To test the validity of replacing a composite fermion by an elementary fermion, we here calculate the transition rate from a state made of one free electron and one trion to a similar electron-trion pair, through the time evolution of such a pair induced by Coulomb interaction between elementary fermions. To do it in a convenient way, we describe the trion as one electron interacting with one exciton, and we use the tools we have developed in the new composite-exciton many-body theory. The trion-electron scattering contains a direct channel in which ``in'' and ``out'' trions are made with the same fermions, and an exchange channel in which the ``in'' free electron becomes one of the ``out'' trion components. As expected, momenta are conserved in these two channels. The direct scattering is found to read as the bare Coulomb potential between elementary particles multiplied by a form factor which depends on the ``in'' and ``out'' trion relative motion indices $η$ and $η'$, this factor reducing to $δ_{ηη'}$ in the zero momentum transfer limit: In this direct channel, the trion at large distance reacts as an elementary particle, its composite nature showing up for large momentum transfer. On the contrary, the fact that the trion is not elementary does affect the exchange channel for all momentum transfers. We thus conclude that a 3-component fermion behaves as an elementary fermion for direct processes in the small momentum transfer limit only.
Effect of spin-dependent tunneling and intervalley scattering in magnetic-semiconductor van der Waals heterostructures on exciton and trion polarization
We theoretically investigate the nonlinearity of trion-polaritons in a two-dimensional material that arises from Coulomb interaction between quasiparticles. To evaluate the interaction constant, we solve a three-body Wannier equation precisely by expanding trion wavefunctions into a Gaussian basis. Using these wavefunctions, we calculate the trion-polariton interaction energies for the exchange processes, resolving the outstanding question of trion-trion scattering. We find that the nonlinearity is the result of the competition between different scattering channels. Such a cancellation effect …
We develop a theoretical description of Coulomb interactions between trions (charged excitons) that define a nonlinear optical response in doped two-dimensional semiconductors. First, we formulate a microscopic theory of trion-trion interactions based on composite nature of these particles, and account for all possible exchange processes. Next, we calculate numerically the trion binding energies and corresponding three-body wavefunctions using a basis set with high expressivity. Then, using the obtained wavefunctions we calculate the matrix elements of two-trion scattering, and compare the con…
Monolayer 2D semiconductors provide an attractive option for valleytronics due to the valley-addressability by helicity-specific light beam. But the short valley lifetime for excitons have hindered potential valleytronic applications. In this paper, we demonstrate a strategy for prolonging the valley lifetime by converting excitons to trions through effective gate control and by taking advantage of much longer valley lifetime for trions than for excitons. In continuous-wave experiments, we found the valley polarization increases as gate voltage is tuned away from the charge neutrality, with th…
The interaction of optically excited excitons in atomically thin semiconductors with residual doping densities leads to many-body effects which are continuously tunable by external gate voltages. Here, we develop a fully microscopic theory to describe the doping-dependent manipulation of the excitonic properties in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides. In particular, we establish a diagonalization approach for the Schrödinger equation which characterizes the interaction of a virtual exciton with the Fermi sea of dopants. Solving this many-body Schrödinger equation provides access t…
The effect of bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (TFSI, superacid) treatment on the optical properties of MoS$_2$ monolayers is investigated by means of photoluminescence, reflectance contrast and Raman scattering spectroscopy employed in a broad temperature range. It is shown that when applied multiple times, the treatment results in progressive quenching of the trion emission/absorption and in the redshift of the neutral exciton emission/absorption associated with both the A and B excitonic resonances. Based on this evolution, a trion complex related to the B exciton in monolayer MoS$_2$ is u…
Moiré superlattice-induced sub-bands in twisted van der Waals homo- and hetero-structures govern their optical and electrical properties, rendering additional degrees of freedom such as twist angle. Here, we demonstrate the moiré superlattice effects on the intralayer excitons and trions in a twisted bilayer of MoS$_2$ of H-type stacking at marginal twist angles. We identify the emission from localized and multiple delocalized sub-bands of intralayer moiré excitons and show their electrical modulation by the corresponding trion formation. The electrical control of the oscillator strength of th…
The coherent third-order nonlinear response of monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors, such as MoSe$_2$ is dominated by the nonlinear exciton response, as well as biexciton and trion resonances. The fact that these resonances may be spectrally close together makes identification of the signatures, for example in differential transmission (DT), challenging. Instead of focusing on explaining a given set of experimental data, a systematic study aimed at elucidating the roles of intravalley and intervalley electron-hole (e-h) exchange on the DT spectra is presented. Previou…
A theory of electron spin-flip Raman scattering (SFRS) is presented that describes the Raman spectral signals shifted by both single and twice the electron Zeeman energy under nearly resonant excitation of the heavy hole excitons in semiconductor nanoplatelets. We analyze the spin structure of photoexcited intermediate states, derive compound matrix elements of the spin-flip scattering and obtain polarization properties of the one- and two-electron SFRS common for all the intermediate states. We show that, in the resonant scattering process under consideration, the complexes "exciton plus loca…
One of the main tasks in the investigation of 2-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides is the determination of valley lifetimes. In this work, we combine time-resolved Kerr rotation with electrical transport measurements to explore the gate-dependent valley lifetimes of free conduction band electrons of monolayer WSe$_2$. When tuning the Fermi energy into the conduction band we observe a strong decrease of the respective valley lifetimes which is consistent with both spin-orbit and electron-phonon scattering. We explain the formation of a valley polarization by the scattering of opticall…
