Starting from the canonical phase space for discretised (4d) BF-theory, we implement a canonical version of the simplicity constraints and construct phase spaces for simplicial geometries. Our construction allows us to study the connection between different versions of Regge calculus and approaches using connection variables, such as loop quantum gravity. We find that on a fixed triangulation the (gauge invariant) phase space associated to loop quantum gravity is genuinely larger than the one for length and even area Regge calculus. Rather, it corresponds to the phase space of area-angle Regge calculus, as defined by Dittrich and Speziale in [arXiv:0802.0864] (prior to the imposition of gluing constraints, that ensure the metricity of the triangulation). We argue that this is due to the fact that the simplicity constraints are not fully implemented in canonical loop quantum gravity. Finally, we show that for a subclass of triangulations one can construct first class Hamiltonian and Diffeomorphism constraints leading to flat 4d space-times.
Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF) equations were recently expressed in terms of the edge lengths of a d-dimensional piecewise linear (PL) simplicial geometry, for d greater than or equal to 2. The structure of the simplicial Ricci flow (SRF) equations are dimensionally agnostic. These SRF equations were tested numerically and analytically in 3D for simple models and reproduced qualitatively the solution of continuum RF equations including a Type-1 neckpinch singularity. Here we examine a continuum limit of the SRF equations for 3D neck pinch geometries with an arbitrary radial profile. We show that t…
A class of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories are constructed and shown to encode the simplicial geometries in 4-dimensions. The gauge theories are defined by applying the Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov construction in 3d/3d correspondence to certain graph complement 3-manifolds. Given a gauge theory in this class, the massive supersymmetric vacua of the theory contain the classical geometries on a 4d simplicial complex. The corresponding 4d simplicial geometries are locally constant curvature (either dS or AdS), in the sense that they are made by gluing geometrical 4-simplices of the sam…
We investigate the signature of the Lund-Regge metric on spaces of simplicial three-geometries which are important in some formulations of quantum gravity. Tetrahedra can be joined together to make a three-dimensional piecewise linear manifold. A metric on this manifold is specified by assigning a flat metric to the interior of the tetrahedra and values to their squared edge-lengths. The subset of the space of squared edge-lengths obeying triangle and analogous inequalities is simplicial configuration space. We derive the Lund-Regge metric on simplicial configuration space and show how it prov…
One can try to define the theory of quantum gravity as the sum over geometries. In two dimensions the sum over {\it Euclidean} geometries can be performed constructively by the method of {\it dynamical triangulations}. One can define a {\it proper-time} propagator. This propagator can be used to calculate generalized Hartle-Hawking amplitudes and it can be used to understand the the fractal structure of {\it quantum geometry}. In higher dimensions the philosophy of defining the quantum theory, starting from a sum over Euclidean geometries, regularized by a reparametrization invariant cut off w…
Simplicial geometries are collections of simplices making up a manifold together with an assignment of lengths to the edges that define a metric on that manifold. The simplicial analogs of the Einstein equations are the Regge equations. Solutions to these equations define the semiclassical approximation to simplicial approximations to a sum-over-geometries in quantum gravity. In this paper, we consider solutions to the Regge equations with cosmological constant that give Euclidean metrics of high symmetry on a family of triangulations of CP^2 presented by Banchoff and Kuhnel. This family is ch…
The Hilbert action is derived for a simplicial geometry. I recover the usual Regge calculus action by way of a decomposition of the simplicial geometry into 4-dimensional cells defined by the simplicial (Delaunay) lattice as well as its dual (Voronoi) lattice. Within the simplicial geometry, the Riemann scalar curvature, the proper 4-volume, and hence, the Regge action is shown to be exact, in the sense that the definition of the action does not require one to introduce an averaging procedure, or a sequence of continuum metrics which were common in all previous derivations. It appears that the…
We develop a proposal for a theory of simplicial gravity with spinors as the fundamental configuration variables. The underlying action describes a mechanical system with finitely many degrees of freedom, the system has a Hamiltonian and local gauge symmetries. We will close with some comments on the resulting quantum theory, and explain the relation to loop quantum gravity and twisted geometries. The paper appears in parallel with an article by Cortês and Smolin, who study the relevance of the model for energetic causal sets and various other approaches to quantum gravity.
Simplicial approximation and the ideas associated with the Regge calculus.provide a concrete way of implementing a sum over histories formulation ofquantum gravity. A four-dimensional simplicial geometry is made up of flat four-simplices joined together.A sum over simplicial geometries is a sum over thedifferent ways the simplices can be joined together with an integral over their edge lengths.Theconstruction of the simplicial Euclidean action for this approach to quantum general relativity is illustrated. The recovery of the diffeomorphism group in the continuum limit is discussed. Some possi…
While there has been some advance in the use of Regge calculus as a tool in numerical relativity, the main progress in Regge calculus recently has been in quantum gravity. After a brief discussion of this progress, attention is focussed on two particular, related aspects. Firstly, the possible definitions of diffeomorphisms or gauge transformations in Regge calculus are examined and examples are given. Secondly, an investigation of the signature of the simplicial supermetric is described. This is the Lund-Regge metric on simplicial configuration space and defines the distance between simplicia…
Networks are topological and geometric structures used to describe systems as different as the Internet, the brain or the quantum structure of space-time. Here we define complex quantum network geometries, describing the underlying structure of growing simplicial 2-complexes, i.e. simplicial complexes formed by triangles. These networks are geometric networks with energies of the links that grow according to a non-equilibrium dynamics. The evolution in time of the geometric networks is a classical evolution describing a given path of a path integral defining the evolution of quantum network st…
In fundamentally discrete approaches to quantum gravity such as loop quantum gravity, spin-foam models, group field theories or Regge calculus observables are functions on discrete geometries. We present a bra-ket formalism of function spaces and discrete calculus on abstract simplicial complexes equipped with geometry and apply it to the mentioned theories of quantum gravity. In particular we focus on the quantum geometric Laplacian and discuss as an example the expectation value of the heat kernel trace from which the spectral dimension follows.
After a brief summary of the basic properties of stationary spacetimes representing rotating, charged black holes in strong axisymmetric magnetic fields, we concentrate on extremal cases, for which the horizon surface gravity vanishes. We investigate their properties by constructing simpler spacetimes that exhibit their geometries near degenerate horizons. Starting from the symmetry arguments we find that the near-horizon geometries of extremal magnetised Kerr-Newman black holes can be characterised by just one dimensionless parameter: "effective Kerr-Newman mixing angle". Employing the near-h…
A key point in the spin foam approach to quantum gravity is the implementation of simplicity constraints in the partition functions of the models. Here, we discuss the imposition of these constraints in a phase space setting corresponding to simplicial geometries. On the one hand, this could serve as a starting point for a derivation of spin foam models by canonical quantisation. On the other, it elucidates the interpretation of the boundary Hilbert space that arises in spin foam models. More precisely, we discuss different versions of the simplicity constraints, namely gauge-variant and gauge…
A description of the event horizon of a perturbed Schwarzschild black hole is provided in terms of the intrinsic and extrinsic geometries of the null hypersurface. This description relies on a Gauss-Codazzi theory of null hypersurfaces embedded in spacetime, which extends the standard theory of spacelike and timelike hypersurfaces involving the first and second fundamental forms. We show that the intrinsic geometry of the event horizon is invariant under a reparameterization of the null generators, and that the extrinsic geometry depends on the parameterization. Stated differently, we show tha…
We present the case for a fundamentally discrete quantum spacetime and for Group Field Theories as a candidate consistent description of it, briefly reviewing the key properties of the GFT formalism. We then argue that the outstanding problem of the emergence of a continuum spacetime and of General Relativity from fundamentally discrete quantum structures should be tackled from a condensed matter perspective and using purely QFT methods, adapted to the GFT context. We outline the picture of continuum spacetime as a condensed phase of a GFT and a research programme aimed at realizing this pictu…
The principle of equivalence is used to examine covariant descriptions of quantum phenomena within the global exterior of geometries described using Painlevé- Gullstrand coordinates, which are everywhere non-singular away from their center. The differences between the descriptions of observers stationary within the curvilinear geometry and those in a locally-flat freely-falling system that is momentarily at rest are found to depend only on local proper accelerations, becoming vanishingly small for increasingly distant observers. Away from the horizon, the local detections of outgoing massless …
Simplicial, piecewise-flat discretizations of manifolds provide a clear path towards curvature analysis on discrete geometries and for solutions of PDE's on manifolds of complex topologies. In this manuscript we review and expand on discrete exterior calculus methods using hybrid domains. We then analyze the geometric structure of curvature operators in a piecewise-flat lattice.
The Riemann-Hilbert approach to studying solutions of supergravity theories allows us to associate spacetime independent monodromy matrices (matrices in the Geroch group) with solutions that effectively only depend on two spacetime coordinates. This offers insights into symmetries of supergravity theories, and in the classification of their solutions. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of monodromy matrices for multi-center solutions of five-dimensional U(1)$^3$ supergravity. We obtain monodromy matrices for a class of collinear Bena-Warner bubbling geometries. We show that for this…
We posit a geometrical description of the entanglement of purification for subregions in a holographic CFT. The bulk description naturally generalizes the two-party case and leads to interesting inequalities among multi-party entanglements of purification that can be geometrically proven from the conjecture. Further, we study the relationship between holographic entanglements of purification in locally-AdS3 spacetimes and entanglement entropies in multi-throated wormhole geometries constructed via quotienting by isometries. In particular, we derive new holographic inequalities for geometries t…
Discretization of general relativity is a promising route towards quantum gravity. Discrete geometries have a finite number of degrees of freedom and can mimic aspects of quantum geometry. However, selection of the correct discrete freedoms and description of their dynamics has remained a challenging problem. We explore classical area Regge calculus, an alternative to standard Regge calculus where instead of lengths, the areas of a simplicial discretization are fundamental. There are a number of surprises: though the equations of motion impose flatness we show that diffeomorphism symmetry is b…
We perform a detailed investigation of the phase structure and the semiclassical effective action of (2+1)-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) quantum gravity using computer simulations. On the one hand, we study the effect of enlarging the ensemble of triangulations by relaxing the simplicial manifold conditions in a controlled way. On the other hand, we cast a first look at CDT geometries with spatial topology beyond that of the sphere or torus. We measure the phase structure of the model for several triangulation ensembles and spatial topologies, finding evidence that the phas…
The spectral dimension is an indicator of geometry and topology of spacetime and a tool to compare the description of quantum geometry in various approaches to quantum gravity. This is possible because it can be defined not only on smooth geometries but also on discrete (e.g., simplicial) ones. In this paper, we consider the spectral dimension of quantum states of spatial geometry defined on combinatorial complexes endowed with additional algebraic data: the kinematical quantum states of loop quantum gravity (LQG). Preliminarily, the effects of topology and discreteness of classical discrete g…
In Regge calculus the space-time manifold is approximated by certain abstract simplicial complex, called a pseudo-manifold, and the metric is approximated by an assignment of a length to each 1-simplex. In this paper for each pseudomanifold we construct a smooth manifold which we call a manifold with defects. This manifold emerges from the purely combinatorial simplicial complex as a result of gluing geometric realizations of its n-simplices followed by removing the simplices of dimension n-2. The Regge geometry is encoded in a boundary data of a BF-theory on this manifold. We construct an act…
We study instanton solutions and superpotentials for the large number of vacua of the plane-wave matrix model and a 2+1 dimensional Super Yang-Mills theory on $R\times S^2$ with sixteen supercharges. We get the superpotential in the weak coupling limit from the gauge theory description. We study the gravity description of these instantons. Perturbatively with respect to a background, they are Euclidean branes wrapping cycles in the dual gravity background. Moreover, the superpotential can be given by the energy of the electric charge system characterizing each vacuum. These charges are interpr…
We analyze the recent proposal of measuring a quantum gravity phenomenon in the lab by entangling two particles gravitationally. We give a generally covariant description of this phenomenon, where the relevant effect turns out to be a quantum superposition of proper times. We point out that measurement of this effect would count as evidence for quantum superposition of spacetime geometries. This interpretation addresses objections appeared in the literature. We observe that the effect sheds light on the Planck mass, and argue that it is very plausibly a real effect.
Growing network models have been shown to display emergent quantum statistics when nodes are associated to a fitness value describing the intrinsic ability of a node to acquire new links. Recently it has been shown that quantum statistics emerge also in a growing simplicial complex model called Network Geometry with Flavor which allow for the description of many-body interaction between the nodes. This model depend on an external parameter called flavor that is responsible for the underlying topology of the simplicial complex. When the flavor takes the value $s=-1$ the $d$-dimensional simplici…
We demonstrate a tensor renormalization group (TRG) calculation for a two-dimensional Lorentzian model of quantum Regge calculus (QRC). This model is expressed in terms of a tensor network by discretizing the continuous edge lengths of simplicial manifolds and identifying them as tensor indices. The expectation value of space-time area, which is obtained through the higher-order TRG method, nicely reproduces the exact value. The Lorentzian model does not have the spike configuration that was an obstacle in the Euclidean QRC, but it still has a length-divergent configuration called a pinched ge…
