We investigate how hot-electron fluctuations in n-type Si are affected by the presence of an intense (static) magnetic field in a Hall geometry. By using the Monte Carlo method, we find that the known Hall-effect-induced redistribution of electrons among valleys can suppress electron fluctuations with a simultaneous enhancement of the drift velocity.
InAs/AlAs$_{x}$Sb$_{1-x}$ quantum wells are investigated for their potential as hot carrier solar cells. Continuous wave power and temperature dependent photoluminescence indicate a transition in the dominant hot carrier relaxation process from conventional phonon-mediated carrier relaxation below 90 K to a regime where inhibited radiative recombination dominates the hot carrier relaxation at elevated temperatures. At temperatures below 90 K photoluminescence measurements are consistent with type-I quantum wells that exhibit hole localization associated with alloy/interface fluctuations. At el…
We have measured spin Hall effects in spin glass metals, CuMnBi alloys, with the spin absorption method in the lateral spin valve structure. Far above the spin glass temperature Tg where the magnetic moments of Mn impurities are randomly frozen, the spin Hall angle of CuMnBi ternary alloy is as large as that of CuBi binary alloy. Surprisingly, however, it starts to decrease at about 4Tg and becomes as little as 7 times smaller at 0.5Tg. A similar tendency was also observed in anomalous Hall effects in the ternary alloys. We propose an explanation in terms of a simple model considering the rela…
We report measurements of the thermal Hall effect in single crystals of both pristine and isotopically substituted strontium titanate. We discovered a two orders of magnitude difference in the thermal Hall conductivity between $SrTi^{16}O_3$ and $^{18}O$-enriched $SrTi^{18}O_3$ samples. In most temperature ranges, the magnitude of thermal Hall conductivity ($κ_{xy}$) in $SrTi^{18}O_3$ is proportional to the magnitude of the longitudinal thermal conductivity ($κ_{xx}$), which suggests a phonon-mediated thermal Hall effect. However, they deviate in the temperature of their maxima, and the therma…
Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect appears in ferromagnetic topological insulators (FMTI) when a Dirac mass gap opens in the spectrum of the topological surface states (SS). Unaccountably, although the mean mass gap can exceed 28 meV (or ~320 K), the QAH effect is frequently only detectable at temperatures below 1 K. Using atomic-resolution Landau level spectroscopic imaging, we compare the electronic structure of the archetypal FMTI Cr_0.08(Bi_0.1Sb_0.9)_1.92Te_3 to that of its non-magnetic parent (Bi_0.1Sb_0.9)_2Te_3, to explore the cause. In (Bi_0.1Sb_0.9)_2Te_3, we find spatially random v…
Materials exhibiting controllable magnetic phase transitions are currently in demand for many spintronics applications. Here we investigate from first principles the electronic structure and intrinsic anomalous Hall, spin Hall and anomalous Nernst response properties of the FeRh metallic alloy which undergoes a thermally driven antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition. We show that the energy band structures and underlying Berry curvatures have important signatures in the various Hall effects. Specifically, the suppression of the anomalous Hall and Nernst effects in the AFM state an…
We investigate ultrafast dynamics of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the topological antiferromagnet Mn3Sn with sub-100 fs time resolution. Optical pulse excitations largely elevate the electron temperature up to 700 K, and terahertz probe pulses clearly resolves ultrafast suppression of the AHE before demagnetization. The result is well reproduced by microscopic calculation of the intrinsic Berry-curvature mechanism while the extrinsic contribution is clearly excluded. Our work opens a new avenue for the study of nonequilibrium AHE to identify the microscopic origin by drastic control of t…
Propagating, directionally dependent, polarized spin-currents are created in an anisotropic planar semiconductor microcavity, via Rayleigh scattering of optically injected polaritons in the optical spin Hall regime. The influence of anisotropy results in the suppression or enhancement of the pseudospin precession of polaritons scattered into different directions. This is exploited to create intense spin currents by excitation on top of localized defects. A theoretical model considering the influence of the total effective magnetic field on the polariton pseudospin quantitatively reproduces the…
The carrier spin and impurity spin densities in diluted magnetic semiconductors are considered using a semiclassical approach. Equations of motions for the spin densities and the carrier spin current density in the paramagnetic phase are derived, exhibiting their coupled diffusive dynamics. The dynamical spin susceptibilities are obtained from these equations. The theory holds for p-type and n-type semiconductors doped with magnetic ions of arbitrary spin quantum number. Spin-orbit coupling in the valence band is shown to lead to anisotropic spin diffusion and to a suppression of the Curie tem…
Current-induced spin-orbit torques in Co$_2$FeAl/Pt ultrathin bilayers are studied using a magnetoresistive harmonic response technique, which distinguishes the dampinglike and fieldlike contributions. The presence of a temperature-dependent magnetic proximity effect is observed through the anomalous Hall and anisotropic magnetoresistances, which are enhanced at low temperatures for thin platinum thicknesses. The fieldlike torque efficiency decreases steadily as the temperature is lowered for all Pt thicknesses studied, which we propose is related to the influence of the magnetic proximity eff…
Hall, resistivity, magnetization, and thermoelectric power measurements were performed on single crystals of the highly anisotropic layered metal LaSb2. A 100-fold linear magnetoresistance (MR) was observed in fields up to 45 T, with no indication of saturation. We show that the MR is associated with a magnetic-field-dependent holelike carrier density, n(H) \propto 1/H. The effect is orbital, depending upon the component of the magnetic field normal to the layers. At low temperature, a field of 9 T reduces the carrier density by more than an order of magnitude.

We report the observation of magnetic-field-induced suppression of the spin Peltier effect (SPE) in a junction of a paramagnetic metal Pt and a ferrimagnetic insulator ${\rm Y_{3}Fe_{5}O_{12}}$ (YIG) at room temperature. For driving the SPE, spin currents are generated via the spin Hall effect from applied charge currents in the Pt layer, and injected into the adjacent thick YIG film. The resultant temperature modulation is detected by a commonly-used thermocouple attached to the Pt/YIG junction. The output of the thermocouple shows sign reversal when the magnetization is reversed and linearly…
The antiferromagnetic ground state and the metamagnetic transition to the ferromagnetic state of CsCl-ordered FeRh epilayers have been characterized using Hall and magnetoresistance measure- ments. On cooling into the ground state, the metamagnetic transition is found to coincide with a suppression in carrier density of at least an order of magnitude below the typical metallic level shown by the ferromagnetic state. The data reveal that this sub-metallic density of electron-like majority carriers in the antiferromagnetic phase are attributable to intrinsic doping from Fe/Rh substitution defect…
A density-functional-theory based relativistic scattering formalism is used to study charge transport through thin Pt films with room temperature lattice disorder. A Fuchs-Sondheimer specularity coefficient $p \sim 0.5$ is needed to describe the suppression of the charge current at the surface even in the absence of surface roughness. The charge current drives a spin Hall current perpendicular to the surface. Analysing the latter with a model that is universally used to interpret the spin Hall effect in thin films and layered materials, we are unable to recover values of the spin-flip diffusio…
We investigate the electron-hole two-stream instability (or Coulomb drag) in intrinsic bilayer graphene in the hydrodynamic regime, accounting for the effects of temperature, initial drift velocity, magnetic field, and collisions. The threshold drift speed for the onset of instabilities is of the order of the thermal velocity of the carriers. We put in evidence an unprecedented purely electrostatic mechanism leading to current relaxation, giving rise to a well-defined dc longitudinal conductivity $\propto T^{3/2}$. Due to competition between electrostatic and collisional processes, two distinc…
