Charged particle pseudorapidity distributions are presented from the PHOBOS experiment at RHIC, measured in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=19.6, 22.4, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV, as a function of collision centrality. The presentation includes the recently analyzed Cu+Cu data at 22.4 GeV. The measurements were made by the same detector setup over a broad range in pseudorapidity, |eta|<5.4, allowing for a reliable systematic study of particle production as a function of energy, centrality and system size. Comparing Cu+Cu and Au+Au results, we find that the total number of produced charged particles and the overall shape (height and width) of the pseudorapidity distributions are determined by the number of nucleon participants, N_part. Detailed comparisons reveal that the matching of the shape of the Cu+Cu and Au+Au pseudorapidity distributions over the full range of eta is better for the same N_part/2A value than for the same N_part value, where A denotes the mass number. In other words, it is the geometry of the nuclear overlap zone, rather than just the number of nucleon participants that drives the detailed shape of the pseudorapidity distribution and its centrality dependence.
The pseudorapidity asymmetry and centrality dependence of charged hadron spectra in d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are presented. The charged particle density at mid-rapidity, its pseudorapidity asymmetry and centrality dependence are reasonably reproduced by a Multi-Phase Transport model, by HIJING, and by the latest calculations in a saturation model. Ratios of transverse momentum spectra between backward and forward pseudorapidity are above unity for \pT below 5 GeV/$c$. The ratio of central to peripheral spectra in d+Au collisions shows enhancement at 2 $<$ \pT $<$ 6 GeV/$c$, w…
We report on measurements of directed flow as a function of pseudorapidity in Au+Au collisions at energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} =$ 19.6, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV as measured by the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These results are particularly valuable because of the extensive, continuous pseudorapidity coverage of the PHOBOS detector. There is no significant indication of structure near midrapidity and the data surprisingly exhibit extended longitudinal scaling similar to that seen for elliptic flow and charged particle pseudorapidity density.
This paper describes the measurement of the energy dependence of elliptic flow for charged particles in Au+Au collisions using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Data taken at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} =$ 19.6, 62.4, 130 and 200 GeV are shown over a wide range in pseudorapidity. These results, when plotted as a function of $η'=|η|-y_{beam}$, scale with approximate linearity throughout $η'$, implying no sharp changes in the dynamics of particle production as a function of pseudorapidity or increasing beam energy.
This paper presents measurements of the elliptic flow of charged particles as a function of pseudorapidity and centrality from Cu-Cu collisions at 62.4 and 200 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elliptic flow in Cu-Cu collisions is found to be significant even for the most central events. For comparison with the Au-Au results, it is found that the detailed way in which the collision geometry (eccentricity) is estimated is of critical importance when scaling out system-size effects. A new form of eccentricity, called the participant eccentricity, is…
Charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are presented for the d+Au reaction at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV with -4.2 <= eta <= 4.2$. The results, from the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC, are shown for minimum-bias events and 0-30%, 30-60%, and 60-80% centrality classes. Models incorporating both soft physics and hard, perturbative QCD-based scattering physics agree well with the experimental results. The data do not support predictions based on strong-coupling, semi-classical QCD. In the deuteron-fragmentation region the central 200 GeV data show behavior similar to full-overlap d+Au results at sqrt{s_{…
We present the centrality dependent measurement of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles and photons in Au + Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 GeV. The charged particles and photons are measured in the pseudorapidity region 2.9 < eta < 3.9 and 2.3 < eta < 3.7, respectively. We have studied the scaling of particle production with the number of participating nucleons and the number of binary collisions. The photon and charged particle production in the measured pseudorapidity range has been shown to be consistent with energy independent limiting fragmentation behavi…
We present STAR measurements of charged hadron production as a function of centrality in Au + Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV. The measurements cover a phase space region of 0.2 < p_T < 6.0 GeV/c in transverse momentum and -1 < eta < 1 in pseudorapidity. Inclusive transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons in the pseudorapidity region 0.5 < |eta| < 1 are reported and compared to our previously published results for |eta| < 0.5. No significant difference is seen for inclusive p_T distributions of charged hadrons in these two pseudorapidity bins. We measured dN/deta distributions…
A measurement is presented of the charged hadron multiplicity in hadronic PbPb collisions, as a function of pseudorapidity and centrality, at a collision energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair. The data sample is collected using the CMS detector and a minimum-bias trigger, with the CMS solenoid off. The number of charged hadrons is measured both by counting the number of reconstructed particle hits and by forming hit doublets of pairs of layers in the pixel detector. The two methods give consistent results. The charged hadron multiplicity density dN(ch)/d eta, evaluated at eta=0 for head-on colli…
PHOBOS measurements of elliptic flow are presented as a function of pseudorapidity, centrality, transverse momentum, energy and nuclear species. The elliptic flow in Cu-Cu is surprisingly large, particularly for the most central events. After scaling out the geometry through the use of an alternative form of eccentricity, called the participant eccentricity, which accounts for nucleon position fluctuations in the colliding nuclei, the relative magnitude of the elliptic flow in the Cu-Cu system is qualitatively similar to that measured in the Au-Au system.
The almost hermetic coverage of CMS is used to measure the distribution of transverse energy as a function of pseudo-rapidity for pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV. For minimum bias collisions $(1/N)~dE_T/dη$ reaches 23 GeV which implies an $E_T$ per participant pair comparable to that of peripheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV. The centrality dependence of transverse energy production has been studied using centrality measures defined in three different angular regions. There is a strong auto-correlation between $(1/N)~dE_T/dη$ and the $η$ range used to define cent…
This paper describes the measurement of collective flow for charged particles in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}} = 130 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). An azimuthal anisotropy is observed in the charged particle hit distribution in the PHOBOS multiplicity detector. This anisotropy is presented over a wide range of pseudorapidity (eta) for the first time at this energy. The size of the anisotropy (v_{2}) is thought to probe the degree of equilibration achieved in these collisions. The result here, averaged over momenta and particle species, is observed…
We present charged particle densities as a function of pseudorapidity and collision centrality for the 197Au+197Au reaction at Sqrt{s_NN}=200 GeV. For the 5% most central events we obtain dN_ch/deta(eta=0) = 625 +/- 55 and N_ch(-4.7<= eta <= 4.7) = 4630+-370, i.e. 14% and 21% increases, respectively, relative to Sqrt{s_NN}=130 GeV collisions. Charged-particle production per pair of participant nucleons is found to increase from peripheral to central collisions around mid-rapidity. These results constrain current models of particle production at the highest RHIC energy.
This paper describes the measurement of elliptic flow for charged particles in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The measured azimuthal anisotropy is presented over a wide range of pseudorapidity for three broad collision centrality classes for the first time at this energy. Two distinct methods of extracting the flow signal were used in order to reduce systematic uncertainties. The elliptic flow falls sharply with increasing eta at 200 GeV for all the centralities studied, as observed for minimum-bias collisions at s…
We present the first measurements of the pseudorapidity distribution of primary charged particles in Cu+Cu collisions as a function of collision centrality and energy, \sqrtsnn = 22.4, 62.4 and 200 GeV, over a wide range of pseudorapidity, using the PHOBOS detector. Making a global comparison of Cu+Cu and Au+Au results, we find that the total number of produced charged particles and the rough shape (height and width) of the pseudorapidity distributions are determined by the number of nucleon participants. More detailed studies reveal that a more precise matching of the shape of the Cu+Cu and A…
The centrality dependence of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ over a broad pseudorapidity range is presented. This Letter extends the previous results reported by ALICE to more peripheral collisions. No strong change of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density distributions with centrality is observed, and when normalised to the number of participating nucleons in the collisions, the evolution over pseudorapidity with centrality is likewise small. The broad pseudorapidity range allows precise estimates of the total nu…
The charged-particle pseudorapidity density for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=62.4 GeV has been measured over a wide range of impact parameters and compared to results obtained at other energies. As a function of collision energy, the pseudorapidity distribution grows systematically both in height and width. The mid-rapidity density is found to grow approximately logarithmically between AGS energies and the top RHIC energy. As a function of centrality, there is an approximate factorization of the centrality dependence of the mid-rapidity yields and the overall multiplicity scale. The new resu…
Pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles produced in heavy ion collisions are a powerful tool to characterize the global properties of the created system. They have been measured in a wide range of energies at the GSI, AGS, SPS and RHIC accelerators and will be one of the first measurements at ALICE at the LHC. The various analysis techniques developed by SPS and RHIC experiments are reviewed and the presently available results from SPS and RHIC are presented, focusing in particular on the scaling of charged particle yield with centrality and with center-of-mass energy. Finally the pe…
We present the first measurement of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of photons in the pseudorapidity region 2.3 < eta < 3.7 for different centralities in Au + Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 GeV. The pseudorapidity distribution of photons, dominated by neutral pion decays, has been compared to those of identified charged pions, photons, and inclusive charged particles from heavy ion and nucleon-nucleon collisions at various energies. Scaling of photon yield with number of participating nucleons and limiting fragmentation scenario for inclusive photon production has been studie…
The transverse energy ET in PbPb collisions at 2.76 TeV nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy sqrt(s[NN]) has been measured over a broad range of pseudorapidity eta and collision centrality using the CMS detector at the LHC. The transverse energy density per unit pseudorapidity d(ET)/d(eta) increases faster with collision energy than the charged particle multiplicity. This implies that the mean energy per particle is increasing with collision energy. At all pseudorapidities the transverse energy per participating nucleon increases with the centrality of the collision. The ratio of transverse e…
The study of flow can provide information on the initial state dynamics and the degree of equilibration attained in heavy ion collisions. This contribution presents results for both elliptic and directed flow as determined from data recorded by the PHOBOS experiment in Au+Au runs at RHIC at sqrt(sNN) = 19.6, 130 and 200 GeV. The PHOBOS detector provides a unique coverage in pseudorapidity for measuring flow at RHIC. The systematic dependence of flow on pseudorapidity, transverse momentum, centrality and energy is discussed.
The centrality dependence of charged-hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies is investigated in a nonequilibrium-statistical relativistic diffusion model (RDM) with three sources. Theoretical pseudorapidity distributions are compared with preliminary PbPb ALICE data at LHC energy of sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV for seven centralities, and a previous RDM prediction for this energy is confronted with the data. Refined predictions for 5.52 TeV PbPb based on RDM parameter extrapolations are presented.
We present the centrality dependence of the $N(Ω)/N(ϕ)$ ratios and $ϕ$ $v_{2}$ measured in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The results are compared to measurements of other identified particles and recombination model expectations in order to gain insight into the partonic collectivity and possible thermalization of the produced medium.
Elliptic flow is an interesting probe of the dynamical evolution of the dense system formed in the ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The elliptic flow dependences on transverse momentum, centrality, and pseudorapidity were measured using data collected by the PHOBOS detector, which offers a unique opportunity to study the azimuthal anisotropies of charged particles over a wide range of pseudorapidity. These measurements are presented, together with an overview of the analysis methods and a discussion of the results.
Preliminary results are presented for two analyses of transverse energy (ET) production measured with the electromagnetic calorimeters of the Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction Experiment (PHENIX), in nuclear interactions in Au+Au heavy-ion collisions created by the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Event-by-event ET distributions made across collision centrality were used in (1) measurements of 200 GeV mean ET, and (2) measurements of 200 GeV and 62.4 GeV ET distribution fluctuations. Event centrality was selected in 5% wide bins and each bin r…
Two particle correlation measurements in heavy ion collisions at RHIC have shown an extended near side correlation in $Δη$ relative to p+p for both, momentum triggered and untriggered analyses. This phenomenon is also known as the "ridge". An investigation into the momentum and centrality dependence of two particle correlations is presented for Cu+Cu 200 GeV collisions from the STAR experiment. We extract the amplitude, $Δη$ and $Δϕ$ widths from the near side correlation structure, and show how its parameters depend on centrality and the lower transverse momentum cut-off. Implications for the …
We present the centrality dependence of Lambda and Anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=62 GeV and 200 GeV measured with the STAR detector at RHIC. Within the precision of the measurement, we observe no centrality dependence of Lambda and Anti-Lambda hyperon global polarization and within our acceptance it is consistent with zero. Different sources of systematic uncertainties (feed down effects, spin precession) are discussed and estimated. The obtained upper limit, |P_{Lambda,Anti-Lambda}| < 0.02, is compared to theoretical predictions discussed recently i…
The centrality dependence of the mean charged-particle multiplicity as a function of pseudorapidity is measured in approximately 1 $μ$b$^{-1}$ of proton--lead collisions at a nucleon--nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}} = 5.02$ TeV using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Charged particles with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.7 are reconstructed using the ATLAS pixel detector. The $p$+Pb collision centrality is characterised by the total transverse energy measured in the Pb-going direction of the forward calorimeter. The charged-particle pseudorapidity dis…
In the PHOBOS experiment, charged particles are measured in almost the full solid angle. This enables the study of fluctuations and correlations in the particle production over a very wide kinematic range. In this paper, we show results of a direct search for fluctuations identified by an unusual shape of the pseudorapidity distribution. In addition, we use analysis of correlations of the multiplicity in similar pseudorapidity bins, placed symmetrically in the forward and backward hemispheres, to test the hypothesis of production of particles in clusters.
The energy and system size dependence of pseudorapidity ($η$) and multiplicity distributions of photons are measured in the region -2.3 $\leq$ $η$ $\leq$ -3.7 for Cu + Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV. Photon multiplicity measurements at forward rapidity have been carried out using a Photon Multiplicity Detector (PMD) in the STAR experiment. Photons are found to follow longitudinal scaling for Cu + Cu collisions for 0-10% centrality. A Comparison of pseudorapidity distributions with HIIJING model is also presented.
This paper presents $v_{4}/v_{2}^2$ ratio as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{t}$), pseudorapidity ($η$) and collision centrality in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). It is found that $v_{4}/v_{2}^2$ is larger than Hydrodynamic calculations, the centrality and transverse dependence of this ratio can not be fully described by Hydrodynamics, and the pseudorapidity dependence is opposite to what one expects from Hydrodynamics. The $p_{t}$ dependence of $v_{1}$ is also presented. It is found that $v_{1}(p_{t})…
The integrated elliptic flow of charged particles produced in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=2.76 TeV has been measured with the ATLAS detector using data collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The anisotropy parameter, v_2, was measured in the pseudorapidity range |eta| <= 2.5 with the event-plane method. In order to include tracks with very low transverse momentum pT, thus reducing the uncertainty in v_2 integrated over pT, a 1 mu b-1 data sample without a magnetic field in the tracking detectors is used. The centrality dependence of the integrated v_2 is compared to other measurements obta…
We present the charged-particle pseudorapidity density in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02\,\mathrm{Te\kern-.25exV}$ in centrality classes measured by ALICE. The measurement covers a wide pseudorapidity range from $-3.5$ to $5$, which is sufficient for reliable estimates of the total number of charged particles produced in the collisions. For the most central (0-5%) collisions we find $21\,400\pm 1\,300$ while for the most peripheral (80-90%) we find $230\pm 38$. This corresponds to an increase of $(27\pm4)\%$ over the results at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76\,\mathrm{Te\kern-.2…
Main characteristics of the charged particle dN_ch/deta and transverse energy dE_T/deta production measured in Heavy Ion collisions at RHIC energies are presented in this article. Transformation of the pseudo-rapidity shape, relation to the incident energy and centrality profile are described in a systematic way. Centrality profile is shown to be closely bound to the number of nucleons participating in the collisions, at the same time an alternative approach to study the centrality behavior is also discussed.
Di-hadron correlations have been used to study jets at RHIC and have yielded rich insight into the properties of the medium. Studies show that the near-side peak of high-pT triggered correlations can be decomposed into two parts, a jet-like correlation and the ridge. The jet-like correlation is narrow in both azimuth and pseudorapidity and has properties consistent with vacuum fragmentation, while the ridge is narrow in azimuth but broad in pseudorapidity and roughly independent of pseudorapidity. The energy, system, and particle composition of the jet-like correlation and the ridge are discus…
The BRAHMS experiment at RHIC has measured the production of charged hadrons as a function of pseudorapidity and transverse momentum in Au+Au, d+Au and p+p collisions at a common energy of sqrt(s_NN)=200GeV, and from these spectra we construct the nuclear modification factors for both ``hot'' and ``cold'' nuclear matter. In this contribution I will show how these factors evolve with pseudorapidity and collision centrality. We see a Cronin-like enhancement in d+Au collisions at midrapidity, going to a strong suppression at eta >= 2. In central Au+Au collisions we find a suppression both at mid-…
The centrality dependence of the midrapidity charged particle multiplicity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 19.6 and 200 GeV is presented. Within a simple model, the fraction of hard (scaling with number of binary collisions) to soft (scaling with number of participant pairs) interactions is consistent with a value of x = 0.13 +/- 0.01(stat) +/- 0.05(syst) at both energies. The experimental results at both energies, scaled by inelastic p(pbar)+p collision data, agree within systematic errors. The ratio of the data was found not to depend on centrality over the studied range and yields a sim…
We present measurements by STAR of the anisotropic flow coefficients $v_2$ and $v_4$ as a function of particle-type, centrality, transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in Au+Au collisions at RHIC.
$J/ψ$ production has been measured in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) during 2004 and 2005, respectively, at mid-rapidity ($|η| \le$ 0.35) via $J/ψ$ $\to$ $e^{+}e^{-}$ decay and at forward rapidity (1.2 $\le | η| \le$ 2.2) via $J/ψ$ $\to$ $μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{AA}$) of $J/ψ$ is presented as a function of the collision centrality for Au+Au collisions (final results) and Cu+Cu collisions (preliminary results) in both rapidity windows. These results are compared to SPS…
Elliptic flow has been measured by the BRAHMS experiment as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity for the Au+Au reaction at sqrt[s_{NN}] = 200 GeV. Identified-particle v2 (eta, pt) values were obtained with the two BRAHMS spectrometers at pseudorapidities eta approximately equal to 0, 1, and 3.4. The results show that the differential v2(eta, pt) values for a given particle type are essentially constant over the covered pseudorapidity range. It is suggested that the dominant cause of the observed fall-off of the integral v2 values going away from mid-rapidity is a corresponding …
Recently, Chatterjee et al used a hadronic transport model to estimate the resolution with which various experimental quantities select the impact parameter of relativistic heavy ion collisions at collision energies relevant to the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Measures based on particle multiplicity at forward rapidity were found to be significantly worse than those based on midrapidity multiplicity. Using the same model, we show that a slightly more sophisticated measure greatly improves the resolution based on forward rapidity particles; this …
The BRAHMS measurement of proton-to-pion ratios in Au+Au and p+p collisions at 62.4 and 200 GeV is presented as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality within the pseudorapidity range 0 < eta < 3.2. The p/pi ratio measured for Au+Au system at 62.4 GeV, eta = 3.2 reaches astounding value of 8-10 at pT >= 1.5 GeV/c. For these energy and pseudorapidity interval no centrality dependency of p/pi ratio is observed. The baryon-to-meson ratio of nucleus-nucleus data are consistent with results obtained for p+p interactions.
Identified pi^[+/-] K^[+/-], p and p-bar transverse momentum spectra at mid-rapidity in sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV Au-Au collisions were measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC as a function of collision centrality. Average transverse momenta increase with the number of participating nucleons in a similar way for all particle species. The multiplicity densities scale faster than the number of participating nucleons. Kaon and nucleon yields per participant increase faster than the pion yields. In central collisions at high transverse momenta (p_T greater than 2 GeV/c), anti-proton and proton yields a…
We present the first measurement of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of photons in the pseudorapidity region 2.3 $\le$ $η$ $\le$ 3.7 for different centralities in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 62.4 GeV. We find that the photon yield in this pseudorapidity range scales with the number of participating nucleons at all collision centralities studied. The pseudorapidity distribution of photons, dominated by neutral pion decays, has been compared to those of identified charged pions, photons, and inclusive charged particles from heavy ion and nucleon-nucleon collisions at var…
We present a systematic study of elliptic flow as a function of centrality, pseudorapidity, transverse momentum and energy for Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions from the PHOBOS experiment. New data on elliptic flow in Cu+Cu collisions at 22.4 GeV are shown. Elliptic flow scaled by participant eccentricity is found to be similar for both systems when collisions with the same number of participants or the same average area density are compared. This similarity is observed over a wide range in pseudorapidity and transverse momentum, indicating that participant eccentricity is the relevant quantity for g…
The almost hermetic coverage of the CMS detector is used to measure the distribution of transverse energy, $E_\mathrm{T}$, over 13.2 units of pseudorapidity, $η$, for pPb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} =$ 5.02 TeV. The huge angular acceptance exploits the fact that the CASTOR calorimeter at $-6.6$ $<$ $η$ $<$ $-5.2$ is effectively present on both sides of the colliding system because of a switch in the proton-going and lead-going beam directions. This wide acceptance enables the study of correlations between well-separated angular regions and ma…
We present the multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of photons produced in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at \sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 and 200 GeV. The photons are measured in the region -3.7 < η< -2.3 using the photon multiplicity detector in the STAR experiment at RHIC. The number of photons produced per average number of participating nucleon pairs increases with the beam energy and is independent of the collision centrality. For collisions with similar average numbers of participating nucleons the photon multiplicities are observed to be similar for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at a given beam…
Two-particle correlations and event-wise fluctuations in transverse momentum p_t are reported for Au-Au collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}} = 62 and 200 GeV on pseudorapidity (eta) and azimuth (phi). Distributions of all pairs of particles (no leading trigger particle) reveal jet-like correlations, or peaks at pair-wise opening angles of order 1 radian or less. The width of this same-side correlation peak increases dramatically on pseudorapidity and decreases on azimuth for increasing collision centrality. Evolution of the same-side peak with centrality suggests dissipation of low-Q^2 partons via stron…
We report on the observation of jet-like azimuthal and pseudorapidity correlations between the highest $p_T$ photon (leading photon) and charged hadrons produced in both p+p and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV.
We present the first wide-range measurement of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density distribution, for different centralities (the 0-5%, 5-10%, 10-20%, and 20-30% most central events) in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.76$ TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed using the full coverage of the ALICE detectors, $-5.0 < η< 5.5$, and employing a special analysis technique based on collisions arising from LHC "satellite" bunches. We present the pseudorapidity density as a function of the number of participating nucleons as well as an extrapolation to the total number of produc…
The PHOBOS apparatus includes a charged particle multiplicity detector covering almost all of 4pi in solid angle. The broad coverage in pseudorapidity, $η$, which is unique at RHIC, combined with the ability to collect a large sample of events with minimal bias, makes possible a study of correlations and fluctuations over most of the pseudorapidity range, even at the highest beam energy. Long range correlations, short range correlations at large |eta|, event-by-event fluctuations in the total number of charged particles, and event-by-event variation in the full shape of the pseudorapidity dist…
Multiplicity and pseudorapidity ($η$) density ($dN_{\rm ch}/dη$) distributions of charged hadrons provide key information towards understanding the particle production mechanisms and initial conditions of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. However, detector constraints limit the $η$-range across which charged particle measurements can be carried out. Extrapolating the measured distributions to large $η$-range by parameterizing measured distributions and by using calculations from event generators, we characterize the production of charged particles over the full kinematic range. In the present …
Centrality dependence of charged-particle pseudorapidity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{\textit{s}_{\rm NN}} = 5.36}$ TeV
ALICE首次在5.36 TeV Pb-Pb碰撞中测量中快度带电粒子赝快度密度,最中心5%碰撞的值为2010±53,结果验证了粒子产生模型并约束了初始能量密度。
We present the preliminary results from our analysis of event by event fluctuation in K/pi ratio in Au+Au collision at \sqrt s_{NN} = 200 GeV and at 62.4 GeV using STAR detector at RHIC. Two different methods have been used to extract the strength of dynamical fluctuation and the centrality dependence of that. The results from the study of energy and centrality dependence of the dynamical fluctuation are presented. From the excitation function it is seen that at two RHIC energies the measure of dynamical fluctuation is constant with values very close to that at 12.3 GeV at SPS. The dynamical f…
The charged-particle pseudorapidity density dNch/deta has been measured for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(sNN)=130 GeV at RHIC, using the PHOBOS apparatus. The total number of charged particles produced for the 3% most central Au+Au collisions for |eta|<=5.4 is found to be 4200+-470. The evolution of dNch/deta with centrality is discussed, and compared to model calculations and to data from proton-induced collisions. The data show an enhancement in charged-particle production at mid-rapidity, while in the fragmentation regions, the results are consistent with expectations from pp and pA scattering.
In this Letter, the ALICE Collaboration presents the first measurements of the charged-particle multiplicity density, $\rm{d}N_{\rm{ch}}/\rm{d}η$, and total charged-particle multiplicity, $N_{\rm{ch}}^{\rm{tot}}$, in Xe-Xe collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon--nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of collision centrality over a wide pseudorapidity range of $-3.5 < η< 5$. The values of $\rm{d}N_{\rm{ch}}/\rm{d}η$ at mid-rapidity and $N_{\rm{ch}}^{\rm{tot}}$ for central collisions, normalised to the number of nucleons participat…
We present the directed flow measurement ($v_1$) from Au+Au collisions at $\sqrtsNN = 62$ GeV. Over the pseudorapidity range we have studied, which covers $η$ from -1.2 to 1.2 and $2.4 < |η| < 4$, the magnitude of $v_1$ for charged particles is found to increase monotonously with pseudorapidity for all centralities. No ``$v_1$ wiggle'', as predicted by various theoretical models, is observed at midrapidity. Elliptic flow ($v_2$) from moderate high $p_t$ particles ($3-6 GeV/c$) at $\sqrtsNN = 200$ GeV is presented as a function of impact parameter. It is found that models that are based on {\it…
The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6, 130, 62.4 and 200 GeV as a function of centrality. The presented results are compared to measurements from other RHIC experiments, and experiments at lower energies. The $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ dependence of $dE_{T}/dη$ and $dN_{ch}/dη$ per pair of participants is consistent with logarithmic scaling for the most central events. The centrality dependence of $dE_{T}/dη$ and $dN_{ch}/dη$ is similar at all measured incident energies. At RHIC energi…
We present a measurement of the pseudorapidity density of primary charged particles near mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV as a function of the number of participating nucleons. These results are compared to models in an attempt to discriminate between competing scenarios of particle production in heavy ion collisions.
The collective effect of emission by the forward moving partons of high energy Cherenkov gluons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is considered. It can reveal itself as peaks in the pseudorapidity distribution of jets at midrapidities or as a ring-like structure of individual events in event-by-event analysis. The pseudorapidity distribution of centers of dense isolated groups of particles in HIJING model is determined. It can be considered as the background for Cherenkov gluons. If peaks above this background were found in experiment, they would indicate new collective ef…
