Vortex pseudomomentum and dissipation in a superfluid vortex lattice

We propose an alternative approach to the dissipative vortex dynamics occurring in a superfluid vortex lattice at finite temperatures. Focusing upon the pseudomomentum of a vortex and its surrounding quasiparticles, we derive an equation of motion which, in spite of yielding the same evolution as the usual one for massless vortices, does not involve the vortex mass. This picture could provide further insights into the controversy about the nature of the vortex mass.

Interaction of ballistic quasiparticles and vortex configurations in superfluid He3-B

Vortex Lattice Inhomogeneity in Spatially Inhomogeneous Superfluids

A trapped degenerate Bose gas exhibits superfluidity with spatially nonuniform superfluid density. We show that the vortex distribution in such a highly inhomogeneous rotating superfluid is nevertheless nearly uniform. The inhomogeneity in vortex density, which diminishes in the rapid-rotation limit, is driven by the discrete way vortices impart angular momentum to the superfluid. This effect favors highest vortex density in regions where the superfluid density is most uniform (e.g., the center of a harmonically trapped gas). Anomalous vortex ring velocities induced by thermally-excited Kelvin waves and counterflow effects in superfluids

Dynamical counterflow effects on vortex evolution under the truncated Gross-Pitaevskii equation are investigated. Standard longitudinal mutual friction effects are produced and a dilatation of vortex rings is obtained at large counterflow. A strong temperature-dependent anomalous slowdown of vortex rings is observed and attributed to the presence of thermally exited Kelvin waves. This generic effect of finite-temperature superfluids is estimated using energy equipartition and orders of magnitude are given for weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates and superfluid $^4{\rm He}$.

Reconnection of superfluid vortex bundles

Using the vortex filament model and the Gross Pitaevskii nonlinear Schroedinger equation, we show that bundles of quantised vortex lines in helium II are structurally robust and can reconnect with each other maintaining their identity. We discuss vortex stretching in superfluid turbulence and show that, during the bundle reconnection process, Kelvin waves of large amplitude are generated, in agreement with the finding that helicity is produced by nearly singular vortex interactions in classical Euler flows.

The Vortex State in a Strongly Coupled Dilute Atomic Fermionic Superfluid

We show that in a dilute Fermionic superfluid, when the Fermions interact with an infinite scattering length, a vortex state is characterized by a strong density depletion along the vortex core. This feature can make a direct visualization of vortices in Fermionic superfluids possible.

Characteristic length scale and energy of a vortex line in a dilute, superfluid Fermi gas

We calculate the characteristic length scale of a vortex line in a dilute, superfluid gas of fermionic atoms, and find that it is in general smaller, and has a weaker density dependence than the BCS coherence length. Taking this into account, we find the energy of a vortex line to be larger than has previously been estimated. As a consequence, the critical frequency for formation of vortices in trapped fermion gases can be significantly larger than earlier calculations have suggested.

Berry Phase Effects on Dynamics of Quasiparticles in a Superfluid with a Vortex

We study quasiparticle dynamics in a Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex by following the center of mass motion of a Bogoliubov wavepacket, and find important Berry phase effects due to the background flow. We show that Berry phase invalidates the usual canonical relation between the mechanical momentum and position variables, leading to important modifications of quasiparticle statistics and thermodynamic properties of the condensates. Vortex-loop calculation of the specific heat of superfluid $^4$He under pressure

Vortex-loop renormalization is used to compute the specific heat of superfluid $^4$He near the lambda point at various pressures up to 26 bars. The input parameters are the the pressure dependence of T$_λ$ and the superfluid density, which determine the non-universal parameters of the vortex core energy and core size. The results for the specific heat are found to be in good agreement with experimental data, matching the expected universal pressure dependence to within about 5$\%$. Sound emission due to superfluid vortex reconnections

By performing numerical simulations of superfluid vortex ring collisions we make direct quantitative measurements of the sound energy released due to vortex reconnections. We show that the energy radiated expressed in terms of the loss of vortex line length is a simple function of the reconnection angle. In addition, we study the temporal and spatial distribution of the radiation and show that energy is emitted in the form of a rarefaction pulse. The pulse evolves into a sound wave with a wavelength of 6-8 healing lengths.

Images and nonlocal vortex pinning in thin superfluid films

For thin films of superfluid adsorbed on a disordered substrate, we derive the equation of motion for a vortex in the presence of a random potential within a mean field (Hartree) description of the condensate. The compressible nature of the condensate leads to an effective pinning potential experienced by the vortex which is nonlocal, with a long range tail that smoothes out the random potential coupling the condensate to the substrate. Vortex state in a superfluid Fermi gas near a Feshbach resonance

We consider a single vortex in a superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover regime near a Feshbach resonance. The effect of the molecular Bose-Einstein condensate upon the vortex structure is discussed within the mean field approximation at zero temperature. Using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation of the fermion-boson coupled model, we calculate density distributions of atoms and molecules. Dislocation-Mediated Melting in Superfluid Vortex Lattices

We describe thermal melting of the two-dimensional vortex lattice in a rotating superfluid by generalizing the Halperin and Nelson theory of dislocation-mediated melting. and derive a melting temperature proportional to the renormalized shear modulus of the vortex lattice. Hidden vortex lattices in a thermally paired superfluid

We study the evolution of rotational response of a hydrodynamic model of a two-component superfluid with a non-dissipative drag interaction, as the system undergoes a transition into a paired phase at finite temperature. The transition manifests itself in a change of (i) vortex lattice symmetry, and (ii) nature of vortex state. Instead of a vortex lattice, the system forms a highly disordered tangle which constantly undergoes merger and reconnecting processes involving different types of vortices, with a "hidden" breakdown of translational symmetry.

The dynamics of vortex generation in superfluid 3He-B

A profound change occurs in the stability of quantized vortices in externally applied flow of superfluid 3He-B at temperatures ~ 0.6 Tc, owing to the rapidly decreasing damping in vortex motion with decreasing temperature. Vortex Core Size in $^3$He-$^4$He films with Monolayer Superfluid $^4$He

The superfluid transition of $^3$He-$^4$He mixture films adsorbed on alumina powder is studied, with a $^4$He superfluid coverage near one layer. With up to 1.3 layers of $^3$He added, the transition becomes strongly broadened, indicating a linear increase in the vortex core size for $^3$He coverages below one layer. Annealing of the sample mixture at 4.2 K is found to be critically important in ensuring a homogeneous film across the porous substrate.

Vortex Fluctuations in the Critical Casimir Effect of Superfluid and Superconducting Films

Vortex-loop renormalization techniques are used to calculate the magnitude of the critical Casimir forces in superfluid films. The force is found to become appreciable when size of the thermal vortex loops is comparable to the film thickness, and the results for T < Tc are found to match very well with perturbative renormalization theories that have only been carried out for T > Tc. When applied to a high-Tc superconducting film connected to a bulk sample, the Casimir force causes a voltage difference to appear between the film and bulk, and estimates show that this may be readily measurable.
