Disordered vortex arrays in a two-dimensional condensate

We suggest a method to create turbulence in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The method consists in, firstly, creating an ordered vortex array, and, secondly, imprinting a phase difference in different regions of the condensate. By solving numerically the two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we show that the motion of the resulting positive and negative vortices is disordered.

No quasi-long-range order in strongly disordered vortex glasses: a rigorous proof

The paper contains a rigorous proof of the absence of quasi-long-range order in the random-field O(N) model for strong disorder in the space of an arbitrary dimensionality. This result implies that quasi-long-range order inherent to the Bragg glass phase of the vortex system in disordered superconductors is absent as the disorder or external magnetic field is strong.

Bose-Einstein condensates in disordered potentials

The interplay between disorder and interactions is a "leit-motiv" of condensed matter physics, since it constitutes the driving mechanism of the metal-insulator transition. Bose-Einstein condensates in optical potentials are proving to be powerful tools to quantum simulate disordered systems. We will review the main experimental and theoretical results achieved in the last few years in this rapidly developing field.

Amorphous Vortex Glass Phase in Strongly Disordered Superconductors

We introduce a model describing vortices in strongly disordered three-dimensional superconductors. The model focuses on the topological defects, i.e., dislocation lines, in an elastic description of the vortex lattice. The model is studied using Monte Carlo simulations, revealing a glass phase at low temperatures, separated by a continuous phase transition to the high temperature resistive vortex liquid phase. The critical exponents nu ~ 1.3 and eta ~ -0.4 characterizing the transition are obtained from finite size scaling.

Dynamic transition in vortex flow in strongly disordered Josephson junction arrays and superconducting thin films

We study the dynamics of vortices in strongly disordered $d=2$ Josephson junction arrays and superconducting films driven by a current. We find a dynamic phase transition in vortex flow at a current $I_p>I_c$. Below $I_p$ there is plastic flow characterized by an average-velocity correlation length scale $ξ_v$ in the direction of motion, which diverges when approaching $I_p$. Above $I_p$ we find a moving vortex phase with homogeneous flow and short range smectic order. A finite size analysis shows that this phase becomes asymptotically a liquid for large length scales.

Bogoliubov Theory of Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensates

We describe interacting bosons at low temperature in spatially correlated random potentials. By a Bogoliubov expansion around the deformed mean-field condensate, the fundamental Hamiltonian for elementary excitations is derived, achieving an analytical formulation in the case of weak disorder. From this, we calculate the sound velocity and true zero-temperature condensate depletion in correlated disorder and all dimensions.

Variational approach for Bose-Einstein condensates in strongly disordered traps

Recently, Nattermann and Pokrovsky [PRL 100, 060402 (2008)] have proposed a scaling approach for studying Bose-Einstein condensates in strongly disordered traps. In this paper we implement their scaling argument in the framework of the variational method for solving the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We consider atomic gases with both short range s-wave interaction and long range anisotropic dipolar interaction.
