In a continuing survey of active galactic nuclei observed by the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, we provide a deeper analysis of intrinsic absorption features found in 35 objects. Our survey is for low-redshift and moderate-luminosity objects, mostly Seyfert galaxies. We find a strong correlation between maximum radial velocity and luminosity. We also examine the relationships between equivalent width (EW), full width at half maximum, velocity: and continuum flux. The correlation between velocity and luminosity has been explored previously by Laor & Brandt, but at a significantly higher redshift and heavily weighted by broad absorption line quasars. We also have examined each object with multiple observations for variability in each of the aforementioned quantities, and have characterized the variation of EW with the continuum flux. In our survey, we find that variability of O VI lambda1032, lambda1038 is less common than of the UV doublets of CIV and N V seen at longer wavelengths, because the O VI absorption is usually saturated. Lyman beta absorption variability is more frequent. In a target-by-target examination we find that broad absorption line absorption and narrow absorption line absorbers are related in terms of maximum outflow velocity and luminosity, and both can be exhibited in similar luminosity objects. We also find one object that shows radial velocity change, seven objects that show equivalent width variability, and two objects that show either transverse velocity changes or a change in ionization.
We present a synthetic spectral analysis of nearly the entire far ultraviolet International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archive of spectra of dwarf novae in or near outburst. The study includes 46 systems of all dwarf nova subtypes both above and below the period gap. The spectra were uniformly analyzed using synthetic spectral codes for optically thick accretion disks and stellar photospheres along with the best-available distance measurements or estimates. We present newly estimated accretion rates and discuss the implications of our study for disk accretion physics and CV evolution.
An atlas of far-ultraviolet spectra of 45 Galactic OB stars observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer is presented. The atlas covers the wavelength region between 912 and 1185A with an effective spectral resolution of 0.12A. Systematic trends in the morphology and strength of stellar features are discussed. Particular attention is drawn to the variations of the CIII$λ$1176, SIV$λλ$1063, 1073, and PV$λλ$1118, 1128 line profiles as a function of temperature and luminosity class; and the lack of a luminosity dependence associated with OVI$λλ$1032, 1038. Numerous interstellar lines …
Diffuse far-ultraviolet stellar emission scattered by dust grains has been observed in a region near the Orion Nebula. In addition to the scattered stellar continuum, emission and absorption features produced by molecular hydrogen have been identified. In this Letter, we present an analysis of this absorption and fluorescent emission from molecular hydrogen in Orion. We model the spectra obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer using optical depth templates and a fluorescent emission code. These results are surprising because previous studies have found little ultraviolet absor…
We present a survey of OVI 1032 emission in the Milky Way using data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite. The observations span the period from launch in 1999 to July 2003. Our survey contains 112 sight lines, 23 of which show measurable OVI 1032 emission. The OVI 1032 emission feature was detected at all latitudes and exhibits intensities of 1900-8600 photons/s/cm^2/sr. Combined with values from the literature, these emission measurements are consistent with the picture derived from recent OVI absorption surveys: high-latitude sight lines probe OVI-emitting gas in…
We present an analysis of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer ({\it{FUSE}}) spectra of the little-known southern nova-like BB Doradus. The spectrum was obtained as part of our Cycle 8 {\it FUSE} survey of high declination nova-like stars. The FUSE spectrum of BB Dor, observed in a high state, is modeled with an accretion disk with a very low inclination (possibly lower than 10deg). Assuming an average WD mass of 0.8 solar leads to a mass accretion rate of 1.E-9 Solar mass/year and a distance of the order of 650 pc, consistent with the extremely low galactic reddening in its direction. T…
Since its launch in 1999, the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has made over 4600 observations of some 2500 individual targets. The data are reduced by the Principal Investigator team at the Johns Hopkins University and archived at the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST). The data-reduction software package, called CalFUSE, has evolved considerably over the lifetime of the mission. The entire FUSE data set has recently been reprocessed with CalFUSE v3.2, the latest version of this software. This paper describes CalFUSE v3.2, the instrument calibrations upon which it is …
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite observes light in the far-ultraviolet spectral region, 905 - 1187 A with high spectral resolution. The instrument consists of four coaligned prime-focus telescopes and Rowland spectrographs with microchannel plate detectors. Two of the telescope channels use Al:LiF coatings for optimum reflectivity from approximately 1000 to 1187 A and the other two use SiC coatings for optimized throughput between 905 and 1105 A. The gratings are holographically ruled to largely correct for astigmatism and to minimize scattered light. The microchannel plate…
We present the first far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable VV Puppis, obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite. In addition, we have obtained simultaneous ground-based optical photometric observations of VV Pup during part of the FUV observation. The shapes of the FUV and optical light curves are consistent with each other and with those of past observations at optical, extreme-ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths. Time-resolved FUV spectra during the portion of VV Pup's orbit when the accreting magnetic pole of the white dwarf can be s…
We present an analysis of the first far-ultraviolet observations of the SW Sextantis-type cataclysmic variable DW Ursae Majoris, obtained in November 2001 with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The time-averaged spectrum of DW UMa shows a rich assortment of emission lines (plus some contamination from interstellar absorption lines including molecular hydrogen). Accretion disk model spectra do not provide an adequate fit to the far-ultraviolet spectrum of DW UMa. We constructed a light curve by summing far-ultraviolet spectra extracted in 60-sec bins; this shows a modulation on the or…
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) is a NASA astronomy mission that will explore the 905-1187 A wavelength region at high spectral resolution. Funded by NASA's Explorer Program, this Origins mission is scheduled for a 1999 launch and at least three years of operations. The development of FUSE is being led by the Johns Hopkins University, with major contributions to the program from the University of Colorado, the University of California-Berkeley, the space agencies of Canada and France, and corporate partners. FUSE will have approximately 10,000 times the sensitivity of its pio…
We present new Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of Mira A's wind-accreting companion star, Mira B. We find that the strongest lines in the FUSE spectrum are H2 lines fluoresced by H I Lyman-alpha. A previously analyzed Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectrum also shows numerous Lyman-alpha fluoresced H2 lines. The HST lines are all Lyman band lines, while the FUSE H2 lines are mostly Werner band lines, many of them never before identified in an astrophysical spectrum. We combine the FUSE and HST data to refine estimates of the physical properties of the emitting H2 gas.…
Launch of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has been followed by an extensive period of calibration and characterization as part of the preparation for normal satellite operations. Major tasks carried out during this period include initial coalignment, focusing and characterization of the four instrument channels, and a preliminary measurement of the resolution and throughput performance of the instrument. We describe the results from this test program, and present preliminary estimates of the on-orbit performance of the FUSE satellite based on a combination of this data and pr…
We report the progress to date from an ongoing unbiased ultraviolet survey of supernova remnants in the Magellanic Clouds using the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite. This survey is obtaining spectra of a random large sample of Magellanic Cloud supernova remnants with a broad range of radio, optical, and X-ray properties. To date, 39 objects have been observed in the survey (38 in the LMC and one in the SMC) and 15 have been detected, a detection rate of nearly 40%. Our survey has nearly tripled the number of UV-detected SNRs in the Magellanic Clouds (from 8 to 22). Becau…
Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations are presented for WD0621-376, a DA white dwarf star in the local interstellar medium (LISM) at a distance of about 78 pc. The data have a signal-to-noise ratio of about 20-40 per 20 km/s resolution element and cover the wavelength range 905-1187 Å. LISM absorption is detected in the lines of D I, C II, C II*, C III, N I, N II, N III, O I, Ar I, and Fe II. This sight line is partially ionized, with an ionized nitrogen fraction of > 0.23. We determine the ratio $D/O = (3.9 \pm ^{1.3}_{1.0})\times 10^{-2}$ (2$σ$). Assuming a standard interstella…
We use Far Ultraviolet Spectrocopic Explorer (FUSE) observations to study interstellar absorption along the line of sight to the white dwarf WD1634-573 (d=37.1+/-2.6 pc). Combining our measurement of D I with a measurement of H I from Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer data, we find a D/H ratio toward WD1634-573 of D/H=(1.6+/-0.5)e-5. In contrast, multiplying our measurements of D I/O I=0.035+/-0.006 and D I/N I=0.27+/-0.05 with published mean Galactic ISM gas phase O/H and N/H ratios yields D/H(O)=(1.2+/-0.2)e-5 and D/H(N)=(2.0+/-0.4)e-5, respectively. Note that all uncertainties quoted above are 2…
We present a survey of 72 Seyfert galaxies and quasars observed by the it Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We have determined that 72 of 253 available active galactic nuclei (AGN) targets are viable targets for detection of intrinsic absorption lines. We examined these spectra for signs of intrinsic absorption in the O VI doublet (lambda 1031.9, 1037.6) and Lyman beta (lambda 1025.7). The fraction of Seyfert 1 galaxies and low-redshift quasars at z < 0.15 that show evidence of intrinsic UV absorption is ~50%, which is slightly lower than Crenshaw et al. (1999) found (60%) based o…
We present a deuterium abundance analysis of the line of sight toward the white dwarf WD2211-495 observed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Numerous interstellar lines are detected on the continuum of the stellar spectrum. A thorough analysis was performed through the simultaneous fit of interstellar absorption lines detected in the four FUSE channels of multiple observations with different slits. We excluded all saturated lines in order to reduce possible systematic errors on the column density measurements. We report the determination of the average interstellar D/O and…
The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) has surveyed a large sample (> 100) of active galactic nuclei in the low-redshift universe (z < 1). Its response at short wavelengths makes it possible to measure directly the far ultraviolet spectral properties of quasistellar objects (QSOs) and Seyfert 1 galaxies at z < 0.3. Using archival FUSE spectra, we form a composite extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of QSOs at z < 0.67. After consideration of many possible sources of systematic error in our analysis, we find that the spectral slope of the FUSE composite spectrum, α= -0.56^+0.38_-0.28 …
We present far-ultraviolet spectra of the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained in 2000 June with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Our data span the observed wavelength range 915--1185 Angstroms at a resolution of 20 km/s. The spectrum shows a weak continuum and emission from O VI, C III, and He II. The FUSE data were obtained when the AGN was in a low state, which has revealed strong, narrow O VI emission lines. We also resolve intrinsic, associated absorption lines of O VI and the Lyman series. Several distinct kinematic components are present, spanning a velocity range of 0…
We present measurements of the column densities of interstellar DI and OI made with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), and of HI made with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) toward the sdOB star Feige 110 [(l,b) = (74.09, -59.07); d = 179 +265 -67 pc; z = -154 +57 -227 pc]. Our determination of the DI column density made use of curve of growth fitting and profile fitting analyses, while our OI column density determination used only curve of growth techniques. The HI column density was estimated by fitting the damping wings of the interstellar Ly alpha profile. We find…
We present three Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC4051. The most prominent features in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum are the OVI emission and absorption lines and the HI Lyman series absorption lines which are detected up to the Lyman edge. We also identify weak emission from NIII, CIII, and HeII. The CIII line shows absorption while none is detected in the NIII and HeII lines. In HI and CIII we detect two main absorption systems at outflow velocities of -50+/-30 and -240+/-40 km/s, as well as a possible third one at ~ -450 …
The Deep Survey instrument on the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer satellite (EUVE) obtained long, nearly continuous soft X-ray light curves of 5-33 days duration for 14 Seyfert galaxies and QSOs. We present a uniform reduction of these data, which account for a total of 231 days of observation. Several of these light curves are well suited to a search for periodicity or QPOs in the range of hours to days that might be expected from dynamical processes in the inner accretion disk around ~10^8 M_sun black holes. Light curves and periodograms of the three longest observations show features that coul…
We report on the properties of a sample of ultraviolet luminous galaxies (UVLGs) selected by matching the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) Surveys with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Third Data Release. Out of 25362 galaxies between 0.0<z<0.3 detected by GALEX, there are 215 galaxies with L>2x10^10 L_solar at 1530 Angstroms (observed wavelength). The properties of this population are well correlated with ultraviolet surface brightness. We find that the galaxies with low UV surface brightness are primarily large spiral systems with a mixture of old and young stellar populations, while the high s…
High resolution far-ultraviolet spectra of the O-type subdwarf BD +28 4211 were obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to measure the interstellar deuterium, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances in this direction. The interstellar D I transitions are analyzed down to Lyman iota at 920.7 A. The star was observed several times at different target offsets in the direction of spectral dispersion. The aligned and coadded spectra have high signal-to-noise ratios (S/N =50-100). D I, N I, and O I transitions were analyzed with curve-of-growth and profile fitting techniques. A model…
We have carried out an investigation of the abundance of deuterium along two extended sight lines through the interstellar medium (ISM) of the Galactic disk. The data include Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of HD 195965 (B1Ib) and HD 191877 (B0V), as well as Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) observations of HD 195965. The distances to HD 195965 and HD 191877, derived from spectroscopic parallax, are 794+/-200 pc and 2200+/-550 pc, respectively, making these the longest Galactic disk sight lines in which deuterium has been investigated with FUSE. The higher …
We report a Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer satellite observation of the supernova remnant N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, covering the 905 -- 1187 A spectral region. A 30'' square aperture was used, resulting in a velocity resolution of ~100 km/s. The purpose of the observation was to examine several bright emission lines expected from earlier work and to demonstrate diffuse source sensitivity by searching for faint lines never seen previously in extragalactic supernova remnant UV spectra. Both goals were accomplished. Strong emission lines of O VI 1031.9 A, 1037.6 A and C III 977.0…
The neutral hydrogen and the ionized helium absorption in the spectra of quasars are unique probes of structure in the early universe. We present Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations of the line of sight to the quasar HE2347-4342 in the 1000-1187 A band at a resolving power of 15,000. We resolve the He II Ly alpha absorption as a discrete forest of absorption lines in the redshift range 2.3 to 2.7. About 50 percent of these features have H I counterparts with column densities log N(HI) > 12.3 that account for most of the observed opacity in He II Ly alpha. The He II to H I colum…
We give an overview of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Explorer Mission launched on April 28, 2003. GALEX is performing the first space UV sky-survey, including imaging and grism surveys in two bands (1350-1750 Angstroms and 1750-2750 Angstroms). The surveys include an all-sky imaging survey (m[AB] ~ 20.5), a medium imaging survey of 1000 square degrees (m[AB] ~ 23), a deep imaging survey of 100 square degrees (m[AB] ~ 25), and a nearby galaxy survey. Spectroscopic grism surveys (R=100-200) are underway with various depths and sky coverage. Many targets overlap existing or planne…
The X-ray bright z=0.116 quasar PKS 2155-304 is frequently observed as a Chandra calibration source, with a total of 483 ksec of Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) exposure time accumulated through May 2006. Highly-ionized metal absorption lines, including numerous lines at z=0 and a putative OVIII K-alpha line at z=0.055, have been reported in past Chandra studies of this source. Using all available Chandra LETG spectra and analysis techniques developed for such z=0 X-ray absorption along other sightlines, we revisit these previous detections. We detect 4 absorption lines at >3σsignifican…
We report a detection of far ultraviolet absorption from the supernova remnant SNR 0057 - 7226 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The absorption is seen in the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spectrum of the LBV/WR star HD 5980. Absorption from O VI 1032 and C III 977 is seen at a velocity of +300 km/s with respect to the Galactic absorption lines, +170 km/s with respect to the SMC absorption. The O VI 1038 line is contaminated by H_2 absorption, but is present. These lines are not seen in the FUSE spectrum of Sk80, only ~1' (~17 pc) away from HD 5980. No blue-shifted O VI 1032…
We present a survey of coronal forbidden lines detected in Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spectra of nearby stars. Two strong coronal features, Fe XVIII 974 A and Fe XIX 1118 A, are observed in 10 of the 26 stars in our sample. Various other coronal forbidden lines, observed in solar flares, also were sought but not detected. The Fe XVIII feature, formed at log T (K) = 6.8, appears to be free of blends, whereas the Fe XIX line can be corrupted by a C I multiplet. FUSE observations of these forbidden iron lines at spectral resolution R ~ 15,000 provides the opportunity to study d…
High-resolution spectra of the hot white dwarf G191-B2B, covering the wavelength region 905-1187A, were obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). This data was used in conjunction with existing high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope STIS observations to evaluate the total HI, DI, OI and NI column densities along the line of sight. Previous determinations of N(DI) based upon GHRS and STIS observations were controversial due to the saturated strength of the DI Lyman-alpha line. In the present analysis the column density of DI has been measured using only the unsaturated Ly…
We present FUSE spectroscopy of SBS 0335-052, the second most metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy known (log O/H = -4.70). In addition to the H I Lyman series, we detect C II, N I, N II, O I, Si II, Ar I and Fe II absorption lines, mainly arising from the extended H I envelope in which SBS 0335-052 is embedded. No H2 absorption lines are seen. The absence of diffuse H2 implies that the warm H2 detected through infrared emission must be very clumpy and associated with the star-forming regions. The clumps should be denser than ~ 1000 cm^-3 and hotter than ~ 1000 K and account for > 5%…
To probe the distribution and physical characteristics of interstellar gas at temperatures T ~ 3e5 K in the disk of the Milky Way, we have used the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to observe absorption lines of OVI toward 148 early-type stars situated at distances 1 kpc. After subtracting off a mild excess of OVI arising from the Local Bubble, combining our new results with earlier surveys of OVI, and eliminating stars that show conspicuous localized X-ray emission, we find an average OVI mid-plane density n_0 = 1.3e-8 cm^-3. The density decreases away from the plane of the Galax…
We describe the calibration status and data products pertaining to the GR2 and GR3 data releases of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). These releases have identical pipeline calibrations that are significantly improved over the GR1 data release. GALEX continues to survey the sky in the Far Ultraviolet (FUV, ~154 nm) and Near Ultraviolet (NUV, ~232 nm) bands, providing simultaneous imaging with a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay line readout detectors. These 1.25 degree field-of-view detectors are well-suited to ultraviolet observations because of their excellent red rejec…
Observations obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) have been used to determine the column densities of D I, O I, and N I along seven sight lines that probe the local interstellar medium (LISM) at distances from 37 pc to 179 pc. Five of the sight lines are within the Local Bubble and two penetrate the surrounding H I wall. Reliable values of N(H I) were determined for five of the sight lines from HST data, IUE data, and published EUVE measurements. The weighted mean of D I/H I for these five sight lines is (1.52 +/- 0.08) x10-5 (1 sigma uncertainty in the mean). It is …
Recent ultraviolet spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellites demonstrate that UV line and continuum fluxes observed from Mira B are increasing back towards the levels that the International Ultraviolet Explorer observed in 1979-1980 and 1990-1995, after having been found in a very low state by HST and FUSE in 1999-2001. The UV emission is associated with accretion of material onto Mira B from Mira A's massive wind, so the variability is presumably due to variations in accretion rate. From wind absorption features, we estimate a M…
We describe the scientific motivations, the mission concept and the instrumentation of SPACE, a class-M mission proposed for concept study at the first call of the ESA Cosmic-Vision 2015-2025 planning cycle. SPACE aims to produce the largest three-dimensional evolutionary map of the Universe over the past 10 billion years by taking near-IR spectra and measuring redshifts for more than half a billion galaxies at 0<z<2 down to AB~23 over 3πsr of the sky. In addition, SPACE will also target a smaller sky field, performing a deep spectroscopic survey of millions of galaxies to AB~26 and at 2<z<10+…
We present a study of the iron abundance pattern in hot hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs. The study is based on new and archival far ultraviolet spectroscopy of a sample of white dwarfs in the temperature range 30,000 K < T_eff < 64,000 K. The spectra obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer along with spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and the International Ultraviolet Explorer sample FeIII to FeVI absorption lines enabling a detailed iron abundance analysis over a wider range of effective temperatures than previously afforded. The measurement…
Using the Multimission Archives at Space Telescope (MAST), we have extracted spectra and determined continuum light curves for 175 Seyfert Galaxies that have been observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). To obtain the light curves as a function of Julian Date, we used fix bins in the object's rest frame, and measured small regions (between 30 and 60 Angstroms) of each spectrum's continuum flux in the range 1150 Angstroms to 3200 Angstroms. We provide access to the UV light curves and other basic info…
Using the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) we have obtained 87 spectra of 57 low-redshift (z<0.15) active galactic nuclei (AGN). This sample comprises 53 Type 1 AGN and 4 Type 2. All the Type 1 objects show broad O VI 1034 emission; two of the Type 2s show narrow O VI emission. In addition to O VI, we also identify emission lines due to C III 977, N III 991, S IV 1062,1072, and He II 1085 in many of the Type-1 AGN. Of the Type 1 objects, 30 show intrinsic absorption by the O VI 1032,1038 doublet. Most of these intrinsic absorption systems show multiple components with intrinsic wi…
The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite accumulated ~one million seconds of public data between 1994 and 1997 for the BL Lacertae object Markarian 421. This is the second of two papers in which we present the results of spectral and temporal analysis of this EUVE data set. We analyze in the present paper the imaging data by means of power spectrum and structure function techniques, while the spectral analysis is presented in a companion paper. We find for MRK 421 a power spectrum with slope -2.14 +- 0.28 with a break at ~3 days. This is the first time that a break in the power spectr…
We report the first year on-orbit performance results for the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer that is performing a survey of the sky in two ultraviolet bands. The instrument comprises a 50 cm diameter modified Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 1.25 degree field of view, selectable imaging and objective grism spectroscopic modes, and an innovative optical system with a thin-film multilayer dichroic beam splitter that enables simultaneous imaging by a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay line readout detectors. Initial measurements demonstrate that GALEX is…
We report the results of a systematic study of the vacuum-ultraviolet spectra of 45 starburst and related galaxies observed with the IUE satellite. These span broad ranges in metallicity, bolometric luminosity, and galaxy properties. The projected size of the IUE spectroscopic aperture is typically one to several kpc and therefore usually encompasses the entire starburst and is similar to the aperture-sizes used for spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies. Our principal conclusion is that local starbursts occupy a very small fractional volume in the multi-dimensional manifold defined by such fu…
Galmatheia is a broad bandpass (900-1800 Angstrom), far-ultraviolet (FUV) nebular spectrograph (lambda /delta lambda ~ 650) for the study of the evolution of galactic plasma with a temperature of 10^4.5 - 10^6 K. Galmatheia will survey the FUV sky with 5' imaging and conduct hundreds of deep 8 degree x 5' field pointings during its proposed two-year mission. Unprecedented sensitivity is achieved by careful exclusion of FUV-bright stars and airglow background. The emission-line sensitivity for a single-day exposure and for a one-year sky survey 3 degree x 3 degree bin yields 50 sigma and 10-15 …
We present a complete sample of International Ultraviolet Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) spectra of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) through 2004. We measure the equivalent width (EW) and blueshifted velocity of the minimum of the one strong UV feature, Fe II 3250. We also quantify the slope of the near-UV spectra using a new parameter, the ``UV ratio.'' We find that the velocity of the Fe II line does not correlate with light-curve shape, while the EW shows distinct behavior for the slow and fast-declining objects. Using precise Cepheid and surface brightness fluctuation dist…
We present preliminary results from a FUV spectroscopic and photometric survey of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our main goal is to either confirm or rule out the existence of a large population of CVs in the core of this cluster. We have so far identified approximately 425 FUV sources, most of which are probably hot, young WDs. However, we have also found approximately 30 FUV sources whose position in a FUV-optical color-magnitude diagram makes them strong CV candidates. If most or all of these objects are eventually confirmed as CVs, the large CV population predicted by tidal capture theory h…
GALEX has identified large numbers of extra galactic objects that are too faint to be observed by FUSE. These star forming systems are potential sources of Lyman continuum (Lyc) radiation and may contribute to the metagalactic background radiation that ionizes most of the baryons in the universe. By measuring the level of Lyc radiation leaking from these galaxies we can quantify the contribution of stars, relative to quasars, to the ionizing background at low redshift (0.025 <~ z <~ 0.4) and provide insight into the reionization processes at high redshift. A meter class instrument with a moder…
We analyzed the ~950 ks of spectroscopic data accumulated by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite between 1994 and 1997 for the BL Lacertae object Markarian 421. The EUV spectrum is well detected in the 70-110 A (112-177 eV) range and can be fitted by a power law model plus an absorption feature in the ~71-75 A range. Previous studies of EUV absorption features in MRK 421 and in the other EUV bright BL Lac object, PKS2155-304, explain this absorption feature as a superposition of Doppler-smeared absorption lines (mainly L- and M-shell transitions of Mg and Ne) originating in high-…
We have analyzed the Far Ultraviolet Spectrocopic Explorer (FUSE) spectra of two U Gem-Type dwarf novae, SS Aur and RU Peg, observed 28 days and 60 days (respectively) after their last outburst. In both systems the FUSE spectra (905 - 1182 A) reveal evidence of the underlying accreting white dwarf exposed in the far UV. Our grid of theoretical models yielded a best-fitting photosphere to the FUSE spectra with Teff=31,000K for SS Aur and Teff=49,000K for RU Peg. This work provides two more dwarf nova systems with known white dwarf temperatures above the period gap where few are known. The absen…
FUSE ultraviolet spectra of 8 giant and supergiant stars reveal that high temperature (3 X 10^5 K) atmospheres are common in luminous cool stars and extend across the color-magnitude diagram from Alpha Car (F0 II) to the cool giant Alpha Tau (K5 III). Emission present in these spectra includes chromospheric H-Lyman Beta, Fe II, C I, and transition region lines of C III, O VI, Si III, Si IV. Emission lines of Fe XVIII and Fe XIX signaling temperatures of ~10^7 K and coronal material are found in the most active stars, Beta Cet and 31 Com. A short-term flux variation, perhaps a flare, was detect…
The far-ultraviolet spectrum of the DAO White Dwarf LS V+4621, the exciting star of the possible planetary nebula Sh 2-216,is strongly contaminated by absorption features from the interstellar medium (ISM). For an ongoing spectral analysis, we aim to extract the pure photospheric spectrum in order to identify and model metal lines of species which are not detectable in the near-ultraviolet wavelength range. We have modeled the interstellar absorption precisely and considered it for the simulation of the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) observation. A state-of-the-art NLTE model-at…
We observed five central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and three in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), in the range 905-1187 Ang. We performed a model-based analysis of these spectra in conjunction with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra in the UV and optical range to determine stellar and nebular parameters. The signature of hot (T >~ 2000 K) circumstellar molecular hydrogen is found in the FUSE spectra of most objects. We also find evidence of X-rays in the wind of LMC-SMP 76.
We present far ultraviolet spectra of a fast (~ 300 km/s) nonradiative shock in the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. Our observations were performed with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite, covering the wavelength range 905-1187 Angstroms. The purpose of these observations was to estimate the degree of electron-ion equilibration by (1) examining the variation of O VI 1032, 1038 intensity with position behind the shock, and (2) measuring the widths of the O VI lines. We find significant absorption near the center of the O VI 1032 line, with less absorption in O VI 1038. T…
N66/NGC346 is the largest and brightest HII region in the Small Magellanic Cloud and contains at least one known supernova remnant SNR0057-7226. Optical emission from the remnant is overwhelmed by the bright photoionized emission from the nebula, but the remnant has been detected by way of far ultraviolet absorption lines. Here we present data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) satellite showing strong OVI and CIII emission from a position at the edge of SNR0057-7226. We also present high-resolution, long-slit Halpha spectra across N66 showing high- and low-velocity emissio…
We report on extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopic observations of the B bright giant epsilon Canis Majoris made during the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission. We assess the performance of the instrument in the EUV and find that the effective area is roughly 3 times that of the Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) long-wavelength spectrometer and that the spectral resolution is lambda/Delta(lambda) = 1250. We identify most of the features, qualitatively compare different models, and examine the wind-broadened O V and Si IV lines, which display blue edge velocities up to 800 km/s.
We present the far-ultraviolet spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy 2MASX J21362313-6224008 obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The spectrum features absorption from Galactic OVI at two velocities and redshifted HI Lyman beta and gamma, CII, CIII, and O VI. The redshifted absorption features represent a single kinematic component blueshifted by ~310 km/s relative to the AGN. We use photoionization models to derive constraints on the physical parameters of the absorbing gas. An alternative interpretation for the absorption lines is also proposed, whereby the absorbing g…
We present extinction curves that include data down to far ultraviolet wavelengths (FUV; 1050 - 1200 A) for nine Galactic sight lines. The FUV extinction was measured using data from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. The sight lines were chosen for their unusual extinction properties in the infrared through the ultraviolet; that they probe a wide range of dust environments is evidenced by the large spread in their measured ratios of total-to-selective extinction, R_V = 2.43 - 3.81. We find that extrapolation of the Fitzpatrick & Massa relationship from the ultraviolet appears to be a…
The International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite has made a tremendous contribution to the study of hot-star winds. Its long lifetime has resulted in the collection of ultraviolet spectra for a large sample of OB stars. Its unique monitoring capability has enabled detailed time-series analyses to investigate the stellar-wind variability for individual objects. IUE has also been a major driver for the development of the radiation-driven-wind theory; the synergy between theory and observations is one of the main reasons for the large progress that has been made in our understanding of hot-star w…
The number of detected baryons in the low-redshift Universe (z < 1) is far small er than the corresponding number of baryons observed at higher redshift. According to hydrodynamical simulations for the formation of structure in the Universe, up to 2/3 of the 'missing baryons' may have escaped identification so far, due to their high temperature and low density. One of the few ways to detect this matter is to look for its UV absorption signature on the light from background sources. Here we show that the amplitude of the average velocity vector of 'high velocity' OVI absorbers detected in a UV …
