We evaluate the tunneling conductance of clean Ferromomagnet/Superconductor junctions via a fully self-consistent numerical solution of the microscopic Bogoliubov-DeGennes equations. We present results for a relevant range of values of the Fermi wavevector mismatch (FWM), the spin polarization, and the interfacial scattering strength. For nonzero spin polarization, the conductance curves vary nonmonotonically with FWM. The FWM dependence of the self-consistent results is stronger than that previously found in non-self-consistent calculations, since, in the self-consistent case, the effective scattering potential near the interface depends on the FWM. The dependence on interfacial scattering is monotonic. These results confirm that it is impossible to characterize both the the FWM and the interfacial scattering by a single effective parameter and that analysis of experimental data via the use of such one-parameter models is unreliable.
We show that in contrast to conventional normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) junctions, the tunneling conductance of a NIS junction in graphene is an oscillatory function of the effective barrier strength of the insulating region, in the limit of a thin barrier. The amplitude of these oscillations are maximum for aligned Fermi surfaces of the normal and superconducting regions and vanishes for large Fermi surface mismatch. The zero-bias tunneling conductance, in sharp contrast to its counterpart in conventional NIS junctions, becomes maximum for a finite barrier strength. We also sugge…
Based on the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism, the tunneling conductance characteristics of a planar junction between a ferromagnet and a noncentrosymmetric superconductor are studied. The effects of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), the exchange energy, and the Fermi wave-vector mismatch (FWM) on the conductance are all taken into account. In the absence of the FWM, it is found that far away from the gap edge the conductance is suppressed by the RSOC, while around the gap edge it is almost independent of RSOC. The interplay of the RSOC and the exchange energy causes an enhance…
We establish in a combination of ab initio theory and experiments that the tunneling process in scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy on the A-122 iron pnictide superconductors - in this case BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ - involve a strong adatom filtering of the differential conductance from the near-EF Fe3d states, which in turn originates from the top-most sub-surface Fe layer of the crystal. The calculations show that the dominance of surface Ba-related tunneling pathways leaves fingerprints found in the experimental differential conductance data, including large particle-hole asymmetry a…
The tunneling conductance between a metal and a multiband s-wave superconductor with a thin layer of single-band s-wave superconductor sandwiched in between is examined in this paper. We show that an in-gap peak in conductance curve is found as a result of the formation of in-gap bound state between the single-band and multiband superconductor junctions if the phases of the superconducting order parameters of the multiband superconductor are frustrated. The implication of this result in determining the gap symmetry of the iron-based superconductors is discussed.
A theory of tunneling conductance spectra for normal metal/insulator/Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ junction is studied theoretically. We assume several types of pair potentials with triplet symmetries that are promising candidates for Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The calculated conductance spectra show either zero bias peaks or gap like structures depending on the orientations of the junctions. The existence of a residual components in the gap reflects a non-unitary property of the superconducting states. Based on the calculation of a temperature dependence, we will verify that the measurement temperature below 100…
We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a normal metal / insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor we assume one special p-wave order parameter having line nodes and two two dimensional $f$-wave order parameters with line nodes breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The tunneling peaks are due to the formation of bound states for each surface orientation at discrete quasiparticles trajectory angles. The tunneling spectra can be used to di…
Tunneling conductance spectra of normal metal/insulator/triplet superconductor junctions are investigated theoretically. As triplet paring states we select several types of symmetries that are promising candidates for the superconducting states in UPt$_{3}$ and in Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$. The calculated conductance spectra are sensitive to the orientation of the junction which reflects the anisotropy of the pairing states. They show either zero-bias conductance peaks or gap-like structures depending on the orientation of the junctions. The existence of a residual density of states, peculiar to nonun…
We develop a theory of the tunneling spectroscopy for superconducting topological insulators (STIs), where the surface Andreev bound states (SABSs) appear as helical Majorana fermions. Based on the symmetry and topological nature of parent topological insulators, we find that the SABSs in the STIs have a profound structural transition in the energy dispersions. The transition results in a variety of Majorana fermions, by tuning the chemical potential and the effective mass of the energy band. We clarify that Majorana fermions in the vicinity of the transitions give rise to robust zero bias pea…
Tunneling conductance spectra between a normal metal / d-wave superconductor junction under the presence of bulk impurities in the superconductor are studied. The quasiclassical theory has been applied to calculate the spatial variation of the pair potential and the effect of impurity scattering has been introduced by t-matrix approximation. The magnitude of a subdominant s-wave component at the interface is shown to robust against the impurity scattering while that for a subdominant $d_{xy}$-wave component is largely suppressed with the increase of the impurity scattering rate. The zero-bias …
The Andreev reflection probability for a ferromagnet/isolator/superconductor (FIS) contact at the arbitrary spin-dependent amplitudes of the electron waves transmitted through and reflected from the potential barrier is found. It is shown that Andreev reflection probabilities of electron and hole excitations in the FIS contact are different. The energy levels of Andreev bound states are found. The ballistic conductance of the point FIS contact is calculated.
We report an anomalous tunneling conductance with a zero bias peak in flakes of superconducting 2H-TaS$_2$ detached through mechanical exfoliation. To explain the observed phenomenon, we construct a minimal model for a single unit cell layer of superconducting 2H-TaS$_2$ with a simplified 2D Fermi surface and sign-changing Cooper pair wavefunction induced by Coulomb repulsion. Superconductivity is induced in the central $Γ$ pocket, where it becomes nodal. We show that weak scattering at the nodal Fermi surface, produced by non-perturbative coupling between tip and sample, gives Andreev states …
We investigate the conductance spectra of a normal/superconductor graphene junction using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism, considering pairing potentials that are both conventional (isotropic s-wave) and unconventional (anisotropic d-wave). In particular, we study the full crossover from normal to specular Andreev reflection without restricting ourselves to special limits and approximations, thus expanding results obtained in previous work. In addition, we investigate in detail how the conductance spectra are affected if it is possible to induce an unconventional pairing symmet…
The influence of phase shifts of electron waves passing through and reflected by the potential barrier on the Andreev reflection in a ferromagnet/isolator/d-wave superconductor (FIS) contact is studied. It is found that in a superconductor the surface spin-dependent Andreev bound states inside the superconducting gap are formed as a result of the interference of electron-like and hole-like quasiparticles due to repeated Andreev reflections. The peak in the conductance of the FIS contact at the zero potential for the (110)-oriented superconductor disappears rapidly as the polarization of a ferr…
It is known that in the two-dimensional disordered superconductors electron-electron interactions in the Cooper channel lead to the negative logarithmic in temperature correction to the tunneling conductance above the critical temperature. Physically this result appears due to the density of states suppression by superconductive fluctuations near the Fermi level. It is interesting that the other correction, which accounts for the Maki-Thompson-type interaction of fluctuations, is positive and exhibits strong power law, which dominates the logarithmic term in the immediate vicinity of the criti…
Effects of impurity scattering on tunneling conductance in dirty normal-metal/insulator/superconductor junctions are studied based on the Kubo formula and the recursive Green function method. The zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) is a consequence of the unconventional pairing symmetry in superconductors. The impurity scattering in normal metals suppresses the amplitude of the ZBCP. The degree of the suppression agrees well with results of the quasiclassical Green function theory. When superconductors have $d$+is-wave pairing symmetry, the time-reversal symmetry is broken in superconductors and…
The tunneling conductance spectra of a normal metal / insulator / singlet superconductor is calculated from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation. The pairing symmetry of the superconductor is assumed to be $d_{x^2-y^2}+is$, or $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$. It is found that in the ($d_{x^2-y^2}+is$)-wave case there is a well defined conductance peak in the conductance spectra, in the amplitude of the secondary s-wave component. In the ($d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$)-wave case the tunneling conductance has residual values within the gap, due to the formation of bound s…
The influence of the spin-dependent phase shifts (SDPS) associated to the electronic reflection and transmission amplitudes acquired by electrons upon scattering on the potential barrier on the Andreev reflection probability of electron and hole excitations for a ferromagnet/isolator/d-wave superconductor (FIS) contact and the charge conductance of the FIS contact is studied. Various superconductor orientations are considered. It is found that SDPS can suppress the zero-potential peak and restore finite-potential peaks in the charge conductance of the F/I/d-wave superconductor contact for the …
Helical edge states exist in the mixed spin-singlet and spin-triplet phase of a noncentrosymmetric (NCS) superconductor. In this article we have considered a planar ferromagnetic metal/NCS superconductor tunnel junction and have studied the effect of these helical edge states which manifests itself through the charge and spin tunneling conductance across the junction. We have shown the behavior of conductances for the entire range of variation of $γ= Δ_-/Δ_+$ where $Δ_\pm$ are the order parameters in the positive and negative helicity bands of the NCS superconductor. There exists a competition …
We study the point-contact tunneling between normal metal and ferromagnetic superconductor. In the case of magnon-induced pairing the tunneling conductance is continuous and smooth function of the applied voltage. For small values of the applied voltage the Ohm law holds. We show that one can obtain the magnetization and the superconducting order parameter from the tunneling conduc- tance. In the case of paramagnon-induced superconductivity the tunneling does not depend on the magnetization. We argue that tunneling experiment can unambiguously determine the correct pairing mechanism in the fer…
Conductance-voltage characteristics (CVCs) for non-symmetric tunnel junctions between $d$-wave superconductors with charge-density waves (CDWs) and normal metals were calculated. It was shown that they have a V-like form at small voltages $V$ and are asymmetric at larger $V$ owing to the presence of CDW peak in one of the $V$-branches. The spatial scatter of the dielectric (CDW) order parameter smears the CDW peak into a hump and induces a peak-dip-hump structure (PDHS) typical of CVCs observed for such junctions. At temperatures larger than the superconducting critical temperature, the PDHS e…
In the systems ferromagnet/superconductor ([Fe, Ni]/In), the temperature dependent transport has been investigated within the temperature range including superconducting transition temperature for Indium. It has been found that when Indium becomes superconducting, the system resistance acquires two positive additions. The first, numerically equal to the resistance of a ferromagnet part, of order of a spin--polarized region in length, corresponds to the manifestation of "spin accumulation" effect. The second agrees in magnitude with an interference reduction in the ferromagnet conductance over …
In the present work we calculate the theoretical tunneling conductance curves of SIN junctions involving high-Tc superconductors, for different possible symmetries of the order parameter (s, d, s+id, s+d, anisotropic s and extended s). To do so, we solve the real-axis Eliashberg equations in the case of an half-filled infinite band. We show that some of the peculiar characteristics of HTSC tunneling curves (dip and hump at eV > Delta, broadening of the gap peak, zero bias and so on) can be explained in the framework of the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. The theoretical dI/dV curves calculated for t…
A method to identify the parity of unconventional superconductors is proposed based on tunneling spectroscopy. For a model of calculation, we adopt a ferromagnet/superconductor (F/S) junction of which tunneling current is spin polarized. The tunneling conductance spectra are shown to be quite sensitive to the direction of the magnetization axis in the ferromagnet only when the superconductor has odd parity. Therefore, it is possible to distinguish the parity of the superconductor by measuring the tunneling spectroscopy in F/S junctions.
Both the differential tunneling conductance and the surface local density of states (LDOS) of a [110]-oriented high-temperature superconductor in the pseudogap (PG) regime are studied theoretically. As a competing candidate for the mechanism of PG state, the charge-density wave (CDW), spin-density wave (SDW), $d$-density wave (DDW), and d-wave superconducting (DSC) orderings show distinct features in the tunneling conductance. For the CDW, SDW, and DSC orderings, the tunneling conductance approaches the surface LDOS as the barrier potential is increased. For the DDW ordering, we show for the f…
We study tunneling conductance in normal metal / insulator / ferromagnetic superconductor junctions. The tunneling spectra show a clear difference between spin-singlet s-wave pairing, spin-triplet opposite spin pairing and spin-triplet equal spin pairing: These pairings exhibit, respectively, gap struture, double peak structure and zero bias peak in the spectra. The obtained result may serve as a tool for determining the pairing symmetry of ferromagnetic superconductors.
We consider the separate spin channel contributions to the charge conductance in superconducting/ferromagnetic spin valve $F_1/N/F_2/S$ structures. We find that the up- and down-spin conductance contributions may have a very different behavior in the subgap bias region (i.e. there is a spin-split conductance). This leads to a subgap %EM2 added spin-split conductance peak in the total conductance. This peak behavior, which can be prominent also in $N/F/S$ systems, is strongly dependent, in a periodic way, on the thickness of the intermediate ferromagnetic layer. We study this phenomenon using a…
Tunneling conductance spectra of normal metal/insulator/superconductor (N/I/S) junctions are calculated to determine the potential of tunneling spectroscopy in investigations of topological superconductivity. Peculiar feature of topological superconductors is the formation of gapless edge states in them. Since the conductance of N/I/S junctions is sensitive to the formation of these edge states, topological superconductivity can be identified through edge-state detection. Herein, the effects of Fermi surface anisotropy and an applied magnetic field on the conductance spectra are analyzed to ga…
We present a transfer matrix approach that combines the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formalism and self-consistent solutions to the Bogolibuov-de Gennes (BdG) equations and use it to study the tunneling conductance and spin transport in ferromagnet (${\rm F}$)-superconductor (${\rm S}$) trilayers (${\rm F_1F_2 S}$) as functions of bias voltage. The self-consistency ensures that the spin and charge conservation laws are properly satisfied. We consider forward and angularly averaged conductances over a broad range of the strength of the exchange fields and ${\rm F}$ thicknesses, as the relativ…
Recent SIS tunneling conductance measurements on a range of Bi2212 crystals with varying oxygen doping have revealed new information on the behavior of a dip feature in the tunneling conductance. Calculations presented here show that the observed variation in position of the dip can be generated in an Eliashberg formalism for a d-wave superconducting state based on a single peak spectral weight function.
Phase-coherent diffusive transport through mesoscopic hybrid superconductor/normal metal tunneling structures is investigated. For a N-s-S two-barrier tunneling system with bulk S and N electrodes coupled by a mesoscopic superconducting constriction s, zero-bias conductance and non-linear I-V curves are calculated under the assumption that the dwell times of quasiparticles in the s region is shorter than inelastic relaxation time. It is shown that the low voltage conductance of this system determined by the Andreev reflection processes may exceed the conductance in the normal state and its val…
Based on an extended Hubbard model, we present calculations of both the local (i.e., single-site) and spatially-averaged differential tunneling conductance in d-wave superconductors containing nonmagnetic impurities in the unitary limit. Our results show that a random distribution of unitary impurities of any concentration can at most give rise to a finite zero-bias conductance (with no peak there) in spatially-averaged non-STM type of tunneling, in spite of the fact that local tunneling in the immediate vicinity of an isolated impurity does show a conductance peak at zero bias, whereas to giv…
Recent experiment on the tunneling spectra of ultrasmall superconducting grains revealed an unusual structure of the lowest differential conductance peak for grains in the odd charging states. We explain this behavior by nonequilibrium ``gapless'' excitations associated with different energy levels occupied by the unpaired electron. These excitations are generated by inelastic cotunneling.
In a setup where two ferromagnetic electrodes are attached to a superconductor, Andreev bound states are induced at both ferromagnet/superconductor (FM/SC) interfaces. We study how these states propagate through the SC and interact with each other. As a result of this interaction, the energetic positions of the Andreev states are not anymore determined solely by the magnetic properties of a single interface, but also depend on the interface distance and the relative magnetization orientation of the FM contacts. We discuss how these bound states show up as distinct peaks in the nonlocal conduct…
We theoretically study the charge conductance in anomalous Rashba metal (ARM)/superconductor junctions for various types of the pairing symmetries in the superconductor. The exotic state dubbed ARM, where one of the spin resolved Fermi surface is absent, is realized when the chemical potential is tuned both in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and an exchange field. Although a fully polarized ferromagnet metal (FPFM) is also a system where the electron's spin degrees of a freedom is reduced to be half, the electrons in an ARM have distinct features from those in FPFM. For th…
The transport properties between ferromagnets and high-Tc superconductors are investigated in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7-d (LSMO/YBCO)junctions in the geometry of cross-strip lines. The conductance spectra show zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCP), reflecting the charge transport in the ab-plane. When an external magnetic field is applied to the junctions, the conductance spectra show two notable features, i.e., an increase of background conductance and an asymmetric ZBCP splitting whose amplitude responds nonlinearly to the applied field. It is shown that the magnetic field response are consist…
Tunneling conductance of a clean normal metal/d-wave superconductor junction is studied by using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism. We show that the conductance is significantly affected by the interface spin-orbit coupling of the Rashba type, which is inevitably present due to the asymmetry of the junction.
We discuss electric transport through a point contact which bridges Majorana fermion modes appearing at edges of two helical superconductors. The contents focus on effects of interference and interaction unique to the Majorana fermions and role of spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Besides the Josephson current, the quasi-particle conductance depends sensitively on phase difference and relative helicity between the two superconductors. The interaction among the Majorana fermions causes the power-law temperature dependences of conductance for various tunneling channels. Especially, in the presence o…
We consider different effects that arise when time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductors are subjected to an external magnetic field, thus rendering the superconductor to be in the mixed state. We focus in particular on two time-reversal symmetry breaking order parameters which are believed to be realized in actual materials: $p+ıp'$-wave and $d+ıs$- or $d+ıd'$-wave. The first order parameter is relevant for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, while the latter order parameters have been suggested to exist near surfaces in some of the high-$T_c$ cuprates. We investigate the interplay between surface states and…
The magnetic field responses of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in tunneling spectra of high $T_{C}$ cuprate junctions are studied theoretically. Our calculation is based on the lattice Green's function method and takes the realistic electronic structure of the high $T_{C}$ cuprate into account. In marked contrast to previous works, it is shown that the critical magnetic field strength $H_{C}$ exists for the splittings of the ZBCP's to be discernible. $H_{C}$ is almost proportional to the product of the magnitude of pair potential, transmissivity of the junction, and the inverse of the F…
We investigate the low-energy quantum transport in the ballistic normal metal-insulator -superconductor junction in the presence of magnetic field creating Abrikosov vortices in the superconductor. Within the Bogolubov- de Gennes theory we show that the presence of the subgap quasiparticle states localized within the vortex cores near the junction interface leads to the strong resonant enhancement of the Andreev reflection probability, and the normal-to supercurrent conversion. The corresponding increase of the charge conductance of the junction is determined by the distance from the vortex ch…
SHORTENED ABSTRACT: A system exhibiting multiple simultaneously broken symmetries offers the opportunity to influence physical phenomena such as tunneling currents by means of external control parameters. In this paper, we consider the broken SU(2) (internal spin) symmetry of ferromagnetic systems coexisting with \textit{i)} the broken U(1) symmetry of superconductors and \textit{ii)} the broken spatial inversion symmetry induced by a Rashba term in a spin-orbit coupling Hamiltonian. In order to study the effect of these broken symmetries, we consider tunneling currents that arise in two diffe…
We study tunneling in ferromagnet/unconventional superconductor (F/S) junctions. We include the effects of spin polarization, interfacial resistance, and Fermi wavevector mismatch (FWM) between the F and S regions. Andreev reflection (AR) at the F/S interface, governing tunneling at low bias voltage, is strongly modified by these parameters. The conductance exhibits a very wide variety of features as a function of applied voltage.
We study the relationship between the differential conductance and the local density of states in tight-binding tunnel junctions where the junction' geometry can be varied between the point-contact and the planar-contact limits. The conductances are found to differ significantly in these two limiting cases. We also examine how the matrix element influences the tunneling characteristics and produces contrast in a simple model of scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Some implications regarding the interpretation of STM spectroscopic data in the cuprates are discussed. The calculations are carrie…
A theoretical model for tunneling spectroscopy employing tight-binding band structure, d-wave gap symmetry, group velocity, and tunneling directionality can exhibit a wide range of characteristics similar to the ones found in tunneling experiments on high-Tc superconductors. Using a band structure obtained for optimally-doped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8, the model tunneling density of states produces a good comparison to the point-contact tunneling conductance on the same material, especially in the gap region, displaying the same sub-gap shape and conductance peaks asymmetry.
In order to clarify the influence of (the presence of) the broken time-reversal symmetry state (BTRSS) induced near the interface, tunneling conductance spectra in normal metal / $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductor junctions are calculated on the basis of the quasiclassical Green's function method. The spatial dependence of the pair potential in the superconductor side is determined self-consistently. We discuss two types of the symmetry on the BTRSS; i) $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$+is-wave state and ii) $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$+i$d_{xy}$-wave state. It is shown that the amplitude of the subdominant component…
We study tunneling currents in a model consisting of two non-unitary ferromagnetic spin-triplet superconductors separated by a thin insulating layer. We find a novel interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity, manifested in the Josephson effect. This offers the possibility of tuning dissipationless currents of charge and spin in a well-defined manner by adjusting the magnetization direction on either side of the junction.
We present a formula for tunneling conductance in ballistic ferromagnet/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor junctions where the superconducting state has opposite spin pairing symmetry. The formula can involve correctly a ferromagnetism has been induced by effective mass difference between up- and down-spin electrons. Then, this effective mass mismatch ferromagnet and standard Stoner ferromagnet have been employed in this paper. As an application of the formulation, we have studied the tunneling effect for junctions including spin-triplet p-wave superconductor. The conductace spectra show a…
The asymmetry in the conductance peaks shown in recent PCT and STM measurements may be a signature of the d-wave gap. This is based on our model for the tunneling density of states (DOS) which incorporates the group velocity, tunneling directionality, and a realistic band structure. We also make the comparison with the isotropic s-wave and extended s-wave gap symmetries. Whereas the asymmetry of the conductance peaks for the isotropic s-wave tends to reflect the normal state DOS, the asymmetry for the extended s-wave is opposite to that of the d-wave gap. The model shows that a change in the g…
We calculate the tunneling conductance of a graphene normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) junction with a barrier of thickness $d$ and with an arbitrary voltage $V_0$ applied across the barrier region. We demonstrate that the tunneling conductance of such a NIS junction is an oscillatory function of both $d$ and $V_0$. We also show that the periodicity and amplitude of such oscillations deviate from their universal values in the thin barrier limit as obtained in earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 217001 (2006)] and become a function of the applied voltage $V_0$. Our results reprod…
We study how the multiplicity of the Fermi surface affects the zero-bias peak in conductance spectra of tunneling spectroscopy. As case studies, we consider models for organic superconductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ and (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$. We find that multiplicity of the Fermi surfaces can lead to a splitting of the zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). We propose that the presence/absence of the ZBCP splitting is used as a probe to distinguish the pairing symmetry in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$.
Recent findings of superconductors that simultaneously exhibit multiple spontaneously broken symmetries, such as ferromagnetic order or lack of an inversion center and even combinations of such broken symmetries, have led to much theoretical and experimental research. We consider quantum transport in a junction consisting of a ferromagnetic metal and a non-unitary ferromagnetic superconductor. It is shown that the conductance spectra provides detailed information about the superconducting gaps, and is thus helpful in determining the pairing symmetry of the Cooper pairs in ferromagnetic superco…
Physical effects of bilayer coupling on the tunneling spectroscopy of high T$_{c}$ cuprates are investigated. The bilayer coupling separates the bonding and antibonding bands and leads to a splitting of the coherence peaks in the tunneling differential conductance. However, the coherence peak of the bonding band is strongly suppressed and broadened by the particle-hole asymmetry in the density of states and finite quasiparticle life-time, and is difficult to resolve by experiments. This gives a qualitative account why the bilayer splitting of the coherence peaks was not clearly observed in tun…
We calculate the SIN and SIS tunneling conductances for the spin-fermion model. We argue that at strong spin-fermion coupling, relevant to cuprates, both conductances have dip features near the threshold frequencies when a tunneling electron begin emitting propagating spin excitation. We argue that the resonance spin frequency measured in neutron scattering can be inferred from the tunneling data by analyzing the derivatives of SIN and SIS conductances.
We calculate tunneling conductance of normal metal and superconducting topological insulator CuxBi2Se3 junctions for the possible pairing symmetries. In the presence of gapless Andreev bound states (ABSs), the tunneling conductance shows a zero-bias peak even for the three-dimensional full-gap superconducting state. This zero-bias conductance peak stems from the enhancement of the surface density of states induced by the surface-state transition in momentum space.
The effects of a non-magnetic Zn impurity substituting an in-plane Cu are studied by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation self-consistently which is derived from the \ttju Hamiltonian with all the allowed order parameters included. The Zn impurity, modeled in terms of a potential scatterer in unitary limit, induces local staggered magnetic moments around itself, and the calculated NMR shifts from the induced moments are in agreement with the experimental Cu NMR spectra. We also note that the experimentally observed negative slope of the tunneling conductance can result from the next-neare…
We studied the tunneling density of states in YBCO films under strong currents flowing along node directions. The currents were induced by fields of up to 32.4T parallel to the film surface and perpendicular to the $CuO_{2}$ planes. We observed a remarkable change in the tunneling conductance at high fields where the gap-like feature shifts discontinuously from 15meV to a lower bias of 11meV, becoming more pronounced as the field increases. The effect takes place in increasing fields around 9T and the transition back to the initial state occurs around 5T in decreasing fields. We argue that thi…
We study the sub-gap conductance of a ferromagnetic mesoscopic region attached to a ferromagnetic and a superconducting electrode by means of tunnel junctions. In the absence of the exchange field, the ratio $r= γ/ ε_T$ of the two tunnel junction resistances determines the behaviour of the sub-gap conductance which possesses a zero-bias peak for $r\gg 1$ and for $r\ll 1$ a peak at finite voltage. We show that the inclusion of the exchange field leads to a peak splitting for $r\ll 1$, while it shifts the zero-bias anomaly to finite voltages for $r\gg 1$.
A one-dimensional semiconductor nanowire proximitized by a nearby superconductor may become a topological superconductor hosting localized Majorana zero modes at the two wire ends in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman spin splitting (arising from an external magnetic field). The hallmark of the presence of such Majorana zero modes is the appearance of a zero-temperature quantized zero-bias conductance peak in the tunneling spectroscopy of the Majorana nanowire. We theoretically study the temperature and the tunnel coupling dependence of the tunneling conductance in such nanowires t…
We study the differential conductance for charge tunneling into a semiconductor wire--superconductor hybrid structure, which is actively investigated as a possible scheme for realizing topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. The calculations are done based on a tight-binding model of the heterostructure using both a Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk approach and a Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function method. The dependence of various tunneling conductance features on the coupling strength between the semiconductor and the superconductor, the tunnel barrier height, and temperature is …
