In previous work the authors considered the asymmetric simple exclusion process on the integer lattice in the case of step initial condition, particles beginning at the positive integers. There it was shown that the probability distribution for the position of an individual particle is given by an integral whose integrand involves a Fredholm determinant. Here we use this formula to obtain three asymptotic results for the positions of these particles. In one an apparently new distribution function arises and in another the distribuion function F_2 arises. The latter extends a result of Johansson on TASEP to ASEP.
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with half-flat initial condition. We show that the one-point marginals of the ASEP height function are described by those of the $\mbox{Airy}_{2 \rightarrow 1}$ process, introduced by Borodin-Ferrari-Sasamoto in (Commun. Pure Appl. Math., 61, 1603-1629, 2008). This result was conjectured by Ortmann-Quastel-Remenik (Ann. Appl. Probab., 26, 507-548), based on an informal asymptotic analysis of exact formulas for generating functions of the half-flat ASEP height function at one spatial point. Our present work provides a fully rigorous der…
This paper extends work by Tracy and Widom on blocks in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) to the case of step-Bernoulli initial condition. We consider the probability that a particle at site $x$ is the beginning of a block of $L$ consecutive particles at time $t$ in ASEP with step-Bernoulli initial condition. A Fredholm determinant representation for this probability is derived, and the asymptotics are computed for the KPZ regime.
This paper extends results of earlier work on ASEP to the case of step Bernoulli initial condition. The main results are a representation in terms of a Fredholm determinant for the probability distribution of a fixed particle, and asymptotic results which in particular establish KPZ universality for this probability in one regime. (And, as a corollary, for the current fluctuations.)
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the integers in which the initial density at a site (the probability that it is occupied) is given by a periodic function on the positive integers. (When the function is constant this is the step Bernoulli initial condition.) Starting with a result in earlier work we find a formula for the probability distribution for a given particle at a given time which is a sum over positive integers k of integrals of order k.
For the asymmetric simple exclusion process on the integer lattice with two-sided Bernoulli initial condition, we derive exact formulas for the following quantities: (1) the probability that site x is occupied at time t; (2) a correlation function, the probability that site 0 is occupied at time 0 and site x is occupied at time t; (3) the distribution function for the total flux across 0 at time t and its exponential generating function.
In this paper we consider two models in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and the stochastic six-vertex model. We introduce a new class of initial data (which we call {\itshape generalized step Bernoulli initial data}) for both of these models that generalizes the step Bernoulli initial data studied in a number of recent works on the ASEP. Under this class of initial data, we analyze the current fluctuations of both the ASEP and stochastic six-vertex model and establish the existence of a phase transition along a characteristic lin…
In this paper we give the distribution of the position of the particle in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with the alternating initial condition. That is, we find $\mathbb{P}(X_m(t) \leq x)$ where $X_m(t)$ is the position of the particle at time $t$ which was at $m =2k-1, k \in \mathbb{Z}$ at $t=0.$ As in the ASEP with the step initial condition, there arises a new combinatorial identity for the alternating initial condition, and this identity relates the integrand to a determinantal form together with an extra product.
We obtain a Fredholm Pfaffian formula for an appropriate generating function of the height function of the asymmetric simple exclusion process starting from flat (periodic) initial data. Formal asymptotics lead to the GOE Tracy-Widom distribution.
We demonstrate a Markov duality between the dynamic ASEP and the standard ASEP. We then apply this to step initial data, as well as a half-stationary initial data (which we introduce). While investigating the duality for half-stationary initial data, we uncover and utilize connections to continuous $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials. Finally, we introduce a family of stationary initial data which are related to the indeterminate moment problem associated with these $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials.
It has been known that the transition probability of the single species ASEP with $N$ particles is expressed as a sum of $N!$ $N$-fold contour integrals which are related to permutations in the symmetric group $S_N$. On other hand, the transition probabilities of the multi-species ASEP, in general, may be expressed as a sum of much more terms than $N!$. In this paper, we show that if the initial order of species is given by $2\cdots 21$, $12\cdots 2$, $1\cdots 12$ or $21\cdots 1$, then the transition probabilities can be expressed as a sum of at most $N!$ contour integrals, and provide their f…
We introduce a family of discrete determinantal point processes related to orthogonal polynomials on the real line, with correlation kernels defined via spectral projections for the associated Jacobi matrices. For classical weights, we show how such ensembles arise as limits of various hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials ensembles. We then prove that the q-Laplace transform of the height function of the ASEP with step initial condition is equal to the expectation of a simple multiplicative functional on a discrete Laguerre ensemble --- a member of the new family. This allows us to obtain the…
We study the asymptotic speed of a second class particle in the two-species asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$ with each particle belonging either to the first class or the second class. For any fixed non-negative integer $L$, we consider the two-species ASEP started from the initial data with all the sites of $\mathbb{Z}_{<-L}$ occupied by first class particles, all the sites of $\mathbb{Z}_{[-L,0]}$ occupied by second class particles, and the rest of the sites of $\mathbb{Z}$ unoccupied. With these initial conditions, we show that the speed of the leftmost second clas…
In previous work the authors found integral formulas for probabilities in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the integer lattice. The dynamics are uniquely determined once the initial state is specified. In this note we restrict our attention to the case of step initial condition with particles at the positive integers, and consider the distribution function for the m'th particle from the left. In the previous work an infinite series of multiple integrals was derived for this distribution. In this note we show that the series can be summed to give a single integral whose integra…
This is an expanded version of a series of lectures delivered by the second author in June, 2009. It describes the results of three of the authors' papers on ASEP, from the derivation of exact formulas for configuration probabilities, through Fredholm determinant representation, to asymptotics for ASEP with step initial condition establishing KPZ universality. Although complete proofs are in general not given, at least the main elements of them are.
We provide a conceptual proof of the color-position symmetry of colored ASEP by relating it to the actions of Coxeter groups. The group action (and hence the color-position symmetry) also applies to more general interacting particle systems, such as the colored ASEP(q,j) or systems with open boundary conditions. As an application, we find the asymptotics of the expected positions of second-class particles in the ASEP(q,j).
The purpose of this article is to describe the two approaches to compute exact formulas (which are amenable to asymptotic analysis) for the probability distribution of the current of particles past a given site in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) with step initial data. The first approach is via a variant of the coordinate Bethe ansatz and was developed in work of Tracy and Widom in 2008-2009, while the second approach is via a rigorous version of the replica trick and was developed in work of Borodin, Sasamoto and the author in 2012.
It was recently proved in [Corwin-Shen, 2016] that under weak asymmetry scaling, the height functions for open ASEP on the half-line and on a bounded interval converge to the Hopf-Cole solution of the KPZ equation with Neumann boundary conditions. In their assumptions [Corwin-Shen, 2016] chose positive values for the Neumann boundary conditions, and they assumed initial data which is close to stationarity. By developing more extensive heat-kernel estimates, we extend their results to negative values of the Neumann boundary parameters, and we also show how to generalize their results to narrow-…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the positive integers with an open boundary condition. We show that, when starting devoid of particles and for a certain boundary condition, the height function at the origin fluctuates asymptotically (in large time $τ$) according to the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution on the $τ^{1/3}$ scale. This is the first example of KPZ asymptotics for a half-space system outside the class of free-fermionic/determinantal/Pfaffian models. Our main tool in this analysis is a new class of probability measures on Young diagrams that we call half-space…
In this paper we show that a variety of interacting particle systems with multiple species can be viewed as random walks on Hecke algebras. This class of systems includes the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), M-exclusion TASEP, ASEP(q,j), stochastic vertex models, and many others. As an application, we study the asymptotic behavior of second class particles in some of these systems.
For ASEP with step initial data and a second class particle started at the origin we prove that as time goes to infinity the second class particle almost surely achieves a velocity that is uniformly distributed on $[-1,1]$. This positively resolves Conjecture 1.9 and 1.10 of [Amir, Angel and Valko, "The TASEP speed process", Annals of Probability 39, 1205--1242, 2011] and allows us to construct the ASEP speed process.
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$. For continuous densities, ASEP is in local equilibrium for large times, at discontinuities however, one expects to see a dynamical phase transition, i.e. a mixture of different equilibriums. We consider ASEP with deterministic initial data such that at large times, two rarefactions come together at the origin, and the density jumps from $0$ to $1$. Shifting the measure on the KPZ $1/3$ scale, we show that the law of ASEP converges to a mixture of the Dirac measures with only holes resp. only particles. The parameter of…
We consider the ASEP and the stochastic six vertex model started with step initial data. After a long time, $T$, it is known that the one-point height function fluctuations for these systems are of order $T^{1/3}$. We prove the KPZ prediction of $T^{2/3}$ scaling in space. Namely, we prove tightness (and Brownian absolute continuity of all subsequential limits) as $T$ goes to infinity of the height function with spatial coordinate scaled by $T^{2/3}$ and fluctuations scaled by $T^{1/3}$. The starting point for proving these results is a connection discovered recently by Borodin-Bufetov-Wheeler…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$ with an initial data such that in the large time particle density $ρ(\cdot)$ a discontinuity at the origin is created, where the value of $ρ$ jumps from zero to one, but $ρ(-\varepsilon),1-ρ(\varepsilon) >0 $ for any $\varepsilon>0$. We consider the position of a particle $x_{M}$ macroscopically located at the discontinuity, and show that its limit law has a cutoff under $t^{1/2}$ scaling. Inside the discontinuity region, we show that a discrete product limit law arises, which bounds from above the limiting fluctuations…
We write explicit contour integral formulas for probability distributions of the multi-species q-TAZRP and the multi-species ASEP starting with q-exchangeable initial conditions. The formulas are equal to the corresponding explicit contour integral formulas for the single-species q-TAZRP ([Korhonen-Lee 2014, Wang-Waugh 2016]) and ASEP [Tracy-Widom 2007], with a factor in front of the integral. For the multi-species q-TAZRP, we use a decomposition theorem for elements of double cosets of parabolic subgroups in a Coxeter group. The set of distinguished double coset representatives with minimal l…
We prove duality relations for two interacting particle systems: the $q$-deformed totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) and the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). Expectations of the duality functionals correspond to certain joint moments of particle locations or integrated currents, respectively. Duality implies that they solve systems of ODEs. These systems are integrable and for particular step and half-stationary initial data we use a nested contour integral ansatz to provide explicit formulas for the systems' solutions, and hence also the moments. We form Laplac…
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process on $\mathbb{Z}$ with a single second class particle initially at the origin. The first class particles form two rarefaction fans which come together at the origin, where the large time density jumps from $0$ to $1$. We are interested in $X(t)$, the position of the second class particle at time $t$. We show that, under the KPZ $1/3$ scaling, $X(t)$ is asymptotically distributed as the difference of two independent, $\mathrm{GUE}$-distributed random variables. The key part of the proof is to show that $X(t)$ equals, up to a negligible term, the …
Tau functions expressed as fermionic expectation values are shown to provide a natural and straightforward description of a number of random processes and statistical models involving hard core configurations of identical particles on the integer lattice, like a discrete version simple exclusion processes (ASEP), nonintersecting random walkers, lattice Coulomb gas models and others, as well as providing a powerful tool for combinatorial calculations involving paths between pairs of partitions. We study the decay of the initial step function within the discrete ASEP (d-ASEP) model as an example…
We prove a color-position symmetry for a class of ASEP-like interacting particle systems with discrete time on the one-dimensional lattice. The full space-time inhomogeneity of our systems allows to apply the result to colored (or multi-species) ASEP and stochastic vertex models for a certain class of initial/boundary conditions, generalizing previous results of Amir-Angel-Valko and Borodin-Wheeler. We are also able to use the symmetry, together with previously known results for uncolored models, to find novel asymptotic behavior of the second class particles in several situations.
We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on $\mathbb{Z}$ with initial data such that in the large time particle density $ρ(\cdot)$ a discontinuity (shock) at the origin is created. At the shock, the value of $ρ$ jumps from zero to one, but $ρ(-\varepsilon),1-ρ(\varepsilon) >0 $ for any $\varepsilon>0$. We are interested in the rescaled position of a tagged particle which enters the shock with positive probability. We show that, inside the shock region, the particle position has the KPZ-typical $1/3$ fluctuations, a $F_{\mathrm{GUE}}\times F_{\mathrm{GUE}}$ limit law and a deg…
We give an exact expression for the distribution of the position X(t) of a single second class particle in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) where initially the second class particle is located at the origin and the first class particles occupy the sites {1,2,...}.
We introduce a new method, which we call stochastic fusion, which takes an exclusion process and constructs an interacting particle systems in which more than one particle may occupy a lattice site. The construction only requires the existence of stationary measures of the original exclusion process on a finite lattice. If the original exclusion process satisfies Markov duality on a finite lattice, then the construction produces Markov duality functions (for some initial conditions) for the fused exclusion process. The stochastic fusion construction is based off of the Rogers-Pitman intertwini…
We develop spectral theory for the q-Hahn stochastic particle system introduced recently by Povolotsky. That is, we establish a Plancherel type isomorphism result which implies completeness and biorthogonality statements for the Bethe ansatz eigenfunctions of the system. Owing to a Markov duality with the q-Hahn TASEP (a discrete-time generalization of TASEP with particles' jump distribution being the orthogonality weight for the classical q-Hahn orthogonal polynomials), we write down moment formulas which characterize the fixed time distribution of the q-Hahn TASEP with general initial data. …
We consider the one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) in which particles jump to the right at rate $p\in(1/2,1]$ and to the left at rate $1-p$, interacting by exclusion. In the initial state there is a finite region such that to the left of this region all sites are occupied and to the right of it all sites are empty. Under this initial state, the hydrodynamical limit of the process converges to the rarefaction fan of the associated Burgers equation. In particular suppose that the initial state has first-class particles to the left of the origin, second-class particles at …
We study a new process, which we call ASEP$(q,j)$, where particles move asymmetrically on a one-dimensional integer lattice with a bias determined by $q\in (0,1)$ and where at most $2j\in\mathbb{N}$ particles per site are allowed. The process is constructed from a $(2j+1)$-dimensional representation of a quantum Hamiltonian with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ invariance by applying a suitable ground-state transformation. After showing basic properties of the process ASEP$(q,j)$, we prove self-duality with several self-duality functions constructed from the symmetries of the quantum Hamiltonian. By mak…
Staircase tableaux are combinatorial objects that were first introduced due to a connection with the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) and Askey-Wilson polynomials. Since their introduction, staircase tableaux have been the object of study in many recent papers. Relevant to this paper, the distri- bution of parameters on the first diagonal was proven to be asymptotically normal. In that same paper, a conjecture was made that the other diagonals would be asymptotically Poisson. Since then, only the second and the third diagonal were proven to follow the conjecture. This paper builds up…
In this paper we obtain general integral formulas for probabilities in the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on the integer lattice with nearest neighbor hopping rates p to the right and q=1-p to the left. For the most part we consider an N-particle system but for certain of these formulas we can take the limit as N goes to infinity. First we obtain, for the N-particle system, a formula for the probability of a configuration at time t, given the initial configuration. For this we use Bethe Ansatz ideas to solve the master equation, extending a result of Schuetz for the case N=2. The m…
In the asymmetric simple exclusion process on the integers each particle waits exponential time, then with probability p it moves one step to the right if the site is unoccupied, otherwise it stays put; and with probability q=1-p it moves one step to the left if the site is unoccupied, otherwise it stays put. In previous work the authors, using the Bethe Ansatz, found for N-particle ASEP a formula --- a sum of multiple integrals --- for the probability that a system is in a particular configuration at time t given an initial configuration. The present work extends this to the case where partic…
We treat the $N$-particle ZRP whose jumping rates satisfy a certain condition. This condition is required to use the Bethe ansatz and the resulting model is the $q$-boson model that appeared in [J. Phys. A, \textbf{31} 6057--6071 (1998)] by Sasamoto and Wadati or the $q$-TAZRP in \textit{MacDonald processes} by Borodin and Corwin. We find the explicit formula of the transition probability of the $q$-TAZRP via the Bethe ansatz. By using the transition probability we find the probability distribution of the left-most particle's position at time $t$. To find the probability for the left-most part…
Many integrable stochastic particle systems in one space dimension (such as TASEP - totally asymmetric simple exclusion process - and its various deformations, with a notable exception of ASEP) remain integrable when we equip each particle $x_i$ with its own jump rate parameter $ν_i$. It is a consequence of integrability that the distribution of each particle $x_n(t)$ in a system started from the step initial configuration depends on the parameters $ν_j$, $j\le n$, in a symmetric way. A transposition $ν_n \leftrightarrow ν_{n+1}$ of the parameters thus affects only the distribution of $x_n(t)$…
We consider the continuous parabolic Anderson model with the Gaussian fields under the measure-valued initial conditions, the covariances of which are nonhomogeneous in time and fractional rough in space. We mainly study the spatial behaviors for the Feynman-Kac formulas in Stratonovich's sense. Benefited from the application of Feynman-Kac formula based on Brownian bridge, the precise spatial asymptotics can be obtained in the broader conditions than before.
We investigate the growth of the tallest peaks of random field solutions to the parabolic Anderson models over concentric balls as the radii approach infinity. The noise is white in time and correlated in space. The spatial correlation function is either bounded or non-negative satisfying Dalang's condition. The initial data are Borel measures with compact supports, in particular, include Dirac masses. The results obtained are related to those of Conus, Joseph and Khoshnevisan 2013 and X. Chen 2016, where constant initial data are considered.
Scaling limits for continuous-time branching processes with discrete state space are provided as the initial state tends to infinity. Depending on the finiteness or non-finiteness of the mean and/or the variance of the offspring distribution, the limits are in general time-inhomogeneous Gaussian processes, time-inhomogeneous generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type processes or continuous-state branching processes. We also provide transfer results showing how specific asymptotic relations for the probability generating function of the offspring distribution carry over to those of the one-dimensiona…
We derive asymptotic formulas for the mean exit time $\barτ^{N}$ of the fastest among $N$ identical independently distributed Brownian particles to an absorbing boundary for various initial distributions (partially uniformly and exponentially distributed). Depending on the tail of the initial distribution, we report here a continuous algebraic decay law for $\barτ^{N}$, which differs from the classical Weibull or Gumbell results. We derive asymptotic formulas in dimension 1 and 2, for half-line and an interval that we compare with stochastic simulations. We also obtain formulas for an additive…
