In this article, we develop a classical electrodynamic theory to study the optical nonlinearities of metallic nanoparticles. The quasi-free electrons inside the metal are approximated as a classical Coulomb-interacting electron gas, and their motion under the excitation of an external electromagnetic field is described by the plasma equations. This theory is further tailored to study second-harmonic generation. Through detailed experiment-theory comparisons, we validate this classical theory as well as the associated numerical algorithm. It is demonstrated that our theory not only provides qualitative agreement with experiments, it also reproduces the overall strength of the experimentally observed second-harmonic signals.
In this work, we study second-harmonic generation a monocrystalline nanoparticle with a non-centrosymmetric crystalline lattice. It was shown that breaking the symmetry of the nanoparticle's shape can significantly affect the second harmonic radiation pattern. We propose a method for explaining and predicting the generated field for arbitrary nanoparticles and provide selection rules for nanoparticles with several different symmetries.
Here we demonstrate the gas sensing ability of cavity-coupled metallic nanoparticle systems, comprising gold nanoparticles separated from a gold mirror with a polymer spacer. An increase in relative humidity (RH) causes the spacer to expand, which induces a significant reduction of nanoparticle scattering intensity, as the scattering is highly dependent on the cavity-nanoparticle coupling that closely relates to the nanoparticle-mirror distance. This lithography-free structure enables a remarkable averaging sensitivity at 0.12 dB/% RH and 0.25 dB/% RH over RH range (45-75%), possessing an esti…
We have studied theoretically the exciton-plasmon coupling effects on the third-order optical nonlinearity of a coherently coupled hybrid system of a metal nanoparticle and a semiconductor quantum dot in the presence of a strong control field with a weak probe field.
Plasmonic resonances in metallic nanoparticles are exploited to create efficient optical filtering functions. A Finite Element Method is used to model metallic nanoparticles gratings. The accuracy of this method is shown by comparing numerical results with measurements on a two-dimensional grating of gold nanocylinders with elliptic cross section. Then a parametric analysis is performed in order to design efficient filters with polarization dependent properties together with high transparency over the visible range. The behavior of nanoparticle gratings is also modelled using the Maxwell-Garne…
We analyze nonlinear effects in optically driven arrays of nonlinear metallic nanoparticles. We demonstrate that such plasmonic systems are characterized by a bistable response, and they can support the propagation of dissipative switching waves (or plasmonic kinks) connecting the states with different polarization. We study numerically the properties of such plasmonic kinks which are characterized by a subwavelength extent and a tunable velocity.
We investigate the use of Bismuth Ferrite (BFO) nanoparticles for tumor tissue labelling in combination with infrared multi-photon excitation at 1250 nm. We report the efficient and simultaneous generation of second and third harmonic by the nanoparticles. On this basis, we set up a novel imaging protocol based on the co-localization of the two harmonic signals and demonstrate its benefits in terms of increased selectivity against endogenous background sources in tissue samples. Finally, we discuss the use of BFO nanoparticles as mapping reference structures for correlative light-electron micr…
The resonance effects on the optical second harmonic generation from 140 nm silver nanoparticles is studied experimentally by hyper-Rayleigh scattering and numerically by finite element method calculations. We find that the interferences between the broad dipolar and narrow octupolar surface plasmon resonances leads to nonlinear Fano profiles that can be externally controlled by the incident polarization angle. These profiles are responsible for the nonlinear plasmon-induced transparency in the second harmonic generation.
It is well known that Raman scattering and fluorescence can be enhanced by the presence of metallic nanoparticles. Here, we derive simple equations to analyse the influence of metallic nanoparticles on upconversion processes such as non-radiative energy transfer or excited state absorption. We compare the resulting expressions with the more familiar Raman and fluorescence cases, and find significant differences. We use numerical simulations to calculate the upconverted signal enhancement achievable by means of metallic spheres of different radii, and find particles of 100-400nm radius at infra…
We employ structured light for the second-harmonic generation from subwavelength AlGaAs nanoparticles that support both electric and magnetic multipolar Mie resonances. The vectorial structure of the pump beam allows addressing selectively Mie-resonant modes and control the strength of the generated nonlinear fields. We observe experimentally the enhancement of the second-harmonic generation for the azimuthally polarized vector beams near magnetic dipole resonance, and match our observations with the numerical decomposion of the Mie-type multipoles for the fundamental and generated second-harm…
A classic harmonic oscillator model is developed to investigate the optical properties of coupled metal nanoparticles (MNPs) with arbitrary configuration in plane. The coupling coefficients are derived from classical electrodynamics. Using this model, we can easily obtain the spectra of coupled MNPs varying with the configurations of the system and the polarizations of external light. Furthermore, the far field electric field distributions of different configurations are revealed. This model is an extension of our previous works which only discuss the parallel and vertical excitations for dime…
The second-harmonic generation of 150 nm spherical gold nanoparticles is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. We demonstrate that the interference effects between dipolar and octupolar plasmons can be used as a fingerprint to discriminate the local surface and non-local bulk contributions to the second-harmonic generation. By fitting the experimental data with the electric fields computed with finite-element method (FEM) simulations, the Rudnick and Stern parameters weighting the relative nonlinear sources efficiencies are evaluated and the validity of the hydrodynamic model and…
We develop a multipolar theory of second-harmonic generation (SHG) by dielectric nanoparticles made of noncentrosymmetric materials with bulk quadratic nonlinearity. We specifically analyze two regimes of optical excitation: illumination by a plane wave and single-mode excitation, when the laser pump drives the magnetic dipole mode only. Considering two classes of nonlinear crystalline solids (dielectric perovskite material and III-V semiconductor), we apply a symmetry approach to derive selection rules for the multipolar composition of the nonlinear radiation. The developed description can be…
We demonstrate the simultaneous generation of second, third, and fourth harmonic from a single dielectric Bismuth Ferrite nanoparticle excited by a telecom fiber laser at 1560 nm. We first characterize the signals associated with different nonlinear orders in terms of spectrum, excitation intensity dependence, and relative signal strengths. Successively, on the basis of the polarization-resolved emission curves of the three harmonics, we discuss the interplay of susceptibility tensor components at the different orders and we show how polarization can be used as an optical handle to control the…
By combining analytical and numerical approaches, we study resonantly enhanced second-harmonic generation (SHG) by individual high-index dielectric nanoparticles made of centrosymmetric materials. Considering both bulk and surface nonlinearities, we describe second-harmonic nonlinear scattering from a silicon nanoparticle optically excited in the vicinity of the magnetic and electric dipolar resonances. We discuss the contributions of different nonlinear sources, and the effect of the low-order optical Mie modes on the characteristics of the generated far-field. We demonstrate that the multipo…
We study surface second-harmonic generation (SHG) from a singular plasmonic structure consisting of touching metallic wires. We use the technique of transformation optics and relate the structure to a rather simpler geometry, a slab waveguide. This allows us to obtain an analytical solution to the problem, revealing rich physical insights. We identify various conditions that govern the SHG efficiency. Importantly, our analysis demonstrates that apart from the mode-matching condition, phase-matching condition is relevant even for this sub-wavelength structure. Furthermore, we identify a geometr…
Out-of-plane lattice plasmons (OLPs) supported by metallic nanoparticle arrays are promising for diverse applications due to their remarkably narrow linewidths and significant enhancement of local fields. Here we investigate the necessary conditions for metallic nanoparticle arrays to achieve OLPs. Our results show that, besides the prerequisites of large height, oblique incidence, and TM polarization, which have been pointed out by the literature; the array period should be properly designed within a limited range, the dielectric environment should be homogeneous, and the height and the angle…
We present a multimer coupling classic harmonic oscillator model to reveal the scattering and photoluminescence (PL) properties of metallic nanoparticle chains. Taking particle number from 1 to 6 as examples, we compare the calculated spectra with the experimental ones from other researchers' work, and they agree well with each other. Furthermore, scattering and PL properties are analyzed carefully varying with particle number $n$, coupling strength $g$ and effective free electron number $N$. Results indicates larger red-shift and smaller full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the scattering spe…
Periodic arrays of noble metal nanoparticles are emblematic nanostructures in photonics. Their ability to sustain localized surface plasmon resonances has been used throughout the years to demonstrate a variety of passive and active functionalities such as enhanced luminescence in dipolar media and LEDs as well as higher responsivities in photoconductive detectors. Here, we show that additional magnetic resonances, associated with inductive current loops between the nanoparticles and accessible with transverse electric waves, emerge in the limit of dense arrays with subwavelength periods. More…
We have investigated the unique effects of metallic nanoparticle on the ring resonator, especially multiple Au nanoparticles on the micro ring resonator with the 4-port configuration on chip. For the Au nanoparticle, because it has smaller real refractive index than air and large absorption refractive index, we found that there is a blue shift for the ring resonance wavelength, instead of red shift normally observed for dielectric nanoparticles. The drop port intensity is strongly dependent on both number and size of nanoparticles, while relatively independent on position of nanoparticles. The…
Absorption efficiency profiles and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelengths are reported for metallic core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) placed over a BK7 glass substrate. A numerical study is performed with the vectorized version of the discrete dipole approximation with surface interactions (DDA-SI-v). Gold (Au) and silver (Ag) metallic components are used for the simulations of two different core-shell structures. Absorption enhancement and the hybrid modes of plasmon resonances of the core-shell structures are compared by using a measure that defines a size configuration. It is o…
We investigate optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) from metasurfaces where noncentrosymmetric V-shaped gold nanoparticles are ordered into regular array configurations. In contrast to expectations, a substantial enhancement of the SHG signal is observed when the number density of the particles in the array is reduced. More specifically, by halving the number density, we obtain over five-fold enhancement in SHG intensity. This striking result is attributed to favorable interparticle interactions mediated by the lattice, where surface-lattice resonances lead to spectral narrowing of the pla…
We investigated theoretically the exciton-plasmon coupling effects on the population dynamics and the absorption properties of a hybrid nanosystem composed of a metal nanoparticle (MNP) and a V-type three level semiconductor quantum dot (SQD), which are created by the interaction with the induced dipole moments in the SQD and the MNP, respectively. Excitons of the SQD and the plasmons of the MNP in such a hybrid nanosystem could be coupled strongly or weakly to demonstrate novel properties of the hybrid system. Our results show that the nonlinear optical response of the hybrid nanosystem can b…
Optical nonlinearities of matter are often associated with the response of individual atoms. Here, using a toy oscillator model, we show that in the confined geometry of a two-dimensional dielectric nanoparticle a collective nonlinear response of the atomic array can arise from the Coulomb interactions of the bound optical electrons, even if the individual atoms exhibit no nonlinearity. We determine the multipole contributions to the nonlinear response of nanoparticles and demonstrate that the odd order and even order nonlinear electric dipole moments scale with the area and perimeter of the n…
We consider a simple cubic array of metallic nanoparticles supporting extended collective plasmons that arise from the near-field dipolar interaction between localized surface plasmons in each nanoparticle. We develop a fully analytical quantum theory of the strong-coupling regime between these collective plasmons and photons resulting in plasmon polaritons in the nanoparticle array. Remarkably, we show that the polaritonic band gap and the dielectric function of the metamaterial can be significantly modulated by the polarization of light. We unveil how such an anisotropic behavior in the plas…
Enhanced optical absorption of molecules in the vicinity of metallic nanostructures is key to a number of surface-enhanced spectroscopies and of great general interest to the fields of plasmonics and nano-optics. Yet, experimental access to this absorbance has long proven elusive. We here present direct measurements of the intrinsic absorbance of dye-molecules adsorbed onto silver nanospheres, and crucially, at sub-monolayer concentrations where dye--dye interactions become negligible. With a large detuning from the plasmon resonance, distinct shifts and broadening of the molecular resonances …
In this letter, we study the radiative heat transfer between two nanoparticles in the near field and in the far field. We find that the heat transfer is dominated by the electric dipole-dipole interaction for dielectric particles and by the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction for metallic nanoparticles. We introduce polarizabilities formulas valid for arbitrary values of the skin depth. While the heat transfer mechanism is different for metallic and dielectric nanoparticles, we show that the distance dependence is the same. However, the dependence of the heat flux on the particle radius is diff…
The optical properties of metallic tin nanoparticles embedded in silicon-based host materials were studied. Thin films containing the nanoparticles were produced using RF magnetron sputtering followed by ex situ heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy was used to determine the nanoparticle shape and size distribution; spherical, metallic tin nanoparticles were always found. The presence of a localized surface plasmon resonance in the nanoparticles was observed when SiO2 and amorphous silicon were the host materials. Optical spectroscopy revealed that the localized surface plasmon reso…
Here, we study the possibility of selective high-harmonic generation (HHG) based on the concept of charge transfer plasmons (CTP) in bridged nanoparticle assemblies. By choosing plasmonic dimer nanoantenna, as a fundamental member of nanoclusters family, and bridging the gap space between the proximal nanoparticles with an optothermally controllable substance, we selectively produced two different harmonics at different states of the functional bridge. To this end, the conductive connection between the nanoparticles is mediated with Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), which inherently has opposite optical and el…
Photon-number statistics of the emitted photons from a quantum dot placed in the vicinity of a metallic nanoparticle (with either shell or solid-sphere geometry) in the non-Markovian regime is investigated theoretically. In the model scheme, the quantum dot is considered as a InAs three- level system in Lambda-type configuration with two transition channels. One of channels is driven by a polarized classical field while the two channels are coupled to the plasmon modes. Plasmon resonance modes of a nanoshell, in contrast of a nanosphere, are tunable at demand frequency by controlling the thick…
We show that dielectric spheres can be cloaked by a shell of amorphously arranged metallic nanoparticles. The shell represents an artificial medium with tunable effective properties that can be adjusted such that the scattered signals of shell and sphere almost cancel each other. We provide an analytical model for the cloak design and prove numerically that the cloak operates as desired. We show that more than 70% of the scattered signal of the sphere can be suppressed at the design wavelength. Advantages and disadvantages of such a cloak when compared to other implementations are disclosed.
We performed a visualization of membrane proteins labeled with 10-nm gold nanoparticles in cells, using an all-optical method based on photothermal interference contrast. The high sensitivity of the method and the stability of the signals allows 3D imaging of individual nanoparticles without the drawbacks of photobleaching and blinking inherent to fluorescent markers. A simple analytical model is derived to account for the measurements of the signal amplitude and the spatial resolution. The photothermal interference contrast method provides an efficient, reproducible, and promising way to visu…
The theory of the ultrashort laser pulse scattered by metallic nanoparticles in the region of surface plasmon resonances is developed in the framework of kinetic approach. For the spheroidal particles, the dependence of the light scattering cross-section on the shape of the particles, the carrier wave frequency, a pulse duration, and other factors is studied. Additionally, an interaction of small metallic particles with double ultrashort pulse is considered. In this case, the energy scattered by the particles demonstrates oscillating behavior when the time delay between pulses changes. Special…
Anderson localization has been observed in various types of waves, such as matter waves, optical waves and acoustic waves. Here we reveal that the effect of Anderson localization can be also induced in metallic nonlinear nanoparticle arrays excited by a random electrically driving field. We find that the dipole-induced nonlinearity results in ballistic expansion of dipole intensity during evolution; while the randomness of the external driving field can suppress such an expansion. Increasing the strength of randomness above the threshold value, a localized pattern of dipole intensity can be ge…
Metals are highly opaque, yet we show that densely packed arrays of metallic nanoparticles can be more transparent to infrared radiation than dielectrics such as germanium, even for arrays that are over 75% metal by volume. Despite strong interactions between the metallic particles, these arrays form effective dielectrics that are virtually dispersion-free, making possible the design of optical components that are achromatic over ultra-broadband ranges of wavelengths from a few microns up to millimetres or more. Furthermore, the local refractive indices may be tuned by altering the size, shape…
We analytically investigate the effect of a non-centrosymmetric geometry in the optical second harmonic (SH) generation from a particle made of a centrosymmetric material, in the interior of which quadratic optical processes are suppressed. We consider a cylindrical particle with a cross-section that is slightly deformed away from a circle and with a radius much smaller than the wavelength. We calculate the induced linear and nonlinear fields perturbatively in terms of the deformation parameter and obtain the nonlinear dipolar and quadrupolar hyperpolarizabilities, whose spectra we evaluate fo…
We theoretically investigate plasmon polaritons in cubic lattices of spherical metallic nanoparticles. The nanoparticles, each supporting triply-degenerate localized surface plasmons, couple through the Coulomb dipole-dipole interaction, giving rise to collective plasmons that extend over the whole metamaterial. The latter hybridize with photons forming plasmon polaritons, which are the hybrid light-matter eigenmodes of the system. We derive general analytical expressions to evaluate both plasmon and plasmon-polariton dispersions, and the corresponding eigenstates. These are obtained within a …
We present the theoretical and detailed experimental characterizations of Photothermal Heterodyne Imaging. An analytical expression of the photothermal heterodyne signal is derived using the theory of light scattering from a fluctuating medium. The amplitudes of the signals detected in the backward and forward configurations are compared and their frequency dependences are studied. The application of the Photothermal Heterodyne detection technique to the absorption spectroscopy of individual gold nanoparticles is discussed and the detection of small individual silver nanoparticles is demonstra…
The enhanced electric field at plasmonic resonances in nanoscale antennas can lead to efficient harmonic generation, especially when the plasmonic geometry is asymmetric on either inter-particle or intra-particle levels. The planar Archimedean nanospiral offers a unique geometrical asymmetry for second-harmonic generation (SHG) because the SHG results neither from arranging centrosymmetric nanoparticles in asymmetric groupings, nor from non-centrosymmetric nanoparticles that retain a local axis of symmetry. Here we report forward SHG from planar arrays of Archimedean nanospirals using 15 fs pu…
Plasmonics enables deep-subwavelength concentration of light and has become important for fundamental studies as well as real-life applications. Two major existing platforms of plasmonics are metallic nanoparticles and metallic films. Metallic nanoparticles allow efficient coupling to far field radiation, yet their synthesis typically leads to poor material quality. Metallic films offer substantially higher quality materials, but their coupling to radiation is typically jeopardized due to the large momentum mismatch with free space. Here, we propose and theoretically investigate optically thin…
A general metallic mirror (i.e., a flat metallic surface) has been a popular optical component that can contribute broadband light absorption to thin-film optoelectronic devices; nonetheless, such electric mirror with a reversal of reflection phase inevitably causes the problem of minimized electric field near at the mirror surface (maximized electric field at one quarter of wavelength from mirror). This problem becomes more elucidated, when the deep-subwavelength-scaled two-dimensional (2D) material (e.g., graphene and molybdenum disulfide) is implemented into optoelectronic device as an acti…
Second harmonic (SH) radiation in metal nanoparticles is generated by both nonlocal-bulk and local-surface SH sources, induced by the electromagnetic field at the fundamental frequency. We propose a surface integral equation (SIE) method for evaluating the SH radiation generated by metal nanoparticles with arbitrary shapes, considering all SH sources. We demonstrate that the contribution of the nonlocal-bulk SH sources to the SH electromagnetic field can be taken into account through equivalent surface electric and magnetic currents. We numerically solve the SIE problem by using the Galerkin m…
Conjugated metallic nanoparticles are a promising means to achieve ultrasensitive and multiplexed sensing in intact three-dimensional samples, especially for biological applications, via surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We show that enhancement and extinction are linked and compete in a collection of metallic nanoparticles. Counterintuitively, the Raman signal vanishes when nanoparticles are excited at their plasmon resonance, while increasing nanoparticle concentrations at off-resonance excitation sometimes leads to decreased signal. We develop an effective medium theory that explain…
We develop a quantum theory of plasmon polaritons in chains of metallic nanoparticles, describing both near- and far-field interparticle distances, by including plasmon-photon Umklapp processes. Taking into account the retardation effects of the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between the nanoparticles, which are induced by the coupling of the plasmonic degrees of freedom to the photonic continuum, we reveal the polaritonic nature of the normal modes of the system. We compute the dispersion relation and radiative linewidth, as well as the group velocities of the eigenmodes, and compare ou…
We investigate the collective plasmonic modes in a chain of metallic nanoparticles that are coupled by near-field interactions. The size- and momentum-dependent nonradiative Landau damping and radiative decay rates are calculated analytically within an open quantum system approach. These decay rates determine the excitation propagation along the chain. In particular, the behavior of the radiative decay rate as a function of the plasmon wavelength leads to a transition from an exponential decay of the collective excitation for short distances to an algebraic decay for large distances. Important…
Self-focusing of laser beam propagating through a dissipative suspension of metallic nanoparticles is studied. Impact of imaginary part of nanoparticle polarizability on the optical force and consequently on the particles rearrangement in the presence of laser fields with an initial Gaussian profile is considered. It is shown that considering absorption of wave, leads to the creation of optical force along the wave travelling direction which can cause longitudinal distribution of nanoparticles density. Considering fifth order nonlinearity of wave amplitude that comes from simultaneous consider…
While plasmonic particles can provide optical resonances in a wide spectral range from the lower visible up to the near-infrared, often symmetry effects are utilized to obtain particular optical responses. By breaking certain spatial symmetries, chiral structures arise and provide robust chiroptical responses to these plasmonic resonances. Here, we observe strong chiroptical responses in the linear and nonlinear optical regime for chiral L-handed helicoid III nanoparticles and quantify them by means of an asymmetric factor, the so-called g-factor. We calculate the linear-optical g-factors for …
Localized electromagnetic modes and negligible Ohmic losses dictate the growing interest in subwavelength all-dielectric nanoparticles. Although an exhaustive volume of study dealt with interaction of all-dielectric nanostructures with free-space electromagnetic fields, their performance as integrated photonics elements remains untackled. We present an experimental study of optical coupling between a resonant subwavelength silicon nanodisk and a non-resonant silicon waveguide, as probed by third harmonic generation microscopy. By placing the nanodisks at different distances from the waveguide,…
We propose and evaluate a new type of optical force microscope based on a standing wave optical trap. Our microscope, calibrated in-situ and operating in a dynamic mode, is able to trap, without heating, a single metallic nanoparticle of 150 nm that acts as a highly sensitive probe for external radiation pressure. An Allan deviation-based stability analysis of the setup yields an optimal 0.1 Hz measurement bandwidth over which the microscope is thermally limited. Over this bandwidth, and with a genuine sine-wave external drive, we demonstrate an optical force resolution down to 3 fN in water a…
Whispering-gallery mode resonators host multiple trapped narrowband circulating optical resonances that find applications in quantum electrodynamics, optomechanics, and sensing. However, the spherical symmetry and low field leakage of dielectric microspheres make it difficult to probe their high-quality optical modes using far-field radiation. Even so, local field enhancement from metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) coupled to the resonators can interface the optical far-field and the bounded cavity modes. In this work, we study the interaction between whispering-gallery modes and MNP surface plasmo…
We consider a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice of metallic nanoparticles, each supporting a localized surface plasmon, and study the quantum properties of the collective plasmons resulting from the near field dipolar interaction between the nanoparticles. We analytically investigate the dispersion, the effective Hamiltonian and the eigenstates of the collective plasmons for an arbitrary orientation of the individual dipole moments. When the polarization points close to the normal to the plane the spectrum presents Dirac cones, similar to those present in the electronic band structure of graph…
The authors of preprint arXiv:1810.00565 and paper in Light: Science & Applications (2019), Y. Dubi and Y. Sivan, made several wrong and inconsistent comments on several of our papers. In addition, the paper in Faraday Discuss. 214, 215-233 (2018) by the same authors also contains several wrong statements in relationship with our work. Moreover, the authors address in their comments features that were in fact not present in our work. In what follows we present correction to a number of specific points in which they either misrepresented or erroneously interpreted our published work.
We study a bipartite linear chain constituted by spherical metallic nanoparticles, where each nanoparticle supports a localized surface plasmon. The near-field dipolar interaction between the localized surface plasmons gives rise to collective plasmons, which are extended over the whole nanoparticle array. We derive analytically the spectrum and the eigenstates of the collective plasmonic excitations. At the edge of the Brillouin zone, the spectrum is of a pseudorelativistic nature similar to that present in the electronic band structure of polyacetylene. We find the effective Dirac Hamiltonia…
Micro-nanoparticle systems have wide applications in thermal science and technology. In dense particulate system, the particle separation distance may be less than the characteristic thermal wavelength and near field effect will be significant and become a key factor to influence thermal radiation transfer in the system. In this study, radiative heat transfer (RHT) between two metallic nanoparticles clusters are explored using many-body radiative heat transfer theory implemented with the coupled electric and magnetic dipole (CEMD) approach, which effectively takes into account the contribution…
We study theoretically "graphene-like" plasmonic metamaterials constituted by two-dimensional arrays of metallic nanoparticles, including perfect honeycomb structures with and without inversion symmetry, as well as generic bipartite lattices. The dipolar interactions between localised surface plasmons in different nanoparticles gives rise to collective plasmons that extend over the whole lattice. We study the band structure of collective plasmons and unveil its tunability with the orientation of the dipole moments associated with the localised surface plasmons. Depending on the dipole orientat…
The theory for the electric and magnetic fields energy absorption by small metallic particles subjected to the irradiation by ultrashort laser pulses of different duration in the region of surface plasmon excitation is developed. For the particles of the oblate or prolate spheroidal shape there has been found the dependence of the absorbed energy on a number of factors, including a particle radius, a degree of the shape deviation from a spherical one, a pulse duration, the orientation of the magnetic field upon particle, the magnitude of carrier frequency, and the value of a shift of the carri…
