We present experiments on weakly-pinned vortices, which exhibit a large critical transverse depinning force. These results are obtained in the superconducting metallic glasses Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$Zr$_{2}$ using crossed ac and dc driving currents. We study the vortex depinning force due to the transverse ac drive as a function of a longitudinal dc drive; the ac/dc combination permits the separation of the transverse drive from the longitudinal one. We show that the force required for depinning in the transverse direction is greatly enhanced by the longitudinal drive, which demonstrates the existence of a large transverse critical force. The measurements are performed as a function of magnetic field and temperature and show that the transverse critical force exists in a large portion of the phase diagram. Hysteresis observed at the transverse depinning threshold is consistent with a first-order transverse depinning transition.
We present experimental evidence for the existence of a large critical transverse depinning force. These results are obtained in the weakly-pinned superconducting metal glasses Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$Zr$_{2}$ using crossed ac and dc driving currents. We study the depinning force due to the transverse ac drive as a function of a longitudinal dc drive. The ac/dc combination allows us to separate the transverse drive from the longitudinal one. We show that the force required for depinning in the transverse direction is enhanced by a longitudinal drive, which leads to the existence of a large transvers…
We examine the depinning transitions and the temperature versus driving force phase diagram for magnetically interacting pancake vortices in layered superconductors. For strong disorder the initial depinning is plastic followed by a sharp hysteretic transition to a 3D ordered state for increasing driving force. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions for driven anisotropic charge density wave systems. We also show that a temperature induced peak effect in the critical current occurs due to the onset of plasticity between the layers.
Using Ginzburg-Landau theory, we have performed detailed studies of vortices in the presence of artificial defect arrays, for a thin film geometry. We show that when a vortex approaches the vicinity of a defect, an abrupt transition occurs in which the vortex core develops a ``string'' extending to the defect boundary, while simultaneously the supercurrents and associated magnetic flux spread out and engulf the defect. Current induced depinning of vortices is shown to be dominated by the core string distortion in typical experimental situations. Experimental consequences of this unusual depinn…
We simulate the ordering of vortices and its effects on the critical current in superconductors with varied vortex-vortex interaction strength and varied pinning strengths for a two-dimensional system. For strong pinning the vortex lattice is always disordered and the critical depinning force only weakly increases with decreasing vortex-vortex interactions. For weak pinning the vortex lattice is defect free until the vortex-vortex interactions have been reduced to a low value, when defects begin to appear with a simultaneous rapid increase in the critical depinning force. In each case the depi…
In borocarbide ErNi$_2$B$_2$C the phase transition to the commensurate spin density wave at 2.3 K leaves 1/20 part of Ising-like Er spins practically free. Vortices polarize these spins nonuniformly and repolarize them when moving. At a low spin relaxation rate and at low bias currents vortices carrying magnetic polarization clouds become polaron-like and their velocities are determined by the effective drag coefficient which is significantly bigger than the Bardeen-Stephen (BS) one. As current increases, at a critical current $J_c$ vortices release polarization clouds and the velocity as well…
We show that gapless superconductivity of a strongly type-II superconductor in a high magnetic field prevails in the presence of disorder, suggesting a topological nature. We calculate the density of states of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticles for a two-dimensional inhomogeneous system in both cases of weak and strong disorder. In the limit of very weak disorder, the effect is very small and the density of states is not appreciably changed. As the disorder increases, the density of states at low energies increases and the ratio of the low-energy density of states to its maximum increases…
We use three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations of magnetically interacting pancake vortices to study the dynamic phases of vortex lattices in highly anisotropic materials such as BSCCO. Our model treats the magnetic interactions of the pancakes exactly, with long-range logarithmic interactions both within and between planes. The pancake vortices decouple at low drives and show two-dimensional plastic flow. The vortex lattice both recouples and reorders as the driving current is increased, eventually forming a recoupled crystalline-like state at high drives. We construct a phase diagra…
Using a two-coil mutual inductance method, we have measured the complex resistivity, rho_v(T,Be), of pinned vortices in c-axis pulsed laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7-d films with magnetic field Be applied perpendicular to the film. At low frequencies, (<100 kHz), rho_v is inductive and is inversely proportional to the Labusch parameter, the average vortex pinning force constant, kappa_exp. The observed weakening of kappa_exp with Be is consistent with a simple model based on linear pinning defects. Adding classical thermal fluctuations to the model in a simple way describes the observed linear T dep…
The electronic structure of a vortex pinned by an insulating columnar inclusion in a type-II chiral $p_x \pm i p_y$ superconductor is studied within the Bogolubov-de Gennes theory. The structure of the anomalous spectral branch is shown to be strongly affected by the mutual orientations of the angular momenta of the center of mass and the relative motion of the two electrons in the Cooper pair. Being only slightly perturbed by the scattering at the defect for the zero sum of these angular momenta the anomalous spectral branch appears to change dramatically in the absence of such compensation. …
Vortices driven with both a transverse and a longitudinal AC drive which are out of phase are shown to exhibit a novel commensuration-incommensuration effect when interacting with periodic substrates. For different AC driving parameters, the motion of the vortices forms commensurate orbits with the periodicity of the pinning array. When the commensurate orbits are present, there is a finite DC critical depinning threshold, while for the incommensurate phases the vortices are delocalized and the DC depinning threshold is absent.
The electronic structure of a vortex line trapped by an insulating columnar defect in a type-II superconductor is analysed within the Bogolubov-de Gennes theory. For quasiparticle trajectories with small impact parameters defined with respect to the vortex axis the normal reflection of electrons and holes at the defect surface results in the formation of an additional subgap spectral branch. The increase in the impact parameter at this branch is accompanied by the decrease of the excitation energy. When the impact parameter exceeds the radius of the defect this branch transforms into the Carol…
Edge effects in the depinned phase of flux lines in hollow superconducting cylinder with columnar defects and electric current along the cylinder are investigated. Far from the ends of the cylinder vortices are distributed almost uniformly (delocalized). Nevertheless, near the edges these free vortices come closer together and form well resolved dense bunches. A semiclassical picture of this localization after depinning is described. For a large number of vortices their density $ρ(x)$ has square root singularity at the border of the bunch ($ρ(x)$ is semicircle in the simplest case). However, b…
Using computer simulations, we demonstrate a new type of commensurability that occurs for vortices moving longitudinally through periodic pinning arrays in the presence of an additional transverse driving force. As a function of vortex density, there is a series of broad maxima in the transverse critical depinning force that do not fall at the matching fields where the number of vortices equals an integer multiple of the number of pinning sites. The commensurability effects are associated with dynamical states in which evenly spaced structures consisting of one or more moving rows of vortices …
Low-temperature dynamics of flux lines in high temperature, type II, superconductors in the presence of correlated disorder in the form of columnar defects is discussed. The effect of tilting the applied magnetic field with respect to the column's directions is considered, using the non-Hermitian quantum mechanics technique evaluated by Hatano and Nelson. It is shown that the critical current, as well as the vortex transport properties below this current, may be determined by ``surface excitations'', i.e., by the roughness of the flux line near the edges of the sample, which dominated the bulk…
Depinning of vortices in percolative superconductor containing fractal clusters of a normal phase is considered. Transition of the superconductor into a resistive state corresponds to the percolation transition from a pinned vortex state to a resistive state when the vortices are free to move. The motion of the magnetic flux transferred by these vortices gives rise to the region of initial dissipation on current-voltage characteristic. The influence of normal phase clusters on distinctive features of current-voltage characteristics of percolative type-II superconductors is considered. It is fo…
Hall anomaly, as appears in the mixed-state Hall resistivity of type-II superconductors, has had numerous theories but yet a consensus on its origin. In this work, we conducted a quantitative analysis of the magnetotransport measurements on BSCCO thin films by Zhao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 247001 (2019)] and validate a previously proposed vacancy mechanism [cf. J. Phys. Condens. Matter. 10, L677 (1998)] with many-body vortex correlations for the phenomenon. The model attributes the Hall anomaly to the motion of vacancies in pinned fragments of vortex lattice. Its validity is first examine…
We investigate theoretically the eigenmodes and the stability of one and two arbitrary fractional vortices pinned at one and two $κ$-phase discontinuities in a long Josephson junction. In the particular case of a single $κ$-discontinuity, a vortex is spontaneously created and pinned at the boundary between the 0 and $κ$-regions. In this work we show that only two of four possible vortices are stable. A single vortex has an oscillatory eigenmode with a frequency within the plasma gap. We calculate this eigenfrequency as a function of the fractional flux carried by a vortex. For the case of two …
We report controlled local manipulation of single vortices by low temperature magnetic force microscope (MFM) in a thin film of superconducting Nb. We are able to position the vortices in arbitrary configurations and to measure the distribution of local depinning forces. This technique opens up new possibilities for the characterization and use of vortices in superconductors.
We calculate the local density of states of a vortex in a two-dimensional s-wave superconductor, in the presence of a uniform applied supercurrent. The supercurrent induces changes in the electronic structure for the isolated vortex as well as the vortex lattice, which agree with the recent measurements in 2H-NbSe2 [Maldonado et al., Phys. Rev. B 88, 064518 (2013)]. We find that the supercurrent polarizes the core states when the vortices are pinned. This shows that the transfer of momentum from the supercurrent to the bound states and the rigidity of the wave functions must be considered for …
We demonstrate for the first time an observation of the peak effect in simulations of magnetic vortices in a superconductor. The shear modulus $c_{66}$ of the vortex lattice is tuned by adding a fictitious {attractive} short range potential to the usual long-range repulsion between vortices. The peak effect is found to be most pronounced in low densities of pinning centers, and is always associated with a transition from elastic to plastic depinning. The simulations suggest in some situations that over a range of values of $c_{66}$ the production of lattice defects by a driving force enhances …

The ratchet effect is demonstrated theoretically for the simple model of a vortex in a thin superconducting film interacting with a periodic array of magnetic dipoles placed in the vicinity of the film . The pinning potential for the vortex is calculated in the London limit and found to break spatial inversion symmetry and to depend on the orientation of the magnetic dipole moments. The motion of the vortex at zero temperature driven by a force oscillating periodically in time is investigated numerically. Drift vortex motion consisting of displacements by a translation vector of the dipole arr…
Within a Green's function formalism we calculate the electronic structure around static extended magnetic and non-magnetic perturbations in a d-wave superconductor. In partucular, we discuss recent elastic neutron scattering and scanning tunneling experiments on High-T_c cuprates exposed to an applied magnetic field. A physical picture consisting of antiferromagnetic vortex cores operating as pinning centers for surrounding stripes is qualitatively consistent with the neutron data provided the stripes have the usual antiphase modulation. The low energy electronic structure in such a region rev…
In a Type II superconductor, the vortex core behaves like a normal metal. Consequently, the single-particle density of states in the vortex core of a conventional Type II superconductor remains either flat or (for very clean single crystals) exhibits a peak at zero bias due to the formation of Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon bound state inside the core. Here we report an unusual observation from scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements in a weakly pinned thin film of the conventional s-wave superconductor a-MoGe, namely, that a soft gap in the local density of states continues to exist even at t…
We utilize Langevin molecular dynamics simulations to study dynamical critical behavior of magnetic flux lines near the depinning transition in type-II superconductors subject to randomly distributed attractive point defects. We employ a coarse-grained elastic line Hamiltonian for the mutually repulsive vortices and purely relaxational kinetics. In order to infer the stationary-state critical exponents for the continuous non-equilibrium depinning transition at zero temperature T = 0 and at the critical driving current density j_c, we explore two-parameter scaling laws for the flux lines' gyrat…
A model is discussed in which an electric field induces quantum nucleation of soliton-antisoliton pairs in a pinned charge or spin density wave. Coulomb blockade prevents pair creation until the electric field exceeds a sharp threshold value, which can be much smaller than the classical depinning field. We calculate the vacuum state energy and expectation value of the phase, which is treated as a quantum scalar field. We find that the phase can also be much smaller, below threshold, than predicted by classical ``sliding'' density wave models.
Strong pinning of superconducting flux quanta by a square array of 1 $μ$m-sized ferromagnetic dots in a magnetic-vortex state was visualized by low-temperature magnetic force microscopy (LT-MFM). A direct correlation of the superconducting flux lines with the positions of the dots was derived. The force that the MFM tip exerts on the individual vortex in the depinning process was used to estimate the spatial modulation of the pinning potential. It was found, that the superconducting vortices which are preferably located on top of the Py dots experience about 15 times stronger pinning forces as…
Using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with the complex relaxation time and the Maxwell equation, we systematically examine transverse motion of vortex dynamics in the presence of pinning disorders. Consequently, in a plastic flow phase in which moving and pinned vortices coexist, we find that the Hall voltage generally changes its sign. The origin of the sign change is ascribed to a fact that moving vortices are strongly drifted by circular current of pinned vortices and the enforced transverse moving direction becomes opposite to that by transport current. This suggests that the H…
We study the behavior of vortex matter in artificial flow channels confined by pinned vortices in the channel edges (CE's). The critical current $J_s$ is governed by the interaction with static vortices in the CE's. We study structural changes associated with (in)commensurability between the channel width $w$ and the natural row spacing $b_0$, and their effect on $J_s$. The behavior depends crucially on the presence of disorder in the CE arrays. For ordered CE's, maxima in $J_s$ occur at matching $w=nb_0$ ($n$ integer), while for $w\neq nb_0$ defects along the CE's cause a vanishing $J_s$. For…
We examine vortex pinning and dynamics in thin-film superconductors interacting with square and rectangular pinning arrays for varied vortex densities including densities significantly larger than the pinning density. For both square and rectangular pinning arrays, the critical depinning force shows maxima at only certain integer matching fields where the vortices can form highly ordered arrays. For rectangular arrays the depinning force and commensurability effects are anisotropic with a much lower depinning threshold for vortex motion in the easy flow directions. We find evidence for a cross…
We study the pinning of vortices in thin film superconductors by magnetic dots in the London approximation. A single dot is in general able to pin multiple field-induced vortices, up to a saturation number n_s, which can be much larger than one. However, the magnetic field of the dot also creates intrinsic vortices and anti-vortices, which must be accounted for. In a ferromagnetic dot array, the intrinsic anti-vortices are pinned only interstitially. Much stronger pinning effect is expected of an antiferromagnetic dot array. Possible realizations of various magnetic configurations are discusse…
In the mixed state of type II superconductors, vortices penetrate the sample and form a correlated system due to the screening of supercurrents around them. Interestingly, we can study this correlated system as a function of density and driving force. The density, for instance, is controlled by the magnetic field, B, whereas a current density j acts as a driving force F=jxB on all vortices. The free motion of vortices is inhibited by the presence of an underlying potential, which tends to pin the vortices. Hence, to minimize the pinning strength we studied a superconducting glass in which the …
We present simulations of the dynamic critical state for a 2D superconductor with strong pinning centers, corresponding to a matching field twice the applied magnetic field. The sharp crossover between the plastic regime, at low current density and temperature, and the fluid flow regime for flux motion is characterized by the activation energy for flux motion and the transverse diffusion of the vortices trajectory.
Microscopic Derivation of Magnetic Flux Density Profiles, Magnetization Hysteresis Loops, and Critical Currents in Strongly Pinned Superconductors
Large scale numerical simulations are used to study the elastic dynamics of two-dimensional vortex lattices driven on a disordered medium in the case of weak disorder. We investigate the so-called elastic depinning transition by decreasing the driving force from the elastic dynamical regime to the state pinned by the quenched disorder. Similarly to the plastic depinning transition, we find results compatible with a second order phase transition, although both depinning transitions are very different from many viewpoints. We evaluate three critical exponents of the elastic depinning transition.…
Poisson brackets for the Hamiltonian dynamics of vortices are discussed for 3 regimes, in which the dissipation can be neglected and the vortex dynamics is reversible: (i) The superclean regime when the spectral flow is suppressed. (ii) The regime when the fermions are pinned by crystal lattice. This includes also the regime of the extreme spectral flow of fermions in the vortex core: these fermions are effectively pinned by the normal component. (iii) The case when the vortices are strongly pinned by the normal component. All these limits are described by the single parameter $C_0$, which phy…
The interactions between vortices in a thin superconducting film and one magnetic dipole in the presence of a magnetic field applied parallel to the film surfaces are studied theoretically in the London limit. The dipole magnetic moment is assumed to have constant magnitude and freedom to rotate. The pinning potential for an arbitrary vortex configuration is calculated exactly. It is found that, due to the dipole freedom to rotate, the pinning potential differs significantly from that for a permanent dipole. In particular, its dependence on the applied field is non-trivial and allows for tunin…
We study experimentally and theoretically, the reorganization of superconducting vortices driven by oscillatory forces near the plastic depinning transition. We show that the system can be taken to configurations that are tagged by the shaking parameters but keep no trace of the initial conditions. In experiments performed in $NbSe_2$ crystals, the periodic drive is induced by ac magnetic shaking fields and the overall order of the resulting configuration is determined by non invasive ac susceptibility measurements. With a model of interacting particles driven over random landscapes, we perfor…
In magnetic superconductors vortices polarize spins nonuniformly and repolarize them when moving. At a low spin relaxation rate and at low bias currents vortices carrying magnetic polarization clouds become polaron-like and their velocities are determined by the effective drag coefficient which is significantly bigger than the Bardeen-Stephen (BS) one. As current increases, vortices release polarization clouds and the velocity as well as the voltage in the I-V characteristics jump to values corresponding to the BS drag coefficient at a critical current $J_c$. The nonuniform components of the m…
The effects of pinning between fluxoids and vortices in the core of a neutron star, on the dynamics of the core neutron superfluid are considered. The pinning impedes, but does not absolutely block, any radial as well as {\em azimuthal} motion of the neutron vortices with respect to the lattice of fluxoids. The time scale for the coupling of rotation of the core superfluid to the rest of the star is calculated, allowing for the effect of the finite frictional force on the neutron vortices due to their pinning with the fluxoids. This turns out to be the dominant mechanism for the coupling of th…
By analytically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we study the fermion bound states at the center of the core of a vortex in a two-dimensional superconductor. We consider three kinds of 2D superconducting models: (a) a standard type II superconductor in the mixed state with low density of vortex lines, (b) a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling locking the spin parallel to the momentum and (c) a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling locking the spin perpendicular to the momentum. The 2D superconducting states are induced via proximity effect between an $s$-wave supe…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we report a study of the dynamics of two-dimensional vortex lattices driven over a disordered medium. In strong disorder, when topological order is lost, we show that the depinning transition is analogous to a second order critical transition: the velocity-force response at the onset of motion is continuous and characterized by critical exponents. Combining studies at zero and nonzero temperature and using a scaling analysis, two critical expo- nents are evaluated. We find v\sim (F-F_c)^βwith β=1.3\pm0.1 at T=0 and F>F_c, and v\sim T^{1/δ} with δ^{-1}=0.75…
We propose and study a novel way to produce a DC transport of vortices when applying an AC electrical current to a sample. Specifically, we study superconductors with a graduated random pinning density, which transports interacting vortices as a ratchet system. We show that a ratchet effect appears as a consequence of the long range interactions between the vortices. The pinned vortices create an asymmetric periodic flux density profile, which results in an asymmetric effective potential for the unpinned interstitial vortices. The latter exhibit a net longitudinal rectification under an applie…
In the mixed state of type II superconductors penetrated by an external magnetic field in the form of a lattice of Abrikosov vortices the dc resistance is known to increase with increasing velocity of the vortex lattice. Accordingly, vortex pinning sites impeding the vortex motion are widely used to preserve the low-dissipative response of the system. Here, while subjecting superconducting Nb films with nanogrooves to a combination of dc and ac current stimuli and tuning the number of mobile and pinned vortices by varying the magnetic field around the so-called matching values, we observe a co…
We report here the observation of anomalous paramagnetic signal(s) in the isofield field-cooled cool-down magnetization scans (MFCC(T)) recorded for a single crystal of a low Tc superconductor Ca3Ir4Sn13. Novel features emanating from the MFCC(T) response include an oscillatory magnetization behaviour below Tc and a rich multiplicity (non-uniqueness) in magnetization ranging from diamagnetism to paramagnetism at a given H, T value. The metastability in MFCC(T) has been ascribed to non-unique coexistence of multi-quanta vortex states and single quantum (Abrikosov) vortices. Additionally, the is…
We show using numerical simulations that vortices in honeycomb pinning arrays can exhibit a remarkable variety of dynamical phases that are distinct from those found for triangular and square pinning arrays. In the honeycomb arrays, it is possible for the interstitial vortices to form dimer or higher n-mer states which have an additional orientational degree of freedom that can lead to the formation of vortex molecular crystals. For filling fractions where dimer states appear, a novel dynamical symmetry breaking can occur when the dimers flow in one of two possible alignment directions. This l…
Pinning and thermal creep determine the response of numerous systems containing superstructures, e.g., vortices in type II superconductors, domain walls in ferroics, or dislocations in metals. The combination of drive and thermal fluctuations lead to the superstructure's depinning and its velocity $v$ determines the electric, magnetic, or mechanical response. It is commonly believed that pinning and creep collapse above the critical drive $F_c$, entailing a sharp rise in the velocity $v$. We challenge this perception by studying the effects of thermal fluctuations within the framework of stron…
Quantum fluids refer to a class of systems that remain in fluid state down to absolute zero temperature. In this letter, using a combination of magnetotransport and scanning tunneling spectroscopy down to 300 mK, we show that vortices in a very weakly pinned a-MoGe thin film can form a quantum vortex fluid. Under the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the film, the vortex state transforms from a vortex solid to a hexatic vortex fluid and eventually to an isotropic vortex liquid. The fact that the two latter states remain fluid down to absolute zero temperature is evi…
We study numerically the relaxation of a driven elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape. The relaxation of the string, initially flat, is governed by a growing length $L(t)$ separating the short steady-state equilibrated lengthscales, from the large lengthscales that keep memory of the initial condition. We find a macroscopic short time regime where relaxation is universal, both above and below the depinning threshold, different from the one expected for standard critical phenomena. Below the threshold, the zero temperature relaxation towards the first pinned configuration provid…
We propose to use superconductor-magnet multi-layer structure to achieve high critical current density by invoking polaronic mechanism of pinning. The magnetic layers should have large magnetic susceptibility to enhance the coupling between vortices and magnetization in magnetic layers. The relaxation of the magnetization should be slow. When the velocity of vortices is low, they are dressed by nonuniform magnetization and move as polarons. In this case, the viscosity of vortices proportional to the magnetic relaxation time is enhanced significantly. As velocity increases, the polarons dissoci…
The superfluid density is calculated theoretically for incompressible vortex lattices in two dimensions that have isolated dislocations quenched in by a random arrangement of pinned vortices. The latter are assumed to be sparse and to be fixed to material defects. It is shown that the pinned vortices act to confine a single dislocation of the vortex lattice along its glide plane. Plastic creep of the two-dimensional vortex lattice is thereby impeded, and macroscopic phase coherence results at low temperature in the limit of a dilute concentration of quenched-in dislocations.
Vortices in type-II superconductors have attracted enormous attention as ideal systems in which to study nonequilibrium collective phenomena, since the self-ordering of the vortices competes with quenched disorder and thermal effects. Dynamic effects found in vortex systems include depinning, nonequilibrium phase transitions, creep, structural order-disorder transitions, and melting. Understanding vortex dynamics is also important for applications of superconductors which require the vortices either to remain pinned or to move in a controlled fashion. Recently, topological defects called skyrm…
Understanding the average motion of a multitude of superfluid vortices in the interior of a neutron star is a key ingredient for most theories of pulsar glitches. In this paper we propose a kinetic approach to compute the mutual friction force that is responsible for the momentum exchange between the normal and superfluid components in a neutron star, where the mutual friction is extracted from a suitable average over the motion of many vortex lines. As a first step towards a better modelling of the repinning and depinning processes of many vortex lines in a neutron star, we consider here only…
