A line list of vibration-rotation transitions for 13C substituted HCN is presented. The line list is constructed using known experimental levels where available, calculated levels and ab initio line intensities originally calculated for the major isotopologue. Synthetic spectra are generated and compared with observations for cool carbon star WZ Cas. It is suggested that high resolution HCN spectra recorded near 14 micron should be particularly sensitive to the 13C to 12C ratio.
We build an accurate database of 5200 HCN and HNC rotation-vibration energy levels, determined from existing laboratory data. 20~000 energy levels in the Harris et al. (2002) linelist are assigned approximate quantum numbers. These assignments, lab determined energy levels and Harris et al (2002) energy levels are incorporated in to a new energy level list. A new linelist is presented, in which frequencies are computed using the lab determined energy levels where available, and the ab initio energy levels otherwise. The new linelist is then used to compute new model atmospheres and synthetic s…
In the light of the recent and unexpected discovery of a brand new type of white dwarfs, those with carbon-dominated atmospheres, we examine the asteroseismological potential of such stars. The motivation behind this is based on the observation that past models of carbon-atmosphere white dwarfs have partially ionized outer layers that bear strong resemblance with those responsible for mode excitation in models of pulsating DB (helium-atmosphere) and pulsating DA (hydrogen-atmosphere) white dwarfs. Our exciting main result is that, given the right location in parameter space, some carbon-atmosp…
Model carbon star atmospheres and synthetic spectra have been calculated using the recent HCN/HNC vibration rotation linelist of Harris et al. (2002) ApJ, 578, 657. The calculations are repeated using only HCN lines and show that HNC has a significant effect upon the temperature, density and optical depth of a stellar atmosphere. We fit synthetic spectra in the 2.7-4.0 micron region to observed ISO spectra of the carbon stars WZ Cas and TX Psc obtained by Aoki et al. (1998), A&A, 340, 222. These fits allow us to identify absorption by HNC in the spectrum of WZ Cas at 2.8-2.9 microns, and to de…
The role of carbon monoxide as a cooling agent for the thermal structure of the mid-photospheric to low-chromospheric layers of the solar atmosphere in internetwork regions is investigated. The treatment of radiative cooling via spectral lines of carbon monoxide (CO) has been added to the radiation chemo-hydrodynamics code CO5BOLD. [...] The CO opacity indeed causes additional cooling at the fronts of propagating shock waves in the chromosphere. There, the time-dependent approach results in a higher CO number density compared to the equilibrium case and hence in a larger net radiative cooling …
Absorption lines of the 12CO and 13CO molecular bands (Delta v = 2) at 2.29 -- 2.45 micron are modelled in spectrum of Arcturus (K2III). We compute a grid of model atmospheres and synthetic spectra for giant of Teff = 4300, log g = 1.5, and the elemental abundances of Peterson et al. (1993), but abundances of carbon, oxygen and the carbon isotopic ratio 12C/13C are varied in our computations. The computed spectra are fitted to the observed spectrum of Arcturus from the atlas of Hinkle et al. (1995). The best fit to observed spectrum is achieved for log N(C) = -3.78 +/- 0.1, 12C/13C = 8 +/- 1. …
We aim to test the power of theoretical calibrations based on a new generation of MARCS models by comparisons with observational photomteric data. We calculate synthetic uvby-Hbeta colour indices from synthetic spectra. A sample of 388 field stars as well as stars in globular clusters is used for a direct comparison of the synthetic indices versus empirical data and for scrutinizing the possibilities of theoretical calibrations for temperature, metallicity and gravity. We show that the temperature sensitivity of the synthetic (b-y) colour is very close to its empirical counterpart, whereas the…
White dwarfs represent the endpoint of stellar evolution for stars with initial masses between approximately 0.07 msun and 8-10 msun, where msun is the mass of the Sun (more massive stars end their life as either black holes or neutron stars). The theory of stellar evolution predicts that the majority of white dwarfs have a core made of carbon and oxygen, which itself is surrounded by a helium layer and, for ~80 per cent of known white dwarfs, by an additional hydrogen layer. All white dwarfs therefore have been traditionally found to belong to one of two categories: those with a hydrogen-rich…
Atmospheres of evolved AGB stars are heavily affected by pulsation, dust formation and mass loss, and they can become very extended. Time series of observed high-resolution spectra proved to be a useful tool to study atmospheric dynamics throughout the outer layers of these pulsating red giants. Originating at various depths, different molecular spectral lines observed in the near-infrared can be used to probe gas velocities there for different phases during the lightcycle. Dynamic model atmospheres are needed to represent the complicated structures of Mira variables properly. An important asp…
Four transits of the planet orbiting the star HD209458 were observed with the STIS spectrograph on board HST. The wavelength domain (1180-1710A) includes HI as well as CI, CII, CIV, NV, OI, SI, SiII, SiIII and SiIV lines. During the transits, absorptions are detected in HI, OI and CII (5+/-2%, 13+/-4.5% and 7.5+/-3.5%, respectively). No absorptions are detected for other lines. The 5% mean absorption over the whole HI Lyman alpha line is consistent with the previous detection at higher resolution (Vidal-Madjar et al. 2003). The absorption depths in OI and CII show that oxygen and carbon are pr…
The radiation hydrodynamic code CO5BOLD has been supplemented with the time-dependent treatment of chemical reaction networks. Advection of particle densities due to the hydrodynamic flow field is also included. The radiative transfer is treated frequency-independently, i.e. grey, so far. The upgraded code has been applied to two-dimensional simulations of carbon monoxide (CO) in the non-magnetic solar photosphere and low chromosphere. For this purpose a reaction network has been constructed, taking into account the reactions which are most important for the formation and dissociation of CO un…
Chemical equilibrium considerations suggest that, assuming solar elemental abundances, carbon on HD 209458b is sequestered primarily as carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4). The relative mole fractions of CO(g) and CH4(g) in chemical equilibrium are expected to vary greatly according to variations in local temperature and pressure. We show, however, that in the p = 1--1000 mbar range, chemical equilibrium does not hold. To explore disequilibrium effects, we couple the chemical kinetics of CO and CH4 to a three-dimensional numerical model of HD 209458b's atmospheric circulation. These simulat…
We explore different evolutionary scenarios to explain the helium deficiency observed in H1504+65, the most massive known PG1159 star. We concentrate mainly on the possibility that this star could be the result of mass loss shortly after the born-again and during the subsequent evolution through the [WCL] stage. This possibility is sustained by recent observational evidence of extensive mass-loss events in Sakurai's object and is in line with the recent finding that such mass losses give rise to PG1159 models with thin helium-rich envelopes and large rates of period change, as demanded by the …
Molecules present in exoplanetary atmospheres are expected to strongly influence the atmospheric radiation balance, trace dynamical and chemical processes, and indicate the presence of disequilibrium effects. Since molecules have the potential to reveal the exoplanet atmospheric conditions and chemistry, searching for them is a high priority. The rotational-vibrational transition bands of water, carbon monoxide, and methane are anticipated to be the primary sources of non-continuum opacity in hot-Jovian planets. Since these bands overlap in wavelength, and the corresponding signatures from the…
Originating in different depths of the very extended atmospheres of AGB stars, various molecular spectral lines observable in the near-infrared show diverse behaviours and can be used to probe atmospheric dynamics throughout the outer layers of these pulsating red giants. In Nowotny et al. (2005, Paper I) time series of synthetic high-resolution spectra were presented, computed from a dynamic model atmosphere for a typical carbon-rich Mira. In this work, line profile shapes, their variations during the lightcycle and radial velocities derived from wavelength shifts are analyzed and compared wi…
Laboratory analyses on fine-grained diamond residues from primitive meteorites have shown that nano-diamonds represent the most abundant form of presolar dust preserved in meteoritic samples. The presolar diamonds carry isotopic anomalies which indicate a very complex formation history. Several groups of diamonds may exist with origin in different types of stars. In order to identify the sites of formation observationally, we have extracted presolar diamonds from the Allende meteorite and measured the monochromatic absorption coefficient in a form which is useful for stellar atmosphere calcula…
A new model atmosphere analysis for the peculiar DQ white dwarf discovered by Carollo et al. (2002) is presented. The effective temperature and carbon abundance have been estimated by fitting both the photometric data (UBJ,VRF,IN,JHK) and a low resolution spectrum (3500<lambda<7500 A) with a new model grid for helium-rich white dwarfs with traces of carbon (DQ stars). We estimate Teff ~ 5120 +/- 200 K and log[C/He] ~ -5.8 +/- 0.5, which make GSC2U J131147.2+292348 the coolest DQ star ever observed. This result indicates that the hypothetical transition from C2 to C2H molecules around Teff = 60…
We present the first multi-epoch N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the carbon-rich Mira variable V Oph using MIDI at the ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Our MIDI observations were carried out at three different phases 0.18, 0.49, and 0.65, using three different baselines configurations (UT2-UT4, UT1-UT4, and UT2-UT3) with projected baseline lengths of 42-124 m. The wavelength dependence of the uniform-disk diameters obtained at all epochs is characterized by a roughly constant region between 8 and 10 micron with a slight dip centered at ~9.5 micron and a gradual increas…
We are conducting a high-resolution follow-up of candidate EMP stars extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; York et al. 2000) using UVES at the VLT. Three of the programme stars, SDSS J0912+0216, SDSS J1036+1212 and SDSS J1349-0229, where deliberately targetted as CEMP stars since a strong $G$ band was evident from the SDSS spectra and the weakness of the Ca {\sc ii} K line testified their very low metallicity. The UVES high resolution follow-up confirmed the original findings ([Fe/H] $<-2.50$) and allowed a more detailed investigation of their chemical composition. We determined t…
We have revisited the search for carbon monoxide absorption features in transmission during the transit of the extrasolar planet HD 209458b. We acquired 1077 high resolution spectra at 2 microns using NIRSPEC on Keck II during three transits. Our sensitivity is sufficient to test the degree of CO absorption in the first overtone bands during transit, based on plausible models of the planetary atmosphere. We compare to theoretical tangent geometry absorption spectra, computed by adding height-invariant ad hoc temperature pertubations to the model atmosphere of Sudarsky et al., and by treating c…
We investigate the evolution of cooling helium atmosphere white dwarfs using a full evolutionary code, specifically developed for following the effects of element diffusion and gravitational settling on white dwarf cooling. The major difference between this work and previous work is that we use more recent opacity data from the OPAL project. Since, in general, these opacities are higher than those available ten years ago, at a given effective temperature, convection zones go deeper than in models with older opacity data. Thus convective dredge-up of observationally detectable carbon in helium …
Existing determinations show that n(C)/n(Fe) is more than a factor of 10 below solar in the atmospheres of three white dwarfs that appear to be externally-polluted. These results are not easily explained if the stars have accreted interstellar matter, and we re-interpret these measurements as evidence that these stars have accreted asteroids of a chrondritic composition.
The transport of the nuclear cosmic ray flux in the atmosphere is studied and the atmospheric corrections to be applied to the measurements are calculated. The contribution of the calculated corrections to the accuracy of the experimental results are discussed and evaluated over the kinetic energy range 10-10$^{3}$ GeV/n. The Boron (B) and Carbon (C) elements system is used as a test case. It is shown that the required corrections become largely dominant at the highest energies investigated. The results are discussed.
Inside carbonaceous chondrite meteorites are tiny dust particles which, when heated, release noble gases with an isotopic composition different from what is found anywhere else in the solar system. For this reason it is believed that these grains are (inter)stellar dust which survived the collapse of the interstellar cloud that became the solar system. We will describe here why we believe that the most abundant of these grains, nano-diamonds, were formed in the atmospheres of carbon stars, and explain how this theory can be tested observationally.
A series of recent studies has placed the best estimates of the photospheric abundances of carbon and oxygen at log epsilon = 8.39 and 8.66, respectively. These values are ~ 40 % lower than earlier estimates. A coalition of corrections due to the adoption of an improved model atmosphere, updated atomic data and non-LTE corrections, and a reevaluation of the effect of blending features, is responsible for the change. The adopted hydrodynamical model of the solar surface is an important element to the update, but using a theoretical 1D model atmosphere leads to an average oxygen abundance modest…
Nineteen carbon stars that show lithium enrichment in their atmospheres have been discovered among a sample of 674 carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Six of the Li-rich carbon stars are of J-type, i.e. with strong 13C isotopic features. No super-Li-rich carbon stars were found. The incidence of lithium enrichment among carbon stars in the LMC is much rarer than in the Galaxy, and about five times more frequent among J-type than among N-type carbon stars. The bolometric magnitudes of the Li-rich carbon stars range between -3.3 and -5.7. Existing models of Li-enrichment via the hot bott…
