We present a Gaussianity analysis of the WMAP 5-year Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy data maps. We use several third order estimators based on the spherical Mexican hat wavelet. We impose constraints on the local non-linear coupling parameter fnl using well motivated non-Gaussian simulations. We analyse the WMAP maps at resolution of 6.9 arcmin for the Q, V, and W frequency bands. We use the KQ75 mask recommended by the WMAP team which masks out 28% of the sky. The wavelet coefficients are evaluated at 10 different scales from 6.9 to 150 arcmin. With these coefficients we compute the third order estimators which are used to perform a chi-squared analysis. The chi-squared statistic is used to test the Gaussianity of the WMAP data as well as to constrain the fnl parameter. Our results indicate that the WMAP data are compatible with the Gaussian simulations, and the fnl parameter is constrained to -8 < fnl < +111 at 95% CL for the combined V+W map. This value has been corrected for the presence of undetected point sources, which add a positive contribution of Delta_fnl = 3+-5 in the V+W map. Our results are very similar to those obtained by Komatsu et al (2008) using the bispectrum.
We present evidence for the detection of primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type (fNL), using the temperature information of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) from the WMAP 3-year data. We employ the bispectrum estimator of non-Gaussianity described in (Yadav et al. 2007) which allows us to analyze the entirety of the WMAP data without an arbitrary cut-off in angular scale. Using the combined information from WMAP's two main science channels up to lmax=750 and the conservative Kp0 foreground mask we find 27 < fNL < 147 at 95% C.L., with a central value of fNL=87. This corresponds to a…
We look for a non-Gaussian signal in the WMAP 5-year temperature anisotropy maps by performing a needlet-based data analysis. We use the foreground-reduced maps obtained by the WMAP team through the optimal combination of the W, V and Q channels, and perform realistic non-Gaussian simulations in order to constrain the non-linear coupling parameter $\fnl$. We apply a third-order estimator of the needlet coefficients skewness and compute the $χ^2$ statistics of its distribution. We obtain $-80<\fnl<120$ at 95% confidence level, which is consistent with a Gaussian distribution and comparable to p…
We present an analysis of the Minkowski Functionals (MFs) describing the WMAP three-year temperature maps to place limits on possible levels of primordial non-Gaussianity. In particular, we apply perturbative formulae for the MFs to give constraints on the usual non-linear coupling constant fNL. The theoretical predictions are found to agree with the MFs of simulated CMB maps including the full effects of radiative transfer. The agreement is also very good even when the simulation maps include various observational artifacts, including the pixel window function, beam smearing, inhomogeneous no…
We cross correlate the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) first year data and the diffuse gamma-ray intensity maps from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) using spherical wavelet approaches. Correlations at 99.7% significance level have been detected, at scales around $15^{\circ}$ in the WMAP foreground cleaned W-band and Q-band maps, based on data from regions that are outside the most conservative WMAP foreground mask; no significant correlation is found with the Tegmark cleaned map. The detected correlation is most likely of Galactic origin, and thus can help us p…
We repeat the directional spherical real Morlet wavelet analysis, used to detect non-Gaussianity in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 1-year and 3-year data (McEwen et al. 2005, 2006a), on the WMAP 5-year data. The non-Gaussian signal detected previously is present in the 5-year data at a slightly increased statistical significance of approximately 99%. Localised regions that contribute most strongly to the non-Gaussian signal are found to be very similar to those detected in the previous releases of the WMAP data. When the localised regions detected in the 5-year data are exclud…
We perform a wavelet analysis of the temperature and polarization maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) delivered by the WMAP experiment in search for a parity violating signal. Such a signal could be seeded by new physics beyond the standard model, for which the Lorentz and CPT symmetries may not hold. Under these circumstances, the linear polarization direction of a CMB photon may get rotated during its cosmological journey, a phenomenon also called cosmological birefringence. Recently, Feng et al. have analyzed a subset the WMAP and BOOMERanG 2003 angular power spectra of the CMB, d…
We repeat the directional spherical real Morlet wavelet analysis used to detect non-Gaussianity in the WMAP 1-year data (McEwen et al. 2005a), on the WMAP 3-year data. The non-Gaussian signal previously detected is indeed present in the 3-year data, although the significance of the detection is reduced. Using our most conservative method for constructing significance measures, we find the significance of the detection of non-Gaussianity drops from 98.3+/-0.4% to 94.9+/-0.7%; the significance drops from 99.3+/-0.3% to 97.2+/-0.5% using a method based on the $χ^2$ statistic. The wavelet analysis…
Many of the current anomalies reported in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 1-year data disappear after `correcting' for the best-fit embedded Bianchi type VII_h component (Jaffe et al. 2005), albeit assuming no dark energy component. We investigate the effect of this Bianchi correction on the detections of non-Gaussianity in the WMAP data that we previously made using directional spherical wavelets (McEwen et al. 2005a). As previously discovered by Jaffe et al. (2005), the deviations from Gaussianity in the kurtosis of spherical Mexican hat wavelet coefficients are eliminated on…
A directional spherical wavelet analysis is performed to examine the Gaussianity of the WMAP 1-year data. Such an analysis is facilitated by the introduction of a fast directional continuous spherical wavelet transform. The directional nature of the analysis allows one to probe orientated structure in the data. Significant deviations from Gaussianity are detected in the skewness and kurtosis of spherical elliptical Mexican hat and real Morlet wavelet coefficients for both the WMAP and Tegmark et al. (2003) foreground-removed maps. The previous non-Gaussianity detection made by Vielva et al. (2…
Using local morphological measures on the sphere defined through a steerable wavelet analysis, we examine the three-year WMAP and the NVSS data for correlation induced by the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect. The steerable wavelet constructed from the second derivative of a Gaussian allows one to define three local morphological measures, namely the signed-intensity, orientation and elongation of local features. Detections of correlation between the WMAP and NVSS data are made with each of these morphological measures. The most significant detection is obtained in the correlation of the sig…
We perform multi-scale non-Gaussianity detection and localization to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) first-year data in both wavelet and real spaces. Such an analysis is facilitated by spherical wavelet transform and inverse transform techniques developed by the YAWtb team. Skewness and kurtosis as test statistics are calculated on scales from about $1^{\circ}$ to $30^{\circ}$ on the sky as well as toward different directions using anisotropic spherical Morlet wavelet (SMW). A maximum deviation from Gaussian simulations with a right tail probability of $\sim 99.9%$ is detected …
A non-Gaussian detection in the WMAP 1-year data is reported. The detection has been found in the combined Q-V-W map proposed by the WMAP team (Komatsu et al. 2003) after applying a wavelet technique based on the Spherical Mexican Hat Wavelet (SMHW). The skewness and the kurtosis of the SMHW coefficients are calculated at different scales. A non-Gaussian signal is detected at scales of the SMHW around 4 deg (size in the sky of around 10 deg). The right tail probability of the detection is approx. 0.4%. In addition, a study of Gaussianity is performed in each hemisphere. The northern hemisphere…
Higher Criticism is a recently developed statistic for non-Gaussian detection, proposed in Donoho & Jin 2004. We find that Higher Criticism is useful for two purposes. First, Higher Criticism has competitive detection power, and non-Gaussianity is detected at the level 99% in the first year WMAP data. We find that the Higher Criticism value of WMAP is outside the 99% confidence region at a wavelet scale of 5 degrees (99.46% of Higher Criticism values based on simulated maps are below the values for WMAP). Second, Higher Criticism offers a way to locate a small portion of data that accounts for…
Motivated by the success of the Bianchi VII_h model in addressing many of the anomalies observed in the WMAP data (Jaffe et al.), we present calculations in real and in wavelet space of the Higher Criticism statistic of the Bianchi corrected Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) first year data. At the wavelet scale of 5 degrees the Higher Criticism of the WMAP map drops from a value above the 99% c.l. to a value below the 68% c.l. when corrected by the Bianchi template. An important property of the Higher Criticism statistic is its ability to locate the pixels that account for the devia…
The decomposition of a signal on the sphere with the steerable wavelet constructed from the second Gaussian derivative gives access to the orientation, signed-intensity, and elongation of the signal's local features. In the present work, the non-Gaussianity of the WMAP temperature data of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is analyzed in terms of the first four moments of the statistically isotropic random fields associated with these local morphological measures, at wavelet scales corresponding to angular sizes between 27.5 arcminutes and 30 degrees on the celestial sphere. While no detect…
We study the statistical properties of the 1st year WMAP data on different scales using the spherical mexican hat wavelet transform. Consistent with the results of Vielva et al. (2003) we find a deviation from Gaussianity in the form of kurtosis of wavelet coefficients on $3-4^\circ$ scales in the southern Galactic hemisphere. This paper extends the work of Vielva et al. as follows. We find that the non-Gaussian signal shows up more strongly in the form of a larger than expected number of cold pixels and also in the form of scale-scale correlations amongst wavelet coefficients. We establish th…
The non--Gaussian cold spot in the 1-year WMAP data, described in Vielva et al. and Cruz et al., is analysed in detail in the present paper. First of all, we perform a more rigorous calculation of the significance of the non-zero kurtosis detected in WMAP maps by Vielva et al. in wavelet space, mainly generated by the Spot. We confirm the robustness of that detection, since the probability of obtaining this deviation by chance is 0.69%. Afterwards, the morphology of the Spot is studied by applying Spherical Mexican Hat Wavelets with different ellipticities. The shape of the Spot is found to be…
The non-Gaussian cold spot detected in wavelet space in the WMAP 1-year data, is detected again in the coadded WMAP 3-year data at the same position (b = -57, l = 209) and size in the sky (around 10 degrees). The present analysis is based on several statistical methods: kurtosis, maximum absolute temperature, number of pixels below a given threshold, volume and Higher Criticism. All these methods detect deviations from Gaussianity in the 3--year data set at a slightly higher confidence level than in the WMAP 1-year data. These small differences are mainly due to the new foreground reduction te…
We estimate the power spectrum of SZ(Sunyaev-Zel'dovich)-effect-induced temperature fluctuations on sub-degree scales by using the cross correlation between the three-year WMAP maps and 2MASS galaxy distribution. We produced the SZ effect maps by hydrodynamic simulation samples of the $Λ$CDM model, and show that the SZ effect temperature fluctuations are highly non-Gaussian. The PDF of the temperature fluctuations has a long tail. More than 70% power of the SZ effect temperature fluctuations attributes to top $\sim 1%$ wavelet modes (long tail events). On the other hand, the CMB temperature fl…
Precise measurements of the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background enable us to do an accurate study on the form of the primordial power spectrum for a given set of cosmological parameters. In a previous paper (Shafieloo and Souradeep 2004), we implemented an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from the first year of WMAP data to determine the primordial power spectrum assuming a concordance cosmological model. This recovered spectrum has a likelihood far better than a scale invariant, or, `best fit' scale free spec…
Using a directional spherical wavelet analysis we detect the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, indicated by a positive correlation between the first-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data. Detections are made using both a directional extension of the spherical Mexican hat wavelet and the spherical butterfly wavelet. We examine the possibility of foreground contamination and systematics in the WMAP data and conclude that these factors are not responsible for the signal that we detect. The wavelet analysis inherently enables us to localise on the …
We present a new approach to foreground removal for Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps. Rather than relying on prior knowledge about the foreground components, we first extract the necessary information about them directly from the microwave sky maps by taking differences of temperature maps at different frequencies. These difference maps, which we refer to as internal templates, consist only of linear combinations of galactic foregrounds and noise, with no CMB component. We obtain the foreground cleaned maps by fitting these internal templates to, and subsequently subtracting the appropri…
We study the SZ-effect-induced non-Gaussianity in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuation maps. If a CMB map is contaminated by the SZ effect of galaxies or galaxy clusters, the CMB maps should have similar non-Gaussian features as the galaxy and cluster fields. Using the WMAP data and 2MASS galaxy catalog we show that the non-Gaussianity of the 2MASS galaxies is imprinted on WMAP maps. The signature of non-Gaussianity can be seen with the 4^{th} order cross correlation between the wavelet variables of the WMAP maps and 2MASS clusters. The intensity of the 4^{th} order non-Gaussian f…
We use the PSCz galaxy redshift catalogue combined with constrained simulations based on the IRAS 1.2 Jy galaxy density field to estimate the contribution of hot gas in the local universe to the SZ-effect on large scales. We produce a full sky Healpix map predicting the SZ-effect from clusters as well as diffuse hot gas within 80Mpc/h. Performing cross-correlation tests between this map and the WMAP data in pixel, harmonic and wavelet space we can put an upper limit on the effect. We conclude that the SZ effect from diffuse gas in the local universe cannot be detected in current CMB data and i…
Significant alignment and signed-intensity anomalies of local features of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) are detected on the three-year WMAP data, through a decomposition of the signal with steerable wavelets on the sphere. Firstly, an alignment analysis identifies two mean preferred planes in the sky, both with normal axes close to the CMB dipole axis. The first plane is defined by the directions toward which local CMB features are anomalously aligned. A mean preferred axis is also identified in this plane, located very close to the ecliptic poles axis. The second plane is defined by t…
We cross-correlate the new 3 year Wilkinson Microwave Anistropy Probe (WMAP3) cosmic microwave background (CMB) data with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) radio galaxy data, and find further evidence of late integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect taking place at late times in cosmic history. Our detection makes use of a novel statistical method based on a new construction of spherical wavelets, called needlets. The null hypothesis (no ISW) is excluded at more than 99.7% confidence. When we compare the measured cross-correlation with the theoretical predictions of standard, flat cosmological models …
We test the consistency of estimates of the non-linear coupling constant f_{NL} using non-Gaussian CMB maps generated by the method described in (Liguori, Matarrese and Moscardini 2003). This procedure to obtain non-Gaussian maps differs significantly from the method used in previous works on estimation of f_{NL}. Nevertheless, using spherical wavelets, we find results in very good agreement with (Mukherjee and Wang 2004), showing that the two ways of generating primordial non-Gaussian maps give equivalent results. Moreover, we introduce a new method for estimating the non-linear coupling cons…
The WMAP satellite has made available high quality maps of the sky in five frequency bands ranging from 22 to 94 GHz, with the main scientific objective of studying the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). These maps, however, contain a mixture of emissions from various astrophysical origins, superimposed on CMB emission. The objective of the present work is to make a high resolution CMB map in which contamination by such galactic and extra-galactic foregrounds, as well as by instrumental noise, is as low as possible. The method used is an implementation of a constrained line…
The extraction of cosmological parameters from microwave background observations relies on specific assumptions about the statistical properties of the data, in particular that the p-point distributions of temperature fluctuations are jointly-normal. Using a battery of statistical tests, we assess the multivariate Gaussian nature of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) 1st year data. The statistics we use fall into three classes which test different aspects of joint-normality: the first set assess the normality of marginal (one-point) distributions using familiar univariate methods;…
An extremely cold and big spot in the WMAP 1-year data is analyzed. Our work is a continuation of a previous paper (Vielva et al. 2004) where non-Gaussianity was detected, with a method based on the Spherical Mexican Hat Wavelet (SMHW) technique. We study the spots at different thresholds on the SMHW coefficient maps, considering six estimators, namely number of maxima, number of minima, number of hot and cold spots, and number of pixels of the spots. At SMHW scales around 4 degrees (10 degrees on the sky), the data deviate from Gaussianity. The analysis is performed on all sky, the northern a…
Reconstructing the shape of the primordial power spectrum in a model independent way from cosmological data is a useful consistency check on what is usually assumed regarding early universe physics. It is also our primary window to unknown physics during the inflationary era. Using a power-law form for the primordial power spectrum $P_{in}(k)$ and constraining the scalar spectral index and its running, \cite{Peiris03} found that the first year WMAP data seem to indicate a preferred scale in $P_{in}(k)$. We use two complementary methods: the wavelet band powers method of \cite{pia1}, and the to…
We report the first detection of the ISW effect in wavelet space, at scales in the sky around 7 degrees with a significance of around 3.3 sigma, by cross-correlating the WMAP first-year data and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). In addition, we present a detailed comparison among the capabilities of three different techniques for two different objectives: to detect the ISW and to put constraints in the nature of the dark energy. The three studied techniques are: the cross-angular power spectrum (CAPS, harmonic space), the correlation function (CCF, real space) and the covariance of the Spherical…
Using a directional spherical wavelet analysis we detect the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, indicated by a positive correlation between the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data, at the 3.9 sigma level. In a flat universe the detection of the ISW effect provides direct and independent evidence for dark energy. Moreover, we use our detection to constrain the dark energy density Omega_Lambda. We obtain estimates for Omega_Lambda consistent with other analysis techniques and data sets and rule out a zero cosmological constant at greater than 99% sig…
We cross-correlate the new 3 year Wilkinson Microwave Anistropy Probe (WMAP) cosmic microwave background (CMB) data with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) radio galaxy data, and find further evidence of late integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect taking place at late times in cosmic history. Our detection makes use of a novel statistical method \cite{Baldi et al. 2006a, Baldi et al. 2006b} based on a new construction of spherical wavelets, called needlets. The null hypothesis (no ISW) is excluded at more than 99.7% confidence. When we compare the measured cross-correlation with the theoretical predi…
In order to constrain and possibly detect unusual physics during inflation, we allow the power spectrum of primordial matter density fluctuations, P_{in}(k), to be an arbitrary function in the estimation of cosmological parameters from data. The multi-resolution and good localization properties of orthogonal wavelets make them suitable for detecting features in P_{in}(k). We expand P_{in}(k) directly in wavelet basis functions. The likelihood of the data is thus a function of the wavelet coefficients of P_{in}(k), as well as the H_0, Ω_b h^2, $Ω_c h^2 and the τ_{ri}, in a flat $Λ$CDM cosmology…
In this paper we implement an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from the WMAP 3 year data to determine the primordial power spectrum assuming different points in the cosmological parameter space for a flat LCDM cosmological model. We also present the preliminary results of the cosmological parameter estimation by assuming a free form of the primordial spectrum, for a reasonably large volume of the parameter space. The recovered spectrum for a considerably large number of the points in the cosmological parameter space has a…
