear yet. Different possibilities - instrumental biases, very high redshifts, extinction in the host galaxies - are discussed and shown to be important. On the other hand, the dark bursts should not form a new subgroup of long gamma-ray bursts themselves.
I discuss in this paper the phenomenon of post-burst emission in BATSE gamma-ray bursts at energies traditionally associated with prompt emission. By summing the background-subtracted signals from hundreds of bursts, I find that tails out to hundreds of seconds after the trigger may be a common feature of long events (duration greater than 2s), and perhaps of the shorter bursts at a lower and shorter-lived level. A recent study has presented marginal statistical evidence that gamma-ray burst sources are correlated with Abell clusters, based on analyses of bursts in the BATSE 3B catalog. Using precise localization information from the 3rd Interplanetary Network, we have reanalyzed this possible correlation. We find that most of the Abell clusters which are in the relatively large 3B error circles are not in the much smaller IPN/BATSE error regions. We believe that this argues strongly against an Abell cluster-gamma-ray burst correlation.
The formation of supermassive black holes through the gravitational collapse of supermassive objects ($M \ga 10^4 M_\odot$) has been proposed as a source of cosmological gamma-ray bursts. The major advantage of this model is that such collapses are far more energetic than stellar-remnant mergers. The major drawback of this idea is the severe baryon loading problem in one-dimensional models.
