We present new results from our survey of diffuse O VI-emitting gas in the interstellar medium with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Background observations obtained since 2005 have yielded eleven new O VI detections of 3-sigma significance, and archival searches have revealed two more. An additional 15 sight lines yield interesting upper limits. Combined with previous results, these observations reveal the large-scale structure of the O VI-bearing gas in the quadrant of the sky centered on the Magellanic Clouds. The most prominent feature is a layer of low-velocity O VI emission extending more than 70 degrees from the Galactic plane. At low latitudes (|b| < 30 degrees), the emission comes from narrow, high-density conductive interfaces in the local ISM. At high latitudes, the emission is from extended, low-density regions in the Galactic halo. We also detect O VI emission from the interface region of the Magellanic System, a structure recently identified from H I observations. These are the first detections of emission from high-ionization species in the Magellanic System outside of the Clouds themselves.
I review the five years of progress by FUSE on current topics in the interstellar medium. FUSE's sensitivity and unique access to the far ultraviolet allow investigators to solve problems in all phases of the interstellar medium. I describe FUSE's contributions in four major areas: 1) the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM), 2) the hot phase (O VI), 3) the cold phase (H_2), and 4) interstellar gas abundances. I devote particular attention to the common themes of ISM phase interactions and changes with metallicity. As a whole, these results show that FUSE is the most powerful machine ever to addre…
We report about a suprisingly good correlation between the equivalent width of the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 8620 Ang and the interstellar reddening. Such a correlation offers bright prospects in using the 8620 Ang DIB as a tracer of the exctinction through the Galaxy in the context of GAIA, approved Cornerstone mission by ESA.
A critical review of the very long-standing problem of the diffuse interstellar bands is presented with emphasis on spectroscopic aspects of observational, modelling and laboratory-based research. Some research themes and ideas that could be explored theoretically and experimentally are discussed. The article is based on the Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy Review Lecture presented at the 60th Ohio State University International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, June 2005.
The carriers of diffuse interstellar bands are still mysterious species. There exist many arguments that diffuse bands at 5797 and 5850 angstroms have the same carrier. Using high-resolution spectra of few dozens of reddened stars we have searched mutual correlation between intensities of considered bands. Results of our analysis indicate that 5797 and 5850 really tend to have the same carrier.
The far-ultraviolet spectrum of the DAO White Dwarf LS V+4621, the exciting star of the possible planetary nebula Sh 2-216,is strongly contaminated by absorption features from the interstellar medium (ISM). For an ongoing spectral analysis, we aim to extract the pure photospheric spectrum in order to identify and model metal lines of species which are not detectable in the near-ultraviolet wavelength range. We have modeled the interstellar absorption precisely and considered it for the simulation of the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) observation. A state-of-the-art NLTE model-at…
We have used observations taken under the FUSE S405/S505 channel realignment program to explore the diffuse FUV (1000 - 1200 Å) radiation field. Of the 71 independent locations in that program, we have observed a diffuse signal in 32, ranging in brightness from 1600 photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ Å$^{-1}$ to a maximum of $2.9 \times 10^5$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ Å$^{-1} in Orion. The FUSE data confirm that the diffuse FUV sky is patchy with regions of intense emission, usually near bright stars, but also with dark regions, even at low Galactic latitudes. We find a weak corre…
We present a model for the hydrogenation states of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the diffuse interstellar medium. First, we study the abundance of hydrogenation and charge states of PAHs due to photo-ionization, photo-dissociation in the interstellar UV field, electron recombination and chemical reactions between PAH cations and H or H_2. For PAH cations, we find that the dehydrogenation effects are dominant. The hydrogenation state of PAHs depends strongly on the H density, the size of the molecule and UV field. In diffuse clouds with low H density and normal UV radiation, PAHs c…
The lambda Bootis stars, a group of late B to early F-type population I stars, have surface abundances that resemble the general metal depletion pattern found in the interstellar medium. Inspired by the recent result that the fundamental parameters of these peculiar stars differ in no respect from a comparison sample of normal stars, the hypothesis of an interaction between a star and a diffuse interstellar cloud is considered as a possible explanation of the peculiar abundance pattern. It is found that such a scenario is able to explain the selective accretion of interstellar gas depleted in …
We investigate the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) spectrum in the interstellar medium of M31. The DEIMOS spectrograph of the W. M. Keck observatory was used to make optical spectroscopic observations of two supergiant stars, MAG 63885 and MAG 70817, in the vicinity of the OB78 association in M31 where the metallicity is approximately equal to solar. The 5780, 5797, 6203, 6283 and 6613 DIBs are detected in both sightlines at velocities matching the M31 interstellar Na I absorption. The spectra are classified and interstellar reddenings are derived for both stars. Diffuse interstellar band (DIB…
The abundance of both amorphous and crystalline silicates in very small grains is limited by the fact that the 10 micron silicate emission feature is not detected in the diffuse ISM. On the basis of the observed IR emission spectrum for the diffuse ISM, the observed ultraviolet extinction curve, and the 10 micron silicate absorption profile, we obtain upper limits on the abundances of ultrasmall (a < 15 Angstrom) amorphous and crystalline silicate grains. Contrary to previous work, as much as ~20% of interstellar Si could be in a < 15 Angstrom silicate grains without violating observational co…
We present new Arecibo 21-cm line measurements of the temperatures of interstellar gas. Our temperatures for the Cold Neutral Medium (CNM) are significantly lower than previous single-dish results and in very good accord with theoretical models. For warm gas at T > 500 K, we find a significant fraction of gas (>47%) to lie in the thermally unstable region 500 ---> 5000 K; moreover, about 60% of all the neutral atomic gas has T > 500 K. Large amounts of thermally unstable gas are not allowed in theoretical models of the global interstellar medium.
We report the detection of 11 Rydberg bands of CO in FUSE spectra of the sight line toward HD203374A. Eight of these electronic bands are seen in the interstellar medium for the first time. Our simultaneous fit of five non-Rydberg A-X bands together with the strongest Rydberg band of CO, C-X (0-0), yields a 4-component cloud structure toward the stellar target. With this model we synthesize the other Rydberg bands in order to derive their oscillator strengths. We find that the strength of some bands was underestimated in previously published results from laboratory measurements. The implicatio…
This paper proposes a short review on our knowledge on the dust emission in the diffuse sky from far-IR to the mm wavelength. The current understanding is based mainly on the analysis of the COBE data combined with several templates of gas tracers (HI and Halpha). In the millimeter, emphasis is given to the new WMAP results on the so-called ``anomalous microwave emission''.
FUSE spectra of the four brightest H II regions in M 33 show absorption by interstellar gas in the Galaxy and in M 33. On three lines of sight molecular hydrogen in M 33 is detected. This is the first measurement of diffuse H_2 in absorption in a Local Group galaxy other than the Magellanic Clouds. A quantitative analysis is difficult because of the low signal to noise ratio and the systematic effects produced by having multiple objects in the FUSE aperture. We use the M 33 FUSE data to demonstrate in a more general manner the complexity of interpreting interstellar absorption line spectra tow…
Using the correlation between the equivalent width of the diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 8620 A and the interstellar reddening reported by Munari (2000) GAIA could directly trace the interstellar extinction throughout the Galaxy. We checked for the magnitude and distance limitations of this method in 42 Galactic directions by simulating the RVS data on the stellar sample provided by the model of stellar population synthesis of the Galaxy (Robin et al. 2003). The simulation indicates that the imprint of the 8620 A DIB will be detected in the RVS spectra of stars with magnitudes up to V~16 w…
We examine observational characteristics of multi-phase turbulent flows in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) using a synthetic radiation field of atomic and molecular lines. We consider the multi-phase ISM which is formed by thermal instability under the irradiation of UV photons with moderate visual extinction $A_V\sim 1$. Radiation field maps of C$^{+}$, C$^0$, and CO line emissions were generated by calculating the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (nonLTE) level populations from the results of high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of diffuse ISM models. By analyzing synthetic radi…
We present the first results of a systematic search for Diffuse Interstellar Bands in a carefully selected sample of post-AGB stars observed with high resolution optical spectroscopy. These stars are shown to be ideal targets to study this old, intriguing astrophysical problem. Our results suggest that the carrier(s) of these bands may not be present in the circumstellar environments of these evolved stars. The implications of the results obtained on the identification of the still unknown carrier(s) are discussed.
Although damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems are usually considered metal-poor, it has been suggested that this could be due to observational bias against metal-enriched absorbers. I review recent surveys to quantify the particular issue of dust obscuration bias and demonstrate that there is currently no compelling observational evidence to support a widespread effect due to extinction. On the other hand, a small sub-set of DLAs may be metal-rich and I review some recent observations of these metal-rich absorbers and the detection of diffuse interstellar bands in one DLA at z ~ 0.5.
Analysis of high spectral resolution observations of the $λ$6614 diffuse interstellar band (DIB) line profile show systematic variations in the positions of the peaks in the substructure of the profile. These variations -- shown here for the first time -- can be understood most naturally in the framework of rotational contours of large molecules, where the variations are caused by changes in the rotational excitation temperature. We show that the rotational excitation temperature for the DIB carrier is likely significantly lower than the gas kinetic temperature -- indicating that for this part…
Surprisingly large column densities of H3+ have been detected using infrared absorption spectroscopy in seven diffuse cloud sightlines (Cygnus OB2 12, Cygnus OB2 5, HD 183143, HD 20041, WR 104, WR 118, and WR 121), demonstrating that H3+ is ubiquitous in the diffuse interstellar medium. Using the standard model of diffuse cloud chemistry, our H3+ column densities imply unreasonably long path lengths (~1 kpc) and low densities (~3 cm^-3). Complimentary millimeter-wave, infrared, and visible observations of related species suggest that the chemical model is incorrect and that the number density …
The hypothesis that the cyanomethyl anion CH2CN- is responsible for the relatively narrow diffuse interstellar band (DIB) at 8037.8 +- 0.15 Angstroms is examined with reference to new observational data. The 0_0^0 absorption band arising from the ^1B_1 - X ^1A' transition from the electronic ground state to the first dipole-bound state of the anion is calculated for a rotational temperature of 2.7 K using literature spectroscopic parameters and results in a rotational contour with a peak wavelength of 8037.78 Angstroms. By comparison with diffuse band and atomic line absorption spectra of eigh…
One of the keys to interpreting the character and evolution of interstellar matter in the galaxy is understanding the distribution of the low density hot (10^5 K -10^6 K) phase of the interstellar medium (ISM). This phase is much more difficult to observe than the cooler high density components of the ISM because of its low density and lack of easily observable tracers. Because gas of this temperature emits mainly in the far ultraviolet (912 angstrom - 1800 angstroms) and extreme ultraviolet (80 angstrom - 912 angstrom), and (for gas hotter than 10^6 K) X-rays, observations in these bands can …
We have used the ionisation equilibrium equation to derive the electron density in interstellar clouds in the direction to 13 stars. A linear relation was found, that allows the determination of the electron density from the Mg I and Mg II column densities in diffuse clouds. The comparison of normalised equivalent width of 12 DIBs with the electron density shows that the DIBs equivalent width do not change with electron density varying in the range ne=0.01-2.5 cm^-3. Therefore the DIBs carriers (1) can be observed only in one ionisation stage, or (2) the DIBs are arising in cloud regions (eg. …
We present preliminary results from an ongoing program devoted to a study of small scale structure in the spatial distribution of molecular gas. Our work is based on multi-epoch FUSE and visible observations of HD34078. A detailed comparison of H2, CH and CH+ absorption lines is performed. No short term variations are seen (except for highly excited H2) but long-term changes in N(CH) are clearly detected when comparing our data to spectra taken about 10 years ago.
As part of an extensive survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs), we have obtained optical spectra of the moderately reddened B5V star HD 62542, which is known to have an unusual UV extinction curve of the type usually identified with dark clouds. The typically strongest of the commonly catalogued DIBs covered by the spectra -- those at 5780, 5797, 6270, 6284, and 6614 A -- are essentially absent in this line of sight, in marked contrast with other lines of sight of similar reddening. We compare the HD 62542 line of sight with others exhibiting a range of extinction properties and molecular…
Diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) still await an explanation. One expects that some progress in this field will be possible when all the known DIBs are divided into families in such a way that only one carrier is responsible for all bands belonging to the given family. Analysing high resolution optical spectra of reddened stars we try to find out spectroscopic families for two prominent DIBs, at 5780 and 5797 angstroms. Among the DIBs, observed in the spectral range from 5590 to 6830 angstroms, we have found 8 candidates to belong to 5780 spectroscopic family and the other 12 DIBs candidating …
Extended Red Emission (ERE) has been detected in many dusty astrophysical objects and this raises the question: Is ERE present only in discrete objects or is it an observational feature of all dust, i.e. present in the diffuse interstellar medium? In order to answer this question, we determined the blue and red intensities of the radiation from the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) and examined the red intensity for the presence of an excess above that expected for scattered light. The diffuse ISM blue and red intensities were obtained by subtracting the integrated star and galaxy intensities …
Looking for spectroscopic families in the whole set of discovered diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is an indirect trial of solving the problem of DIBs' carriers. Basing on optical high resolution spectra, covering the range from 5655 to 7020 Å, we found few relatively strong DIBs which are not well correlated one with another and therefore they may play a role of representatives of separate spectroscopic families. In the next step we indicated DIBs which tend to follow the behaviour of their representatives. As a result of our analysis we propose few, probably not complete yet, spectroscopic …
We use ultraviolet spectra of Capella from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellites to study interstellar absorption lines from the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). Measurements of these lines are used to empirically determine the ionization states of carbon, nitrogen, and silicon in the LIC, for comparison with the predictions of theoretical photoionization models. We find that the observed ionization states are consistent with previously published photoionization predictions. Total abundances are determined for the elements mentioned above,…
Transient microstructure in the diffuse interstellar medium has been observed towards galactic and extragalactic sources for decades, usually in lines of atoms and ions, and, more recently, in molecular lines. Evidently, there is a molecular component to the transient microstructure. In this paper we explore the chemistry that may arise in such microstructure. We use a PDR code to model the conditions of relatively high density, low temperature, very low visual extinction and very short elapsed time that are appropriate for these objects. We find that there is a well defined region of paramete…
One way to better apprehend the problem of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is to search for correlations between the bands in a large sample of spectra towards various lines of sight: a strict correlation may imply that a common carrier is at the origin of the bands, whereas a non-correlation means that different species are involved. We propose this observational test for 10 DIBs collected in up to 62 Galactic lines of sight. Strong DIBs do not strictly correlate, and sometimes the correlation is very poor. Only one example of a strict correlation has been found in our sample between the DI…
The interstellar abundances of D I, N I, and O I in the local ISM are studied us ing high-resolution spectra of four hot white dwarfs. The spectra of GD 246, WD 2331$-$475, HZ 21, and Lan 23 were obtained with the {\it Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer} FUSE in the wavelength range 905-1187 A. The line of sight to GD 246 probes the Local Interstellar Cloud and at least one other H I cloud inside the Local Bubble, which contains most of the gas seen al ong this line of sight. The column densities of H I, C II*, S II, and Si II are measured using archival STIS echelle-mode observations. The…
We present initial results from the first optical spectroscopic survey of high latitude Galactic cirrus clouds. The observed shape of the cirrus spectrum does not agree with that of scattered ambient Galactic starlight. This mismatch can be explained by the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) in the diffuse interstellar medium, as found in many other astronomical objects, probably caused by photoluminescence of hydrocarbons. The integrated ERE intensity, I_ERE \approx 1.2 x 10^{-5} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} sr^{-1}, is roughly a third of the scattered light intensity, consistent with recent color…
Observationally, both the 3.4micron aliphatic hydrocarbon C--H stretching absorption feature and the 9.7micron amorphous silicate Si--O stretching absorption feature show considerable variations from the local diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) to Galactic center (GC): both the ratio of the visual extinction (A_V) to the 9.7micron Si--O optical depth (\tausil) and the ratio of A_V to the 3.4micron C--H optical depth (\tauahc) of the solar neighborhood local diffuse ISM are about twice as much as that of the GC. In this work, we try to explain these variations in terms of a porous dust model con…
We present a theoretical investigation of the chemistry of fluorine-bearing molecules in diffuse and dense interstellar gas clouds. The chemistry of interstellar fluorine is qualitatively different from that of any other element, because - unlike the neutral atoms of any other element found in diffuse or dense molecular clouds - atomic fluorine undergoes an exothermic reaction with molecular hydrogen. Over a wide range of conditions attained within interstellar gas clouds, the product of that reaction - hydrogen fluoride - is predicted to be the dominant gas-phase reservoir of interstellar flu…
We report the detection of diffuse O VI 1032, 1038 A emission in a 29-ksec observation centered on the Coma Cluster (l = 57.6, b = +88.0) and an 11-ksec observation toward Virgo (l = 284.2, b = +74.5) through the low-resolution (30"x30") aperture of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The emission lines have a redshift near zero and are thus produced by gas in our own Galaxy. Observed surface brightnesses are 2000 +/- 600 photons/cm2/s/sr for each of the O VI components in the Coma spectrum and 2900 +/- 700 and 1700 +/- 700 photons/cm2/s/sr for the 1032 and 1038 A lines, respect…
A novel theoretical method is developed to study the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon - diffuse interstellar band (PAH-DIB) hypothesis. In this method, a computer program is used to enumerate all PAH molecules with up to a specific number of fused benzene rings. Fast quantum chemical calculations are then employed to calculate the electronic transition energies, oscillator strengths, and rotational constants of these molecules. An electronic database of all PAHs with up to any specific number of benzene rings can be constructed this way. Comparison of the electronic transition energies, oscilla…
We confirm and discuss recently discovered cold HI clouds with column densities among the lowest ever detected. The column densities of Cold Neutral Medium (CNM) towards 3C286 and 3C287 are ~10^18 cm^-2, below an observational lower limit, and also below tiny-scale-atomic clouds detected by VLBI and time-variable profiles against pulsars. These column densities are close to the minimum imposed by thermal evaporation. The fractions of the CNM to total HI towards 3C286 and 3C287 are ~4% and <2%, respectively. We discuss the CNM fraction and the CNM clouds in relation to several theoretical model…
We have obtained deep HI observations in the direction of 22 continuum sources without previously detected cold neutral medium (CNM). 18 CNM clouds were detected with the typical HI column density of $3\times10^{18}$ cm$^{-2}$. Our surprisingly high detection rate suggests that clouds with low HI column densities are quite common in the interstellar medium. These clouds appear to represent an extension of the traditional CNM cloud population, yet have sizes in hundreds to thousands of AUs. We present properties of the newly-detected CNM sample, and discuss several theoretical avenues important…
Diffuse emission from the Milky Way dominates the gamma-ray sky. About 80% of the high-energy luminosity of the Milky Way comes from processes in the interstellar medium. The Galactic diffuse emission traces interactions of energetic particles, primarily protons and electrons, with the interstellar gas and radiation field, thus delivering information about cosmic-ray spectra and interstellar mass in distant locations. Additionally, the Galactic diffuse emission is the celestial foreground for the study of gamma-ray point sources and the extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray emission. We report on th…
In 1998 Gordon, Witt and Friedmann wrote of detection of ERE in diffuse galactic light at high latitudes. The comparaison of diffuse galactic light and starlight over a few regions of the sky cannot, according to the authors, be fully explained by extinction of starlight. 50% of the red interstellar light needs to come from an interstellar emitting process. Different aspects of Gordon et al.'s data reduction work, and of the model which supports their assertion, will be considered here. Analysis of the 100 micron emission of the regions Gordon et al. have studied will prove that the color of t…
The source of fluorine is not well understood, although core-collapse supernovae, Wolf-Rayet stars, and asymptotic giant branch stars have been suggested. A search for evidence of the nu process during Type II supernovae is presented. Absorption from interstellar F I is seen in spectra of HD 208440 and HD 209339A acquired with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. In order to extract the column density for F I from the line at 954 A, absorption from H2 has to be modeled and then removed. Our analysis indicates that for H2 column densities less than about 3 x 10^20 cm^-2, the amount of F …
We have used archival FUSE data to complete a survey of interstellar HD in 41 lines of sight with a wide range of extinctions. This follow up to an earlier survey was made to further assess the utility of HD as a cosmological probe; to analyze the HD formation process; and to see what trends with other interstellar properties were present in the data. We employed the curve-of-growth method, supported by line profile fitting, to derive accurate column densities of HD. We find that the N(HD)/2N(H2) ratio is substantially lower than the atomic D/H ratio and conclude that the molecular ratio has n…
We present a quantitative model for the infrared emission from dust in the diffuse interstellar medium. The model consists of a mixture of amorphous silicate grains and carbonaceous grains, each with a wide size distribution ranging from molecules containing tens of atoms to large grains > 1 um in diameter. We assume that the carbonaceous grains have polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-like properties at very small sizes, and graphitic properties for radii a > 50 A. On the basis of recent laboratory studies and guided by astronomical observations, we propose "astronomical" absorption cross s…
The smallest polyatomic carbon chain, C$_{3}$, has been identified in interstellar clouds (A$_{v}\sim$1 mag) towards $ζ$ Ophiuchi, 20 Aquilae, and $ζ$ Persei by detection of the origin band in its $A^{1}Π_{u}-X^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ electronic transition, near 4052Å. Individual rotational lines were resolved up to $J$=30 enabling the rotational level column densities and temperature distributions to be determined. The inferred limits for the total column densities ($\sim$1 to 2$\times10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$) offer a strong incentive to laboratory and astrophysical searches for the longer carbon chains. Con…
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) is a NASA astronomy mission that will explore the 905-1187 A wavelength region at high spectral resolution. Funded by NASA's Explorer Program, this Origins mission is scheduled for a 1999 launch and at least three years of operations. The development of FUSE is being led by the Johns Hopkins University, with major contributions to the program from the University of Colorado, the University of California-Berkeley, the space agencies of Canada and France, and corporate partners. FUSE will have approximately 10,000 times the sensitivity of its pio…
Using the new high resolution (~ 8 km/s) echelle spectrograph on the 3.5-m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory, we have begun a high sensitivity survey of the diffuse interstellar bands in a large sample of reddened stars. Now that we are two years into this long-term survey, our sample includes over 20 reddened stars which show at least one of the DIBs that had been suggested to be caused by C7-, based on the gas phase measurement of the C7- spectrum by J. P. Maier's group. The high quality astronomical data from this larger sample of stars, along with the spectroscopic constants from t…
The FUSE far-ultraviolet interstellar spectra toward seven targets in NGC 6231 show that the molecules H_2, HD, and CO as well as various atomic species are distributed in several clouds. The main absorption component found on the sight lines lies in the Lupus cloud region at a distance of about 150 pc, and there is a weaker second one, presumably in the Sco OB1 shell surrounding NGC 6231 (d~1.8 kpc). H_2 excitation modelling is used to constrain the radiation field and the density in the gas; HD is used to estimate the abundance of H+. The small angular separation of the target stars allows c…
We report on new FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the most metal-poor blue compact dwarf galaxy I Zw 18. The new data represent an improvement over previous FUSE spectra by a factor of 1.7 in the signal-to-noise. Together with a larger spectral coverage (917-1188 angstroms), this allows us to characterize absorption lines in the interstellar medium with unprecedented accuracy. The kinematics averaged over the large sampled region shows no clear evidence of gas inflows or outflows. The H I absorption is interstellar with a column density of 2.2 (+0.6,-0.5} * 10^21 cm^(-2). A conservative 3 sigma upp…
We present a deuterium abundance analysis of the line of sight toward the white dwarf WD2211-495 observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Numerous interstellar lines are detected on the continuum of the stellar spectrum. A thorough analysis was performed through the simultaneous fit of interstellar absorption lines detected in the four FUSE channels of multiple observations with different slits. We excluded all saturated lines in order to reduce possible systematic errors on the column density measurements. We report the determination of the average interstellar D/O and…
(Abridged) The formation of molecular clouds (MCs) from the diffuse interstellar gas appears to be a necessary step for star formation, as young stars invariably occur within them. However, the mechanisms controlling the formation of MCs remain controversial. In this contribution, we focus on their formation in compressive flows driven by interstellar turbulence and large-scale gravitational instability. Turbulent compression driven by supernovae appears insufficient to explain the bulk of cloud and star formation. Rather, gravity must be important at all scales, driving the compressive flows …
We present spectroscopic VLT/UVES observations of two emerging supernovae, the Type Ia SN 2001el and the Type II SN 2003hn, in the spiral galaxy NGC 1448. Our high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra display atomic lines of Ca II, Na I, Ti II and K I in the host galaxy. In the line of sight towards SN 2001el, we also detect over a dozen diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) within NGC 1448. These DIBs have strengths comparable to low reddening galactic lines of sight, albeit with some variations. In particular, a good match is found with the line of sight towards the sigma type diffuse clo…
$C_2$ molecule is sometimes considered as a crucial component of carriers of some diffuse interstellar bands. Using UV data achieved by spectrometer STIS fed with HST we detected interstellar $C_2$ lines for few reddened target stars. We tried to verify the idea that intensity of $C_2$ lines around 2313 Åis correlated with some diffuse interstellar bands.
Several of the current and next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments have polarimetric capability, promising to add to the finesse of precision cosmology. One of the contaminating Galactic foregrounds is thermal emission by dust. Since optical interstellar polarization is commonly seen, from differential extinction by aligned aspherical dust particles, it is expected that thermal emission from these grains will be polarized. Indeed, in the Galactic plane and in dark (molecular) clouds, dust emission in the infrared and submillimetre has been measured to be polarized. It see…
In this paper we make a quantitative study of the hypothesis that the diffuse H-alpha emitted from the discs of spiral galaxies owes its origin to the ionizing photons escaping from HII regions. We use the H-alpha measurements of the complete set of HII regions in the spiral NGC 157, for which an HI density map was available, to derive a family of models which predict the ionizing photon distribution in the disc of this galaxy. The predicted diffuse H-alpha surface brightness distributions from our models were compared with the observed distributions showing that, in general terms, the hypothe…
We present a survey of diffuse O VI emission in the interstellar medium obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Spanning 5.5 years of FUSE observations, from launch through 2004 December, our data set consists of 2925 exposures along 183 sight lines, including all of those with previously-published O VI detections. The data were processed using an implementation of CalFUSE v3.1 modified to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio and velocity scale of spectra from an aperture-filling source. Of our 183 sight lines, 73 show O VI 1032 emission, 29 at > 3-sigma significance. Si…
"Diffuse" gamma rays consist of several components: truly diffuse emission from the interstellar medium, the extragalactic background, whose origin is not firmly established yet, and the contribution from unresolved and faint Galactic point sources. One approach to unravel these components is to study the diffuse emission from the interstellar medium, which traces the interactions of high energy particles with interstellar gas and radiation fields. Because of its origin such emission is potentially able to reveal much about the sources and propagation of cosmic rays. The extragalactic backgrou…
FUSE spectra of the white dwarf stars G191-B2B, GD 394, WD 2211-495 and WD 2331-475 cover the absorption features out of the ground electronic states of N I, N II, N III, O I and Ar I in the far ultraviolet, providing new insights on the origin of the partial ionization of the Local Interstellar Medium (LISM), and for the case of G191-B2B, the interstellar cloud that immediately surrounds the solar system. Toward these targets the interstellar abundances of Ar I, and sometimes N I, are significantly below their cosmic abundances relative to H I. In the diffuse interstellar medium, these elemen…
Using linear kinetic plasma theory the relation between electron density and magnetic field fluctuations for low-frequency plasma waves for Maxwellian background distribution functions of arbitrary temperatures in an uniform magnetic field is derived. By taking the non-relativistic temperature limit this relation is calculated for the diffuse intercloud medium in our Galaxy. The diffuse intercloud medium is the dominant phase of the interstellar medium with respect to radio wave propagation, dispersion and rotation measure studies. The differences between the relation of electron density and m…
(Abridged) We have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to search for H_2 absorption in five starburst galaxies: NGC 1705, NGC 3310, NGC 4214, M83 (NGC 5236), and NGC 5253. We tentatively detect weak absorption by H_2 in M83 and NGC 5253, and set upper limits on the H_2 column density in the other galaxies. Conservative upper limits on the mass of molecular gas detected with FUSE are many orders of magnitude lower than the H_2 mass inferred from CO emission. This indicates that almost all of the H_2 is in the form of clouds with N(H_2)>10^20 cm^-2 that are opaque to far-UV li…
