We analyze the physical conditions of the outflow seen in QSO 2359-1241 (NVSS J235953-124148), based on high resolution spectroscopic VLT observations. This object was previously studied using Keck/HIRES data. The main improvement over the HIRES results is our ability to accurately determine the number density of the outflow. For the major absorption component, level population from five different Fe II excited level yields n_H=10^4.4 cm^-3 with less than 20% scatter. We find that the Fe ii absorption arises from a region with roughly constant conditions and temperature greater than 9000 K, before the ionization front where temperature and electron density drop. Further, we model the observed spectra and investigate the effects of varying gas metalicities and the spectral energy distribution of the incident ionizing radiation field. The accurately measured column densities allow us to determine the ionization parameter log(U) = -2.4 and total column density of the outflow (log(N_H) = 20.6 cm^-2). Combined with the number density finding, these are stepping stones towards determining the mass flux and kinetic luminosity of the outflow, and therefore its importance to AGN feedback processes.
We briefly review the main results obtained in the field of QSO absorption line studies with the UVES high resolution spectrograph mounted on the Kueyen unit of the ESO Very Large Telescope (Paranal, Chile).
We report ESO-VLT near-infrared adaptive optics imaging of one radio-loud (PKS 0113-283) and two radio-quiet (Q 0045-3337 and Q 0101-337) QSOs at z > 2. In the first case, we are able to resolve the QSO and find that it is hosted by an elliptical of absolute magnitude M(K) = -27.6. For the other two objects, no extended emission has been unambiguously detected. This result, though restricted to a single object, extends up to z ~2.5 the finding that cosmic evolution of radio-loud QSO hosts follows the trend expected for luminous and massive spheroids undergoing passive evolution. For Q 0045-333…
UVES observations at ESO/VLT of the DLA at z=3.39 towards QSO 0000-2621 provided refined abundances for Fe, Si, N, Ni, and new abundances for O, Ar, P, Zn, Cr, H2. These determinations confirm that the system has remarkable properties with the lowest metallicity, a very low H2 molecular fraction and it has no detectable presence of dust. The [alpha/Fe-peak] ratio is ~ 0.1 challenging current models of chemical evolution. The O/Ar and O/S ratios are the same as those observed in BCGs, suggesting a universal IMF.
The host galaxies of six nearby QSOs are studied on the basis of high resolution HST optical images and spatially resolved VLT slit spectra. The gas ionization and velocity are mapped as a function of the distance to the central QSO. In the majority of the cases, the QSO significantly contributes to the gas ionization in its whole host galaxy, and sometimes even outside. Reflection or scattering of the QSO \ha line from remote regions of the galaxy is detected in several instances. The line shifts show that, in all cases, the matter responsible for the light reflection moves away from the QSO,…
We report on high-resolution observations ($\Re \simeq 45000$) of the Hubble Deep Field South QSO J2233-606 obtained with the VLT UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES). We present spectral data for the wavelength region $3050 < λ< 10000$ Å. The $S/N$ ratio of the final spectrum is about 50 per resolution element at 4000 Å, 90 at 5000 Å, 80 at 6000 Å, 40 at 8000 Å. Redshifts, column densities and Doppler widths of the absorption features have been determined with Voigt-profile fitting. A total of 621 lines have been measured. In particular 270 Ly-alpha lines, 41 Ly-beta and 24 systems containin…
A study of outflow (OF) and BAL systems in Mrk 231 (and in similar IR QSOs) is presented. This study is based mainly on 1D and 2D spectroscopy (obtained at La Palma/WHT, HST, IUE, ESO/NTT, KPNO, APO and CASLEO observatories) plus HST images. For Mrk 231 we report evidence that the extreme nuclear OF process has at least 3 main components, which are probably associated with: (i) the radio jet, at pc scale, and (ii(the extreme starburst at pc and kpc scale. This OF has generate 4 or more concentric expanding bubbles and the BAL systems. The variability of the short lived BAL-III system was studi…
We present high resolution spectroscopic VLT observations of the outflow seen in QSO 2359-1241. These data contain absorption troughs from five resonance Fe II lines with a resolution of ~7 km/s and signal-to-noise ratio per resolution element of order 100. We use this unprecedented high quality data set to investigate the physical distribution of the material in front of the source, and by that determine the column densities of the absorbed troughs. We find that the apparent optical depth model gives a very poor fit to the data and greatly underestimates the column density measurements. Power…
An XMM-Newton observation of the bright QSO PG1211+143 in 2001 revealed a blue-shifted absorption line spectrum indicative of a high velocity radial outflow of highly ionised gas. Unless highly collimated, the outflow mass rate was shown to be comparable to the accretion rate, with mechanical energy a significant fraction of the bolometric luminosity. Analysis of the full XMM-Newton data set now allows the wider effects of that energetic outflow to be explored. We find that absorption and re-emission of the primary continuum flux in the ionised outflow, together with a second, less strongly ab…
We assess the cosmological variability of the fine-structure constant from the analysis of an ensemble of Fe II absorption lines at the redshift z=1.15 toward the QSO HE 0515-4414 by means of the standard many-multiplet (MM) technique and its revision based on linear regression (RMM). This is the first time the MM technique is applied to exceptional high-resolution and high signal-to-noise QSO spectra recorded with the UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). Our analysis results in the most stringent bounds hitherto infered from QSO absorption lines. Our re…
We present a detailed analysis of the intrinsic UV absorption in the central HDFS target QSO J2233-606, based on a high-resolution, high S/N (~25 -- 50) spectrum obtained with VLT/UVES. This spectrum samples the cluster of intrinsic absorption systems outflowing from the AGN at radial velocities v ~ -5000 -- -3800 km/s in the key far-UV diagnostic lines - the lithium-like CNO doublets and H I Lyman series. We fit the absorption troughs using a global model of all detected lines to solve for the independent velocity-dependent covering factors of the continuum and emission-line sources and ionic…
Spectral absorption features in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have traditionally been attributed to outflowing photoionized gas located at a distance of order a parsec from the central continuum source. However, recent observations of QSO FIRST J104459.6+365605 by de Kool and coworkers, when intepreted in the context of a single-phase gas model, imply that the absorption occurs much farther (approx 700 pc) from the center. We reinterpret these observations in terms of a shielded, multiphase gas, which we represent as a continuous low-density wind with embedded high-density clouds. Our model sa…
The measurement of $Δα/α$ from the QSO absorption lines of Fe_II taken at two different redshifts (Quast et al, Levshakov et al) is compared with the result based on the 23 data points also obtained from VLT/UVES (Chand et al), to demonstrate that the apparent oscillatory time-dependence fitting the latter taken at face value is reinforced by the former claimed to be of much better accuracy.
Polarization is a useful probe to investigate the geometries and dynamics of outflow in BAL QSOs. We perform a Monte-Carlo simulation to calculate the polarization produced by resonant and electron scattering in BALR. We find: 1)A rotated and funnel-shaped outflow is preferred to explain many observed polarization features. 2)The resonant scattering can contribute a significant part of NV emission line in some QSOs.
This paper presents an analysis of a Keck HIRES spectrum of the QSO FIRST J104459.6+365605. The line of sight towards the QSO contains two clusters of outflowing clouds that give rise to broad blue shifted absorption lines. The outflow velocities of the clouds range from -200 to -1200 km/s and from -3400 to -5200 km/s, respectively. The width of the individual absorption lines ranges from 50 to more than 1000 km/s. The most prominent absorption lines are those of Mg II, Mg I, and Fe II. The low ionization absorption lines occur at the same velocities as the most saturated Mg II lines, showing …
The new result on the QSO absorption lines from VLT-UVES sample is compared with the past reports on the time-variability of the fine-structure "constant" derived from the Keck/HIRES observation, on the basis of an oscillatory behavior of the scalar field supposed to be responsible for the cosmological acceleration.
We report on the analysis of a short XMM-Newton observation of the reddened Type 1 QSO 2MASS 234449+1221 first identified in the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. The underlying X-ray continuum is found to be typical of a broad-line active galaxy, with photon index Gamma ~ 1.9. Low energy absorption can be modelled by a column N_H ~ 10^22 cm^{-2} of moderately ionised gas or a smaller column of cold gas. Addition of a soft X-ray emission component significantly improves the fit in both cases. With the assumption that the soft X-ray flux represents emission from gas photoionised by the incident X-ray …
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 3 (SDSS DR3) we investigate how narrow (<700km/s) CIV and MgII quasar absorption line systems are distributed around quasars. The CIV absorbers lie in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4 and the MgII absorbers in the range 0.4<z<2.2. By correlating absorbers with quasars on different but neighbouring lines-of-sight, we measure the clustering of absorbers around quasars on comoving scales between 4 and 30Mpc. The observed comoving correlation lengths are r_o~5h^-1Mpc, similar to those observed for bright galaxies at these redshifts. Comparing…
Correlations between BAL QSO intrinsic properties and polarization have been searched for. Some results are summarized here, providing possible constraints on BAL outflow models.
The existence of BAL outflows in only radio-quiet QSOs was thought to be an important clue to mass ejection and the radio-loud - radio-quiet dichotomy. Recently a few radio-loud BAL QSOs have been discovered at high redshift. We present evidence that PKS 1004+13 is a radio-loud BAL QSO. It would be the first known at low-redshift (z = 0.24), and one of the most radio luminous. For PKS 1004+13, there appear to be broad absorption troughs of O VI, N V, Si IV, and C IV, indicating high-ionization outflows up to about 10,000 km/s. There are also two strong, broad (~500 km/s), high-ionization, asso…
We present the analysis of two BALs seen in the spectrum of the QSO SDSS J160501.21-011220.0. Our UVES spectrum shows two well detached BALs at z(abs)= 4.685 and 4.855. The system at z(abs)= 4.855 covers the background source completely suggesting that the gas is located outside the BLR. On the contrary the system at z(abs)= 4.685 has a covering factor of ~0.9. The observed H I absorption line together with the limits on C II and Si II absorptions suggest that 16<log N(H I) (cm^{-2})<~17 in z(abs) = 4.855 absorption system. Comparison with models show that the observed column densities of N V,…
We compile a large sample of broad absorption lines (BAL) quasars with X-ray observations from the \xmm archive data and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5. The sample consists of 41 BAL QSOs. Among 26 BAL quasars detected in X-ray, spectral analysis is possible for twelve objects. X-ray absorption is detected in all of them. Complementary to that of \citet{gall06} (thereafter G06), our sample spans wide ranges of both BALnicity Index (BI) and maximum outflow velocity (\vmax). Combining our sample with G06's, we find very significant correlations between the intrinsic X-ray weakness with …
We have selected a sample of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars which show significant radio variations, indicating the presence of polar BAL outflows. We obtained snapshot XMM observations of four polar BAL QSOs, to check whether strong X-ray absorption, one of the most prominent characteristics of most BAL QSOs, also exist in polar outflows. Two of the sources are detected in X-ray. Spectral fittings show that they are X-ray normal with no intrinsic X-ray absorption, suggesting the X-ray shielding gas might be absent in polar BAL outflows. Comparing to non-BAL QSOs, one of two X-ray nondete…
We present a catalog of 5039 broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (QSOs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5) QSO catalog that have absorption troughs covering a continuous velocity range >= 2000 km/s. We have fit ultraviolet (UV) continua and line emission in each case, enabling us to report common diagnostics of BAL strengths and velocities in the range -25,000 to 0 km/s for SiIV $λ$1400, CIV $λ$1549, AlIII $λ$1857, and MgII $λ$2799. We calculate these diagnostics using the spectrum listed in the DR5 QSO catalog, and also for spectra from additional SDSS observing epoch…
We present the calculations of steady, spherical gas outflows from galaxies in an effort to understand the effects of the galaxy mass on the flow properties such as the size of the outflow regions, the efficiency of radiative cooling, and the fate of the cooled gas. We show that there exist no transonic flows but either subsonic or supersonic flows are obtainable, in an analogy with the stellar wind or accretion problems. Solutions of the supersonic outflows are studied in detail as they are most likely to carry gas to large distances away from galaxies. In case the gas does cool radiatively, …
Several studies have shown that the column densities inferred from broad absorption lines (BALs) require extremely high metallicities and phosphorus overabundances -- apparently in conflict with other abundance diagnostics. Here I use HST spectroscopy of the BALQSO PG 1254+047 to argue that the BALs abundance estimates are incorrect, because partial line-of-sight coverage of the continuum source(s) has led to gross underestimates of the line optical depths and column densities. I claim that the significant presence of PV 1118,1128 absorption in this and other BALQSOs identifies the saturated a…
We will present first results of ESO-VLT AO-assisted integral-field spectroscopy of a sample of X-ray bright AGN with redshifts of 0.04 < z < 1. We constructed this sample by cross-correlating the SDSS and ROSAT surveys and utilizing typical AO constraints. This sample allows for a detailed study of the NIR properties of the nuclear and host environments with high spectral resolution on the 100 pc scale. These objects can then be compared directly to the local (z<0.01) galaxy populations (observed without AO) at the same linear scale. As a current example, we will present observations of the z…
Using the Uves echelle spectrograph at the ESO VLT, we observed the absorption line spectrum of the QSO 0103-260 in the Fors Deep Field. In addition to the expected Ly-alpha forest lines, we detected at least 16 metal absorption systems with highly different ionization levels in the observed spectral range. The redshifts of the metal absorption systems are strongly correlated with the redshift distribution of the high-z galaxies in the Fors Deep Field and with the strength (but not the number density) of the Ly-alpha forest lines. Both the metal systems and the galaxies show clustering at leas…
We investigate the 3-D matter distribution at z~2 with high resolution (R ~ 40000) spectra of QSO pairs and groups obtained with the UVES spectrograph at ESO VLT. Our sample is unique for the number density of objects and the variety of separations, between 0.5 and 7 proper Mpc. We compute the real space cross-correlation function of the Lyman-alpha forest transmitted fluxes. There is a significant clustering signal up to ~2 proper Mpc, which is still present when absorption lines with high column density (log N > 13.8) are excluded.
A sample of 8 QSOs with 1.7 < z_em < 3.7 has been observed with VLT/UVES at a typical resolution 45000 and S/N~40-50. Thanks to the two-arm design of the spectrograph, a remarkable efficiency has been achieved below 400nm and above 800nm, which translates immediately in the possibility of obtaining new results, especially at z<2.5. We report here new insight gained about the evolution of the number density of Ly-a lines, their column density distribution, the ionizing UV background and the cosmic baryon density.
In this paper we present new near infrared (NIR) imaging and spectroscopic data of the quasar 3C 48 and its host galaxy. The data were obtained with the ESO-VLT camera ISAAC.We report the first detection of the apparent second nucleus 3C 48A about 100NE of the bright QSO nucleus in the NIR bands J, H, and Ks. 3C 48A is highly reddened with respect to the host, which could be due to warm dust, heated by enhanced star formation or by interstellar material intercepting the radio jet. In fact, all colors on the host galaxy are reddened by several magnitudes of visual extinction. Imaging and initia…
We study high-resolution spectra of the `overlapping-trough' low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasar SDSS J030000.56+004828.0. The CaII, MgII and MgI column densities in this object are the largest reported to date for any BAL outflow. The broad CaII absorption is mildly blended, but the blending can be disentangled to measure the CaII column density, which is large enough that the outflow must include a strong hydrogen ionization front. The outflow begins at a blueshift of ~1650 km/s from the systemic redshift. The lowest velocity BAL region produces strong CaII absorption but doe…
Low-ionization transitions such as the MgII 2796/2803 doublet trace cold gas in the vicinity of galaxies. It is not clear whether this gas is part of the interstellar medium of large proto-disks, part of dwarfs, or part of entrained material in supernovae-driven outflows. Studies based on MgII statistics, e.g. stacked images and clustering analysis, have invoked starburst-driven outflows where MgII absorbers are tracing the denser and colder gas of the outflow. A consequence of the outflow scenario is that the strongest absorbers ought to be associated with starbursts. We use the near-IR integ…
Among the unusual broad absorption line quasars being found by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are objects with much stronger absorption in Fe III than Fe II. These unusual line ratios require a high density in the outflow (n_H >= 3 x 10^{10} cm^{-3}). They should also appear for only a limited range of outflow column densities, which explains their rarity. Previously we suggested that the Fe III line ratios were also affected by a resonance; we now believe this is an artifact of structure in the underlying Fe II + Fe III pseudocontinuum. The SDSS is also discovering objects with absorptio…
Precise radial velocity measurements (delta v/c ~ 10^{-7}) of FeII lines in damped Ly-alpha systems from very high quality VLT/UVES spectra of quasars HE0515-4414 and Q1101-264 are used to probe cosmological time dependence of the fine structure constant, alpha. It is found that between two redshifts z1 = 1.15 and z2 = 1.84 the value of Delta alpha/alpha changes at the level of a few ppm: (alpha_z2 - alpha_z1)/alpha_0 = 5.43 +/- 2.52 ppm. Variations of alpha can be considered as one of the most reliable method to constrain the dark energy equation of state and improvements on the accuracy of t…
Interest in the quasar HE0450-2958 arose following the publication of the non-detection of its expected massive host, leading to various interpretations. This article investigates the gaseous and stellar contents of the system through additional VLT/FORS slit spectra and integral field spectroscopy from VLT/VIMOS. We apply our MCS deconvolution algorithm on slit spectra for the separation of the QSO and diffuse components, and develop a new method to remove the point sources in Integral Field Spectra, allowing extraction of velocity maps, narrow-line images, spatially resolved spectra or ioniz…
We report the discovery of a bright quasar (E=15.8, z=0.868) associated with the flat spectrum radio source NVSS J235953-124148. This quasar we designate QSO 2359-1241 possesses a rare combination of extreme properties that make it of special interest. These properties include: intrinsic high-velocity outflow seen in absorption for both high and low-ionization species, high optical polarization (about 5%), significant radio emission, and dust reddening. The dereddened absolute magnitude of QSO 2359-1241 places it among the three most optically luminous quasars known at z<1. High-resolution spe…
Prochter et al. 2006 recently found that the number density of strong intervening 0.5<z<2 MgII absorbers detected in gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow spectra is nearly 4 times larger than in QSO spectra. We have conducted a similar study using CIV absorbers. Our CIV sample, consisting of a total of 20 systems, is drawn from 3 high resolution and high to moderate S/N VLT/UVES spectra of 3 long-duration GRB afterglows, covering the redshift interval 1.6< z<3.1. The column density distribution and number density of this sample do not show any statistical difference with the same quantities measure…
We present detailed analyses of the absorption spectrum seen in QSO 2359-1241 (NVSS J235953-124148). Keck HIRES data reveal absorption from twenty transitions arising from: He I, Mg I, Mg II, Ca II, and Fe II. HST data show broad absorption lines (BALs) from Al III 1857, C IV 1549, Si IV 1397, and N V 1240. Absorption from excited Fe II states constrains the temperature of the absorber to 2000K < T < 10,000K and puts a lower limit of 10^5 cm^{-3} on the electron number density. Saturation diagnostics show that the real column densities of He I and Fe II can be determined, allowing to derive me…
We report on the analysis of a BeppoSAX observation of IRAS 13197-1627. The complexity of the broad band (0.3-100 keV) spectrum of the source prevents us from selecting from two possible best-fit models, i.e. one based on a partial covering and the other on a reflection dominated scenario. Whatever the best fit model, the data imply that: 1) the primary spectrum is heavily obscured by at least two absorbers with column densities of the order of 5x10^23 cm-2 and >2x10^24 cm-2; 2) the intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of the source is at least \~2x10^44 erg/s thus making IRAS 13197-1627 a type-II QS…
The high redshift galaxy MS1512-cB58 (z=2.724, m_V=20.64) has been observed with the very efficient high resolution echelle spectrograph VLT/UVES. Although this is a very challenging observational program for a Southern hemisphere telescope (the galaxy is located at +36 deg declination), high resolution spectra (FWHM ~ 26 km/s) have revealed, with unprecedented detail along a galaxy sight line, the Lyman-alpha forest due to intervening clouds in the intergalactic medium (IGM). The mean depression D_A due to IGM absorption blueward of the galaxy Ly-alpha wavelength and the number density dn/dz …
We present spectroscopic observations obtained with the FORS1 instrument on the ESO VLT under good seeing conditions of the radio-quiet z_em = 3.04 quasar Q1205-30 and its associated extended Lyman-alpha emission. The extended Lyman-alpha emission was originally found in a deep narrow band image targeting a z_abs = z_em Lyman-limit system in the spectrum of the QSO. Using spectral point-spread function fitting to subtract the QSO spectrum, we clearly detect the extended Lyman-alpha emission as well as two foreground galaxies at small impact parameters (2.12 +- 0.04 and 2.77 +- 0.07 arcsec). Th…
