In this paper, a method via sparse-sparse iteration for computing a sparse incomplete factorization of the inverse of a symmetric positive definite matrix is proposed. The resulting factorized sparse approximate inverse is used as a preconditioner for solving symmetric positive definite linear systems of equations by using the preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm. Some numerical experiments on test matrices from the Harwell-Boeing collection for comparing the numerical performance of the presented method with one available well-known algorithm are also given.
We describe a second-order accurate approach to sparsifying the off-diagonal blocks in the hierarchical approximate factorizations of sparse symmetric positive definite matrices. The norm of the error made by the new approach depends quadratically, not linearly, on the error in the low-rank approximation of the given block. The analysis of the resulting two-level preconditioner shows that the preconditioner is second-order accurate as well. We incorporate the new approach into the recent Sparsified Nested Dissection algorithm [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 41 (2020), pp. 715-746], and test it on…
Many application problems that lead to solving linear systems make use of preconditioned Krylov subspace solvers to compute their solution. Among the most popular preconditioning approaches are incomplete factorization methods either as single-level approaches or within a multilevel framework. We will present a block incomplete factorization that is based on skillfully blocking the system initially and throughout the factorization. This approach allows for the use of cache-optimized dense matrix kernels such as level-3 BLAS or LAPACK. We will demonstrate how this block approach outperforms the…

SYM-ILDL is a numerical software package that computes incomplete $LDL^{T}$ (or `ILDL') factorizations of symmetric indefinite and real skew-symmetric matrices. The core of the algorithm is a Crout variant of incomplete LU (ILU), originally introduced and implemented for symmetric matrices by [Li and Saad, Crout versions of ILU factorization with pivoting for sparse symmetric matrices, Transactions on Numerical Analysis 20, pp. 75--85, 2005]. Our code is economical in terms of storage and it deals with real skew-symmetric matrices as well, in addition to symmetric ones. The package is written …
We introduce a software package called HIFIR for preconditioning sparse, unsymmetric, ill-conditioned, and potentially singular systems. HIFIR computes a hybrid incomplete factorization, which combines multilevel incomplete LU factorization with a truncated, rank-revealing QR factorization on the final Schur complement. This novel hybridization is based on the new theory of approximate generalized inverse and $ε$-accuracy. It enables near-optimal preconditioners for consistent systems and enables flexible GMRES to solve inconsistent systems when coupled with iterative refinement. In this paper…

We propose an unconditionally robust and highly effective preconditioner for general symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrices based on structured incomplete factorization (SIF), called enhanced SIF (eSIF) preconditioner. The original SIF strategy proposed recently derives a structured preconditioner by applying block diagonal preprocessing to the matrix and then compressing appropriate scaled off-diagonal blocks. Here, we use an enhanced scaling-and-compression strategy to design the new eSIF preconditioner. Some subtle modifications are made, such as the use of two-sided block triangular pr…
The problem of incomplete data - i.e., data with missing or unknown values - in multi-way arrays is ubiquitous in biomedical signal processing, network traffic analysis, bibliometrics, social network analysis, chemometrics, computer vision, communication networks, etc. We consider the problem of how to factorize data sets with missing values with the goal of capturing the underlying latent structure of the data and possibly reconstructing missing values (i.e., tensor completion). We focus on one of the most well-known tensor factorizations that captures multi-linear structure, CANDECOMP/PARAFA…
Pole Expansion and Selected Inversion (PEXSI) is an efficient scheme for evaluating selected entries of functions of large sparse matrices as required e.g. in electronic structure algorithms. We show that the triangular factorizations computed by the PEXSI scheme exhibit a localization property similar to that of matrix functions, and we present a modified PEXSI algorithm which exploits this observation to achieve linear scaling. To the best of our knowledge, the resulting incomplete PEXSI (iPEXSI) algorithm is the first linear-scaling algorithm which scales provably better than cubically even…
This note proposes an efficient preconditioner for solving linear and semi-linear parabolic equations. With the Crank-Nicholson time stepping method, the algebraic system of equations at each time step is solved with the conjugate gradient method, preconditioned with hierarchical interpolative factorization. Stiffness matrices arising in the discretization of parabolic equations typically have large condition numbers, and therefore preconditioning becomes essential, especially for large time steps. We propose to use the hierarchical interpolative factorization as the preconditioning for the co…
This paper presents a parallel preconditioning approach based on incomplete LU (ILU) factorizations in the framework of Domain Decomposition (DD) for general sparse linear systems. We focus on distributed memory parallel architectures, specifically, those that are equipped with graphic processing units (GPUs). In addition to block Jacobi, we present general purpose two-level ILU Schur complement-based approaches, where different strategies are presented to solve the coarse-level reduced system. These strategies are combined with modified ILU methods in the construction of the coarse-level oper…
Algorithms for studying transitions and instabilities in incompressible flows typically require the solution of linear systems with the full Jacobian matrix. Other popular approaches, like gradient-based design optimization and fully implicit time integration, also require very robust solvers for this type of linear system. We present a parallel fully coupled multilevel incomplete factorization preconditioner for the 3D stationary incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a structured grid. The algorithm and software are based on the robust two-level method developed by Wubs and Thies. In this…

Incomplete factorization is a widely used preconditioning technique for Krylov subspace methods for solving large-scale sparse linear systems. Its multilevel variants, such as ILUPACK, are more robust for many symmetric or unsymmetric linear systems than the traditional, single-level incomplete LU (or ILU) techniques. However, the previous multilevel ILU techniques still lacked robustness and efficiency for some large-scale saddle-point problems, which often arise from systems of partial differential equations (PDEs). We introduce HILUCSI, or Hierarchical Incomplete LU-Crout with Scalability-o…
Joint analysis of data from multiple sources has the potential to improve our understanding of the underlying structures in complex data sets. For instance, in restaurant recommendation systems, recommendations can be based on rating histories of customers. In addition to rating histories, customers' social networks (e.g., Facebook friendships) and restaurant categories information (e.g., Thai or Italian) can also be used to make better recommendations. The task of fusing data, however, is challenging since data sets can be incomplete and heterogeneous, i.e., data consist of both matrices, e.g…
This paper introduces an algorithm for the nonnegative matrix factorization-and-completion problem, which aims to find nonnegative low-rank matrices X and Y so that the product XY approximates a nonnegative data matrix M whose elements are partially known (to a certain accuracy). This problem aggregates two existing problems: (i) nonnegative matrix factorization where all entries of M are given, and (ii) low-rank matrix completion where nonnegativity is not required. By taking the advantages of both nonnegativity and low-rankness, one can generally obtain superior results than those of just us…
With the commercial availability of mixed precision hardware, mixed precision GMRES-based iterative refinement schemes have emerged as popular approaches for solving sparse linear systems. Existing analyses of these approaches, however, are based on using full LU factorizations to construct preconditioners for use within GMRES in each refinement step. In practical applications, inexact preconditioning techniques, such as incomplete LU or sparse approximate inverses, are often used for performance reasons. In this work, we investigate the use of sparse approximate inverse preconditioners based …
