We present the X-ray source catalog in the Subaru/XMM-Newton deep survey. A continuous area of 1.14 deg^2 centered at R.A. = 02h18m and Dec. = -05d is mapped by seven pointings with XMM-Newton covering the 0.2-10 keV band. From the combined images of the EPIC pn and MOS cameras, we detect 866, 1114, 645, and 136 sources with sensitivity limits of 6x10^{-16}, 8x10^{-16}, 3x10^{-15}, and 5x10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 0.5-2, 0.5-4.5, 2-10, and 4.5-10 keV bands, respectively, with detection likelihood >= 7 (corresponding to a confidence level of 99.91%). The catalog consists of 1245 sources in total including 32 extended-source candidates. The averaged log N-log S relations are in good agreement with previous results, bridging the flux range between Chandra deep surveys and brighter surveys. The log N-log S relations show significant spatial variation among pointings on a scale of 0.2 deg^2. Analyzing the auto correlation function, we detect significant clustering signals from the 0.5-2 keV band sample, which can be fit with a power law form (θ/θ_c)^{-0.8} with a correlation length of θ_c=5.9^{+1.0}_{-0.9} arcsec when the integral constraint term is included. In the 2-10 keV band, however, the clustering is not significant with a 90% upper limit of θ_c < 1.5 arcsec.
We present multi-waveband optical imaging data obtained from observations of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS). The survey field, centered at R.A.=02:18:00, decl.=-05:00:00, has been the focus of a wide range of multi-wavelength observing programs spanning from X-ray to radio wavelengths. A large part of the optical imaging observations are carried out with Suprime-Cam on Subaru Telescope at Mauna Kea in the course of Subaru Telescope Observatory Projects. This paper describes our optical observations, data reduction and analysis procedures employed, and the characteristics of the data …
We use the deep wide-field optical imaging data of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) to discuss the luminosity (mass) dependent galaxy colours down to z'=25.0 (5 x 10^9 h_{70}^{-2} Msun) for z~1 galaxies in colour-selected high density regions. We find an apparent absence of galaxies on the red colour-magnitude sequence below z'~24.2, corresponding to ~M*+2 (~10^{10} Msun) with respect to passively evolving galaxies at z~1. Galaxies brighter than M*-0.5 (8 x 10^{10} Msun), however, are predominantly red passively evolving systems, with few blue star forming galaxies at these magnitudes.…
We present luminosity functions (LFs) and various properties of Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=3.1, 3.7, and 5.7, in a 1 deg^2 sky of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) Field. We obtain a photometric sample of 858 LAE candidates based on deep Subaru/Suprime-Cam imaging data, and a spectroscopic sample of 84 confirmed LAEs from Subaru/FOCAS and VLT/VIMOS spectroscopy in a survey volume of ~10^6 Mpc^3 with a limiting Lya luminosity of ~3x10^42 erg/s. We derive the LFs of Lya and UV-continuum (~1500 Å) for each redshift, taking into account the statistical error and the field-to-field variation. …
We investigate clustering properties of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z~3 based on deep multi-waveband imaging data from optical to near-infrared wavelengths in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. The LBGs are selected by U-V and V-z' colors in one contiguous area of 561 arcmin^2 down to z'=25.5. We study the dependence of the clustering strength on rest-frame UV and optical magnitudes, which can be indicators of star formation rate and stellar mass, respectively. The correlation length is found to be a strong function of both UV and optical magnitudes with brighter galaxies being more clustere…
We present the properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected by optical variability in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). Based on the locations of variable components and light curves, 211 optically variable AGN were reliably selected. We made three AGN samples; X-ray detected optically non-variable AGN (XA), X-ray detected optically variable AGN (XVA), and X-ray undetected optically variable AGN (VA). In the VA sample, we found a bimodal distribution of the ratio between the variable component flux and the host flux. One of these two components in the distribution, a class of AGN…
We present our survey for optically faint variable objects using multi-epoch (8-10 epochs over 2-4 years) $i'$-band imaging data obtained with Subaru Suprime-Cam over 0.918 deg$^2$ in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). We found 1040 optically variable objects by image subtraction for all the combinations of images at different epochs. This is the first statistical sample of variable objects at depths achieved with 8-10m class telescopes or HST. The detection limit for variable components is $i'_{\rm{vari}}\sim25.5$ mag. These variable objects were classified into variable stars, supernov…
We study the 37 brightest radio sources in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). Using mid-IR (Spitzer MIPS 24 micron) data we expect to trace nuclear accretion activity, even if it is obscured at optical wavelengths, unless the obscuring column is extreme. Our results suggest that above the `FRI/FRII' radio luminosity break most of the radio sources are associated with objects that have excess mid-IR emission, only some of which are broad-line objects, although there is one clear low-accretion-rate FRI. The fraction of objects with mid-IR excess drops dramatically below the FRI/FRII break,…
We obtained the number counts and the rest-frame B-band luminosity function of the color-selected old passively-evolving galaxies (OPEGs) at z=1 with very high statistical accuracy using a large and homogeneous sample of about 4000 such objects with z' <25 detected in the area of 1.03 deg^2 in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field. Our selection criteria are defined on the i'-z' and R-z' color-magnitude plane so that OPEGs at z=0.9-1.1 with formation redshift z_f=2-10 are properly sampled. The limiting magnitude corresponds to the luminosity of galaxies with M_*+3 at z=0. We made a pi…
The delay time distribution (DTD) of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from star formation is an important clue to reveal the still unknown progenitor system of SNe Ia. Here we report on a measurement of the SN Ia DTD in a delay time range of t_Ia = 0.1-8.0 Gyr by using the faint variable objects detected in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) down to i' ~ 25.5. We select 65 SN candidates showing significant spatial offset from nuclei of the host galaxies having old stellar population at z ~ 0.4-1.2, out of more than 1,000 SXDS variable objects. Although spectroscopic type classification is not…
We present multi-object spectroscopy of galaxies in the immediate (Mpc-scale) environments of four low-power (L_1.4 GHz < 10^25 W/Hz) radio galaxies at z~0.5, selected from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. We use the spectra to calculate velocity dispersions and central redshifts of the groups the radio galaxies inhabit, and combined with XMM-Newton (0.3-10 keV) X-ray observations investigate the L_X--sigma_v and T_X--sigma_v scaling relationships. All the radio galaxies reside in moderately rich groups -- intermediate environments between poor groups and rich clusters, with remarkably simila…
We describe deep radio imaging at 1.4-GHz of the 1.3 square degree Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF), made with the Very Large Array in B and C configurations. We present a radio map of the entire field, and a catalogue of 505 sources covering 0.8 square degrees to a peak flux density limit of 100 microJy. Robust optical identifications are provided for 90% of the sources, and suggested IDs are presented for all but 14 (of which 7 are optically blank, and 7 are close to bright contaminating objects). We show that the optical properties of the radio sources do not change with flux density, su…
We study the 37 brightest radio sources in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). We have spectroscopic redshifts for 24 of 37 objects and photometric redshifts for the remainder, yielding a median redshift z_med for the whole sample of z_med ~= 1.1 and a median radio luminosity close to the `FRI/FRII' luminosity divide. Using mid-IR (Spitzer MIPS 24 um) data we expect to trace nuclear accretion activity, even if it is obscured at optical wavelengths, unless the obscuring column is extreme. Our results suggest that above the FRI/FRII radio luminosity break most of the radio sources are assoc…
We present the results of a Chandra ACIS-I survey of a high latitude region at 13h +38 which was earlier observed with ROSAT (McHardy et al. 1998) and which has recently been observed by XMM-Newton for 200ksec. XMM-Newton will provide good quality X-ray spectra for over 200 sources with fluxes around the knee of the logN/logS, which are responsible for the bulk of the X-ray background (XRB). The main aim of the Chandra observations is to provide arcsecond, or better, positions, and hence reliable identifications, for the XMM-Newton sources. The ACIS-I observations were arranged in a mosaic of …
We study the clustering properties of about 1200 z~4 Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) candidates with i'<26 which are selected by color from deep BRi' imaging data of a 618 arcmin^2 area in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field taken with Subaru Prime Focus Camera. The contamination and completeness of our LBG sample are evaluated, on the basis of the Hubble Deep Field North (HDFN) objects, to be 17% and 45%, respectively. We derive the angular correlation function over theta = 2''-1000'', and find that it is fitted fairly well by a power law, omega(theta)=A_omega theta^{-0.8}, with A_omega = 0.71 +/- 0.26…
We present the results of an ongoing weak lensing survey conducted with the Subaru telescope whose initial goal is to locate and study the distribution of shear-selected structures or halos. Using a Suprime-cam imaging survey spanning 21.82 square degree, we present a catalog of 100 candidate halos located from lensing convergence maps. Our sample is reliably drawn from that subset of our survey area, (totaling 16.72 square degree) uncontaminated by bright stars and edge effects and limited at a convergence signal to noise ratio of 3.69. To validate the sample detailed spectroscopic measures h…
We have studied the submillimetre (submm) properties of the following classes of near-infrared (NIR)-selected massive galaxies at high redshifts: BzK-selected star-forming galaxies (BzKs); distant red galaxies (DRGs); and extremely red objects (EROs). We used the SCUBA HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES), the largest uniform submm survey to date. Partial overlap of SIRIUS/NIR images and SHADES in SXDF has allowed us to identify 4 submm-bright NIR-selected galaxies, which are detected in the mid-infrared, 24 micron, and the radio, 1.4 GHz. We find that all of our submm-bright NIR-selected…
We have exploited the large area coverage of the combined UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) and Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) to search for bright Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z >= 5. Using the available optical+near-infrared photometry to efficiently exclude low-redshift contaminants, we identify nine z >= 5 LBG candidates brighter than z'=25(AB) within the 0.6 square degree overlap region between the UDS early data release (EDR) and the optical coverage of the SXDS. Accounting for selection incompleteness, we estimate the corresponding surface density of z >= 5 LBGs with z'<=25(AB) to …
We report the discovery of a giant Lya emitter (LAE) with a Spitzer/IRAC counterpart near the reionization epoch at z=6.595. The giant LAE is found from the extensive 1 deg^2 Subaru narrow-band survey for z=6.6 LAEs in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field, and subsequently identified by deep spectroscopy of Keck/DEIMOS and Magellan/IMACS. Among our 207 LAE candidates, this LAE is not only the brightest narrow-band object with L(Lya) = 3.9+/-0.2 x 10^43 erg/s in our survey volume of 10^6 Mpc^3, but also a spatially extended Lya nebula with the largest isophotal area whose major axis i…
We present the results of a survey for emission-line objects based on optical intermediate-band ($λ_{\rm c}$ = 5736 Å~ and $Δλ$ = 280 Å) and broad-band ($B$, $V$, $R$, and $i^\prime$) observations of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope with the Subaru Prime Focus Camera, Suprime-Cam. All the data were obtained during the guaranteed time observations of the Suprime-Cam instrument. The intermediate-band image covered a sky area with 10\minpoint62 $\times 12\minpoint40 \approx 132$ arcmin$^2$ in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (Ouchi et al.). Using this image, we have …
We present a new cluster-finding algorithm based on a combination of the Voronoi Tessellation and Friends-Of-Friends methods. The algorithm utilises probability distribution functions derived from a photometric redshift analysis and is tested on simulated cluster-catalogues. We use a 9 band photometric catalogue over 0.5 square degrees in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. The photometry is comprised of UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey infrared J and K data combined with 3.6 micro-m and 4.5 micro-m Spitzer bands and optical BVRi'z' imaging from the Subaru Telescope. The cluster catalogue contains 13 cl…
We investigate the clustering properties of 2,600 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=3.5-5.2 in two large blank fields, the Subaru Deep Field and the Subaru/XMM Deep Field (600arcmin^2 each). The angular correlation functions of these LBGs show a clear clustering at both z~4 and 5. The correlation lengths are r_0= 4.1^{+0.2}_{-0.2} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc (r_0= 5.1^{+1.0}_{-1.1} and 5.9^{+1.3}_{-1.7} h_{100}^{-1} Mpc) for all the detected LBGs (for L>L* LBGs) at z~4 and 5, respectively. These correlation lengths correspond to galaxy-dark matter biases of b_g= 2.9^{+0.1}_{-0.1} and…
(abridged) We investigate photometric properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=3.5-5.2 based on large samples of 2,600 LBGs detected in deep (i'~27) and wide-field (1,200 arcmin^2) images taken in the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and the Subaru/XMM Deep Field (SXDF). The selection criteria for the LBG samples are examined with 85 spectroscopically identified objects and by Monte Carlo simulations. We find in the luminosity functions of LBGs (i) that the number density of bright galaxies (M_{1700}<-22; corresponding to SFR_{corr}>100 Msolar yr^{-1}) decreases significantly from z=4 to 5 and (i…
We present a new cluster-finding algorithm based on a combination of the Voronoi Tessellation and Friends-Of-Friends methods. The algorithm utilises probability distribution functions derived from a photometric redshift analysis. We test our algorithm on a set of simulated cluster-catalogues and have published elsewhere its employment on UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey infrared J and K data combined with 3.6 micro-m and 4.5 micro-m Spitzer bands and optical BVRi'z' imaging from the Subaru Telescope. This pilot study has detected clusters over 0.5 square degrees in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. Th…
There are three major axes to describe the evolution of galaxies, namely, time (redshift), space (environment) and mass (stellar mass). In this article, one topic each will be presented along these axes. (1) Based on the Subaru wide-field (30') optical imaging of two distant clusters (z=0.55 and 0.83), we show the large scale structures in galaxy distributions on a scale greater than 10Mpc, which serve as an evidence for hierarchical growth of rich clusters of galaxies through assembly of surrounding groups. (2) Based on the deep NIR imaging of high-z clusters at z~1 and 1.5, we show massive g…
We study the 36 brightest radio sources in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field SXDF). Using MIPS 24 micron data from Spitzer we expect to trace accretion activity, even if it is hidden at optical wavelengths, unless the obscuring column is extreme. Our results suggest that in the decade or so below the break in the radio luminosity function that at least half, and potentially nearly all, radio sources are associated with accreting quasar-like objects. This is not true at lower radio luminosities where the quasar-like fraction approaches zero once compact sources are excluded.
[ABRIGED] We present the optical identification of a sample of 695 X-ray sources detected in the first 1.3 deg^2 of the XMM-COSMOS survey, down to a 0.5-2 keV (2-10 keV) limiting flux of ~10^-15 erg cm-2 s-1 (~5x10^-15 erg cm^-2 s-1). We were able to associate a candidate optical counterpart to ~90% (626) of the X-ray sources, while for the remaining ~10% of the sources we were not able to provide a unique optical association due to the faintness of the possible optical counterparts (I_AB>25) or to the presence of multiple optical sources within the XMM-Newton error circles. We also cross-corr…
We present results of our intermediate-band optical imaging survey for high-$z$ Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs) using the prime focus camera, Suprime-Cam, on the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. In our survey, we use eleven filters; four broad-band filters ($B$, $R_{\rm c}$, $i^\prime$, and $z^\prime$) and seven intermediate-band filters covering from 500 nm to 720 nm; we call this imaging program as the Mahoroba-11. The seven intermediate-band filters are selected from the IA filter series that is the Suprime-Cam intermediate-band filter system whose spectral resolution is $R = 23$. Our survey has been made in a…
We present the first cluster catalogue extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Early Data Release. The catalogue is created using UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey infrared J and K data combined with 3.6 micro-m and 4.5 micro-m Spitzer bands and optical BVRi'z' imaging from the Subaru Telescope over 0.5 square degrees in the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. We have created a new cluster-detection algorithm, based on the Friends-Of-Friends and Voronoi Tessellation methods, which utilises probability distribution functions derived from a photometric redshift analysis. We employ mock catalogues to …
We present the optical-to-submm spectral energy distributions for 33 radio & mid-IR identified submillimetre galaxies discovered via the SHADES 850 micron SCUBA imaging in the Subaru-XMM Deep Field (SXDF). Optical data for the sources comes from the Subaru-XMM Deep Field (SXDF) and mid- and far-IR fluxes from SWIRE. We obtain photometric redshift estimates for our sources using optical and IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 micron fluxes. We then fit spectral energy distribution (SED) templates to the longer wavelength data to determine the nature of the far-IR emission that dominates the bolometric luminosity …
We summarize the multiwavelength properties of X-ray sources detected in the 80 ks XMM-Newton observation of the Groth-Westphal Strip. We find 23 XMM-Newton sources within the WFPC2 fields. Ten spectroscopic redshifts are available from the DEEP and CFRS projects and 4 of these show broad Mg II emission (type 1 AGNs). Two of those without any broad lines, nevertheless, have [NeV] emission which is an unambiguous signature of AGN activity, one of which is a narrow-line Seyfert 1 and the other a type 2 AGN. We have made near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic observations using the Subaru OHS/CISCO sp…
- Aims: Gas cooling in the centre of massive galaxy clusters is believed to feed the most powerful active galactic nuclei in the Universe. How often clusters at high redshift show such cool cores has still to be explored by current and upcoming X-ray telescopes. - Methods: We correlated extended X-ray emissions from the second XMM-Newton source catalogue with SDSS data to particularly identify distant clusters. 2XMM J100451.6+411627 is a candidate luminous enough to obtain its redshift and temperature from the X-ray spectrum. We also determine the surface luminosity profile and estimate the te…
We construct a sample of extremely red objects (EROs) within the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey by combining the Early Data Release with optical data from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field. We find a total of 3715 objects over 2013 sq. arcmin with R-K>5.3 and K<=20.3, which is a higher surface density than found by previous studies. This is partly due to our ability to use a small aperture in which to measure colours, but is also the result of a genuine overdensity of objects compared to other fields. We separate our sample into passively-evolving and dusty star-forming galaxies using their RJK colou…
The SCUBA HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) is a major blank-field extragalactic sub-mm survey underway at the James Clerk Maxwell telescope.SHADES aims to cover half a square degree at 450+850microns to a 4sigma depth of ~8mJy at 850microns. Two fields are being observed, the Subaru/XMM--Newton Deep Field (SXDF) and the Lockman Hole East. The survey has 3 main aims to investigate: i) the cosmic history of massive dust enshrouded star-formation activity, ii) the clustering properties of sub-mm-selected galaxies in order to determine whether these objects could be progenitors of present…
We present the redshift distribution of the SHADES galaxy population based on the rest-frame radio-mm-FIR colours of 120 robustly detected 850um sources in the Lockman Hole East (LH) and Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF). The redshift distribution derived from the full SED information is shown to be narrower than that determined from the radio-submm spectral index, as more photometric bands contribute to a higher redshift accuracy. The redshift distribution of sources derived from at least two photometric bands peaks at z ~ 2.4 and has a near-Gaussian distribution, with 50 per cent (interqua…
We have obtained deep optical spectroscopic data of the highest-redshift cluster candidate (z ~ 1.4, CVB13) selected by Van Breukelen et al. (2006) in a photometric optical/infrared catalogue of the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Field. The data, which comprise 104 targeted galaxies, were taken with the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph (DEIMOS) on the Keck 2 telescope and yielded 31 secure redshifts in the range 1.25 < z < 1.54 within a 7' x 4' field centred on CVB13. Instead of one massive cluster at z = 1.4, we find evidence for three projected structures at z = 1.40, z = 1.45, and z = 1.48. T…
We present new results on the cosmological evolution of the near-infrared galaxy luminosity function, derived from the analysis of a new sample of \~22,000 K(AB) < 22.5 galaxies selected over an area of 0.6 square degrees from the Early Data Release of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). Our study has exploited the multi-wavelength coverage of the UDS field provided by the new UKIDSS WFCAM K and J-band imaging, the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey and the Spitzer-SWIRE Survey. The unique combination of large area and depth provided by this new survey minimises the complicating effect of cosmic va…
We present the maps, source catalogue and number counts of the largest, most complete and unbiased extragalactic submillimetre survey ever undertaken: the 850-micron SCUBA HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES). Using the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), SHADES mapped two separate regions of sky: the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field (SXDF) and the Lockman Hole East (LH). These SCUBA maps cover 720 square arcmin with an RMS noise level of about 2 mJy and have uncovered >100 submillimetre galaxies. In order to ensure the utmost robustn…
