In our recent work, we reported an exhaustive study on the simulated bit error rate (BER) performance of a low-complexity likelihood ascent search (LAS) algorithm for detection in large multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with large number of antennas that achieve high spectral efficiencies. Though the algorithm was shown to achieve increasingly closer to near maximum-likelihood (ML) performance through simulations, no BER analysis was reported. Here, we extend our work on LAS and report an asymptotic BER analysis of the LAS algorithm in the large system limit, where $N_t,N_r \to \infty$ with $N_t=N_r$, where $N_t$ and $N_r$ are the number of transmit and receive antennas. We prove that the error performance of the LAS detector in V-BLAST with 4-QAM in i.i.d. Rayleigh fading converges to that of the ML detector as $N_t,N_r \to \infty$.
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a transmission technique for cellular systems that uses many antennas to support not-as-many users. Thus far, the performance of massive MIMO has only been examined in finite cellular networks. In this letter, we analyze its performance in random cellular networks with Poisson distributed base station locations. Specifically, we provide analytical expressions for the asymptotic coverage probability and rate in both downlink and uplink when each base station has a large number of antennas. The results show that, though limited by pilot contaminat…
In this paper, we consider the transceiver and relay design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular two-way relay channel (cTWRC), where a multi-antenna base station (BS) exchanges information with multiple multi-antenna mobile stations via a multi-antenna relay station (RS). We propose a novel two-way relaying scheme to approach the sum capacity of the MIMO cTWRC.
This paper investigates the performance of a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that uses a large transmit antenna array with antenna elements spaced densely. Under the assumption of idealized uniform linear antenna arrays without mutual coupling, precoded quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) transmission is proved to achieve the channel capacity of the massive MIMO system when the transmit antenna separation tends to zero. This asymptotic optimality is analogous to that of QPSK faster-than-Nyquist signaling.
We analyze an uplink of a fast flat fading MIMO-CDMA channel in the case where the data symbol vector for each user follows an arbitrary distribution. The spectral efficiency of the channel with CSI at the receiver is evaluated analytically with the replica method. The main result is that the hierarchical decoupling principle holds in the MIMO-CDMA channel, i.e., the MIMO-CDMA channel is decoupled into a bank of single-user MIMO channels in the many-user limit, and each single-user MIMO channel is further decoupled into a bank of scalar Gaussian channels in the many-antenna limit for a fading …
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology facilitates huge increases in the capacity of wireless channels, while non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) addresses the problem of limited resources in traditional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques, promising enhanced spectral efficiency. This work uses asymptotic capacity computation results to reduce the complexity of a power allocation algorithm for small-scale MIMO-NOMA, so that it may be applied for systems with massive MIMO arrays. The proposed method maximizes the sum-capacity of the considered system, subject to powe…
In this paper, we derive an asymptotic closed--form expression for the error bound on extrapolation of doubly selective mobile MIMO wireless channels. The bound shows the relationship between the prediction error and system design parameters such as bandwidth, number of antenna elements, and number of frequency and temporal pilots, thereby providing useful insights into the effects of these parameters on prediction performance. Numerical simulations show that the asymptotic bound provides a good approximation to previously derived bounds while eliminating the need for repeated computation and …
The outage performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique has received intense attention in order to ensure the reliability requirement for mission-critical machine-type communication (cMTC) applications. In this paper, the outage probability is asymptotically studied for MIMO channels to thoroughly investigate the transmission reliability. To fully capture the spatial correlation effects, the MIMO fading channel matrix is modelled according to three types of Kronecker correlation structure, i.e., independent, semi-correlated and full-correlated Rayleigh MIMO channels. The outa…
The theoretical analysis of downlink massive MIMO usually assumes the ideal Gaussian channel matrix with asymp- totic orthogonality of channel vectors associated with different users, since it can provide the favorable propagation condition. Meanwhile, recent experiments have shown that massive MIMO channels between a certain user and massive base station antennas appear the spatial common sparsity (SCS) in both the time domain and angle domain. This motivates us to investigate whether realistic sparse massive MIMO channels could provide the favorable propagation condition, and reveal the capa…
This letter derives the asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) and outage probability of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) maximum ratio combining (MRC) systems. We consider Rayleigh fading channels with both transmit and receive spatial correlation. Our results are based on new asymptotic expressions which we derive for the p.d.f. and c.d.f. of the maximum eigenvalue of positive-definite quadratic forms in complex Gaussian matrices. We prove that spatial correlation does not affect the diversity order, but that it reduces the array gain and hence increases the SER in the high SNR regime.
This paper explores the benefit of using some of the machine learning techniques and Big data optimization tools in approximating maximum likelihood (ML) detection of Large Scale MIMO systems. First, large scale MIMO detection problem is formulated as a LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) optimization problem. Then, Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is considered in solving this problem. The choice of ADMM is motivated by its ability of solving convex optimization problems by breaking them into smaller sub-problems, each of which are then easier to handle. …
We propose in this work to employ the Box-LASSO, a variation of the popular LASSO method, as a low-complexity decoder in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system. The Box-LASSO is mainly useful for detecting simultaneously structured signals such as signals that are known to be sparse and bounded. One modulation technique that generates essentially sparse and bounded constellation points is the so-called generalized space-shift keying (GSSK) modulation. In this direction, we derive high dimensional sharp characterizations of various performance measures of …
This work considers the downlink of a multicell massive MIMO system in which $L$ base stations (BSs) of $N$ antennas each communicate with $K$ single-antenna user equipments randomly positioned in the coverage area. Within this setting, we are interested in evaluating the sum rate of the system when MRT and RZF are employed under the assumption that each intracell link forms a MIMO Rician fading channel. The analysis is conducted assuming that $N$ and $K$ grow large with a non-trivial ratio $N/K$ under the assumption that the data transmission in each cell is affected by channel estimation err…
We analyze a MIMO DS-CDMA channel with a general multiuser detector including a nonlinear multiuser detector, using the replica method. In the many-user, limit the MIMO DS-CDMA channel with the multiuser detector is decoupled into a bank of single-user SIMO Gaussian channels if a spatial spreading scheme is employed. On the other hand, it is decoupled into a bank of single-user MIMO Gaussian channels if a spatial spreading scheme is not employed. The spectral efficiency of the MIMO DS-CDMA channel with the spatial spreading scheme is comparable with that of the MIMO DS-CDMA channel using an op…
This letter introduces an analytical model that gives the asymptotic cumulative number of molecules absorbed by spherical receivers in a diffusive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) molecular communication (MC) system with pointwise transmitters. In the proposed model, the reciprocal effect among the fully absorbing (FA) receivers is described by using the concept of fictitious pointwise negative source of molecules, the best position of which for each spherical receiver being defined by its absorption barycenter. We show that there is an agreement between the proposed asymptotic model and …
This paper considers a deterministic physical model of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with uniform linear antenna arrays. It is known that the maximum spatial degrees of freedom is achieved by spacing antenna elements at half the carrier wavelength. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of spacing antennas more densely than the critical separation. The achievable rates of MIMO systems are evaluated in the large-system limit, where the lengths of transmit and receive antenna arrays tend to infinity with the antenna separations kept constant. The main res…
This paper considers the setup of a parallel MIMO relay network in which $K$ relays, each equipped with $N$ antennas, assist the transmitter and the receiver, each equipped with $M$ antennas, in the half-duplex mode, under the assumption that $N\geq{M}$. This setup has been studied in the literature like in \cite{nabar}, \cite{nabar2}, and \cite{qr}. In this paper, a simple scheme, the so-called Incremental Cooperative Beamforming, is introduced and shown to achieve the capacity of the network in the asymptotic case of $K\to{\infty}$ with a gap no more than $O(\frac{1}{\log(K)})$. This result …
In this work, we focus on the ergodic sum rate in the downlink of a single-cell large-scale multi-user MIMO system in which the base station employs N antennas to communicate with $K$ single-antenna user equipments. A regularized zero-forcing (RZF) scheme is used for precoding under the assumption that each link forms a spatially correlated MIMO Rician fading channel. The analysis is conducted assuming $N$ and $K$ grow large with a non trivial ratio and perfect channel state information is available at the base station. Recent results from random matrix theory and large system analysis are use…
The asymptotic mutual information (MI) analysis for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems over double-scattering channels has achieved engaging results, but the convergence rates of the mean, variance, and the distribution of the MI are not yet available in the literature. In this paper, by utilizing the large random matrix theory (RMT), we give a central limit theory (CLT) for the MI and derive the closed-form approximation for the mean and the variance by a new approach -- Gaussian tools. The convergence rates of the mean, variance, and the characteristic function are proved to be O(…
The uplink achievable rate of massive multiple- input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are assumed to equip at the base station (BS), is investigated in this paper. We assume that only imperfect channel station information is known at the BS. Then a new MMSE receiver is designed by taking not only the Gaussian noise, but also the channel estimation error and quantizer noise into account. By using the Stieltjes transform of random matrix, we further derive a tight asymptotic equivalent for the uplink achievable rate with proposed MMSE …
Precise characterization of the mutual information of MIMO systems is required to assess the throughput of wireless communication channels in the presence of Rician fading and spatial correlation. Here, we present an asymptotic approach allowing to approximate the distribution of the mutual information as a Gaussian distribution in order to provide both the average achievable rate and the outage probability. More precisely, the mean and variance of the mutual information of the separatelycorrelated Rician fading MIMO channel are derived when the number of transmit and receive antennas grows as…
Hardware impairments in radio-frequency components of a wireless system cause unavoidable distortions to transmission that are not captured by the conventional linear channel model. In this paper, a 'binoisy' single-user multiple-input multiple-output (SU-MIMO) relation is considered where the additional distortions are modeled via an additive noise term at the transmit side. Through this extended SU-MIMO channel model, the effects of transceiver hardware impairments on the achievable rate of multi-antenna point-to-point systems are studied. Channel input distributions encompassing practical d…
In this paper, an outage limited MIMO channel is considered. We build on Zheng and Tse's elegant formulation of the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff to develop a better understanding of the asymptotic relationship between the probability of error, transmission rate, and signal-to-noise ratio. In particular, we identify the limitation imposed by the multiplexing gain notion and develop a new formulation for the throughput-reliability tradeoff that avoids this limitation. The new characterization is then used to elucidate the asymptotic trends exhibited by the outage probability curves of MIMO ch…
This letter presents a comprehensive framework analyzing the asymptotic error performance of a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system employing spatial modulation (SM) with maximum likelihood detection and perfect channel state information. Generic analytical expressions for the diversity and coding gains are deduced that reveal fundamental properties of MIMO SM systems. The presented analysis can be used to obtain closed-form upper bounds for the average bit error probability (ABEP) of MIMO SM systems under generalized fading which become asymptotically tight in the high signal…
Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) provides great improvements in spectral efficiency over legacy cellular networks, by coherent combining of the signals over a large antenna array and by spatial multiplexing of many users. Since its inception, the coherent interference caused by pilot contamination has been believed to be an impairment that does not vanish, even with an unlimited number of antennas. In this work, we show that this belief is incorrect and an artifact from using simplistic channel models and suboptimal signal processing schemes. We focus on the uplink and prove that …
Multimode fibers (MMFs) offer a cost-effective connection solution for small and medium length networks. However, data rates through multimode fibers are traditionally limited by modal dispersion. Signal processing and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) have been shown to be effective at combating these limitations, but device design for the specific purpose of MIMO in MMFs is still an open issue. This paper utilizes a statistical field propagation model for MMFs to aid the analysis and designs of MMF laser and detector arrays, and aims to improve data rates of the fiber. Simulations reveal…
Future cellular systems based on the use of millimeter waves will heavily rely on the use of antenna arrays both at the transmitter and at the receiver. For complexity reasons and energy consumption issues, fully digital precoding and postcoding structures may turn out to be unfeasible, and thus suboptimal structures, making use of simplified hardware and a limited number of RF chains, have been investigated. This paper considers and makes a comparative assessment, both from a spectral efficiency and energy efficiency point of view, of several suboptimal precoding and postcoding beamforming st…
The present paper studies the asymptotic performance of multi-hop amplify-and-forward relay multiple-antenna communication channels. Each multi-antenna terminal in the network amplifies the received signal, sent by a source, and retransmits it upstream towards a destination. Achievable ergodic rates under both jointly optimal detection and decoding and practical separate decoding schemes for arbitrary signaling schemes, along with the average bit error rate for various receiver structures are derived in the regime where the number of antennas at each terminal grows large without a bound. To ov…
In this contribution, an algorithm for evaluating the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for frequency selective Rayleigh MIMO channels is proposed. In contrast with the flat fading Rayleigh cases, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. Classically, both the eigenvectors and eigenvalues are computed numerically and the corresponding optimization algorithms remain computationally very demanding. In this paper, it is proposed to optimize (w.r.t. the input covariance matrix) a large system approximation of the average mutual…
We investigate the MIMO broadcast channel in the high SNR regime when linear filtering is applied instead of dirty paper coding. Using a user-wise rate duality where the streams of every single user are not treated as self-interference as in the hitherto existing stream-wise rate dualities for linear filtering, we solve the weighted sum rate maximization problem of the broadcast channel in the dual multiple access channel. Thus, we can exactly quantify the asymptotic rate loss of linear filtering compared to dirty paper coding for any channel realization. Having converted the optimum covarianc…
In this paper, the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) optical wireless communication (OWC) link based on vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays is systematically carried out with the aim to support data rates in excess of 1 Tb/s for the backhaul of sixth generation (6G) indoor wireless networks. The proposed design combines direct current optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) and a spatial multiplexing MIMO architecture. For such an ultra-high-speed line-of-sight (LOS) OWC link with low divergence laser beams, maintaining alignment is of hi…
This paper investigates the symbol error probability~(SEP) of point-to-point massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems using equally likely PAM, PSK, and square QAM signallings in the presence of transmitter correlation. The receiver has perfect knowledge of the channel coefficients, while the transmitter only knows first- and second-order channel statistics. With a zero-forcing~(ZF) detector implemented at the receiver side, we design and derive closed-form expressions of the optimal precoders at the transmitter that minimizes the average SEP over channel statistics for various mo…
Linear receivers are an attractive low-complexity alternative to optimal processing for multi-antenna MIMO communications. In this paper we characterize the information-theoretic performance of MIMO linear receivers in two different asymptotic regimes. For fixed number of antennas, we investigate the limit of error probability in the high-SNR regime in terms of the Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff (DMT). Following this, we characterize the error probability for fixed SNR in the regime of large (but finite) number of antennas. As far as the DMT is concerned, we report a negative result: we show …
Diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) presents a compact framework to compare various MIMO systems and channels in terms of the two main advantages they provide (i.e. high data rate and/or low error rate). This tradeoff was characterized asymptotically (SNR-> infinity) for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel by Zheng and Tse [1]. The asymptotic DMT overestimates the finite-SNR one [2]. In this paper, using the recent results on the asymptotic (in the number of antennas) outage capacity distribution, we derive and analyze the finite-SNR DMT for a broad class of channels (not necessarily Rayleigh fad…
The use of multiple antenna arrays in transmission and reception has become an integral part of modern wireless communications. To quantify the performance of such systems, the evaluation of bounds on the error probability of realistic finite length codewords is important. In this paper, we analyze the standard Gallager error bound for both constraints of maximum average power and maximum instantaneous power. Applying techniques from random matrix theory, we obtain analytic expressions of the error exponent when the length of the codeword increases to infinity at a fixed ratio with the antenna…
Massive Multiple-input Multiple-output (MIMO) systems offer exciting opportunities due to their high spectral efficiencies capabilities. On the other hand, one major issue in these scenarios is the high-complexity detectors of such systems. In this work, we present a low-complexity, near maximum-likelihood (ML) performance achieving detector for the uplink in large MIMO systems with tens to hundreds of antennas at the base station (BS) and similar number of uplink users. The proposed algorithm is derived from the likelihood-ascent search (LAS) algorithm and it is shown to achieve near ML perfo…
In this paper it is shown that the nonfeedback capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) additive Gaussian noise (AGN) channels, when the noise is nonstationary and unstable, is characterized by an asymptotic optimization problem that involves, a generalized matrix algebraic Riccati equation (ARE) of filtering theory, and a matrix Lyapunov equation of stability theory of Gaussian systems. Furthermore, conditions are identified such that, the characterization of nonfeedback capacity corresponds to the uniform asymptotic per unit time limit, over all initial distributions, of the charact…
MIMO-NOMA combines Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), which can address heterogeneous challenges, such as massive connectivity, low latency, and high reliability. In this paper, a practical coded MIMO-NOMA system with capacityapproaching performance as well as low implementation complexity is proposed. Specifically, the employed receiver consists of a multi-user Linear Minimum Mean-Square Error (LMMSE) detector and a bank of single-user message-passing decoders, which decompose the overall signal recovery into distributed low-complexity calculation…
The exact average complexity analysis of the basic sphere decoder for general space-time codes applied to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channel is known to be difficult. In this work, we shed the light on the computational complexity of sphere decoding for the quasi-static, LAttice Space-Time (LAST) coded MIMO channel. Specifically, we drive an upper bound of the tail distribution of the decoder's computational complexity. We show that, when the computational complexity exceeds a certain limit, this upper bound becomes dominated by the outage probability achieved by LAST codin…
In this paper, we investigate the design of linear precoders for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC). We assume that statistical channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitters and consider the problem under the practical finite alphabet input assumption. First, we derive an asymptotic (in the large system limit) expression for the weighted sum rate (WSR) of the MIMO MAC with finite alphabet inputs and Weichselberger's MIMO channel model. Subsequently, we obtain the optimal structures of the linear precoders of the users maximizing the asymp…
We consider a downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple output (MIMO) system employing regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. We derive the asymptotic signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) as both the number of antennas and the number of users go to infinity at a fixed ratio. Focusing on the symmetric uncorrelated channels, we show that the SLNR is asymptotically equal to signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) which allows us to optimize the user loading for spectral efficiency. The results show that the optimal user loading varies depending on the channel signal-to-noise ratio…
This work focuses on the downlink and uplink of large-scale single-cell MU-MIMO systems in which the base station (BS) endowed with $M$ antennas communicates with $K$ single-antenna user equipments (UEs). Particularly, we aim at reducing the complexity of the linear precoder and receiver that maximize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio subject to a given power constraint. To this end, we consider the asymptotic regime in which $M$ and $K$ grow large with a given ratio. Tools from random matrix theory (RMT) are then used to compute, in closed form, accurate approximations for t…
We investigate asymptotic capacity limits of the Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) with spatially correlated fading to understand when and how much transmit correlation helps the capacity. By imposing a structure on channel covariances (equivalently, transmit correlations at the transmitter side) of users, also referred to as \emph{transmit correlation diversity}, the impact of transmit correlation on the power gain of MIMO BCs is characterized in several regimes of system parameters, with a particular interest in the large-scale array (or massive MIMO) regime. Taking the cost for downlink …

This paper considers the uplink of a distributed Massive MIMO network where $N$ base stations (BSs), each equipped with $M$ antennas, receive data from $K=2$ users. We study the asymptotic spectral efficiency (as $M\to \infty$) with spatial correlated channels, pilot contamination, and different degrees of channel state information (CSI) and statistical knowledge at the BSs. By considering a two-user setup, we can simply derive fundamental asymptotic behaviors and provide novel insights into the structure of the optimal combining schemes. In line with [1], when global CSI is available at all B…
Diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) was characterized asymptotically (SNR-> infinity) for i.i.d. Rayleigh fading channel by Zheng and Tse [1]. The SNR-asymptotic DMT overestimates the finite-SNR one [2]. This paper outlines a number of additional limitations and difficulties of the DMT framework and discusses their implications. Using the recent results on the size-asymptotic (in the number of antennas) outage capacity distribution, the finite-SNR, size-asymptotic DMT is derived for a broad class of fading distributions. The SNR range over which the finite-SNR DMT is accurately approximated …
A multi-hop relaying system is analyzed where data sent by a multi-antenna source is relayed by successive multi-antenna relays until it reaches a multi-antenna destination. Assuming correlated fading at each hop, each relay receives a faded version of the signal from the previous level, performs linear precoding and retransmits it to the next level. Using free probability theory and assuming that the noise power at relaying levels-- but not at destination-- is negligible, the closed-form expression of the asymptotic instantaneous end-to-end mutual information is derived as the number of anten…
The outage performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique has received intensive attention to meet the stringent requirement of reliable communications for 5G applications, e.g., mission-critical machine-type communication (cMTC). To account for spatial correlation effects at both transmit and receive sides, the full-correlated Rayleigh MIMO fading channels are modeled according to Kronecker correlation structure in this paper. The outage probability is expressed as a weighted sum of the generalized Fox's H functions. The simple analytical result empowers asymptotic outage anal…
Favorable propagation (FP) and channel hardening (CH) are desired properties in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To date, these properties have primarily been analyzed for classical \textit{statistical} channel models, or \textit{ray-based} models with very specific angular parameters and distributions. This paper presents a thorough mathematical analysis of the asymptotic system behavior for ray-based channels with \textit{arbitrary} ray distributions, and considers \textit{two} types of antenna array structures at the cellular base station: a uniform linear array (ULA) …
This work focuses on target detection in a colocated MIMO radar system. Instead of exploiting the classical temporal domain, we propose to explore the spatial dimension (i.e., number of antennas $M$) to derive asymptotic results for the detector. Specifically, we assume no a priori knowledge of the statistics of the autoregressive data generating process and propose to use a mispecified Wald-type detector, which is shown to have an asymptotic $χ$-squared distribution as $M\to\infty$. Closed-form expressions for the probabilities of false alarm and detection are derived. Numerical results are u…
The capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for coherent block-fading correlated MIMO Rician channels are determined. In this case, no closed-form expressions for the eigenvectors of the optimum input covariance matrix are available. New results related to the accuracy of the corresponding large system approximation are provided. An attractive optimization algorithm of this approximation is proposed and we establish…
We analyze the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) links with one-bit output quantization in terms of achievable rates and characterize their performance loss compared to unquantized systems for general channel statistical models and general channel state information (CSI) at the receiver. One-bit ADCs are particularly suitable for large-scale millimeter wave MIMO Communications (massive MIMO) to reduce the hardware complexity. In such applications, the signal-to-noise ratio per antenna is rather low due to the propagation loss. Thus, it is crucial to analyze the performance o…
Low-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has shown great potential in facilitating cost- and power-efficient implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We investigate the performance of a massive MIMO downlink network with low-resolution DACs using regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. It serves multiple receivers equipped with finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). By taking the quantization errors at both the transmitter and receivers into account under spatially correlated channels, the regularization parameter for RZF is optimized w…
