We report on a novel device capable of imaging second-order spatio-temporal correlations g2(x,t) between photons. The imager is based on a monolithic array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPAD) implemented in CMOS technology and a simple algorithm to treat multiphoton time-of-arrival distributions from different SPAD pairs. It is capable of 80 ps temporal resolution with fluxes as low as 10 photons/s at room temperature. An important application might be the local imaging of g2 as a means of confirming the presence of true Bose-Einstein macroscopic coherence (BEC) of cavity exciton polaritons.
Spiking behavior and a high degree of intensity correlation of frequency up- and down-converted directional radiation from population-inverted alkali vapors excited with a continuous-wave laser pumping are attributed to cooperative effects.
The feasibility to generate correlated photon pairs at variable frequencies is investigated. For this purpose, we consider the interaction of an off-resonant laser field with a two-level system possessing broken inversion symmetry. We show that the system generates non-classical photon pairs exhibiting strong intensity-intensity correlations. The intensity of the applied laser tunes the degree of correlation while the detuning controls the frequency of one of the photons which can be in the THz-domain. Furthermore, we observe the violation of a Cauchy-Schwarz inequality characterizing these ph…
We investigate the super and sub-radiance characteristics of the radiation emitted from a system of three two-level atoms, in the GHZ and W-states. The dipolar coupling between atoms leads to two distinct configurations, one in which the three atoms are on a line, and the other in a closed loop form, wherein each atom interacts with both its neighbours. The quantum statistical properties of the emitted radiation show distinctly different characteristics for the GHZ and W-states resulting from the above configurations. The far-field radiation pattern also shows distinct differences between diff…
It is not widely appreciated that many subtleties are involved in the accurate measurement of intensity-correlated photons; even for the original experiments of Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT). Using a monolithic 4x4 array of single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), together with an off-chip algorithm for processing streaming data, we investigate the difficulties of measuring second-order photon correlations g2 in a wide variety of light fields that exhibit dramatically different correlation statistics: a multimode He-Ne laser, an incoherent intensity-modulated lamp-light source and a thermal lig…
In this paper, we propose a theoretical scheme of ghost imaging in terms of $N$th-order correlated thermal light. We obtain the Gaussian thin lens equations in the ghost imaging protocol. We show that it is possible to produce $N-1$ ghost images of an object at different places in a nonlocal fashion by means of a higher-order correlated imaging process with an $N$th-order correlated thermal source and correlation measurement. We investigate the visibility of the ghost images in the scheme, and obtain the upper bounds of the visibility for the $N$th-order correlated thermal-light ghost imaging.…
Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two distant parties to share secret keys with the proven security even in the presence of an eavesdropper with unbounded computational power. Recently, GHz-clock decoy QKD systems have been realized by employing ultrafast optical communication devices. However, security loopholes of high-speed systems have not been fully explored yet. Here we point out a security loophole at the transmitter of the GHz-clock QKD, which is a common problem in high-speed QKD systems using practical band-width limited devices. We experimentally observe the inter-pulse intensit…
The directional spiking infrared and ultraviolet emission from sodium vapors excited to the 4D5/2 level by a continuous-wave resonant laser pump, that constitute a novel feature of the cooperative effects, has been analyzed. Cascade mirrorless lasing at 2207 and 2338 nm on population-inverted transitions and ultraviolet radiation at 330 nm that is generated due to four-wave mixing process demonstrate a high degree of intensity correlation.
We address parametric-downconversion seeded by multimode pseudo-thermal fields. We show that this process may be used to generate multimode pairwise correlated states with entanglement properties that can be tuned by controlling the seed intensities. Multimode pseudo-thermal fields seeded parametric-downconversion represents a novel source of correlated states, which allows one to explore the classical-quantum transition in pairwise correlations and to realize ghost imaging and ghost diffraction in regimes not yet explored by experiments.
Using a nondegenerate four-wave mixing process based on a double-$Λ$ scheme in hot cesium vapor, we generate quantum correlated twin beams with a maximum intensity-difference squeezing of 6.5 dB. The substantially improved squeezing can be mainly attributed to very good frequency and phase-difference stability between the pump and probe beams in our experiment. Intensity-difference squeezing can be observed within a wide experimental parameter range, which guarantees its robust generation. Since this scheme produces multi-spatial-mode twin beams at the Cs $D_{1}$ line, it is of interest for ex…
A study of the evolution of two-mode squeezing, entanglement and intensity of the cavity radiation of a two-photon correlated emission laser initially seeded with a thermal light is presented. The dependence of the degree of two-mode squeezing and entanglement on the intensity of the thermal light and time is found to have more or less a similar nature, although the actual values differ specially in the early stages of the process and when the atoms are initially prepared in nearly 50:50 probability to be in the upper and lower energy levels. Particularly, seeding the cavity turns out to spoil…
Frequency entangled photon sources are in high demand in a variety of optical quantum technologies, including quantum key distribution, cluster state quantum computation and quantum metrology. In the recent decade, chip-scale entangled photon sources have been developed using silicon platforms, offering robustness, large scalability and CMOS technology compatibility. Here, we report the generation of frequency correlated photon pairs using a 150-GHz silicon nitride ring cavity. First, the device is characterized for studying the phase matching condition during spontaneous four-wave mixing. Nex…
We investigated the intensity noise spectra of the single beam of a pump-enhanced continuous-wave (cw) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which was used to generate quantum correlated twin beams, as a function of the pump power. With a triply (pump-, signal-, and idler-) resonant cavity, the oscillation threshold of our OPO was about 8.5+/-1.3 mW and the measured slope conversion efficiency was 0.72+/-0.02. A twin beams with power of 240 mW were generated at pump power of 350 mW. The relaxation oscillation frequencies, which depend on the pump power, were observed when the pump power of OPO …
The propagation of transverse spatial correlations of photon pairs through arbitrary first-order linear optical systems is studied experimentally and theoretically using the fractional Fourier transform. Highly-correlated photon pairs in an EPR-like state are produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and subject to optical fractional Fourier transform systems. It is shown that the joint detection probability can display either correlation, anti-correlation, or no correlation, depending on the sum of the orders $α$ and $β$ of the transforms of the down-converted photons. We present ana…
We outline the potential gains of quantum correlated imaging and compare it to classical correlated imaging. As shown earlier by A. Gatti, E. Bambilla, M. Bache, and L. A. Lugiato, ArXive:quant-ph/0405056, classical correlated imaging can mimic most features of quantum imaging but at lower signal-to-noise ratio for a given mean photon number (or intensity). In this paper we specifically investigate coherent correlated imaging, and show that while it is possible to perform such imaging using a thermal source, a coherent light-source provides a less demanding experimental setup. We also compare …
Imaging in a broad light-intensity regime with a high signal-to-noise ratio is a key capability in fields as diverse as Quantum Metrology and Astronomy. Achieving high signal-to-noise ratios in quantum imaging leads to surpassing the classical limit in parameter estimation. In astronomical detection, the search for habitable exoplanets demands imaging in the infrared its atmospheres looking for biosignatures. These optical applications are hampered by detection noise, which critically limits their potential, and thus demands photon-number and spatial resolution detectors. Here we report an ima…
It is shown that spatial correlation functions measured for correlated photon pairs at the single-photon level correspond to speckle patterns visible at high intensities. This correspondence is observed for the first time in one experimental setup by using different acquisition modes of an intensified CCD camera in low and high intensity regimes. The behavior of intensity auto- and cross-correlation functions in dependence on pump-beam parameters including power and transverse profile is investigated.
We experimentally study the properties of coherent mode decomposition for intensity correlation function of quasi-thermal light. We use the technique of spatial mode selection developed for studying transverse entanglement of photon pairs, and show that it can be extended to characterize classical spatial correlations. Our results demonstrate the existence of a unique for a given thermal source basis of coherent modes, correlated in a way much resembling the Schmidt modes of spatially entangled photons.
We propose a new framework combining weak measurement and second-order correlated technique. The theoretical analysis shows that WVA experiment can also be implemented by a second-order correlated system. We then build two-dimensional second-order correlated function patterns for achieving higher amplification factor and discuss the signal-to-noise ratio influence. Several advantages can be obtained by our proposal. For instance, detectors with high resolution are not necessary. Moreover, detectors with low saturation intensity are available in WVA setup. Finally, type-one technical noise can …
We study a dispersion-compensated high-finesse optical Fabry-Perot microcavity under high-intensity cw pumping. The Kerr non-linearity in the optical coatings causes a spontaneous four-wave mixing process, which leads to the emission of time-correlated photon pairs. The photon frequencies are shifted by $\pm 1$ free spectral range relative to the pump frequency. This setup allows for constructing a photon-pair source with precisely adjustable frequency difference between the emitted photons, which may have applications in quantum communication.
We study the collective dephasing process of a system of non-interacting atomic qubits, immersed in a spatially uniform magnetic field of fluctuating intensity. The correlation properties of bipartite states are analysed based on a geometric representation of the state space. Particular emphasis is put on the dephasing-assisted generation of states with a high correlation rank, which can be related to discord-type correlations and allow for direct applications in quantum information theory. Finally we study the conditions that ensure the robustness of initial entanglement and discuss the pheno…
