This paper explores features of an idealized mathematical machine (algorithm) that would be capable of reconstructing the gravitational nature (the multipolar structure or spacetime metric) of a compact object, by observing gravitational radiation emitted by a small object that orbits and spirals into it. An outline is given of the mathematical developments that must be carried out in order to construct such a machine.
The problem of obtaining an explicit representation for the fourth invariant of geodesic motion (generalized Carter constant) of an arbitrary stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetime generated from an Ernst Potential is considered. The coupling between the non-local curvature content of the spacetime as encoded in the Weyl tensor, and the existence of a Killing tensor is explored and a constructive, algebraic test for a fourth order Killing tensor suggested. The approach used exploits the variables defined for the Bäckland transformations to clarify the relationship between Weyl curvature, con…
I visually explore the features of geodesic orbits in arbitrary stationary axisymmetric vacuum (SAV) spacetimes that are constructed from a complex Ernst potential. Some of the geometric features of integrable and chaotic orbits are highlighted. The geodesic problem for these SAV spacetimes is rewritten as a two degree of freedom problem and the connection between current ideas in dynamical systems and the study of two manifolds sought. The relationship between the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, canonical transformations, constants of motion and Killing tensors are commented on. Wherever possible …
We prove that conformal curved spacetime can be encoded into the initial wave function and that curved propagation can be simulated on a two-dimensional regular lattice with a finite set of homogeneous unitary operators. We generalize recent results shown in [1], where the author transforms flat-spacetime in curved static spacetime via non-unitary rotations. In particular, encoding the metric in the initial quantum state via unitary local rotations, can naturally be useful for quantum simulators due to the efficiency and simplicity of the implementation scheme. We validate our model proving th…
This paper explores the Petrov type D, stationary axisymmetric vacuum (SAV) spacetimes that were found by Carter to have separable Hamilton-Jacobi equations, and thus admit a second-order Killing tensor. The derivation of the spacetimes presented in this paper borrows from ideas about dynamical systems, and illustrates concepts that can be generalized to higher- order Killing tensors. The relationship between the components of the Killing equations and metric functions are given explicitly. The origin of the four separable coordinate systems found by Carter is explained and classified in terms…
We present the reconstruction method of $f(R)$ gravity for the homogeneous and anisotropic Bianchi-I spacetime, which was previously formulated only for homogeneous and isotropic FLRW spacetime. We argue in this paper that for anisotropic spacetimes, the total anisotropy behaves as an independent metric degree of freedom on top of the average scale factor in $f(R)$ gravity. This is not like $GR$, where specifying the form of the average scale factor as a function of time also specify the total anisotropy as a function of time uniqely. We link this peculiar fact to an interesting intertwining b…
We develop a complete Hamiltonian approach to the theory of perturbations around any spatially homogeneous spacetime. We employ the Dirac method for constrained systems which is well-suited to cosmological perturbations. We refine the method via the so-called Kucha\vr parametrization of the kinematical phase space. We separate the gauge-invariant dynamics of the three-surfaces from the three-surface deformations induced by linear coordinate transformations. The canonical group of the three-surface deformations and the complete space of gauge-fixing conditions are explicit in our approach. We i…
Following from a question of Wheeler, why does the Hamiltonian constraint ${\cal H}$ of GR have the particular form it does? A first answer, by Hojman, Kuchař and Teitelboim, is that using embeddability into spacetime as a principle gives the form of ${\cal H}$. The present paper culminates a second Machian answer - initially by Barbour, Foster and ó Murchadha - in which space but not spacetime are assumed. Thus this answer is additionally a classical-level resolution of the spacetime reconstruction problem. In this approach, mere consistency imposed by the Dirac procedure whittles down a gene…
We present a procedure that allows the construction of the metric perturbations and electromagnetic four-potential, for gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations produced by sources in Kerr spacetime. This may include, for example, the perturbations produced by a point particle or an extended object moving in orbit around a Kerr black hole. The construction is carried out in the frequency domain. Previously, Chrzanowski derived the vacuum metric perturbations and electromagnetic four-potential by applying a differential operator to a certain potential $Ψ$. Here we construct $Ψ$ for inhom…

In this work we present a "modest" holographic reconstruction of the bulk geometry in asymptotically flat spacetime using the two-point correlators of boundary quantum field theory (QFT) in asymptotically flat spacetime. The boundary QFT lives on the null boundary of the spacetime, namely null infinity and/or the Killing horizons. The bulk reconstruction relies on two unrelated results: (i) there is a bulk-to-boundary type correspondence between free quantum fields living in the bulk manifold and free quantum fields living on its null boundary, and (ii) one can construct the metric by making u…
Using the asymptotic form of the bulk Weyl tensor, we present an explicit approach that allows us to reconstruct exact four-dimensional Einstein spacetimes which are algebraically special with respect to Petrov's classification. If the boundary metric supports a traceless, symmetric and conserved complex rank-two tensor, which is related to the boundary Cotton and energy-momentum tensors, and if the hydrodynamic congruence is shearless, then the bulk metric is exactly resummed and captures modes that stand beyond the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. We illustrate the method when the congruen…
We present a "holographic" reconstruction of bulk spacetime geometry using correlation functions of a massless field living at the "future boundary" of the spacetime, namely future null infinity $\mathscr{I}^+$. It is holographic in the sense that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between correlation functions of a massless field in four-dimensional spacetime $\mathcal{M}$ and those of another massless field living in three-dimensional null boundary $\mathscr{I}^+$. The idea is to first reconstruct the bulk metric $g_{μν}$ by "inverting" the bulk correlation functions and re-express the…
In this work we elaborate on an extension of the AdS/CFT framework to a subclass of gravitational theories with vanishing cosmological constant. By building on earlier ideas, we construct a correspondence between Ricci-flat spacetimes admitting asymptotically hyperbolic hypersurfaces and a family of conformal field theories on a codimension two manifold at null infinity. By truncating the gravity theory to the pure gravitational sector, we find the most general spacetime asymptotics, renormalize the gravitational action, reproduce the holographic stress tensors and Ward identities of the famil…
We present a general formalism for the Hamiltonian description of perturbation theory around any spatially homogeneous spacetime. We employ and refine the Dirac method for constrained systems, which is very well-suited to cosmological perturbations. This approach includes a discussion of the gauge-invariant dynamics of perturbations as well as an analysis of gauge transformations, gauge-fixing, partial gauge-fixing and spacetime reconstruction. We will introduce the Kuchař parametrization of the kinematical phase space as a convenient tool for studying the gauge transformations. The key elemen…
In the previous article Eur. Phys. J. Plus 136, 590 (2021) (arXiv: 2110.15396) we have proposed a reconstruction method for the kinetic gravity braiding theory in the framework of the flat Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime. Here we develop this method in the Bianchi I spacetime model for a subclass of the Horndeski theory: $G_5 \sim ϕ$, $G_2(X)\neq0$, $G_3(X)\neq0$. The Hubble parameter $H(t)$ and the canonical kinetic term $X(t)$ are set a priori. The choice of the function $X(t)$ determines the anisotropic properties of the Universe. This makes it possible to provide believable anisotropy.…
Light-cone cuts have recently been proposed as a method to reconstruct the conformal metric of a holographic spacetime. We explore how additional information about the bulk geometry gets encoded in the structure of these light-cone cuts. In particular, we study how the hyperbolic angle related to a cusp in the light-cone cut encodes information about the matter content of the spacetime. We provide an explicit numerical example reconstructing the metric for a 4- dimensional spacetime composed by the superposition of a boson star and a gas of radiation in AdS.
The radiation gauges used by Chrzanowski (his IRG/ORG) for metric reconstruction in the Kerr spacetime seem to be over-specified. Their specification consists of five conditions: four, which we treat here as valid gauge conditions, plus an additional condition on the trace of the metric perturbation. In this work, we utilize a newly developed form of the perturbed Einstein equations to establish a condition -- on a particular tetrad component of the stress-energy tensor -- under which the full IRG/ORG can be imposed. Using gauge freedom, we are able to impose the full IRG for Petrov type II an…
We develop a systematic method for renormalizing the AdS/CFT prescription for computing correlation functions. This involves regularizing the bulk on-shell supergravity action in a covariant way, computing all divergences, adding counterterms to cancel them and then removing the regulator. We explicitly work out the case of pure gravity up to six dimensions and of gravity coupled to scalars. The method can also be viewed as providing a holographic reconstruction of the bulk spacetime metric and of bulk fields on this spacetime, out of conformal field theory data. Knowing which sources are turn…
We provide a formula to reconstruct bulk spacetime metrics inside black holes by the time dependence of complexity in the dual quantum field theory, based on the complexity=volume (CV) conjecture in the holographic duality.
Preserving information stored in a physical system subjected to noise can be modeled in a communication-theoretic paradigm, in which storage and retrieval correspond to an input encoding and output decoding, respectively. The encoding and decoding are then constructed in such a way as to protect against the action of a given noisy quantum channel. This paper considers the situation in which the noise is not due to technological imperfections, but rather to the physical laws governing the evolution of the universe. In particular, we consider the dynamics of quantum systems under a 1+1 Robertson…
This article reviews the progress in our understanding of the reconstruction of the bulk spacetime in the holographic correspondence from the dual field theory including an account of how these developments have led to the reproduction of the Page curve of the Hawking radiation from black holes. We review quantum error correction and relevant recovery maps with toy examples based on tensor networks, and discuss how it provides the desired framework for bulk reconstruction in which apparent inconsistencies with properties of the operator algebra in the dual field theory are naturally resolved. …
As a starting point, we state some relevant geometrical properties enjoyed by the cosmological horizon of a certain class of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker backgrounds. Those properties are generalised to a larger class of expanding spacetimes $M$ admitting a geodesically complete cosmological horizon $\scrim$ common to all co-moving observers. This structure is later exploited in order to recast, in a cosmological background, some recent results for a linear scalar quantum field theory in spacetimes asymptotically flat at null infinity. Under suitable hypotheses on $M$, encompassing both the cosm…
We present a generalization of Minkowski's classic theorem on the reconstruction of tetrahedra from algebraic data to homogeneously curved spaces. Euclidean notions such as the normal vector to a face are replaced by Levi-Civita holonomies around each of the tetrahedron's faces. This allows the reconstruction of both spherical and hyperbolic tetrahedra within a unified framework. A new type of hyperbolic simplex is introduced in order for all the sectors encoded in the algebraic data to be covered. Generalizing the phase space of shapes associated to flat tetrahedra leads to group valued momen…
