Using ultrafast optical techniques, we probe the hole-doping dependence of the electron-boson coupling constant $λ$ in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. In the overdoped region, we observe a correlation between ($λ$) and the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$. Upon performing the McMillan analysis, however, we find that $λ$ is too small to explain the high $T_{c}$'s, and that the Coulomb pseudopotential $μ^{\ast}$ is negative. Our analysis therefore reveals two components in the mechanism of high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity -- a dominant pre-existing pairing interaction, together with a weaker electron-phonon interaction that fine-tunes $T_{c}$.
A systematic temperature dependent study of the femtosecond optical superconducting (SC) state destruction and recovery in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ cuprate superconductor by means of the all-optical polarization-sensitive multi-pulse spectroscopy is presented. At low temperatures and a partial SC state suppression an anisotropic SC-gap recovery-timescale is suggested by the data. The SC state destruction and recovery dynamics are compared to the recent TR-ARPES-inferred SC-gap dynamics and a qualitative agreement is found. Using a phenomenological response function the experimental …
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the spectral function of the optimally doped high-T$_c$ superconductor (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ in the vicinity of the antinodal point in the superconducting state. Using a parameterized self-energy function, it was possible to describe both the coherent and the incoherent spectral weight of the bonding and the antibonding band. The renormalization effects can be assigned to a very strong coupling to the magnetic resonance mode and at higher energies to a bandwidth renormalization by a factor of two, probably caused b…
Because of the important role of electron-boson interactions in conventional superconductivity, it has long been asked whether any similar mechanism is at play in high-temperature cuprate superconductors. Evidence for strong electron-boson coupling is observed in cuprates with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), in the form of a dispersion kink and peak-dip-hump structure. What is missing is evidence of a causal relation to superconductivity. Here we revisit the problem using the technique of time-resolved ARPES on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. We focus on the peak-dip-hump str…
Using ultrafast optical techniques, we detect two types of bosons strongly coupled to electrons in the family of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ from the underdoped to overdoped regimes. The different doping dependences of the electron-boson coupling strengths enables us to identify them as phonons and spin fluctuations: electron-phonon coupling ($λ_{e-ph}$) peaks at optimal doping, and electron-spin fluctuation coupling ($λ_{e-sf}$) decreases monotonically with doping. This observation is consistent with two facts: (1) superconductivity is in close proximity with antiferromagnetism at low…
We report tunneling spectra of near optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions with area of 0.09 $μ$m$^2$, which avoid some fundamental difficulties in the previous tunneling experiments and allow a stable temperature-dependent measurement. A d-wave Eliashberg analysis shows that the spectrum at 4.2 K can be well fitted by considering electron couplings to a bosonic magnetic resonance mode and a broad high-energy continuum. Above $T_c$, the spectra show a clear pseudogap that persists up to 230 K, and a crossover can be seen indicating two different pseudogap p…
Using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$, we have made the first observation of a mass renormalization or "kink" in the E vs. $\vec k$ dispersion relation localized near $(π, 0)$. Compared to the kink observed along the nodal direction, this new effect is clearly stronger, appears at a lower energy near 40 meV, and is only present in the superconducting state. The kink energy scale defines a cutoff below which well-defined quasiparticle excitations occur. This effect is likely due to coupling to a bosonic excitation, with the most plausib…
There is an ongoing debate about the nature of the bosonic excitations responsible for the quasiparticle self energy in high temperature superconductors -- are they phonons or spin fluctuations? We present a careful analysis of the bosonic excitations as revealed by the `kink' feature at 70 meV in angle resolved photoemission data using Eliashberg theory for a d-wave superconductor. Starting from the assumption that nodal quasiparticles are not coupled to the $(π,π)$ magnetic resonance, the sharp structure at $70 $meV can be assigned to phonons. We find that not only can we account for the shi…
A pseudogap (PG) was introduced by Mott to describe a state of matter which has a minimum in the density of states at the Fermi level, deep enough for states to become localized. It can arise either from Coulomb repulsion between electrons, or due to an incipient charge or spin order, or a combination of the two. These states are rapidly fluctuating in time with random phase, so they are hard to observe experimentally. Here we present the first coherent quench measurements of the dynamical transition to the pseudogap state in the prototype high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_…
The possibility of driving phase transitions in low-density condensates through the loss of phase coherence alone has far-reaching implications for the study of quantum phases of matter. This has inspired the development of tools to control and explore the collective properties of condensate phases via phase fluctuations. Electrically-gated oxide interfaces, ultracold Fermi atoms, and cuprate superconductors, which are characterized by an intrinsically small phase-stiffness, are paradigmatic examples where these tools are having a dramatic impact. Here we use light pulses shorter than the inte…
We study the $τ_1$-impurity induced $\mathbf{q}$-space pattern of the energy derivative local density of states (LDOS) in a d-wave superconductor. We are motivated in part by the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation of strong gap inhomogeneity with weak charge density variation in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO). The hypothesis is that the gap inhomogeneity might be triggered by the disorder in pair potential. We focus on the effects of electron coupling to various bosonic modes, at the mode energy shifted by the d-wave superconducting gap. The pattern due to a highly…
Superconductivity originates from the coupling between charge carriers and bosonic excitations of either phononic or electronic origin. Identifying the most relevant pairing glue is a key step towards a clear understanding of the unconventional superconductivity. Here, by applying the ultrafast optical spectroscopy on the electron-doped cuprates La$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$, we discern a bosonic mode of electronic origin that has the strongest coupling with the charge carriers near $T_c$. We argue that this mode is associated with the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, a…
Electron-boson coupling plays a key role in superconductivity for many systems. However, in copper-based high-temperature ($T_c$) superconductors, its relation to superconductivity remains controversial despite strong spectroscopic fingerprints. Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to find a striking correlation between the superconducting gap and the bosonic coupling strength near the Brillouin zone boundary in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. The bosonic coupling strength rapidly increases from the overdoped Fermi-liquid regime to the optimally doped strange metal, concomitant…
The spectra of the second derivative of tunneling current d^{2}I/dV^{2} in the high-temperature superconductors YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} and Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ} show clear dip and peak features due to strong coupling to the bosonic modes mediating electron pairing. The energies of all the peaks in -d^{2}I/dV^{2}-like spectra match precisely with the energies of the peaks in the phonon density of states obtained by inelastic neutron scattering. The results clearly demonstrate that the bosonic modes mediating the electron pairing are phonons and that high-temperature superconductivity arises…

In the last two decades, non-equilibrium spectroscopies have evolved from avant-garde studies to crucial tools for expanding our understanding of the physics of strongly correlated materials. The possibility of obtaining simultaneously spectroscopic and temporal information has led to insights that are complementary to (and in several cases beyond) those attainable by studying the matter at equilibrium. Multiple phase transitions and new orders arising from competing interactions are benchmark examples where the interplay among electrons, lattice, and spin dynamics can be disentangled because …
The real part of the in-plane optical self-energy data in underdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) and ortho II YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$ contains new and important information on the pseudogap. Using a theoretical model approach we find that the density of state lost below the pseudogap $Δ_{pg}$ is accompanied with a pileup just above this energy. The pileup along with a sharp mode in the bosonic spectral function leads to an unusually rapid increase in the optical scattering rate and a characteristically sloped peak in the real part of the optical self-energy. These features…
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements have observed modulations in the density of states (DOS) of a number of high-T$_c$ cuprates. These modulations have been interpreted in terms of electron-boson coupling analogous to the dispersion "kinks" observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). However, a direct a reconciliation of the energy scales and features observed by the two probes is presently lacking. In this paper we examine the general features of el-boson coupling in a $d-$wave superconductor using Eliashberg theory, focusing on the structure of the modulations…
In strongly correlated materials the electronic and optical properties are significantly affected by the coupling of fermionic quasiparticles to different degrees of freedom, such as lattice vibrations and bosonic excitations of electronic origin. Broadband ultrafast spectroscopy is emerging as the premier technique to unravel the subtle interplay between quasiparticles and electronic or phononic collective excitations, by their different characteristic timescales and spectral responses. By investigating the femtosecond dynamics of the optical properties of Y-Bi2212 crystals over the 0.5-2 eV …
