The line profile variability and photometric variability of the O9.5 Vp star HD93521 are examined in order to establish the properties of the non-radial pulsations in this star. Fourier techniques are used to characterize the modulations of the He I 5876, 6678 and H-alpha lines in several spectroscopic time series and to search for variations in a photometric time series. Our spectroscopic data confirm the existence of two periods of 1.75 and 2.89 hr. The line profiles, especially those affected by emission wings, exhibit also modulations on longer time scales, but these are epoch-dependent and change from line to line. Unlike previous claims, we find no unambiguous signature of the rotational period in our data, nor of a third pulsation period (corresponding to a frequency of 2.66 day$^{-1}$). HD 93521 very likely exhibits non-radial pulsations with periods of 1.75 and 2.89 hr with $l \simeq 8 \pm 1$ and $l \simeq 4 \pm 1$ respectively. No significant signal is found in the first harmonics of these two periods. The 2.89 hr mode is seen at all epochs and in all lines investigated, while the visibility of the 1.75 hr mode is clearly epoch dependent. Whilst light variations are detected, their connection to these periodicities is not straightforward.
We have studied the photometric variability of ten SMC Be/X-ray pulsars using MACHO and OGLE-II data. For some of these systems we have found periodic behavior, including orbital outbursts and/or nonradial pulsations (NRP) of the Be star. For others we were unable to identify any clear photometric periodicity, although their longterm light curves show significant structure. We present periodograms, phase dispersion minimization (PDM) variances, and folded light curves for the systems which exhibit periodic photometric variability.
The Faint Sky Variability Survey (FSVS) is aimed at finding photometric and/or astrometric variable objects between 16th and 24th mag on time-scales between tens of minutes and years with photometric precisions ranging from 3 millimag to 0.2 mag. An area of 23 deg$^2$, located at mid and high Galactic latitudes, was covered using the Wide Field Camera (WFC) on the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) on La Palma. Here we present some preliminary results on the variability of sources in the FSVS.
The preliminary analysis of the optical data of SN1999cw show that this object has the photometric and spectroscopic behavior of a Type Ia supernova similar to SN1991T, reaching an apparent magnitude at maximum B(max)=14.30 and a Delta m_{15}(B)=0.94.
The Becklin-Neugebauer (BN) object in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is a well-studied optically invisible, infrared-bright young stellar object, thought to be an intermediate-mass protostar. We report here that BN exhibited nearly-sinusoidal periodic variability at the near-infrared H- and Ks-bands during a one month observing campaign in 2000 March/April. The period was 8.28 days and the peak-to-peak amplitude ~0.2 mag. Plausible mechanisms for producing the observed variability characteristics are explored.
A small fraction of subluminous B stars show short-period, multiperiodic light variations and form the new class of pulsating star known as EC 14026 variables, after the prototype. The Multi-Site Spectroscopic Telescope (MSST) is a virtual instrument and is also the name of a collaboration that aims to open up a new observational window to provide access to a mode identification for and an asteroseismological analysis of the pulsating sdB star PG 1605+072. Although the primary aim is to obtain time resolved spectroscopy it also includes the most extended photometric monitoring campaign for PG …
We present a study of the photometric variability of spectroscopically confirmed supergiants in NGC 300, comprising 28 epochs extending over a period of five months. We find 15 clearly photometrically variable blue supergiants in a sample of nearly 70 such stars, showing maximum light amplitudes ranging from 0.08 to 0.23 magnitudes in the V band, and one variable red supergiant. We show their light curves, and determine semi-periods for two A2 Ia stars. Assuming that the observed changes correspond to similar variations in the bolometric luminosity, we test for the influence of this variabilit…
The K20 survey is an ESO VLT optical and near-infrared spectroscopic survey aimed at obtaining spectral information and redshifts of a complete sample of about 550 objects to K_s\leq20.0 over two independent fields with a total area of 52 arcmin^2. In this paper we discuss the scientific motivation of such a survey, we describe the photometric and spectroscopic properties of the sample, and we release the $K_s$-band photometric catalog. Extensive simulations showed that the sample is photometrically highly complete to K_s=20. The observed galaxy counts and the R-K_s color distribution are cons…
We present a unique, homogeneous database of photometric measurements for Classical T Tauri stars extending up to 20 years. The database contains more than 21,000 UBVR observations of 72 CTTs. All the data were collected within the framework of the ROTOR-program at Mount Maidanak Observatory (Uzbekistan) and together they constitute the longest homogeneous, accurate record of TTS variability ever assembled. We characterize the long term photometric variations of 49 CTTs with sufficient data to allow a robust statistical analysis and propose an empirical classification scheme. Several patterns …
We study photometric variability among the optical counterparts of X-ray sources in the old open cluster M67. The two puzzling binaries below the giant branch are both variables: for S1113 the photometric period is compatible with the orbital period, S1063 either varies on a period longer than the orbital period, or does not vary periodically. For the spectroscopic binaries S999, S1070 and S1077 the photometric and orbital periods are similar. Another new periodic variable is the main-sequence star S1112, not known to be a binary. An increase of the photometric period in the WUMa system S1282 …
We present an analysis of spectroscopic and photometric data for cool DQ white dwarfs based on improved model atmosphere calculations. In particular, we revise the atmospheric parameters of the trigonometric parallax sample of Bergeron et al.(2001), and discuss the astrophysical implications on the temperature scale and mean mass, as well as the chemical evolution of these stars. We also analyze 40 new DQ stars discovered in the first data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
We present spectroscopic and photometric data for 920 galaxies selected in 68 fields of the Aquarius Cluster Catalog. Typically the 15 brightest candidate members with magnitudes in the range 16 < b_J < 21 were selected for observations, and ~ 71% turn out to be cluster members. Using the new redshift determinations we assign galaxies to groups and clusters, and by including data from the literature we calculate systemic velocities and velocity dispersions for 74 clusters, each with redshifts measured for at least 6 individual galaxies.
We have monitored the photometric variability of nine field L and T brown dwarfs for 10 nights during the course of one month with the Palomar 60 inch Telescope Near-Infrared Camera. Results of statistical analyses indicate that at least three of the nine targets show significant evidence for variability, and three more are possibly variable. Fractional deviations from the median flux vary from 5% to 25%. Two of the variable targets, 2MASS 0030-14 (L7) and SDSS 0151+12 (T1), have marginally significant peaks in their periodograms. The phased light curves show evidence for periodic behavior on …
HH 30 is an edge-on disk around a young stellar object. Previous imaging with the Hubble Space Telescope has show morphological variability that is possibly related to the rotation of the star or the disk. We report the results of two terrestrial observing campaigns to monitor the integrated magnitude of HH 30. We use the Lomb-Scargle periodogram to look for periodic modulation with periods between 2 days and almost 90 days in these two data sets and in a third, previously published, data set. We develop a method to deal with short-term correlations in the data. Our results indicate that none …
We present a comparison between the spectroscopic catalog of the HDF recently published by Cohen et al and the redshifts measured by our group for those objects using photometric techniques. We perform this comparison in order to characterize the errors associated to the photometric redshift technique. The spectroscopic sample includes over 140 objects in the HDF proper, representing the deepest, cleanest, most complete spectroscopic catalog ever compiled. We study each object for which our redshift and the one measured by Cohen et al disagree. In most cases the photometric evidence is strong …
We use the deepest and most complete redshift catalog currently available (the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North supplemented by new HDF South redshift data) to minimize residuals between photometric and spectroscopic redshift estimates. The good agreement at z_spec < 1.5 shows that model libraries provide a good description of the galaxy population. At z_spec > 2.0, the systematic shift between photometric and spectroscopic redshifts decreases when the modeling of the absorption by the interstellar and intergalactic media is refined. As a result, in the entire redshift range 0 < z < 6, residuals …
We have detected a strong periodicity of 1.80+/-0.05 hours in photometric observations of the brown dwarf Kelu-1. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the variation is ~1.1% (11.9+/-0.8 mmag) in a 41nm wide filter centred on 857nm and including the dust/temperature sensitive TiO & CrH bands. We have identified two plausible causes of variability: surface features rotating into- and out-of-view and so modulating the light curve at the rotation period; or, elliposidal variability caused by an orbiting companion. In the first scenario, we combine the observed vsin(i) of Kelu-1 and standard model radius …
We describe a new method for measuring the true redshift distribution of any set of objects studied only photometrically. The angular cross-correlation between objects in a photometric sample with objects in some spectroscopic sample as a function of the spectroscopic z, in combination with standard correlation measurements, provides sufficient information to reconstruct the true redshift distribution of the photometric sample. This technique enables the robust calibration of photometric redshifts even beyond spectroscopic limits. The spectroscopic sample need not resemble the photometric one …
We present a survey for z~3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) associated with damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) with the primary purpose of determining the DLA-LBG cross-correlation. This paper describes the acquisition and analysis of imaging and spectroscopic data of 9 quasar fields having 11 known z~3 DLAs covering an area of 465 arcmin^2. Using deep u'BVRI images, 796 LBG candidates to an apparent R_AB magnitude of 25.5 were photometrically selected from 17,343 sources detected in the field. Spectroscopic observations of 529 LBG candidates using Keck LRIS yielded 339 redshifts. We have conservat…
Do some Wolf-Rayet stars owe their strong winds to something else besides radiation pressure? The answer to this question is still not entirely obvious, especially in certain Wolf-Rayet subclasses, mainly WN8 and WC9. Both of these types of Wolf-Rayet stars are thought to be highly variable, as suggested by observations, possibly due to pulsations. However, only the WN8 stars have so far been vigorously and systematically investigated for variability. We present here the results of a systematic survey during 3 consecutive weeks of 19 Galactic WC9 stars and 1 WC8 star for photometric variabilit…
We present theoretical predictions for photometric and spectroscopic signatures of rings around transiting extrasolar planets. On the basis of a general formulation for the transiting signature in the stellar light curve and the velocity anomaly due to the Rossiter effect, we compute the expected signals analytically for a face-on ring system, and numerically for more general configurations. We study the detectability of a ring around a transiting planet located at a=3AU for a variety of obliquity and azimuthal angles, and find that it is possible to detect the ring signature both photometrica…
Pluto's two small satellites, temporarily designated S/2005 P 1 and S/2005 P 2, were observed on four dates (15.1 and 18.1 May 2005, 15.7 February 2006, and 2.8 March 2006) using the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Here we collect together the astrometric positions of these two satellites (henceforth P1 and P2), as well as a single color measurement for each satellite and initial constraints on their photometric variability obtained during these observations. We find that both satellites have essentially neutral (grey) reflectivities, like Charon. We also find…
We report CCD photometric monitoring of the nonemission ultracool dwarf BRI 0021-0214 (M9.5) obtained during 10 nights in 1995 November and 4 nights in 1996 August, with CCD cameras at 1 m class telescopes on the observatories of the Canary Islands. We present differential photometry of BRI 0021-0214, and we report significant variability in the I-band light curve obtained in 1995. A periodogram analysis finds a strong peak at a period of 0.84 day. This modulation appears to be transient because it is present in the 1995 data but not in the 1996 data. We also find a possible period of 0.20 day…
We investigate, using simulated galaxy catalogues, the completeness of searches for massive clusters of galaxies in redshift surveys or imaging surveys with photometric redshift estimates, i.e. what fraction of clusters (M>10^14/h Msun) are found in such surveys. We demonstrate that the matched filter method provides an efficient and reliable means of identifying massive clusters even when the redshift estimates are crude. In true redshift surveys the method works extremely well. We demonstrate that it is possible to construct catalogues with high completeness, low contamination and both varyi…
Photometries of B, V, Rc, Ic, y, J, and Ks bands and low dispersion optical spectroscopic observations of Nova V1280 Sco, started soon after the outburst, are reported. We show that V1280 Sco is an Fe II nova and it is going through the historically slowest spectroscopic evolution. The rapid decline observed in the early phase was caused by formation of a dust shell. We estimate the abundances of CNO using the absorption lines on a spectrum at pre-maximum, and find over-abundances by [C/Fe] ~ 1.4, [N/Fe] > 2.0 and [O/Fe] ~ 1.1.
The CNES/European space mission COROT will monitor asteroseismic targets located in selected fields to probe stellar interiors. Therefore, suitable candidate targets have to be searched for in order to optimize the scientific return of the mission. However, to be able to use the asteroseismic tools on the stars, their physical parameters must be known in advance. In this work, we detail the process of building a photometric database of all the stars brighter than V=8.0 mag in the field of view of COROT and the process of selecting suitable delta Scuti and gamma Dor-type stars for the mission.
Deep K' images with 0.1 arcsec angular resolution, obtained with ALTAIR+NIRI on Gemini North, are used to investigate photometric variablity among the brightest asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the central regions of M32. Based on a comparison with brightnesses obtained from the K-band data discussed by Davidge et al. (2000, ApJ, 545, L89), it is concluded that (1) at least 60% of bright AGB stars near the center of M32 are photometrically variable, and (2) the amplitudes of the light variations are similar to those of long period variables in the Galactic bulge. We do not find evidence …
We present a sample of 9 nearby F-type stars with detailed spectroscopic analyses to investigate the Basel Stellar Library (BaSeL) in two photometric systems simultaneously, UBV Johnson and uvby Stromgren. The sample corresponds to potential targets of the central seismology programme of the COROT space experiment, which have been recently observed at Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP, France). The atmospheric parameters Teff, [Fe/H], and log g obtained from the BaSeL models are compared with spectroscopic determinations as well as with results of other photometric calibrations. Moreover, ne…
T Tauri stars exhibit variability on all timescales, whose origin is still debated. On WTTS the variability is fairly simple and attributed to long-lived, ubiquitous cool spots. We investigate the long term variability of WTTS, extending up to 20 years in some cases, characterize it statistically and discuss its implications for our understanding of these stars. We have obtained a unique, homogeneous database of photometric measurements for WTTS extending up to 20 years. It contains more than 9 000 UBV R observations of 48 WTTS. All the data were collected at Mount Maidanak Observatory (Uzbeki…
We investigate the radial dependence of the spectroscopic properties, in particular the Mg2, <Fe> and H beta spectroscopic indices, in a sample of galaxies spanning a wide range of absolute luminosity in the Coma cluster. After allowing for the magnitude dependence of these indices, we find a significant gradient in Mg2, in the sense that galaxies in the core of the cluster have stronger Mg2. We find only weak gradients in <Fe> and H beta. Using the model grids presented in an earlier paper in this series, we attribute the Mg2 gradient to changes in metal abundance. One possible mechanism to c…
We have carried out multi-epoch, time-series differential I-band photometry of a large sample of objects in the south-east region of the young (~3 Myr), nearby (~350 pc) sigma Orionis open cluster. A field of ~1000 arcmin^2 was monitored during four nights over a period of two years. Using this dataset, we have studied the photometric variability of twenty-eight brown dwarf cluster candidates with masses ranging from the stellar-substellar boundary down to the planetary-mass domain. We have found that about 50% of the sample show photometric variability on timescales from less than one hour to…
We present the analysis of simultaneous multicolour $uvyI_{\rm C}$ photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy for the rapidly rotating $β$ Cephei star SY Equ. From the photometric time series, we confirm the dominant pulsation frequency, $f_1$ = 6.029 d$^{-1}$, and we find an evidence for two additional modes. In spectroscopy, the highest peak occurs at $f_{\rm a}$ = 0.197 d$^{-1}$ or its alias 0.803 d$^{-1}$. It can be interpreted either in terms of a binary motion or as the $g$-mode pulsation. In addition, we reveal the pulsation mode with frequency of about 6.029 d$^{-1}$, i.e. the same whi…
The cross-correlation between the ROSAT all-sky survey (~150000 sources) and the Tycho mission (~1000000 stars) catalogs has selected about 14000 stellar X-ray sources (RasTyc sample, Guillout et al. 1999). About 200-300 stars have been spectroscopically observed at high resolution both in the Halpha and LiI lambda-6708 regions with Elodie and Aurelie spectrographs of the OHP (Observatoire de l'Haute Provence, France). The aim was to classify the RasTyc star sample in terms of age and chromospheric activity level and to detect eventual binary systems. Photometric and spectroscopic follow-up ob…
We present high angular resolution observations with the Keck Interferometer, high dispersion spectroscopic observations with Keck/NIRSPEC, and near-IR photometric observations from PAIRITEL of a sample of 11 solar-type T Tauri stars in 9 systems. We use these observations to probe the circumstellar material within 1 AU of these young stars, measuring the circumstellar-to-stellar flux ratios and angular size scales of the 2.2 micron emission. Our sample spans a range of stellar luminosities and mass accretion rates, allowing investigation of potential correlations between inner disk properties…
GD356 is a magnetic white dwarf (B = 13MG) that uniquely displays weak resolved Zeeman triplets of Halpha and Hbeta in emission. As such, GD356 may be the only known white dwarf with some kind of chromosphere, although accretion from the interstellar medium or more exotic mechanisms cannot be ruled out. Here, we report the detection of low amplitude (+/-~0.2%) near-sinusoidal photometric (V-band) variability in GD356, with a period of 0.0803 days (~115 minutes). We interpret this as the rotation period of the star. We model the variability with a dark spot (by analogy with star spots) covering…
We present the results of a photometric CCD monitoring of the gravitational lens system UM 673, that took place from 1995 to 2000. In total, the doubly-imaged quasar was observed in the R-band during 29 photometric nights, using optical telescopes with dimensions in the range 0.6 m to 1.3 m. We detected a significant variability in the total light of the UM 673 system, that is, in the light of the two QSO images plus the lensing galaxy. With respect to the magnitude of the gravitational lens system at its discovery, in 1986, UM 673 was 0.3 magnitude brighter. Furthermore, our December 1996 mea…
We report a photometric and spectroscopic study of the hot extreme helium star LSS 5121. We found photometric variability, but no period was evident in its periodogram. This is consistent with the previous proposal, based on spectral line variations, that LSS 5121 is a non-radial pulsator similar to other hot extreme helium stars.
We present the results of a long-term program of monitoring of the famous SN 1995N, observed both in photometry (UBVRIJHK bands) and optical spectroscopy. The observations span a period of about 9 years. These new data, together with others available in literature, extend from the X-ray wavelengths to the radio, and allow to estimate the total energy radiated by the supernova over a decade after its explosion.
This is the second paper in a series studying the photometric and spectroscopic properties of galaxies of different luminosities in the Coma cluster. The sample selection, spectroscopic observations and completeness functions are presented here. To study the spectral properties of galaxies as a function of their local environment, two fields were selected for spectroscopic observations to cover both the core (Coma1) and outskirts (ie. south-west of the core and centered on NGC4839)- (Coma3) of the cluster. Medium resolution spectroscopy (6-9 Å) was carried out for a total of 490 galaxies in bo…
We present the results of a J, H, and K_s photometric monitoring campaign of a 0.72 x 6 sq deg. area centered on the Chamaeleon I star forming region. Data were obtained on 15 separate nights over a 4 month time interval using the 2MASS South telescope. Out of a total of 34,539 sources brighter than the photometric completeness limits (J=16.0, H=15.2, K_s=14.8), 95 exhibit near-infrared variability in one or more bands. The variables can be grouped into a population of bright, red objects that are associated with the Chamaeleon I association, and a population of faint, blue variables that are …
Results of a blind test of photometric redshift predictions against spectroscopic galaxy redshifts obtained in the Hubble Deep Field with the Keck Telescope are presented. The best photometric redshift schemes predict spectroscopic redshifts with a redshift accuracy of |Delta-z|<0.1 for more than 68 percent of sources and with |Delta-z|<0.3 for 100 percent, when single-feature spectroscopic redshifts are removed from consideration. This test shows that photometric redshift schemes work well at least when the photometric data are of high quality and when the sources are at moderate redshifts.
We present infrared photometry of the Galactic Bulge X-ray binary systems GX13+1 and GX17+2 obtained in 1997 July and August using OSIRIS on the 1.8m Perkins Telescope at Lowell Observatory. GX13+1 clearly varies over ~0.6 magnitudes in the K-band. Our light curve suggests a modulation on a timescale of ~20 days, which is in agreement with previously proposed orbital periods for the system. The IR counterpart of GX17+2 is also variable in the K-band over \~0.8 magnitudes on a timescale of days to weeks, extending the variability first seen by Naylor, Charles, & Longmore (1991). We discuss the …
We present CCD UBVI photometry and high-resolution spectroscopy of the intermediate age open cluster NGC 3960. The colour - magnitude diagrams (CMDs) derived from the photometric data and interpreted with the synthetic CMD method allow us to estimate the cluster parameters. We derive: age = 0.9 or 0.6 Gyr (depending on whether or not overshooting from convective regions is included in the adopted stellar models), distance (m-M)0 = 11.6 +/- 0.1, reddening E(B-V) = 0.29 +/- 0.02, differential reddening Delta E(B-V) = 0.05 and approximate metallicity between solar and half of solar. We obtained h…
We present an analysis of J, H, and K time series photometry obtained with the southern 2MASS telescope over a 0.84 x 6 deg^2 region centered near the Orion Nebula Cluster. These data are used to establish the near-infrared variability properties of pre-main-sequence stars in Orion on time scales of 1-36 days, 2 months, and 2 years. A total of 1235 variable stars are identified, ~93% of which are associated with the Orion A molecular cloud. The variable stars exhibit a diversity of photometric behavior with time, including cyclic fluctuations, aperiodic day-to-day fluctuations, eclipses, slow …
We observed a large sample of B & Be stars in the Magellanic Clouds, respectively 176 and 344 stars, with the multi-object spectrograph GIRAFFE at ESO/VLT. We obtained spectra at different settings at various epochs. It allowed us to discover several spectroscopic binaries with short and intermediate periods. By cross-correlation in coordinates with the MACHO database, we found the light-curves for 350 stars in our samples. Among them, 19 (14 new) are photometric binaries (5 in the LMC, 14 in the SMC). Among these 19 photometric binaries 6 are also spectroscopic binaries (5 in the LMC, 1 in th…
Local-box hydrodynamical model atmospheres provide statistical information about the spatial dependence, as well as temporal evolution, of a star's emergent radiation field. Here, we consider late-type stellar atmospheres for which temporal changes of the radiative output are primarily related to convective (granular) surface flows. We derived relations for evaluating the granulation-induced, disk-integrated thus observable fluctuations of the stellar brightness and location of the photocenter from radiation intensities available from a local model. Apart from their application in the context …
We reported the result of long term optical variability of the blazar 4C 29.45 (QSO 1156+295, Ton 599), carried out optical photometric observations in Johnson V, Cousins RI passbands during April 1997 to March 2002 using the 1.56 meter telescope of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) at Sheshan, China, compiled the post-1974 optical photometric data of the blazar by combining our new observations with the published optical data, and found maximum variations in different passbands: $Δ$U = 4.41 mag, $Δ$B = 5.55 mag, $Δ$V = 4.53 mag, $Δ$R = 5.80 mag, and $Δ$I = 5.34 mag. The average col…
