We explore the possibility to observe hard exclusive three-jet production in early LHC runs, corresponding to diffractive dissociation of the incident proton into three jets with large but compensating transverse momenta. This process is sensitive to the proton unintegrated gluon distribution at small x and to the distribution of the three valence quarks in the proton at small transverse distances. The corresponding cross section is calculated using an approach based on k_t factorization. According to our estimates, observation of hard diffractive three-jet production at LHC is feasible for jet transverse momenta q_perp \sim 5 GeV.
We present the cross sections for both electromagnetic and diffractive dissociation of protons for semiexclusive production of $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Differential distributions in missing mass ($M_X$), as well as distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum of the $J/ψ$ are calculated for $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV and 13 TeV proton proton collisions. We compare the distributions for purely electromagnetic and purely diffractive proton excitations/dissociation. We predict cross sections for electromagnetic and diffractive excitations of similar order of magnitude.
We calculate the cross sections for both electromagnetic and diffractive dissociation of protons for semiexclusive production of $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Several differential distributions in missing mass ($M_X$), or single-particle variables related exclusively to the $J/ψ$ meson are calculated for $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV as an example. The cross sections and distributions are compared to the cross section of the purely exclusive reaction $p p \to p p J/ψ$. We show the corresponding ratio as a function of $J/ψ$ meson rapidity. We compare the distributions for purely ele…
We study the impact factor for the photon to quark, antiquark and gluon transition within Balitsky's shock-wave formalism. Our aim is to extend existing results beyond approximations discussed in the literature. We present our results of the real contribution, and present some intermediate results on virtual contributions for the photon to quark, antiquark transition.
We use duality to relate resonances in missing mass $M$ to the large-mass diffraction dissociation of protons. In deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering (DIS), hadronic resonances are related by duality in $Q^2$ to the low-$x$, smooth behaviour of the DIS structure functions.
Recent results by the authors on proton diffractive dissociation (single, double and central) in the low-mass resonance region with emphasis on the LHC kinematics are reviewed and updated. Based on the previous ideas that the contribution of the inelastic proton-Pomeron vertex can be described by the proton structure function, the contribution of the inelastic Pomeron-Pomeron vertex appearing in central diffraction is now described by a Pomeron structure function.
We calculate distributions of different vector mesons in purely exclusive ($p p \to p p V$) and semi-exclusive ($p p \to p X V$) processes with electromagnetic dissociation of a proton. The cross section for the electromagnetic dissociation is expressed through electromagnetic structure functions of the proton. We include the transverse momentum distribution of initial photons in the associated flux. Contributions of the exclusive and semi-exclusive processes are compared for different vector mesons ($V = ϕ, J/ψ, Υ$). We discuss how the relative contribution of the semi-exclusive processes dep…
We discuss the production of $t\bar t$ quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions via the $γγ$ fusion mechanism. We include topologies in which both protons stay intact or one or even both of them undergo dissociation. The calculations are performed within the $k_{\rm T}$-factorisation approach, including transverse momenta of intermediate photons. Photon fluxes associated to inelastic (dissociative) processes are calculated based on modern parameterisations of proton structure functions. We find an integrated cross section of about 2.36 fb at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV for all contributions. T…
We describe a QCD based model which incorporates the main properties of the inclusive particle distributions expected for diffractive processes, including the diffractive dissociation at high energies. We study, in turn, the total cross section, $σ_{tot}$, the differential elastic, $dσ_{el}/dt$, cross section, the dependence of the single proton dissociation cross section, $ξd^{SD}/dξ$, on the momentum fraction, $ξ= 1-x_L$, lost by the leading proton, the multiplicity distributions in inelastic (non-diffractive) collisions and in the processes of dissociation. Besides this we calculate the mea…
Diffractive dissociation processes are analysed in the framework of covariant reggeization. We have considered the general form of hadronic tensor and its asymptotic behaviour for $t\rightarrow 0$ in the case of conserved tensor currents before reggeization. Resulting expressions for differential cross-section of single dissociation (SD) process ($pp \rightarrow p M$), double dissociation (DD) ($pp\rightarrow M_1 M_2$) and for the proton-Pomeron cross-section are given in detail, and corresponding problems of the approach are discussed.
A dual-Regge model with a nonlinear proton Regge trajectory in the missing mass channel, describing the experimental data on low-mass single diffraction dissociation, is constructed. Predictions for the LHC energies are given.
The cross section for the nuclear diffractive dissociation in proton-lead collisions at the LHC is estimated. Based on the current theoretical uncertainties for the single (target) diffactive cross section in hadron-hadron reactions one obtains sigma_SD(5.02 TeV) = 19.67 \pm 5.41 mb and sigma_SD(8.8 TeV) = 18.76 \pm 5.77 mb, respectively. The invariant mass M_X for the reaction pPb -> pX is also analyzed. Discussion is performed on the main theoretical uncertainties associated to the calculations.
High energy (CERN SPS and LHC) $pp$ ($p\bar p$) scattering is treated in the framework of Additive Quark Model together with Pomeron exchange theory. The reasonable agreement with experimental data is achieved both for the elastic scattering and for the diffractive dissociation with natural parameters for the strong matter distribution inside proton.
We discuss diffractive dissociation of gluons into heavy quark pairs. The particular mechanism is similar to the diffractive dissociation of virtual photons into quarks, which drives diffractive deep inelastic production of charm in the low-mass diffraction, or large $β$-region. There, it can be understood, with some reservations, in terms of a valence heavy quark content of the Pomeron. The amplitude for the $g p \to Q \bar Q p$ is derived in the impact parameter and momentum space. The cross section for single diffractive $p p \to Q \bar Q p X$ is calculated as a convolution of the elementar…
We present a formalism which uses fluxes of equivalent photons including transverse momenta of the intermediate photons. The formalism reminds the familiar $k_t$-factorization approach used, e.g., to study the two-photon production of $c\bar{c}$ or $b\bar{b}$ pairs. The results of the new method are compared with those obtained using the code LPAIR, and a good agreement is obtained. The inclusion of the photon transverse momenta is necessary in studies of correlation observables. We present distributions for the dimuon invariant mass, transverse momentum of the muon pair and relative azimuthal…
At forward rapidities and high energies we expect to probe the non-linear regime of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). One of the most promising observables to constrain the QCD dynamics in this regime is exclusive vector meson photoproduction (EVMP). We study the EVMP in association with a leading baryon (product of the proton dissociation) in photon-hadron interactions that take place in $pp$ and $p$Pb collisions at large impact parameters. We present the rapidity distributions for $ρ$ and $J/ψ$ photoproduction in association with a leading baryon (neutron and delta states) at LHC run 2 energies.…
We consider the $pp \to pp ρ^{0} π^{0}$ and $pp \to pn ρ^{0} π^{+}$ processes at LHC energies. Our description is based on the nonperturbative framework of tensor pomeron and tensor reggeon exchanges. We discuss the Drell-Hiida-Deck type mechanism with centrally produced $ρ^{0}$ meson associated with a very forward/backward $πN$ system. The considered processes constitute an inelastic (non-exclusive) background to the $p p \to p p ρ^0$ reaction in the case when only the centrally produced $ρ^{0}$ meson decaying into $π^{+} π^{-}$ is measured, the final state protons are not observed, and only …
The different modifications of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the relative sizes of the modification of quark and gluon jets differ between theoretical models. Therefore, a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We perform a proof-of-concept study based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the \textsc{Pyquen} generator with stati…
I report on the recent result of comparison of forward-forward dijet correlations in azimuthal angle as measured by the ATLAS collaboration in the proton-proton and proton-lead collisions to calculations within ITMD factorization framework [1]. The comparison shows that the broadening effect due to interplay of both the gluon saturation and the Sudakov resummation is necessary to describe the data.
The modification of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the size of the modifications in the quark-gluon plasma differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. Corroborating past results, I demonstrate the capability of a fully data-driven technique called topic modeling in separating quark and gluon contributions to …
Annihilation process of proton and antiproton to guark antiquark pair accompanied by emission of two additional gluon jets with intermediate state of vector meson is considered.Strong azimuthal correlation is revealed of two gluonic jets, effectively created in the same plane. Some applications to cosmic ray events and to LHC experiments are discussed.
We study modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV due to mini-quark-gluon plasma which can be produced in high multiplicity events. We show that for underlying events with $dN_{ch}/dη\sim 20-60$ the medium effects lead to a considerable modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jet fragmentation functions. For inclusive jets the magnitude of the effect is surprisingly large. The effect is quite strong even for typical underlying events. We find that at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV the spectrum of charged hadrons is suppressed by $\sim 35-40$ % at $p…
We study the medium modification factor $I_{pp}$ within the light-cone path integral approach to induced gluon emission. We use parametrization of the running coupling $α_s(Q,T)$ which has a plateau around $Q\sim κT$. We calculate $I_{pp}$ with no free parameters using $κ$ fitted to the LHC data on the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$. We find that the theoretical multiplicity dependence of the ratio $I_{pp}/\langle I_{pp}\rangle$ for $5.02$ TeV $pp$ collisions agrees reasonably with the recent preliminary data from ALICE [1].
Experimental findings of CMS on properties of jets and underlying events at high multiplicities in proton-proton interactions at 7 TeV are interpreted as an indication of increasing role of central collisions with small impact parameters. We find an indication that the rates of different hard processes observed by CMS and ALICE universally depend on underlying event charged-particles multiplicity until it becomes four times more than average. It is shown that the increase of the overlap area of colliding protons is not sufficient for explanation of the rate of jet production in events with cha…
We calculate the cross section for production of a soft photon and two hard jets in the forward rapidity region in proton-nucleus collisions at high energies. The calculation is performed within the hybrid formalism. The hardness of the final particles is defined with respect to the saturation scale of the nucleus. We consider both the correlation limit of small momentum imbalance and the dilute target limit where the momentum imbalance is of the order of the hardness of the jets. The results depend on the first two transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) gluon distributions of the nucleus.
We present the results of the new SuperChic 4 Monte Carlo implementation of photon-initiated production in proton-proton collisions, considering as a first example the case of lepton pair production. This is based on the structure function calculation of the underlying process, and focusses on a complete account of the various contributing channels, including the case where a rapidity gap veto is imposed. We provide a careful treatment of the contributions where either (single dissociation), both (double dissociation) or neither (elastic) proton interacts inelastically and dissociates, and int…
We investigate the forward-jet energy spectrum within the Color Glass Condensate framework at 5 TeV center-of-mass energy. In particular, we focus on the kinematic range covered by the CMS-CASTOR calorimeter. We show that our saturation-model calculations are compatible with the CASTOR measurements and that to optimally reproduce the data, effects of multi-parton interactions need to be included. We predict a significant nuclear suppression - reaching down to 50% at the lowest considered jet energies $E_{\rm jet} \sim 500 \, {\rm GeV}$.
Events with vector bosons produced in association with jets have been extensively studied at hadron colliders and provide high-accuracy tests of the Standard Model. A good understanding of these processes is of paramount importance for precision Higgs physics, as well as for searches for new physics. In particular, associated production of $γ$, $W$ or $Z$ bosons with light-flavor and heavy-flavor jets is a powerful tool for testing perturbative QCD calculations, Monte Carlo event generators, and can also constrain the parametrizations used to describe the parton content of the proton. Furtherm…
Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) host powerful jets containing high-energy electrons and protons. The astrophysical environment where AGNs and their jets are found is characterized by large concentrations of both dark matter (DM) and intra-cluster medium (ICM) gas. As the high-energy jet particles transverse the DM and the ICM, elastic and inelastic scattering processes generically lead to the production of final-state photons. As first envisioned by Bloom and Wells (1998), and as more recently pointed out by us and others, the scattering of electrons off of DM could lead to a potentially detectab…
