In supersymmetric extensions of the standard model there is no basic difference between Higgs and matter fields, which leads to the well known problem of potentially large baryon and lepton number violating interactions. Although these unwanted couplings can be forbidden by continuous or discrete global symmetries, a theoretical guiding principle for their choice is missing. We examine this problem for a class of vacua of the heterotic string compactified on an orbifold. As expected, in general there is no difference between Higgs and matter. However, certain vacua happen to possess unbroken matter parity and discrete $R$-symmetries which single out Higgs fields in the low energy effective field theory. We present a method how to identify maximal vacua in which the perturbative contribution to the $μ$-term and the expectation value of the superpotential vanish. Two vacua are studied in detail, one with two pairs of Higgs doublets and one with partial gauge-Higgs unification.
We use deep autoencoder neural networks to draw a chart of the heterotic $\mathbb{Z}_6$-II orbifold landscape. Even though the autoencoder is trained without knowing the phenomenological properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_6$-II orbifold models, we are able to identify fertile islands in this chart where phenomenologically promising models cluster. Then, we apply a decision tree to our chart in order to extract the defining properties of the fertile islands. Based on this information we propose a new search strategy for phenomenologically promising string models.
We describe a new type of discrete symmetry that relates heterotic-string models. It is based on the spectral flow operator which normally acts within a general N=(2,2) model and we use this operator to construct a map between N=(2,0) models. The landscape of N=(2,0) models is of particular interest among all heterotic-string models for two important reasons: Firstly, N=1 spacetime SUSY requires (2,0) superconformal invariance and secondly, models with the well motivated by the Standard Model SO(10) unification structure are of this type. This idea was inspired by a new discrete symmetry in th…
We study possible correlations between properties of the observable and hidden sectors in heterotic string theory. Specifically, we analyze the case of the Z6-II orbifold compactification which produces a significant number of models with the spectrum of the supersymmetric standard model. We find that requiring realistic features does affect the hidden sector such that hidden sector gauge group factors SU(4) and SO(8) are favoured. In the context of gaugino condensation, this implies low energy supersymmetry breaking.
Discovering a selection principle and the origin of flavor symmetries from an ultraviolet completion of particle physics is an interesting open task. As a step in this direction, we classify all possible flavor symmetries of 4D massless spectra emerging from supersymmetric Abelian orbifold compactifications, including roto-translations and non-factorizable compact spaces, for generic moduli values. Although these symmetries are valid in all string theories, we focus on the E8 x E8 heterotic string. We perform the widest known search of E8 x E8 Abelian orbifold compactifications, yielding over …
Following the recent exploration of smooth heterotic compactifications with unitary bundles, orbifold compactifications in six dimensions can be shown to correspond in the blow-up to compactifications with U(1) gauge backgrounds. A powerful tool is the comparison of anomaly polynomials. The presentation here focuses on heterotic SO(32) compactifications in six dimensions including five-branes. Four dimensional and E8 x E8 models are briefly commented on.
We explore a ``fertile patch'' of the heterotic landscape based on a Z_6-II orbifold with SO(10) and E_6 local GUT structures. We search for models allowing for the exact MSSM spectrum. Our result is that of order 100 out of a total 3\times 10^4 inequivalent models satisfy this requirement.
Recent developments in string theory have reinforced the notion that the space of stable supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric string vacua fills out a ``landscape'' whose features are largely unknown. It is then hoped that progress in extracting phenomenological predictions from string theory -- such as correlations between gauge groups, matter representations, potential values of the cosmological constant, and so forth -- can be achieved through statistical studies of these vacua. To date, most of the efforts in these directions have focused on Type I vacua. In this note, we present the firs…
The main aspects of a recently developed method for classification of heterotic superstring vacua in the Free Fermionic Formulation are presented. Using these techniques we classify a big number of approximately $10^{15}$ heterotic string vacua with Pati--Salam, SU(4)x{SU(2)}_Lx{SU(2)}_R gauge symmetry with respect to their main phenomenological features as the number of families, Pati--Salam breaking Higgs, Standard Model Higgs doublets, additional triplets and exotic charge states. We identify an interesting subclass of these vacua, approximately one to one million, whose massless spectrum i…
One of the goals of the landscape program in string theory is to extract information about the space of string vacua in the form of statistical correlations between phenomenological features that are otherwise uncorrelated in field theory. Such correlations would thus represent predictions of string theory that hold independently of a vacuum-selection principle. In this paper, we study statistical correlations between two features which are likely to be central to any potential description of nature at high energy scales: gauge symmetries and spacetime supersymmetry. We analyze correlations be…
We study the existence of realistic heterotic vacua on a new Abelian surface fibered Calabi-Yau threefold X with Z_8 x Z_8 fundamental group. Our main result is a no-go theorem, which says that (under mild assumptions) there is no stable holomorphic vector bundle on X satisfying the constraints required by global consistency of the heterotic vacuum and phenomenology. To prove the theorem we explore in some detail the Fourier-Mukai transform of vector bundles on Abelian surface fibrations.
In the framework of (0,2) gauged linear sigma models, we systematically generate sets of perturbatively dual heterotic string compactifications. This target space duality is first derived in non-geometric phases and then translated to the level of GLSMs and its geometric phases. In a landscape analysis, we compare the massless chiral spectra and the dimensions of the moduli spaces. Our study includes geometries given by complete intersections of hypersurfaces in toric varieties equipped with SU(n) vector bundles defined via the monad construction.
We complete our search for MSSM vacua in the Z_6-II heterotic orbifold by including models with 3 Wilson lines. We estimate the total number of inequivalent models in this orbifold to be 10^7. Out of these, we find almost 300 models with the exact MSSM spectrum, gauge coupling unification and a heavy top quark. Models with these features originate predominantly from local GUTs. The scale of gaugino condensation in the hidden sector is correlated with properties of the observable sector such that soft masses in the TeV range are preferred.
I compare the calculations of special $F^4$ and $R^4$ terms in the (toroidally-compactified) heterotic and type-I effective actions. Besides checking duality, this elucidates the quantitative rules of D-brane calculus. I explain in particular (a) why D-branes do not run in loops, and (b) how their instanton contributions arise from orbifold fixed points of their moduli space. The instanton sum has a simple representation as a sum of the elliptic genera of matrix models.
Localization properties of fields in compact extra dimensions are crucial ingredients for string model building, particularly in the framework of orbifold compactifications. Realistic models often require a slight deviation from the orbifold point, that can be analyzed using field theoretic methods considering (singlet) fields with nontrivial vacuum expectation values. Some of these fields correspond to blow-up modes that represent the resolution of orbifold singularities. Improving on previous analyses we give here an explicit example of the blow-up of a model from the heterotic Mini-landscap…
We employ powerful techniques based on Hilbert- and Groebner bases to analyze particle physics models derived from string theory. Individual models are shown to have a huge landscape of vacua that differ in their phenomenological properties. We explore the (discrete) symmetries of these vacua, the new R symmetry selection rules and their consequences for moduli stabilization.
The immensity of the string landscape and the difficulty of identifying solutions that match the observed features of particle physics have raised serious questions about the predictive power of string theory. Modern methods of optimisation and search can, however, significantly improve the prospects of constructing the standard model in string theory. In this paper we scrutinise a corner of the heterotic string landscape consisting of compactifications on Calabi-Yau three-folds with monad bundles and show that genetic algorithms can be successfully used to generate anomaly-free supersymmetric…
In a previous paper, referred to as a "Mini-Landscape" search, we explored a "fertile patch" of the heterotic landscape based on a Z6-II orbifold with SO(10) and E6 local GUT structures. In the present paper we extend this analysis. We find many models with the minimal supersymmetric standard model spectra and an exact R parity. In all of these models, the vector-like exotics decouple along D flat directions. We present two "benchmark" models which satisfy many of the constraints of a realistic supersymmetric model, including non-trivial Yukawa matrices for 3 families of quarks and leptons and…
We study a family of unstable heterotic string theories in more than ten dimensions which are connected via tachyon condensation to the ten-dimensional supersymmetric vacuum of heterotic string theory with gauge group SO(32). Calculating the spectrum of these theories, we find evidence for an S-duality which relates type I string theory in ten dimensions with n additional ninebrane-antininebrane pairs to heterotic string theory in 10+n dimensions with gauge group SO(32+n). The Kaluza-Klein modes of the supercritical dimensions are dual to non-singlet bound states of open strings.
If one begins with the assertion that the type IIA string compactified on a K3 surface is equivalent to the heterotic string on a four-torus one may try to find a statement about duality in ten dimensions by decompactifying the four-torus. Such a decompactification renders the K3 surface highly singular. The resultant K3 surface may be analyzed in two quite different ways - one of which is natural from the point of view of differential geometry and the other from the point of view of algebraic geometry. We see how the former leads to a "squashed K3 surface" and reproduces the Horava-Witten pic…
We consider the key ingredients which made the Z_6II Mini-Landscape a successful ground for model building. There one observes a preferred distribution for the fields of the standard model which has direct implications on the phenomenology, since it favors a heavy top quark and a plausible solution to the $μ$-problem. We extend the exploration to the Z_2xZ_4 orbifold, where a similar pattern is identified. To illustrate our findings we present an explicit Z_2xZ_4 model that exhibits the MSSM spectrum plus vector-like exotics at the orbifold point. We take this construction as an example of a l…
Compactifications of the heterotic string on T^d are the simplest, yet rich enough playgrounds to uncover swampland ideas: the U(1)^{d+16} left-moving gauge symmetry gets enhanced at special points in moduli space only to certain groups. We state criteria, based on lattice embedding techniques, to establish whether a gauge group is realized or not. For generic d, we further show how to obtain the moduli that lead to a given gauge group by modifying the method of deleting nodes in the extended Dynkin diagram of the Narain lattice II_{1,17}. More general algorithms to explore the moduli space ar…
We consider the possibility that the unification of the electroweak interactions and the strong force arises from string theory, at energies significantly lower than the string scale. As a tool, an effective grand unified field theory in six dimensions is derived from an anisotropic orbifold compactification of the heterotic string. It is explicitly shown that all anomalies cancel in the model, though anomalous Abelian gauge symmetries are present locally at the boundary singularities. In the supersymmetric vacuum additional interactions arise from higher-dimensional operators. We develop meth…
We study kinetic mixing between massless U(1) gauge symmetries in the bosonic formulation of heterotic orbifold compactifications. For non-prime Z_N factorisable orbifolds, we find a simple expression of the mixing in terms of the properties of the N=2 subsectors, which helps understand under what conditions mixing can occur. With this tool, we analyse Z_6-II heterotic orbifolds and find non-vanishing mixing even without including Wilson lines. We show that some semi-realistic models of the Mini-Landscape admit supersymmetric vacua with mixing between the hypercharge and an additional U(1), wh…
We apply deep-learning techniques to the string landscape, in particular, $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory on simply-connected Calabi-Yau threefolds with line bundles. It turns out that three-generation models cluster in particular islands specified by deep autoencoder networks and k-means++ clustering. Especially, we explore mutual relations between model parameters and the cluster with densest three-generation models (called "3-generation island"). We find that the 3-generation island has a strong correlation with the topological data of Calabi-Yau threefolds, in particular, second Chern cla…
We review our present understanding of heterotic compactifications on non-Kahler complex manifolds with torsion. Most of these manifolds can be obtained by duality chasing a consistent F-theory compactification in the presence of fluxes. We show that the duality map generically leads to non-Kahler spaces on the heterotic side, although under some special conditions we recover Kahler compactifications. The dynamics of the heterotic theory is governed by a new superpotential and minimizing this superpotential reproduces all the torsional constraints. This superpotential also fixes most of the mo…
We briefly review an algorithmic strategy to explore the landscape of heterotic E8 \times E8 vacua, in the context of compactifying smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds with vector bundles. The Calabi-Yau three-folds are algebraically realised as hypersurfaces in toric varieties and a large class of vector bundles are constructed thereon as monads. In the spirit of searching for Standard-like heterotic vacua, emphasis is placed on the integer combinatorics of the model-building programme.
Perturbative supersymmetry breaking on the landscape of string vacua is expected to favor large soft terms as a power-law or log distribution, but tempered by an anthropic veto of inappropriate vacua or vacua leading to too large a value for the derived weak scale -- a violation of the atomic principle. Indeed, scans of such vacua yield a statistical prediction for light Higgs boson mass m_h~ 125 GeV with sparticles (save possibly light higgsinos) typically beyond LHC reach. In contrast, models of dynamical SUSY breaking (DSB) -- with a hidden sector gauge coupling g^2 scanned uniformly -- lea…
We study moduli stabilization in combination with inflation in heterotic orbifold compactifications in the light of a large Hubble scale and the favored tensor-to-scalar ratio $r \approx 0.05$. To account for a trans-Planckian field range we implement aligned natural inflation. Although there is only one universal axion in heterotic constructions, further axions from the geometric moduli can be used for alignment and inflation. We argue that such an alignment is rather generic on orbifolds, since all non-perturbative terms are determined by modular weights of the involved fields and the Dedeki…
We survey recent studies of Gauss-Bonnet gravity and its dual conformal field theories, including their relation to the violation of the Kovtun-Starinets-Son viscosity bound. Via holography, we can also study properties such as microcausality and unitarity of boundary field theory duals. Such studies in turn supply constraints on bulk gravitational theories, consigning some of them to the swampland.
We discuss the use of gauge fields to stabilize complex structure moduli in Calabi-Yau three-fold compactifications of heterotic string and M-theory. The requirement that the gauge fields in such models preserve supersymmetry leads to a complicated landscape of vacua in complex structure moduli space. We develop methods to systematically map out this multi-branched vacuum space, in a computable and explicit manner. In analyzing the resulting vacua, it is found that the associated Calabi-Yau three-folds are sometimes stabilized at a value of complex structure resulting in a singular compactific…
It is well known that there are a great many apparently consistent vacua of string theory. We draw attention to the fact that there appear to be very few Calabi--Yau manifolds with the Hodge numbers h^{11} and h^{21} both small. Of these, the case (h^{11}, h^{21})=(3,3) corresponds to a manifold on which a three generation heterotic model has recently been constructed. We point out also that there is a very close relation between this manifold and several familiar manifolds including the `three-generation' manifolds with χ=-6 that were found by Tian and Yau, and by Schimmrigk, during early inv…
Generic solutions are studied in Einstein-scalar gravity in an ansatz that can interpolate between de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter regimes. The classification of regular solutions of \cite{exotic} is first extended to the dS regime. This implies, among others, the existence of cosmic clocks that reverse direction without passing through a curvature singularity. We then consider an ansatz for solutions that interpolate between the dS and AdS regimes. The structure of such more general solutions and their singularities are studied. It is shown that there are no regular solutions that interpolate be…
We argue that the heterotic string does not have classical vacua corresponding to de Sitter space-times of dimension four or higher. The same conclusion applies to type II vacua in the absence of RR fluxes. Our argument extends prior supergravity no-go results to regimes of high curvature. We discuss the interpretation of the heterotic result from the perspective of dual type II orientifold constructions. Our result suggests that the genericity arguments used in string landscape discussions should be viewed with caution.
We consider "magnetized brane" compactifications of the type I/heterotic string on K3 with U(1) background fluxes. The nonabelian gauge group and matter content of the resulting six-dimensional vacua are parameterized by a matrix encoding a lattice contained within the even, self-dual lattice Gamma^{3,19}. Mathematical results of Nikulin on lattice embeddings make possible a simple classification of such solutions. This approach makes it possible to explicitly and efficiently construct models in this class with a particular allowed gauge group and matter content, so that one can immediately "d…
To assist in the search for phenomenologically realistic models in the string landscape, we must develop tools for investigating all gauge charges, including U(1) charges, in string models. We introduce the process for constructing fermionic string models and present an algorithm for determining the U(1) gauge states and U(1) charges in weakly-coupled free fermionic heterotic string (WCFFHS) models given their matter and non-Abelian gauge content. We determine the computational complexity of this algorithm and discuss a particular implementation that can be used in conjunction with a framework…
The discovery that the number of physically consistent string vacua is on the order of 10^500 has prompted several statistical studies of string phenomenology. Contained here is one such study that focuses on the Weakly Coupled Free Fermionic Heterotic String (WCFFHS) formalism. Presented are systematic extensions of the well-known NAHE (Nanopoulos, Antoniadis, Hagelin, Ellis) set of basis vectors, which have been shown to produce phenomenologically realistic models. Statistics related to the number of U(1)'s, gauge group factors, non-Abelian singlets, ST SUSYs, as well as the gauge groups the…
We consider 5-dimensional supersymmetric field theories where supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism (or, equivalently, by the F-term VEV of the radion). In such models, the radion effective potential is calculable in terms of the 5d gauge coupling, the UV cutoff of the 5d field theory, and the field content. We provide simple, explicit formulae for the leading part of the two-loop effective potential. Our analysis applies in particular to 5d orbifold GUTs motivated by heterotic orbifold models. We focus on potentially realistic models of this type and make the additional assu…
Four-form flux in F-theory compactifications not only stabilizes moduli, but gives rise to ensembles of string vacua, providing a scientific basis for a stringy notion of naturalness. Of particular interest in this context is the ability to keep track of algebraic information (such as the gauge group) associated with individual vacua while dealing with statistics. In the present work, we aim to clarify conceptual issues and sharpen methods for this purpose, using compactification on ${\rm K3} \times {\rm K3}$ as a test case. Our first approach exploits the connection between the stabilization …
The space of $(2,0)$ models is of particular interest among all heterotic-string models because it includes the models with the minimal $SO(10)$ unification structure, which is well motivated by the Standard Model of particle physics data. The fermionic $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic-string models revealed the existence of a new symmetry in the space of string configurations under the exchange of spinors and vectors of the $SO(10)$ GUT group, dubbed spinor-vector duality. Such symmetries are important for the understanding of the landscape of string vacua and ultimately for the po…
Compactifications of the heterotic string on special T^d/Z_2 orbifolds realize a landscape of string models with 16 supercharges and a gauge group on the left-moving sector of reduced rank d+8. The momenta of untwisted and twisted states span a lattice known as the Mikhailov lattice II_{(d)}, which is not self-dual for d > 1. By using computer algorithms which exploit the properties of lattice embeddings, we perform a systematic exploration of the moduli space for d=1 and 2, and give a list of maximally enhanced points where the U(1)^{d+8} enhances to a rank d+8 non-Abelian gauge group. For d …
We propose an organizing principle for string theory moduli spaces in six dimensions with $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$, based on a rank reduction map, into which all known constructions fit. In the case of cyclic orbifolds, which are the main focus of the paper, we make an explicit connection with meromorphic 2D (s)CFTs with $c = 24$ ($c = 12$) and show how these encode every possible gauge symmetry enhancement in their associated 6D theories. These results generalize naturally to non-cyclic orbifolds, into which the only known string construction (to our awareness) also fits. This framework suggests…
Motivated by recent discussions of the string-theory landscape, we propose field-theoretic realizations of models with large numbers of vacua. These models contain multiple U(1) gauge groups, and can be interpreted as deconstructed versions of higher-dimensional gauge theory models with fluxes in the compact space. We find that the vacuum structure of these models is very rich, defined by parameter-space regions with different classes of stable vacua separated by boundaries. This allows us to explicitly calculate physical quantities such as the supersymmetry-breaking scale, the presence or abs…
We elaborate on the construction of de Sitter solutions from IIA orientifolds of SU(3)-structure manifolds that solve the 10-dimensional equations of motion at tree-level in the approximation of smeared sources. First we classify geometries that are orbifolds of a group manifold covering space which, upon the proper inclusion of O6 planes, can be described within the framework of N=1 supergravity in 4D. Then we scan systematically for de Sitter solutions, obtained as critical points of an effective 4D potential. Apart from finding many new solutions we emphasize the challenges in constructing …
