We use the Boer-Mulders functions parameterized from unpolarized $p+D$ Drell-Yan data by the FNAL E866/NuSea Collaboration combined with recently extracted Collins functions to calculate the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in unpolarized semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes both for ZEUS at Hadron Electron Ring Accelerator (HERA) and Jefferson Lab experiments (JLab), and to compare our results with their data. We also give predictions for the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries of SIDIS in the kinematical regime of HERMES Collaboration, and the forthcoming JLab experiments. We predict that the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries of semi-inclusive $π^-$ production are somewhat larger than that of $π^+$ production. We suggest to measure these two processes separately, which will provide more detail information on the Boer-Mulders functions as well as on the Collins functions.
We present a recent calculation of the transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions inside unpolarised protons and show how the ratio of the linearly polarized and the unpolarized gluon distribution in the proton can be probed by looking at $Cos(2ϕ_h)$ asymmetry in $J/ψ$ production in unpolarized $ep$ collision. We use NRQCD for estimating $J/ψ$ production and include contributions both from color singlet and color octet states.
We calculate the $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry of the unpolarized $p\bar{p}$ Drell-Yan dilepton production process in the $Z$-resonance region at the Tevatron kinematic domain. Such an azimuthal asymmetry can provide additional information about a spin-related new parton distribution function, i.e., the Boer-Mulders function of the proton, compared to the $pp$ process. Therefore the available data of unpolarized proton-antiproton collision at Tevatron can contribute to our study on the spin structure of the nucleon.
We calculate the Sivers and $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries in $J/ψ$ production in polarized and unpolarized semi-inclusive $ep$ collision respectively, using the formalism based on transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). Non-relativistic QCD based color octet model is employed for calculating the $J/ψ$ production rate. The Sivers asymmetry in this process directly probes the gluon Sivers function. The estimated Sivers asymmetry at $z=1$ is negative which is in good agreement with COMPASS data. We also investigate the effect of TMD evolution on the Sivers asymmetry. The $\cos…
We investigate the cos 2 phi azimuthal asymmetry in Drell--Yan and J/psi production from unpolarized ppbar scattering at GSI-HESR energies. The contribution to this asymmetry arising from the leading-twist Boer-Mulders function h_1^perp(x, k_T^2), which describes a correlation between the transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks in an unpolarized hadron, is explicitly evaluated, and predictions for the GSI-HESR kinematic regime are presented. We show that the cos 2 phi asymmetry is quite sizable both on the J/psi peak and in the Drell-Yan continuum region. Therefore these processe…
We study the $\cos 2 ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized semi-inclusive DIS, taking into account both the perturbative contribution (gluon emission and splitting) and the non perturbative effects arising from intrinsic transverse motion and transverse spin of quarks. In particular we explore the possibility to extract from $<\cos 2 ϕ>$ some information about the Boer--Mulders function $h_1^{\perp}$, which represents a transverse--polarization asymmetry of quarks inside an unpolarized hadron. Predictions are presented for the HERMES, COMPASS and JLab kinematics, where $<\cos 2 ϕ>$ is dominate…
We investigate the origin of the cos 2 phi azimuthal asymmetry in unpolarized semiinclusive DIS. The contributions to this asymmetry arising from the intrinsic transverse motion of quarks are explicitly evaluated, and predictions for the HERMES and COMPASS kinematic regimes are presented. We show that the effect of the leading-twist Boer-Mulders function h_1^perp(x, k_T^2), which describes a correlation between the transverse momentum and the transverse spin of quarks, is quite significant and may also account for a part of the cos 2 phi asymmetry measured by ZEUS in the perturbative domain.
We calculate the Boer-Mulders effect contribution to the $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry of unpolarized dilepton production near the $Z$-pole. Based on the tree-level expression in the transverse momentum dependent factorization framework, we show that the corresponding asymmetry near the $Z$-pole is negative, which is opposite to the asymmetry in the low $Q^2$ region, dominated by the production via a virtual photon. We calculate the asymmetry generated by the Boer-Mulders effect near the $Z$-pole at RHIC, with $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV. We find that the magnitude of the asymmetry is several percent, a…
We present a phenomenological analysis of the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetry recently measured by the COMPASS and HERMES collaborations in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In the kinematical regimes explored by these experiments the asymmetry arises from transverse-spin and intrinsic transverse-momentum effects. We consider the leading-twist contribution, related to the so-called Boer-Mulders transverse-polarization distribution $h_1^{\perp}(x, k_T^2)$, and the twist-4 Cahn contribution, involving unpolarized transverse-momentum distribution functions. We show that a reasonably good…
We calculate the non-zero Boer-Mulders functions of sea quarks inside the proton in a meson-baryon fluctuation model. The results show that the transverse spin effects of sea quarks in an unpolarized nucleon are sizable. Using the obtained antiquark Boer-Mulders functions, we estimate the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in the unpolarized $pp$ and $p D$ Drell-Yan processes at FNAL E866/NuSea experiments. The prediction for the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in the unpolarized $pp$ Drell-Yan process at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is also given.
We study the azimuthal $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as probes of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where the azimuth $φ$ is the angle between the lepton scattering plane $(l,l^{\prime})$ and the heavy quark production plane $(N,Q)$. First, we determine the maximal values for the $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries allowed by the photon-gluon fusion with unpolarized gluons; these predictions are large, $(\sqrt{3}-1)/2$ and $1/3$, respectively. Then we calculate the contribution of the transverse-mo…
We show that measuring the $\cos 2ϕ$ angular dependence in unpolarized Drell-Yan processes with $π^-$ beams colliding on proton and deuteron targets can determine the ratio of the Boer-Mulders functions for $d$ and $u$ quarks inside the proton $h_1^{\perp,d}/h_1^{\perp,u}$, which is still lack of theoretical constraint. The comparison of the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries measured in unpolarized $π^- p$ and $π^- D$ Drell-Yan processes, which are accessible at CERN by the COMPASS collaboration, can help to discriminate whether $h_1^\perp$ effects or QCD vacuum effects are preferred by data.
We extract the Boer-Mulders functions for the proton by combining the unpolarized pd and pp Drell-Yan data measured by the E866/NuSea Collaboration by the assumption that the $\cos 2ϕ$ asymmetry is from the Boer-Mulders function. Using the extracted Boer-Mulders functions, we present the predictions for the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in future pp experiments at J-PARC and $p \bar{p}$ experiments at PANDA and PAX.
We present a calculation of the $cos (2 ϕ_h)$ asymmetry in $J/ψ$ production in electron-proton collision at the future electron-ion collider (EIC), a useful channel to probe the gluon TMDs. We calculate the asymmetry at next-to-leading order (NLO) in $α_s$ in the framework of generalized factorization. The dominating sub-process is $γ^* +g \rightarrow J/ψ+g$. The production of $J/ψ$ is calculated in the non-relativistic QCD(NRQCD) framework with the inclusion of both color singlet and color octet contributions. Numerical estimates of the $cos(2ϕ_h)$ asymmetry are given in the kinematical regio…
In recent papers [1,2], two new ways have been proposed to probe the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized proton: using the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio in heavy-quark pair leptoproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$. In this talk, we discuss in details the sensitivity of the QCD predictions for the azimuthal $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ asymmetries to the contribution of linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized proton, where the azimuth $φ$ is the angle between the lepton scattering plane $(l,l^{\prime})$ and the heavy quark production plane $(N,Q)$. Our analysi…
Semi-inclusive $J/ψ$ production in electron-proton collisions is a promising process to study gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) at the future Electron-Ion Collider. In this article, we improve on previous studies of the $\cos 2 ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry that arises from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons by including TMD evolution. We find that in the TMD regime the asymmetry grows monotonically with increasing transverse momentum of the outgoing $J/ψ$, in contrast to tree level calculations with Gaussian TMDs. Our predictions for the asymmetry at EIC can be…
We analyse the role of partonic transverse motion in unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes. Imposing appropriate kinematical conditions, we find some constraints which fix an upper limit to the range of allowed kt values and lead to interesting results, particularly for some observables like the <cos phi_h> azimuthal modulation of the unpolarized SIDIS cross section and the average transverse momentum of the final, detected hadron.
We present a phenomenological analysis of the cos-phi and cos-2phi asymmetries in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, based on the recent multidimensional data released by the COMPASS and HERMES Collaborations. In the TMD framework, valid at relatively low transverse momenta, these asymmetries arise from intrinsic transverse momentum and transverse spin effects, and from their correlations. The role of the Cahn and Boer-Mulders effects in both azimuthal moments is explored up to order 1/Q. As the kinematics of the present experiments is dominated by the low-Q^2 region, higher…
We calculate the two leading-twist transverse momentum dependent distribution functions of the pion meson, the unpolarized distribution $f_{1π}(x,\bm{k}^2_T)$ and the Boer-Mulders function $h_{1π}^\perp (x,\bm{k}^2_T)$, using the pion wave functions derived from a light-cone approach. The evolution effect of the first $\bm k_T$-moment of the pion Boer-Mulders function is studied by employing an approximate evolution kernel. Using the model resulting distributions, we predict the transverse momentum weighted $\cos2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in the unpolarized $π^- p$ Drell-Yan process which can be …
We show that initial-state interactions contribute to the $\cos 2 ϕ$ distribution in unpolarized Drell-Yan lepton pair production $p p$ and $ p \bar p \to \ell^+ \ell^- X$, without suppression. The asymmetry is expressed as a product of chiral-odd distributions $h_1^\perp(x_1,\bm{p}_\perp^2)\times \bar h_1^\perp(x_2,\bm{k}_\perp^2) $, where the quark-transversity function $h_1^\perp(x,\bm{p}_\perp^2)$ is the transverse momentum dependent, light-cone momentum distribution of transversely polarized quarks in an {\it unpolarized} proton. We compute this (naive) $T$-odd and chiral-odd distribution…
We consider the azimuthal $\cos φ$ and $\cos 2φ$ distributions and the Callan-Gross ratio $R={\rm d}σ_L/{\rm d}σ_T$ in heavy-quark pair electroproduction, $lN\rightarrow l^{\prime}Q\bar{Q}X$, as probes of linearly polarized gluons in unpolarized nucleons. Our analysis shows that the azimuthal asymmetries and Callan-Gross ratio are predicted to be large and very sensitive to the contribution of the gluonic counterpart of the Boer-Mulders function, $h_{1}^{\perp g}$, describing the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized nucleon. In particular, the maximum values of the azimuthal distri…
We show that linearly polarized gluons inside unpolarized hadrons can be directly probed in jet or heavy quark pair production in electron-hadron collisions. We discuss the simplest cos (2 phi) asymmetries and estimate their maximal value, concluding that measurements of the unknown linearly polarized gluon distribution in the proton should be feasible in future EIC or LHeC experiments. Analogous asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions suffer from factorization breaking contributions and would allow to quantify the importance of initial and final state interactions.
Gluons inside unpolarized hadrons can be linearly polarized provided they have a nonzero transverse momentum. The simplest and theoretically safest way to probe this distribution of linearly polarized gluons is through cos(2 phi) asymmetries in heavy quark pair or dijet production in electron-hadron collisions. Future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) or Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) experiments are ideally suited for this purpose. Here we estimate the maximum asymmetries for EIC kinematics.
We extract the Boer-Mulders functions of valence and sea quarks in the proton from unpolarized $p+D$ Drell-Yan data measured by the FNAL E866 Collaboration. Using these Boer-Mulders functions, we calculate the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in unpolarized $pp$ Drell-Yan processes, both for the FNAL E866/NuSea and the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) experiments. We also estimate the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetries in the unpolarized $p\bar{p}$ Drell-Yan processes at GSI.
We consider the azimuthal distribution of the final observed hadron in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and the lepton pair in the Drell-Yan process. In particular, we focus on the $\cos ϕ$ modulation of the unpolarized cross section and on its dependence upon transverse momentum. At low transverse momentum, for these observables we propose a factorized expression based on tree-level approach and conjecture that the same formula is valid in transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorization when written in terms of subtracted TMD parton distributions. Our formula correctly matches with …
Using a previous extraction of the quark Boer-Mulders distributions from semiinclusive deep inelastic scattering data, we fit the unpolarized Drell-Yan data on the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetry, determining the antiquark Boer-Mulders distributions. A good agreement with the data is found in the region of low $q_T$, where the transverse-momentum factorization approach applies.
The COMPASS Collaboration is measuring the asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) on unpolarized protons. The data have been collected in 2016 and 2017 with a 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam scattering off a liquid hydrogen target. The amplitudes of three modulations, $A_{UU}^{\cosϕ_h}$, $A_{UU}^{\cos 2ϕ_h}$ and $A_{LU}^{\sinϕ_h}$ are measured as function of the Bjorken variable $x$, of the fraction of virtual photon energy carried by the hadron $z$, and of the hadron transverse momentum with respect to the virtual photon $…
We analyse the role of partonic transverse motion in unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes. Imposing appropriate kinematical conditions, we find some constraints which fix an upper limit to the range of allowed k_perp values. We show that, applying these additional requirements on the partonic kinematics, we obtain different results with respect to the usual phenomenological approach based on the Gaussian smearing with analytical integration over an unlimited range of k_perp values. These variations are particularly interesting for some observables, like the < …
Fixed-target unpolarized Drell-Yan experiments often feature an acceptance depending on the polar angle of the lepton tracks in the laboratory frame. Typically leptons are detected in a defined angular range, with a dead zone in the forward region. If the cutoffs imposed by the angular acceptance are independent of the azimuth, at first sight they do not appear dangerous for a measurement of the cos(2ϕ)-asymmetry, relevant because of its association with the violation of the Lam-Tung rule and with the Boer-Mulders function. On the contrary, direct simulations show that up to 10 percent asymmet…
In this paper, we study the azimuthal asymmetry in the $J/ψ$ leptoproduction in unpolarized $ep$ collisions. There are two independent azimuthal asymmetry modulations, namely $\mathrm{cos}(ψ)$ and $\mathrm{cos}(2ψ)$, where $ψ$ is the azimuthal angle of the lepton scattering plane with respect to the hadron-interacting plane. We calculate the two modulations as functions of four kinematic variables, and find that they provide a very good laboratory to distinguish several models describing the heavy quarkonium production, including the color-singlet (CS) model, the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) as…
Taking into account the effect of final state interaction, we calculate the non-zero (naïve) $T$-odd transverse momentum dependent distribution $h_1^{\perp}(x,\kp^2)$ of the pion in a quark-spectator-antiquark model with effective pion-quark-antiquark coupling as a dipole form factor. Using the model result we estimate the $\cos 2ϕ$ asymmetries in the unpolarized $π^- N$ Drell-Yan process which can be expressed as $h_1^{\perp}\times\bar{h}_1^{\perp}$. We find that the resulting $h_{1π}^\p(x,\kp^2)$ has the advantage to reproduce the asymmetry that agrees with the experimental data measured by …
A new Monte-Carlo generator including real radiated photons in DIS on polarized and unpolarized targets is presented. Analytical and numerical tests are performed and discussed in details.
We discuss the structure functions and the parton distributions in the virtual photon target, both polarized and unpolarized, beyond the leading order in QCD. We study the factorization-scheme dependence of the parton distributions.
I review the phenomenology of unpolarized cross sections and azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The general theoretical framework is presented and the validity of the Gaussian model is discussed. A brief account of the existing analyses is provided.
Approximate relations among transverse momentum dependent quark distribution functions are established in the framework of the QCD parton model. The validity of such results survives QCD evolution effects, owing to the Politzer theorem on equations of motion. Furthermore the model fixes an energy scale, involved in the parametrization of the correlator, which determines the Q^2 dependence of the azimuthal asymmetry in inclusive reactions. Some of the present data - the cos2ϕsymmetry in unpolarized Drell-Yan, the sin2ϕsingle spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and…
A brief overview is presented of recent developments concerning resummed small-x evolution, based upon the renormalization group equation. The non-singlet and singlet structure functions are discussed for both polarized and unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. Quantitative results are displayed and uncertainties from uncalculated subleading terms are discussed.
We investigate the theoretical framework of the $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry contributed by the coupling of two Boer-Mulders functions in the dilepton production unpolarized $πp$ Drell-Yan process by applying the transverse momentum dependent factorization at leading order. We adopt the model calculation results of the unpolarized distribution function $f_1$ and Boer-Mulders function $h_1^\perp$ of pion meson from the light-cone wave functions. We take into account the transverse momentum evolution effects for both the distribution functions of pion and proton by adopting the existed extracti…
A statistical model for the parton distributions in the nucleon has proven its efficiency in the analysis of deep inelastic scattering data, so we propose to extend this approach to the description of unpolarized fragmentation functions for the octet baryons. The characteristics of the model are determined by using some data on the inclusive production of proton and $Λ$ in unpolarized deep inelastic scattering and a next-to-leading analysis of the available experimental data on the production of unpolarized octet baryons in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Our results show that both parton distributions…
DIS of unpolarized electron by tensor-polarized deuteron with tagged collinear photon, radiated from initial electron, was considered. The cross section is derived in the Born approximation. The model-independent QED corrections to the Born cross section are also calculated using approach based on the account of all essential Feynman diagrams.
We discuss the combination of NNLO standard QCD evolution and scheme-invariant analysis for unpolarized DIS structure functions data as a method to reduce the theoretical errors on the determination of $α_s(M_Z^2)$ to $\sim 1$% in order to match the accuracy forseen for experimental errors from future high statistics measurements.
Starting from Martin, Roberts and Stirling fit for unpolarized deep inelastic structure functions and using the newest experimental data on spin asymmetries we get a fit which provides polarized quark distributions. We analyze the behaviour of such functions near $x$ equal to 1. The first moments of these distributions are also discussed. Our fit prefers combination of proton and neutron data versus proton-deuteron one.
We discuss possible origins of transverse spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions and propose an explanation in terms of a chiral-odd T-odd distribution function with intrinsic transverse momentum dependence, which would signal a correlation between the transverse spin and the transverse momentum of quarks inside an unpolarized hadron. We will argue that despite its conceptual problems, it can account for single spin asymmetries, for example in p + p(transversely polarized) -> pion + X, and at the same time for the large cos(2 phi) asymmetry in the unpolarized Drell-Yan cross section, whi…
The long-standing problem of transverse Lambda polarization in high-energy collisions of unpolarized hadrons can be tackled by considering new, spin and k_T-dependent quark fragmentation functions for an unpolarized quark into a polarized, spin-1/2 hadron. Simple phenomenological parameterizations of these new "polarizing fragmentation functions", which describe quite well the experimental data on Lambda and Lambda-bar hyperons produced in p-A processes, are utilized and extended here to give predictions for transverse Lambda polarization in semi-inclusive DIS
Recent data from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering collected by the HERMES collaboration allow for the first time to discuss how the transverse-momentum dependence of unpolarized distribution and fragmentation functions is affected by the flavor of the involved partons. A model built with flavor-dependent Gaussian transverse-momentum distributions fits data better than the same flavor-independent model. The current analysis is performed for totally unpolarized scattering of leptons off protons and deuterons, with detected pions in the final state. There are convincing indications of fla…
We present the extraction of unpolarized quark transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and the non-perturbative part of TMD evolution kernel from the global analysis of Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production data. The analysis is performed at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD, using the $ζ$-prescription. The estimation of the error-propagation from the experimental uncertainties to non-perturbative function is made by the replica method. The importance of the inclusion of the precise LHC data and its influence on the determination of non-per…
We determine the two-loop 'time-like' Altarelli-Parisi splitting functions, appearing in the next-to-leading order Q^2-evolution equations for fragmentation functions, via analytic continuation of the corresponding 'space-like' splitting functions for the evolution of parton distributions. We do this for the case of unpolarized fragmentation functions and - for the first time - also for the functions describing the fragmentation of a longitudinally polarized parton into a longitudinally polarized spin-1/2 hadron such as a Lambda baryon. Our calculation is based on the method proposed and emplo…
A statistical analysis of the elastic unpolarized electron proton scattering data shows that, at large momentum transfer, the size and the $ε$ dependence of the radiative corrections, as traditionally calculated and applied, may induce large correlations of the parameters of the Rosenbluth fit, which prevent a correct extraction of the electric proton form factor. Using the electron QED structure (radiation) function approach the cross section of elastic electron-proton scattering in leading and next-to leading approximations is calculated and expressed as a correction to the Born cross sectio…
Mellin moments of off-forward distribution functions are even polynomials of the skewedness parameter. This constraint, called polynomiality property, follows from Lorentz- and time-reversal invariance. We prove that the unpolarized off-forward distribution functions in the chiral quark-soliton model satisfy the polynomiality property. The proof is an important contribution to the demonstration that the description of off-forward distribution functions in the model is consistent. As a byproduct of the proof we derive explicit model expressions for moments of the D-term and compute the first co…
We apply the picture proposed in a previous Letter, which relates the hyperon polarization in unpolarized hadron-hadron collisions to the left-right asymmetry in singly polarized reactions, to the production of different hyperons in reactions using different projectiles and/or targets. We discuss the different ingredients of the proposed picture in detail and present the results for hyperon polarization in the reactions such as $pp$, $K^-p$, $π^{\pm}p$, and $Σ^-p$ collisions. We compare the results with the available data and make predictions for future experiments.
We examine the unparticle CP-conserving phase effects on the direct CP asymmetry for both polarized and unpolarized lepton in the inclusive $b\to d \ell^+ \ell^-$ transition, where the flavor changing neutral currents are forbidden at tree level but are induced by one-loop penguin diagrams. The averaged polarized and unpolarized CP asymmetries depict strong dependency on the unparticle parameters. In particular, a sizable discrepancy corresponding to the standard model is achieved when the scale dimension value is $1<d_{\UP}< 2$. We see that the unparticle stuff significantly enhances, suppres…
We discuss the dependence on the flavor of the intrinsic transverse momentum in unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions (TMD PDFs) and fragmentation functions (TMD FFs) analyzing data of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) released by the HERMES collaboration. Adopting a flavor-dependent Gaussian model in the transverse momentum and neglecting QCD evolution, we find interesting evidences concerning the flavor dependence in TMD FFs, whereas the indications are weaker in TMD PDFs and deserve further investigations. Inclusions of new data sets of SIDIS, elect…
We present numerical solutions of the $Q^2$ evolution equations at next-to-leading order (NLO) for unpolarized and polarized parton distributions, in both the flavor non-singlet and singlet channels. The numerical method is based on a contour integration algorithm in complex-moment space, and, unlike most standard fitting techniques, is not restricted to the use of analytic moments of distributions. We also compute analytic continuations of the recently calculated singlet anomalous dimensions, needed for evolving polarized quark and gluon distributions at NLO. Using these we study the NLO effe…
Partonic intrinsic transverse momentum can be essential for the explanation of large single spin asymmetries in hadronic reactions in the framework of perturbative QCD. The status of an ongoing program investigating in a consistent way the role of intrinsic transverse momentum both in unpolarized and polarized processes is discussed. We compute inclusive cross sections for hadron and photon production in hadronic collisions and for Drell-Yan processes; the results are compared with available experimental data in several different kinematical situations.
We investigate the heavy quark mass effects on the parton distribution functions in the unpolarized virtual photon up to the next-to-leading order in QCD. Our formalism is based on the QCD-improved parton model described by the DGLAP evolution equation as well as on the operator product expansion supplemented by the mass-independent renormalization group method. We evaluate the various components of the parton distributions inside the virtual photon with the massive quark effects, which are included through the initial condition for the heavy quark distributions, or equivalently from the matri…
A systematic study is performed of the impact of the various resummed small-$x$ contributions to the anomalous dimensions and coefficient functions on the evolution of unpolarized structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering. The proton structure functions $F_2^p$ and $F_L^p$ as well as the photon structure function $F_2^γ$ are considered together with the corresponding parton densities. The general analytic solution of the evolution equations in Mellin-$N$ space is derived, and different approximate solutions are compared. Potential effects of less singular small-$x$ terms in the anomalou…
The role of various symmetries in the evaluation of splitting functions and coefficient functions is discussed. The scale invariance in hard processes is known to be a guiding tool to understand the dynamics. We discuss the constraints on splitting functions coming from various symmetries such as scale, conformal and supersymmetry. We also discuss the Drell-Levy-Yan relation among splitting and coefficient functions in various schemes. The relations coming from conformal symmetry are also presented.
We present a decomposition of the hadronic tensor for a general polarized Drell-Yan process AB --> l^+ l^- X in terms of helicity structure functions using the helicity axes of the dilepton rest frame as a basis. Next, we consider a QCD parton model and in the framework of a generalized QCD factorization scheme, which applies when the dilepton invariant mass M is much larger than the transverse component of the photon momentum, q_T, in the hadronic center of mass frame. In this approximation we compute the angular distribution of the unpolarized Drell Yan cross section and of the Sivers effect…
The possibility of the first measurement of Bjorken unpolarized sum rule for $F_1$ structure function of $νN$ deep-inelastic scattering at Neutrino Factories is commented. The brief summary of various theoretical contributions to this sum rule is given. Using the next-to-leading set of parton distributions functions, we simulate the expected $Q^2$-behavior and emphasize that its measurement can allow to determine the value of the QCD strong coupling constant $α_s$ with reasonable theoretical uncertainty, dominated by the ambiguity in the existing estimates of the twist-4 non-perturbative $1/Q^…
We map the distribution of unpolarized quarks inside a unpolarized pion as a function of the quark's transverse momentum, encoded in unpolarized Transverse Momentum Distributions (TMDs). We extract the pion TMDs from available data of unpolarized pion-nucleus Drell-Yan processes, where the cross section is differential in the lepton-pair transverse momentum. In the cross section, pion TMDs are convoluted with nucleon TMDs that we consistently take from our previous studies. We obtain a fairly good agreement with data. We present also predictions for pion-nucleus scattering that is being measur…
