The presence of exponential bulges and anti-truncated disks has been noticed in many lenticular galaxies. In fact, it could be expected because the very formation of S0 galaxies includes various processes of secular evolution. We discuss how to distinguish between a pseudobulge and an anti-truncated disk, and also what particular mechanisms may be responsible for the formation of anti-truncated disks. Some bright examples of lenticular galaxies with the multi-tiers exponential stellar structures are presented, among them -- two central group giant S0s seen face-on and perfectly axisymmetric.
Panoramic spectroscopic data of the sample of 80 nearby lenticular galaxies obtained with the Multi-Pupil Fiber Spectrograph of the 6-m telescope are presented. The SSP-equivalent ages, [Z/H], and [Mg/Fe] are determined through the Lick indices H-beta, Mgb, and <Fe> separately for the nuclei and for the bulges. About a half of the sample contain chemically distinct nuclei, more metal-rich and younger than the bulges. The correlations of the stellar population properties for the nearby S0s are discussed.
The properties of stellar populations in the centers of 54 nearby lenticular galaxies are investigated by means of 2D spectroscopy, with the Multi-Pupil Spectrograph of the 6m telescope of SAO RAS; the unresolved nuclei and their surrounding bulges are analysed separately. All the galaxies are divided into four subgroups depending on the environments type. Clear distinctions between the mean stellar ages and abundance ratios of the nuclei and of the bulges, both, are found for the S0s in clusters and group centers, on the one hand, and in field, on the other hand.
We present one of the largest homogeneous sets of spiral and lenticular galaxy brightness profile decompositions completed to date. The 659 galaxies in our sample have been fitted with a deVaucouleurs' law for the bulge component and an inner-truncated exponential for the disk component. Of the 659 galaxies in the sample, 620 were successfully fit with the chosen fitting functions. The fits are generally well-defined, with more than 90% having RMS deviations from the observed profile of less than 0.35 magnitudes. We find no correlations of fitting quality, as measured by these RMS residuals, w…
We consider the luminosity and environmental dependence of structural parameters of lenticular galaxies in the near-infrared K band. Using a two-dimensional galaxy image decomposition technique, we extract bulge and disk structural parameters for a sample of 36 lenticular galaxies observed by us in the K band. By combining data from the literature for field and cluster lenticulars with our data, we study correlations between parameters that characterise the bulge and the disk as a function of luminosity and environment. We find that scaling relations such as the Kormendy relation, photometric …
We investigate the correlation between the bulge effective radius (r_e) and disk scale length (r_d), in the near-infrared K band for lenticular galaxies in the field and in clusters. We find markedly different relations between the two parameters as a function of luminosity. Lenticulars with total absolute magnitude fainter than M_T = -24.5 show a positive correlation, in line with predictions of secular formation processes for the pseudo bulges of late-type disk galaxies. But brighter lenticulars with M_T < -24.5 show an anti-correlation, indicating that they formed through a different mechan…
We have obtained 2D spectral data for a sample of 58 nearby S0 galaxies with the Multi-Pupil Spectrograph of the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Lick indices H-beta, Mgb, and <Fe> are calculated separately for the nuclei and for the bulges taken as the rings between R=4" and 7"; and the luminosity-weighted ages, metallicities, and Mg/Fe ratios of the stellar populations are estimated by confronting the data to SSP models. Four types of galaxy environments are considered: clusters, centers of groups, other places in groups, and field…
Early-type galaxies, considered as large bulges, have been found to have had a much-more-than-boring star formation history in recent years by the UV satellite GALEX. The most massive bulges, brightest cluster galaxies, appear to be relatively free of young stars. But smaller bulges, normal ellipticals and lenticulars, often show unambiguous sign of recent star formation in their UV flux. The fraction of such UV-bright bulges in the volume-limited sample climbs up to the staggering 30%. The bulges of spirals follow similar trends but a larger fraction showing signs of current and recent star f…
As a result of bidimensional spectroscopy of the central parts of two nearby lenticular galaxies, NGC 1023 and NGC 7332, undertaken with the Multi-Pupil Field Spectrograph of the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory, their chemically decoupled stellar nuclei are found to be substantially younger than the surrounding bulges: the mean age of the nuclear stellar populations is 7 billion years in NGC 1023 and 2.5 +/- 0.5 billion years in NGC 7332. The morphological analysis undertaken by Seifert and Scorza (1996) for NGC 7332 and by us for NGC 1023 has revealed a existence of sepa…
We study the photometric parameters of the bulges of galaxies of different Hubble types including ellipticals, lenticulars, early and late type spirals and early type dwarf galaxies. Analyzing the distributions of various photometric parameters, and two- and three-dimensional correlations between them, we find that there is a difference in the correlations exhibited by bright (M_K < -22) and faint bulges, irrespective of their Hubble type. Importantly, the bright bulges, which include typically E/S0 galaxies and bulges of early type spirals, are tightly distributed around a common photometric …
A variety of host galaxy (bulge) parameters are examined in order to determine their predictive power in ascertaining the masses of the supermassive black holes (SMBH) at the centers of the galaxies. Based on a sample of 23 nearby galaxies, comprised of both elliptical galaxies and spiral/lenticular bulges, we identify a strong correlation between the bulge gravitational binding energy ($E_g$), as traced by the stellar light profile, and the SMBH mass ($M_{\bullet}$), such that $M_{\bullet} \propto E_g^{0.6}$. The scatter about the relationship indicates that this is as strong a predictor of $…
We present the results of a Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) survey of 24um-selected luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, L_IR > 10^11 L_sun) in the rich cluster Cl0024+16 at z=0.4. Optically, these LIRGs resemble unremarkable spiral galaxies with e(a)/e(c) spectral classifications and [Oii]-derived star formation rates (SFRs) of <2 M_sun/yr, generally indistinguishable from the 'quiescent' star forming population in the cluster. Our IRS spectra show that the majority of the 24um-detected galaxies exhibit polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission with implied SFRs ~30-60 M_sun/yr, with o…
(Abridged) A variety of formation scenarios was proposed to explain the diversity of properties observed in bulges. Studying their intrinsic shape can help in constraining the dominant mechanism at the epochs of their assembly. The structural parameters of a magnitude-limited sample of 148 unbarred S0--Sb galaxies were derived in order to study the correlations between bulges and disks as well as the probability distribution function (PDF) of the intrinsic equatorial ellipticity of bulges. It is presented a new fitting algorithm (GASP2D) to perform the two-dimensional photometric decomposition…
Substantial numbers of morphologically regular early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies contain molecular gas, and the quantities of gas are probably sufficient to explain recent estimates of the current level of star formation activity. This gas can also be used as a tracer of the processes that drive the evolution of early-type galaxies. For example, in most cases the gas is forming dynamically cold stellar disks with sizes in the range of hundreds of pc to more than one kpc, although there is typically only 1% of the total stellar mass currently available to form young stars. The num…
We have performed TreeSPH simulations of galaxy formation in a standard LCDM cosmology, including effects of star formation, energetic stellar feedback processes and a meta-galactic UV field, and obtain a mix of disk, lenticular and elliptical galaxies. The disk galaxies are deficient in angular momentum by only about a factor of two compared to observed disk galaxies. The stellar disks have approximately exponential surface density profiles, and those of the bulges range from exponential to r^{1/4}, as observed. The bulge-to-disk ratios of the disk galaxies are consistent with observations an…
This review recaps significant results as they apply to non-dwarf galaxies, including the Milky Way, spiral disks and bulges, and elliptical and lenticular galaxies. Conclusions that span the galaxy types treated here are as follows. All galaxies, on average, have heavy element abundances (metallicities) that systematically decrease outward from their galactic centers while their global metallicities increase with galaxy mass. Abundance gradients are steepest in normal spirals and are seen to be progressively flatter going in order from barred spirals, lenticulars, and ellipticals. For spiral …
We present results from a new and unique integral-field spectrograph, SAURON. It has a large field of view and high throughput and is primarily built for the study of stellar & gaseous kinematics and stellar populations in galaxies. Its aim is to carry out a systematic survey of the velocity fields, velocity dispersions, and line-strength distributions of nearby ellipticals, lenticular galaxies and spiral bulges. Its wide field is especially useful for the study of complicated velocity structures. Together with other spectroscopic data, images, and dynamical modelling, SAURON will help to cons…
We present BUDDA (BUlge/Disk Decomposition Analysis), a new code devoted to perform a two-dimensional bulge/disk decomposition directly from the images of galaxies. The bulge component is fitted with a generalized Sersic profile whereas disks have an exponential profile. No other components are included. Bars and other sub-structures, like lenses, rings, inner bars and inner disks, are studied with the residual images obtained through the subtraction of bulges and disks from the original images. This means that a detailed structural analysis of galaxies may be performed with a small number of …
M32 is the prototype for the relatively rare class of galaxies referred to as `compact ellipticals'. It has been suggested that M32 may be a tidally disturbed r^(1/4) elliptical galaxy, or the remnant bulge of a disk-stripped early-type spiral galaxy. This paper reveals that the surface brightness profile, the velocity dispersion measurements, and the estimated supermassive black hole mass in M32 are inconsistent with the galaxy having, and probably ever having had, an r^(1/4) light profile. Instead, the radial surface brightness distribution of M32 resembles an almost perfect (bulge + exponen…
Images taken with the IRAC instrument on the Spitzer Space Telescope show that the spatial distribution of warm dust emission in lenticular galaxies is often organized into dynamically-stable structures strongly resembling spiral arms. These galaxies have bulge-to-disk-ratios and colors for their stellar content appropriate for their morphological classification. Two of the three galaxies with warm dust detected at 8.0 um also show far-IR emission expected from that dust. More importantly, the [5.8]-[8.0] color of the dust emission matches the colors found for late-type, star-forming galaxies,…
In this paper we analyze the structural parameters of the dwarf galaxies in the Coma cluster with $-18 \le M_{B} \le -16$ and classify them in two types: those with surface brightness profiles well fitted by a single Sersic law were called dwarf ellipticals (dEs), and those fitted with Sersic-plus-exponential profiles were classified as dwarf lenticulars (dS0s). The comparison of the structural parameters of the dwarf galaxies in the Coma and Virgo clusters shows that they are analogous. Photometrically, the dE and dS0 galaxies in Coma are equivalent, having similar colors and global scales. H…
We have measured the central structural properties for a sample of S0-Sbc galaxies down to scales of ~10 pc using HST NICMOS images. We find that the photometric masses of the central star clusters, which occur in 58% of our sample, are related to their host bulge masses such that MassPt = 10^{7.75\pm0.15}(MassBul/10^{10}MassSun)^{0.76\pm 0.13}. Put together with recent data on bulges hosting supermassive black holes, we infer a non-linear dependency of the `Central Massive Object' mass on the host bulge mass such that MassCMO = 10^{7.51\pm 0.06} (MassBul/10^{10}MassSun)^{0.84 \pm 0.06}. We ar…
Spectroscopic observations of three lenticular (S0) galaxies (NGC 1167, NGC 4150, and NGC 6340) and one SBa galaxy (NGC 2273) have been taken with the 6-m telescope of the Special AstrophysicalObservatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences aimed to study the structure and kinematic properties of early-type disk galaxies. The radial profiles of the stellar radial velocities and the velocity dispersion are measured. N-body simulations are used to construct dynamical models of galaxies containing a stellar disk, bulge, and halo. The masses of individual components are estimated formaximum-mass di…
We have done a detailed study on the structural and kinematical properties of lenticular and early- and late-type spiral galaxies with bars, aiming to explore the formation and evolution processes of stellar bars in galaxies, and their implications on the global formation and evolution of galaxies. Using spectra obtained along the major and minor axes of the bars in a sample of 14 galaxies, we have determined the stellar velocity distribution in the bars' vertical axis. With these data, it was possible to develop a diagnostic tool that allows one to estimate the ages of bars. Through realistic…
