The spin-gap system with a bond-disorder (CH3)2CHNH3-Cu(ClxBr1-x)3 is reported by experiments on macroscopic quantities of the uniform susceptibility and the specific heat to show a magnetic order at low temperatures when the value of x is within the limited region between 0.44 and 0.87, and otherwise a gapped behavior. We have investigated microscopically the ground state of the sample with x=0.35 by muon spin relaxation (mSR) to observe that the frequency spectrum of the spin fluctuation tends to concentrate around zero energy as lowering temperatures. This behavior was interpreted as the soft-mode toward the possible magnetic phase transition at absolute zero.
We explore how disorder and interactions conspire in lattice models with sequentially activated hopping to produce novel k-body (or many-body) localized phases. Specifically, we show that when disorder is added to the set of interacting floquet models considered in [Wampler and Klich arXiv:2209.09180], regions in parameter space near the special points where classical-like dynamics emerge are stabilized prethermally (or via many-body localization in some cases) producing new families of interesting phases. We also find that this disordered system exhibits novel phases in regions of parameter s…
The $S=1/2$ Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention as an exactly solvable example with a quantum spin liquid ground state. In a properly oriented external magnetic field, chiral Majorana edge modes associated with a quantized thermal Hall conductance emerge, and a distinct spin-disordered phase appears at intermediate field strengths, below the polarized phase. However, since material realizations of Kitaev magnetism invariably display competing exchange interactions, the stability of these exotic phases with respect to additional couplings is a key issue. Here, we report a…
A number of topological nodes including Dirac, quadratic and triple band touching points as well as a pair of degenerate Dirac line nodes are found to emerge in the triplet plaquette excitations of the frustrated spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg honeycomb model when the ground state of the system lies in a spin-disordered plaquette-valence-bond-solid phase. A six-spin plaquette operator theory of this honeycomb model has been developed for this purpose by using the eigenstates of an isolated Heisenberg hexagonal plaquette. Spin-1/2 operators are thus expressed in the Fock spac…
Quantum fluctuations originating phase competition or geometrical frustration of spins lead to novel states such as a quantum critical point and a quantum spin liquid where the strong quantum fluctuations suppress any ordered states even at 0 K. Utilizing site-selective NMR for a quasi-two dimensional organic conductor $λ$-(STF)$_2$GaCl$_4$, we investigate the non-magnetic insulating phase of the stripe lattice system consisting of triangular and square tilings. We found development of AF spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature. Regardless of large enhancement of spin-lattice relaxation …
Fractionalized excitations develop in many unusual many-body states such as quantum spin liquids, disordered phases that cannot be described using any local order parameter. Because these exotic excitations correspond to emergent degrees of freedom, how to probe them and establish their existence is a long-standing challenge. We present a general procedure to reveal the fractionalized excitations using real-space entanglement entropy in critical spin liquids that are particularly relevant to experiments. Moreover, we show how to use the entanglement entropy to construct the corresponding spino…
The quantum critical regime (QCR) of a two-dimensional (2D) disordered and a 2D clean dimerized spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg models are studied using the first principles nonperturbative quantum Monte Carlo simulations (QMC). In particular, the three well-known universal coefficients associated with QCR are investigated in detail. While in our investigation we find the obtained results are consistent with the related analytic predictions, non-negligible finite temperature ($T$) effects are observed. Such an influence from $T$ on the properties of the considered spin systems related to QCR has…
We study the effects of a random magnetic field on a one-dimensional (1D) spin-1 chain with {\it correlated} nearest-neighbor $XY$ interaction. We show that this spin model can be exactly mapped onto the 1D disordered tight-binding model of ${\mathbb Z}_3$ Fock parafermions (FPFs), exotic anyonic quasiparticles that generalize usual spinless fermions. Thus, we have a peculiar case of a disordered Hamiltonian that, despite being bilinear in the creation and annihilation operators, exhibits a many-body localization (MBL) transition owing to the nontrivial statistics of FPFs. This is in sharp con…
Spin-orbit coupled honeycomb magnets with the Kitaev interaction have received a lot of attention due to their potential of hosting exotic quantum states including quantum spin liquids. Thus far, the most studied Kitaev systems are 4d/5d-based honeycomb magnets. Recent theoretical studies predicted that 3d-based honeycomb magnets, including Na2Co2TeO6 (NCTO), could also be a potential Kitaev system. Here, we have used a combination of heat capacity, magnetization, electron spin resonance measurements alongside inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study NCTO's quantum magnetism, and we have fo…
Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are exotic phases of matter exhibiting long-range entanglement and supporting emergent gauge fields. A vigorous search for experimental realizations of these states has identified several materials with properties hinting at QSL physics. A key issue in understanding these QSL candidates is often the interplay of weak disorder of the crystal structure with the spin liquid state. It has recently been pointed out that in at least one important class of candidate QSLs - pyrochlore magnets based on non-Kramers ions such as Pr$^{3+}$ or Tb$^{3+}$- structural disorder can …
The interplay between the Fermi sea anisotropy, electron-electron interaction, and localization phenomena can give rise to exotic many-body phases. An exciting example is an anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) Wigner solid (WS), where electrons form an ordered array with an anisotropic lattice structure. Such a state has eluded experiments up to now as its realization is extremely demanding: First, a WS entails very low densities where the Coulomb interaction dominates over the kinetic (Fermi) energy. Attaining such low densities while keeping the disorder low is very challenging. Second, the low…

Spin liquids are exotic phases of matter that often support emergent gauge fields and quasi-particle excitations. While spin liquids are commonly known for remaining disordered, their definition has been extended to include phases with broken symmetry corresponding to (partial) long-range order, such as chiral and nematic spin liquids for example. For Coulomb spin liquids, this ordering can be quantitatively understood via a Helmholtz decomposition between divergence-free and divergence-full terms. This phenomenon has been coined fragmentation, where spin degrees of freedom fragment into two c…
Square-net-layered materials have attracted attention as an extended research platform of Dirac fermions and of exotic magneto-transport phenomena. In this study, we investigated the magneto-transport properties of LaAgSb$_2$, which has Sb-square-net layers and shows charge density wave (CDW) transitions at ambient pressure. The application of pressure suppresses the CDWs, and above a pressure of 3.2 GPa, a disordered phase with no CDWs is realized. By utilizing a mechanical rotator combined with a high-pressure cell, we observed the angular dependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillatio…
The interplay of disorder and interactions is a challenging topic of condensed matter physics, where correlations are crucial and exotic phases develop. In one spatial dimension, a particularly successful method to analyze such problems is the strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG). This method, which is asymptotically exact in the limit of large disorder, has been successfully employed in the study of several phases of random magnetic chains. Here we develop an SDRG scheme capable to provide in-depth information on a large class of strongly disordered one-dimensional magnetic chains wit…
Quantum Monte Carlo simulations reveal an exotic metallic phase with a single-particle gap but gapless spin and charge excitations and a nonsaturating resistivity in a two-dimensional SU(2) Falicov-Kimball model. An exact duality between this model and an unconstrained slave-spin theory leads to a classification of the phase as a fractionalized or orthogonal metal whose low-energy excitations have different quantum numbers than the original electrons. Whereas the fractionalized metal corresponds to the regime of disordered slave spins, the regime of ordered slave spins is a Fermi liquid. At a …
A Majorana fermion is a fermionic particle that is its own antiparticle. Since the theoretical discovery in 1937, the exotic particle has long been searched in particle physics. In the last few decades, however, it has attracted renewed interest in condensed matter physics, where it can be realized as an elementary excitation (quasiparticle) in quantum states of matter. In this review, we discuss another platform for Majorana fermions, the quantum spin liquid, in which interacting magnetic moments remain disordered down to the lowest temperature under strong quantum fluctuations. They are char…
Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) define an exotic class of quantum ground states where spins are disordered down to zero temperature. We propose routes to QSLs in kagome optical lattices using applied flux. An optical flux lattice can be applied to induce a uniform flux and chiral three-spin interactions that drive the formation of a gapped chiral spin liquid. A different approach based on recent experiments using laser-assisted tunneling and lattice tilt implements a staggered flux pattern which can drive a gapless spin liquid with symmetry protected nodal lines. Our proposals, therefore, establis…
Establishing the physical mechanism governing exchange interactions is fundamental for exploring exotic phases such as the quantum spin liquids (QSLs) in real materials. In this work, we address exchange interactions in Sr2CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$O, a series of double perovskites that realize the spin-1/2 square lattice and were suggested to harbor a QSL ground state arising from random distribution of non-magnetic ions. Our {\it ab initio} multi-reference configuration interaction calculations show that replacing Te atoms with W atoms changes the dominant couplings from nearest to next-nearest nei…
We report the synthesis and characterization of a new quantum magnet [2-[Bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)aminomethyl]pyridine]Ni(II)-trimer (BHAP-Ni3) in single-crystalline form. Our combined experimental and theoretical investigations reveal an exotic spin state that stabilizes a robust 2/3 magnetization plateau between 7 and 20 T in an external magnetic field. AC-susceptibility measurements show the absence of any magnetic order/glassy state down to 60 mK. The magnetic ground state is disordered and specific-heat measurements reveal the gapped nature of the spin excitations. Most interestingly, our theo…
Artificial spin ices are frustrated spin systems that can be engineered, wherein fine tuning of geometry and topology has allowed the design and characterization of exotic emergent phenomena at the constituent level. Here we report a realization of spin ice in a lattice of superconducting qubits. Unlike conventional artificial spin ice, our system is disordered by both quantum and thermal fluctuations. The ground state is classically described by the ice rule, and we achieve control over a fragile degeneracy point leading to a Coulomb phase. The ability to pin individual spins allows us to dem…
Two-dimensional magnetic insulators exhibit a plethora of competing ground states, such as ordered (anti)ferromagnets, exotic quantum spin liquid states with topological order and anyonic excitations, and random singlet phases emerging in highly disordered frustrated magnets. Here we show how single spin qubits, which interact directly with the low-energy excitations of magnetic insulators, can be used as a diagnostic of magnetic ground states. Experimentally tunable parameters, such as qubit level splitting, sample temperature, and qubit-sample distance, can be used to measure spin correlatio…
