This article surveys recent progress of results in topology and dynamics based on techniques of closed one-forms. Our approach allows us to draw conclusions about properties of flows by studying homotopical and cohomological features of manifolds. More specifically we describe a Lusternik - Schnirelmann type theory for closed one-forms, the focusing effect for flows and the theory of Lyapunov one-forms. We also discuss recent results about cohomological treatment of the invariants cat(X, ξ) and cat^1(X, ξ) and their explicit computation in certain examples.
To open-closed cobordism surfaces, open-closed string topology associates topological quantum field theory (TQFT) operations, namely string operations, which depend only on homeomorphism types of surfaces and which satisfy the sewing property. We show that most TQFT string operations vanish in open-closed string topology. We describe those open-closed cobordisms with vanishing string operations, and give a short list of open-closed cobordisms with possibly nontrivial string operations.
In this article we describe relations of the topology of closed 1-forms to the group theoretic invariants of Bieri-Neumann-Strebel-Renz. Starting with a survey, we extend these Sigma invariants to finite CW- complexes and show that many properties of the group theoretic version have analogous statements. In particular we show the relation between Sigma invariants and finiteness properties of certain infinite covering spaces. We also discuss applications of these invariants to the Lusternik- Schnirelmann category of a closed 1-form and to the existence of a non- singular closed 1-form in a give…
Given a smooth closed manifold M with a family {L_i} of closed submanifolds, we consider the free loop space LM and the spaces PM(L_i,L_j) of open strings (paths g:[0,1]->M with g(0) in L_i, and g(1) in L_j). We construct string topology operations resulting in an open-closed TQFT on the family (h_*(LM),h_*(PM(L_i,L_j)) which extends the known string topology TQFT on h_*(LM). Here, h_* is a multiplicative generalized homology theory supporting orientations for M and the L_i. To construct the operations, we introduce the notion of open-closed fat graph, generalizing fat graphs to the open-close…
In this paper we study the topology of the cobordism category of open and closed strings. This is a 2-category in which the objects are compact one-manifolds whose boundary components are labeled by an indexing set (the set of "D-branes"), the 1-morphisms are cobordisms of manifolds with boundary, and the 2-morphisms are diffeomorphisms of the surface cobordisms. Our methods and techniques are direct generalizations of those used by U. Tillmann in her study of the category of closed strings. We input the striking theorem of Madsen and Weiss regarding the topology of the stable mapping class gr…
In this paper we extend our correlation functions to the open/closed case. This gives rise to actions of an open/closed version of the Sullivan PROP as well as an action of the relevant moduli space. There are several unexpected structures and conditions that arise in this extension which are forced upon us by considering the open sector. For string topology type operations, one cannot just consider graphs, but has to take punctures into account and one has to restrict the underlying Frobenius algebras. In the moduli space, one first has to pass to a smaller moduli space which is closed under …
We investigate the homotopy classes of closed knight's tours on cylinders and tori. Specifically, we characterize the dimensions of cylindrical chessboards that admit closed knight's tours realizing the identity of the fundamental group and those that admit closed tours realizing a generator of the fundamental group. We also produce analogous results for toroidal chessboards.
In this paper, we define the notion of closed models defined by counting, and we compute their homotopy categories. We apply this construction to various categories of graphs. We show that there does not exist a closed model in the category of undirected graphs which characterizes the Ihara Zeta function in the sense that, a morphism $f:X\rightarrow Y$ is a weak equivalence for this model if and only if it induces a bijection between the sets of non degenerated cycles of $X$ and $Y$. Finally, we apply our construction to Galoisian complexes and dessins d'enfant.
In this expository paper we discuss a project regarding the string topology of a manifold, that was inspired by recent work of Moore-Segal, Costello, and Hopkins and Lurie, on "open-closed topological conformal field theories". Given a closed, oriented manifold M, we describe the "string topology category" S_M, which is enriched over chain complexes over a fixed field k. The objects of S_M are connected, closed, oriented submanifolds N of M, and the complex of morphisms between N_1 and N_2 is a chain complex homotopy equivalent to the singular chains C_*(P_{N_1, N_2}), where C_*(P_{N_1, N_2}) …
In this manuscript, we consider cobordism operations in the $2$-dimensional labeled open-closed topological quantum field theory for the classifying space of a connected compact Lie group in the sense of Guldberg. In particular, it is proved that the whistle cobordism operation is non-trivial in general provided the labels are in the set of maximal closed subgroups of the given Lie group. The non-triviality of cobordism operations induced by gluing the whistle with the opposite and other labeled cobordisms is also discussed.
7-dimensional closed and simply-connected manifolds have been attractive as central and explicit objects in algebraic topology and differential topology of higher dimensional closed and simply-connected manifolds, which were studied actively especially in the 1950s--60s. Attractive studies of the class of these $7$-dimensional manifolds were started by the discovery of so-called exotic spheres by Milnor. It has influenced on the understanding of higher dimensional closed and simply-connected manifolds via algebraic and abstract objects. Recently this class is studied via more concrete notions …
We observe that the class of metric $f$-$K$-contact manifolds, which naturally contains that of $K$-contact manifolds, is closed under forming mapping tori of automorphisms of the structure. We show that the de Rham cohomology of compact metric $f$-$K$-contact manifolds naturally splits off an exterior algebra, and relate the closed leaves of the characteristic foliation to its basic cohomology.
This paper constructs an h-model structure for diagrams of streams, locally preordered spaces. Along the way, the paper extends some classical characterizations of Hurewicz fibrations and closed Hurewicz cofibrations. The usual characterization of classical closed Hurewicz cofibrations as inclusions of neighborhood deformation retracts extends. A characterization of classical Hurewicz fibrations as algebras over a pointed Moore cocylinder endofunctor also extends. An immediate consequence is a long exact sequence for directed homotopy monoids, with applications to safety verifications for data…
We show that in closed string topology and in open-closed string topology with one $D$-brane, higher genus stable string operations are trivial. This is a consequence of Harer's stability theorem and related stability results on the homology of mapping class groups of surfaces with boundaries. In fact, this vanishing result is a special case of a general result which applies to all homological conformal field theories with a property that in the associated topological quantum field theories, the string operations associated to genus one cobordisms with one or two boundaries vanish. In closed s…
We use the non-proper Morse theory of Palais-Smale to investigate the topology of smooth closed subvarieties of complex semi-abelian varieties, and that of their infinite cyclic covers. As main applications, we obtain the finite generation (except in the middle degree) of the corresponding integral Alexander modules, as well as the signed Euler characteristic property and generic vanishing for rank-one local systems on such subvarieties. Furthermore, we give a more conceptual (topological) interpretation of the signed Euler characteristic property in terms of vanishing of Novikov homology. As …
We give topological lower bounds on the number of periodic and closed trajectories in strictly convex smooth billiards. We use variational reduction admitting a finite group of symmetries and apply topological approach based on equivariant Morse and Lusternik - Schnirelman theories. The paper continues results published in math.DG/9911226 and math.DG/0006049
Let M be a closed, oriented, n -manifold, and LM its free loop space. Chas and Sullivan defined a commutative algebra structure in the homology of LM, and a Lie algebra structure in its equivariant homology. These structures are known as the string topology loop product and string bracket, respectively. In this paper we prove that these structures are homotopy invariants in the following sense. Let f : M_1 \to M_2 be a homotopy equivalence of closed, oriented n -manifolds. Then the induced equivalence, Lf : LM_1 \to LM_2 induces a ring isomorphism in homology, and an isomorphism of Lie algebra…
Let M be a smooth, simply-connected, closed oriented manifold, and LM the free loop space of M. Using a Poincare duality model for M, we show that the reduced equivariant homology of LM has the structure of a Lie bialgebra, and we construct a Hopf algebra which quantizes the Lie bialgebra.
In this paper we will discuss how one may be able to use mean curvature flow to tackle some of the central problems in topology in 4-dimensions. We will be concerned with smooth closed 4-manifolds that can be smoothly embedded as a hypersurface in R^5. We begin with explaining why all closed smooth homotopy spheres can be smoothly embedded. After that we discuss what happens to such a hypersurface under the mean curvature flow. If the hypersurface is in general or generic position before the flow starts, then we explain what singularities can occur under the flow and also why it can be assumed…
Using methods from coarse topology we show that fundamental classes of closed enlargeable manifolds map non-trivially both to the rational homology of their fundamental groups and to the K-theory of the corresponding reduced C*-algebras. Our proofs do not depend on the Baum--Connes conjecture and provide independent confirmation for specific predictions derived from this conjecture.
