We propose a new parametrization of the $B\toπ$ vector form factor, $f_+(q^2)$, as an expansion in powers of a conformal mapping variable, which satisfies unitarity, analyticity and perturbative QCD scaling. The unitarity constraint is used also for defining the systematic error of the expansion. We fit with the new parametrization the available experimental and theoretical information on exclusive $B\toπlν$ decays, making a conservative estimate of the effects of correlations in the systematic and statistical errors of the lattice results. With four parameters to describe $f_+(q^2)$, the systematic error is negligible in the whole semileptonic region. We also obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.54 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-3}$ where, in our approach, the uncertainty is predominantly statistical.
We report on our determination of the values of the one and two loop low energy constants appearing in the Chiral Perturbation Theory calculation of the pi-pi scattering amplitude. For this we use a precise sum rule determination of scattering lengths and slopes that appear in the effective range expansion. In addition we provide new sum rules and the values for these coefficients up to third order in the expansion. Our results when using only the scattering lengths and slopes of the S, P, D and F waves are consistent with previous determinations, but seem to require higher order contributions…
We present a new method for the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element $|V_{tb}|$ from electroweak loop corrections, in particular those affecting the process $Z\to b\bar{b}$. From a combined analysis of results from the LEP, SLC, Tevatron, and neutrino scattering experiments we determine $|V_{tb}| = 0.77^{+0.18}_{-0.24}$. This is the first determination of $|V_{tb}|$ which is independent of unitarity assumptions.
We discuss how to extract the polarized parton densities and fragmentation functions in a model independent way from SIDIS, and present results for D_{u,d,s}^{π^+}.
The magnitudes of the CKM matrix elements $V_{td}$, $V_{ts}$, and $V_{tb}$ are determined for the first time without any assumptions of unitarity. The implications for the unitarity of the CKM matrix as a whole are discussed.
The possibility of detecting a Higgs boson through several production and decay channels is instrumental to the measurement of its couplings. In this paper we study the pp-> ttH(H-> tau tau) channel at the LHC, for the case of a scalar Higgs boson, and use the obtained results to improve on existing strategies toward a model independent determination of the Higgs boson couplings. The case of a scalar Higgs boson with mass below 140 GeV looks particularly promising.
We propose a strategy of the model-independent determination of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ within the framework of the heavy meson effective theory. The effective theory is model-independent, since no assumption on the dynamics is introduced except for the symmetry of QCD. Although the effective theory can only be applied to the decay process with soft pions, high detection efficiency on the soft pions in the future B-factories makes this theory effective. The two exclusive processes, $B \rightarrow πl ν$ and $B \rightarrow ππl ν$, are used to determine the value of $|V_{u…
We present a method to compute, by numerical simulations of lattice QCD, the light-cone wave functions which enter exclusive processes at large momentum transfer, such as electromagnetic elastic scatterings, or exclusive semi-leptonic decays as B -> pi (B -> rho) and radiative decays as B -> K* gamma. The method is based on first principles and does not require any model assumption.
All couplings of a new heavy gauge boson to ordinary fermions can be determined in a model-independent way at a large $e^+e^-$ collider for large enough statistics. No such determination is possible at LEP 200, however, because its design integrated luminosity is too low for existing and forthcoming limits on $Z'$ interactions. At any rate, it should be possible to distinguish between models for $Z'$ masses $< 1\ TeV$, or to set limits of this order on $Z'$ masses for definite models. These are (preliminary) $1σ$ limits. We neglect systematic errors and assume an integrated luminosity of $0.5\…
The decay distribution of the kinematic variable ξ_u in inclusive charmless semileptonic decays of B mesons is unique. The novel method for a model-independent determination of |V_{ub}| is described.
It is shown that measuring the lepton invariant mass spectrum in inclusive semileptonic B -> X_u l nu decay yields a model independent determination of |V_{ub}|. Unlike the lepton energy and hadronic invariant mass spectra, nonperturbative effects are only important in the resonance region, and play a parametrically suppressed role when dΓ/dq^2 is integrated over q^2 > (m_B-m_D)^2, which is required to eliminate the charm background. Perturbative and nonperturbative corrections are presented to order α_s^2β_0 and Λ_{QCD}^2/m_b^2, and the Λ_{QCD}^3/m_b^3 corrections are used to estimate the unc…
We present nonperturbative, model-independent parametrizations of the individual QCD form factors relevant to B -> D* l nu and B -> D l nu decays. These results follow from dispersion relations and analyticity, without recourse to heavy quark symmetry. To describe a form factor with two percent accuracy, three parameters are necessary, one of which is its normalization at zero recoil, F(1). We combine the individual form factors using heavy quark symmetry to extract values for the product |V_{cb}| F(1) from B -> D* l nu data with negligible extrapolation uncertainty.
The coherence factor and average strong phase difference of D0 and D0bar decay amplitudes to the same final state play an important role in the precision determination of the CKM parameter gamma using B- -> DK- and related decay modes. So far, this important input from the charm sector could only be obtained from measurements based on quantum-correlated DDbar pairs produced at the charm threshold. We propose to constrain these parameters using charm mixing, using the large charm samples available at the B factories and LHCb. We demonstrate for the example of D0->Kpipipi that a substantial impr…
We show how a measurement of the process pp-->t tbar H + X at the LHC and a measurement of the Higgs boson branching ratios BR(H-->b bar) and BR(H-->W+W-) at a future linear electron positron collider can be combined to extract a model-independent measurement of the top quark Yukawa coupling. We find that for 120 GeV < m_H < 200 GeV a measurement precision of 15% including systematic uncertainties can be achieved for integrated luminosities of 300 fb-1 at the LHC and 500 fb-1 at the LC at a centre-of-mass energy of 350 GeV.
The model-independent determination of the Higgs-boson CP properties at the Photon Collider at TESLA has been studied in detail, for masses between 200 and 350 GeV, using realistic luminosity spectra and detector simulation. We consider a generic model with the CP violating Higgs tensor couplings to gauge bosons. We introduce a new variable describing angular distributions of the secondary WW and ZZ decay products which is very sensitive to the CP properties of the Higgs-boson. Understanding of the detector performance turns out to be crucial, as the influence of the acceptance corrections is …
We study the impact of different theoretical descriptions of top quark pair production on top quark mass measurements in the di-lepton channel. To this aim, the full NLO corrections to $pp\rightarrow W^+W^-b\bar b\rightarrow (e^+ ν_e)\,(μ^- \barν_μ)\,b\bar b$ production are compared to calculations in the narrow width approximation, where the production of a top quark pair is calculated at NLO and combined with three different descriptions of the top quark decay: leading order, next-to-leading order and via a parton shower. The different theory predictions then enter the calibration of templat…
We determine the values of the one- and two-loop low energy constants appearing in the SU(2) Chiral Perturbation Theory calculation of pion-pion scattering. For this we use a recent and precise sum rule determination of some scattering lengths and slopes that appear in the effective range expansion. In addition we provide sum rules for these coefficients up to third order in the expansion. Our results when using only the scattering lengths and slopes of the S, P, D and F waves are consistent with previous determinations, but seem to require higher order contributions if they are to accommodate…
We present a method to compute, by numerical simulations of lattice QCD, the inclusive semileptonic differential decay rates of heavy hadrons and the structure functions which occur in deep inelastic scattering. The method is based on first principles and does not require any model assumption. It allows the prediction of the differential rate in B semileptonic decays for values of the recoiling hadronic mass W ~ sqrt(M_B Lambda_QCD), which is in the relevant region to extract |V_ub| from the end-point of the lepton spectrum in inclusive decays.
The first part of this report reviews recent developments at the interface between lattice work on QCD with light dynamical quarks, effective field theory and low energy precision experiments. Then I discuss how dispersion theory can be used to analyze the low energy structure of the $ππ$ scattering amplitude in a model independent manner. This leads to an exact formula for the mass and width of the lowest few resonances, in terms of observable quantities. As an application, I consider the pole position of the $σ$, paying particular to error propagation in the numerical analysis. The report is…
We show that the difference cross sections in unpolarized SIDIS e+N\to e+h+X and pp hadron production p+p\to h+X determine, uniquely and in any order in QCD, the two FFs: D_u^{h-\bar h} and D_d^{h-\bar h}, h=π^\pm, K^\pm. If both K^\pm and K_s^0 are measured, then e+e-\to K+X, e+N\to e+K+X and p+p\to K+X yield independent measurements of (D_u-D_d)^{K^+ +K^-}. In a combined fit to K^\pm and K^0_s production data from e+e- collisions, (D_u-D_d)^{K^++K^-} is obtained and compared to conventional parametrizations.
We show that the correction to the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation associated with charge symmetry violation in the valence quark distributions is essentially model independent. It is proportional to a ratio of quark momenta that is independent of Q^2. This result provides a natural explanation of the surprisingly good agreement found between our earlier estimates within several different models. When applied to the recent NuTeV measurement, this effect significantly reduces the discrepancy with other determinations of the Weinberg angle.
In view of new precise measurements of the $\bar B\to D^*\ell \barν$ decay rate near zero recoil, we reconsider the theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of $| V_{cb}|$ using heavy quark symmetry. In particular, we combine our previous estimate of $1/m_Q^2$ corrections to the normalization of the hadronic form factor at zero recoil with sum rules derived by Shifman {\it et al}. to obtain a new prediction with less theoretical uncertainty. We also summarize the status of the calculation of short-distance corrections, and of the slope of the form factor at zero recoil. We find ${\cal F}(1)…
The observation of Higgs pair production at high-energy colliders can give evidence for the presence of a triple Higgs coupling. However, the actual determination of the value of this coupling is more difficult. In the context of general models for new physics, double Higgs production processes can receive contributions from many possible beyond-Standard-Model effects. This dependence must be understood if one is to make a definite statement about the deviation of the Higgs field potential from the Standard Model. In this paper, we study the extraction of the triple Higgs coupling from the pro…
We propose a model independent extraction of the hadronic information needed to determine the photon polarization of the b-> s gamma process by the method utilizing the B -> K1 gamma -> K pi pi gamma angular distribution. We show that exactly the same hadronic information can be obtained by using the B -> J/psi K1 -> J/psi K pi pi channel, which leads to a much higher precision.
We present a model independent procedure for extracting deep-inelastic structure function of "free'' neutron from the electron - deuteron scattering with protons produced in the target fragmentation region of the reaction. This procedure is based on the extrapolation of t, which describes the invariant momentum transfered to the proton, to the unphysical region corresponding to the mass of the struck neutron. We demonstrate that the impulse approximation diagram of the reaction has a pole at this limit with a residue being proportional to the "free" neutron structure function. The method is an…
The total tau hadronic width can be accurately calculated using analyticity and the operator product expansion. The result turns out to be very sensitive to the value of alpha_s(m_tau^2), providing a precise determination of the strong coupling constant. The theoretical description of this observable is updated, including the recently computed O(alpha_s^4) contributions. The experimental determination of alpha_s(m_tau^2) and its actual uncertainties are discussed.
We present results of a lattice computation of the vector and axial-vector current matrix elements relevant for the semileptonic decay B^0-bar -> rho^+ l^- nu_l-bar. The computations are performed in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD on a 24^3 x 48 lattice at beta = 6.2, using an O(a) improved fermionic action. Our principal result is for the differential decay rate, dGamma/dq^2, for the decay B^0-bar -> rho^+ l^- nu_l-bar in a region beyond the charm threshold, allowing a model-independent extraction of |V_{ub}| from experimental measurements. Heavy quark symmetry relations between ra…
We determine the non-perturbative gluon condensate of four-dimensional SU(3) gauge theory in a model independent way. This is achieved by carefully subtracting high order perturbation theory results from non-perturbative lattice QCD determinations of the average plaquette. No indications of dimension two condensates are found. The value of the gluon condensate turns out to be of a similar size as the intrinsic ambiguity inherent to its definition.
A method is described which, under the assumption of SU(3) symmetry, allows one to determine the angle gamma=Arg(Vub^*) of the unitarity triangle from time-independent measurements of the branching ratios for the decays B^+ -> pi^0 K^+ and B^- -> pi^0 K^-, as well as of the CP-averaged branching ratios for the decays B^+- -> pi^+- K^0 and B^+- -> pi^+- pi^0. The effects of electroweak penguin operators are included in a model-independent way, and SU(3)-breaking corrections are accounted for in the factorization approximation.
We study the compositeness of near-threshold states to clarify the internal structure of exotic hadron candidates. Within the framework of effective field theory, we extend the Weinberg's weak-binding relation to include the nearby CDD (Castillejo-Dalitz-Dyson) pole contribution with the help of the Pade approximant. Finally, using the extended relation, we conclude that the CDD pole contribution to the Lambda(1405) baryon in the Kbar N amplitude is negligible.
The quantum statistical parton distributions approach proposed more than one decade ago is revisited by considering a larger set of recent and accurate Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experimental results. It enables us to improve the description of the data by means of a new determination of the parton distributions. We will see that a large gluon polarization emerges, giving a significant contribution to the proton spin.
The entanglement entropy of two-body elastic scattering at high energies is studied by using the model-independent Lévy imaging method for investigating the hadron structure. It is considered the finite entropy in the momentum Hilbert space properly regularized and results are compared to recent evaluation using the diffraction peak approximation. We present the entropy for RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies pointing out the underlying uncertainties.
A guide to the composition of the enigmatic f_0(980) and a_0(980) states is their formation in phi-radiative decays. Precision data are becoming available from the KLOE experiment at the DAPHNE machine at Frascati, as well as results from SND and CMD-2 at VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk. We show how the coupling of the f_0(980) to this channel can be extracted from these, independently of the background provided by sigma production. To do this we use the fact that the behaviour of both the f_0(980) and sigma cannot be determined by these data alone, but is strongly constrained by experimental results f…
To date the magnetic radius of the proton has been determined only by means of electron-proton scattering, which is not free of controversies. Any existing atomic determinations are irrelevant because they are strongly model-dependent. We consider a so-called Zemach contribution to the hyperfine interval in ordinary and muonic hydrogen and derive a self-consistent model-independent value of the magnetic radius of the proton. More accurately, we constrain not a value of the magnetic radius by itself, but its certain combination with the electric-charge radius of the proton, namely, R_E^2+R_M^2.…
A thermal QCD Finite Energy Sum Rule (FESR) is used to obtain the temperature dependence of the axial-vector coupling of the nucleon, $g_{A}(T)$. We find that $g_{A}(T)$ is essentially independent of $T$, in the very wide range $0 \leq T \leq 0.9 T_{c}$, where $T_{c}$ is the critical temperature. While $g_{A}$ at T=0 is $q^{2}$-independent, it develops a $q^{2}$ dependence at finite temperature. We then obtain the mean square radius associated with $g_{A}$ and find that it diverges at $T=T_{c}$, thus signalling quark deconfinement. As a byproduct, we study the temperature dependence of the Gol…
The Migdal effect in a dark-matter-nucleus scattering extends the direct search experiments to the sub-GeV mass region through electron ionization with sub-keV detection thresholds. In this paper, we derive a rigorous and model-independent "Migdal-photoabsorption" relation that links the sub-keV Migdal process to photoabsorption. This relation is free of theoretical uncertainties as it only requires the photoabsorption cross section as the experimental input. Validity of this relation is explicitly checked in the case of xenon with an state-of-the-arts atomic calculation that is well-benchmark…
We propose a model independent method to determine $|V_{ub}|$ from the energy spectrum of the charged lepton in inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays. The method includes perturbative QCD corrections as well as nonperturbative ones.
We obtain a model independent expression for the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift. This expression includes the leading logarithmic ${\cal O}(m_μα^6)$ terms, as well as the leading ${\cal O}(m_μα^5 \frac{m_μ^2}{m_ρ^2})$ hadronic effects. The latter are controlled by the chiral theory, which allows for their model independent determination. In this paper we give the missing piece for their complete expression including the pion and Delta particles. Out of this analysis and the experimental measurement of the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift we determine the electromagnetic proton radius: $r_p=0.8412(15)$ f…
In the commented paper [PRD 78, 034032 (2008); arXiv:0803.2956] Deandrea et al. claim that they provide a model-independent determination of the quantity $B_0(m_d-m_u)$ based on the analysis of the decay of eta to three neutral pions that takes the strong-interaction correction as an unknown parameter. In the following we show that the two constraints presented there as independent equations are in fact two approximations of a single constraint connecting together $B_0(m_d-m_u)$ with the strong-interaction correction to the $η\to3π^0$ decay amplitude. Thus, without some additional information …
The goal of the SIMBA collaboration is to provide a global fit to the available measurements of inclusive B -> X_s gamma and B -> X_u l nu decays. By performing a global fit one is able to simultaneously determine the relevant normalizations, i.e. the total B -> X_s gamma rate and the CKM-matrix element |Vub|, together with the required hadronic parameters, most importantly the b-quark mass and the b-quark distribution function in the B-meson, called the shape function. In this talk, the current status on the model-independent determination of the shape function and |C7^\incl Vtb Vts*|, which …
We evaluate the constraints on anomalous trilinear gauge-boson couplings that can be obtained from the study of electron-positron annihilation into $W$ pairs at a facility with either the electron beam longitudinally polarized or both electron and positron beams transversely polarized. The energy ranges considered in the analysis are the ones relevant to the next-linear collider and to LEP~200. We discuss the possibilities of a model independent analysis of the general $CP$ conserving anomalous effective Lagrangian, as well as its restriction to some specific models with reduced number of inde…
We determine the strange quark running mass of the $\overline{MS}$-scheme by $simulating$ $τ$-$like$ inclusive processes for the $old$ Das-Mathur-Okubo sum rule relating the $e^+e^-$ into $I=0$ and $I=1$ hadrons total cross-sections data. We obtain to three-loop accuracy: $\overline{m}_s$(1 GeV)=($196.7\pm 29.1$) MeV. By combining this result with the pseudoscalar sum rule estimate of $(\overline{m}_d +\overline{m}_u)$ and the standard current algebra values of the light quark mass ratios, we deduce the $average$: $\overline{m}_d$(1 GeV)=$(10.3\pm 1.5)$ MeV, $\overline{m}_u$(1 GeV)=$(5.0\pm 1.…
A brief discussion of the recent lattice studies of the quantities that are relevant to the Standard Model description of CP-violation in the hadronic sector is presented. A comment on B-->K* gamma decay is made too.
Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are one of the leading candidates for Dark Matter. We develop a model-independent method for determining the mass $m_χ$ of the WIMP by using data (i.e., measured recoil energies) of direct detection experiments. Our method is independent of the as yet unknown WIMP density near the Earth, of the form of the WIMP velocity distribution, as well as of the WIMP-nucleus cross section. However, it requires positive signals from at least two detectors with different target nuclei. In a background-free environment, $m_χ\sim 50$ GeV could in principle be dete…
A precision method for determining |Vub| using the full range in q^2 of B-> pi \ell nu data is presented. At large q^2 the form factor is taken from unquenched lattice QCD, at q^2=0 we impose a model independent constraint obtained from B-> pi pi using the soft-collinear effective theory, and the shape is constrained using QCD dispersion relations. We find |Vub| =(3.54\pm 0.17\pm 0.44) x 10^{-3}. With 5% experimental error and 12% theory error, this is competitive with inclusive methods. Theory error is dominated by the input points, with negligible uncertainty from the dispersion relations.
We present a new theoretical framework for the study of $B\to X_u \ell ν$ decays, which includes all known perturbative and non-perturbative contributions and a description of leading and subleading Fermi motion effects. The perturbative and non-perturbative regimes are separated by a ``hard'' Wilsonian cutoff $μ\sim 1$ GeV. We bring into focus some problems related to the high $q^2$ region and to Weak Annihilation effects. We provide estimates of the CKM parameter $|V_{ub}|$ using the described framework and discuss the related theoretical uncertainty.
We present a halo-independent determination of the unmodulated signal corresponding to the DAMA modulation if interpreted as due to dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). First we show how a modulated signal gives information on the WIMP velocity distribution function in the Galactic rest frame, from which the unmodulated signal descends. Then we perform a mathematically-sound profile likelihood analysis in which we profile the likelihood over a continuum of nuisance parameters (namely, the WIMP velocity distribution). As a first application of the method, which is very gene…
We present a relativistic and model-independent method to derive structure-dependent electromagnetic finite-size effects. This is a systematic procedure, particularly well-suited for automatization, which works at arbitrarily high orders in the large-volume expansion. Structure-dependent coefficients appear as zero-momentum derivatives of physical form factors which can be obtained through experimental measurements or auxiliary lattice calculations. As an application we derive the electromagnetic finite-size effects on the pseudoscalar meson mass and leptonic decay amplitude, through orders $\…
The atomic pair 163 Holmium and 163 Dysprosium seems due to the small Q value of about 2.3 to 2.8 keV the best case to determine the neutrino mass by electron capture. The bolometer spectrum measures the full deexcitation energy of Dysprosium by X rays, by Auger electrons and by the recoil of Holmium. The spectrum has an upper energy limit given by the Q value minus the neutrino mass. Till now this spectrum has been calculated allowing in Dysprosium excitations with 3s1/2, 3p1/2, 4s1/2, 4p1/2, 5s1/2, 5p1/2 one-holes only. Robertson calculated recently also the spectrum with two electron hole e…
Thermal dark matter at the MeV mass-scale has its abundance set during the highly non-trivial epochs of neutrino decoupling and electron annihilation. The technical obstacles attached to solving Boltzmann equations of multiple interacting sectors being both relativistic and non-relativistic have to-date prevented the full treatment of this problem. Here, for the first time, we calculate the freeze-out of light dark matter, taking into account the energy transfer between the dark sector, neutrinos, and the electromagnetically interacting plasma from annihilation and elastic scattering processes…
We derive model-independent bounds on the form factors for the decay $B_c^+ \to η_c\, \ell^+\, ν$ including full mass effects, i.e. $\ell = e,\, μ, \text{ and } τ$. The bounds are obtained by using the BGL parameterization for the form factors, and fitting to the preliminary lattice data of the HPQCD Collaboration. Our main result after bounding the form factors is the Standard Model (SM) prediction for the ratio of branching fractions $R(η_c) = \mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \to η_c\, τ^+\, ν_τ) / \mathcal{B}(B_c^+ \to η_c\, μ^+\, ν_μ)$. We find $R(η_c)|_{\text{SM}} = 0.31^{+0.04}_{-0.02}$, and argue that…
We apply a model-independent reconstruction method to experimental data in order to identify complex poles of overlapping resonances. The algorithm is based on the Schlessinger Point Method where data points are interpolated using a continued-fraction expression. Statistical uncertainties of the experimental data are propagated with resampling. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of this method, we apply it to the $S$-wave $J/ψ\to γπ^0π^0$ decay. We benchmark the method on known analytic models, which allows us to estimate the deviation from the true value. We then perform the pole extract…
Model-independent reactor isotopic cross sections per fission are determined by global fits of the reactor antineutrino data from High-Enriched Uranium (HEU) reactor rates, Low-Enriched Uranium (LEU) reactor rates, and reactor fuel evolution data. Taking account of the implicit quasi-linear relationship between the fission fractions of $^{239}\rm{Pu}$ and $^{241}\rm{Pu}$ in the LEU reactor data, the Inverse-Beta-Decay (IBD) yields and their correlations of the fissionable isotopes $^{235}\rm{U}$, $^{238}\rm{U}$, and Pu's are obtained. The data-driven isotopic IBD yields provide an anomaly-free…
We develop a new method in lattice QCD to calculate the form factor F(1) at zero recoil. This is the main theoretical ingredient needed to determine |V(cb)| from the exclusive decay anti-B --> D* lepton anti-neutrino. We introduce three ratios, in which most of statistical and systematic error cancels, making a precise calculation possible. We fit the heavy-quark mass dependence directly, and extract the 1/m_Q^2 and three of the four 1/m_Q^3 corrections in the heavy-quark expansion. In this paper we show how the method works in the quenched approximation, obtaining F(1) = 0.913 (+0.024-0.017)(…
Determining the dark matter (DM) mass is of paramount importance for understanding dark matter. We present a novel parametrization of the DM speed distribution which will allow the DM mass to be accurately measured using data from Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) direct detection experiments. Specifically, we parametrize the natural logarithm of the speed distribution as a polynomial in the speed v. We demonstrate, using mock data from upcoming experiments, that by fitting the WIMP mass and interaction cross-section, along with the polynomial coefficients, we can accurately reconstru…
In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. D 83, 113013 (2011)] we have shown that the solar sector data (solar and KamLAND) are sensitive to the parameter theta_14, encoding the admixture of the electron neutrino with a fourth (essentially) sterile mass eigenstate. In that work we evidenced that such data prefer a non-zero value of theta_14 and that such a preference is completely degenerate with that of non-zero theta_13. In this report we show how the evidence of theta_13 > 0, recently emerged from global neutrino data analyses, lifts such a degeneracy and disfavors the case of sterile neutrino mixing…
We obtain a model-independent prediction for the two-photon exchange contribution to the hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen. We use the relation of the Wilson coefficients of the spin-dependent dimension-six four-fermion operator of NRQED applied to the electron-proton and to the muon-proton sectors. Their difference can be reliably computed using chiral perturbation theory, whereas the Wilson coefficient of the electron-proton sector can be determined from the hyperfine splitting in hydrogen. This allows us to give a precise model-independent determination of the Wilson coefficient for th…
Quasielastic neutrino-nucleon scattering is a basic signal process for neutrino oscillation studies. At accelerator energies, the corresponding cross section is subject to significant uncertainty due to the poorly constrained axial-vector form factor of the nucleon. A model-independent description of the axial-vector form factor is presented. Data from the MiniBooNE experiment for quasielastic neutrino scattering on carbon are analyzed under the assumption of a definite nuclear model. The value of the axial mass parameter, m_A=0.85^{+0.22}_{-0.07} +/- 0.09 GeV, is found to differ significantly…
Based on reflection symmetry in the reaction plane, it is shown that measuring the transverse spin-transfer coefficient $K_{yy}$ in the $\bar{K}N \to KΞ$ reaction directly determines the parity of the produced cascade hyperon in a model-independent way as $π_Ξ=K_{yy}$, where $π_Ξ=\pm 1$ is the parity. This result based on Bohr's theorem provides a completely general, universal relationship that applies to the entire hyperon spectrum. A similar expression is obtained for the photoreaction $γN \to K K Ξ$ by measuring both the double-polarization observable $K_{yy}$ and the photon-beam asymmetry …
