We study the one-dimensional S=1 Blume-Emery-Griffiths model. Upon transforming the spin model into an equivalent fermionic model, we provide the exact solution within the Green's function and equations of motion formalism. We show that the relevant response functions as well as thermodynamic quantities can be determined, in the whole parameters space, in terms of a finite set of local correlators. Furthermore, considering the case of an antiferromagnetic chain with single-ion anisotropy in the presence of an external magnetic field, we find three plateaus in the magnetization curve; in the neighborhood of the endpoints of the intermediate plateau, the specific heat shows a double peak structure.
We analyze the thermal conductivity of frustrated spin-1/2 chains within linear-response theory focusing on its frequency dependence at finite temperatures. Using exact diagonalization, the low-frequency limit of the thermal conductivity is discussed in the high-temperature regime.
Transport quantities of the classical spin chain with the quenched disorder in the antiferromagnetic coupling $J_i$ are evaluated using the dynamical simulation at finite temperatures $T>0$ . Since the classical model is nonintegrable, spin and thermal conductivities remain finite even in the pure case. On the other hand, the role of disorder becomes crucial at low $T $ leading to a vanishing transport due to the Anderson localization within the linearized regime. The crossover from the insulator to the conductor appears both for the spin and thermal transport at quite low $T^* \ll J$. Still t…
We report measurements of the specific heat and the thermal conductivity of the model Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain cuprate Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{3}$ at low temperatures. In addition to a nearly isotropic phonon heat transport, we find a quasi one-dimensional excess thermal conductivity along the chain direction, most likely associated with spin excitations (spinons). The spinon energy current is limited mainly by scattering on defects and phonons. Analyzing the specific heat data, the intrachain magnetic exchange $J/k_{B}$ is estimated to be 2650 K.
We have measured the thermal conductivity along different directions of the S = 1/2 one-dimensional (1D) spin system Sr2V3O9 in magnetic fields up to 14 T. It has been found that the thermal conductivity along the [10-1] direction, \k{appa}[10-1], is large and markedly suppressed by the application of magnetic field, indicating that there is a large contribution of spinons to \k{appa}[10-1] and that the spin chains run along the [10-1] direction. The maximum value of the thermal conductivity due to spinons is ~14 W/Km along the [10-1] direction, supporting the empirical law that the magnitude …
Theory of Hall transport of spins in a correlated paramagnetic phase is developed. By identifying the thermal Hall current operator in the spin language, which turns out to equal the spin chirality in the pure Heisenberg model, various response functions can be derived straightforwardly. Subsequent reduction to the Schwinger boson representation of spins allows a convenient calculation of thermal and spin Hall coefficients in the paramagnetic regime using self-consistent mean-field theory. Com- parison is made to results from the Holstein-Primakoff reduction of spin operators appropriate for o…
We investigate the thermal properties of circular semiconductor quantum dots in high magnetic fields using finite temperature Hartree-Fock techniques. We demonstrate that for a given magnetic field strength quantum dots undergo various shape phase transitions as a function of temperature, and we outline possible observable consequences.
Thermal conductivity measurements have been carried out for single crystals of the onedimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic (AF) Ising-like spin system ACoX3 (A = Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br). A shoulder originating from the thermal conductivity due to spin excitations, \k{appa}?spin, has been observed around 60 K in the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity along the c-axis parallel to spin chains for every ACoX3. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of ?\k{appa}spin in 1D AF Ising-like spin systems. It has been found that the magnitude of ?\k{appa}spin in ACoX3 is a little smalle…
The quasi two-dimensional magnetic BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is studied by using high-resolution thermal expansion in magnetic fields up to 10 T applied along the c-axis. A slight increase of about 1 % of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_N$ is observed at 10 T. Positive and negative pressure dependencies of $T_N$, respectively, are inferred from the thermal expansion $α(T)$ for pressures applied along the $a$- and $c$-axes.
We study the dynamical thermal conductivity of the Kitaev spin model on a two-leg ladder. In contrast to conventional integrable one-dimensional spin systems, we show that heat transport is completely dissipative. This is a direct consequence of fractionalization of spins into mobile Majorana matter and a static $Z_{2}$ gauge field, which acts as an emergent thermally activated disorder. Our finding rests on three complementary calculations of the current correlation function, comprising a phenomenological mean-field treatment of thermal gauge fluctuations, a complete summation over all gauge …
Precise thermal expansion and magnetostriction studies of the intermetallic compound Eu$_2$CuSi$_3$ in the temperature range between 5 and 300 K are presented. A clear sign of magnetic second order phase transition at the ferromagnetic Curie temperature $T_{\rm C}$ = 34 K indicates strong magneto-structural coupling. Uniaxial thermal expansion data show a large anisotropy between the magnetic easy $c$-axis and the hexagonal $ab$-plane, which is associated with a strongly anisotropic magnetic coupling. A spin-reorientation regime as well as a non-uniform energy scale are indicated by Grüneisen …
We theoretically study the intrinsic thermal Hall and spin Nernst effect in collinear ferrimagnets on a honeycomb lattice with broken inversion symmetry. The broken inversion symmetry allows in-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the nearest neighbors, which does not affect the magnon spectrum in the linear spin wave theory. However, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can induce large Berry curvature in the magnetoelastic excitation spectrum through the magnon-phonon interaction to produce thermal Hall current. Furthermore, we find that the magnetoelastic excitations transport s…
We have measured the thermal conductivity of the geometrically frustrated quasi-onedimensional spin system Cu$_3$Mo$_2$O$_9$ in magnetic fields. A contribution of the thermal conductivity due to spins has been observed in the thermal conductivity along the spin chains. The thermal conductivity due to phonons, $κ_{\rm phonon}$, has been found to decrease by the application of a magnetic field, which has been explained as being due to the reduction in the spin gap originating from the spin-singlet dimers. Moreover, it has been found that $κ_{\rm phonon}$ increases with increasing field in high f…
We have measured the thermal conductivity along the c-axis, \k{appa}||c, parallel to ferromagnetic spin-chains of single crystals of the S = 1/2 quasi-one-dimensional spin system CsCuCl3 in magnetic fields up to 14 T, in order to investigate the thermal conductivity due to spins, \k{appa}spin, and the change of thermal conductivity corresponding to the change of the spin state. In the temperature dependence of \k{appa}||c, no contribution of \k{appa}spin has been observed, while a dip has been observed at the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature, TN. Furthermore, it has been found th…
Recent experiments on Kitaev spin liquid candidate materials reported non-monotonic behavior of thermal conductivity as a function of magnetic field, which lead to conflicting interpretations of its origin. Motivated by this development, we study the magnetic field dependence of thermal conductivity of a generalized Kitaev model, which allows the phase transitions between different flux sectors as a function of the magnetic field. The thermal conductivity due to Majorana fermions shows dip-bump structures as the magnetic field increases, which is caused by either the transitions between differ…
We report high magnetic field thermal-expansion and magnetostriction results on CeRhIn$_5$ single crystals. Several transitions, both first and second order, are observed when the field is applied perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis. The magnetic field dependence of the thermal-expansion coefficient above 15 K, where the magnetic correlations are negligible, can be explained supposing an almost pure $| \pm 5/2>$ ground state doublet, in apparent contradiction with neutron scattering experiments. Although the spin-lattice interaction is relevant in this compound, the effect of the magn…
The effect of thermal fluctuation on the spin-chirality-induced anomalous Hall effect in itinerant magnets is theoretically studied. Considering a triangular-lattice model as an example, we find that a multiple-spin scattering induced by the fluctuating spins increases the Hall conductivity at a finite temperature. The temperature dependence of anomalous Hall conductivity is evaluated by a combination of an unbiased Monte Carlo simulation and a perturbation theory. Our results show that the Hall conductivity can increase up to $10^3$ times the ground state value; we discuss that this is a cons…
We discuss the violation of spin-charge separation in generic nonlinear Luttinger liquids and investigate its effect on the relaxation and thermal transport of genuine spin-1/2 electron liquids in ballistic quantum wires. We identify basic scattering processes compatible with the symmetry of the problem and conservation laws that lead to the decay of plasmons into the spin modes. We derive a closed set of coupled kinetic equations for the spin-charge excitations and solve the problem of thermal conductance of interacting electrons for an arbitrary relation between the quantum wire length and s…
We have measured the thermal conductivity along the c-axis parallel to the spin-chains, kappa_c, of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin system SrCuO_2, using as-grown and O_2-annealed single-crystals grown from raw materials with 99.9% (3N) and 99.99% (4N) purity. The value of kappa_c around 50K, where large contribution of the thermal conductivity due to spinons, kappa_spinon, is observed, is markedly enhanced by both the increase of the purity of raw materials and the O_2-annealing. Therefore, the increase of kappa_c implies that kappa_spinon is enhanced due to the decrease of spin de…
We have measured temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the thermal conductivity of single crystals of the frustrated two-leg spin-ladder system BiCu2PO6 in magnetic fields up to 14 T. It has been found that the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity along every principal crystallographic axis shows two peaks in zero field but that the magnitude of the thermal conductivity along the b-axis parallel to spin ladders, $κ$b, is significantly larger than those of the thermal conductivity along the a-axis, $κ$a, and along the c-axis, $κ$c, at high temperatures above 7 K. These res…
We have measured temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermal conductivity along the c-axis, kc, and that along the [110] direction, k110, of CuB2O4 single crystals in zero field and magnetic fields along the c-axis and along the [110] direction. It has been found that the thermal conductivity is nearly isotropic and very large in zero field and that the thermal conductivity due to phonons is dominant in CuB2O4. The temperature and field dependences of kc and k110 have markedly changed at phase boundaries in the magnetic phase diagram, which has been understood to be due to the ch…
The thermal conductivity of the Spin-Peierls (SP) compound CuGeO_3 was measured in magnetic fields up to 16 T. Above the SP transition, the heat transport due to spin excitations causes a peak at around 22 K, while below the transition the spin excitations rapidly diminish and the heat transport is dominated by phonons; however, the main scattering process of the phonons is with spin excitations, which demonstrates itself in an unusual peak in the thermal conductivity at about 5.5 K. This low-temperature peak is strongly suppressed with magnetic fields in excess of 12.5 T.
We have measured the thermal conductivity of the spin S=1 chain compound Y2BaNiO5. Analyzing the anisotropy of the thermal transport allows to identify a definite spin-mediated thermal conductivity κ_s along the chain direction. The calculated spin-related energy diffusion constant D_E(T) shows a broad peak around 120 K. Close to room temperature, D_E(T) approaches the theoretically predicted high-temperature value, while scattering of spin excitations by magnetic impurities seems to be the major limiting factor of κ_s at low temperature.
Recent theoretical studies have found quantum spin liquid states with spinon Fermi surfaces upon the application of a magnetic field on a gapped state with topological order. We investigate the thermal Hall conductivity across this transition, describing how the quantized thermal Hall conductivity of the gapped state changes to an unquantized thermal Hall conductivity in the gapless spinon Fermi surface state. We consider two cases, both of potential experimental interest: the state with non-Abelian Ising topological order on the honeycomb lattice, and the state with Abelian chiral spin liquid…
We investigate the thermal Hall effect in a Kitaev-Heisenberg system, a model for Kitaev candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$, in the presence of the coupling between spin and phonon arising from chlorine atoms' vibration. We observe that the coupling modifies the relative stability between different magnetic states under a magnetic field, especially stabilizing a canted zigzag antiferromagnetic state. Remarkably, the spin-phonon interaction has distinct effects on the thermal Hall conductivity in different magnetically ordered states. For the canted zigzag state, which is relevant to $α\text{-RuCl}_3$, the…
To probe the peculiar excitations spinons and magnetic monopoles in the quantum spin ice candidate Pr2Zr2O7, we studied the low-temperature thermal Hall conductivity (\k{appa}xy) and thermal conductivity (\k{appa}xx) of Pr2Zr2O7 single crystal with magnetic fields applied along the [111] axis. The magnetic field dependencies of \k{appa}xx suggest the roles of magnetic excitations in thermal conductivity, that is, the emergent magnetic monopoles can transport heat at T > 1.4 K and spinons mainly scatter phonons at lower temperatures. The finite \k{appa}xy was observed at low fields of several T…
We have measured the thermal conductivity of the one-dimensional (1D) S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin system of Sr2Cu1-xPdxO3 single crystals including nonmagnetic impurities of Pd2+. It has been found that the mean free path of spinons along the 1D spin chain at low temperatures is very close to the average length of finite spin chains between spin defects estimated from the magnetic susceptibility measurements. This proves that the thermal conduction due to spinons at low temperatures in Sr2CuO3 is ballistic as theoretically expected [Zotos et al.: Phys. Rev. Lett. 55 (1997) 11029].
We present a one-heater-two-thermometer set-up for measuring thermal conductivity and electric resistivity of a bulk sample at low temperatures down to 0.1 K and in magnetic fields up to 27 Tesla. The design overcomes the difficulties emerging in the context of large water-cooled resistive magnets.
We have measured the thermal conductivity parallel to the a-axis of the Zn-free and 1% Zn-substituted SrCu$_{2-x}$Zn$_x$(BO$_3$)$_2$ in magnetic fields up to 14 T, in order to examine the thermal conductivity due to the multi-triplet magnons. It has been found that the thermal conductivity peak observed in the spin gap state is suppressed by the substitution of Zn for Cu in high magnetic fields above 6 T, while it is not changed in low magnetic fields below 6 T. The results suggest that the thermal conductivity peak in the spin-gap state of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ is composed of not only thermal …
The collective behavior of thermally active structures offers clues on the emergent degrees of freedom and the physical mechanisms that determine the low energy state of a variety of systems. Here, the thermally active dynamics of magnetic dipoles at square plaquettes is modeled in terms of Brownian oscillators in contact with a heat bath. Solution of the Langevin equation for a set of interacting x-y dipoles allows the identification of the time scales and correlation length that reveal how interactions, temperature, damping and inertia may determine the frequency modes of edge and bulk magne…
We present the ultra-low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements on the single crystals of YbMgGaO$_4$, which was recently argued to be a promising candidate for quantum spin liquid (QSL). In the zero magnetic field, a large magnetic contribution of specific heat is observed, and exhibits a power-law temperature dependence ($C_m \sim T^{0.74}$). On the contrary, we do not observed any significant contribution of thermal conductivity from magnetic excitations. In magnetic fields $H \ge$ 6 T, the exponential $T$-dependence of $C_m$ and the enhanced thermal conductivity in…
Motivated by the recent surge of field-driven phenomena discussed for Kitaev materials, in particular the experimental observation of a finite thermal Hall effect and theoretical proposals for the emergence of additional spin liquid phases beyond the conventional Kitaev spin liquid, we develop a theoretical understanding of the thermal Hall effect in honeycomb Kitaev materials in magnetic fields. Our focus is on gapless U(1) spin liquids with a spinon Fermi surface, which have been shown to arise as field-induced phases. We demonstrate that in the presence of symmetry-allowed, second-neighbor …
We theoretically study thermally-activated phase slips in superfluid spin transport in easy-plane magnetic wires within the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology, which runs parallel to the Langer-Ambegaokar-McCumber-Halperin theory for thermal resistances in superconducting wires. To that end, we start by obtaining the exact solutions for free-energy minima and saddle points. We provide an analytical expression for the phase-slip rate in the zero spin-current limit, which involves detailed analysis of spin fluctuations at extrema of the free energy. An experimental setup of a magne…
Motivated by recent transport measurements in high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors in a magnetic field, we study the thermal Hall conductivity in materials with topological order, focusing on the contribution from neutral spinons. Specifically, different Schwinger boson mean-field ansätze for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice are analyzed. We allow for both Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, and additional terms associated with scalar spin chiralities that break time-reversal and reflection symmetries, but preserve their product. It is shown that these scalar spin chiralities…
Recently, Li {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107}, 060501 (2011)] have demonstrated that topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation can be implemented on the thermal state of a nearest-neighbor two-body Hamiltonian with spin-2 and spin-3/2 particles provided that the temperature is smaller than a critical value, namely, threshold temperature. Here we show that the thermal state of a nearest-neighbor two-body Hamiltonian, which consists of only spin-3/2 particles, allows us to perform topologically protected measurement-based quantum computation. The threshold temperature…
