In this paper, we use the 'Quasi Normal Modes' (QNM) approach for discussing the transmission properties of double-side opened optical cavities: in particular, this approach is specified for one dimensional (1D) 'Photonic Band Gap' (PBG) structures. Moreover, we conjecture that the density of the modes (DOM) is a dynamical variable which has the flexibility of varying with respect to the boundary conditions as well as the initial conditions; in fact, the e.m. field generated by two monochromatic counter-propagating pump waves leads to interference effects inside a quarter-wave (QW) symmetric 1D-PBG structure. Finally, here, for the first time, a large number of theoretical assumptions on QNM metrics for an open cavity, never discussed in literature, are proved, and a simple and direct method to calculate the QNM norm for a 1D-PBG structure is reported.
While the light transmission of photonic crystals is characterized by the photonic band gap, the one of disordered photonic structures is typified by a multiplicity of transmission depths. The total transmission over a range of wavelengths is related to the width of such range, but also to the type of disorder. Less homogeneous disordered structures transmit more light than the ordered counterpart regardless of the wavelengths range width. More homogeneous disordered structures transmit more light than the ordered counterpart only above a certain value of the width. We studied this behaviour w…
The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model is the simplest example of a lattice with non-trivial topology. It supports mid-gap topologically protected states, whose energies are unaffected by disorder. We show that photonic multilayer structures provide an exact implementation of an SSH lattice, provided each layer has the same propagation thickness. From this, it follows that the cavity mode in a conventional semiconductor microcavity is a protected SSH mid-gap state. We demonstrate this experimentally using controlled disorder in a mathematically equivalent system, a radio frequency transmission l…
Isotropic photonic band gap and anisotropic structures in transmission spectra of two-dimensional 5-fold and 8-fold symmetric quasiperiodic photonic crystals
Tunability of the reflection and the transmission spectra of two periodically corrugated metallic plates, obtained by control of the interactions between plasmonic and photonic modes
Topological photonic insulators pave the way toward efficient integrated photonic devices with minimized scattering losses. Optical properties of the majority of topological structures proposed to date are fixed by design such that no changes to their performance can be made once the device has been fabricated. However, tunability is important for many applications, including modulators, switches, or optical buffers. Therefore, we propose a straightforward way for the dynamic control of transmission in a silicon-based topological photonic crystal enabled by all-optical free-carrier excitation …
We investigate numerically the effect of Kerr nonlinearity on the transmission spectrum of a one dimensional $δ$-function photonic crystal. It is found that the photonic band gap (PBG) width either increases or decreases depending on both sign and strength of Kerr nonlinearity. We found that any amount of self-focusing nonlinearity $(α>0)$ leads to an increase of the PBG width leading to light localization. However, for defocusing nonlinearity, we found a range of non-linearity strengths for which the photonic band gap width decreases when the nonlinearity strength increases and a critical non…
Exceptional points as branch singularities describe peculiar degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems that do not obey energy conservation. This work shows that exceptional points can emerge in a topological photonic system, for example, the topological photonic waveguide coupled with two degenerate counter-propagation topological whispering gallery modes. Such a photonic architecture is designed by crystal-symmetry-protected topological photonic insulators based on air rods in conventional dielectric materials. The relevant exceptional point reveals the breaking of the parity-time symmetry, refl…
Microwave transmission measurements were performed for a three-dimensional (3D) layer-by-layer chiral photonic crystal (PhC), whose photonic band structure contains 3D singular points, Weyl points. For the frequency and wavevector in the vicinity of a Weyl point, the transmitted intensity was found to be inversely proportional to the square of the propagation length. In addition, the transmitted wave was well-collimated in the plane parallel to the PhC layers, even for point-source incidence. When a plane wave was incident on the PhC containing metal scatters, the planar wavefront was reconstr…

Effect of 1-D photonic crystals on optical transmission of VO2 is studied by depositing thin films of VO2 nanoparticles on SiO2/TiO2 distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) in the near infrared (IR) spectrum as per earlier theoretical predictions of J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 51 375102 (2018). Monoclinic VO2 nanoparticles with tuned crystallinity were synthesized by a facile solution processing method. Moderately crystalline (MC) and highly crystalline (HC) VO2 nanostructures were obtained by varying its synthesis temperature and post growth annealing conditions. Both MC VO2 and HC VO2 films exhibit e…
In this paper, the photonic quantum spin Hall effect (PQSHE) is realized in dielectric two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice photonic crystal (PC) by stretching and shrinking the honeycomb unit cell. Combining two honeycomb lattice PCs with a common photonic band gap (PBG) but different band topologies can generate a topologically protected edge state at the combined junction. The topological edge states and their unidirectional transmission as the scatterers with triangular, pentagonal, and heptagonal shapes are researched. Meanwhile, the unidirectional transmission in an inverted Ω-shaped w…
We present a photonics integrated circuit on silicon substrate withreconfigurable nonreciprocal transmission that exhibits a large isolationratio and low insertion loss. It also offers ability for all-optical function-alities, like optical computing gates, or a flip-flop. The circuit is a mixedcavity system of which the linear transmission can be tuned as a Fanoresonance or electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) using twointegrated heaters. With high optical intensity inside the cavity, the Fanoresonance and EIT peak induce a strong distortion due to thermal non-linearities in the cavi…
Microwave photonics (MWP) studies the interaction between microwave and optical waves for the generation, transmission and processing of microwave signals (i.e., three key domains), taking advantages of broad bandwidth and low loss offered by modern photonics. Integrated MWP using photonic integrated circuits (PICs) can reach a compact, reliable and green implementation. Most PICs, however, are recently developed to perform one or more functions restricted inside a single domain. In this paper, as highly desired, a multifunctional PIC is proposed to cover the three key domains. The PIC is fabr…
Photonic resonators allowing to confine the electromagnetic field in ultra-small volumes and with long decay times are crucial to a number of applications requiring enhanced nonlinear effects. For applications to integrated photonic devices on chip, compactness and optimized in-plane transmission become relevant figures of merit as well. Here we optimize an encapsulated Si/SiO$_2$ photonic crystal nanobeam cavity at telecom wavelengths by means of a global optimization procedure, where only the first few holes surrounding the cavity are varied to decrease its radiative losses. This strategy al…

We report optical transmission measurements on suspended silicon photonic-crystal waveguides, where one side of the photonic lattice is shifted by half a period along the waveguide axis. The combination of this glide symmetry and slow light leads to a strongly enhanced chiral light-matter interaction but the interplay between slow light and backscattering has not been investigated experimentally in such waveguides. We build photonic-crystal resonators consisting of glide-symmetric waveguides terminated by reflectors and use transmission measurements as well as evanescent coupling to map out th…
