We show how the partition function of a network of parallel superconducting wires weakly coupled together by the proximity effect, subjected a vector potential along the wires can be mapped onto N-distinguishable two dimensional quantum-mechanics problem with a perpendicular imaginary magnetic field. Then, we show, using a mean field approximation, that, for a given coupling, there is a critical temperature for onset of inter-wire phase coherence. The transition temperature $T_c$ is plotted on both cases for non-magnetic and a magnetic field perpendicular to the wires.
Steady state propagation of a magnetic perturbation along a monofilament superconducting wire in circumstances of thermomagnetic instability was investigated. At temperature T=4.2K and magnetic field B=0.5-0.7T the propagation velocity is v = 2.5 - 3.5 km/sec in NbTi wire and this one exceeds a 9 km/sec in NbZr wire.
Enhancements of superconducting properties were observed in FeSe wires using a quenching technique. Zero resistivity was achieved at about 10 K in quenched wires, which is about 2 K higher than that of polycrystalline FeSe bulk. Furthermore, transport Jc of quenched wires showed three times higher than that of furnace-cooled wires. In contrast, the quenched polycrystalline FeSe bulks did not show the enhancement of Tc. The quenching technique is a greatly promising for fabricating FeSe wires with high Tc and high Jc, and quenched FeSe wires have high potential for superconducting wire applicat…
The suppression of the mean field temperature of the superconducting transition, $T_c$, in homogeneous amorphous wires is studied. We develop a theory that gives $T_c$ in situations when the dynamically enhanced Coulomb repulsion competes with the contact attraction. The theory accurately describes recent experiments on $T_c$--suppression in superconducting wires, after a procedure that minimizes the role of nonuniversal mechanisms influencing $T_c$ is applied.
We have fabricated (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires through ex-situ powder-in-tube method. Silver was used as a chemical addition to improve the performance of these superconducting wires. The transport critical current densities (Jc) have reached 1.3\times104 A/cm and 1.0\times104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K under self field in the wires with and without Ag addition. We used magneto-optical (MO) imaging technique to investigate the properties of grain boundaries in the (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wire with Ag addition. MO images show the weak links in the Fe-based superconducting wires for the first ti…
We calculate analytically the spectrum of the Andreev bound states in a half-infinite superconducting wire with an arbitrary number of bands crossing the chemical potential. The normal state of the wire is assumed to have an antiunitary symmetry A (time reversal or its combination with a crystallographic point group operation), with A^2=-1 or +1. This symmetry may be broken by the superconducting order parameter and/or the boundary scattering. We present a model-independent proof of the existence of one Majorana mode near the end of the wire with an odd number of bands.
Magnetic measurements carried out on MgB_2 superconducting round wires have shown that the critical current density J_c(B_a) in wires sheathed by iron can be significantly higher than that in the same bare (unsheathed) wires over a wide applied magnetic field B_a range. The magnetic behavior is, however, strongly dependent on the magnetic history of the sheathed wires, as well as on the wire orientation with respect to the direction of the applied field. The behavior observed can be explained by magnetic interaction between the soft magnetic sheath and superconducting core, which can result in…
We demonstrate experimentally that the critical current in superconducting NbTiN wires is dependent on their geometrical shape, due to current-crowding effects. Geometric patterns such as 90 degree corners and sudden expansions of wire width are shown to result in the reduction of critical currents. The results are relevant for single-photon detectors as well as parametric amplifiers.
We demonstrate the fabrication of superconducting SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm-1111) wires by using the ex-situ powder-in-tube technique. Sm-1111 powder and a binder composed of SmF3, samarium arsenide, and iron arsenide were used to synthesize the superconducting core. Although the F content of Sm-1111 is reduced in the process of ex-situ fabrication, the binder compensates by sufficiently supplementing the F content, thereby preventing a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature and a shrinking of the superconducting volume fraction. Thus, in the superconducting Sm-1111 wire with the binder…
We have fabricated the Fe(Se, Te) superconducting wire by a special process based on a powder-in-tube method. The pure Fe tube plays the role of not only the sheath but also the raw material for synthesizing the superconducting phases. We succeeded in observing zero resistivity current on the current-voltage measurements for the Fe(Se, Te) wire. Introduction of the pinning centers and fabricating a multi-core wire will enhance the critical current density for the next step.
We fabricated FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires using ex-situ Powder-in-tube method with an Fe sheath. It was amazing that superconducting current was observed in the as-drawn wire without any heat treatments. By heat treatment at 200C for 2 hours, Tczero and Jc at 4.2 K were enhanced up to 9.1 K and 64.1 A/cm2 (Ic = 182.6 mA), respectively. Furthermore, the Jc of FeTe0.5Se0.5 wire heat treated at 200C for 2 hours was not much sensitive to the applied magnetic fields. Therefore, FeTe0.5Se0.5 wires have a great potential for applications.
Intrinsic and extrinsic defects play an important role in training and degradation of superconducting wires and magnets. Various defects along with experimental data regarding the hierarchy of defects have been presented. Duxbury-Leath model of inverse worst defect cluster has been hypothesized to explain the statistical nature of the phenomenon. `Loss of memory' in the case of training has been explained for the first time.
Seven-core Ag/Fe sheathed Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) superconducting wires were produced by the ex situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The relationship between the cold-work deformation process and the superconducting properties of wires were systematically studied. It was found that flat rolling can efficiently increase the density of the superconducting core and largely improve the transport critical current density (Jc) of as-drawn wires. The Jc of the best sample achieved 21.1 kA/cm^2 at 4.2 K in self field, and showed very weak magnetic field dependence in high fields. Our result suggested a …
FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconducting wires have been fabricated using ex-situ PIT method with an Fe sheath. Among the other FeAs-based superconductor, FeTe0.5Se0.5 has great advantage for application due to binary composition and less toxic. Surprisingly, superconducting current was observed in the as-fabricated wire without any heat treatments. Zero resistivity and transport critical current density (Jc) were 3.2 K and 2.8 A/cm2, respectively. In addition, by annealing at 200 degC for 2 h, critical temperature Tczero and Jc were enhanced up to 9.1 K, and 64.1 A/cm2, respectively. This suggests that t…
We report successful fabrication of multi- and mono-core FeSe wires with high transport critical current density Jc using a simple in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The seven-core wire showed transport Jc of as high as 1027 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The superconducting transition temperature Tczero was observed at 10.5 K in the wire-samples, which is about 2 K higher than that of bulk FeSe. The Fe-diffusion PIT method is suitable for fabricating multi-core wires of the binary FeSe superconductors with superior properties.
We report large transport critical current densities observed in Ag-added (Ba,K)Fe2As2 superconducting wires prepared by an ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) process. The wire has a simple composite structure sheathed only by Ag. A precursor bulk material prepared by a melting process was ground into powder and put into a Ag tube. The composite was then cold worked into a wire and heat treated at 850$^\circ$C for sintering. Transport critical current densities, Jc, at 4.2 K are 1.0\times104 A/cm2 (Ic = 60.7 A) in self field and 1.1\times103 A/cm2 (Ic = 6.6 A) in 10 T. These are the highest values r…
We discuss experimental results obtained using a tunable cylindrical coaxial cavity constituted by an outer Cu cylinder and an inner Pb-BSCCO wire. We have used this device for investigating the microwave response of the superconducting wire, both in the linear and nonlinear regimes. In particular, by tuning the different modes of the cavity to make them resonant at exactly harmonic frequencies, we have detected the power emitted by the superconducting inner wire at the second- and third-harmonic frequency of the driving field. The results obtained in the nonlinear regime, whether for the micr…
We theoretically investigate the physical mechanism of the screening-current-induced field (SCIF) in solenoid coils wound with superconducting tape wires. We derive the direct relationship between the SCIF and the magnetization of tape wires, and a scaling law for the SCIF and the coil dimensions is demonstrated. A simple analytical expression of the SCIF is obtained as functions of current load factor, tape wire width, and the coil dimensions. We verify that the published data for the precise numerical computation of SCIF are roughly fitted by our theoretical results for flat coils where the …
MgB2 hollow wires have been produced with a new technique which uses a conventional wire manufacturing process but is applied to composite billets containing the elemental B and Mg precursors in an appropriate shape. The technique has been applied to the manufacture of both monofilamentary and multifilamentary wires of several tens meters length. The superconducting transport properties of the MgB2 hollow wires have been measured in magnetic field and in the temperature range from 4.2 to 30 K. Promising results are obtained, which indicate the possibility of application of these wires as super…
The effect of negative magnetoresistance for thin superconducting wire was considered in a simple model. These phenomena originated from competition of two mechanism: fluctuations of the order parameter and quasiparticles charge imbalance which accompanies each phase slip event. First process results in conventional positive magnetoresistance while the second mechanism gives the negative contributions. Simple analytical formula is obtained for the negative magnetic resistance caused by both the thermodynamics (TAPS) and quantum fluctuations. Theoretical results are compared with experimental d…
We calculate the density of states (DOS) in a clean mesoscopic d-wave superconducting quantum wire, i.e. a sample of infinite length but finite width $N$. For open boundary conditions, the DOS at zero energy is found to be zero if $N$ is even, and nonzero if $N$ is odd. At finite chemical potential, all chains are gapped but the qualtitative differences between even and odd $N$ remain.
Local magneto-optical imaging and global magnetization measurement techniques were used in order to visualize shielding effects in the superconducting core of MgB_2 wires sheathed by ferromagnetic iron (Fe). The magnetic shielding can provide a Meissner-like state in the superconducting core in applied magnetic fields up to ~1T. The maximum shielding fields are shown to correlate with the saturation fields of magnetization in Fe-sheaths. The shielding has been found to facilitate the appearance of an overcritical state, which is capable of achieving a critical current density (J_c) in the core…
Hybrid magnetic arrays embedded in superconducting films are ideal systems to study the competition between different physical (such as the coherence length) and structural length scales such as available in artificially produced structures. This interplay leads to oscillation in many magnetically dependent superconducting properties such as the critical currents, resistivity and magnetization. These effects are generally analyzed using two distinct models based on vortex pinning or wire network. In this work, we show that for magnetic dot arrays, as opposed to antidot (i.e holes) arrays, vort…
Superconducting FeSe in the form of wires and tapes were successfully fabricated using a novel gas diffusion procedure. Structural analysis by mean of x-ray diffraction shows that themain phase of tetragonal PbO-type FeSe was obtained by this synthesis method. The zero resistivity transition temperature of the FeSe was confirmed to be 9.3 K. The critical current density as high as 137 A/cm^2 (4 K, self field) has been observed. The results suggest that the diffusion procedure is promising in preparing high-quality FeSe wires and tapes.
An electric current generates a magnetic field, and magnetic fields cannot exist in the interior of type I superconductors. As a consequence of these two facts, electric currents can only flow near the surface of a type I superconducting wire so that the self-field vanishes in the interior. Here we examine how an electric current flowing through the entire cross-section of a normal conducting wire becomes a surface current when it enters a superconducting portion of the wire. This geometry provides insight into the dynamics of magnetic flux expulsion that is not apparent in the Meissner effect…
The "d-wave" symmetry of the superconducting order in the cuprate high temperature superconductors is a well established fact, and one which identifies them as "unconventional." However, in macroscopic contexts -- including many potential applications ({\it i.e.} superconducting "wires") -- the material is a composite of randomly oriented superconducting grains in a metallic matrix, in which Josephson coupling between grains mediates the onset of long-range phase coherence. Here, we analyze the physics at length scales large compared to the size of such grains, and in particular the macroscopi…
We fabricated single- and 3-core superconducting Fe-Se wires using a novel process based on a chemical transformation from hexagonal FeSe1+d (non-superconducting) to tetragonal FeSe (superconducting) via an optimal supply of Fe from the Fe sheath by annealing. This process enhanced a packing density of superconducting core inside the sheath, owing to an expansion of the lattice volume via a chemical transformation from high-density hexagonal FeSe1+d to low-density tetragonal FeSe. The obtained superconducting wire showed superconductivity below ~10 K and the upper critical field was estimated …
Thorough spectral study of the intrinsic single-photon detection efficiency in superconducting TaN and NbN nanowires with different widths shows that the experimental cut-off in the efficiency at near-infrared wavelengths is most likely caused by the local deficiency of Cooper pairs available for current transport. For both materials the reciprocal cut-off wavelength scales with the wire width whereas the scaling factor quantitatively agrees with the hot-spot detection models. Comparison of the experimental data with vortex-assisted detection scenarios shows that these models predict a stronge…
We measure resistively the mean-field superconducting-normal phase boundaries of both kagome and honeycomb wire networks immersed in a transverse magnetic field. In addition to their agreement with theory about the overall shapes of phase diagrams, they show striking one-to-one correspondence between the cusps in the honeycomb and kagome phase boundaries. This correspondence is due to their geometric arrangements and agrees with Lin and Nori's recent calculation. We also find that for the frustrated honeycomb network at f=1/2, the current patterns in the superconducting phase differ between th…
Although the F content of Sm-1111 is reduced in the process of ex-situ fabrication, the binder compensates by sufficiently supplementing the F content, thereby preventing a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature and a shrinkage of the superconducting volume fraction. Thus, in the superconducting Sm-1111 wire with the binder…
It has previously been found that a magnetic impurity in a conventional $s$-wave superconductor can give rise to a local $π$-phase shift of the superconducting order parameter. By studying a finite wire of ferromagnetic impurities, we are able to trace the origin of the $π$-phase shift to a resonance condition for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticle states. When non-resonating states localized at the impurity sites are pulled into the condensate for increasing magnetic strength, the superconducting order parameter is reduced in discrete steps, eventually resulting in a $π$-phase shift. We a…
Monofilamentary MgB2-wires with a mechanical tough Nb/Cu/steel or Fe/steel sheath were prepared and characterized. The steel content was varied to investigate the reinforcement effect and the consequences for the superconducting properties of the wires, which were heat treated to achieve dense and homogeneous filaments. The use of Nb as first sheath layer, having a smaller thermal expansion coefficient than MgB2, requires the application of higher amounts of steel to achieve compressive pre-stress on the filament in comparison to Fe as first wall material. With raised steel content in the shea…
After an initial transient period, the conduction regime in a 1D superconducting wire that carries a fixed current is either normal or periodic or stationary. The phase diagram for these possibilities was studied in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99}, 167003 (2007) for particular values of the length and the material parameters. We have extended this study to arbitrary length and to a range of material parameters that includes realistic values. Variation of the length leads to scaling laws for the phase diagram. Variation of the material parameters leads to new qualitative features and new phases, incl…
We investigate the coupling between the magnetic and superconducting order parameters in an 8 m long meander line ("wire") made of a La1.94Sr0.06CuO4 film with a cross section of 0.5 x 100 um^2. The magnetic order parameter is determined using the Low-Energy muon spin relaxation technique. The superconducting order parameter is characterized by transport measurements and modified by high current density. We find that, when the superconducting order parameter is suppressed by the current, the magnetic transition temperature, Tm, increases. The extracted sign and magnitude of the Ginzburg-Landau…
We consider structure of a thermal phase-slip center for a simple microscopic model of a clean one-dimensional superconductors in which superconductivity occurs only within one conducting channel or several identical channels. Surprisingly, the Eilenberger equations describing the saddle-point configuration allow for exact analytical solution in the whole temperature and current range. This solution allows us to derive a closed expression for the free-energy barrier, which we use to compute its temperature and current dependences.
Quantum phase slips have received much attention due to their relevance to superfluids in reduced dimensions and to models of cosmic string production in the Early Universe. Their establishment in one-dimensional superconductors has remained controversial. Here we study the nonlinear voltage-current characteristics and linear resistance in long superconducting Al wires with lateral dimensions $\sim$ 5 nm. We find that, in a magnetic field and at temperatures well below the superconducting transition, the observed behaviors can be described by the non-classical, macroscopic quantum tunneling of…
We reply to the recent Comment [cond-mat/9702231] by J.-M. Duan. Our point of view is markedly different on every issue raised. Much of the disagreement can be traced to a different preception of experimentally relevant length scales. i) We explain the difference between our formulation, which rests on a microscopic basis, and the phenomenological one of the author. ii) Our renormalization scheme is fundamentally right, as the "log(log)" interaction appears only in wires of astronomical lengths. iii) The tunneling barrier is profoundly reduced by the kinetic inductance. iv) We do make an appro…
We study the screening of the Coulomb interaction in a quasi one-dimensional superconductor given by the presence of either a one- or a two-dimensional non-interacting electron gas. To that end, we derive an effective low-energy phase-only action, which amounts to treating the Coulomb and superconducting correlations in the random-phase approximation. We concentrate on the study of dissipation effects in the superconductor, induced by the effect of Coulomb coupling to the diffusive density-modes in the metal, and study its consequences on the static and dynamic conductivity. Our results point …
We present measurements obtained on a bulk cylinder of lead with a SQUID picovoltmeter. A distinctive hysteretic step structure is observed. It is washed out on increasing the current and reinforced in higher field. Classical models for the dissipation mechanisms in the intermediate state are briefly reviewed and used to give a first interpretation of these results, although a complete understanding is not reached yet.
This paper reviews the highlights of a 4-years-long research project supported by the Japanese Government to explore new superconducting materials and relevant functional materials. The project found several tens of new superconductors by examining ~1000 materials, each of which was chosen by Japanese team member experts with a background in solid state chemistry. This review summarizes the major achievements of the project in newly found superconducting materials, and the wire and tape fabrication of iron-based superconductors. It is a unique feature of this review to incorporate a list of ~7…
We report the fabrication of small (Ba,A)Fe2As2 (A: Na, K) coils using 10 m-class long round wires, fabricated by powder-in-tube (PIT) method. Coils are sintered using hot-isostatic-press (HIP) technique after glass-fiber insulations are installed. Critical current (Ic) of the whole coil using (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 and (Ba,K)Fe2As2 are 60 A and 66 A under the self-field, and the generated magnetic fields at the center of the coil reach 2.6 kOe and 2.5 kOe, respectively. Furthermore, the largest transport critical current density (Jc) and Ic in (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 wires picked up from the coil reach 54 kAcm-…
The powder in tube method has been used to fabricate Ag and Cu clad MgB2 wires using an in-situ reaction method. The effects of short time sintering on the critical current densities of Ag and Cu clad MgB2 wires were studied. All the samples were examined using XRD, SEM, and magnetization measurements. For Ag clad wire Jc is improved by more than two times after the short time sintering process. Jc values of 1.2x10^5 A/cm2 in zero field and above 10^4 A/cm2 in 2T at 20 K have been achieved for Ag clad MgB2 wire which is only sintered for 6 minutes at 800oC. However, a remarkable degree of reac…
We have fabricated a series of iron-sheathed superconducting wires prepared by the powder-in-tube technique from (MgB_2)_{1-x}:(Mg+2B)_x initial powder mixtures taken with different proportions, so that x varies from 0 to 1. It turned out that "ex-situ" prepared wire (x = 0) has considerable disadvantages compared to all the other wires in which "in-situ" assisted (0 < x < 1) or pure "in-situ" (x = 1) preparation was used due to weaker inter-grain connectivity. As a result, higher critical current densities J_c were measured over the entire range of applied magnetic fields B_a for all the samp…
We find that the dependence on temperature and magnetic field of the electrical resistance of diffusive ferromagnetic nano-wires measured with superconducting electrodes changes drastically with the distance, $L$, between the ferromagnet/superconductor contacts, however is remarkably similar for the wires with the same $L$ ranging from 300 nm to 1000 nm, prepared under identical conditions. The result gives an evidence for the long-range superconductor-induced changes in transport properties of ferromagnetic nano-wires.
Superconducting properties of metallic nano-wires may strongly depend on specific experimental conditions. Here we consider a setup where superconducting phase fluctuations are restricted at one point inside the wire and equilibrium supercurrent flows along the wire segment of an arbitrary length $L$. Low temperature physics of this structure is essentially determined, on one hand, by smooth phase fluctuations and, on the other hand, by quantum phase slips. The zero temperature phase diagram is controlled by the wire cross section and consists of a truly superconducting phase and two different…
The superconducting state in a fully frustrated wire network with the dice lattice geometry is investigated in the vicinity of the transition temperature. Using Abrikosov's variational procedure, we write the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional projected on its unstable supspace as an effective model on the triangular lattice of sixfold coordinated sites. For this latter model, we obtain a large class of degenerate equilibrium configurations in one to one correspondence with those previously constructed for the pure XY model on the maximally frustrated dice lattice. The entropy of these sta…
We report conductance and supercurrent measurements for InAs single and parallel double quantum dot Josephson junctions contacted with Nb or NbTiN superconducting electrodes. Large superconducting gap energy, high critical field and large switching current are observed, all reflecting the features of Nb-based electrodes. For the parallel double dots we observe an enhanced supercurrent when both dots are on resonance, which may reflect split Cooper pair tunneling.
We have studied niobium superconducting thin wires deposited onto a SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate. By measuring the reflection coefficient of the wires, resonances are observed in the superconducting state in the 130 MHz to 4 GHz range. They are interpreted as standing wave resonances of one-dimensional plasma modes propagating along the superconducting wire. The experimental dispersion law, $ω$ versus $q$, presents a linear dependence over the entire wave vector range. The modes are softened as the temperature increases close the superconducting transition temperature. Very good agreement are observe…
Transport critical current (Ic) was measured for MgB2/Fe round wires, with magnetic field oriented perpendicular to the wire and parallel to it. Measurements were made on a wire with pure MgB2 core and another wire where MgB2 core was doped with nano-size SiC. This doping strongly improved the vortex pinning in MgB2. The field dependence of Ic was strongly improved due to the presence of the iron sheath. At 30K, Ic did not depend on the field for fields between 0.09 and 0.7T. At lower temperatures, Ic increased with the field, after initial decrease, resembling a "peak effect". This effect was…
The development of the PIT fabrication process of iron pnictide superconducting wires and tapes has been carried out in order to enhance their transport properties. Silver was found to be the best sheath material, since no reaction layer was observed between the silver sheath and the superconducting core. The grain connectivity of iron pnictide wires and tapes has been markedly improved by employing Ag or Pb as dopants. At present, critical current densities in excess of 3750 A/cm^2 (Ic = 37.5 A) at 4.2 K have been achieved on Ag-sheathed SrKFeAs wires prepared with the above techniques, which…
In classical XY kagome antiferromagnets, there can be a novel low temperature phase where $ψ^3=e^{i3θ}$ has quasi-long-range order but $ψ$ is disordered, as well as more conventional antiferromagnetic phases where $ψ$ is ordered in various possible patterns ($θ$ is the angle of orientation of the spin). To investigate when these phases exist in a physical system, we study superconducting kagome wire networks in a transverse magnetic field when the magnetic flux through an elementary triangle is a half of a flux quantum. Within Ginzburg-Landau theory, we calculate the helicity moduli of each ph…
We report here that magnetic fields of almost 34 T, far above the upper 24 T limit of Nb3Sn, can be generated using a multifilament round wire conductor made of the high temperature cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-x (Bi-2212). A remarkable attribute of this Bi-2212 conductor is that it does not exhibit macroscopic texture and contains many high angle grain boundaries but nevertheless attains very high superconducting critical current densities Jc of 2500 A/mm2 at 20 T and 4.2 K. This Bi-2212 conductor does not possess the extreme texture that high Jc coated conductors of REBa2Cu3O7-x (REB…
In one dimensional wires, fluctuations destroy superconducting long-range order and stiffness at finite temperatures; in an infinite wire, quasi-long range order and stiffness survive at zero temperature if the wire's dimensionless admittance $μ$ is large, $μ> 2$. We analyze the disappearance of this superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition in a finite wire and its resurrection due to the wire's coupling to its environment characterized through the dimensionless conductance $K$. Integrating over phase slips, we determine the flow of couplings and establish the $μ$--$K$ phase diagram.
We present the results from an experimental study of the magneto-transport of superconducting wires of amorphous Indium-Oxide, having widths in the range 40 - 120 nm. We find that, below the superconducting transition temperature, the wires exhibit clear, reproducible, oscillations in their resistance as a function of magnetic field. The oscillations are reminiscent of those which underlie the operation of a superconducting quantum interference device.
Spontaneous nucleation and the consequent penetration of vortices into thin superconducting films and wires, subjected to a magnetic field, can be considered as a nonlinear stage of primary instability of the current-carrying superconducting state. The development of the instability leads to the formation of a chain of vortices in strips and helicoidal vortex lines in wires. The boundary of instability was obtained analytically. The nonlinear stage was investigated by simulations of the time-dependent generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation.
We consider the Ginzburg-Landau model, confined in an infinitely long rectangular wire of cross-section $L_{1}\times L_{2}$. Our approach is based on the Gaussian effective potential in the transverse unitarity gauge, which allows to treat gauge contributions in a compact form. The contributions from the scalar self-interaction and from the gauge fluctuations are clearly identified. Using techniques from dimensional and $zeta$-function regularizations, modified by the confinement conditions, we investigate the critical temperature for a wire of transverse dimensions $L_1$, $L_2$. Taking the ma…
We study how turns and constrictions affect the resistive response of the superconducting wire after instant in time and local in space heating, which models the absorption of the single photon by the wire. We find that the presence of constriction favors detection of photons of various energies but the presence of turn increases only ability to detect relatively "low" energy photons. The main reason is that in case of constriction the current density is increased over whole length and width of the constriction while in case of the turn the current density is enhanced only near the inner corne…
