In this article we present a method for formally proving the correctness of the lazy algorithms for computing homographic and quadratic transformations -- of which field operations are special cases-- on a representation of real numbers by coinductive streams. The algorithms work on coinductive stream of Möbius maps and form the basis of the Edalat--Potts exact real arithmetic. We use the machinery of the Coq proof assistant for the coinductive types to present the formalisation. The formalised algorithms are only partially productive, i.e., they do not output provably infinite streams for all possible inputs. We show how to deal with this partiality in the presence of syntactic restrictions posed by the constructive type theory of Coq. Furthermore we show that the type theoretic techniques that we develop are compatible with the semantics of the algorithms as continuous maps on real numbers. The resulting Coq formalisation is available for public download.
Based on a new coinductive characterization of continuous functions we extract certified programs for exact real number computation from constructive proofs. The extracted programs construct and combine exact real number algorithms with respect to the binary signed digit representation of real numbers. The data type corresponding to the coinductive definition of continuous functions consists of finitely branching non-wellfounded trees describing when the algorithm writes and reads digits. We discuss several examples including the extraction of programs for polynomials up to degree two and the …
Inductive and coinductive types are commonly construed as ontological (Church-style) types, denoting canonical data-sets such as natural numbers, lists, and streams. For various purposes, notably the study of programs in the context of global semantics, it is preferable to think of types as semantical properties (Curry-style). Intrinsic theories were introduced in the late 1990s to provide a purely logical framework for reasoning about programs and their semantic types. We extend them here to data given by any combination of inductive and coinductive definitions. This approach is of interest b…
We present a coinductive framework for defining and reasoning about the infinitary analogues of equational logic and term rewriting in a uniform, coinductive way. The setup captures rewrite sequences of arbitrary ordinal length, but it has neither the need for ordinals nor for metric convergence. This makes the framework especially suitable for formalizations in theorem provers.
We present a coinductive framework for defining infinitary analogues of equational reasoning and rewriting in a uniform way. We define the relation =^infty, notion of infinitary equational reasoning, and ->^infty, the standard notion of infinitary rewriting as follows: =^infty := nu R. ( <-_root + ->_root + lift(R) )^* ->^infty := mu R. nu S. ( ->_root + lift(R) )^* ; lift(S) where lift(R) := { (f(s_1,...,s_n), f(t_1,...,t_n)) | s_1 R t_1,...,s_n R t_n } + id , and where mu is the least fixed point operator and nu is the greatest fixed point operator. The setup captures rewrite sequences of ar…
In a recent paper, Herbelin developed dPA${^ω}$, a calculus in which constructive proofs for the axioms of countable and dependent choices could be derived via the memoization of choice functions. However, the property of normalization (and therefore the one of soundness) was only conjectured. The difficulty for the proof of normalization is due to the simultaneous presence of dependent types (for the constructive part of the choice), of control operators (for classical logic), of coinductive objects (to encode functions of type ${\mathbb{N} \to A}$ into streams (${a_0},{a_1},...$)) and of laz…
In a recent paper, Herbelin developed a calculus dPA$^ω$ in which constructive proofs for the axioms of countable and dependent choices could be derived via the encoding of a proof of countable universal quantification as a stream of it components. However, the property of normalization (and therefore the one of soundness) was only conjectured. The difficulty for the proof of normalization is due to the simultaneous presence of dependent dependent types (for the constructive part of the choice), of control operators (for classical logic), of coinductive objects (to encode functions of type $N\…
In recent work we have shown how it is possible to define very precise type systems for object-oriented languages by abstractly compiling a program into a Horn formula f. Then type inference amounts to resolving a certain goal w.r.t. the coinductive (that is, the greatest) Herbrand model of f. Type systems defined in this way are idealized, since in the most interesting instantiations both the terms of the coinductive Herbrand universe and goal derivations cannot be finitely represented. However, sound and quite expressive approximations can be implemented by considering only regular terms and…
In type theory, coinductive types are used to represent processes, and are thus crucial for the formal verification of non-terminating reactive programs in proof assistants based on type theory, such as Coq and Agda. Currently, programming and reasoning about coinductive types is difficult for two reasons: The need for recursive definitions to be productive, and the lack of coincidence of the built-in identity types and the important notion of bisimilarity. Guarded recursion in the sense of Nakano has recently been suggested as a possible approach to dealing with the problem of productivity, a…
Coinductive reasoning about infinitary structures such as streams is widely applicable. However, practical frameworks for developing coinductive proofs and finding reasoning principles that help structure such proofs remain a challenge, especially in the context of machine-checked formalization. This paper gives a novel presentation of an equational theory for reasoning about structures up to weak bisimulation. The theory is both compositional, making it suitable for defining general-purpose lemmas, and also incremental, meaning that the bisimulation can be created interactively. To prove the …
This paper presents a formally verified quantifier elimination (QE) algorithm for first-order real arithmetic by linear and quadratic virtual substitution (VS) in Isabelle/HOL. The Tarski-Seidenberg theorem established that the first-order logic of real arithmetic is decidable by QE. However, in practice, QE algorithms are highly complicated and often combine multiple methods for performance. VS is a practically successful method for QE that targets formulas with low-degree polynomials. To our knowledge, this is the first work to formalize VS for quadratic real arithmetic including inequalitie…
We formalize the univariate fragment of Ben-Or, Kozen, and Reif's (BKR) decision procedure for first-order real arithmetic in Isabelle/HOL. BKR's algorithm has good potential for parallelism and was designed to be used in practice. Its key insight is a clever recursive procedure that computes the set of all consistent sign assignments for an input set of univariate polynomials while carefully managing intermediate steps to avoid exponential blowup from naively enumerating all possible sign assignments (this insight is fundamental for both the univariate case and the general case). Our proof co…
We provide a "shared axiomatization" of natural numbers and hereditarily finite sets built around a polymorphic abstraction of bijective base-2 arithmetics. The "axiomatization" is described as a progressive refinement of Haskell type classes with examples of instances converging to an efficient implementation in terms of arbitrary length integers and bit operations. As an instance, we derive algorithms to perform arithmetic operations efficiently directly with hereditarily finite sets. The self-contained source code of the paper is available at http://logic.cse.unt.edu/tarau/research/2010/uni…
We discuss the topic of unsatisfiability proofs in SMT, particularly with reference to quantifier free non-linear real arithmetic. We outline how the methods here do not admit trivial proofs and how past formalisation attempts are not sufficient. We note that the new breed of local search based algorithms for this domain may offer an easier path forward.
We present a methodology for formal verification of arithmetic RTL designs that combines sequential logic equivalence checking with interactive theorem proving. An intermediate model of a Verilog module is hand-coded in Restricted Algorithmic C (RAC), a primitive subset of C augmented by the integer and fixed-point register class templates of Algorithmic C. The model is designed to be as abstract and compact as possible, but sufficiently faithful to the RTL to allow efficient equivalence checking with a commercial tool. It is then automatically translated to the logic of ACL2, enabling a mecha…
Unlike some other formal systems, the proof system Metamath has no built-in concept of "decimal number" in the sense that arbitrary digit strings are not recognized by the system without prior definition. We present a system of theorems and definitions and an algorithm to apply these as basic operations to perform arithmetic calculations with a number of steps proportional to an arbitrary-precision arithmetic calculation. We consider as case study the formal proof of Bertrand's postulate, which required the calculation of many small primes. Using a Mathematica implementation, we were able to c…
For the implementations of controllers on digital processors, certain limitations, e.g. in the instruction set and register length, need to be taken into account, especially for safety-critical applications. This work aims to provide a computer-certified inductive definition for the control functions that are implemented on such processors accompanied with the fixed-point data type in a proof assistant. Using these inductive definitions we formally ensure correct realization of the controllers on a digital processor. Our results guarantee overflow-free computations of the implemented control a…
