The decaying speed of sound can lead to the emergence of the primordial density perturbation in any expanding phase, even if the expansion is decelerated. Recently, some proposals have been given to implement this mechanism, in which it was found that the primordial spectrum of scalar perturbation can be scale invariant. In this note, we will give more insights for the details of this seeding mechanism.
Models of Co-Decaying dark matter lead to an early matter dominated epoch -- prior to BBN -- which results in an enhancement of the growth of dark matter substructure. If these primordial structures collapse further they can form primordial black holes providing an additional dark matter candidate. We derive the mass fraction in these black holes (which is not monochromatic) and consider observational constraints on how much of the dark matter could be comprised in these relics. We find that in many cases they can be a significant fraction of the dark matter. Interestingly, the masses of these…
The hemispherical power asymmetry in the cosmic microwave background may be explained by the modulation of some primordial cosmological parameter, such as the sound speed of the inflaton. This modulation can be achieved by the perturbation of a light field during inflation. We numerically examine this mechanism and show it can be consistent with current observations. Further, this model predicts that the power asymmetry also exists in the temperature-polarization correlation and polarization autocorrelation with the same shape, and in primordial non-gaussianity of equilateral type with a parti…
We investigate the relation between the non-Gaussianities of the primordial perturbations and the sound speed of the tensor perturbations, that is, the propagation speed of the gravitational waves. We find that the sound speed of the tensor perturbations is directly related not to the auto-bispectrum of the tensor perturbations but to the cross-bispectrum of the primordial perturbations, especially, the scalar-tensor-tensor bispectrum. This result is in sharp contrast with the case of the scalar (curvature) perturbations, where their reduced sound speed enhances their auto-bispectrum. Our find…
We investigate photon signatures of general decaying dark-matter particles in halos of primordial black holes. We derive the halo-profile density and the total decay rate for these combined dark-matter scenarios. For the case of axion-like particles of masses below $\mathcal{O}( 1 )\,$keV, we find strong bounds on the decay constant which are several orders of magnitude stronger than the strongest existing bounds, for all halo masses above $\mathcal{O}( 10^{-5} )$ solar masses. Using future X-ray measurements, it will be possible to push these bounds on such combined dark-matter scenarios even…
We report on a novel phenomenon of the resonance effect of primordial density perturbations arisen from a sound speed parameter with an oscillatory behavior, which can generically lead to the formation of primordial black holes in the early Universe. For a general inflaton field, it can seed primordial density fluctuations and their propagation is governed by a parameter of sound speed square. Once if this parameter achieves an oscillatory feature for a while during inflation, a significant non-perturbative resonance effect on the inflaton field fluctuations takes place around a critical lengt…
We study sound speed resonance (SSR) mechanism for primordial black hole (PBH) formation in an early universe scenario with inflaton and curvaton being mixed. In this scenario, the total primordial density perturbations can be contributed by the fluctuations from both the inflaton and curvaton fields, in which the inflaton fluctuations lead to the standard adiabatic perturbations, while the sound speed of the curvaton fluctuations are assumed to be oscillating during inflation. Due to the narrow resonance effect of SSR mechanism, we acquire the enhanced primordial density perturbations on smal…
We explore a plausible mechanism that the hemispherical power asymmetry in the CMB is produced by the spatial variation of the primordial sound speed parameter. We suggest that in a generalized approach of the $δN$ formalism the local e-folding number may depend on some other primordial parameters besides the initial values of inflaton. Here the $δN$ formalism is extended by considering the effects of a spatially varying sound speed parameter caused by a super-Hubble perturbation of a light field. Using this generalized $δN$ formalism, we systematically calculate the asymmetric primordial spec…
We present a concrete realization of the sound speed resonance (SSR) mechanism for primordial black hole (PBH) formation within a specific model of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) inflation. We perform a perturbative approach to phenomenologically construct such a viable DBI inflation model that involves the nonoscillating stage and the oscillating stage, with a type of specific forms of the warp factor and the potential. We show that the continuous but nonsmooth conjunction of sound speed between two stages does not yield manifest effects on the phenomenology of SSR, and thus, our model gives rise to…
Many models of the early universe predict that there should be primordial tensor perturbations. These leave an imprint into the temperature and polarisation anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The differential equation describing the primordial tensor perturbations is a second order differential equation and thus has two solutions. Canonically, the decaying solution of this equation in radiation domination is dropped as it diverges at early times and on superhorizon scales while it is then suppressed at late times. Furthermore, if there is an inflationary phase prior to the …
As potential candidates of dark matter, primordial black holes (PBHs) are within the core scopes of various astronomical observations. In light of the explosive development of gravitational wave (GW) and radio astronomy, we thoroughly analyze a stochastic background of cosmological GWs, induced by over large primordial density perturbations, with several spikes that was inspired by the sound speed resonance effect and can predict a particular pattern on the mass spectrum of PBHs. With a specific mechanicsm for PBHs formation, we for the first time perform the study of such induced GWs that ori…
We discuss the possibility of producing a significant fraction of dark matter in the form of primordial black holes in the context of the pre-big bang inflationary scenario. We take into account, to this purpose, the enhancement of curvature perturbations possibly induced by a variation of the sound-speed parameter $c_s$ during the string phase of high-curvature inflation. After imposing all relevant observational constraints, we find that the considered class of models is compatible with the production of a large amount of primordial black holes in the mass range relevant to dark matter, prov…
We calculate the three-point function for primordial scalar fluctuations in a single field inflationary scenario where the scalar field Lagrangian is a completely general function of the field and its first derivative. We obtain an explicit expression for the three-point correlation function in a self-consistent approximation scheme where the expansion rate varies slowly, analogous to the slow-roll limit in standard, single-field inflation. The three-point function can be written in terms of the familiar slow-roll parameters and three new parameters which measure the non-trivial kinetic struct…
We investigate the primordial power spectra for general kinetic inflation models that support a period of kinetic dominance in the case of curved universes. We present derivations of the Mukhanov-Sasaki equations with a nonstandard scalar kinetic Lagrangian which manifests itself through the inflationary sound speed $c_s^2$. We extend the analytical approximations exploited in Contaldi et al [1] and Thavanesan et al [2] to general kinetic Lagrangians and show the effect of $k$-inflation on the primordial power spectra for models with curvature. In particular, the interplay between sound speed …
In the standard inflationary paradigm, cosmological density perturbations are generated as quantum fluctuations in the early Universe, but then undergo a quantum-to-classical transition. A key role in this transition is played by squeezing of the quantum state, which is a result of the strong suppression of the decaying mode component of the perturbations. Motivated by ever improving measurements of the cosmological perturbations, we ask whether there are scenarios where this decaying mode is nevertheless still observable in the late Universe, ideally leading to a ``smoking gun'' signature of …

In single-field inflationary models with a low sound speed, the orthogonal shape of the primordial bispectrum arises due to partial cancellations between equilateral-type shapes. This fact allows for a speed of sound c_s as low as about 0.01, which is actually weakly preferred by WMAP data. For such values, the trispectrum, scaling like 1/c_s^4, is of order 10^8 and is therefore comparable to, and greater than, the 1 sigma observational bound t_NL^eq=(-3.11 +- 7.5)*10^6. Hence, the trispectrum is already constraining inflationary mechanisms candidates for generating an orthogonal bispectrum at…
We study a mechanism for the amplification of the inflationary scalar perturbation when the inflaton field action is non-canonical, i.e. the inflaton kinetic term has a non-standard form. For such a case the speed of sound of the perturbations generated during inflation is less than one and in general changes with time. Furthermore in such models, even when the scalar field potential is negligible, diverse inflationary attractors may exist. The possible effects of a speed of sound approaching zero during some stage of inflation may lead to a large amplification for the amplitude of the scalar …
We study the bispectrum of the primordial curvature perturbation on uniform-density hypersurfaces generated by a kind of the noncanonical warm inflation, wherein the inflation is provided by a noncanonical scalar inflaton field that is coupled to radiation through a thermal dissipation effect. We obtain an analytic form for the nonlinear parameter $f_{NL}$ that describes the non-Gaussianity in first-order cosmological perturbation theory and analyse the magnitude of this nonlinear parameter. We make a comparison between our result and those of the standard inflation and the canonical warm infl…
Decaying vacuum models are a class of models that incorporate the vacuum energy density as a time-evolving entity that has the potential to explain the entire evolutionary history of the universe in a single framework. A general solution to the Friedmann equation can be obtained by considering vacuum energy density as a function of the Hubble parameter. We have obtained the asymptotic solution by choosing the appropriate equation of state for matter and radiation. Finite boundaries in the early and late de Sitter epoch could be defined by considering the evolution of primordial perturbation wa…
The effect of spatial curvature on primordial perturbations is controlled by $ Ω_{K,0}/c_{s}^{2} $, where $ Ω_{K,0} $ is today's fractional density of spatial curvature and $ c_{s} $ is the speed of sound during inflation. Here we study these effects in the limit $ c_{s}\ll 1 $. First, we show that the standard cosmological soft theorems in flat universes are violated in curved universes and the soft limits of correlators can have non-universal contributions even in single-clock inflation. This is a consequence of the fact that, in the presence of spatial curvature, there is a gap between the …
We extend the results of a previous paper where a model of interacting dark energy, with a cosmological term decaying linearly with the Hubble parameter, is tested against the observed mass power spectrum. In spite of the agreement with observations of type Ia supernovas, baryonic acoustic oscillations and the cosmic microwave background, we had shown previously that no good concordance is achieved if we include the mass power spectrum. However, our analysis was based on the ad hoc assumption that the interacting cosmological term is strictly homogeneous. Now we perform a more complete analysi…
We discuss a new mechanism to enhance the spectrum of primordial tensor fluctuations in single field inflationary scenarios. The enhancement relies on a transitory non-attractor inflationary phase, which amplifies the would-be decaying tensor mode, and gives rise to a growth of tensor fluctuations at superhorizon scales. We show that the enhancement produced during this phase can be neatly treated via a tensor duality between an attractor and non-attractor phase, which we introduce. We illustrate the mechanism and duality in a kinetically driven scenario of inflation, with non-minimal coupling…
We exhibit a varying speed of light (VSL) theory that implements the recently proposed decaying speed of sound mechanism for generating density fluctuations. We avail ourselves of bimetric VSL theories, where the speed of gravity differs from that of light. We first show that a Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type of $K$-essence has the necessary speed of sound profile to produce (near) scale-invariant fluctuations. We then examine the map between bimetric and $K$-essence models: typically the bi-scalar connecting the two metrics is a $K$-essence field in one of them. Remarkably, the DBI model is foun…
We investigate the effects of the background primordial magnetic field (PMF) on the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The sound speed of the tightly coupled photon-baryon fluid is increased by the background PMF. The increased sound speed causes the odd peaks of the CMB temperature fluctuations to be suppressed and the CMB peak positions to be shifted to a larger scale. The background PMF causes a stronger decaying potential and increases the amplitude of the CMB. These two effects of the background PMF on a smaller scale cancel out, and the overall effects of the background PMF are the suppr…
We simulate the evolution of a dust universe from $z=1089$ to $z=0$ by numerically integrating the Einstein's equation for a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaire-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background spacetime with scalar perturbations which are derived from the matter power spectrum produced with the Code for Anisotropies in the Microwave Background (CAMB). To investigate the effects of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) on the inhomogeneity of the universe, we add an additional decaying, divergenceless and traceless primordial tensor perturbation with its initial amplitude being $3\times 10^{-4}$…
We consider anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) generated by spatially limited seeds; these objects could correspond to relics of high energy symmetry breaking in the early universe. It is shown how the CMB perturbation propagate beyond the size of the seed in the form of waves traveling with the CMB sound velocity. Moreover, these waves are the substantial part of the signal, both for polarization and temperature. The explanation of this phenomenology in terms of the CMB equations is given. Observationally, this effect is threefold promising. First, it enlarges the signal fr…

It is widely known that bouncing models with a dust hydrodynamical fluid satisfying ${c_s^2=p_d/ρ_d\approx 0}$, where $c_s, p_d, ρ_d$ are the sound velocity, pressure and energy density of the dust fluid, respectively, have almost scale invariant spectrum of scalar perturbations and negligible primordial gravitational waves. We investigate whether adding another fluid with $1/3 < λ= p/ρ< 1$, which should dominate near the bounce, can increase the amplitude of gravitational waves in the high frequency regime, turning them detectable in near future observations for such range of frequencies. Ind…

We consider general mixtures of isocurvature and adiabatic cosmological perturbations. With a minimal assumption set consisting of the linearized Einstein equations and a primordial perfect fluid we derive the second-order action and its curvature variables. We also allow for varying equation of state and speed of sound profiles. The derivation is therefore carried out at the same level of generality that has been achieved for adiabatic modes before. As a result we find a new conserved super-horizon quantity and relate it to the adiabatically conserved curvature perturbation. Finally we demons…
We focus on the evolution of curvature perturbation on superhorizon scales by adopting the spatial gradient expansion and show that the nonlinear theory, called the beyond $δN$-formalism as the next-leading order in the expansion. As one application of our formalism for a single scalar field, we investigate the case of varying sound speed. In our formalism, we can deal with the time evolution in contrast to $δN$-formalism, where curvature perturbations remain just constant, and nonlinear curvature perturbation follows the simple master equation whose form is similar as one in linear theory. So…
Inflationary perturbations in multi-field theories can exhibit a transient tachyonic instability as a consequence of their non-trivial motion in the internal field space. When an effective single-field description is applicable, the resulting theory is characterized by fluctuations that propagate with an $imaginary$ speed of sound. We use the effective field theory of fluctuations to study such a set-up in a model-independent manner, highlighting the peculiarities and subtleties that make it different from the standard case. In particular, perturbations feature exponentially growing and decayi…
We show that in single field inflationary models the super-horizon evolution of curvature perturbations on comoving slices $\mathcal{R}$, which can cause the production of primordial black holes (PBH), is not due to entropy perturbations, but to the background evolution effect on the conversion between entropy and curvature perturbations. We derive a general relation between the time derivative of comoving curvature perturbations and entropy perturbations, in terms of a conversion factor depending on the background evolution. Contrary to previous results derived in the uniform density gauge as…
If light enough primordial black holes (PBH) account for dark matter, then its density decreases with time as they lose mass via Hawking radiation. We show that this time-dependence of the matter density can be formulated as an equivalent $w(z)$ dark energy model and we study its implications on the expansion history. Using our approach and comparing with the latest cosmological data, including the supernovae type Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, Cosmic Microwave Background and the Hubble expansion H(z) data, we place observational constraints on the PBH model. We find that it is statisticall…
We study the amplification of the curvature perturbations due to a small sound speed and find that its origin is different completely from that due to the ultraslow-roll inflation. This is because when the sound speed is very small the enhancement of the power spectrum comes from the fact that the curvature perturbations at the scales smaller than the cosmic microwave background (CMB) scale becomes scale-variant, rather than growing that leads to the amplification of the curvature perturbations during the ultraslow-roll inflation. At large scales the power spectrum of the curvature perturbatio…
We consider an inflationary scenario in the holographic braneworld with a cosmological fluid occupying the 3+1 dimensional brane located at the holographic boundary of an asymptotic ADS$_5$ bulk. The contribution of the boundary conformal field can be represented as a modification of Einstein's equations on the boundary. Using these effective Einstein equations we calculate the cosmological perturbations and derive the corresponding power spectra assuming a general $k$-essence type of inflaton. We find that the braneworld scenario affects the scalar power spectrum only in the speed of sound de…
We discuss and clarify the validity of effective single field theories of inflation obtained by integrating out heavy degrees of freedom in the regime where adiabatic perturbations propagate with a suppressed speed of sound. We show by construction that it is indeed possible to have inflationary backgrounds where the speed of sound remains suppressed and slow-roll persists for long enough. In this class of models, heavy fields influence the evolution of adiabatic modes in a manner that is consistent with decoupling of physical low and high energy degrees of freedom. We emphasize the distinctio…
Using the concept of apparent horizon for dynamical black holes, we revisit the formation of primordial black holes (PBH) in the early universe for both linear and non-linear regimes. First, we develop the perturbation theory for spherically symmetric spacetimes to study the formation of spherical PBHs in linear regime and we fix two gauges. We also introduce a well defined gauge invariant quantity for the expansion. Using this quantity, we argue that PBHs do not form in the linear regime. Finally, we study the non-linear regime. We adopt the spherical collapse picture by taking a closed FRW m…
Following on after two previous papers discussing the formation of primordial black holes in the early universe, we present here results from an in-depth investigation of the extent to which primordial black hole formation in the radiative era can be considered as an example of the critical collapse phenomenon. We focus on initial supra-horizon-scale perturbations of a type which could have come from inflation, with only a growing component and no decaying component. In order to study perturbations with amplitudes extremely close to the supposed critical limit, we have modified our previous co…
