We present a combined analysis of the low-mass Initial Mass Function (IMF) for seven star forming regions. We first demonstrate that the ratios of stars to brown dwarfs are consistent with a single underlying IMF. Assuming the underlying IMF is the same for all seven clusters and by combining the ratio of stars to brown dwarfs from each cluster we constrain the shape of the brown dwarf IMF and find it to be consistent with a log--normal IMF. This provides the strongest constraint yet that the sub-stellar IMF turns over (dN/dM M^(-alpha), alpha < 0).
Many recent works have attempted to constrain the stellar initial mass function (IMF) inside massive clusters by comparing their dynamical mass estimates to the measured light. These studies have come to different conclusions, with some claiming standard Kroupa-type IMFs, while others have claimed extreme non-standard IMFs. However, the results appear to be correlated with the age of the clusters, as older clusters (>80 Myr) all appear to be well fit by a Kroupa-type IMF whereas younger clusters display significant scatter in their best fitting IMF. Here we show that this is likely due to the …
We re-analyse all of the archive observations of the Ophiuchus dark cloud L1688 that were carried out with the submillimetre common-user bolometer array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). For the first time we put together all of the data that were taken of this cloud at different times to make a deeper map at 850 microns than has ever previously been published. Using this new, deeper map we extract the pre-stellar cores from the data. We use updated values for the distance to the cloud complex, and also for the internal temperatures of the pre-stellar cores to generate an up…
Sensitive imaging X-ray observations of young stellar clusters (YSCs, ages less than about 10 Myr) are valuable tools for the acquisition of an unbiased census of cluster members needed for Initial Mass Function (IMF) studies. Several dozen YSCs, both nearby and across the Galactic disk, have been observed with the Chandra and XMM-Newton satellites, detecting >10,000 low-mass cluster members. Many of these samples should be nearly complete down to about 1 Mo. An important additional benefit is that the YSC X-ray luminosity function appears to be universal with a lognormal shape, providing a ne…
We present near-infrared J, H, and K_s images and K-band spectroscopy of two newly discovered stellar clusters at different stages of evolution. Our spectra suggest the presence of massive YSOs in the heavily embedded cluster in the star-forming region near radio source G353.4-0.4 and an O5-O6V star in the cluster near radio source G305+00.2. We determine a K-band luminosity function (KLF) for both clusters and an initial mass function (IMF) for the cluster near G305+00.2. The derived IMF slope is -1.5 if the KLF is used to derive the IMF and is -0.98 if the color-magnitude diagram and spectra…
We summarize recent observational and theoretical progress aimed at understanding the origin of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) with specific focus on galactic star-forming regions. We synthesize data from various efforts to determine the IMF in very young, partially-embedded stellar clusters and find: i) no significant variations in the low-mass IMF have been observed between different star-forming regions; and ii) the mass distributions of young stars just emerging from molecular clouds are consistent with having been drawn from the IMF derived from field stars in the solar neighborh…
NGC 6611 is the massive young cluster (2-3 Myr) that ionises the Eagle Nebula. We present very deep photometric observations of the central region of NGC 6611 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope and the following filters: ACS/WFC F775W and F850LP and NIC2 F110W and F160W, loosely equivalent to ground-based IZJH filters. This survey reaches down to I ~ 26 mag. We construct the Initial Mass Function (IMF) from ~ 1.5 Msun well into the brown dwarf regime (down to ~ 0.02 Msun). We have detected 30-35 brown dwarf candidates in this sample. The low-mass IMF is combined with a higher-mass IMF co…
Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources form a key element in the study of the onset and evolution of radio-loud AGN, since they are most likely the young counterparts of extended radio sources. Here we discuss space-VLBI observations of GPS sources, which enable us to obtain unprecedented angular resolution at frequencies near their spectral turnovers. Observed peak brightness temperatures of Log[T]=10.5-11 Kelvin indicate that synchrotron self absorption is responsible for their spectral turnovers. This is in close agreement with previous size - spectral turnover statistics for GPS sources. …
Few dozens of young high mass stars orbit Sgr A* at distances as short as 0.1 parsec, where star formation should be quenched by the strong tidal shear from Sgr A*. The puzzling young stellar population is believed to come into existence in one of the two ways: (i) "normal" star formation at several tens of parsec in a very massive star cluster that then spiraled in, or (ii) star formation in situ in a massive self-gravitating disk. We propose to constrain these two scenarios via the expected X-ray emission from young low mass stars that should have formed alongside the massive stars. To this …
By combining deep optical imaging and infrared spectroscopy with data from the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and from previous studies (e.g., Briceno et al.), I have measured the Initial Mass Function (IMF) for a reddening-limited sample in four fields in the Taurus star forming region. This IMF is representative of the young populations within these fields for masses above 0.02 Msun. Relative to the similarly derived IMF for the Trapezium Cluster (Luhman et al.), the IMF for Taurus exhibits a modest deficit of stars above one solar mass (i.e., steeper slope), the same turnover mass (~0.8 …
Observations have not yielded convincing results concerning the form of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) or its variations in space and time, so it is proposed that theoretical models may provide useful guidance. Several classes of theoretical models for the physics controlling the IMF are reviewed, emphasizing the dependence of the results on the probability distribution of velocity and density fluctuations, the spatial density distribution, the softness of the equation of state as controlled by the dominant heating and cooling processes, the ambient radiation field, and the star forma…
We demonstrate the feasibility of detecting directly low mass stars in unresolved super-star clusters with ages < 10 Myr using near-infrared spectroscopy at modest resolution (R ~ 1000). Such measurements could constrain the ratio of high to low mass stars in these extreme star-forming events, providing a direct test on the universal nature of the initial mass function (IMF) compared to the disk of the Milky Way (Chabrier, 2003). We compute the integrated light of super-star clusters with masses of 10^6 Msun drawn from the Salpeter (1955) and Chabrier (2003) IMFs for clusters aged 1, 3, and 10…
We present the results of numerical experiments designed to evaluate the usefulness of near-infrared luminosity functions for constraining the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of young stellar populations. From this numerical modeling, we find that the luminosity function of a young stellar population is considerably more sensitive to variations in the underlying initial mass function than to either variations in the star forming history or assumed pre-main-sequence (PMS) mass-to-luminosity relation. To illustrate the potential effectiveness of using the KLF of a young cluster to constrain its IMF,…
The turnover in the stellar initial mass function (IMF) at low mass suggests the presence of two independent mass functions that combine in different ways above and below a characteristic mass given by the thermal Jeans mass in the cloud. In the random sampling model introduced earlier, the Salpeter IMF at intermediate to high mass follows primarily from the hierarchical structure of interstellar clouds, which is sampled by various star formation processes and converted into stars at the local dynamical rate. This power law part is independent of the details of star formation inside each clump…
The optical-IR images of the Northern and Southern Hubble Deep Fields are used to measure the spectral and density evolution of early-type galaxies. The mean optical SED is found to evolve passively towards a mid F-star dominated spectrum by z ~ 2. We demonstrate with realistic simulations that hotter ellipticals would be readily visible if evolution progressed blueward and brightward at z > 2, following a standard IMF. The colour distributions are best fitted by a `red' IMF, deficient above ~2 M_solar and with a spread of formation in the range 1.5 < z_f < 2.5. Traditional age dating is spuri…
We reconsider the problem of the age of the stellar discs of late-type Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies by making use of a new IMF recently derived from numerical fluid dynamical simulations (Padoan, Nordlund and Jones, 1997). While a Miller-Scalo IMF cannot adequately describe the photometric properties of LSBs, when we apply the new Padoan et al. (1997) IMF to a simple exponential disc model with parameters appropriate to LSBs, we get excellent fits of the colors and color gradients. We then conclude that: a) The star formation history of LSB disc galaxies can be described by an initial…
The dwarf spheroidal galaxy in Ursa Minor is apparently dark-matter dominated, and is of very low surface brightness, with total luminosity only equal to that of a globular cluster. Indeed its dominant stellar population is old and metal-poor, very similar to that of a classical halo globular cluster in the Milky Way Galaxy. However, the environment in which its stars formed was clearly different from that in the globular clusters in the Milky Way Galaxy -- what was the stellar IMF in this external galaxy a long time ago? The fossil record of long-lived, low-mass stars contains the luminosity …
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) in star clusters is reviewed. Uncertainties in the observations are emphasized. We suggest there is a distinct possibility that cluster IMFs vary systematically with density or pressure. Dense clusters could have additional formation processes for massive stars that are not present in low density regions, making the slope of the upper mass IMF somewhat shallower in clusters. Observations of shallow IMFs in some super star clusters and in elliptical galaxies are reviewed. We also review mass segregation and the likelihood that peculiar IMFs, as in the Arc…
We have re-analysed all of the SCUBA archive data of the Orion star-forming regions. We have put together all of the data taken at different times by different groups. Consequently we have constructed the deepest submillimetre maps of these regions ever made. There are four regions that have been mapped: Orion A North & South, and Orion B North & South. We find that two of the regions, Orion A North and Orion B North, have deeper sensitivity and completeness limits, and contain a larger number of sources, so we concentrate on these two. We compare the data with archive data from the Spitzer Sp…
Observational constraints on the theory of the IMF are reviewed. These observations include the new result that star formation is very rapid, usually going from start to finish in only 1 or 2 dynamical times on a wide range of scales. This result, combined with the observation that the IMF is independent of cluster density over a factor of several hundred, implies that protostar coagulation during orbital motions in a cloud are not important for the IMF: there is not enough time. The observation that the IMF in individual clusters is about the same as the IMF in whole galaxies implies that sta…
We investigate the low-mass population of the young cluster IC348 down to the deuterium-burning limit, a fiducial boundary between brown dwarf and planetary mass objects, using a new and innovative method for the spectral classification of late-type objects. Using photometric indices, constructed from HST/NICMOS narrow-band imaging, that measure the strength of the 1.9 micron water band, we determine the spectral type and reddening for every M-type star in the field, thereby separating cluster members from the interloper population. Due to the efficiency of our spectral classification techniqu…
Over the past years observations of young and populous star clusters have shown that the stellar IMF appears to be an invariant featureless Salpeter power-law with an exponent alpha=2.35 for stars more massive than a few Msun. A consensus has also emerged that most, if not all, stars form in stellar groups and star clusters, and that the mass function of young star clusters in the solar-neighborhood and in interacting galaxies can be described, over the mass range of a few 10 Msun to 10^7 Msun, as a power-law with an exponent near beta=2. These two results imply that galactic-field IMFs for ea…
The luminosity functions (LFs) of star cluster systems (i.e. the number of clusters per luminosity interval) are vital diagnostics to probe the conditions of star cluster formation. Early studies have revealed a clear dichotomy between old globular clusters and young clusters, with the former characterised by Gaussian-shaped LFs, and the latter following a power law. Recently, this view was challenged by studies of galaxy merger remnants and post-starburst galaxies. In this paper we re-evaluate the young ($\lta$ few hundreds of Myrs, with the majority $\lta$ few tens of Myrs) star cluster syst…
Young super star clusters and young compact massive star forming regions can provide useful information on their burst properties (age, burst duration, SFR), the upper end of the IMF and yield new constraints on the evolution of massive stars. Through the study of their stellar populations we can in particular extend our knowledge on massive stars to extreme metallicities unavailable for such stars in the Local Group. Here we summarise the main results from recent studies on two metallicity extremes: Wolf-Rayet and O star populations in very metal-poor BCD, and metal-rich compact nuclear SF re…
Despite valiant efforts over nearly five decades, attempts to determine the IMF over a complete mass range for galactic field stars and in open clusters have proved difficult. Infrared imaging observations of extremely young embedded clusters coupled with Monte Carlo modeling of their luminosity functions are improving this situation and providing important new contributions to our fundamental knowledge of the IMF and its universality in both space and time.
We show that one can obtain a good fit to the measured main sequence mass function (MF) of a large sample of Galactic clusters (young and old) with a tapered Salpeter power law distribution function with an exponential truncation. The average value of the power law index is very close to Salpeter (~2.3), whereas the characteristic mass is in the range 0.1 - 0.5 Msolar and does not seem to vary in a systematic way with the present cluster parameters such as metal abundance and central concentration. However, a remarkable correlation with age is seen, in that the peak mass of young clusters incr…
We review recent determinations of the present day and initial mass functions in various components of the Galaxy, disk, spheroid, young and globular clusters. As a general feature, the IMF is well described by a power-law form for $m\ga 1 \msol$ and a lognormal form below. The extension of the disk IMF into the brown dwarf (BD) regime is in good agreement with observations and yields a disk BD number-density comparable to the stellar one $\sim 0.1 \pc3$. The IMF of young clusters is found to be consistent with the disk field IMF, providing the same correction for unresolved binaries. The sphe…
We analyse the attenuation properties of a sample of UV selected galaxies, with the use of the spectrophotometric model Grasil. In particular, we focus on the relation between dust attenuation and the reddening in the UV spectral region. We show that a realistic modelling of geometrical distribution of dust and of the different population of stars can explain the UV reddening of normal spiral galaxies also with a standard Milky Way dust. Our results clearly underline that it is fundamental to take into account that younger stars suffer a higher attenuation than older stars (the age-dependent e…
Wolf-Rayet stars are the evolved descendents of massive stars. Their extraordinary properties make them useful tracers of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in a young stellar population. I discuss how the interpretation of spectral diagnostics are complicated by the interplay of stellar, nebular, and dust properties. There is mounting observational evidence for spatial inhomogeneities in the gas and dust distribution. The interplay of these inhomogeneities can significantly alter frequently used star-formation and IMF indicators. Specific examples presented in this contribution are the s…
We present the detailed analysis of Hubble Space Telescope observations of the spatial distributions of different stellar species in two young compact star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), NGC 1805 and NGC 1818. Based on a comparison of the characteristic relaxation times in their cores and at their half-mass radii with the observed degree of mass segregation, it is most likely that significant primordial mass segregation was present in both clusters, particularly in NGC 1805. Both clusters were likely formed with very similar initial mass functions (IMFs). In fact, we provide str…
It is believed that young massive stars orbiting Sgr A* in two stellar discs on scales of 0.1-0.2 parsecs were formed either farther out in the Galaxy and then quickly migrated inward, or in situ in a massive self-gravitating disc. Comparing N-body evolution of stellar orbits with observational constraints, we set upper limits on the masses of the two stellar systems. These masses turn out to be few times lower than the expected total stellar mass estimated from the observed young high-mass stellar population and the standard galactic IMF. If these stars were formed in situ, in a massive self-…
The observed distribution of IMF shapes can be understood as statistical sampling from a universal IMF and variations that result from stellar-dynamical processes. However, young star clusters appear to have an IMF biased towards low-mass stars when compared to the Galactic disk IMF, which comprises an average populated by star-formation episodes occurring Gyrs ago. In addition to this tentative but exciting deduction, this text outlines some of the stumbling blocks hindering the production of rigorous IMF determinations, and discusses the most robust evidence for structure in it. Also, it is …
We present wide-field near-infrared (JHK) images of the young, 2 Myr IC 348 cluster taken with FLAMINGOS. We use these new data to construct an infrared census of sources, which is sensitive enough to detect a 10 Mjup brown dwarf seen through an extinction of Av=7mag. We examine the cluster's structure and relationship to the molecular cloud and construct the cluster's K band luminosity function. Using our model luminosity function algorithm, we derive the cluster's initial mass function throughout the stellar and substellar regimes and find that the IC 348 IMF is very similar to that found fo…
Using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope, we have imaged a luminous young star cluster in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946. The cluster has an absolute visual magnitude M(V)=-13.2, comparable to the brightest young `super-star clusters' in the Antennae merger galaxy. UBV colors indicate an age of about 15 Myr. The cluster has a compact core (core radius = 1.3 pc), surrounded by an extended envelope. We estimate that the effective radius (Reff) = 13 pc, but this number is uncertain because the outer parts of the cluster profile gradually merge with the genera…
The study of young stellar populations has revealed that most stars are in binary or higher order multiple systems. In this study the influence on the stellar initial mass function (IMF) of large quantities of unresolved multiple massive stars is investigated by taking into account stellar evolution and photometrically determined system masses. The models where initial masses are derived from the luminosity and colour of unresolved multiple systems show that even under extreme circumstances (100% binaries or higher order multiples) the difference between the power-law index of the mass functio…
The integrated galaxial initial mass function (IGIMF) is the relevant distribution function containing the information on the distribution of stellar remnants, the number of supernovae and the chemical enrichment history of a galaxy. Since most stars form in embedded star clusters with different masses the IGIMF becomes an integral of the assumed (universal or invariant) stellar IMF over the embedded star-cluster mass function (ECMF). For a range of reasonable assumptions about the IMF and the ECMF we find the IGIMF to be steeper (containing fewer massive stars per star) than the stellar IMF, …
We have obtained images of the Trapezium Cluster (140" x 140"; 0.3 pc x 0.3 pc) with the Hubble Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). Combining these data with new ground-based K-band spectra (R=800) and existing spectral types and photometry and the models of D'Antona & Mazzitelli, we find that the distributions of ages of comparable samples of stars in the Trapezium, rho Oph, and IC 348 indicate median ages of \~0.4 Myr for the first two regions and ~1-2 Myr for the latter. The low-mass IMFs in these sites of clustered star formation are similar over a …
We present a new census of the stellar and substellar members of the young cluster IC 348. We have obtained images at I and Z for a 42'x28' field encompassing the cluster and have combined these measurements with previous optical and near-infrared photometry. From spectroscopy of candidate cluster members appearing in these data, we have identified 122 new members, 15 of which have spectral types of M6.5-M9, corresponding to masses of 0.08-0.015 M_sun by recent evolutionary models. The latest census for IC 348 now contains a total of 288 members, 23 of which are later than M6 and thus are like…
We assess the constraints on the evolutionary models of young low-mass objects that are provided by the measurements of the companion AB Dor C by Close and coworkers and by a new comparison of model-derived IMFs of star-forming regions to the well-calibrated IMF of the solar neighborhood. After performing an independent analysis of Close's imaging and spectroscopic data for AB Dor C, we find that AB Dor C is not detected at a significant level (SN 1.2) in the SDI images when one narrow-band image is subtracted from another, but that it does appear in the individual SDI frames as well as the im…
The characteristic mass of stars at early times may have been higher than today owing to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This study proposes that (1) the testable predictions of this "CMB-IMF" hypothesis are an increase in the fraction of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with declining metallicity and an increase from younger to older populations at a single metallicity (e.g. disk to halo), and (2) these signatures are already seen in recent samples of CEMP stars and can be better tested with anticipated data. The expected spatial variation may explain discrepancies of CEMP frequ…
We are conducting a deep near-infrared (NIR) imaging survey of young embedded clusters in the extreme outer Galaxy (hereafter EOG), at the Galactic radius (R_g) of more than 18 kpc. The EOG is an excellent laboratory to study the nature of the IMF in a low-metallicity environment with a great advantage of the proximity compared to nearby dwarf galaxies, such as LMC & SMC. As a first step, we obtained deep NIR images of Digel Cloud 2 clusters at R_g ~19 kpc using the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. The observed K-band luminosity function shows that IMF in the low metallicity environment down to ~ 0.1 M…
Fifty years after Ed Salpeter's seminal paper, tremendous progress both on the observational and theoretical sides allow a fairly accurate determination of the Galactic IMF not only down to the hydrogen-burning limit but into the brown dwarf domain. The present review includes the most recent observations of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs to determine this IMF and the related Galactic mass budget. The IMF definitely exhibits a similar behaviour in various environments, disk, young and globular clusters, spheroid. Small scale dissipation of large scale compressible MHD turbulence seems to be t…
The stellar initial mass function (IMF) integrated over an entire galaxy is an integral over all separate star-formation events. Since most stars form in star clusters with different masses the integrated IMF becomes an integral of the (universal or invariant) canonical stellar IMF over the star-cluster mass function. This integrated IMF is steeper (contains fewer massive stars per G-type star) than the canonical stellar IMF. Furthermore, observations indicate a relation between the star-formation rate of a galaxy and the most luminous stellar cluster in it. This empirical relation can be tran…
Eta Chamaeleontis is a unique young (~9 Myr) association with 18 systems concentrated in a radius of ~35 arcmin, i.e. 1pc at the cluster distance of 97pc. No other members have been found up to 1.5 degrees from the cluster centre. The cluster mass function is consistent with the IMF of other rich young open clusters in the higher mass range but shows a clear deficit of low mass stars and brown dwarfs with no objects below 0.1Msun. The aim of this paper is to test whether this peculiar mass function could result from dynamical evolution despite the young age of the cluster. We performed N-body …
Competitive accretion occurs when stars in a cluster accrete from a shared reservoir of gas. The competition arises due to the relative attraction of stars as a function of their mass and location in the cluster. The low relative motions of the stars and gas in young, gas dominated clusters results in a tidal limit to the accretion whereas in the stellar dominated cluster cores, the high relative velocities results in Bondi-Hoyle accretion. The combination of these two accretion processes produces a two power-law IMF with $γ\approx -1.5$, for low-mass stars which accrue their mass in the gas d…
Based on the CCD observations of remote young open clusters NGC 2383, NGC 2384, NGC 4103, NGC 4755, NGC 7510 and Hogg 15, we constructed their observed luminosity functions (LFs). The observed LFs are corrected for field star contamination determined with the help of galactic star count model. In the case of Hogg 15 and NGC 2383 we also considered the additional contamination from neighbouring clusters NGC 4609 and NGC 2384 respectively. These corrections provided the realistic pattern of cluster LF in the vicinity of the MS turn on point and at fainter magnitudes, revealed the so called H-fea…
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has been instrumental in the discovery of large numbers of extragalactic young massive star clusters (YMCs), often assumed to be proto-globular clusters (GCs). As a consequence, the field of YMC formation and evolution is thriving, generating major breakthroughs as well as controversies on annual (or shorter) time-scales. Here, I review the long-term survival chances of YMCs, hallmarks of intense starburst episodes often associated with violent galaxy interactions. In the absence of significant external perturbations, the key factor determining a cluster's long…
We estimate the dynamical masses of several young (~10 Myr) massive star clusters in two interacting galaxies, NGC 4038/4039 ("The Antennae") and NGC 1487, under the assumption of virial equilibrium. These are compared with photometric mass estimates from K-band photometry and assuming a standard Kroupa IMF. The clusters were selected to have near-infrared colors dominated by red supergiants, and hence to be old enough to have survived the earliest phases of cluster evolution when the interstellar medium is rapidly swept out from the cluster, supported by the fact that there is no obvious Halp…
We present Near-IR photometry of the Arches cluster, a young and massive stellar cluster near the Galactic center. We have analyzed the high resolution (FWHM 0.2") H and K' band images in the Galactic Center Demonstration Science Data Set, which were obtained with the Gemini/Hokupa's adaptive optics (AO) system. We present the color-magnitude diagram, the luminosity function and the initial mass function (IMF) of the stars in the Arches cluster in comparison with the HST/NICMOS data. The IMF slope for the range of 1.0< log(M/M_sun) <2.1 is estimated to be Gamma = -0.79+/-0.16, in good agreemen…
There has been recent speculation (Davies & King 2005) that the cores of intermediate-mass stars stripped of their envelopes by tidal interaction with the supermassive black hole in the Galactic centre could form a population observationally similar to the so-called Sgr A* cluster or `S' stars, which have close eccentric orbits around the hole. We model the evolution of such stars, and show that the more luminous end of the population may indeed appear similar to young B stars within the observational limits of the Galactic Centre region. Whether some or all of these cluster stars can be accou…
We report the result of a study in which we have used very deep broadband V and I WFPC2 images of the R136 cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud from the HST archive, to sample the luminosity function below the detection limit of 2.8 Mo previously reached. In these new deeper images, we detect stars down to a limiting magnitude of m_F555W = 24.7 (~ 1 magnitude deeper than previous works), and identify a population of red stars evenly distributed in the surrounding of the R136 cluster. A comparison of our color-magnitude diagram with recentely computed evolutionary tracks indicates that these r…
The study of young star cluster (YSC) systems, preferentially in starburst and merging galaxies, has seen great interest in the recent past, as it provides important input to models of star formation. However, even some basic properties (like the luminosity function [LF]) of YSC systems are still under debate. Here we study the photometric properties of the YSC system in the nearest major merger system, the Antennae galaxies. We find evidence for the existence of a statistically significant turnover in the LF.
Based on a deep optical CCD (UBV(RI)_C) photometric survey and on the Two-Micron All-Sky-Survey (2MASS) data we derived the main parameters of the open cluster NGC 2401. We found this cluster is placed at 6.3 $\pm$ 0.5 kpc (V_O - M_V = 14.0 \pm 0.2) from the Sun and is 25 Myr old, what allows us to identify NGC 2401 as a member of the young population belonging to the innermost side of the extension of the Norma-Cygnus spiral--arm in the Third Galactic Quadrant. A spectroscopic study of the emission star LSS 440 that lies in the cluster area revealed it is a B0Ve star; however, we could not co…
We review recent high spatial resolution millimeter continuum and spectral line observations of (proto-)cluster regions. These observations reveal that the mass distribution of prestellar cores is consistent with the initial mass function for field stars suggesting that the IMF is connected to the molecular clouds structure or the cloud fragmentation processes, rather than the details of the star formation mechanism. We discuss the evidence for at-birth subclustering independently obtained for two separate protoclusters. The presence of subclustering within coherent subclumps suggests that the…
Star clusters are observed to form in a highly compact state and with low star-formation efficiencies. If the residual gas is expelled on a dynamical time the clusters disrupt thereby (i) feeding a hot kinematical stellar component into their host-galaxy's field population, and (ii) if the gas-evacuation time-scale depends on cluster mass, then a power-law embedded-cluster mass function transforms within ten to a few dozen Myr to a mass function with a turnover near 10^5 M_sun, thereby possibly explaining this universal empirical feature.
We present high-resolution echelle spectroscopy, obtained with the UVES spectrograph on ESO/VLT, of two luminous star clusters in the metal-poor blue compact galaxy ESO 338-IG04 at a distance of 37.5 Mpc. Cross-correlating with template stars, we obtain line-of-sight velocity dispersions of 33 and 17 km/s. By combining with size estimates from Hubble Space Telescope images we infer dynamical masses of 1.3x10^7 and 4.0x10^6 solar masses for the two clusters, making them among the most massive known. The less massive cluster is the faintest cluster for which a dynamical mass has yet been obtaine…
Cool L- and T-type objects were discovered first as companions to stars in 1988 and 1995, respectively. A certain example of the yet cooler Y-type spectral class (Teff <~ 500K?) has not been seen. Recent infrared imaging observations of stars and brown dwarfs indicate that substellar companions with large semi-major axes and with masses less than the brown dwarf/giant planet dividing line (~13.5 Mj) are rare. Theoretical considerations of Jeans mass fragmentation of molecular clouds are consistent with this minimum mass cutoff and also with the semi-major axis (hundreds of AU) characteristic o…
We demonstrate that it is crucial to account for the evolution of the starburst population in order to derive reliable numbers of O stars from integrated spectra for burst ages t > 2 - 3 Myr. In these cases the method of Vacca & Conti (1992) and Vacca (1994) systematically underestimates the number of O stars. Therefore the current WR/O number ratios in Wolf-Rayet (WR) galaxies are overestimated. This questions recent claims about flat IMF slopes (alpha ~ 1-2) in these objects. If the evolution of the burst is properly treated we find that the observations are indeed compatible with a Salpeter…
We report new results in our continuing study of the unique compact (1 pc extent), nearby (d = 97 pc), young (t = 9 Myr) stellar cluster dominated by the B9 star eta Chamaeleontis. An optical photometric survey spanning 1.3 x 1.3 pc adds two M5-M5.5 weak-lined T Tauri (WTT) stars to the cluster inventory which is likely to be significantly complete for primaries with masses > 0.15 M_sun. The cluster now consists of 17 primaries and approximately 9 secondaries lying within 100 AU of their primaries. The apparent distribution of 9:7:1 single:binary:triple systems shows 2-4 x higher multiplicity …
(shortened) In this contribution an average or Galactic-field IMF is defined, stressing that there is evidence for a change in the power-law index at only two masses: near 0.5 Msun and 0.08 Msun. Using this supposed universal IMF, the uncertainty inherent to any observational estimate of the IMF is investigated, by studying the scatter introduced by Poisson noise and the dynamical evolution of star clusters. It is found that this apparent scatter reproduces quite well the observed scatter in power-law index determinations, thus defining the fundamental limit within which any true variation bec…
The observed masses of the most massive stars do not surpass about 150Msun. This may either be a fundamental upper mass limit which is defined by the physics of massive stars and/or their formation, or it may simply reflect the increasing sparsity of such very massive stars so that observing even higher-mass stars becomes unlikely in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. It is shown here that if the stellar initial mass function (IMF) is a power-law with a Salpeter exponent (alpha=2.35) for massive stars then the richest very young cluster R136 seen in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) should c…
