We estimate the single-spin asymmetries (SSA) which provide the access to transversity as well as to Boer-Mulders and Sivers PDFs via investigation of the single-polarized Drell-Yan (DY) processes with $ pp$, $pD$ and $DD$ collisions available to RHIC, NICA, COMPASS, and J-PARC. The feasibility of these SSA is studied with the new generator of polarized DY events. The performed estimations demonstrate that there exist the such kinematical regions where SSA are presumably measurable. The most useful for PDFs extraction are the limiting kinematical ranges, where one can neglect the sea PDFs contributions which occur at large values of Bjorken x. It is of interest that on the contrary to the Sivers PDF, the transversity PDF is presumably accessible only in the especial kinematical region. On the contrary to the option with the symmetric collider mode (RHIC, NICA), this is of importance for the COMPASS experiment and the future J-PARC facility where the fixed target mode is available.
We consider the leading and sub-leading twist $T$-odd and even contributions to the $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized dilepton production in Drell-Yan Scattering and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of pions.
The Drell-Yan (DY) processes with unpolarized colliding hadrons and with the single transversally polarized hadron are considered. The possibility of direct (without any model assumptions) extraction of both transversity and its accompanying T-odd parton distribution functions (PDF) is discussed. For DY processes measurements planned at GSI the preliminary estimations demonstrate that it is quite real to extract both transversity and its accompanying T-odd PDF in the PAX conditions.
It is studied the possibility of direct extraction of the transversity and its accompanying T-odd parton distribution function (PDF) from Drell-Yan (DY) processes with unpolarized pion beam and with both unpolarized and transversely polarized proton targets. At present, such a measurement can be performed on the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The preliminary estimations performed for COMPASS kinematic region demonstrate that it is quite real to extract both transversity and its accompanying T-odd PDF in the COMPASS conditions
A review is given on single spin asymmetries in deep inelastic semi-inclusive scattering (SIDIS) and their possible theoretical understanding in the framework of QCD-induced factorization approach, wherefore predictions for transversity from the chiral quark soliton model are used. Arising difficulties to interpret most recent SIDIS data, and the possibility to access the transversity distribution in the Drell-Yan process are discussed.
Estimates are given for the double spin asymmetry in lepton-pair production from collisions of transversely polarized protons and antiprotons for the kinematics of the recently proposed PAX experiment at GSI on the basis of predictions for the transversity distribution from the chiral quark soliton model.
The Drell-Yan $K$-factors for transversely polarised hadrons are examined. Since transverse spin is peculiar in having no DIS reference point, the effects of higher-order corrections on DY asymmetries are examined via a DIS definition for transversity devised using a hypothetical scalar vertex. The results suggest that some care may be required when interpreting experimentally extracted partonic transversity, particularly when comparing with model calculations or predictions.

The question of the K factor in transversely polarised Drell-Yan (DY) processes is examined. The transverse-spin case is peculiar for the absence of a reference point in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS). Therefore, in order to study more fully the possible effects of higher-order corrections on DY asymmetries, a DIS definition for transversity is devised using a hypothetical scalar (Higgs-like) vertex. The results show that some care may be required in interpreting experimentally extracted partonic transversity, in particular when comparing with model calculations or predictions.
We consider the leading twist $T$-odd contributions as the dominant source of the azimuthal and transverse single spin asymmetries in SIDIS and dilepton production in Drell-Yan Scattering. These asymmetries contain information on the distribution of quark transverse spin in (un)polarized protons. In the spectator framework we estimate these asymmetries at HERMES kinematics and at $50\ {\rm GeV}$ for the proposed experiments at GSI, where an anti-proton beam is ideal for studying the transversity properties of quarks due to the dominance of {\em valence} quark effects.
The unpolarized, helicity and transversity distributions of quarks in the proton are calculated in the overlap representation of light-cone wavefunctions truncated to the lowest order Fock-space components with three valence quarks. The three distributions at the hadronic scale satisfy an interesting relation consistent with the Soffer inequality. Results are derived in a relativistic quark model including radiative corrections up to the next-to-leading order. Predictions for the double transverse-spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan dilepton production initiated by proton-antiproton collisions are pre…
Within the framework of light-cone quantization we derive the overlap representation of generalized parton distributions for transversely polarized quarks using the Fock-state decomposition in the transverse-spin basis. We apply this formalism to the case of light-cone wave functions in a constituent quark model giving numerical results for the four chiral-odd generalized parton distributions in a region where they describe the emission and reabsorption of a quark by the nucleon. With the transversity distribution obtained in the forward limit of the generalized distribution, we provide some p…
The proton's transversity distribution will be measured at BNL's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in upcoming experiments using the transverse Drell-Yan process. Understanding the one-loop corrections is therefore important. Here, the collinear structure in transverse Drell-Yan is investigated in detail using dimensional regularization and the correct behaviour is found, although the mechanism is non-trivial. The resulting n-dimensional transversity splitting function (and consequently the one-loop transversity distribution and its two-loop evolution) is found to be the same in both the anticom…
We study double transverse spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process at measured transverse momentum of the lepton pair. Contrary to what a collinear factorization approach would suggest, a nonzero double transverse spin asymmetry in the laboratory frame a priori does not imply nonzero transversity. TMD effects, such as the double Sivers effect, in principle form a background. Using the current knowledge of the relevant TMDs we estimate their contribution in the laboratory frame for Drell-Yan and W production at RHIC and point out a cross check asymmetry measurement to bound the TMD contributi…
The gluon transversity distribution in the deuteron is defined by the matrix element between linearly-polarized deuteron states, and it could be investigated in proton-deuteron collisions in addition to lepton-deuteron scattering. The linear polarization of photon is often used, whereas it is rarely used for the spin-1 deuteron. Therefore, it is desirable to express deuteron-reaction cross sections in term of conventional deuteron spin polarizations for actual experimental measurements. In this work, we investigate how proton-deuteron Drell-Yan cross sections are expressed by the conventional …
The complete knowledge of the nucleon spin structure at leading twist requires also addressing the transverse spin distribution of quarks, or transversity, which is yet unexplored because of its chiral-odd nature. Transversity can be best extracted from single-spin asymmetries in fully polarized Drell-Yan processes with antiprotons, where valence contributions are involved anyway. Alternatively, in single-polarized Drell-Yan the transversity happens convoluted with another chiral-odd function, which is likely to be responsible for the well known (and yet unexplained) violation of the Lam-Tung …
We present a new analysis to extract pion parton distribution functions (PDFs) within the framework of the statistical model. Starting from the statistical model first developed for the spin-1/2 nucleon, we extend this model to describe the spin-0 pion. Based on a combined fit to both the pion-induced Drell-Yan data and the pion-induced $J/Ψ$ production data, a new set of pion PDFs has been obtained. The inclusion of the $J/Ψ$ production data in the combined fit has provided additional constraints for better determining the gluon distribution in the pion. We also compare the pion PDFs obtained…
In this paper, we extend the study of Drell-Yan processes with antiproton beams already presented in a previous work. We consider the fully polarized $\bar{p}^\uparrow p^\uparrow \to μ^+ μ^- X$ process, because this is the simplest scenario for extracting the transverse spin distribution of quarks, or transversity, which is the missing piece to complete the knowledge of the nucleon spin structure at leading twist. We perform Monte Carlo simulations for transversely polarized antiproton and proton beams colliding at a center-of-mass energy of interest for the future HESR at GSI. The goal is to …
Nucleon spin structure functions have been investigated mainly by longitudinally-polarized ones for finding the origin of the nucleon spin. Other types of spin structure functions are transversely-polarized ones. In particular, quark transversity distributions in the nucleons have very different properties from the longitudinally-polarized quark distribution functions, especially in scaling violation, because they are decoupled from the gluon transversity, due to the fact that they are helicity-flip (chiral-odd) distributions. Such studies are valuable for finding not only the origin of the nu…
Global analyses of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) have provided incisive constraints on the up and down quark components of the proton, but constraining the other flavor degrees of freedom is more challenging. Higher-order theory predictions and new data sets have contributed to recent improvements. Despite these efforts, the strange quark PDF has a sizable uncertainty, particularly in the small x region. We examine the constraints from experiment and theory, and investigate the impact of this uncertainty on LHC observables. In particular, we study W/Z production to see how the s-quark u…
We consider the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) quark densities of the proton which are very important ingredients for unpolarized Drell-Yan (DY) lepton pair production. We calculate the TMD sea quark density as a convolution of the Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM)-evolved gluon distribution and the TMD gluon-to-quark splitting function. Based on the ${\cal O}(α^2)$ production amplitude $q^* + \bar q^* \to Z/γ^* \to l^+ + l^-$, calculated by taking into account the effective $q^*\bar q^* Z/γ^*$ - vertex, we analyze the distributions on the dilepton invariant mass, transverse mome…
We discuss transversity distributions and Drell-Yan transverse double spin asymmetries. First, the antiquark flavor asymmetry $Δ_{_T} \bar u/Δ_{_T} \bar d$ is discussed by using two different descriptions, a meson-cloud model and a Pauli exclusion model. We find that both calculations produce a significant $Δ_{_T} \bar d$ excess over $Δ_{_T} \bar u$. Next, we study its effects on the transverse spin asymmetry $A_{_{TT}}$ and on the Drell-Yan proton-deuteron asymmetry $Δ_{_T}σ^{pd}/2 Δ_{_T}σ^{pp}$. We find that the ratio $Δ_{_T}σ^{pd}/2 Δ_{_T}σ^{pp}$ is very useful for investigating the flavor …
We present a study of the interplay between PDF and EFT effects in high-mass Drell-Yan at the LHC. We quantify the impact of a consistent joint determination of the PDFs and Wilson coefficients on the bounds obtained on the EFT and examine the effect on the PDFs, determining the extent to which EFT signals could be reabsorbed into the large-$x$ quark and anti-quark PDFs. Finally, we present dedicated projections for the High-Luminosity LHC and evaluate its ultimate potential to constrain the EFT parameters, while taking into account potential modifications of the proton structure.
The formalism for uniform description of Drell-Yan transverse-momentum spectrum is presented in a framework of High-Energy Factorization, which smoothly interpolates between Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism at $|{\bf q}_T|\ll Q$ and usual Collinear Parton Model at $|{\bf q}_T|\sim Q\ll \sqrt{S}$. The new formula for deriving Unintegrated Parton Distribution Functions(UPDFs) from collinear ones is introduced, which leads to excellent description of the shape of $Z$-boson $|{\bf q}_T|$-spectrum at high energies up to $|{\bf q}_T|/\sqrt{S}\simeq 0.02$. Description of normalized $|{\bf q}_T|$-distr…
The high-energy tails of charged- and neutral-current Drell-Yan processes provide important constraints on the light quark and anti-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the large-x region. At the same time, short-distance new physics effects such as those encoded by the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) would induce smooth distortions to the same high-energy Drell-Yan tails. In this work, we assess for the first time the interplay between PDFs and EFT effects for high-mass Drell-Yan processes at the LHC and quantify the impact that the consistent joint determination of PDF…
The high statistics that will be collected during the LHC Run-II (and beyond) open the path to precision measurements at the TeV scale, where the PDFs will play a crucial role in BSM searches. In the di-lepton final state accurate measurements of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry (AFB) will be available, particularly in the invariant mass region around the Z peak. We show that this observable displays a statistical error which is competitive with that assigned to the existing PDF sets and which will rapidly become smaller than the latter as the integrated luminosity grows, thereby offering a mean…
Dimuon production has been studied in a series of fixed-target experiments at Fermilab during the last two decades. Highlights from these experiments, together with recent results from the Fermilab E866 experiment, are presented. Future prospects for studying the parton distributions in the nucleons and nuclei using dimuon production are also discussed.
We present next-to-leading order predictions for double transverse-spin asymmetries in Drell--Yan dilepton production initiated by proton--antiproton scattering. The kinematic region of the proposed PAX experiment at GSI: $30\lesssim{s}\lesssim200\GeV^2$ and $2\lesssim{M}\lesssim7\GeV$ is examined. The Drell--Yan asymmetries turn out to be large, in the range 20--40%. Measuring these asymmetries would provide the cleanest determination of the quark transversity distributions.
We perform a NLO numerical study of the double transverse-spin asymmetries in the $J/ψ$ resonance region for proton--antiproton collisions. We analyze the large $x$ kinematic region, relevant for the proposed PAX experiment at GSI, and discuss the implication of the results for the extraction of the transversity densities.
The feasibility of measuring chiral-odd parton distribution functions in polarized Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive experiments has renewed theoretical interest in their study. Models of hadron structure have proven succesful in describing the gross features of the chiral-even structure functions. Similar expectations support our study of the transversity parton distributions in the Isgur-Karl and MIT bag models. We confirm the diverse low x behavior of the transversity and spin structure functions at the experimental scale and show that it is fundamentally a consequence of the different behavior …
Some general remarks on parton transverse spin distributions and transverse motions are presented. The issue of accessing experimental information on the transversity distributions h_1^q is discussed. In particular direct information could be obtained from Drell-Yan processes with polarized protons and antiprotons (planned at GSI), while indirect information, coupling h_1^q to the Collins fragmentation function, is being gathered by HERMES and COMPASS collaborations. The related issue of transverse Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) measured in several processes and the role of the Sivers distribut…
We show that the observation of the Drell-Yan production of low-mass lepton-pairs (M < 20 GeV) at high rapidities (Y > 3) at the LHC can make a direct measurement of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the low x region, x < 10^{-4}. We describe a procedure that greatly reduces the sensitivity of the predictions to the choice of the factorization scale and, in particular, show how, by imposing a cutoff on the transverse momentum of the lepton-pair, the data are able to probe PDFs in the important low scale, low x domain. We include the effects of the Sudakov suppression factor.
First, we show how to reduce the sensitivity of the NLO predictions of the Drell-Yan production of low-mass, lepton-pairs, at high rapidity, to the choice of factorization scale. In this way, observations of this process at the LHC can make direct measurements of parton distribution functions in the low x domain; x < 10^{-4}. Second, we find an inconsistency in the conventional NLO treatment of the infrared region. We illustrate the problem using the NLO coefficient function of Drell-Yan production.
We show that measurements of the forward-backward charge asymmetry ($A_{FB}(M,y)$) of Drell-Yan dilepton events produced at hadron colliders provide a new powerful tool to constrain Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). PDF uncertainties are the dominant source of systematic error in precision measurements at hadron colliders (e.g. $χ^2$ values of fits to extract $\sin^2θ_{eff}^{lept}(M_Z)$ from $A_{FB}(M,y)$ with different PDF replicas can be used to place additional constraints on PDFs.In turn, using these constrained PDFs significantly reduces the PDF errors in precision measurements of ele…
We consider the leading twist $T$-odd contributions as the dominant source of the $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized $p\bar{p}\to μμ^+ X$ dilepton production in Drell-Yan Scattering. This asymmetry contains information on the distribution of quark transverse spin in an unpolarized proton. In a parton-spectator framework we estimate these asymmetries at $50 {\rm GeV}$ center of mass energy. This azimuthal asymmetry is interesting in light of proposed experiments at GSI, where an anti-proton beam is ideal for studying the transversity properties of quarks due to the dominance of {\em v…
We consider two different spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes generated by the collisions of an unpolarized proton beam on transversely polarized protons: the muon helicity asymmetry and the left-right asymmetry. We calculate the asymmetries in the framework of the QCD improved parton model, taking into account the parton transverse momentum and considering the first order QCD corrections. The muon helicity asymmetry is sensitive to the quark transversity distribution and is nonvanishing even at zero order. On the contrary the left-right asymmetry vanishes at zero order but not at first or…
We study the $\sin2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in the $πN$ Drell-Yan process, when the nucleon is longitudinally polarized. The asymmetry is contributed by the combination of the Boer-Mulders function and the longitudinal transversity distribution function. We consider the Drell-Yan processes by $π^\pm$ beams colliding on the proton and deuteron targets, respectively. We calculate the $\sin2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries in these processes using the Boer-Mulders function and the longitudinal transversity from spectator models. We show that the study on single polarized $πN$ Drell-Yan processes can not on…
We reanalyze the anomalous angular distribution of lepton pairs produced in a pion-induced Drell-Yan process by taking into account the Glauber gluon effect in the $k_T$ factorization theorem. Compared to the previous study, we adopt the realistic parton distribution functions (PDFs) for a proton from the CTEQ and for a pion from the xFitter, include the QCD evolutions of the strong coupling and the PDFs, and integrate the differential cross section over the kinematic regions for the NA10, E615 and COMPASS experiments. These improvements then allow rigorous confrontations of theoretical result…
We have studied the prospects of using the Drell-Yan dilepton process in pion-nucleus collisions as a novel input in the global analysis of nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs). In a NLO QCD framework, we find the measured nuclear cross-section ratios from the NA3, NA10 and E615 experiments to be largely insensitive to the pion parton distributions and also compatible with the EPS09 and nCTEQ15 nPDFs. These data sets can thus be, and in EPPS16 have been, included in global nPDF analyses without introducing significant new theoretical uncertainties or tension with the other data. In pa…
We study the cross section σand Forward-Backward asymmetry A_{FB} in the process pp \to γ^*,Z \to \ell^+\ell^- (with \ell=e,μ) for determinations of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) of the proton. We show that, once mapped in the invariant mass of the di-lepton final state, M({\ell\ell}), both observables, σand A_{FB}, display a statistical error which is presently competitive with that assigned to the existing PDF sets and which will rapidly become smaller than the latter as the luminosity being accumulated at Run-II of the LHC grows. This statement is applicable to both on-peak and off-p…
We investigate the transverse momentum weighted Sivers asymmetries in the processes with transversely polarized proton target, including the $\frac{P_{hT}}{zM_p}\sin (ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ weighted asymmetry in charged hadron production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and the $\frac{q_T}{M_p}\sin (ϕ_S)$ weighted asymmetry in $π^- p$ Drell-Yan process. Due to the integration over the transverse momentum, the weighted asymmetries can be expressed as the product of the transverse-moments of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation fu…
We discuss the double-spin asymmetries in transversely polarized Drell-Yan process, calculating all-order gluon resummation corrections up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. This resummation is relevant when the transverse-momentum $Q_T$ of the produced lepton pair is small, and reproduces the (fixed-order) next-to-leading QCD corrections upon integrating over $Q_T$. The resummation corrections in $p\bar{p}$-collision behave differently compared with $pp$-collision cases, and are small at the kinematics in the proposed GSI experiments. This fact allows us to predict large value of th…
We discuss the relation between the ratio of the proton-deuteron (pd) Drell-Yan cross section to the proton-proton (pp) one Δ_{(T)} σ_{pd}/2 Δ_{(T)} σ_{pp} and the flavor asymmetry in polarized light-antiquark distributions. Using a recent formalism of the polarized pd Drell-Yan process, we show that the difference between the pp and pd cross sections is valuable for finding not only the flavor asymmetry in longitudinally polarized antiquark distributions but also the one in transversity distributions. It is especially important that we point out the possibility of measuring the flavor asymmet…

We discuss the double-spin asymmetry \aqt in the transversely polarized Drell-Yan process at small transverse-momentum Q_T of the produced dilepton. The soft gluon corrections relevant for small Q_T are resummed to all orders in α_s, up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We show that the soft gluon corrections largely cancel in the spin asymmetry, but the significant corrections still remain. The asymmetries \aqt are calculated for pp collision at RHIC and J-PARC, and for p\bar{p} collision at GSI. A novel asymptotic formula for \aqt at small Q_T is presented, which provides a new app…
It is studied the model on J/psi production allowing to extract parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the combined analysis with both data on Drell-Yan and J/psi production processes. It is shown that this, so attractive from theoretical point of view, model, can be safely used in the low energy region E<100 GeV. The significance of gluon contributions to the J/psi cross-sections is investigated. The obtained results in the high energy region occur to be rather surprising.
We address the impact of future measurements of charged and neutral current Drell-Yan (DY) asymmetries and their combination on Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) uncertainties. We quantify the reduction of PDF uncertainties using the QCD tool xFitter. We examine the effects of such reduced PDF errors on both Standard Model (SM) and Beyond SM (BSM) observables.
We present a leading order (LO) estimate for the longitidinal-transverse spin asymmetry (A_{LT}) in the nucleon-nucleon polarized Drell-Yan process at RHIC and HERA-$\vec{N}$ energies in comparison with A_{LL} and A_{TT}. A_{LT} receives contribution from g_1, the transversity ditribution h_1, and the twist-3 distributions g_T and h_L. For the twist-3 contribution we use the bag model prediction evolved to a high energy scale by the large-N_c evolution equation. We found that A_{LT} (normalized by the asymmetry in the parton level) is much smaller than the corresponding A_{TT}. Twist-3 contrib…
We discuss our recent study of the impact of collinear PDFs and their uncertainties on the determination of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions and the description of Drell-Yan (DY) production measurements at low transverse momenta. Using QCD factorization and evolution in transverse coordinate b space, this study takes into account for the first time flavor-dependent non-perturbative b-profiles. It illustrates that collinear PDF uncertainties and non-perturbative TMD flavor dependence are both essential to obtain reliable TMD determinations.
We discuss the double-spin asymmetries in transversely polarized Drell-Yan process, calculating all-order gluon resummation corrections up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. This resummation is relevant when the transverse-momentum Q_T of the produced lepton pair is small, and reproduces the (fixed-order) next-to-leading QCD corrections upon integrating over Q_T. The resummation corrections behave differently between pp- and p\bar{p}-collision cases and are small for the latter case at the kinematics in the proposed GSI experiments. This fact allows us to predict large value of the d…
We discuss the Drell-Yan proton-deuteron (p-d) asymmetry R_{pd}, which is defined by the proton-proton and proton-deuteron cross-section ratio Δ_{(T)}σ^{pd}/2Δ_{(T)}σ^{pp}, and its relation to the polarized light-antiquark flavor asymmetry. Using a formalism of the polarized {\it pd} Drell-Yan process, we show that the R_{pd} especially in the large-x_F region is very useful for finding the flavor asymmetry in the longitudinally-polarized and transversity distributions. Our results are particularly important to study the flavor asymmetry in the transversity distributions because they cannot be…
The longitudinal-transverse spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in the polarized Drell-Yan process depends on twist-3 quark distributions of nucleon. In addition to the contributions associated with the twist-3 operators, these distributions contain the "Wandzura-Wilczek (WW)" part, which is determined by a certain integral of twist-2 distributions. The recently obtained empirical information on the transversity allows a realistic estimate of the WW contribution to $A_{LT}$ for the polarized $p\bar{p}$ collisions. Our results indicate that rather large $A_{LT}$ ($\sim 10$%) can be observed in the proposed…
