Even after the negative result by the MiniBooNE experiment, we can still have a (3+1)-scheme with one sterile neutrino whose mixing lies within the allowed region by MiniBooNE. In this note we discuss the possible effects of such a scheme on the flavor ratio of high-energy cosmic neutrinos from cosmologically distant astrophysical sources. It is shown that in principle there is still a chance to observe deviation from the standard three flavor scenario in the flavor ratio of the high-energy cosmic neutrinos. It is proposed to see the energy spectrum to cope with the theoretical uncertainties which were recently pointed out by Lipari, Lusignoli and Meloni. It is emphasized that the $ν_μ-ν_τ$ ratio is relatively insensitive to the theoretical uncertainties and therefore this ratio is the key ingredient to look for the signatures of the sterile neutrino scheme. Although the statistics of data from one source in the next generation of neutrino telescopes are estimated not to be sufficient to distinguish the three and four family schemes, if we can gain statistics by, e.g., summing over data from many sources, then it might be possible to have a signature for the (3+1)-scheme.
Renewed interest in GeV-scale sterile neutrinos capable of explaining active neutrino oscillations via see-saw type I mechanism has been expressed in several proposals of direct searches. Given this activity we estimate the minimal values of sterile-active mixing angles provided one, two, or three sterile neutrinos are lighter than D-meson.
This brief report is an extension of a prediction of neutrino oscillation with a sterile neutrino using parameters of the sterile neutrino mass and mixing angle recently extracted from experiment.
We explore the possibility of generating a non-zero $U_{e3}$ element of the neutrino mixing matrix from tribimaximal neutrino mixing by adding a light sterile neutrino to the active neutrinos. Small active-sterile mixing can provide the necessary deviation from tribimaximal mixing to generate a non-zero $θ_{13}$ and atmospheric mixing $θ_{23}$ different from maximal. Assuming no CP-violation, we study the phenomenological impact of sterile neutrinos in the context of current neutrino oscillation data. The tribimaximal pattern is broken in such a manner that the second column of tribimaximal mi…
In this work we consider the standard model extended with singlet sterile neutrinos with mass in the eV range and mixed with the active neutrinos. The active-sterile neutrino mixing renders new contributions to the invisible Z decay width which, in the case of light sterile neutrinos, depends on the active-sterile mixing matrix elements only. We then use the current experimental value of the invisible Z decay width to obtain bounds on these mixing matrix elements for both (3+1) and (3+2) models.
Seesaw mechanism constrains from below mixing between active and sterile neutrinos for fixed sterile neutrino masses. Signal events associated with sterile neutrino decays inside a detector at fixed target experiment are suppressed by the mixing angle to the power of four. Therefore sensitivity of experiments such as SHiP and DUNE should take into account minimal possible values of the mixing angles. We extend the previous study of this subject arXiv:1312.2887 to a more general case of non-zero CP-violating phases in the neutrino sector. Namely, we provide numerical estimate of minimal value o…
The production of a sterile species via active-sterile mixing in a thermal medium is studied in an exactly solvable model. The \emph{exact} time evolution of the sterile distribution function is determined by the dispersion relations and damping rates $Γ_{1,2}$ for the quasiparticle modes. These depend on $\wtg = Γ_{aa}/2ΔE$, with $Γ_{aa}$ the interaction rate of the active species in absence of mixing and $ΔE$ the oscillation frequency in the medium without damping. $\wtg \ll1,\wtg \gg 1$ describe the weak and strong damping limits respectively. For $\wtg\ll1$, $Γ_1 = Γ_{aa}\cos^2\tm ; Γ_{2}=…
Recent IceCube search results for sterile neutrino increased tension between the combined appearance and disappearance experiments. On the other hand, MiniBooNE latest data confirms at $4.9σ$ CL the short-baseline oscillation anomaly. We analyze published IceCube data based on two different active-sterile mixing schemes using one additional sterile neutrino flavor. We present exclusion regions in the parameter ranges $0.01 \le \sin^2 θ_{24} \le 0.1$ and $0.1~{\rm eV}^2 \le Δm^2_{42} \le 10~{\rm eV}^2$ for the mass-mixing and flavor-mixing schemes. Under the more conservative mass-mixing scheme…
Matrix element $U_{τN}$ of sterile neutrino N mixing with $ν_τ$ is the least constrained in the literature among the three $U_{αN}$ ($α=e,μ,τ$) mixing parameters characterizing the sterile neutrino phenomenology. We study the contribution of massive dominantly sterile neutrinos to purely leptonic $τ$-decays and semileptonic decays of $τ$ and K, D mesons. We consider some decays allowed in the Standard Model (SM) as well as Lepton Flavor and Lepton Number Violating (LFV, LNV) decays forbidden in the SM. From the existing experimental data on the branching ratios of these processes we derived ne…
We assume that the mass matrix of active neutrinos has hierarchical form with small mixings, similar to quark mass matrix. We show that the large mixings between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ as well as between $ν_e$ and certain combination of $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ required by the present data can appear due to the presence of a sterile neutrino state. Two realizations of this possibility are considered: (i) Large flavor mixing appears as a result of sterile neutrino ``decoupling'' ($m_{ss} \gg m_a$), so that the active-sterile mixings are negligible. (ii) Sterile neutrino has a mass of O(1) eV and its mixing wit…
Assuming the existence of an eV or KeV scale sterile neutrino, we develop a 3+1 neutrino mass model using $A_4\times Z_4 \times Z_2$ symmetry group. Three Higgs $H, H^{\prime}$ and $H^{\prime\prime}$ are considered to give a desired neutrino mass matrix which generates non-zero $θ_{13}$. The model can give neutrino mixing parameters that are well within the experimental 3$σ$ bounds. We also calculate the $4\times 4$ active-sterile neutrino mixing matrix, and it is found to be consistent with experimental bounds.
If the hints for light sterile neutrinos from short-baseline anomalies are to be taken seriously, global fits indicate active-sterile mixings of a magnitude comparable to the known reactor mixing. We therefore study the conditions under which the active-sterile and reactor mixings could have the same origin in an underlying flavour model. As a starting point, we use $μ-τ$ symmetry in the active neutrino sector, which (for three neutrinos) yields a zero reactor neutrino angle and a maximal atmospheric one. We demonstrate that adding one sterile neutrino can change this setting, so that the acti…
Sensitivity of a neutrino factory to various mixing angles in a scheme with one sterile neutrino is studied using $ν_e\toν_μ$, $ν_μ\toν_μ$, $ν_e\toν_τ$ and $ν_μ\toν_τ$. While the "discovery-channel" $ν_μ\toν_τ$ is neither useful in the standard three flavor scheme nor very powerful in the sensitivity study of sterile neutrino mixings, this channel is important to check unitarity and to probe the new CP phase in the scheme beyond the standard neutrino mixing framework.
It is shown that if small neutrino masses owe their origin to the conventional seesaw mechanism and the MNS mixing matrix is in the exact bimaximal form, then there exist symmetries in the theory that allow one of the righthanded neutrinos to become naturally massless, making it a candidate for the sterile neutrino discussed in the literature. Departures from the exact bimaximal limit leads to tiny mass for the sterile neutrino as well as its mixing to the active neutrinos. This provides a minimal theoretical framework where a simultaneous explanation of the solar, atmospheric and LSND observa…
We compare the solutions to the short baseline neutrino anomaly based on oscillations to sterile neutrinos and the Stochastic Neutrino Mixing Mechanism (SNMM) through an analysis of the present neutrino data. The SNMM suggests worse fits than a 3 + 1 sterile neutrino model, although it cannot be discarded by present data. We propose an experiment to distinguish between both solutions, based on placing a $^8$Li source inside a 5kton-yr detector (like SNO). We studied the sensitivity of such an experiment, which makes it possible to discriminate within $2σ$ the SNMM from the 3+1 sterile hypothes…
We study the production of heavy sterile neutrino $N$, $e^+ e^- \to N ν({\bar ν})$, at the Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC) and its $ljj$ signal in its decay to three charged fermions. We study background events for this process which are mainly events coming from W pair production. We study the production of a single heavy sterile neutrino and the sensitivity of CEPC to the mixing of sterile neutrino with active neutrinos. We study the production of two degenerate heavy sterile neutrinos in a low energy see-saw model by taking into account the constraints on mixings of sterile neutri…
We investigate resonant active-sterile neutrino oscillations emergent from the interplay between matter, CPT- and Lorentz-violating coefficients with different energy dependences. Novel and experimentally accessible resonant neutrino oscillation phenomenologies are predicted and possible implications for observed, but yet unexplained, neutrino oscillation anomalies such as LSND and MiniBooNE are discussed.
A phenomenological model with active and sterile neutrinos is used for calculations of neutrino oscillation characteristics at the normal mass hierarchy of active neutrinos. Taking into account the contributions of sterile neutrinos, appearance and survival probabilities for active neutrinos are calculated. Modified graphical dependencies for the probability of appearance of electron neutrinos/antineutrinos in muon neutrino/antineutrino beams as a function of the ratio of the distance to the neutrino energy and other model parameters are obtained. It is shown that in the case of a certain type…
Standard active--sterile neutrino oscillations do not provide a satisfactory description of the LSND evidence for neutrino oscillations together with the constraints from MiniBooNE and other null-result short-baseline oscillation experiments. However, if the mass or the mixing of the sterile neutrino depends in an exotic way on its energy all data become consistent. I explore the phenomenological consequences of the assumption that either the mass or the mixing scales with the neutrino energy as $1/E_ν^r (r > 0)$. Since the neutrino energy in LSND is about 40 MeV, whereas MiniBooNE operates at…
This is an extension of estimates of the probability of $ν$ to $e$ neutrino oscillation with one sterile neutrino to three sterile neutrinos, using a 6x6 matrix. Since the mixing angle for only one sterile neutrino has been experimentally determined, we estimate the $ν$ to $e$ neutrino oscillation probability with different mixing angles for two of the sterile neutrinos.
Mixing of active neutrinos with sterile ones generate ``induced'' contributions to the mass matrix of active neutrinos $\sim m_S \sin^2θ_{aS}$, where $m_S$ is the Majorana mass of the sterile neutrino and $θ_{aS}$ is the active-sterile mixing angle. We study possible effects of the induced matrix which can modify substantially the implications of neutrino oscillation results. We have identified the regions of $m_S$ and $\sin^2θ_{aS}$ where the induced matrix (i) provides the dominant structures, (ii) gives the sub-dominant effects and (iii) where its effects can be neglected. The induced matri…
We consider a Mass Varying Neutrinos (MaVaNs) model in supersymmetric theory. The model includes effects of supersymmetry breaking transmitted by the gravitational interaction from the hidden sector, in which supersymmetry was broken, to the dark energy sector. Then evolutions of the neutrino mass and the equation of state parameter of the dark energy are presented in the model. It is remarked that only the mass of a sterile neutrino is variable in the case of the vanishing mixing between the left-handed and a sterile neutrino on cosmological time scale. The finite mixing makes the mass of the…
The MiniBooNe collaboration has recently reported evidence for a light sterile neutrino with large mixing angles thus corroborating the measurement by LSND twenty years ago. Such a state would be directly in conflict with Planck measurement of BBN $N_{eff}$ unless there is self-interaction in the sterile sector. Our objective is to investigate if such interactions could result in resonant absorption in the cosmogenic neutrino spectrum and its consequences for the IceCube experiment. We show that it is possible to give independent bounds on sterile neutrino parameter space from IceCube observat…
The inverse and linear seesaw scenarios are two typical extensions of the canonical seesaw mechanism, which contain much more sterile degrees of freedom but can naturally explain the smallness of three active neutrino masses at a sufficiently low energy scale (e.g., the TeV scale). To fully describe the mixing among three active neutrinos, three sterile neutrinos and three extra gauge-singlet neutral fermions in either of these two seesaw paradigms, we present the {\it first} full parametrization of the $9\times 9$ flavor mixing matrix in terms of 36 rotation angles and 36 CP-violating phases.…
We investigate the impact of a fourth sterile neutrino at reactor and Spallation Neutron Source neutrino detectors. Specifically, we explore the discovery potential of the TEXONO and COHERENT experiments to subleading sterile neutrino effects through the measurement of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering event rate. Our dedicated $χ^2$-sensitivity analysis employs realistic nuclear structure calculations adequate for high purity sub-keV threshold Germanium detectors.
Sterile neutrinos with masses $\sim 0.1$ eV or higher would play an important role in astrophysics and cosmology. We explore possible signatures of such sterile neutrinos at long baseline experiments. We determine the neutrino conversion probabilities analytically in a 4-neutrino framework, including matter effects, treating the sterile mixing angles $θ_{14}, θ_{24}, θ_{34}$, the deviation of $θ_{23}$ from maximality,as well as $θ_{13}$ and the ratio $Δm^2_\odot/Δm^2_{atm}$ as small parameters for a perturbative expansion. This gives rise to analytically tractable expressions for flavor conver…
Sterile neutrinos have been invoked to explain the observed neutrino masses, but they can also have significant implications for cosmology and accelerator experiments. We explore the collider signatures of a simple extension of the Standard Model, where sterile neutrinos acquire their mass after electroweak symmetry breaking, via their coupling to a real singlet Higgs. In this model, heavy sterile neutrinos can be produced in accelerators from decays of the Higgs bosons. Their own decay can yield distinct signals, suggesting both the presence of an extended Higgs sector and the coupling of the…
We investigate a minimal extension of the standard model in which the only new ingredient is the sterile neutrinos. We do not introduce extra Higgs multiplets or high dimensional effective operators to induce mass terms for the active neutrinos, and the model is renormalizable in itself. We show for arbitrary numbers of generations and sterile neutrinos that the independent physical parameters in the leptonic sector are much less than previously anticipated. For instance, with three active and two sterile neutrinos, there are four mixing angles and three CP phases in addition to four non-vanis…
We study the effect of sterile neutrino on some low scale processes in the framework of minimal extended seesaw (MES). MES is the extension of the seesaw mechanism with the addition of sterile neutrino of intermediate mass. The MES model in this work is based on $Δ(96)\times C_{2}\times C_{3}$ flavor symmetry. The structures of mass matrices in the framework lead to $TM_{1}$ mixing with $μ\text{-}τ$ symmetry. The model predicts maximal value of Dirac CP phase. We carry out our analysis to study the new physics contributions from the sterile neutrino to different charged lepton flavor violation…

The signatures of sterile neutrinos in the supernova neutrino signal in megaton water Cerenkov detectors are studied. Time dependent modulation of the neutrino signal emerging from the sharp changes in the oscillation probability due to shock waves is shown to be a smoking gun for the existence of sterile neutrinos. These modulations and indeed the entire neutrino oscillation signal is found to be different for the case with just three active neutrinos and the cases where there are additional sterile species mixed with the active neutrinos. The effect of turbulence is taken into account and it…
This paper examines sterile neutrino oscillation models in light of recently published results from the MiniBooNE Experiment. The new MiniBooNE data include the updated neutrino results, including the low energy region, and the first antineutrino results, as well as first results from the off-axis NuMI beam observed in the MiniBooNE detector. These new global fits also include data from LSND, KARMEN, NOMAD, Bugey, CHOOZ, CCFR84, and CDHS. Constraints from atmospheric oscillation data have been imposed.
The matter effects for solar neutrino oscillations are studied in a general scheme with an arbitrary number of sterile neutrinos, without any constraint on the mixing, assuming only a realistic hierarchy of neutrino squared-mass differences in which the smallest squared-mass difference is effective in solar neutrino oscillations. The validity of the analytic results are illustrated with a numerical solution of the evolution equation in three examples of the possible mixing matrix in the simplest case of four-neutrino mixing.
A recently proposed asymmetric mirror dark matter model where the mirror sector is connected with the visible one by a right handed neutrino portal, is shown to lead naturally to a 3+1 active-sterile neutrino spectrum, if the portal consists only of two right handed neutrinos. At the tree level the model has four massless neutrino states, three active and one sterile. The active neutrinos pick up tiny masses via the minimal radiative inverse seesaw mechanism at the one loop level. The loop effects also generate the large solar and atmospheric mixings, as well as the observed reactor mixing for…
We investigate the effect of sterile neutrinos that are nearly degenerate with active ones on the flux of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray neutrinos at earth. This offers a way to probe neutrino oscillations in the mass-squared range (10^{-16} eV^2 < δm^2 < 10^{-11} eV^2) which maybe hard to detect by any other means. Taking into account the present experimental uncertainties of the active-active mixing angles and by allowing any values for the active-sterile mixing angles we find that the ratio of the electron and muon neutrino fluxes may change by -40 % to 70 % in comparison with the ratio in the…
It is suggested that there is an underlying symmetry which relates the quark and lepton sectors. Namely, among the mixing matrix elements of CKM for quarks and PMNS for leptons there exist complementarity relations at a high energy scale (such as the see-saw or even the GUT scales). Assuming that the relations would remain during the matrix elements running down to the EW scale. Observable breaking of the rational relation is attributed to existence of sterile neutrinos which mix with the active neutrino to result in the observable PMNS matrix. We show that involvement of a sterile in the (3+1…
We consider the simplest extension of the standard electroweak model by one sterile neutrino that allows for neutrino masses and mixing. We find that its leptonic sector contains much less free physical parameters than previously realized. In addition to the two neutrino masses, the lepton mixing matrix in charged current interactions involves (n-1) free physical mixing angles for n generations. The mixing matrix in neutral current interactions of neutrinos is completely fixed by the two masses. Both interactions conserve CP. We illustrate the phenomenological implications of the model by vacu…
The presence of light sterile neutrinos would strongly modify the energy spectrum of the Tritium β-electrons. We perform an analysis of the KATRIN experiment's sensitivity by scanning almost all the allowed region of neutrino mass-squared difference and mixing angles of the 3+1 scenario. We consider the effect of the unknown absolute mass scale of active neutrinos on the sensitivity of KATRIN to the sterile neutrino mass. We show that after 3 years of data-taking, the KATRIN experiment can be sensitive to mixing angles as small as sin^2 (2θ_s) ~ 10^-2. Particularly we show that for small mixin…
Sterile neutrinos can be produced in the early universe via interactions with their active counterparts. For small active-sterile mixing angles, thermal equilibrium with the standard model plasma is not reached and sterile neutrinos are only produced via flavor oscillations. We study in detail this regime, taking into account matter potentials and decoherence effects caused by elastic scatterings with the plasma. We find that resonant oscillations occurring at temperatures $T\lesssim 10\,\mathrm{GeV}$ lead to a significant enhancement of the sterile neutrino production rate. Taking this into a…
In this work, we study the lepton-number-violating processes of $K^\pm$ and $D^\pm$ mesons. Two quasi-degenerate sterile neutrinos are assumed to induce such processes. Different with the case where only one sterile neutrino involves, here, the CP phases of the mixing parameters could give sizable contribution. This, in turn, would affect the absolute values of the mixing parameters determined by the experimental upper limits of the branching fractions. A general function which express the difference of the mixing parameters for two-generation and one-generation is presented. Special cases wit…
We revisit the flavor composition of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos observed at neutrino telescopes. Assuming unitary time evolution of the neutrino flavor states, the flavor composition observable at Earth is related to the initial composition at their sources via oscillation-averaged flavor transitions. In a previous study we derived general bounds on the flavor composition of TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrinos assuming three-flavor unitary mixing. We extend these bounds to the case of active-sterile neutrino mixing. Our bounds are analytical, derived based only on the unitarity of the mix…
We study two possible explanations for short baseline neutrino oscillation anomalies, such as the LSND and MiniBooNE anti-neutrino data, and for the reactor anomaly. The first scenario is the mini-seesaw mechanism with two eV-scale sterile neutrinos. We present both analytic formulas and numerical results showing that this scenario could account for the short baseline and reactor anomalies and is consistent with the observed masses and mixings of the three active neutrinos. We also show that this scenario could arise naturally from an effective theory containing a TeV-scale VEV, which could be…
We investigate the effects of a mixing of active and sterile neutrinos on the ratios of supernova electron neutrino flux ($F_e$) and antineutrino flux ($F_{\bar e}$) to the total flux of the other neutrino and antineutrino flavours ($F_a$). We assume that the heaviest (in the normal hierarchy) Standard Model neutrino $ν_3$ mixes with a sterile neutrino resulting in a pair of mass eigenstates with a small mass gap. Using the density matrix formalism we solve numerically the the evolution of neutrino states in the envelope of a supernova and determine the flux ratios $F_e/F_a$ and $F_{\bar{e}}/F…
Neutrino mixing matrix appears to be close to bimaximal mixing, but for the solar mixing angle which is definitively smaller than forty five degrees. Whereas it seems quite easy to understand bimaximal mixing with the use of new global symmetries, as in models using $L_e - L_μ- L_τ$, understanding the about to eleven degrees of deviation in the observed solar angle seems less simple. We suggest that such a deviation could be due to a light sterile neutrino that mixes with the active sector. The mass scale needed to produce the effect has to be smaller than atmospheric scale, and it would intro…
Studies of limits on active-sterile neutrino mixing derived from big bang nucleosynthesis considerations are extended to consider the dependance of these constraints on the primordial deuterium abundance. This study is motivated by recent measurements of D/H in quasar absorption systems, which at present yield discordant results. Limits on active-sterile mixing are somewhat relaxed for high D/H. For low D/H ($\approx 2 \times 10^{-5}$), no active-sterile neutrino mixing is allowed by currently popular upper limits on the primordial $^4$He abundance $Y$. For such low primordial D/H values, the …
We analyze the effect of the Dark-large mixing angle (DLMA) solution on the effective Majorana mass ($m_{ββ}$) governing neutrino-less double beta decay ($0νββ$) in the presence of a sterile neutrino. We consider the 3+1 picture, comprising of one additional sterile neutrino. We have checked that the MSW resonance in the sun can take place in the DLMA parameter space in this scenario. Next we investigate how the values of the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ corresponding to the DLMA region alter the predictions of $m_{ββ}$ including a sterile neutrino in the analysis. We also compare our results w…
In the paper "Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and Active-Sterile Neutrino Mixing: Evidence for Maximal Muon-Neutrino/Sterile-Neutrino Mixing in Super Kamiokande" (astro-ph/9810075), we suggested that to evade the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis exclusion of the muon neutrino to sterile neutrino oscillation explanation of the Super Kamiokande data, the tau neutrino must have a mass over about 15 eV and it must mix with a lighter sterile neutrino. A stable tau neutrino with this mass is inconsistent with cosmological structure formation. In a comment on our paper (astro-ph/9811067), Foot and Volkas argued tha…
We consider the minimal extended seesaw model which can accommodate an eV scale sterile neutrino. The scenario also includes three heavy right handed neutrinos in addition to the light sterile neutrino. In this model, the active-sterile mixing act as non-unitary parameters. If the values of these mixing angles are of $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$, the model introduces deviation of the PMNS matrix from unitarity to this order. We find that the oscillation data from various experiments imposes an upper bound on the lightest heavy neutrino mass scale as $\sim 10^{11}$ GeV in the context of this model. We st…
We derive bounds on the mixing between the left-chiral ("active") and the right-chiral ("sterile") neutrinos, provided from the combination of neutrino oscillation data and direct experimental searches for sterile neutrinos. We demonstrate that the mixing of sterile neutrinos with any flavour can be significantly suppressed, provided that the angle theta_13 is non-zero. This means that the lower bounds on sterile neutrino lifetime, coming from the negative results of direct experimental searches can be relaxed (by as much as the order of magnitude at some masses). We also demonstrate that the …
A scheme is described in which the light gravitino in low energy SUSY breaking models mixes with neutrinos. The mixing between gravitino and neutrinos arises through the standard model symmetry breaking and an R-parity and lepton number violating bilinear term in the superpotential. It is shown that mixings compatible with the neutrino experiments can be obtained within the cosmological bound on the bilinear term set by the baryon asymmetry of the universe.
We explore the energy and entropy transport as well as the lepton number variation induced from the mixing between electron and sterile neutrinos with keV mass in the supernova core. We develop a radial- and time-dependent treatment of the sterile-electron neutrino mixing, by including ordinary matter effects, reconversions between sterile and electron antineutrinos, as well as the collisional production of sterile particles for the first time. The dynamical feedback due to the production of sterile particles on the composition and thermodynamic properties of the core only leads to major impli…
We study the impact of TeV-scale sterile neutrinos on electro-weak precision observables and lepton number and flavour violating decays in the framework of a type-I see-saw extension of the Standard Model. At tree level sterile neutrinos manifest themselves via non-unitarity of the PMNS matrix and at one-loop level they modify the oblique radiative corrections. We derive explicit formulae for the S,T,U parameters in terms of the neutrino masses and mixings and perform a numerical fit to the electro-weak observables. We find regions of parameter space with a sizable active-sterile mixing which …
Motivated by results from short-baseline neutrino oscillation data, we study neutrino masses and mixing in U(1)' supersymmetric models with R-parity breaking. Whether R-parity is broken spontaneous or through (effective) bilinear terms in the Lagrangian, the breaking terms induce mixing between the neutralinos and neutrinos, creating a scenario in which some neutralinos can be heavy, and some light. Both the right-handed neutrino and the singlino (fermionic partner of the additional singlet Higgs field) can be light, and act as sterile neutrinos, which reconcile some of the anomalies observed …
In this work we analyze the effects of quantum decoherence upon the precession of the neutrino polarization vector in a supernovae-like environment. In order to perform the study we have determined the time-dependence of the polarization vector by solving the equation of motion for different neutrino-mixing schemes. The results of the calculations show that the onset of decoherence depends strongly on the parameters of the adopted mixing scheme. As examples we have considered : a) the mixing between active neutrinos and b) the mixing between active end sterile neutrinos.
Matrix norms can be used to measure the "distance" between two matrices which translates naturally to the problem of calculating the unitary deviation of the neutrino mixing matrices. Variety of matrix norms opens a possibility to measure such deviations on different structural levels of the mixing matrix.
Nucleosynthesis restrictions on mixing of active neutrinos with possible sterile ones are obtained with the account of experimentally determined mixing between all active neutrinos. The earlier derived bounds, valid in the absence of active-active mixing, are reanalyzed and significant difference is found in the resonance case. The results are obtained both analytically and numerically by solution of complete system of integro-differential kinetic equations. A good agreement between analytical and numerical approaches is demonstrated. A role of possibly large cosmological lepton asymmetry is d…
