We propose a non-Gaussianity test for gravitational wave backgrounds by combining data streams of multiple detectors. This simple method allows us to check whether a detected background is "smooth" enough to be consistent with an inflation-type background, or is contaminated by individually undetectable weak burst signals. The proposed test would be quite useful for the Big Bang Observer or DECIGO whose primary target is a background from inflation at 0.1-1Hz where gravitational wave bursts from supernovae of population III stars might become a troublesome foreground.
We investigate the power of wavelet techniques in detecting non-Gaussianity in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We use the method to discriminate between an inflationary and a cosmic strings model using small simulated patches of the sky. We show the importance of the choice of a good test statistic in order to optimise the discriminating power of the wavelet technique. In particular, we construct the Fisher discriminant function, which combines all the information available in the different wavelet scales. We also compare the performance of different decomposition schemes and wavelet ba…
We investigate the performance of spherical wavelets in discriminating between standard inflationary models (Gaussian) and non-Gaussian models. For the later we consider small perturbations of the Gaussian model in which an artificially specified skewness or kurtosis is introduced through the Edgeworth expansion. By combining all the information present in all the wavelet scales with the Fisher discriminant, we find that the spherical Mexican Hat wavelets are clearly superior to the spherical Haar wavelets. The former can detect levels of the skewness and kurtosis of ~1% for 33' resolution, an…
We investigate the isocurvaton model, in which the isocurvature perturbation plays a role in suppressing the curvature perturbation, and large non-Gaussianity and gravitational waves can be produced with no isocurvature perturbation for dark matter. We show that in the slow roll non-interacting multi-field theory, the isocurvaton mechanism can not be realized. This result can also be generalized to most of the studied models with generalized kinetic terms. We also study the implications for the curvaton model. We show that there is a combined constraint for curvaton on non-Gaussianity, gravita…
Since cosmic-microwave-background (CMB) and large-scale-structure (LSS) data will shortly improve dramatically with the Microwave Anisotropy Probe (MAP) and Planck Surveyor, and the Anglo-Australian 2-Degree Field (2dF) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), respectively, it is timely to ask which of the CMB or LSS will provide a better probe of primordial non-gaussianity. In this paper we consider this question, using the bispectrum as a discriminating statistic. We consider several non-gaussian models and find that in each case the CMB will provide a better probe of primordial non-gaussianity.…
We study brane inflation scenarios in a warped throat geometry and show that there exists a consistency condition between the non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation and the amplitude and scale-dependence of the primordial gravitational waves. This condition is independent of the warping of the throat and the form of the inflaton potential. We find that such a relation could be tested by a future CMB polarization experiment if the Planck satellite is able to detect both a gravitational wave background and a non-Gaussian statistic. In models where the observable stage of inflation occurs …
We adapt the smooth tests of goodness of fit developed by Rayner and Best to the study of the non-Gaussianity of interferometric observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The interferometric measurements (visibilities) are transformed into signal-to-noise eigenmodes, and then the method is applied directly in Fourier space. This transformation allows us to perform the analysis in different subsets of eigenmodes according to their signal-to-noise level. The method can also deal with non-uniform or incomplete coverage of the UV plane. We explore here two possibilities: we analyse ei…
Employing the perturbative treatment of gravitational clustering, we discuss possible effects of primordial non-Gaussianity on the matter power spectrum. As gravitational clustering develops, the coupling between different Fourier modes of density perturbations becomes important and the primordial non-Gaussianity which intrinsically possesses a non-trivial mode-correlation can affect the late-time evolution of the power spectrum. We quantitatively estimate the non-Gaussian effect on power spectrum from the perturbation theory. The potential impact on the cosmological parameter estimation using…
We use the Hamilton-Jacobi theory to study the nonlinear evolutions of inhomogeneous spacetimes during inflation in generalized gravity. We find the exact solutions to the lowest order Hamilton-Jacobi equation for special scalar potentials and introduce an approximation method for general potentials. The conserved quantity invariant under a change of timelike hypersurfaces proves useful in dealing with gravitational perturbations. In the long-wavelength approximation, we find a conserved quantity related to the new canonical variable that makes the Hamiltonian density vanish, and calculate the…
We study the evolution of cosmological perturbations on large scales, up to second order, for a perfect fluid with generic equation of state. Taking advantage of super-horizon conservation laws, it is possible to follow the evolution of the non-Gaussianity of perturbations through the different stages after inflation. We find that a large non-linearity is generated by the gravitational dynamics from the original inflationary quantum fluctuations. This leads to a significant enhancement of the tiny intrinsic non-Gaussianity produced during inflation in single-field slow-roll models.
We investigate the relative sensitivities of several tests for deviations from Gaussianity in the primordial distribution of density perturbations. We consider models for non-Gaussianity that mimic that which comes from inflation as well as that which comes from topological defects. The tests we consider involve the cosmic microwave background (CMB), large-scale structure (LSS), high-redshift galaxies, and the abundances and properties of clusters. We find that the CMB is superior at finding non-Gaussianity in the primordial gravitational potential (as inflation would produce), while observati…
A class of non-canonical inflationary models is identified, where the leading-order contribution to the non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation is determined by the sound speed of the fluctuations in the inflaton field. Included in this class of models is the effective action for multiple coincident branes in the finite n limit. The action for this configuration is determined using a powerful iterative technique, based upon the fundamental representation of SU(2). In principle the upper bounds on the tensor-scalar ratio that arise in the standard, single-brane DBI inflationary scenario c…
An overview of the searches for gravitational waves from radio pulsars with LIGO and GEO is given. We give a brief description of the algorithm used in these targeted searches and provide end-to-end validation of the technique through hardware injections. We report on some aspects of the recent S3/S4 LIGO and GEO search for signals from several pulsars. The gaussianity of narrow frequency bands of S3/S4 LIGO data, where pulsar signals are expected, is assessed with Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. Preliminary results from the S3 run with a network of four detectors are given for pulsar J1939+2134.
We present a second-order gauge-invariant formalism to study the evolution of curvature perturbations in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled by multiple interacting fluids. We apply such a general formalism to describe the evolution of the second-order curvature perturbations in the standard one-single field inflation, in the curvaton and in the inhomogeneous reheating scenarios for the generation of the cosmological perturbations. Moreover, we provide the exact expression for the second-order temperature anisotropies on large scales, including second-order gravitational effects and e…
The generic prediction for the perturbations generated during slow--roll, single--field inflation, as they appear in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), is a flat, close--to--Gaussian spectrum. We calculate the general solution for a warm inflationary scenario with weak dissipation, reviewing the dissipative dynamics of the two--fluid system, and calculate the bispectrum of the gravitational field fluctuations generated in the case where dissipation of the vacuum potential during inflation is the mechanism for structure formation, but is the sub--dominant effect in the dynamics of the scala…
We calculate the general solutions for a warm inflationary scenario with weak dissipation, reviewing the dissipative dynamics of the two-fluid system, and calculate the bispectrum of the gravitational field fluctuations generated in the case where dissipation of the vacuum potential during inflation is the mechanism for structure formation, but is the sub-dominant effect in the dynamics of the scalar field during slow-roll. The bispectrum is non-zero because of the self-interaction of the scalar field. We compare the predictions with both those of standard, or `supercooled', inflationary model…
I compute the 3-D non-linear evolution of gas and dark matter fluids in the neighbourhood of cosmic string wakes which are formed at high redshift ($z\simeq 2240$) for a ``realistic'' scenario of wake formation. These wakes are the ones which stand out most prominently as cosmological sheets and are expected to play a dominant rôle in the cosmic string model of structure formation. Employing a high-resolution 3-D hydrodynamics code to evolve these wakes until the present day yields results for the baryon bias generated in the inner wake region. I find that today, wakes would be $1.5 h^{-1}$ Mp…
The contribution of gravitational wave (tensor metric) and energy density (scalar metric) fluctuations to the cosmic microwave background polarization is computed by numerically solving the relativistic radiation transfer equations. We find that the tensor contribution is significant only at large angular scales (multipoles $\ell \lta 40$). For standard recombination, the tensor contribution can dominate at $\ell \lta 40$; however, the effect would be difficult to detect since the total (scalar plus tensor) polarization is $< 1$\%. For models with late reionization, the total large angular sca…
In the standard picture of structure formation, initially random-phase fluctuations are amplified by non-linear gravitational instability to produce a final distribution of mass which is highly non-Gaussian and has highly coupled Fourier phases. Second-order statistics, such as the power spectrum, are blind to this kind of phase association. We discuss the information contained in the phases of cosmological density fluctuations and their possible use in statistical analysis tools. In particular, we show how the bispectrum measures a particular form of phase association called quadratic phase c…
We consider primordial non-Gaussianity due to quadratic corrections in the gravitational potential parametrized by a non-linear coupling parameter fnl. We study constraints on fnl from measurements of the galaxy bispectrum in redshift surveys. Using estimates for idealized survey geometries of the 2dF and SDSS surveys and realistic ones from SDSS mock catalogs, we show that it is possible to probe |fnl|~100, after marginalization over bias parameters. We apply our methods to the galaxy bispectrum measured from the PSCz survey, and obtain a 2sigma-constraint |fnl|< 1800. We estimate that an all…
In this paper we present a complete computation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies up to third order from gravitational perturbations accounting for scalar, vector and tensor perturbations. We then specify our results to the large scale limit, providing the evolution of the gravitational potentials in a flat universe filled with matter and cosmological constant which characterizes the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. As a byproduct in the large scale approximation we are able to give non-perturbative solutions for the photon geodesic equations. Our results are the first step t…
The 21-cm anisotropies from the neutral hydrogen distribution prior to the era of reionization is a sensitive probe of primordial non-Gaussianity. Unlike the case with cosmic microwave background, 21-cm anisotropies provide multi-redshift information with frequency selection and is not damped at arcminute angular scales. We discuss the angular trispectrum of the 21-cm background anisotropies and discuss how the trispectrum signal generated by the primordial non-Gaussianity can be measured with the three-to-one correlator and the corresponding angular power spectrum. We also discuss the separat…
Following the discovery of the CMB, the hot big-bang model has become the standard cosmological model. In this theory, small primordial fluctuations are subsequently amplified by gravity to form the large-scale structure seen today. Different theories for unified models of particle physics, lead to different predictions for the statistical properties of the primordial fluctuations, that can be divided in two classes: gaussian and non-gaussian. Convincing evidence against or for gaussian initial conditions would rule out many scenarios and point us towards a physical theory for the origin of st…
After the precise observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy power spectrum, attention is now being focused on the higher order statistics of the CMB anisotropies. Since linear evolution preserves the statistical properties of the initial conditions, observed non-Gaussianity of the CMB will mirror primordial non-Gaussianity. Single field slow-roll inflation robustly predicts negligible non-Gaussianity so an indication of non-Gaussianity will suggest alternative scenarios need to be considered. In this paper we calculate the information on primordial non-Gaussianity encode…
We derive analytical formulae for the Minkowski Functions of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and large-scale structure (LSS) from primordial non-Gaussianity. These formulae enable us to estimate a non-linear coupling parameter, f_NL, directly from the CMB and LSS data without relying on numerical simulations of non-Gaussian primordial fluctuations. One can use these formulae to estimate statistical errors on f_NL from Gaussian realizations, which are much faster to generate than non-Gaussian ones, fully taking into account the cosmic/sampling variance, beam smearing, survey mask, etc. We…
We have implemented likelihood testing of the performance of an optimal filter within the online analysis of AURIGA, a sub-Kelvin resonant-bar gravitational wave detector. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique in discriminating between impulsive mechanical excitations of the resonant-bar and other spurious excitations. This technique also ensures the accuracy of the estimated parameters such as the signal-to-noise ratio. The efficiency of the technique to deal with non-stationary noise and its application to data from a network of detectors are also discussed.
Using a non-perturbative method developed in a previous work (paper II), we derive the probability distribution $P(δ_R)$ of the density contrast within spherical cells in the quasi-linear regime for some non-Gaussian initial conditions. We describe three such models. The first one is a straightforward generalization of the Gaussian scenario. It can be seen as a phenomenological description of a density field where the tails of the linear density contrast distribution would be of the form $P_L(δ_L) \sim e^{-|δ_L|^{-α}}$, where $α$ is no longer restricted to 2 (as in the Gaussian case). We deriv…
Recent second-order perturbation computations have provided an accurate prediction for the primordial gravitational potential $Φ(x)$ in scenarios in which cosmological perturbations are generated either during or after inflation. This enables us to make realistic predictions for a non-Gaussian part of $Φ(x)$, which is generically written in momentum space as a double convolution of its Gaussian part with a suitable kernel, f_NL(k1,k2). This kernel defines the amplitude and angular structure of the non-Gaussian signals and originates from the evolution of second-order perturbations after the ge…
Particle collisions with center-of-mass energy larger than the fundamental gravitational scale can generate non perturbative gravitational objects such as black holes and branes. In models with large extra dimensions, the fundamental gravitational scale may be around a TeV, making it possible for next generation particle colliders and ultra-high energy cosmic rays to produce such non perturbative gravitational objects. The decay of TeV gravitational objects is significantly different from standard model processes such that probes of these new ideas are within reach. We study the differences be…
